By Pamela A. Keene For the 18th year, Lake Lanier Islands will host the Magical Nights of Lights animated light extravaganza featuring millions of twinkling lights and the Holiday Village, complete with shopping, pony rides and a visit from Santa.

The event begins on Saturday, November 20, and continues through Thursday, December 30, from 5 to 10 p.m.

The festive display is a sevenmile driving tour through the Islands past dozens of displays representing the holidays. Exhibits include The Twelve Days of Christmas, Santa’s Elves at Work, the North Pole Express, the Animated Sliding Penguin, Jack & The Beanstalk, Jet-Ski For Two, Icicle Tunnel and Candy Cane Lane.

Holiday Village includes a bonfire for roasting marshmallows, holiday fare, pony and amusement rides and holiday shopping.

The islands also hosts a Magical Nights of Lights Buffet nightly at Legacy Lodge and Conference Center. The cost is $27.95 per person.

Entry into Magical Nights of

Lights is $40 per car Monday thru Thursday; $60 per car Friday thru Sunday and holidays; $90 per passenger van and $250 per bus.

Car passes are also available online at www.lakelanierislands.com/mnol for $33 Monday through Thursday and $53 Friday through Sunday.

The resort is also offering most of the features at Magical Nights of Lights for one price.

All-inclusive packages include a vehicle pass for the light show, unlimited carnival rides, pony rides and more. They do not include food or beverage.

Fall brings many fishing opportunities on Lanier I’ve said it before and this month I’ll say it again: Don’t put away those fishing rods when the weather cools down. Autumn can be the best time of the year to spend some quality time catching fish on our north Georgia reservoirs. The water column has cooled considerably and gamefish that were pretty much restricted to the deeper depths during the warmer months are now roaming the entire water column which can make things pretty exciting.

Striped bass become especially active this time of year. These hard fighting gamefish thrive in cooler water which holds more dissolved oxygen. Linesides travel in schools and attack pods of baitfish in wolf pack fashion often driving them to the surface.

This provides an adrenaline bonanza to anglers casting into a churning mass of frenzied feeding. If the weather calls for clear skies, look for this activity early and late in the day. If overcast conditions are present, explosive activity can occur anytime. It pays to be ready. Creek mouth locations are prime areas to search.

Be mobile and don’t spend too much time in one area if there are no signs of life. Early in the

month topwater plugs such as the Redfin by Cotton Cordell can be very effective. Both the large seven-inch model and smaller jointed five-inch model will entice strikes. The top color pick year after year seems to be chrome and blue although there are a good many enthusiasts for the smokey joe color out there.

I’ve also caught fish very well off the chrome and black model.

Some say these plugs are even better when the chrome flakes away over time and exposes the pre-finish bone color of the original body. The family of Zara Spooks also present good choices when it comes to surfacing fish.

Don’t forget to remove factory treble hooks and replace them with premium super sharp models. This detail will turn slashes into solid hook ups. If you don’t see any signs of surface activity

search the area with live bait on flat lines. It can pay off to weight one line with a heavy split shot to probe an intermediate depth. If this line gets more than its share of strikes you’ll convert others to this mode.

Try the night bite for stripers Later in the month, it seems that topwaters become less effective and bucktail jigs along with soft plastics become more effective. Keep a rod ready with a 3/8th ounce bucktail jig and a trailer. All white or combinations of this color and silver mylar or a touch of other contrasting colors seem to work the best. Trailers can consist of ribbon tail or fluke style models. Both get a lot of strikes. Ribbon tail models provide a premium of swimming action while fluke styles lend a darting action to jigs. When it comes to trailers, white pearl or a contrasting chartreuse are most popular. Many of the newer paddle tail type swim baits are excellent candidates for savage strikes.

Cast bucktails paired with trailers into the action and retrieve with a slight hopping motion. If you’re tossing a swim bait, simply give it a steady retrieve. If there is no surface action, it never hurts to

blind cast. Adhering to this discipline can put many extra fish in your boat. Cover the water and experiment with depths from the surface down to about 15 feet or so. It’s a sound way to spend your time while drifting flat lines across an area. No mention of striper fishing this time of year would be complete without discussing the night bite. This is an awesome way to target linesides as they probe the shallows searching for prey during the darkness.

Being on the lake at night this time of year is quite pleasant and productive. Although others will work, the lure of choice is the Long A by Bomber. You’ll want the size 16X model which sports three sets of treble hooks. Super hot color picks include pink and silver flash, rainbow trout, and any of the chrome variations.

Launch your boat just before twilight and target main lake points and reefs, creek mouths, or island perimeters. Cast all the way up to the shoreline. Many explosive strikes will come in two or three feet of water. Removing a plug from the mouth of a powerful fish can be hazardous. Three accessories make night striper fishing a safer endeavor. The first is a

headlamp. Quality models are cheap these days and handy for all sorts of purposes. The second item is a lip gripping device. This will allow for safe handling while removing hooks with the third safety item which is nothing more than a set of needle nose pliers. If you’ve never tried for stripers at night, go with a seasoned fishing buddy the first time or two. It’s a great way to spend some time on the water.

Spotted and largemouth bass are spending more time roaming the shallows and they’re hungry.

Begin your search in the upper portions of your favorite creeks.

Baitfish are the key to success.

Look for the telltale signs of shad flickering and dimpling at the surface. When you find concentrations of forage, the bass will not be far away. A number of lures will draw strikes. One fine choice is a number five or seven Shad Rap. The natural shad color pattern is always a good pick. The light number five model fishes best on spinning tackle with sixpound test line. Continued from Page 4 plastics and small to medium size swim baits are other excellent picks. If the water surface is rippled by breeze, a 1/4th ounce spinnerbait can be a really good idea.

Choose one with double willow leaf style blades for maximum flash. Super shallow crankbaits that only dive to a foot or less can be excellent as well. Some pro anglers have claimed that these readily fool bass that have “seen too many spinnerbaits.” If you’re not getting a response to these faster moving baits, break out the shakey head plastic worm rig that you should nearly always have tied on. Work this through every piece of cover you can find.

If this does not produce results, it’s time for a move to deeper water. Start with the points near the old creek channel concentrating on the 15- to 25-foot depths. Probe these with your shakey head rig or a skirted twin tail grub which is also known as a spider jig. Chompers makes a good one that is loaded with garlic scent. Rig these grubs on football style lead heads.

The 3/8th ounce size is a good all around choice. Your choice of casting or spinning tackle paired with 10-pound test line will work well for these rigs. Don’t forget about schooling bass either. A lot of things can happen in November and this is one that can occur at any time. It pays to be ready. A 3/8th ounce white Rooster Tail casts like a bullet and does a great job at imitating a small baitfish fleeing the feed-

ing frenzy. Late in the month you might want to break out the jigging spoons. For starters, locate the trailing edge of submerged timber up tributary creeks and try bottom depths of 35 to 45 deep.

Tangle with the big boys at Duke’s Creek If you’re looking for a change of pace, try one of the year around trout streams or check the excellent opportunities in our delayed harvest trout waters. The latter especially provides a high quality of fishing from November 1st to May 14th. As the name implies, all trout caught in these waters must be immediately released. The fall is a super time to plan a trip to a DH stream in your neck of the woods. Nothing beats an Indian summer day on a trout stream in the north Georgia mountains, especially when it’s full of fish!

If you want to hang out a little closer to the ATL, you might be surprised to learn that the stretch of Chattahoochee River from Morgan Falls to Peachtree Creek is an exceptional delayed harvest stream.

While you’re close to the hustle and bustle it seems as if you’ve entered a different world. Others on the menu include Smith Creek in Unicoi State Park just outside of Helen, a stretch of the Toccoa River (reputed to be the best in the state) below Lake Blue Ridge, the Chatooga River in Rabun County (also reputed to be the best See Fishing, page 12

Typical for this time of year, it seems that a little bit of everything has been working lately. Fish are being caught from shallow to deep water. In the shallows, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerk baits are all working. Whatever you choose, stick to the smaller sizes in natural baitfish patterns. Target any cover you see casting well beyond objects to avoid spooking shallow fish. If you’re casting to the secondary points in the upper tributaries some breeze can help the bite. Bass are also being caught a bit deeper on drop shot and shakey head rigs. In the deeper water focus on points with man made brush piles. Did I mention that some nice fish have been caught on topwater plugs recently? The moral of the story is there’s a lot going on out there right now. Stay versatile and be prepared to try the full spectrum of basic Lanier patterns.

Striper fishing has been good. The topwater bite has been a mainstay for most anglers. The productive times have generally been early and late with overcast weather providing action on and off throughout the day. Look for these fish near the creek mouths on both the upper and lower ends of the lake. Toss bucktail jigs with trailers, swim baits, or fluke style plastics to fool these fish. Flat lines baited with live herring have been putting fish in the boat as well. Trail two of these about 100 feet behind the boat as you search for the topwater action. Don’t stay in any one place long if you’re not seeing any signs of life. If you’re not on anything and need to cover water, you may want to try trolling one ounce bucktail jigs behind eight colors of lead core line. This is a great way to locate fish on a slow day. This is still working for some anglers. Toward the end of the month, keep an eye out for arriving flocks of seagulls to point out striper activity.

Be cautious on the lake during the fall boating season The coming months can be a great time to take the family and friends out for a day of recreational boating, picnicking, leaf viewing and generally having a great time. Air temperatures are just right and water temps are still in the safe range. While recreational boating slows during December, fishermen and some boaters with heated cabins will still find their way out on the water for a day of relaxation and fun. Boating accident statistics give us a warning, however, about boating during October, November and December. I have access to U.S. Coast Guard boating accident statistics for 2009, and they give us reason to be concerned.

Trauma, drowning and hypothermia continue to rank one, two and three as causes of death.

The highest percentage of accidents resulting in death occurred in October (25 percent), November (22 percent) and December (26 percent). The other nine months ranged from 11 percent to 27 percent (February).

Hypothermia is not “freezing to death,”, nor is it “frostbite,” and it can kill at temperatures well above freezing. To give you

an idea of how much time you have if you fall overboard when the water temperature drops, consider this: water temperature 5060 degrees, unconsciousness can occur in one to two hours; death one to six hours. If water temperature is 40-50 degrees, unconsciousness can occur in 30-60 minutes, death one to three hours.

If you plan to be on the water this fall and winter, there are things you can do to prevent hypothermia.

• Try to avoid boating alone.

It’s nice to have help in emergencies.

• Avoid situations that promote loss of body heat. Stay dry and out of the cold wind.

• Wear your life jacket. It will help preserve body heat, and in the event you fall overboard you will be better able to return to the

boat.

• Proper clothing makes a big difference. Wool clothing is much better than synthetics.

Remember, too, that there will probably not be many other boaters around you during this time of the year, meaning “Good Samaritans” will be scarce.

Should you find yourself in the position of rescuing someone who possibly is suffering from hypothermia, keep this in mind: their energy resources are minimal. Have them do as little as possible to help you in their rescue. They may deplete what energy reserves they have left.

Hypothermic people have died after rescue because of their exertion during the rescue.

Fall boating can be a wonderful experience, but one needs to exercise caution since the rules have changed some from summer boating. To learn more about cold weather boating and other important facets of recreational boating, consider taking our one-day “About Boating Safety” course being offered at Lake Lanier from February through October each year. Announcements of our courses are printed in this news-

paper and in other lake area newspapers during those months.

Lanier Striper Club Hosts ‘Get Kids Fishing’ tournament November 13

By Pamela A. Keene On November 13, the Lanier Striper Club will host “Get Kids Fishing” tournament, funded in part by money raised from the organization’s September Fun Fest Striper Tournament.

The November event is limited to 50 boats and teams are encouraged to bring youngsters out to fish.

“There’s a special entry free for fishing teams that include a child aged 6 to 14,” said Joe Kuhr

with Lanier Striper Club.

“We’re all about getting youngsters to enjoy fishing from an early age and this tournament is part of the Get Kids Fishing Foundation.”

Registration is $100 per team but only $65 per team with at least one child participating.

Participants will receive two tournament T-shirts, a gift bag and two tickets to the luncheon awards ceremony. Winners will receive cash, prizes and trophies.

The event is a catch-photo-release virtual tournament.

All pre- and post-tournament activities will take place at Port

Royale Marina.

The Lanier Striper Club was formed in 2000. Its 50-plus members are dedicated to promoting fellowship, conservation and education among Lake Sidney Lanier Striped Bass Anglers. The club meets the first Tuesday of every month at The Dam Store on Buford Dam Road and has a monthly fishing outing the first Saturday of the month (following the Tuesday meeting).

Buford Dam Road reopens ahead of schedule

By Pamela A. Keene Buford Dam Road reopened on Friday, October 22, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

It had been closed for paving; the paving project was completed early, in part due to the complete

closure of the road.

“Because the road was closed to traffic, the paving project was completed ahead of the November 4 reopening date,” said Chris Lovelady, assistant project operations manager for Lake Lanier.

“We wish to thank those commuters that utilized the detours around Buford Dam Road and both Gwinnett and Forsyth counties for their patience as we repaved the roads.”

Pickens lures regattas, youth to Olympic venue

By Jane Harrison When Jim Pickens took the helm of the Lake Lanier Rowing Club two years ago as a part-time job, he had big dreams for the venue that hosted 1996 Olympic rowing events.

Since then the 26Pickens year-old former collegiate rower has infused more life into the rowing side of the venue in more than a decade.

His labors to snare three high profile regattas, grow a junior rowing program and stage innovative events like the Lanier Night Sprints Regatta have brought rowing back to life at a venue formerly dominated by canoe/kayak paddlers.

“I expected to work hard,” Pickens said during a morning break in the boathouse basement recently. With racing shells resting in their slings and Lake Lanier lapping at the weathered

docks outside the open port, Pickens pulled up a chair to answer a reporter’s questions about recent and upcoming activities he has sunk his oars into. His right-hand man, Nathan Mahan, sat nearby.

When he came to LLRC after a chance meeting with club members through his previous work with a rowing equipment company, Pickens generated excitement among the predominately masters-aged group. “It’s like we’ve been re-born,” veteran rower Henry Kannapell said a couple of months after Pickens accepted the part-time position.

Since then, the University of Mary Washington alumnus has been appointed full-time executive director and head coach.

But, in reality, his work extends far beyond his dual title, as was evidenced at the inaugural Lanier Night Sprints in September when Pickens seemed virtually amphibious. He circulated on the water, off the water and high above the water in the finish

tower serving as chief course installer, coach, regatta director, course monitor, and announcer.

His regular work routine consists of networking with collegiate coaches to secure regatta bids and bring collegiate crews to train on Lanier, leading junior and masters practices, organizing club events like the Learn to Row sessions, the winter ergatta, and spring head races, and maintaining general equipment upkeep at the boathouse. “I’ve been told we’re doing more stuff than the club’s ever been doing,” Pickens said. “When we get this many events here, volunteer hours get stretched thin,” causing him to carry much of the load. “We’ll make it through it,” he said.

Collegiate regattas head to Lanier In his first media interview after becoming LLRC coach, Pickens said one of his goals was to “get the venue back on the world stage.” At that time, the Lanier Olympic Venue had not played host to a high profile rowing regatta in more than two years and had been abandoned as the site of the biggest regatta in the South, the Head of the Chattahoochee. The course, known as one of the best natural sites for competitive flatwater racing, was being displaced in the rowing world by new venues in Chattanooga and Oklahoma City, where water sport communities and tourist amenities abound.

Pickens wanted to get Lake Lanier back onto the forefront.

“One thing the club is here for is to bring events back to the area.

This is something we should be doing. To have the best venue and not be using it for this purpose would be silly and wasteful,” he said.

Through his connections with collegiate coaches, Pickens was able to secure two high profile regattas in spring 2011 and one in 2013. The American Collegiate Rowing Association will have its national regatta on Lanier on May 28 and 29, followed by the Southeast Junior Rowing Regional Championships in June. In 2013, the NCAA Women’s Championships are coming to Lake Lanier. “I don’t think people realize the gravity of this, except for NCAA, which they recognize because of football,” Pickens said.

4,000 athletes and fans to the area. Pickens said the Southeast Junior Regional Championship will attract about 5,000 people per day. “There are more spectators and visitors than at other events when kids, not college kids, are involved,” he said.

The regatta site selection had more to do with coaches’ connections with Pickens and the venue than with a formal bid submission, Pickens said. “The biggest thing was getting spring break traffic back here,” he said.

Coaches who brought junior and collegiate crews to train on Lanier during winter and spring breaks experienced the venue and the area first hand. Their positive impressions, plus their networking

with Pickens, created the impetus for holding national and regional regattas here.

Pickens said that after 30 mile per hour winds caused a shut down of the 2010 ACRA national regatta at Oklahoma City, the Lanier venue looked like a haven.

Although Oklahoma City put tens of millions of dollars into building a great boating community, there’s nothing they can do to abate winds that swoop down on the water during spring and fall, Pickens noted. “Here on Lanier we can focus on events,” he said, because the setting is close to perfect for flatwater racing. Continued from Page 18 Lanier is a straight shot shielded by mostly wooded slopes. The entire Olympic venue area, from the cove in front of the boathouse, across Clarks Bridge, and racing course is designated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a no wake zone.

The Chattahoochee channel may be ideal for racing, but Pickens said other manmade components are not. Docks with decaying wood and dwindling floats would be better off replaced than repaired, he said. “There are some things that need to be done before spring,” he added, including improvements to the course that would ease buoy installation.

Replacing docks would be a “massive project,” Pickens said, “and not something that two clubs can afford to do.” He plans to appeal to the city and county for funds to replace the docks. “I wouldn’t mess with repair when replacement needs to be done,” he said.

Pickens feels he has solid regatta support from his crew of veteran rowers. Hosting the upcoming regattas will require each of the club’s 80-90 masters rowers, plus its 35-member junior

Junior program growth Another goal Pickens articulated as a new coach was to grow a junior program in the club whose members’ median age is well over 40. He and Mahan began visiting schools last year to expose students to rowing and invite them to come out to try it.

Currently, students have enrolled from Mill Creek, North Hall, North Gwinnett, DaVinci Academy, Gainesville High School, Flowery Branch, Riverside Military Academy and Dacula. They practice from 4-6 p.m. five days a week building strength and endurance with land training, learning technique on ergometers, and trying out their oars on the water.

At a recent practice, Pickens led the group in circuit training exercises outside the boathouse.

“What matters today is that you all keep moving,” he told the dozen teens who endured a full hour of walking lunges, squatting, pushing tractor tires, and holding full body planks, interspersed with running about 400 meters after each circuit of exercises.

They apparently like it, be-

cause they keep coming back, Pickens joked. He shares coaching duties with Mahan, who also helps with the masters’ practices.

Pickens said the junior program, the largest the club has had, started with a core group of about five last year. “You’ve got to develop that core group first … then they bring their friends and others in.”

Heading for the ’Hooch and upcoming events Pickens plans to take 26 juniors and 14 masters to race at Head of the Chattahoochee Nov. 6 and 7 in Chattanooga. He expects the juniors to compete “very well” in the novice category. Girls will race in eight and four boats; boys will compete in four and quad events. Masters rowers will be sculling and sweeping, “doing a little bit of everything,” Pickens said. “I think they will do fairly well … a lot have prepared very well for the race.” The Head of the Hooch, as it is known, draws about 5,000 rowers to the Chattanooga riverfront and is known as the largest regatta in the South.

Specialty: K1 1000 meters. He feels his stroke is strongest about midway through a 1,000 meter race. “At middle ground, I feel I can get powerful strokes, keep up and finish strong,” he said.

Accomplishments: Fifth place in K 1000 meters in 2009 USA Canoe Kayak National Championships; second in the same event at the recent regatta at Lake Placid.

Goals: “Until now, my main goal was to make it up to the High Performance Team. Now I’d like to get 4:55 in the 1,000. That would be awesome.” He said it would take “a lot of determination” in morning and afternoon practices, weight-lifting, and technique sharpening to drop 15 seconds from his current 5:10 1,000 meter time. “Probably by mid-February I’ll get it,” he said.

Here’s a big fish story that’s true and other tales We have all heard those whopping big fish stories and many are just that ... stories. Here’s one that is true. Ralph Wilkins of New York spent two days waiting on the docks of a Chatham, Mass. marina. His FV Odysea, a 32’ BHM sportfishing boat rigged for giant tuna, was waiting for him to go catch the big one. The fiberglass hull with two-story wheel house was ready for offshore action. This was probably his 12th trip of the season. When his mate didn’t show he decided to go it alone and cast off for a 40-mile offshore trip.

Tuna fishermen often search for pods of whales to locate Bluefin. Whales and tuna track schools of mackerel, herring and other small fish up and down the coast. He decided to troll two lines and got a hit. The 70 incher he reeled in was about 200 pounds but it didn’t meet the size requirement specified on his permit. Because the fish is on the endangered list, the National Marine Fisheries Service stipulated that each vessel can harvest only one trophy or Giant Blue Fin Tuna annually. Giants begin their classification at 73 inches and around 220 pounds. At their upper limits they surpass 14 feet. The I.G.F.A. record caught off of Nova Scotia in 1979 is 1,496 pounds. That’s a lot of fish.

About two and a half hours later he hooked another one and thought it was a schoolie or immature Bluefin. He got the fish close enough to see that it was 10-12 feet long, and realized he was in for a battle. He set the drag tighter and the fish still took off hundreds of feet of line in seconds. Use caution on roadways: Deer are on the move With an estimated 50,000 deer-car collisions annually in this state, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division advises motorists across the state to be extra cautious of increased deer and wildlife sightings this fall season.

Increased deer sightings occur for a number of reasons – increased populations, habitat fragmentation and mating season.

“Fall is the breeding season for deer and they are more prevalent in their movements,” said Don McGowan, Wildlife Resources Division biologist. “Some Georgia motorists may only expect

deer to cross rural roadways, while in fact urban and suburban roads are also prime areas for deer-car collisions. Hunting is oftentimes mistakenly blamed for increased deer-car collisions in autumn when, in reality, deer are on the move due to a series of both natural and human causes.”

One such cause is mating season. Deer mating season occurs between October and early December.

Increased human population and rural development also lend to increased deer sightings.

Additionally as the days become shorter and nights become

longer, rush hour for most commuters tends to fall during the same hours in which white-tailed deer are most active – at dawn and dusk.

“Remember that deer are wildlife and as such are unpredictable,” McGowan says. “If you see one deer, there are probably more nearby so slow down.”

New solar power development Several years ago affordable solar powered battery chargers were offered to the marine and other recreation industries. Now West Marine offers solar panels for boats. People are now asking what will come next. Well, textile manufacturer Dickson has developed a solar (photovoltaic) feature that’s now built into marine Sunbrella plus fabrics. This would allow your Bimini or Sundodger top to produce up to 100 watts of electricity sent straight to your vessel’s battery bank.

The first solar Bimini top was introduced at the Cannes Boat and Yacht Show last September. I think solar power will become a large part of the marine industry.

First, boats have a larger area to install panels and Bimini tops.

Second, improvements in batteries make them more economical.

They have developed batteries that are lighter, smaller and will last longer. Already there are solar powered boats on the market. True, they won’t pull a water-

skier or travel a great distance, but the marine and auto industries are working on improvements every year. I’ll bet by 2014 we won’t believe what will be available.

Changes in boating industry Triton Boats founder Earl Bentz recently commented on what’s been happening since the entire marine industry is down 60 percent over the past few years. It seems that Platinum Equity recently purchased Triton Boats from Brunswick Corp. (Mercury outboards and I/Os). This was not Platinum’s first purchase. It adds Triton to Ranger, Stratos and Champion boats which Platinum purchased from Genmar Holdings.

Each brand of boat will have its own special features when the new models hit the show room.

This is assured because each brand will have its own engineering and design department. Platinum says that the combined brands of boats will control more than 50 percent of the bass fishing boats built in the U.S. The boating industry is changing. A lot of boat builders will be no more. So if you are considering buying a new boat check carefully that the boat you buy will still be in production and can honor their warranty. Also be careful of buying a used boat at a bargain price. Chances are a bargain boat also has not had the proper maintenance, and is not a bargain, but a wallet drainer.

Association continues involvement in Tri-State Water Wars A significant part of the Lake Lanier Association’s focus continues to be on the Tri-State Water Wars and work to get resolution on the issues of water management and water allocation among Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

In July 2009, Judge Paul Magnusson, a U.S. District Court judge, ruled that the three states must resolve their differences within three years or the Atlanta area would have to revert to mid1970s water supply withdrawal levels. As the deadline approaches and all three states are facing elections that will see new governors in place, the clock is ticking loudly.

The association’s unique role There are several distinguishing items of note regarding the association’s continued involvement in this 20-year situation: • LLA is the only entity involved in the Tri-State litigation that is not a government entity or a power company.

• LLA is also the only party in the litigation whose goal is to protect the lake’s recreation-based economy by maintaining Lanier’s water level in the face of increasing downstream demands in Florida and Alabama.

Lake Lanier Association News & Information

As a non-profit volunteerbased organization with limited funding, the association’s board did not enter lightly into this protracted litigation that began 20 years ago. But the board saw an urgent need to take action in representing the interests of people and businesses whose lives and livelihoods depend on Lanier. Because the issues are so complex and far-reaching, the board realized that issues surrounding the lake would need to be addressed within the legal system before there could be an ultimate resolution among all parties. The association is committed to maintaining its place at the table as the issues in this case are negotiated, keeping Lanier at the forefront of the discussions that also involve the whole of the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river basin.

Other factors in play In conjunction with the TriState litigation effort, the LLA is working to promote both water conservation measures in metro Atlanta and options for increased water storage capacity within the lake. One of the association’s proposals is to raise the summer pool level of Lake Lanier two feet,

from 1071 to 1073 feet above sea level. Any additional storage capacity within Lanier would require some level of new investment. But this move alone would significantly increase the storage capacity of the lake at far lower cost than building additional reservoirs.

In the coming months, you

will be hearing more about the Tri-State Water Wars. The association urges the public to speak out and to become engaged in this very important issue.

Collegiate crews are already committing to hit the water on Lanier with winter training in January. The University of Virginia, George Mason University and an Ontario, Canada college squad will come to Gainesville for winter conditioning. Spring break crews will begin flocking to Lanier in February. About

750 athletes trained at the Lanier Olympic Venue last winter and spring. Pickens hopes to attract more than 1,000 in 2011.

During the first full weekend of spring, collegiate, junior, and masters rowers will converge at the Lanier Olympic Venue for the John Hunter and Lanier Sprints regattas. Pickens revived the double regatta weekend after the drought had dried it up for a couple of years. More than 2,500 rowers participated in the regattas in 2010. Twenty-nine teams competed in the John Hunter junior and collegiate regatta for the largest turn-out in the 24-year history of the event.

Pickens mulled over the fact

that at a time when LLRC is putting on more events than it ever has, the venue may not shine as it could in the spotlight. “Fourteen years after the Olympics, the venue is at its worst, not its best. It is in need of help,” he said. The Lanier Olympic Venue’s future on the national and international stage depends on “how well we treat (regatta guests) and how good a position the facility is in to host events,” Pickens said. In the meantime, he’s trying to book more regattas, get more kids on the water, and come up with ways to make the most of the venue that brought the world to Lake Lanier in 1996.

Maritime Foundation hosts 5th Annual Parade of Lights

Organizers add Taste of Lake at Aqualand to event

By Pamela A. Keene The tradition continues. For the fifth year, the UYC Maritime Foundation is hosting its Boat Parade of Lights on Lake Lanier on Saturday, December 4. The parade will begin marshaling at 5:30 p.m. with several viewing areas around the lake.

The festivities begin at Aqualand Marina around 6 p.m., with musical entertainment and events for children. The Taste of the Lake will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. with area restaurants offering samples of their cuisine. The awards ceremony will follow at 9 p.m.

“This year we’ve decided to pull out the stops for a big celebration,” said Pam Eastman, one of the parade/event organizers.

“We anticipate close to 50 boats, from pontoon boats to sailboats, and will have a spectacular show on the water.”

Viewing of the parade will be available

Scenes from a previous boat parade. at Old Federal Park and at Van Pugh Park, as well as from Aqualand.

Registration is available at www.LanierParadeofLights.org and costs $25 per boat. Registration includes participation in the boat parade, one Taste of the Lake ticket, a T-shirt and a Lake Lanier Chart Book.

Admission to the party is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children age 10 and under are admitted free. Donations benefit the UYC Maritime Foundation to sponsor scholarships for collegiate academics.

Senior paddlers progress toward 2012 Olympic Games qualifying

By Jane Harrison With the 2012 Olympic Games less than two years away, the first waves of competition for Olympic qualifying are hitting the water in sprint canoe/kayak. Eight senior athletes affiliated with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club have a shot at going to London in 2012 as a result of their finishes in the Oct.7-10 Pan American Championships or other international championships earlier this year.

But, they have their work cut out for them in the coming year.

Morgan House, Emily Vinson, Tim Hornsby, Emily Mickle, Nicole Mallory, Ben Hefner, Robert Finlayson, and Alejandro Sweldhelm have a chance to be selected for the U.S. Olympic team based on performances this year.

House, Hornsby, Mickle, Mallory, Hefner and Finlayson were among LCKC athletes who competed in senior events at the Pan American Championships in Mexico City. According to USA Canoe/Kayak, the Pan American Championships serve as a qualifier for the 2011 Pan American Games, which is the first step in qualifying boats for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Athletes who finished in at least fifth place qualify to race in next year’s Pan American Championships, which is expected to be one of the final qualifying events for the U.S. Olympic Team, said LCKC Coach Claudiu Ciur. He said that those finishing from sixth to eighth place may get an invitation to participate, based on their showing throughout the year.

Prior to the 2011 Pan American Championships, again in Mexico City, athletes will have several other opportunities to make the team, according to USACK National Teams Director William Irving.

“Key events will be the 2011 World Championships and first Olympic qualifying event, 2011 Olympic Test event, 2011 Pan Am Games and last chance Olympic qualifier,” Irving said in an emailed response to a reporter’s questions.

In the Pan American Championships, House, paddling with Patrick Dolan from Hawaii, grabbed fifth place in Senior House

Men’s K2 1,000 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 30 seconds, about 11 seconds behind the first place pair from Cuba. LCKC Olympic Legacy athlete Hornsby and boat mates House, Dolan, and Ryan Stock came in seventh in Senior Men’s K4 at 3:12, behind winner, Cuba, at 2:59. Hornsby and Ryan Dolan, Hawaii, placed sixth in the K2 200 in 33:19, barely two seconds behind the first place Canadian duo.

Mickle and Mallory took two fifth place finishes in team boat competition. The pair raced for a 41.5 time in the K2 200 Senior Women’s event and shared a boat with two other USACK women for a 1:47 finish in the K4 500.

Hefner, who also raced in the Pan American junior races, came in eighth place in the C1 Senior Men 1,000 with a 4:38.16. Cuba won the event in 4:05. Hefner also Hefner placed eighth in the Senior Men 500 at 2:21.91, behind winner, Cuba, at 1:51.

Finlayson came in eighth place in a boat with Ian Ross in the Senior Mens C2 1,000 at 4:21.30,

behind winner, Mexico, with a 3:46. In the Mens C1 200, Finlayson got ninth place in 44.22, about five seconds behind the leader, Brazil.

Vinson and Sweldhelm, who did not race in Mexico City, still have opportunities to make the U.S. team based past and upcoming per- Vinson formances.

The Pan American Championships offered “some really good competition with a lot of fast athletes from South America,” said LCKC Coach Ciur. He said that at this point, LCKC athletes have about a 25 percent chance of making the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. “We need a good showing next year in the trials, World Cup, World Championships and Pan American Championships,” he said. “Next year is going to be very busy with a lot of events.”

National Teams Director Irving offered further comments about LCKC athletes. “We are hopeful that Tim Hornsby, Morgan House and Emily Vinson are all showing progress toward qual-

ifying kayaks for the Olympics which is the first step in making the Olympic Team,” he said. “If the canoes have a good year next year, then there is a potential that Ben Heffner will qualify himself to the team. The way that he has been progressing in the sport the past few years has shown that he is on the right track if he continues to work hard with his coach, Claudiu Ciur.”

He added that he expects House will be a team boat leader.

“Morgan competed very well at the Pan Am Championships, but it was a very long season for the team this year and they came into the event exhausted after competing at their biggest event of the year, the 2010 Sprint World Championships,” he said.

“I expect for Morgan to lead our K-2 and K4 1000 meter boats into this next year and hopefully qualifying both. If they do well in 2011 and qualify the boats then the opportunity to do well the following year is even greater. Having Guy Wilding (former LCKC Coach) as the new National Team Coach has set Morgan’s goals on the long term goal of the 2012 Olympics, so the results in 2010 See Paddlers, page 29

As color fades chance of strong storms increase November has arrived and the last of the fall color is disappearing from the landscape. Mornings temperatures at or below freezing will now become more common and the upcoming holidays are on everyone’s mind. Things are getting very festive.

However, here in Severe Weather Center 2, November means one thing. Our fall severe storm season has arrived. We all know how bad the storms can be in the springtime. However, late fall can also be a month for wicked weather, and even tornadoes.

The weather wars during the spring begin with warm air pushing northward from the Gulf of Mexico, then colliding with cold air coming down from the north. A tremendous amount of wind shear and energy is thrown into the mix by the jet stream barreling out of the north into the Deep South. The jet stream is extremely strong in spring. During the summer months, the jet stream can be found meandering along the U.S. and Canadian border.

In the late fall, warm air begins retreating and cold fronts become stronger and stronger. The jet now begins to dive to the south once again, getting stronger due to the differences of the temperature on the north and south sides of this river of strong wind.

In the late fall, it does not take as much atmospheric energy to generate severe storms and tornadoes. As a result, tornado winds are a little weaker but still strong enough to cause major damage.

As cold fronts become stronger and

stronger this month, we frequently find squall lines just ahead of the Glenn front. When we detect Burns these organized thunderstorms moving our way, Lanier we have to pay close atOutlook tention to their structures. Many times in November, we detect these storms “bowing out.” On radar, we can readily identify these so-called “bow echoes” because they actually look like a bow. The reason they take on the bow structure is wind. Strong winds of 60-80 miles per hour are very common in a bow echo and can and do, as much damage as a weak tornado. Fortunately, we have the technology to forecast squall lines, bow echoes, and possible tornadoes. We also have the ability to track these systems with unprecedented accuracy.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has had a very quiet October. So have we here in the Weather Center. As hurricane season ends on the last day of this month, we will now gear up for Severe Storm Season, Part ll.

I hate to end on that note so just let me end with something a little more positive. If the La Nina ocean cooling continues, our spring severe storm season could be much less than in an El Nino or neutral year.

A different perspective on boating opportunities Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. We used to head up to the lake most every weekend to enjoy gunk-holing or just relaxing with our friends at the dock. Until recently I thought every boater had the same opportunity. I never thought of it as though we were being spoiled, but now I know differently.

I have just returned from up north making my way along the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and the Erie Canal. There is some beautiful country up there – lots of water, boats and fishing too. My first thought was that it would be a great place to retire, but then on Labor Day night I had a dose of reality. The temperature dropped into the mid 40s, and the next morning all the talk at the local diner related to when and

how everyone planned to store their boat for the winter.

As for what I meant about being spoiled, the boating season in this part of the country is only about six or seven weeks long.

Along the St. Lawrence everyone has a boat house with a lift, and the larger power boats move in-doors to a heated warehouse type facility. All of them must be winterized at a considerable expense to the owner. Most of the boathouses along the waterways are traditional in outward appearance, but once inside some of them, it’s like a “man-cave” with such amenities as a 52-inch HDTV, a fireplace, a kitchen, comfortable lounge chairs and in some, even a bar.

For many owners, just being around their boat is enough. But

they do have the luxury of working on their boat while it is out of the water and simultaneously watching their favorite team on television. The closest I had come to this sort of arrangement was watching the Super Bowl at the clubhouse at Sunrise Cove, so I must admit I was a little jealous.

During the summer months the lakes and canals offer a variety of boating opportunities. Fishing is very big. There are a lot of resorts and campground that provide accommodations and dining to those visiting by water and the scenery is spectacular. There are a variety of Boat Charter Tours providing non-boaters the luxury of sightseeing, and there are several ferries to shuttle visitors back and forth or take them on scenic tours between the US and Canada.

The canals are scenic as well, with smaller bodies of water.

Each provides the crew an opportunity to test their skills at “locking through” as they move along the canal. The locks are quite different and for the novice they can present somewhat of a challenge.

land, passing farmland pastures or granite cliff sides along the way.

Boaters can tie up alongside the canal walls in most villages to shop and grab a meal or just see the sights. Some villages provide free overnight dockage and utilities, to the chagrin of the area marinas. One marina owner com-

mented to me, “The city taxes us to death, and then they take our business away from us.”

One might ask, “Who’s the most spoiled?” or “Who has it best?” Being a boater I would have to say that we all are, and though it seems we throw a lot of See Wilsons, page 29

In looking back over the 20 or more years we have been on the water, thinking about all the boats we have owned, and where we did our boating, I will have to admit that some of the best times we ever spent on the water were at Lake Lanier. But if you get the chance to visit the lakes or rivers of New York you

will want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Now, for everyone that continues to ask, we have an update on the saga of the seemingly lost tobacco package.

It seems the Bahamian Post Office decided to contract with another airline for shipping packages from Nassau to Miami. After nine months of negotiating, Air Jamaica won the contract with the Bahamian Postal Authority and as a result my five-pound package was turned over to them for delivery.

The package was shipped

from Nassau to Jamaica, and then flown to New Jersey where it was turned over to US Customs, who in turn delivered it to the US Post Office in Newark.

On October 7th, some 10 months after I requested the package be sent “Return to Sender” the package arrived in Vero Beach, FL. The store phoned to ask if I wanted them to mail it to me. I could hardly contain myself, and just politely said “No, I’ll stop by and pick it up.”

New restaurant opens this month in Flowery Branch

By Pamela A. Keene There’s a new restaurant opening in mid-November in downtown Flowery Branch. Toasted and Tapped Brewery and Restaurant is coming into the former location of Major McGill’s.

Owner Paul Coggins has set up a micro-brewery in the completely renovated space, adding bars and seating for 90. The restaurant will serve between six and eight custom-hand-crafted beers along with another dozen or so brews. “We’ll be brewing on site and people can watch the process through glass-paneled doors,” said the graduate of California Davis University, known for its wine and beer programs.

“We’re brewing in small batches and will have our beers on draft.”

He has hired Flowery Branch resident Jaime Callaway as chef.

The restaurant’s menu includes sausage-stuffed mushrooms, hunter’s minestrone soup, an Italian sandwich, a fish-and-chips sandwich, beer-braised pot roast and barbecued shrimp and grits.

Coggins plans to offer the same menu at lunch and dinner, with chalk-board specials – a couple

each evening – at dinner time.

Coggins said he has been looking for a free-standing building to open a restaurant and found that Major McGill’s fit the bill.

“We’ve completely reconfigured the inside, so it doesn’t even look like the old restaurant,” he said. “I knew when I saw it that it was the right location for my business.”

The beers he’s crafting will be in various styles, including British, German, Belgian and American. They will be brewed in 15.5-gallon kegs and served on draft. The types of beers will vary.

“We hope to have a full bar after the first of the year, but we’re opening with beer and wine,” he said. “We’ll be featuring food and beer pairings, along with a four-beer sampler flights.”

Toasted and Tapped is slated to open on November 18. It will be open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner; Sunday brunch will be served from late morning until mid-afternoon.

Lanier area remains positive market for commercial real estate

By Pamela A. Keene There’s positive news on the commercial real estate front for Gainesville and Lake Lanier. Retailers are realizing that the area is a shopping mecca for the whole of Northeast Georgia, with big box retailers like Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond.

“Over the past six months there’s been a flurry of activity in this area,” said Tim Knight, coowner of Trivest Real Estate.

“Nationally, the trend in commercial real estate is down with very little going on, but not so in Gainesville and Lake Lanier.”

Knight represents the developer for two parcels of land just north of McEver Road on Ga. Hwy. 53, property that has already attracted two restaurants.

The land on the east side of the highway is being graded and dirt is being moved across the street

to create usable and marketable potential retail locations.

The land on the east side will be marketed as Beechwood Crossing. Knight is in the process of securing tenants for this shopping center. With two 8,000square-foot buildings earmarked for restaurants, he said he is hopeful that other retailers will come onto the property. The restaurants will most likely be open in the late spring or summer of 2011.

Growth in the past six months includes the opening of the 35,000-square-foot Goodwill facility and the 15,000-square-foot Tractor Supply in Oakwood.

Michael’s 21,000-square-foot store has been open about a month, as has ULTA Cosmetics’ 10,000-square-foot store.

Knight attributes the increase in retailers to several factors.

“With three colleges – Brenau, Gainesville State and Lanier Tech

– nearby and growth spilling into South Hall from Gwinnett, there’s a demand for retail space,” he said. “Plus retailers like to be near other successful retailers and that’s driving development.”

Part of the development of the land along Highway 53 is the process of creating two level lots from hilly terrain. The 30-foot hill on the east side of the highway is being lowered and the dirt moved across the street to fill up a hole.

Both parcels are being brought level with the street. “We’re working to create sites in response to the pent-up retail demand, master planning the larger 33-acre site,” he said. “There are high traffic counts in the area and good retailer mass right now. Four important words: Steady, bearing, decreasing, and range

By Steve Johnson These four words – steady, bearing, decreasing, and range – are absolutely the most important to understand in safe boating. It is Johnson called by many different names, presented in boating and maritime education courses in a wide variety of methods and titles, but make no mistake: this is the description of relative motion with an impending and sometimes disastrous result … collision.

No matter where you enjoy boating and what type of watercraft you operate this is your primary task. It is in fact the premise for the Rules of the Road also known as; International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. First promulgated in 1972 these rules were adopted by Congress in 1977 when Gerald Ford was president. In the maritime world we calculate this type of relative motion in various ways, especially visual methods. GPS charting/radar systems now in use can give relative motion but most operators prefer a “true geographic” picture of the area around their boat. This automated approach to navigation and underway operation can have some unintended results. The real test of a collision situation is based on one thing and one thing only …

Steady Bearing Decreasing Range. Please remember that!

No matter what navigation system you use or how fast you are going, a steady bearing and decreasing range means you are in the process of “sharing the exact same geographic location with the boat or object you are observing with that relative motion.” In the world of big ships where I come from as navigator or deck officer that was my biggest concern, all the time. If I made a maneuver to avoid collision then I also had to take into account the relative motion that was the result of that maneuver, speed change, turn, or both. As directed in the Rules of the Road, page 18; Rule 8, Para (c) If there is sufficient sea room, alteration of course alone may be the most effective action to avoid a closequarters situation … and there is more text that follows. Why would the authors of this much acclaimed set of rules say that?

The answer is to rapidly and correctly alleviate this danger and to also show the other vessel or vessels that are in this situation to see the movement as well.

The reason I make this point is to show something that could someday keep you from a collision. One of the riskiest moves a boater can make is to wake follow. In a close proximity situation it does not appreciably show the relative motion if the vessel ahead decreases speed either by slowing

the engine or weather and wave factors therefore causing a steady bearing and in some cases, (rapidly) decreasing range. I see jet ski operators and boats do this all the time on the lake and it is not a good practice to adopt. I can give you many examples of dangerous relative motion but I think this would be the most dangerous of all.

In order to practice correct collision avoidance you must possess situational awareness. Basically your actions taken to avoid one situation will have consequences and sometimes put you in danger with other boats. The only real way to make sure you are on a safe, collision free, course and speed is to visually measure the relative motion and avoid Steady

Bearing Decreasing Range. This can be easily accomplished with practice and in this case practice does help make perfect, or at least safer for all concerned.

Three critical Chattahoochee River access areas conserved The Trust for Public Land (TPL) has announced the conservation of three critical paddling locations in the headwaters area of the Chattahoochee River. Located in White, Hall and Habersham counties, the land will be given as a partial donation by TPL to Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources to increase public access to the waterway, while supporting the state and area interest groups in their ongoing efforts to improve ecotourism. “This is a major step to improve access along the river,” says Chris Clark, Commissioner of Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “The conservation of these locations is also going to help future generations experience the wonder and awe of Georgia’s great outdoors.”

The protection of these locations bolsters ongoing efforts to develop a “blueway” on the Chattahoochee River and improve public access to the river for outdoor enthusiasts. Much

like a designated hiking “greenway” on land, a “blueway” enables similar enjoyment of waterways. The land TPL purchased and is donating to the state includes two parcels that Wildwood Outfitters’ has used as watercraft put in/take out locations (1.2 acres in White County and .23 acres in Habersham County). TPL is making a partial donation to the conservation of the 37 acres at Mossy Creek in Hall County, acquired from the estate of John H. Stembler.

These locations are critical to ensure canoeing and rafting enthusiasts continue to have access to the Chattahoochee River. The acquisitions underscore The Trust for Public Land’s continued commitment to secure and protect areas for recreation and public access along the river.

David Martin, Chairman of the TPL Georgia Advisory Committee and an avid kayaker said, “We hope to one day be able to paddle the Chattahoochee River

from the headwaters to the Gulf.”

With these acquisitions The Trust for Public Land continues its Chattahoochee River Protection Campaign to conserve and protect some of the most vulnerable and recognizable river frontage in Georgia. The 37 acres acquired from the Stembler Estate will allow for improved public access and increased conservation by protecting approximately 1,250 feet more of preserved Chattahoochee River frontage. “Visitors from around the country journey to Georgia to enjoy the beauty and excitement of whitewater rapids of the upper Chattahoochee River. What better example of river preservation can TPL give to show our commitment to protecting these great resources,” said Helen Tapp, Executive Director of The Trust for Public Land in Georgia.

Foreclosures impacting third quarter lake home sales

By Bev Knight There’s no question about it – distressed home sales are definitely having an effect on the lake market.

Although the number of homes sold in the third quarter of 2010 is much higher than the previous two Knight years, the glut of distressed properties is driving down prices and adding to the challenges of selling non-distressed lake homes.

“Distressed properties” include foreclosures, short sales, estateowned, corporate-owned and other situations where owners are forced to take less than the market value for their properties. For third quarter sales of Lanier homes with docks, we saw an impressive increase from 33 in 2009 to 57 in 2010, a 73 percent increase. The worst third quarter of this recession was in 2008 when there were only 14 lake homes closed.

In spite of this quarter’s increases in the number of closings, the distressed homes have driven down the sales prices significantly

and lengthened the time it takes to make the sale. In the third quarter of 2009, the average sales price was $569,000 with a norm of 111 days on the market. This year, the average sales price has dropped to around $445,000 with an average of 145 days on the market. Of the 57 properties sold in quarter three, 19 were considered to be distressed. That means that about one third of the properties sold fell into that category.

The good news With that bad news out of the way, it’s time to focus on the good news.

There are quite a few buyers out there. Usually, the lake market is slow in October, but not this year.

We are seeing a record number of showings for this month but everyone is looking for a bargain.

The number of lake homes for sale right now is well below its peak two years ago. If you decide to put your house on the market, you will compete with fewer houses.

While the average sales price is down from last year, it is slightly up from last quarter. It’s expected this trend will continue.

Almost as many homes were sold in the summer of 2010 as were sold in all of 2009.

Sales in Dawsonville and Flowery Branch have been dismal for two years, but they picked up this past quarter. (see accompanying chart).

In the past few years it was mostly lower priced houses being shown. Right now there are more luxury home buyers than we’ve seen since 2007. We’re hoping this is another positive trend that continues.

Mortgages are incredibly affordable right now. You can get a conventional 30-year fixed loan for under 4 percent. Jumbo loans (over $417,000) are back, and the rate is not bad at all – under 5 percent.

Some banks are even offering construction-to-permanent loans again at good rates (just over 5 percent).

Many experts believe that all real estate activity will pick up after the election in November.

We’re hearing that from potential buyers, too. There are plenty of people with the desire and resources to buy a lake house. They just need something to get them off the fence, and perhaps electing the

candidate of their choice will do that.

Bottom line There are bargains for lake home buyers right now. If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a lake home, now is the time. For homeowners who have been waiting to list your lake homes until the market comes back, consider this: Yes, you will get less for your home than you would have a few years ago. But, with the depressed market, you can also buy more with the proceeds from your sale.

Plus, when the market does start to recover, you will have exponentially more competition from other

homeowners who have waited.

Particularly for sellers in Buford and Cumming where the demand often exceeds inventory in certain categories, this would be a good time to list your house. We’re expecting a surge in sales this spring and possibly sooner, so you want to be on the listing services when that starts. It’ll take a couple of months for the fence-sitters to figure out that the recovery is underway, and your house will probably be sold by then.

Holiday races offer festive incentives to get fit

By Jane Harrison Just when North Georgia needs them most, a variety of holiday road races invite participants to burn off extra calories in festive events that celebrate the season. From early November through January, the area abounds with races with holiday monikers – Turkey Trot, Santa Shuffle, Jingle Jog – to mix fitness, fun and family.

The bountiful array of races for runners and walkers comes during the season when many Americans put on extra pounds. A 2000 National Institutes of Health study found that during the sixweek period between Thanksgiving and New Years, people gain more weight than at any other time of the year. The research also reported that study volunteers who were more physically active over the holidays had less weight gain during this high risk time.

The North Georgia races range from one-mile walks and fun runs to 10-kilometer races. Event organizers report their races attract casual walkers, families celebrating the holidays with out-of-town

guests, serious runners and resolution runners – those resolving to improve their fitness in the new year.

The inaugural Lanier Under the Lights 5K at Lake Lanier Islands is expected to be a “huge family event,” said race coordinator Steve Durling. By late October, more than 700 people had registered for the Nov. 13 evening race through the Magical Nights of Lights course. People were signing up for the race “like crazy,” Durling said, prompting him to raise the participant limit to 1,000.

“Lake Lanier has a great light display and this is a great course with an opportunity for families to see it” on foot without the cars, Durling said. He scheduled the race to start just before the 5:36 sunset, so participants can stride alongside illuminated prancing deer and under sparking snowflakes.

As the Christmas season hits full stride at Lake Lanier Islands, turkeys will be trotting in Athens.

Fall brings focus on education for ASPS

By Lisa Beers Fall marks the time of year when many boaters winterize their vessels and put away their thoughts of the lake until the warmer weather of spring arrives again. Even boaters who continue to go out onto the water year round generally find that they spend less time on the lake in the “off season.” This presents a great opportunity for us to spend more time on off the water boating activities, namely education.

Fall and winter are the prime seasons for us all to increase our boating knowledge through seminars and classes, so that when we return to the water in the spring we are more capable and confident than ever. Education can also prepare us for adventures on the water that we may have passed on before, such as coastal cruising and inland waterway journeys.

The Atlanta Sail & Power Squadron offers classes for every boater, of all experience levels.

Our boating basics class, BoatSmart, is tailored toward all boaters without previous formal boating education. It covers boat handling, safety equipment and procedures, navigation basics, boat

And finally, a reminder about our free vessel safety checks. The ASPS offers courtesy vessel examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety

equipment required by state and federal regulations. Your examiner will also make recommendations and discuss safety issues that will make you a safer boater.

This is not a law enforcement issue and no citations will be given as a result of this encounter.

We will however supply you with a copy of our evaluation and explain it to you so that you may follow some of the suggestions given.

It’s never too late in the year for a VSC, and if you haven’t had one yet this season, now is the right time, as you check your vessel over in preparation to winterize.

Experience the real England in Burnham on Crouch On a recent trip to the British Isles, finding an old English meal in London proved a challenge.

Everywhere I looked restaurants were serving “designer” dishes of French, Italian, or Oriental origins. What happened to simple fish and chips or beef stew? This revelation had me heading for the Essex countryside in search of the “REAL” England, which I found in the tiny east-coast community of Burnham on Crouch (www.burnham.org.uk).

Located just over an hour by rail or less than two hours by car from Central London, this bustling village lies on the north bank of the River Crouch, an estuary of the River Thames, and exudes an unmistakable old English flavor.

With its numerous pubs, tea houses, and a range of small, independent shops – think butcher, baker and quaint antique stores – walking the main high street is to discover an England where bigbox stores aka Walmart are inconceivable. For example, the Clock Tower is just one of Burnham’s historic landmarks. Constructed in 1877, this red brick, octagonal tower was dedicated to a local oyster merchant and philanthropist. Later additions to the tower became the Burnham Endowed School that had been founded in 1785 and remained in use until 1973.

Another gem is its cinema which has been in operation since 1931. It has retained a quirky charm not only in its exterior, but also inside by offering patrons a

Sailing has always been one of Burnham’s key attractions and with four yacht clubs along its shoreline, these waters have been the training grounds for many crews of the America’s Cup, Olympic yachting, and World Championship Ocean Racing. On any given day, traffic might suddenly slow behind a boat being manually wheeled out of a backyard, along the high street toward the water. Rather than fray tempers, the sudden slower pace means there’s many a wave, handshake and passing conversation. Even strangers get to enjoy this small town, friendly England.

The best places to see Burnham’s sailing action is along the promenade that extends seven miles up river, past many historic boat buildings, one of which now houses a community museum, and rows of fishermen cottages and white, weatherboard houses.

After all, they’ve passed a rigorous written examination and demonstrated experience on the water that make them – at the very least – licensed to take up to six passengers for hire out on the water.

“Becoming a licensed US Coast Guard Captain involves an intense amount of study in addition to satisfying several other requirements,” said Chuck Kizina, a licensed captain and also the commander of Flotilla 29, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, which is based on Lake Lanier. “Earning this license demonstrates a commitment to a high standard of experience, skill and expertise on the water.”

The basic captain’s license attests that the bearer is approved by Coast Guard standards to take up to six passengers for hire onto a vessel.

“It is prudent for someone looking to hire a boat and skipper to look for someone with at least a six-pack license,” Kizina said. “It establishes that your captain has met the standards established by the U.S. Coast Guard for knowledge, skill and safety.”

The process is lengthy, culminating in a written examination. However, other com-

Sea School is one of several vendors in the Southeast that prepares candidates for the written examination. With headquarters in St. Petersburg, the organization comes to the Atlanta area to teach the 56 hours of classroom time at least four times each year. Sea School is a family-owned business that has six satellite locations across the Southeast. Atlanta and Georgia classes are scheduled through the Charleston office.

“We have people who go through the course just for the valuable information and practice charting that’s part of the course,” said Catherine Giles with Sea School’s Charleston office. “So many boaters see the value in taking the course for safety reasons and never intend to take passengers out for hire. Another benefit is that most insurance companies will give you a discount on your boating insurance if you’ve passed the course.”

Corps begins enforcement of timber trespass, tree removal Did you know that it is illegal to remove trees from public lands surrounding Lake Lanier?

It’s just like going on your neighbor’s property and cutting down trees.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has begun a dedicated program to enforce timber trespass on public lands.

In some cases, selected trees have been removed from Corps property. In others, the land has been clear cut. And while it may be difficult to determine exactly how many and what types of trees have been removed, the US Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District has retained the services of a special Assistant United States Attorney to assist in resolving this situation.

When it is obvious that trees have been removed from Corps’ property, rangers will come out and talk with the homeowner. We will make every effort to determine when the trees were removed and who was responsible for removing them before taking any action.

However, the penalty for removing trees from public lands can be a combination of fines and a requirement to replace trees as much as a two-to-one ratio, depending on the size of the trees that were removed. If there is a dock permit associated with the property the permit will be

conditioned, noting the trespass and may not be Ernest renewed or revoked Noe when significant damage is present. The standard for replacement is 2-inch US Army caliper for overstory Corps of Engineers trees and a one-inch caliper for understory trees. The Corps requires the use of native trees, available at area nurseries. The Corps can provide a list of the acceptable tree species.

As part of the enforcement process, the Corps provides a replanting plan for property owners that includes the number, size and types of trees that must be planted.

There are several reasons for continuing to have trees on Corps’ property: they establish and maintain a natural habitat for wildlife, they help reduce soil erosion and they keep the shoreline natural to reduce the noise levels from the lake.

Lake Lanier has a very limited natural environment on its shorelines and the Corps is working hard to maintain and protect what is there.

Sanders said race volunteers would be getting in the spirit with Santa hats and handing out t-shirts sporting prints of Santa in running shoes The Madison Christmas Rush Classic features a one-mile, 5K and 8K starting at Town Park. The course through the decorated historic district takes runners on a cheery tour of Christmas past in a town that appears right out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Runners and walkers can get in some shopping, visit Santa, and make ornaments at the Loganville Jingle Jog and Reindeer Dash Fun Run, also on Dec. 11. The 5K and one-miler follow paved roads around West Walton Park.

If funky turkeys, shuffling Santas and animated lights don’t inspire folks to get off the couch for a holiday romp outside, maybe wise men and sleigh bells will.

The Dec. 5 Sleighbell 5K Run/Walk in Winterville and the Dec. 19 Wisemen 5K and Fun Run in Bethlehem beckon runners and walkers to towns whose names fit the season.

Those wanting to get in a good workout or stroll just before year’s end may line up at the start of Lawrenceville’s Flashlight 5K on New Year’s Eve. The race attracts “quite a mix of partici-

pants,” said Allen Hoskyn, executive pastor of the First United Methodist Church, which puts on the event. He expects many of the around 500 participants will be there with a resolution to “start the new year in a healthy way.” Others will be racing for points in the final race of the Georgia Running Grand Prix race series.

Hoskyn said that some runners actually bring compact flashlights, but they are not needed, as spectators and businesses illumine the two-lap course through the historic downtown.

Finally, if the season gets away before the advent of 2011 without a Thanksgiving trot or Christmas jaunt, there’s the Resolution Run in Kennesaw on New Year’s Day. The 5K, 10K stroller friendly one-miler and 50-meter dash for kids organized by the Atlanta Track Club kick off the new year with something for nearly everyone.

Participants in holiday races not only get satisfaction from healthy activity, they also donate to community needs through their registration fees.

Races benefit children with autism, homeless shelters, impoverished families, and charitable organizations.

Just about all the races offer on-line registration through www.active.com, making it easy for prospective participants to set a fitness goal and a date to achieve it by paying up front to be there at the starting line on race day.

Criticizing Georgia weather unpatriotic, treasonous Phillip is taking a break from writing this month. Please enjoy the following “Best Of” column from 2008.

Now that we're well into the fall season, I think it is safe to write my annual “I hate summer” column. You may not have noticed, but I skipped my seasonal slam of the hot weather months the last couple of years. That probably had something to do with “the letter to the editor.”

Over the years, I have whined incessantly about why I hate summer weather in Georgia. I have covered every possible reason from swarms of man-eating horseflies and mosquitoes the size of Brown Thrashers to cases of sunburn that supported my theory that I am part Native American.

Of course, my most vehement rant occurred a couple of years ago when I had the nerve to suggest that the humidity in this state was uncomfortable. Combined with mentioning my visit to a Scandinavian country with zero humidity, I was pegged by one reader as a threat to everything that is good and wholesome about this great state.
