By Jane Harrison A Georgia Tech University professor whose research contributed to a tri-state water sharing plan must produce non-privileged emails sought by Florida attorneys in a federal lawsuit. Special Master Ralph Lancaster granted Florida’s request for email records from Dr. Martin Kistenmacher, hydrologist and assistant director of the Georgia Water Resources Institute.

Florida attorneys believe the professor’s emails related to a hydrology modeling project from 2012 to 2015 will show how Georgia’s upstream consumption of water for agriculture and other uses impacts river flows on the Apalachicola. Attorney Philip Perry stated Florida’s intent in an Oct. 20 teleconference with Lancaster and Georgia attorneys.

The special master is presiding over pre-trial proceedings in the Florida v. Georgia lawsuit over water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system.

Florida filed suit in Oct. 2013 alleging that Georgia is hoarding water on the Chattahoochee and Flint, causing low flows on the Apalachicola River that nourishes the Panhandle’s oyster fisheries.

Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on that river system.

Each state has subpoenaed and sent depositions to a number of university professors from both states whose research teams worked on a Sustainable Water Management Plan for the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint Stakeholders.

The private, non-profit organization of water users from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama raised more than $1.7 million and devoted six years to develop a plan they hoped would promote a scientific solution to the tri-state water dispute. Now, research that they anticipated might avert legal wrangling seems to have become central to Florida’s case. Lancaster has forbidden ACFS officials and other sources involved with the case from communicating with the media.

Transcripts of the teleconference prior to Lancaster’s decision regarding the emails reveal Florida’s intent to employ researcher’s findings to support the state’s claims.

Perry said Kristenmacher’s and the GWRI’s hydrologic modeling will show “the flow of water into Florida and the effect of

Georgia consumption for agriculture and other uses, agricultural irrigation specifically, on that flow.”

He told Lancaster, “Your Honor, we believe that – that the hydrologic modeling here will be an important part of this case.

That the experts from both Georgia and Florida will have competing hydrologic models. And that Dr. Kistenmacher and GWRI’s work will support Florida’s,

rather than Georgia’s, assessment of the relevant hydrologic principles. And, also, that Dr. Kistenmacher and GWRI’s work will identify very specific serious weaknesses in Georgia's case.”

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down 3.6 feet Clarity: Slightly stained in creeks, main lake clear Temperature: High 60s Bass fishing Bass fishing on Lake Lanier has been good in recent weeks.

The recent rains have not had much of an effect on the water levels, and the surface tempera-

tures have only cooled slightly.

We have been starting most mornings in the backs of creeks.

The spinnerbait bite at daylight has improved lately, but most fish are still coming on the Chattahoochee Jig and Crossball jig head and trick worm combo.

The fish often are very shallow in the mornings on clay and rock banks, usually eight feet or less.

We have been running this pattern until around 10 a.m. After that, we have been moving out to the brush in 18 to 25 feet of water on humps and points in the mouths of creeks and throwing topwater such as a Chug Bug, shallow running jerk baits such as the Spro McStick, as well as a variety of swimbaits for some very good bites.

Some of the brush is absolutely loaded now and coughing up big fish. The stripers have moved shallow on some days and we are starting to catch those guys now too.

The schooling bite has really picked up as well. You may run across some massive packs of bass and stripers getting it done on top. The Sebile seemed to be the best bait overall.

We have also worked in some steeper rock areas with the jig and worm, typically in the mouths of creeks, for some good fish as well.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Fieldale poised to gain naming rights on Olympic Tower

By Jane Harrison The logo of an industry prominent in local economy for more than 50 years may be emblazoned on the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue tower if a recent proposal is finalized. For a $250,000 donation, Fieldale Farms Corporation would get 5-year renewable naming rights on the tower that will reign over next May’s canoe/kayak 2016 Olympic qualifier. The corporate image would be painted high above the lake whose main shoreline county, Hall, is touted to be among the nation’s largest poultry producers.

Fieldale President Tom Hensley told Lakeside News he expected his board of directors to approve the proposal in late October. The sponsorship agreement would put the poultry processing giant’s Springer Mountain Farms logo on the white painted section above the rower or kayaker image.

Mini Collins, chairperson of the LLOV governing board, told members that Hensley visited the venue for about three hours and that he “saw the value of what’s going on out here.” The sponsorship would be the initial private sector investment into a planned $1.6 million upgrade of the facility originally built for 1996 Olympic canoe/kayak and rowing competition.

Hensley said a week before his board was to vote on the proposal that he felt it was “tentatively accepted.” Asked what return he expected on a quarter million dollar investment, he replied “We don’t.”

“We are part of the community and the largest employer in Hall County. We have people on the lake.

This is a contribution to the community,” he said. He also mentioned Gainesville’s Olympic legacy and the opportunity to help finance venue improvements to make it shine in front of national and international visitors.

Collins said that she’s excited about the title sponsorship and that she hopes other potential donors will follow Fieldale’s lead. She added that one individual has derided the sponsorship deal as a “selling of your soul.”

But Gainesville Hall ’96 board members don’t see it that way, but instead as a generous gift that reflects a prominent local company’s confidence in their plans for the venue. “Look at Atlanta,” remarked Gainesville-Hall ’96 member Kit Dunlap, also presi-

dent of the Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce. Atlanta grabbed substantial commercial investment to put on the 1996 Summer Olympics.

The announcement of Fieldale’s tentative sponsorship came in the midst of a fundraising drive to pay for upgrades planned for the May 19-22 Pan American canoe/kayak championships at LLOV. The final Olympic qualifier for paddlers and rowers hoping to go to the Summer 2016 Olympics in Brazil is expected bring hundreds of international visitors to Gainesville and will focus attention on the venue’s and region’s hospitality and efficacy for hosting a high stakes event.

Financing for venue improvements so far has consisted of $35,000 from an anonymous donor, $15,000 from the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, a $300,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant, and $800,000 from Gainesville and Hall County general funds and Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax budgets.

The Gainesville-Hall ’96 board has set a tentative groundbreaking ceremony for Nov. 5 at the venue. The first phase, necessary for the Pan Am Games, includes basic upgrades at the tower and service building on the plaza. Additional phases would install a concrete accessibility ramp on the tower side of the venue and replace restrooms, build a pavilion, and renovate the boathouse across Clarks Bridge Road.

Figures from contractors invited to bid on the project were expected by late October. Architect Robin Millard, from local firm Millard, Inc., reported bid invitations were sent to seven contractors, mostly local. He said he recommended extending targeted bid invitations rather than advertising for bids “because of the deadlines … we didn’t want just anybody to bid, just in case there are problems.”

The goal is to complete most of the work by March 28, when a regional scholastic regatta comes to Lake Lanier. The John Hunter Regatta website already posts the organizers’ expectation: “2016 will see a new and vastly improved venue.”

That is what GH ’96 hopes for, too, for that regatta and the one in May that puts LLOV in an international spotlight.

It took me until the age of 21 to realize that my parents were smarter than I thought they were.

Two days earlier I had replaced the VHF antenna. After explaining this to the mechanic he inspects the wiring for the VHF and discovers that I had cut the control cable to the stern thruster by mistake and in less than 10 minutes he had the thruster operational.

I tell this story on myself only to suggest that despite all attempts we simply are not equipped to do all things. This mechanic may not know how blood flows through the heart, or the dietary effects on blood sugar, but thank goodness he was a professional mechanic and knew that there was something strange about why that thruster was not working.

As it turned out, in my infinite

wisdom, I was the culprit.

What did I learn from this?

First, the mechanic was paid $1,100 for his time to fix a $10 problem. Second, I should have brought in an electrician to replace the VHF wiring, and third, I should have known better.

I have read the manuals, explored the unknown and dearly paid the price before learning my lesson. Things like this are better left to the professionals. I am thankful they chose a different path in life. Their experience is worth its weight in gold so if you haven’t done so lately, let the pros around you know how much you appreciate the quality work they perform to keep you out of the dog house.

Lanier Islands marina expands for houseboats

By Pamela A. Keene Houseboat owners can now have their own slips at Lanier Islands. In an expansion of the resort’s marina, more than a dozen slips are available for 12-month leases. Located on the east side of the islands, the docks are called Harbor Landing East.

“The 65-foot uncovered slips can accommodate houseboats up to 70 feet long,” said Barkley

Geib, manager of the Island’s Sunset Cove Marina, which has been fully leased since April.

“This is an excellent opportunity for houseboaters to store their boats here and enjoy all the amenities of Lanier Islands, such as golf privileges, hotel and resort

Fall equals fun on the lake with fewer crowds November can be a great time of the year to take the family and friends out for a day of recreational boating, picnicking, leaf viewing and generally having a great time. Air temperatures are just right to brisk and water temps are still in the moderate range. At the time of the writing of this article, Lake Lanier is slightly below normal pool, a rare occurrence compared to past years.

While recreational boating slows down during the fall, fishermen and some boaters will still find their way out on the water for a day of relaxation and fun. The Coast Guard Auxiliary closes its Operation Center at the end of September, so we will not be monitoring radio traffic until next May. Boating accident statistics give us a warning, however, about boating during October, November and December. I have access to U.S. Coast Guard boating accident statistics for 2014, and they give us reason to be concerned.

Trauma, drowning and hypothermia continue to rank one, two and three as causes of death on the water. The highest percentage of accidents resulting in death occurred in October (17 percent), November (20 percent) and December (19 percent). The other nine months ranged from 11 percent to 20 percent (April.).

Hypothermia is not “freezing to death,” nor is it “frostbite,” and it can kill at temperatures well above freezing. To give you an idea of how much time you have if you fall overboard when the water temperature drops, consider

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary began as ‘Coastal Picket Forces’ During World War II there were close to 60 ships sunk by German submarines off the northern Gulf Coast. One sinking was the S.S. Robert E. Lee about 25 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Almost 100 lives were lost. The Coast Guard escort ship would claim the only sinking of a German submarine off the southern U.S. coast line.

This incident was one of many that also occurred off the East Coast and Florida straits. The German U-boats referred to it as the “American Hunting Season.”

Around this critical time a surprising ragtag fleet of recreational boaters, owners of schooners and power boats offered up their personal boats for anti-submarine operations along the American coastline. They called themselves “Coastal Picket Forces.” One of the most famous of these volunteers was Ernest Hemingway and his 38’ Wheeler “Pilar.” They cruised the Florida straits in search of German U-boats while armed with only grenades and Thompson submachine guns.

These volunteers also became vital in rescuing seamen from torpedoed vessels, freeing up the Coast Guard to actively hunt marauding U-boats.

In 1941, Popular Science Magazine ran an article discussing this new citizen wing of the Coast Guard that recently organized. By the end of the war, the Coastal Picket Forces were formally recognized, and the organization was absorbed into what is now known as the modern day U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary which still patrols our coastlines today. They also inspect your boats for proper equipment and safety. And they have boating classes, and if you pass and get a certificate it could lower your boat insurance by 10 percent. The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has a proud and dedicated history in boating.

Forty five teams competed; the last four teams were skunked. The winning team: East Hall High School Vikings’ fishermen; Tristan Thomas, Dakota Crumley and Hunter Buffington had 12 lbs. 13 oz. of fish to beat out the second place team, Hazel Green, 12 lbs.

New I/O engines Mercury Marine now builds its own total motors and does not use automotive blocks like the old 454c.i. model that was quite a gas guzzler. They have introduced a 6.2 liter V-8 engine in 300 and 350 H.P. models for inboard and I/O, built from the ground up.

These models are more economical and much quieter as the air intake faces toward the stern rather than the helm.

Volvo also has some new models based on GM’s 4.3 liter V-6.

They are 200 and 240 H.P. for both inboard and I/O installation.

I can’t help but think what would happen if GM quit making V-8 and V-6 blocks and the automotive company had to buy their engine blocks from Mercury Marine. That would sure be a switch, but interesting to say the least.

Diesel outboards are being built by Mercury Marine since the Department of Defense made a “one fuel directive,” meaning diesel. This engine will not be available in a civilian version.

The horsepower also was not noted with this announcement. I would guess the horsepower would fall between 200 and 300 H.P. A Swedish manufacturer has introduced the OXE 200 H.P. diesel outboard which complies with NATO’s single fuel directive but is also being tested for nonmilitary applications. It is based on a General Motors diesel, mounted horizontally with the transmission at the power head and belts driving the propeller.

Florida to Cuba record Forest Johnson, known for his fast 37’ prowler boats, set a record from Florida to Cuba in 1958 of 6 hours and 24 minutes.

The record was recently broken by “Apachestar” recently and the 100 miles was covered in one and

a half hours: a new powerboat record.

I met Forest Johnson at his factory on the Miami River when he had some 24’ molds for sale, which my partners and I bought. I finished the molds and we built a 24’ center console and cuddy cabin. It was powered with a Mercury inboard and was a great boat for Tarpon fishing. We sold a bunch of them and then sold the molds. The last one I saw was a police boat in Naples, Florida.

Jack Beachem, who built Holiday and Lazy-Days marinas here on Lake Lanier, as well as LazyDay houseboats, had an open Forest Johnson prowler. It was a similar model to the one that was in the 1970 Bahamas 500.

Prowlers were famous for rum running; they were fast and sea worthy.

Treasure hunting update Brent Brisben, who bought the rights to the 11 ships that were lost in a 1715 hurricane off Vero Beach Florida from Mel Fisher’s heirs, not only hunts for treasure himself, but sublets the right to other treasure hunters. One family found 50 gold coins; most were what are called “Royals” which were crafted to look and feel impressive. The coins were worth about $1 million. Brisben’s own team found 350 coins, and nine “Royals,” a total value of about $4.5 million.

He says the trick is getting in the trough between the reefs and the beach. There is about five or six feet of sand which has to be blown away. They then go through broken limestone with gaps, shelves and fissures. They excavate that and then all the cracks and fissures hold hundreds of gold coins. Brisben says there is another $400 million out there and plans to keep looking.

October is, in a word, comfortable October is usually one of the nicest weather months of the year for the Southeast. It turned out to be absolutely gorgeous but last month got off to a rather shaky start. It was indeed, the Perfect Storm.

When the first set of computer models came out early in October, they showed a developing tropical system over the Caribbean. A few days later, Hurricane Joaquin was born. Most all of the models, except for the European model, kept the storm out to sea. All the others brought it to the mid-Atlantic coast.

Regardless of Joaquin’s eventual land fall prediction, our best models showed something I had not ever seen before. It was basically, an “atmospheric river” of moisture spinning off the hurricane and connecting with a massive low pressure in the upper atmosphere over the Southeast. I immediately thought South Carolina and North Carolina were going to see some incredible rainfall totals. The model data coming out in the days ahead showed as much as two feet of rain in some areas. As it turned out, the upper level low over the Southeast was tapping into moisture from the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and moisture from Hurricane Joaquin. All of this moisture was flowing like a firehose into the Carolinas. In addition, we had a Supermoon. The moon was much closer to Earth at that time and its gravity was creating extraordinarily high tides. In the Carolinas, water runs downhill from the

Piedmont and out into the ocean. With the very high tides, there was Glenn nowhere for the water to Burns go. We all saw the devastating flooding. It was the perfect storm.

Lanier Hurricane season Outlook ends at the end of this month and now our attentions are turning toward winter weather. A couple of weeks ago I met with GEMA, and its new Director, Jim Butterworth. On hand were representatives from the National Weather Service and its Meteorologist-in-Charge, Keith Stellman. We all know we have a strong El Nino. If it mimics the 1997-98 El Nino, we can expect below average temperatures and very much above average rainfall. Should the polar jet stream drop south, (and it will from time to time) we could be in store for some hefty snows, especially in the mountains. According to MIC Keith Stellman, ice is likely to be a major concern as well.

I have been looking at the various global models and other factors, looking for some trends and patterns. Based on what I have seen, I think winter will have a slow start. I would expect above average rainfall beginning in early- to mid-November. However, I also suspect temperatures may stay near average to above average through most of December. Then I can see a very active January, both in terms of severe storms and tornadoes to ice and snow.

Beyond that, I would expect February to be very cold. What I don’t relish is next

Water Control Manual undergoes public scrutiny

By Jane Harrison Lake Lanier lookouts, river watchdogs, and local officials are poring over hundreds of pages that propose how water from northeast Georgia will flow to meet environmental and human needs in three states.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its 1,000-plus page Water Control Manual and Environmental Impact Statement for its reservoirs on the ApalachicolaChattahoochee-Flint river system in late September and began a se-

ries of public hearings last month.

The plan offers about 10 different action plans that would govern Corps’ operations at Buford Dam, which forms Lake Lanier, the largest of five reservoirs that provide water to Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.

The highly technical draft is the Corps’ first complete water control proposal since 1958, when Lake Lanier filled up. Legal maneuvers between the three states warring over water and an appellate court ruling that Atlanta

may tap the flow delayed a final re-write of the manual. Corps engineers worked three years on the draft WCM and EIS currently under scrutiny.

Local officials and lake and river advocates wading into the documents prior to the first public hearing held Oct. 26 in Gainesville after the Lakeside deadline offered both guarded optimism and some disdain for proposals that could dictate lake levels, spell out drought contingency measures, and decide releases for human consumption, recreation, navigation and endurance of native species.

One Corps’ action plan of particular interest to Gainesville/Hall County is the inclusion of the proposed Glades Reservoir to provide a potential 40 million additional gallons of water daily for the north Georgia city/county. Although the Corps concedes the assumption about Glades being built is premature, it said it considered the project for analytical purposes. The Corps also stated that Glades’ inclusion as a preferred alternative does not constitute an agency decision on its merits. But, the mention of it as a favored option garnered praise and criticism.

Hall County Commissioner Scott Gibbs, in whose district the proposed 850-acre reservoir is planned, said he felt the draft WCM further validates the need for the county’s $130,000-plus investment. “It’s an extremely important alternative to take the burden off Lake Lanier and to provide water to Hall County,” he said.

Initiated in 2007, the Glades project would construct a reservoir about 12 miles northeast of Gainesville to store water pumped from the Chattahoochee River and natural stream flow from Flat Creek. Hall County has already spent about $16 million in engineering and consulting fees on the project which has been under Corps’ review since 2012. The

Corps expected to release its thrice delayed EIS on Glades Oct. 30, after which the public can weigh in during a 60 day comment period. The first public hearing is scheduled in Gainesville the week of Dec. 7.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Jason Ulseth said he thinks it odd the Corps put Glades into the mix. “At this point, it is not funded, not permitted and a long way from being built, if ever built,” he said. “It makes sense to look at that EIS first.” The mention of Glades was “the first thing that jumped out” said the Riverkeeper, adding he also had concerns with a couple of other issues he found while still digesting the documents.

“They are still relying on outdated population projections,” he said, pointing to recent Georgia predictions that the state’s population may not grow as much as previously predicted. Potentially fewer residents relying on the river system “changes the components about how to manage” its waters, he said. Ulseth also questioned a proposal to revise minimal seasonal flows from Buford Dam. Reducing flows from 750 cubic feet per second to 650 cfs during the winter could adversely impact water quality, recreation, and navigation, he said. Decreased flow would provide less water to dissolve downstream pollution and render recreation and navigation “difficult if not impossible,” he added.

The Lake Lanier Association, though not finished with a comprehensive report at press time, interpreted Corps management scenarios to mean potentially lower levels for Lanier. One management alternative shows Lanier below Initial Impact Level 22 percent of the time, compared with 17 percent of the time under the current plan. The Corps states that the Initial Impact Level of 1,066 feet results in “reduced swim areas, some recreational navigation hazards are marked, boat

ramps are minimally affected, a few private boat docks are affected.”

The Corps’ plans did not address one of LLA’s major goals, raising Lake Lanier’s full pool two feet to 1,073 feet. The draft document states that raising the full pool would reduce available flood storage and require storage for purposes other than flood management, which it says is not within the authorized scope of the project.

Clyde Morris, Gainesville attorney who works with LLA, said members are disappointed the Corps did not consider their major recommendation. “We continue to support raising full pool to 1073 and believe it is the best solution to the water supply issue … . We will continue to advocate our proposal going forward,” he said.

He said the organization is still evaluating inclusion of the Glades Reservoir in the Corps plans.

“While we believe raising Lanier’s full pool by two feet is the most cost-effective solution to Georgia’s water supply needs, we of course support measures to ensure adequate water supply for Hall County and Gainesville.

However, it is still unclear how and to what degree Glades might affect water levels in Lanier. Our concern is that Lanier’s levels might be negatively impacted, so we are continuing to evaluate that project,” he said by email.

Morris and Riverkeeper Ulseth were communicating with members of their respective organizations to encourage them to have their say during the public comment period ending Dec. 1.

“This is the first time in about half a century that the public has had an opportunity to weigh in on a project of this scope in the ACF, and we need to give the federal government carefully considered feedback,” Morris said. Ulseth said he was working up a “public comments package” for members to present.

Attorneys for both states were busy taking depositions from 45 non-expert witnesses to meet a Jan. 15, 2016 deadline. States have until April 1, 2016 to get testimony from expert witnesses.

oped shore across from the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. When that didn’t pan out, she learned the city of Gainesville wanted to put in a trail near the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center. So she set up a meeting with Parks & Recreation Director Michael Graham.

She said Graham listened to her ideas and later told her, “I think we have a place for you.” It wasn’t near the aquatic center.

Graham said the city had purchased 15 acres off Thompson Bridge Road and Springview Drive in 2002 for an extension of the Linwood Water Treatment Plant and acquired another 14 acres using Georgia Greenspace Funds allotted for minimally developed passive recreation. After Margaret came calling, the parks department and The Redbud Project formed a public-private partnership in 2011 to develop the Linwood Nature Preserve. The city bought an additional 2.5 acres on Linwood Drive from the Martin family estate in 2012. It would become the main entrance for trailhead parking.

A call to arms Margaret and Tom walked the land that had once been clear cut for dairy cows and dozed for power lines and public utilities.

They surveyed a surviving microcosm of Georgia’s natural areas: a creek endangered by silt and storm run-off flowed into a lake cove, hardwoods grew where a native forest once stood, wild grasses flourished in the sun.

And, exotic invasive plants threatened to choke out the indigenous species. They found precious

acres that clung to native roots in need of a community to protect and appreciate them.

Margaret donned garden gloves and wheelbarrows of research stored in her head and started asking people, “What are you doing about the environment?” She formed multitudes of conservation partners.

“So many people have volunteered, it’s amazing. This thing has been so powerful in terms of community people coming together,” she said. In a quivering voice she added, “It’s the most amazing project I’ve ever been involved with in my life.” Indeed, the redbud blossomed in the community’s heart.

“It’s hard to say ‘no’ to Margaret, she’s one sweet person. If she comes knocking she has a wonderful message,” said Bob Swoszowski, owner of about a dozen north Georgia McDonald’s restaurants, including the one at the corner of Linwood Drive and Thompson Bridge Road. He said he made up his mind to help after Margaret showed him the land right behind one of his stores.

He saw that it could be minimally developed as a preserve of raw nature for “people to enjoy the outdoors right in the middle of town.” He also wanted to help provide an educational opportunity for children to learn about Georgia’s native plants.

A network of local companies, organizations and a thousand volunteers joined to contribute more than $75,000 and 14,000 hours of labor. They donated and spread See Shore Lines, page 41

New holiday traditions: Let’s chat about Christmas Trees Before you know it, the holidays will be upon us. Once Thanksgiving arrives, our lives become a mad dash of parties, decorating, baking, family, friends and travel. Many of our holiday activities are the same, year after year, but why not try something a little different for 2015 and make some new memories.

Instead of heading to Black Friday and fighting the crowds at the malls, try a visit to North Georgia’s Christmas tree farms to pick out your fresh tree. Wander through evergreen-scented fields with planted varieties such as Carolina sapphire, blue spruce, white pine, Leyland cypress and Fraser fir to make the perfect selection. Some farms sell balledand-burlapped trees that can be planted in your yard after the holidays, or they’ll cut your tree right from the field. You can’t get much fresher than that.

And volunteers made a rain garden of native plants and rock to save the stream from torrent-riding sediment.

Preserve what God created About two weeks before the “vine cutting ceremony” to officially open the preserve last month, about 40 volunteers from Wrigley’s south Hall facility and local Master Gardeners pulled up and bagged invasive “nepal grass” and shoveled cement around paver stones.

Bruce Doll, one of the many trail stewards who’ll maintain the paths, picked up stray sticks and unearthed invasive intruders. The Appalachian Trail thru-hiker indicated the preserve fit his perspective.

“We’ve got to preserve what God has created. We’ve got to quit paving everything.”

“We’re halfway to Canaan … this will not be the stopping point,” Margaret vowed near the end of the work session.

She envisions school field trips, native plant seminars, and “how to” workshops on building rain gardens and installing landscapes that slow storm water run-off.

She described her passion for natural preservation as more of a panic.

“Hall County is imperiled. It’s right on the lake. It’s threatened in so many ways,” she said. She believes current and future “conservation partners” form the roots for economic prosperity and quality of life for years to come.

Dan Saknini: Living the fishing life on Lanier and beyond

By Pamela A. Keene Back in the day, Dan Saknini often drove to Lake Lanier from his home in Tucker just to fish.

Then he and his wife Pam bought a houseboat and their family spent weekends on the lake, boating, swimming and fishing, essentially falling in love with Lake Lanier. Eventually, they bought a weekend place on the south side of the lake. In 2010, the couple decided to make their weekend house their permanent home. “We count living on Lake Lanier one of life’s great blessings, being able to share the beauty and bounty of the lake with friends and family.”

He’s a go-getter kind of guy who started out flipping houses early in his career, eventually turning the business into new residential building. “When the economy dropped in 2008, new construction stopped,” he said, “so I channeled my energy back to flipping houses and also became a commercial real estate investor. But my passion has always been fishing.”

Saknini continued to fish every chance he had, joining the Lanier Striper Club. Soon he was tapped

branched out from striper fishing to angling for crappie. “I’m a multi-species fisherman,” he said.

Joanna Cloud, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association, and her husband Glenn are fellow club members.

Last winter, when Cloud was planning the association’s annual meeting, somehow the topic of a fish fry came up as a hook to bring more members to the event. After talking with club members, it was set; the club would provide fresh-caught crappie

for the annual meeting.

“We caught, cleaned, filleted and fried about 1,000 fish, providing enough fillets to feed 400 members and guests of the Lake Lanier Association,” he said. “The meal included home-made Martha White cornmeal hush-puppies also provided by the club, and all the trimmings. We had a great time.”

Saknini fishes as often as he can and he’s branched out to salt-water angling, recently joining the Atlanta Salt Water Club.

He regularly travels to Apalachicola, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Charleston on a quest for snapper, flounder, grouper and red fish.

He’s also got a recent distraction to keep him busy – twin year-old grandchildren, Addie and Tucker, who live in Nashville.

“We call them the teeny Saknini’s and they’re just awesome,” he said. “Grandchildren, they’ll change your life. I’m gone, hook, line and sinker. I can’t wait until they’re old enough to take them fishing.”

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

Cruise Lake Lanier this fall with Singleton Marine

By Pamela A. Keene Do you want to cruise Lake Lanier to see the leaf change?

Singleton Marine’s Fall Leaf Cruise, scheduled for Saturday, November 14, is just the ticket.

And, as the leaves change, it’s a good time to remind people to winterize their boats for the season.

Last year nearly 200 people on 40 or so boats gathered at Singleton’s Holiday Marina Sales Center for a cruise to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue and back. The company is expecting an even larger number this year.

“This is always a fun family event for boaters, and there’s always a T-shirt involved,” said Jeremy Ewers with Singleton. “The cruise is open to anyone with a boat, no matter what size. It’s a

chance to meet new boating friends and spend some time on the water. We’re hoping for good weather.”

Boaters are asked to arrive at Holiday Marina near Singleton’s location by 9 a.m. The 9:30 captains’ meeting with a safety briefing and staging the order of the boats. After the cruise to the Olympic Venue, boaters return to Holiday for a low-country boil after the cruise, catered by Twisted Oar. “We’re expecting even more people and boats this year, because everyone had a great time and they’re bringing their friends,” Ewers said.

Local anglers win big at Boating Atlanta’s Skeeter Bass Challenge

Just ask Paul Marks and David Nichol, local anglers who won $25,000 in October by fishing the 2015 Skeeter Bass Challenge, hosted by Boating Atlanta on Buford Highway.

The tournament trail began last February with the first of five qualifiers. More than 150 teams from across Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas participated in at least one of the preliminaries that took place at Lake Oconee, Lake Keowee, Lake Russell, Clark Hill and Lake Hartwell.

Winners at each qualifying event were guaranteed $3,000. The three-day finals were held on Lake Lanier at Little Mill Park in early October.

The championship field began with 75 teams on Friday and was

narrowed to the top 45 teams on Saturday. On Sunday, the top 16 teams netted their catch. They could weigh up to five fish for their totals.

The Marks/Nichol team came in with a total weight of 51.98 pounds. Second-place finishers John Peters and Randy Dover brought in 44.93 pounds, earning $3081 in prize money. Sam Harris and Chuck DeLorme came in third with 43.68 pounds and $2,065. Harris and DeLorme also took home the $5,000 bonus as the highest-finishing Skeeter powered by Yamaha.

The 2016 Skeeter Bass Challenge begins on February 7 at Lake Keowee. Finals will be held at Lake Hartwell.

Prescribed burns help protect the environment Once again this winter, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting prescribed burns on public lands around Lake Lanier. The Corps began the program on Lanier in the winter of 2011-2012 to reduce the risk of wildfires and ensure the health of the ecosystem.

Prescribed burns are controlled fires under specific environmental conditions with appropriate precautionary measures that confine the fire to a specific area. These fires are implemented by trained and experienced land management professionals under permits issued by the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Two prescribed fires are planned this winter: one in Gwinnett County near Buford Dam Park, and the other on an island in the lake. The exact dates have not been scheduled at this time.

Traveling the Straits of Florida to the ‘hidden’ country The beautiful island of Cuba is on the distant horizon, invisible from view, but is a mere 90 miles from the closest land in the USA, the “Southern Most Point” of Key West. As you visually scan over the sea from that location it appears it would not be much effort to cross over.

Looks can be deceiving in this case as the route you must take will pass through one of the most unique and challenging bodies of water you will ever encounter.

A “River in the Sea” as it is sometimes referred to, the Gulf Stream, is a powerful current that rapidly flows Northeast through the Straits of Florida. At times it can be a beautifully calm and serene place.

Other times it is just this side of a full blown, “peril at sea” disaster. Especially when tropical storms and hurricanes, are transiting or forming near its warm core.

There are even occasions when a clear blue sky appears extremely odd and contrast against a raging short swell, high, steep waves generated by winds coming from the northeast opposing the flow of the current. Depending on your departure point this can make a huge difference while underway and a more comfortable, safer ride as you plow through the waves when the seas are rough. Suddenly 90 miles be-

comes a much longer excursion than originally conceived and planned.

Not that the weather can be the only factor, add the sometimes heavy traffic of all types of vessels as they transit through the Straits bound for their destination.

You will almost certainly be faced with the need to interact with other vessels moving in all directions, speeds, and sizes. This is when knowledge of the navigation rules really pays off! This new port of call destination is going to be an interesting time for the Florida Straits when boaters from the USA begin the journey south from nearby places on the Gulf and Southeast Coast.

Make sure you are ready. Have the proper communication, charting capability, life jackets, and most of all, the complete ability to react in times of emergency and danger. The island is close in

distance, yet the path there is full of adventure and challenge as you cross the Straits of Florida.

Those of you that have USCG licenses and are considering going to Cuba with a small vessel should consider upgrading to Master, the next level from Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) and also include the STCW License called Basic Safety if you plan to carry passengers for hire.

There will soon be a rush of license applications for those mariners that want to professionally serve as Master or just improve their total safety knowledge in this realm for their private craft. Hidden treasures are found in Scottsboro, Ala. Coming from the Georgia side down through the misty clouds of early morning from the heights of the southern portion of Lookout Mountain, one gets glimpses of the sprawling Lake Guntersville and the old town of Scottsboro, Alabama. Though this little community is slightly off the beaten path, it has much to offer the traveling public.

Probably the most famous business in Scottsboro is the Unclaimed Baggage Center, which was begun in 1970 by Doyle Owens with a great idea, a borrowed pick-up truck and a $300 loan. He bought a load of unclaimed baggage that he sold on old card tables in a rented house with the help of his wife and two sons, thus becoming the only lost luggage store in the USA. By developing working relationships with airlines and other transportation companies ... and being featured in numerous newspaper and magazine stories, this center of unclaimed luggage began to draw curious visitors from all over the world! Doyle’s son Bryan bought the business from his dad in 1995 and has expanded it into a building that covers a city block. It is now one of the top tourist attractions in Alabama drawing annually more than a million lookers and buyers from all 50 states and 40 foreign

For the history buffs, the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center was opened in 1985 as both a historical and cultural museum exhibiting customs, traditions and art from the local area. It has three exhibit areas: The antebellum “Brown-Proctor House,” the pioneer village named “Sagetown,” and the “Little Courthouse.” The complete tour, however, takes visitors back 12,000 years to the first Indians who inhabited this part of Alabama. Visitors learn about various tribes that were in the area when the first explorers passed through all the way to the time when the first settlers arrived.

Design the artwork for new license card Do you think you have what it takes to have your artwork chosen for the next plastic hunting and fishing license card? If so, be sure to enter into your design for all the bragging rights!

The contest is open to anyone and the winning design will be produced on the Department of Natural Resources’ next plastic hunting and fishing card.

The card is available for $10 when you purchase or renew your Georgia hunting or fishing license. Currently the card features a whitetail deer on the front and largemouth bass on the back.

“Georgia wildlife is a charismatic subject for any artist,” said Dan Forster, Director, Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

“I encourage anyone with a passion for wildlife and artistic ability to enter this contest. What better honor than to have your design featured on our current hunting and fishing license plastic card?”

Artwork should depict some element of wildlife conservation in Georgia. Any

species that is featured should be native to Georgia and can include any wildlife that is legally hunted or fished in the state.

The artwork must meet the following qualifications: • The artwork may be prepared electronically, in acrylic, watercolor, or colored pencil.

• The original of the artwork must be unsigned.

• The artwork must be able to be scaled to fit the dimensions of a credit card (3.370 x 2.125 in) with rounded corners. It is extremely important to keep the space available for artwork in mind when designing the license card.
