By Jane Harrison The Georgia General Assembly may consider a funding request to put a marine rescue station on Lake Lanier. Renee Unterman, vice-chairperson of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told attendees at a Lanier Legislative Caucus meeting last month that she would recommend funding for a fire and rescue facility on the south end of the lake. “I think this is a priority,” she told the approximately 20 attendees, most of whom were members of the Lake Lanier Association. She said a rescue station is needed on the lake that hosts 7.5 million visitors annually, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates. She noted that a lakeside unit with personnel and equipment for fire-fighting and medical emergencies could likely provide the quickest and most appropriate response in potential lake disasters, such as a fire at an inland marina where hundreds of boats line up in close proximity. Discussion pointed to a possible location on Lanier Islands Parkway at the public dock near the Lanier Islands Resort gate. Unterman said she did not know how much money she would request. Legislators convene early next year.

Unterman, of Buford, chairs the caucus of legislators from the five counties touching the lake. Senator Butch Miller and Rep. Matt Dubnik, both of Gainesville, and Rep. David Clark, of Buford, were the only other caucus members at the meeting. Aside from a few representatives from political offices, law enforcement, a real estate agency, and Gainesville marina, the remainder of the audience consisted of LLA members. Emails about the meeting went out to caucus members less than a week before the Oct. 16 meeting. There was no public announcement. A bill that could require boat purchasers to get a state title for boats has moved out of the Senate rules committee and into the finance committee, Miller reported. When first announced two years ago, the measure drew the ire of numerous boat owners who called legislators complaining about another regulation infringing on their freedom on the water. Unterman indicated the uproar has simmered down, based on dwindling calls from boaters. Boat titling could purportedly help law enforcement trace and identify stolen boats and provide counties with additional docu-

mentation of boat sales for tax purposes. Miller indicated the lack of boat titles in Georgia has made it a hot state for boat thefts. “There are more boats stolen per capita in Georgia than in any state in the nation,” he said. If made law, the measure would require new purchasers of boats with 25 horsepower or more to get an official Georgia document signifying ownership, just as car owners do. Miller proposed a “one-stop” procedure through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in which boaters could apply for their title and boat registration. Those who purchased boats prior to the proposed bill’s enactment would get boat titles when they renew their registration. Miller said law enforcement, banks, and insurance companies

support the bill. “The fear is of an exorbitant fee,” he said. Philip Burton, Gainesville Marina President and former president of The Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta, indicated MTA supports the bill in combination with a sales tax cap. “It needs some work,” he added. LLA officials have said titling would help trace owners of abandoned boats on Lanier. Executive Director Joanna Cloud said LLA’s community outreach has garnered strong support of the bill around Lanier and metro Atlanta. Unterman suggested outreach needs to extend to south Georgia, where anglers around Lake Blackshear adamantly opposed the bill in the past. See Funding, page 26

ley, www.jimboonlanier.com, 770 542-7764. Striper Fishing Striper fishing is slow. October is “Lake Turnover” month and typically the slowest month of the year for striper fishing. This year is no exception and the fish are very difficult to find and when you do find them they will not bite. The good news is October is over and the cold temperatures should speed up the turnover process. We have been “fishing the bait” with some success. Check the creeks and fish the ones with the greatest amount of bait. Deploy weighted free lines and planner boards in addition to a couple of down rods. Look for the schooling activity to pick back up. The action is fast and the stripers do not stay on the surface long. A 5/8 ounce buck tail jig with a fluke continues to work well. Find the shad and this is when the Lowrance Structure Scan Side imaging technology can play a major role in successful fishing or not. Baitfish move into the creeks and bass follow them. Your traditional top water baits like Spooks, Red fins and Chug Bugs will also

work. You can also use a light spinning rod to pitch a blueback herring into a school of feeding stripers for some exciting action. You should also deploy a blueback herring on a free line out the back of the boat. Start your search in Gainesville Creek, Holly Park and Little River on the north end of the lake. Chestatee Bay and Chestatee River mid lake and the mouths of the creeks from Flat Creek to Young Deer Creek. This striper report is from Big Fish On Guide Service, www.bigfishonguide.com, 404 561- 2564. Crappie Fishing If you are fishing in the northern lake areas, you will notice cooler water temperatures and a change in the water color. We are experiencing the typical fall pattern a few weeks later than usual, but fishing conditions are good to excellent. The bigger fish have finally appeared at the stand alone brush piles located in the middle to the back of creeks. The ideal brush piles to target should be at 25-foot depths, or shallower, with bait visible on your electronics. Keep in mind that the lake levels are about six feet below full pool,

so that means favorite brush piles you normally fish this time of year may not have sufficient depth to hold fish now. Your downscan electronics can help you determine whether fish are holding on the brush piles you find. Our club members are reporting great catches. This is a wonderful time of the year to get on fish and catch them steadily. If you can locate fish in deeper brush piles, 30 to 35 feet, you may want to consider vertical jigging. The bite is very sensitive. Bobby Garland in different colors, Crappie Assassin, Jiffy Jigs and tube jigs are all working equally well. If you have a favorite jig, just try it. Chances are it will work well. If you are fishing with someone, try using different jigs and see what’s working best at that location. Expect the bite to continue getting stronger as the water temperature drops. This crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. Visit: www.laniercrappieanglers. net. Best fish story ever; Catching the big one

By Pamela A. Keene Twelve-year-old Ethan Daniel snagged a big one, a really big one – a 28-pounder – on a recent fishing trip with his dad Brady, their friend David Floyd and Lake Lanier fishing guide Doug Youngblood. But that was only part of the story. Sometimes it’s best to catch and release. “I’d been fishing on the lake before, but always from a dock, never in a boat with a fishing guide,” Ethan said. “I certainly wasn’t expecting to catch such a big fish.” Here’s how the trip came about: Floyd asked Brady and Ethan to go on a guided trip with Youngblood in September just for fun. Ethan, who was diagnosed with cancer last March, was on a break from chemotherapy treatments at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, so it was to be a special dad-and-son day on the lake. “We were enjoying a great day and had caught around 12 to 15 average-sized stripers when toward the end of the trip Ethan hooked a monster,” Floyd said. “A battled ensued, with Ethan working the fish for 10 to 15 minutes, all by himself.” When Ethan landed the striper, Youngblood was just as surprised as the other two adults on the boat. “We weighed it on the boat and it was 28 pounds,” Youngblood said. “On my trips we usually catch a couple this size each year, but this was the first one for 2017. And I do around 250 charters each year. This one will certainly be memorable.”

At first, Youngblood and the other adults suggested that they keep the fish to be mounted. “Even though Doug doesn’t usually advocate mounting fish, this one was a goliath, a once-in-a-lifetime fish,” Floyd said. “We expected Ethan to beg his dad to keep it, but he didn’t say a word. Then Brady suggested that we let him go. Ethan quickly agreed.” They released the fish. “At first, he just floated belly up, probably because he was so tired from the battle,” Floyd said. “Doug said that was normal, so we all cheered the fish on for several minutes, See Fish, page 14

Christmas Parade of Lights ups the stakes with Waverunner, other prizes By Pamela A. Keene Sparkling lights festoon boats on Lake Lanier for the 2017 Lake Lanier Parade of Boats on Saturday, December 9, as they make their way to Lanier Islands and one of the lake’s treasured holiday traditions. Produced by Lanier Partners of North Georgia, the event raises money for children’s charities – Hall County Sheriff’s Youth Home, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and Toys 4 Tots. “This year, we’re making the event even bigger by adding some great prizes,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners. “Park Marine has made it possible for us to raffle a brand-new Yamaha Waverunner VX and trailer as our raffle grand prize, and anyone can purchase tickets. You don’t need to have a boat in the parade, but – of course – we encourage everyone to come out with their decorated boat, too.” The organization expects a

large number of boats to register this year. “As we did last year, we’re marshaling boats at each of the lake’s marinas for preliminary judging,” Geib said. “Then we’ll assemble on the lake to head to Lanier Islands and Sunset Cove, led by TowBoatUS and the Hall County Sheriffs escort.” Marinas include Holiday, Holiday-Lazy Days, Aqualand, Baldridge, Habersham, Hideaway Bay, Port Royale, Gainesville, University Yacht Club and Sunrise Cove. Boat-owners with private docks may contact their nearest marina to be included in the marina judging, or they can join the fleets as they assemble in the lake for marshaling. “The idea is to award as many trophies as possible, based on participation,” Geib said. “For instance, with the individual marina judging, one trophy will be given for each five entries. Then the winners from each marina will be judged for the overall prizes.” Entry fees are $75 for cruisers, pontoon boats and sailboats. Houseboat captains pay $125. All registrants are asked to bring a brand-new unwrapped toy to the

event. The registration fee includes two souvenir T-shirts, a captain’s goodies box, a reserved boat slip in Sunset Cove on D, E, or F docks, and a complimentary bus tour of Lanier Islands Magical Nights of Lights on December 9. Houseboats will be provided with alternative open-water mooring. Spectators can view the parade from LanierWorld and walk the docks at Sunset Cove Marina to view the entries up close and talk with captains and crews. “People who bring a new unwrapped toy to the gate that night A Yamaha Waverunner is the grand prize for this year’s boat parade. will receive a discount admission for the evening,” Geib said. “And the festivities will continue throughout the evening at Sunset Continued from Page 12 Cove and Lanier World with fun for everyone.” until he finally swam off like a ging on the line,” Ethan said. “I In addition, the activities with shot. “You could hear us cheer- know he must have been tired, the 25th Annual Magical Nights ing all across the lake. Winter prediction: Warmer and drier than normal After the record high temperatures last month and the air that came from the tropical rainforests of Central America, courtesy of Hurricane Nate, I bet you thought we would never see any cool weather last month. We did of course and now everyone is asking what the weather will be like this winter. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) issued its winter weather outlook and it looks like we’re going to see a very typical La Nina pattern. We are currently in a La Nina Watch. In the simplest of explanations, La Nina is part of a cyclical pattern of ocean warming (El Nino) and ocean cooling (La Nina) in the eastern or central equatorial Pacific Ocean. If you’re asking what ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean has to do with our winter weather, the answer is: A lot! This pocket of cooler sea-surface temperatures off the west coast of South America along the equator disrupts global wind patterns. It forces the polar branch of the jet stream to stay farther north. This will mean the southern states will generally warmer and drier than average. That being said, we will still see blasts of cold arctic air plunge into the Southeast from time to time. However, the overall average temperatures will be much warmer for us. If you are wondering about snow, I think we should all be more concerned about ice. I have been forecasting the

weather for north Georgia for the better part of 36 years. I have seen a Glenn thing or two. It has been my experience that we Burns will see many more “Wedge” type weather Lanier events with a La Nina. Outlook The technical name for the wedge is CAD or Cold Air Damming. When an arctic high pressure systems breaks loose and drive across Canada into the northeast part of the country, the clockwise wind circulation around the high drives a shallow layer of cold air south. The air is cold and dense and behaves much like water. The Appalachian Mountains act like a dam, funneling the shallow layer of cold air into north Georgia. The air is frequently coldest around Hall County. In a typical CAD event, winds above ground are coming in from the southwest at about 3,000 to 5,000 feet. This southwest wind is transporting moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. The result is drizzle or light rain falling into the shallow layer of cold dry air. As the precipitation falls, some will evaporate. As we all know, evaporation is a cooling process. So the rain falling will make the surface air even colder. Now the problems will begin. We have the beginning of an ice storm. Accumulating ice will cause extremely hazardous driving, especially on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roads, not to mention massive power outages from the ice accumulating on power lines.

High court lists water lawsuit on term calendar By Jane Harrison The U.S. Supreme Court put the Florida verses Georgia lawsuit over water on its October 2017 calendar, but as of late October had not set a hearing date. Justices listed 45 cases for the calendar, which extends into June 2018. Arguments in several cases began last month and the court schedule showed no date for water war arguments through the rest of this year. The court’s “Granted and Noted List” stated it is “set for oral argument in due course.” No one from either state’s attorney general’s office will comment on the case, except that each retains the same outside legal counsel. Both rely on Washington, DC attorneys to carry on. Lake Lanier Caucus Chair Renee Unterman told officials gathered in Gainesville last month that Ga. Attorney General Chris Carr declined to send a representative to the meeting for an update. Clyde Morris, legal representative for the Lake Lanier Association, complained that the state’s office could have at least sent a staff member to say “we can’t comment.” The deep south water battle is one of two legal contests on the Supreme Court calendar pitting states against their neighbors for the precious resource. Florida fired off against the Peach State in an Oct. 2013 lawsuit accusing Georgia of draining more than its share from the river system that supplies Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Earlier that year, Texas targeted New Mexico and Colorado, accusing them of violating Rio Grande water compact. Although disagreements over water, a valuable life-sustaining, economic commodity, have been ongoing since civilization began, the U.S. Supreme Court has rarely granted state water squabbles a hearing. The Texas and Georgia legal actions, titled 141 Original and 142 Original, represent the 141st

and 142nd such cases ever appearing on the federal court calendar. Federal justices will hear Florida’s pleas to throw out a Special Master’s recommendations to deny its claims. Georgia won a pre-hearing victory in February this year when Special Master Ralph Lancaster concluded Florida could not prove that limiting Georgia’s water supply would remedy its downstream woes. Lancaster rendered his recommendation after more than two years of discovery and a fiveweek evidentiary hearing in a Portland, Maine courtroom. Lake Lanier area residents and water users have particular interest in the case which involves a primary resource and amenity. The 39,000-acre lake is the largest reservoir on the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system that extends from north Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico. Lanier is the northernmost of five impoundments the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates on the rivers. The Special Master based his denial of Florida’s claims on evidence Georgia produced that no matter what happens with upstream water use, it is the Corps that holds the spigot. Florida’s lawsuit did not target the Corps, which would have required Florida to get a waiver of sovereign immunity to sue a federal agency. Georgia attorneys anchored their case on the Corps’ control of water flow. Lancaster concurred. “Without the ability to bind the Corps, I am not persuaded that the court can assure Florida the relief it seeks. I conclude that Florida has not proven by clear and convincing evidence that its injury can be redressed by an order equitably apportioning the waters,” he wrote. In a series of exceptions and replies submitted after the Special Master’s submission, Florida claimed that the Corps’ operation manual for the rivers states it

could consider potential changes for water flow pending a court decision. But, the Corps also noted that since it is not a party in the lawsuit its operations are not an issue and it is not compelled to act. Georgia’s replies support the Special Master’s conclusions. Florida offered its exceptions as a final cry for the Apalachicola region’s survival. Its livelihood is based on oyster fisheries, which need fresh water to thrive. Lancaster indicated he did not find Georgia completely blameless for troubles downstream. He wrote that evidence showed farmers along the Flint River watered crops nearly without restriction and the metropolitan Atlanta was slow to cut back on water use during drought. During pre-trial activity, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal set up an agricultural water permitting task force and in June allotted $10.5 million for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to oversee the state water metering program. Each state has spent upward of $40 million in the legal action. Some Florida water watchdogs have mourned their state’s investment in a lawsuit rather than in propping up the infrastructure of Apalachicola’s oyster industry. Craig Primis, of Kirkland & Ellis, has Georgia’s nod to argue before the Supreme Court. He won “Litigator of the Week” in February from the National Law Journal, which declared him as “winning the water year” after the Special Master’s recommendation. Georgia Solicitor General Sarah Hawkins Warren, who formerly worked with Kirkland & Ellis as outside counsel on the water case, is leading the effort from the Georgia office. Gregory G. Garre, of Lathem & Watkins, is counsel of record for Florida. Also a former Litigator of the Week and U.S. Solicitor General, he has argued 41 cases before the Supreme Court, according to his law firm’s website.

I hope everyone enjoyed the boating season this year. Now is the time to check your maintenance log and make a list of what needs to be repaired or replaced. Start in the bilge with the fuel system. Check line, filter, hose clamps and replace where needed. Don’t forget to put a fuel treatment like Sta-Bil in your fuel tank and make sure you put enough for a full tank of fuel. Check your water system and bilge pump and seacock. If your hose clamps are of different types, you might want to get a universal type made from maritime stainless steel, which would use the same wrench. This way when you check hose clamps they will all use the same tool to tighten or change them. While you are in the bilge, check your batteries and wiring. If your batteries need to be replaced, wait until spring and you will have a longer warranty. While in the bilge, and of course it is dirty, now is the time to clean it. If you have an out-

board or outdrive unit, check the oil in the lower unit. If it has water in it the prop shaft then the seal needs to be replaced. If the water pump impeller is two years old, it will need to be replaced. Check the props on all units. Repair where needed and you will be ready for next season. If the time is right, you might also want to tune-up the engines and generator, if so equipped. Don’t forget to winterize your boat trailer if you use one. Grease or replace wheel bearings as needed. Check all navigation aids and safety equipment. A good cleaning and waxing will make it easier to get ready in the spring. If you have some

items like PFDs, lines, bumpers, or fire extinguishers, etc. you might want to make a list for Santa. If you have, any questions contact a member of the USCG Auxiliary and they will be glad to help. Make a list of everything you have done and put it on your maintenance log and it will be ready for your next season. Winter cruise If you get tired of watching football and want to go cruising, you might want to go online and charter or rent a boat to cruise Charlotte Harbor or Lake Okeechobee rim canal. You’ll see old Florida and if the weather changes you’ll be on the inside on protected water. Go online and check the cruising guide for places to visit like Cabbage Key, or Ussepa Island. North Georgia Crappie Anglers: Teaching kids to fish

• Funding

Kids from across North Georgia got a chance to fish with members of the North Georgia Crappie Anglers in October. “Many of these youngsters had never been fishing before, so club members brought their boats out to the lake for a tournament and cookout,” said Woodie Malone, president of the 180-member club. “We’ve done these events before for members and their children and grandchildren, but this is the first time we’ve opened it up to youth organizations in Hall and Forsyth counties.” Each youngster received a ZEBCO fishing rod, paid for by the club. O’Neill Williams and event chairman Gary Gibbs posed with participants after the event.

Continued from Page 2 In other reports to the caucus: • Cloud reported that the $25,000 state allocation and matching funds from Hall and Forsyth County for removing abandoned vessels on Lanier has been exhausted moving four large, steel hulled houseboats. Seventeen docks, two dock/vessel combinations, and 12 vessels remain on the LLA abandoned or derelict dock project list. Hall County Solicitor Stephanie Woodard said she was looking at creative ways to prosecute those who leave vessels and dilapidated docks, possibly with littering charges. • DNR District Chief Enforcement Officer Johnny Johnson said fatalities, injuries, boating incidents and boating under the influence arrests thus far in 2017 are down from 2016 totals. As of Oct. 16, DNR reported four deaths by drowning, one boating fatality, 11 injuries, 24 boating incidents and 47 BUIs on Lanier compared to nine drownings, eight boating fatalities, 24 injuries, 35 boating incidents, and 62 BUIs in 2016. Johnson credited a statewide education initiative for helping reduce the number of drownings. • Cloud distributed a chart showing a Lanier summer full pool analysis depicting the percentage of days June-Aug. the lake has measured at full pool since the 1970s. The analysis indicates that the lake attained its summer full pool of 1,071 feet

Young angler Berkley Starr, above, shows off her catch with NGCA president Woodie Malone.

nearly half the time in the 1970s. It was full slightly less in 30 percent of summer days in the 1980s and slightly more than 30 percent in the 1990s. However, the percentage dropped to about 20 percent in the 2000s and about 14 percent this decade. All the while, Georgia’s population, for which Lanier is a major water supplier, more than doubled from about five million to just more than 11 million. LLA officer Wilton Rooks suggested “multiple factors,” not just population growth, drain Lanier. “We’re not suggesting a slow down on growth,” he said, adding a dialogue with downstream users and a management study of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water releases might help determine what is causing lower summer lake levels. • LLA officials expressed relief that the Georgia EPD kept a Level 1 drought response in 12 counties in the Lake Lanier watershed. The designation limits water use and suggests water municipal suppliers encourage conservation. “The drought may be over, but the impact of the drought lingers on Lanier. It takes the lake a long time to recover,” Cloud said. • Local real estate agent Sheila Davis, from the Norton Agency, reported lake homes are in demand and inventory is “about half of what it should be. Prices are very strong.”

It’s Magical Nights of Lights’ 25th birthday Meet the company behind all those lights: Universal Concepts Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene he silver anniversary of Lanier Island’s Magical Nights of Lights promises some all-new displays and a return to the traditions that have made the drive-through Christmas light show a big draw in the Southeast. When it opens on November 17, the 7-mile holiday display will be bigger and better than ever.

T

“This year, we’re returning to the great traditions that are the foundation of Magical Nights of Lights,” said Missy Burgess, director of public relations at Lanier Islands. “For instance, people have been asking about the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ display for the past several years, so it’s coming back in 2017. And we’re also creating some big surprises, including a gigantic decorated Christmas tree at the clock tower and a brand-new sparkling red 3D tunnel of lights, presented by Coca-Cola.” Man behind the show Over the past six or seven

Greg Fulwood chats with an employee in the company’s Cumming warehouse.

months, Islands’ staff has been working closely with the display’s original and long-time designer, Greg Fulwood, who owns Universal Concepts. Over the years, his Cumming-based company has created light and sound spectaculars for theme parks, major sporting events and national attractions. His work with the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Dollywood, several Six Flags Theme Parks, plus several Super Bowl extravaganzas, keeps him in high demand all year long. “It was really a quirk of fate that I’m even in this business,” said the 63-year-old Fulwood, who’s an avid boater and musician. He graduated from Newberry College in South Carolina with a bachelor of arts degree, focusing on political science, married, then took a job with a lighting company in California in his mid-20s. By 1980, he was ready to open his own company and chose to concentrate on creating commercial holiday lighting and décor. “Our Christmas business is our bread and butter, but we handle all types of projects,” he said. “Our most outrageous to date was a project for the Superdome when we actually designed lighting for the outside of the building. It included an animated 65- by 150foot display with all the bells and whistles. We literally used every skill we had.” For the third year, Universal Concepts has created Harbor Lights for Gulfport, Mississippi’s Winter Festival. “It’s the largest RGB light show in the world,” Fulwood said. “And with all the new technology, it just keeps getting better.” World record broken Universal Concepts also broke a Guinness Book of World Records by installing the world’s largest self-standing 137-foot Christmas Tree at Florida’s Cypress Gardens, now Legoland Fla. After the holiday season the display was converted to a giant colorful, animated spring/hibiscus floral bouquet. It’s keeping up with technol-

ogy that makes a good lighting company an excellent partner. “Lighting designs have changed with new technology and manufacturing techniques,” he said. “Back in the day, we used incandescent bulbs and totally different materials for the structures. Today, everything’s LED, which is much more environmentally friendly and the lights last so much longer. Plus, with computer technology we can program animation, not only to make displays appear to be moving, but also to change colors. And we have 3-D displays that are simply dazzling.” For Fulwood, it must seem like every day is Christmas, being surrounded by giant reindeer, snowmen, towering Christmas trees, miles of lighted bows, ribbons, banners and colorful hanging icicles. But, he admits, it’s all in a day’s work. “Growing up in Stone Mountain with my parents and two brothers, we celebrated Christmas like most any family would do,” he said. “As I said, it was never really my vision to own a commercial lighting business, but it has been a great career so far. When we landed the contract with Lanier Islands 25 years ago, that was a real feather in our cap, because here we are a local Cumming company and we’re doing the annual Magical Nights of Lights for Lanier Islands – right in our own back yard. That’s saying something!” Ideas on napkins Back in those days 25 years ago, Fulwood met with the re-

sort’s officials and literally designed the early elements of the light show on the backs of cocktail napkins. “We drew out their ideas and collaborated on the parts of the show. And each year, it’s grown even more. We are so proud to still be working hand-in-hand with Lanier Islands, and especially the Williams family.” “There is no typical day for me,” he said. “I spend a great deal of time on the road between Los Angeles, Boston, Mississippi and Miami, then I’m at home in Cumming. That’s just the way it is and I really do enjoy getting to be so creative and to help cities, towns

and organizations kick up their community involvement a couple of notches.” Universal Concepts does much more than holiday displays and light shows. It creates fully lighted architectural lighting for skyscrapers, animated company logos, and lighting that’s soundactivated or sound-synchronized. The displays are often set to music. At Lanier Islands, Magical Nights of Lights will have its own radio broadcast of holiday music on FM 107.9. “For our guests, we have created a totally immersive holiday experience,” said Burgess. “And they’ll be able to experience all the fun of years past with Holiday Village, carnival rides and fireside activities like roasting marshmallows, all inside LanierWorld.” This year’s sponsors are Universal Concepts, Coca-Cola and Georgia Power. Admission per vehicle is $35 if purchased in advance online and $45 at the gate. “We can’t wait for the opening of Lanier Island’s Magical Nights of Lights this year,” Fulwood said. “You just need to come on out and keep your eyes wide open Snowflake tunnel at Magical for all the magical surprises in Nights of Lights. store for you and your family.”

Cherokee Bluffs Park popular with hikers, rich in history By Jane Harrison When it opened in late 2015, Hall County’s newest park already had a lot going for it: 2.37 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, grassy fields, picnic tables, pavilion, and community gathering areas on 168 acres in a history-rich setting. The latest addition at Cherokee Bluffs Park, a reassembled frontier-style log home, presents visitors opportunity to step back in time. New amenities – a nine-basket disc golf course, playground and dog park– are in the works this winter for the popular South Hall gem. “It has everything,” Pat Denote remarked recently after leading about a dozen Gainesville Newcomers Club members on a regular hike at the park. She ticked off the attractions: easy trails, a lake, amphitheater, meadows and of course, the namesake bluffs that sheltered Native Amer-

The grassy amphitheater.

icans and pioneer families. Last month county crews at the park hammered wood shingles over a two-story cabin originally built long before Hall County was formed. Known as the Robert/Orr log cabin, the structure once stood at the intersection of Hog Mountain and Wade Orr Road, a few miles from the “The Bluffs” on Blackjack Road. The structure dates back to the early 1800s and housed, among others, Col. James Roberts, a Civil War militia officer, according to records provided by Orr and Roberts family researchers. This month, visitors can walk inside the house where the Friendship community’s pioneers got their mail and provisions and Col. Roberts signed up soldiers. Chris Robinson, who supervised county workers re-assembling the cabin, said the logs – 12-inch hand-cut timbers – were stored in a tractor trailer for years awaiting resurrection. The Friendship community’s devotion to its roots also shows in the park’s history room, where resident Teresa Owens acted as curator to present photos, artifacts, family archives, and clothing replicating pioneer garb. The history room, housed adjacent to

an 89-person capacity “lodge” or banquet room, is open by request on weekdays by calling the Hall County Parks and Leisure office. The park’s most striking feature, a huge rock ledge hanging over the woodlands, offered a refuge on the border of Cherokee and Creek tribes and later became a temporary abode of early settlers of then Franklin County in the 1700s. Visitors are warned not to climb on the rocks. But, they can get up close on the trail that passes just underneath and alongside the stone outcrop. The tread way, which doubles as a mountain bike course, brings in the most visitors, said Hall County parks director Mike Little. “It’s heavily used,” he said, not just by folks who drive in but also by residents of the adjacent Sterling on Lanier development who walk in on the back acreage. On a crisp sunny October weekday afternoon, the Newcomers Club hikers shared the path with at least three trail runners who jogged gingerly over a few exposed roots. The 2.5 mile Bear Paw, which traverses above a small pond and through a predominately oak and pine forest, is just beginning to show the wear of hundreds of hiking shoes and

fat tires that have traveled through the woods and underneath some old blackjack oaks standing sentry. Benches on the .08 mile Lake Loop invite hikers and bikers to recline for a packed lunch or a moment’s repose. Anglers can fish in the pond, but signs inform them to release their catch. A .04 Connector Trail provides a short cut between Lake Loop and Bear Paw, plus a sidetrip along a scenic creek. The park director said the 90person amphitheatre and lodge are becoming popular wedding

and reception sites. However, he said a concert at the amphitheatre brought a disappointingly small turnout. Two “practice baskets” tempt disc golf players at the edge of the meadow near the bluffs. Little said work should commence on a nine-basket course this winter for opening in the spring. He expects a play ground and dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs, similar to the one at Laurel Park, to be ready by December. There are currently no plans for new trails.

Warm up for fall and winter with a back-yard fire pit Things are heating up for winter back-yard entertaining. More and more people find that adding a fire pit opens a world of possibilities for friends, family or just a romantic evening. “People are using them as a focal point for entertaining, creating great ambience, or even for cooking,” said Jason Brosche, owner of Art of Stone Gardening. “Today’s designs are so versatile – from traditional round fire pits to fire-proof vessels, gas starters to those that are manually lighted.” They can be constructed in various sizes and shapes to complement the setting, such as quarter-rounds, squares, circles and rectangles. And they can be made of boulders, natural or manufactured flagstone or other fireproof materials. “We are being asked more and more to install metal swing arms to hold Dutch ovens or grates that can be used with iron skillets,” he said. “And a search of the internet turns up many recipes that are excellent cooked over the open fire.” Firepits can either be installed on top of the ground, fully or par-

And placing them on an extended patio provides even more flexibly for seating. The best way to start a firepit is to stack seasoned firewood into a teepee in the center with some newspapers or kindling below. If you have a gas starter, first light the newspaper or kindling, then turn on the gas a bit. Once the wood has caught fire, turn off the gas. If you don’t have a gas starter, you’ll need a little more patience. “The primary consideration is

safety,” he said. “We use firebrick for safety and heat retention. The location of your firepit is very important, and remember that firepits are not intended to be used as burn piles.” The latest trends create the ambience of flames and a bit of warmth, although some models don’t produce a great deal of heat. Typically, gas-powered, they use fire glass or lava rocks rather than wood or hot embers. The flames are usually blue. PS – A bit about pansies: If you can find 4-inch pansies, you still have a little time to plant them before November 10 or so. Our warmer fall pushed the planting season by a week or so, but get them in early, fertilize them and keep them watered. Pamela A. Classic cars and southern hospitality mix at Chateau Elan event Classic cars from every era captivate the imagination and passionate love of the automobile in every red blooded American. Combine that with a gorgeous fall weekend in the elegance of Don Panoz’s Chateau Elan Resort and Vineyards, and you experience an unforgettable event that all can enjoy! The 2017 Atlanta Concours d’ Elegance, in it’s second year, was spawned by Harry Krix and Bill Wallet and given the blessings of automotive entrepreneur and owner of Chateau Elan, Don Panoz. This year’s event featured nearly 200 cars and a dozen motorcycles that began with some of the first gas powered vehicles ever made to modern day classics like Ferrari, Bentley, Porsche and Panoz. Though every attendee seemed to find that one car they have always dreamed of seeing in its original condition, the organizers had some special surprises this year. Fabulous Fins of the Fifties was a big hit which included many bold rear fin designs from the ’50s and ’60s that coincided with the beginning of the jet age in America. Hundreds of spectators were seen rambling throughout the huge field of priceless cars while conversing with their owners, who were often clad in period outfits. Near the center of the immaculate golf course where all the cars were displayed was an elevated stage where numerous speakers presented interesting information on all facets of the classic automotive world. For the owners and presenters of these fantastic automobiles and motorcycles, a serious competi-

This years Best of Show American was the 1930 Packard SP Phaeton owned by the Cofer Collection in Tucker, Ga., and the Best of Show European went to the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K owned by Evergreen Historic Automobiles in Missouri. Founder, Harry Krix presented to Rob Adams a trophy that best exemplified the spirit of the show and is dedicated to his late wife Karen. Adams’ car is a 1956 Arnott Sports Climax, which was the first car designed and built by a woman. The special honoree this year was famous motorsports broadcaster, Bob Varsha, who was the long time voice of the Formula One World Championship. In his youth, he was a world class runner, but has appeared on almost every network for all facets of motor racing throughout his career. Most of us in this country are in love with our cars because they evoke memories of wonderful times in our lives ... or maybe our Walter Mitty dreams. Whatever
