By Jane Harrison Elevated levels of algae-producing chlorophyll a in Lake Lanier during a five-year span appear to be weather-driven and are similar to levels the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has found at lakes it monitors statewide.

In fact, Lanier is better off than most of Georgia’s lakes, which have higher pollutant counts than the north Georgia reservoir. “The chlorophyll levels in Lanier are among the lowest in the state, typical of those seen in lakes in the Blue Ridge,” according to Elizabeth Booth, Ga. EPD Program Manager for Watershed Planning & Management.

But, still things could be better, especially on rainy days, when torrents cause pollution levels to rise beyond clean water standards set for Lanier. Communities, private entities, industries and individuals can’t hide behind the rain that washes pollutants into the lake. What’s spread on the ground, leaked from septic tanks, and dropped from farm animals eventually flows into the lake. Lake pollution spikes when it rains, but don’t blame the rain.

That’s part of the message EPD officials conveyed in a May

webinar organized by Lake Lanier Association Executive Director Jennifer Flowers. Runoff after rainy winters in 2018 and 2019 likely caused spikes in the algae nutrient that caused EPD to classify sampling sites on Lanier as impaired.

Booth explained that sampling sites with two years of violations in a five-year period get labeled impaired. Samples are usually taken April-October; however none were taken in April and May 2020 because analysis normally occurs in small labs where social distancing required during the coronavirus pandemic was not possible.

“We saw a similar pattern on all 28 lakes” EPD monitors in Georgia, Booth said. “2019 was a very wet year, with twice as much rainfall as usual.” During and after nearly daily rain, water gushed from shoreline activities, depositing loads of nutrients, especially phosphorous, into the

lake. “It was meteorologically driven” she said, and originated largely from non-point sources.

Non-point sources include stormwater runoff, agricultural livestock, farming practices, leaking septic systems, land application systems, landfills and urban development.

EPD can quantify effluent from point sources, such as wastewater treatment plants, industries, municipal storm sewers, industrial storm water, and community developments it permits and monitors. “The point sources are at a constant level,” said Ania Truszczynski, Assistant Branch Chief of EPD’s Watershed Protection Branch. “In rainfall events, chlorophyll a tends to jump,” indicating the role of non-point runoff for elevated nutrients.

Chlorophyll a is a pigment in green plants that absorbs light for photosynthesis to produce food.

Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus fuel the process.

When nutrient loadings are high, algae can proliferate, thereby increasing the amount of measurable chlorophyll a in the water. It can produce odd tasting and smelling water, which costs more for water treatment plants to treat.

Fish love to eat it, but thick coat-

ings of it can deplete oxygen and kill fish. Algae blooms can be toxic to pets and humans if they get into bright green water.

In the recent EPD findings from 2015-2019, all five Lanier testing sites were classified as impaired. Lanier Bridge at Ga. 53 on the Chattahoochee River had the highest levels for most of the period, followed by Boling Bridge at Ga. 53 on the Chestatee River. Other sites at Browns Bridge Road, upstream from Flowery Branch, and upstream from Buford Dam had lower chlorophyll a levels. Booth said most of the nutrients are “used up” in the upper reaches of the lake before they get to the dam.

The main nutrient is phosphorous, an ingredient in fertilizer and present in animal waste.

Because of the impairment classification, EPD is holding up permits for new and expanded wastewater treatment plant discharges requested in Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties and has set reduction standards for Gainesville, Cornelia, Baldwin, Clarkesville, Cleveland, and Scoville Fasteners, a Clarkesville See LLA, page 16

Improvements at Linwood Water Facility

By Pamela A. Keene Boaters near Holly Park in Gainesville over the past several months may have noticed a construction crane hovering along the shoreline and barges in the water of Lake Lanier.

They signal work being done by the City of Gainesville to replace the outflow pipe at the Linwood Water Reclamation Facility.

“The infrastructure there is decades-old, put in when the lake was first being filled,” said Linda MacGregor, director of the Department of Water Resources for the City of Gainesville. “The replacement includes installing a 36-inch pipe and relocating the actual discharge point for the reclaimed water.”

The new pipe will rest on the bottom of Lake Lanier at a depth of 1000 mean feet above sea level, 71 feet below the surface of the lake at full pool. “The new pipe will have an improved diffuser that will disperse the treated water into the lake and moderate its temperature as it enters the lake,” she said.

“The end of the pipe will be about 800 feet from one side of the lake and 850 feet from the other.”

The project, weighing in at a construction cost of approximately $2.7 million, is expected to be complete by late June.

The older discharge pipe will remain at the bottom of the lake to reduce any disturbance of the bottom of the lake.

Lake level: 1071.79 Temperature: 60s Clarity: Clear in main lake, creeks stained from recent rains General report We had a great day on Lake Lanier (in late May) but found several of our favorite places already had boats on them and we had to cover a lot of water to find places to fish.

Needless to say, they are what we call “community holes” but if your timing is right you will find they will often be holding fish.

We were on the water at Balus ramp at 6:05 a.m. It was 53 degrees, cloudy skies and a light wind as we again headed south.

Our first stop, a long shallow 100-yard point was occupied by a lone heron which we could see was feeding on baitfish that was being pushed up into shallow one to two foot of water.

While we positioned the boat to drop our power pole and fish

the leading edge of the drop off into deep water we saw several fish chasing bait close to where the heron was feeding. Using spinning tackle with 18 pound braid and 10 pound flurocarbon leader allowed us to make extremely long casts without having to move the boat and spook the feeding fish. We could see an occasional fish chasing bait and sometimes as many as a half dozen fish were feeding.

The key was keeping a bait in the water along the leading edge where the bait was being pushed up into shallow water. This was one of our best mornings of the year for stripers, spots and largemouths. Shallow running jerkbaits and three-inch Kietech swim-baits were all we needed to use.

Bass fishing Bass fishing is fair. The majority of our fish recently have come from 10 feet or less. You will find the fish are now shallow all over the lake. Points, secondary points, shallow humps, rocks, docks,

backs of pockets. They are all holding fish. We are at the point of the year where you can throw practically anything you want and catch fish from top water lures, under spins, swimbaits, flukes and shaky heads will all catch ’em right now, along with plenty of other baits as well. The recent cold front knocked the fish back a little earlier but we look for the aggressive bite to return as the weather warms.

Stay shallow and versatile to find the best options each day, and switch to a shaky head or Ned rig presentation if the moving bait bite is tough. Also, fish

are starting to gather in the brush in 15 to 20 feet of water. A shaky head/worm combo is a good bet to catch those fish as well as a jerkbait.

Stripers fishing Striper fishing has been good.

It has been stabilizing because of the weather.

Use your electronics and search for bait in the creek channels and over points in 30 to 50 feet deep. You may not mark many fish but using the drumming stick will draw the fish in.

Blue backs on down lines are working so vary the depth of the bait 15 to 35 feet deep.

The Mini Mac being used as a down line has in the same way produced some fish as well. The white bass and catfish will bite using the same methods.

Corps opened most day-use parks for Memorial Day Weekend

The Corps announced the opening of all parks, except for Buford Dam Park in Gwinnett County, right before the holiday weekend.

In its news release, it speci-

fied that all beaches, shelters and playground areas would remain closed. Additionally, the Corps has continued to keep all campground facilities closed, according to Corps officials.

“The health and safety of USACE personnel, contractors, volunteers and the visiting public are our highest priority, according to the news release that was is-

sued from the public affairs office of the Mobile District. “We continue monitoring national health and safety data, we appreciate the public's understanding as we move ahead with our phased re-openings. Please continue maintaining safe social distancing with other guests, and consider bringing hand sanitizer for additional safety.”

Gainesville Garden re-opening not yet set

By Jane Harrison The Gainesville Garden of the Atlanta Botanical Garden did not open in May and officials were still undecided about when to re-open as the month wound down. Although the botanical garden’s main midtown attraction opened its gates for limited guests on May 23, the woodland oasis in

Gainesville remained closed.

Gainesville Garden Director Mildred Fockele said re-opening was postponed due to Hall County being labeled a “hot spot” for coronavirus. “We are developing our opening plan that will be safe for staff and visitors,” she said by email. “We know that we will be doing timed tickets, just as Atlanta is doing.” Tickets will be

available for purchase online only with timed entry to ensure a crowd free experience.

Gainesville Garden June classes have been postponed.

There will be no concerts in the garden this year. Wine in the Woodland may make a comeback, depending on when the garden re-opens, Fockele said.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK LLOP QUIET IN JUNE Dragon Boat Fest called off, swim event set for fall

By Jane Harrison Lake Lanier Olympic Park, traditionally bursting with summer activities, lies quiet and serene this month, except for solo paddlers practicing in limited numbers. The June Food Truck Friday, kayak day camp, moonlight paddle, rowing lessons, Paddlemania and dragon boat training originally planned this month were canceled or postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

It’s hoped that some activities will resume in July, however, organizers of one of the major LLOP events in September decided not to stage it this year. The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, which attracts thousands to the venue for a multicultural dragon boat racing event, was called off.

“After careful consultation with our title sponsor and advisory board regarding the health and safety of everyone who attends the Lake Lanier Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival – our teams, our sponsors, volunteers and spectators – we have made the very difficult decision to postpone the celebration of our 25th Anniversary originally scheduled

for September 12th, 2020 to September 11th, 2021,” said Tracy Barth, festival director.

Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club spokesperson Jim O’Dell reported in late May that the club was still uncertain about hosting moonlight paddles and offering recreation rentals. A potential moonlight paddle is set for July 3.

LCKC hopes to bring small groups of kids to day camps in July and early August. On its website, www.lckc.org, the club is accepting registrations for virtual Paddlemania races set for June 13. The July Summer Sprints will be limited to LCKC members doing a club time trial.

O’Dell said team members are practicing at staggered times in single kayaks, with 10 athletes at a time. There will be no piling into dragon boats – which hold 19 paddlers – until the club decides it’s safe. Dragon boats may race in October at a local festival. “We are planning to safely host Dragons at the Park in October. Working on plans for this now and invite all interested vendors and participants to contact us about opportunities for this race,” O’Dell said.

Swim Across America-Atlanta officials planned to put hundreds of swimmers into the water Sept. 26 in the annual fundraiser for childhood cancer research. The open water halfmile/5K/1-mile swim for individuals and teams, held in past years at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, has attracted more than 600 regional swimmers of all skill levels, plus Olympians and cancer survivors.

“Details of any potential changes to the open water swim in light of the COVID-19 outbreak in Georgia are still forthcoming. The event will follow recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and health officials,” organizers said in a statement.

The Lake Lanier Rowing Club cancelled its June Learn to Row sessions but plans to go ahead with classes in July and August.

The club also scheduled high school and middle school camps in July.

May and June Food Truck Fridays were canceled, but the popular party on the plaza may make a comeback July 10.

Outdoor pool openings postponed

Outdoor pool decks, water slides, and splash pads remained high and dry Memorial Day Weekend, normally the season opener for outdoor public pools and water parks.

Most beaches on Lanier welcomed sunbathers and swimmers, while at least one public pool offered indoor lap swimming and another planned to open June 8.

Coronavirus concerns caused many pool managers to indefinitely postpone opening aquatic facilities even though Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s May 12 executive order allowed them to open.

The state Department of Public Health lists numerous cleaning and disinfection guidelines for them to follow.

Indoor pools at the Cumming

Aquatic Center opened May 20 for adult swim in the instructional pool and lap swimming in the competition pool on a first come first serve basis.

The instructional pool bather load is 12 swimmers and the competition pool bather load will be 30 swimmers. The facility will be closed on Sunday and the outdoor leisure pool remained closed until further notice. Information: www.cummingaquaticcenter.com.

As of late May, the Dawson County Parks Department hoped to open the outdoor pool at Veterans Park June 8.

A spokesperson contacted at the parks office said the opening date was “not set in stone.” Patrons must practice social distancing and bring their own chairs.

In Gainesville, the Parks and Recreation Department hoped to

offer a phased reopening of the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center this month. Parks officials anticipated making an announcement at the end of May, after the Lakeside News deadline. See www.gainesville.org.

As of late May, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands had made public no decision about opening the water park, one of the most popular recreation sites on the lake.

Following in the wake of Mark Twain on the ‘Hooch’ Living on and around Lake Lanier we are all spoiled by the number of different things to enjoy out on the open water. We forget that the Chattahoochee River flows right through it, although about 150 feet below the surface, entering just north of Gainesville and exiting at Buford Dam. The “Hooch” meanders all the way from Helen down to Florida and it forms the boundary between Georgia and Alabama for the southern half of the state and part of the border with Florida.

The Chattahoochee is a uniquely “Georgian” thing because once it crosses the border into Florida the name changes to Apalachicola.

A good excuse for a party in the fall is a “Fall Foliage Tour.”

going more or less silently you get a chance to see a lot of wildlife that otherwise would be frightened away by the sound of a motor. We’ve seen red headed hawks, egrets, great blue herons, and even a bald eagle! Not to mention all kinds of fish, snapping turtles, deer and racoons.

You’ll also sneak a peek at the back yards of some of the “rich and famous” who are fortunate

enough to live on the river. It’s hard to imagine that you’re in the middle of an urban, or at least semi urban area. This is an experience you won’t forget!

If municipal areas can control the volume of water running into the lake through stormwater mitigation, it can force the water back into the

ground rather than running directly into the lake, Booth said.

She added that local projects, such as one currently under way in Gwinnett County, can help. Gwinnett County is working on a project to assess and measure the amount of pollutants discharging into Lake Lanier from septic tanks. Additionally, farmers, urban developments and homeowners can help by cutting back and carefully measuring fertilizer application and by not applying lawn nutrients before rain.

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 18, when the 6th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival comes roaring into living rooms across the state.

It’s one of the virtual events sponsored by the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper to keep members and the community engaged.

“This year the event will be streamed online, giving even more people access to an incredible line-up of films for a great cause,” said Mallory Pendleton, CRK Headwaters Office outreach manager. “It’s crucial right now that we do whatever we can to continue to connect the community in safe ways, especially when it comes to environmental issues.”

Films include “Bare Existence” about protection of polar bears, and “Love, Trails & Dinosaurs,” telling the story of Garan Moore, the first person with autism to hike every trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Several guest speakers are tentatively scheduled, including Juliet Cohen, executive

director of CRK; Jason Ulseth, Riverkeeper at CRK; and Andrew Linker, outreach coordinator at Georgia ForestWatch.

The ticketed event will begin at 6:30 p.m., allowing time for a staggered log-in to the link. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and last approximately two hours.

The ticket purchase includes an annual membership to Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.

Let’s Chatt series CRK has presented several webinars of public interest over the past couple of months. Called “Let’s Chatt,” the next one in the series is titled “What’s in Lake Lanier?” It will take place on

Wednesday, June 3, at noon.

The webinar will cover a variety of topics beyond Lake Lanier as one of the most visited lakes in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s system. It will address lake issues, including the lake as a drinking water source for millions, regional demands to sustain industries and challenges to its ecosystem for wildlife preservation.

Clean Drinking Water Week hydrant contest winners To promote Clean Drinking Water Week (May 3-9) and the vital role that water has in our lives, the City of Gainesville Water Resources held an Elementary School Fire Hydrant Design Contest.

The contest was open to all K5 students across Hall County.

Three winners were selected, and each had their design painted on a fire hydrant by local artist Fox Gradin of Celestial Studios.

Gradin also painted a hydrant with one of her own designs.

The winning designs were submitted by Addison D., Mount Vernon Elementary School, Andy R., Gainesville Exploration Academy, and Lucas B., White Sulphur Elementary School.

By Pamela A. Keene The Headwaters Office of the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper has a new outreach manager, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Meet Mallory Pendleton who will planning community activities and events for the headwaters and river basin of Lake Lanier.

“Learning about the natural world was instilled in me from an early age,” Pendleton said. “By the time I got to college and chose my major in biology, I knew this was what I wanted to do for my career. It’s amazing how everything is so connected.”

A graduate of the University of Alabama, she works out of the Gainesville office, organizing events, leading outings and field trips, conducting fundraising initiatives, and representing CRK at community events.

“For me, education and community outreach are crucial to the future of the Chattahoochee River, and it’s where I get a lot of my passion,” she said. “Working with people and helping them understand how they can be part of the solution to sustainability is

Pendleton will be working closely with volunteers at the Headwaters office.

“With the current safety considerations for our staff, volunteers and the community, we have scaled back our community programs, including water sampling,” said Dale Caldwell, director of the Headwaters office.

“Mallory is getting to know many of them over the phone during this time and we are encouraging people to be alert and let us know about areas that need our attention.”

Caldwell said that currently staff is following up about reported community concerns, going out themselves to gather water samples when needed.

Then they process them at the Gainesville office.

Enjoying rare spring weather I get quite a few emails every day, mostly with questions about the weather. There has been one underlying theme this spring. My viewers have all been saying this is the first time in decades we’ve actually had a spring.

Yes indeed! I remember last year we went right from winter into the 80s. This year, right up until just before the Memorial Day weekend, we had lows in the 40s in the mountains, 50s across most of north Georgia for morning lows. Highs were only in the 60s and 70s into late May! I did a little poll on social media and about 70 percent of my followers loved the cooler weather.

You may be asking if the cooler spring weather will continue into the summer. I am glad you asked! The Climate Prediction Center has given north Georgia a 60 percent chance of above average temperatures. I personally think we will spend most days in the mid to upper 80s and not 90s.

Why you ask? It’s because the Climate Prediction Center is also predicting above average rainfall. Afternoon summer storms are nature’s temperature regulators. If we have frequent summer storms, temperatures will stay down.

Here are the rainfall averages for the

summer months. This of course can vary greatly if we have a tropical Glenn system or two, but here Burns are the numbers based on the average monthly rainfall over the past 30 Lanier years.

Outlook In June, we average just under four inches of rain. July is the wettest month of the year for north Georgia where we average 5.27 inches of rain. In August, the average drops dramatically to 3.9 inches. As I said, the prediction is for us to exceed these monthly averages.

In addition, the National Hurricane Center is also predicting an above average hurricane season. The bottom line here is we are not going to have to worry about low lake levels like we have in the past.

I know we’ve had a tough go with the COVID-19 virus, but at least we will be able to get out on the lake and enjoy the great outdoors.

I wish you all a great summer. We’ll chat next month as the tropics begin to heat up.

We’ve already had Tropical Storm Arthur a week before the official start of the season. That could be a clue as to what to expect later in the summer.

Georgia’s rebuttal expected this month Oysterman, environmentalists file briefs in water wars lawsuit

By Jane Harrison Georgia is expected to strike back against Florida’s bashing of a Special Master’s report in a court rebuttal due this month.

Georgia attorneys drafting a reply to Florida’s arguments with the federal court official’s recommendations to the Supreme Court have until June 12 to file a response.

In its April backlash against Special Master Paul J. Kelly’s report, Florida accused the Supreme Court appointee of failing to invest time and effort in the 2013 lawsuit over water in a river system between the two states. Kelly, the second special master to consider the matter, recommended in Dec. 2019 that the court deny Florida’s claims and drop the case.

Florida seeks equitable allocation of water in the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint river basin and a cap of Georgia water use at current levels until 2050. The river system springs from headwaters in North Georgia, is joined by the Flint River in South Atlanta, and flows into the Apalachicola River at the state

line. Florida accuses Georgia of hoarding water and causing ecological and economical harm downstream in Apalachicola Bay, where freshwater flows nourish a perishing oyster industry.

Initially, Lake Lanier stakeholders feared Florida coveted more water from Lanier, the largest reservoir on the rivers and the major water supplier to metro Atlanta. But Florida’s case largely targeted Georgia farmers on the Flint River, who tap more water than metro consumers and industries.

Kelly’s report, expected to be a key influence on justices’ opinions, deemed Georgia water use “reasonable.” He noted Georgia conservation efforts and contrasted Georgia’s larger economy and population with the tiny region at stake on the Gulf. He quoted witnesses who blamed woes suffered downstream in Apalachicola Bay on Florida mismanagement of resources rather than on Georgia water consumption. In the end, he cited evidence that the cost to Georgia of limiting water consumption would be greater than the benefit of poten-

tial additional flow into Florida.

Kelly’s call of duty in the water war began in Aug. 2018 after the court remanded the first special master’s recommendations and assigned the case to the senior judge on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. He took up the assignment that Ralph I. Lancaster, now deceased, said would bring grief to both sides. After investing four years of evidence gathering, conferences, and hearings, including a month-long trial, Lancaster denied Florida’s claims on a technicality. He ruled that even if Georgia’s flows were limited, there was no guarantee that additional water would reach Florida because the Corps of Engineers controls the volume released downstream on dams.

In a 5-4 decision, justices said Lancaster used “too strict a standard” for Florida to prove its case. Some justices seemed to express sympathy for Florida.

“You’d think that if we’re being equitable here, it would be equitable to give at least a little bit to Florida,” Stephen Breyer suggested in the Jan. 2018 hearing.

Kelly’s recommendations seemed to follow the sentiments Justice Clarence Thomas expressed in his dissent: that Georgia’s larger economy and population could suffer “massive harms” if Florida prevails in the fight that may or may not benefit the oyster industry in the Panhandle. He wrote, “Imposing an enormously high cost on one State so that another State can achieve a hollow victory is ‘not the high equity that moves the conscience of the court in giving judgment between states’.”

Georgia officials deemed Kelly’s report, filed about a month after a 1½ hour hearing with states’ attorneys in Albuquerque, as a major victory. In its 68-page response, Florida offered what it described as a final plea to save the Apalachicola region.

Lead attorney Gregory G. Garr, a veteran in the high courtroom, accused Kelly of hearing no witnesses, taking no new evidence,

and denying statements from the former special master’s report that Florida suffered harm and that Georgia’s water use was irresponsible.

After Georgia’s reply this month, another round of surreplies is due in July. The case could potentially appear on the court’s October calendar. The price tag for each state exceeds $40 million in legal fees.

In late April, oystermen, environmentalists, wildlife biologists, and Apalachicola Riverkeeper filed amicus briefs pleading for the court to equitably allocate water. The Franklin County Seafood Workers Association, centered in Apalachicola, described in folksy tones the oystering traditions that have sculpted their culture for generations.

The 14-page brief offers a sentimental appeal for justices to save a lifestyle steeped in oysters.

the fleets by ministers, and oyster eating contests. Inherent in the plea, however, is a reality noted by a three-generation oysterman quoted in the brief. “Before 2012, there were 500-600 small oyster boats that regularly carried tongers out onto the Bay. Now there are just two.” The brief insinuates that the lack of freshwater flow killed off the oyster industry, but does not indicate whether the tradition is dying simply because a younger generation is choosing other vocations or if competition from other sites, including oyster farms, is impacting Apalachicola’s long time fame in the oyster market.

The National Audubon Society, Apalachicola Riverkeeper, Florida Wildlife Federation, and Defenders of Wildlife reiterated a joint amicus brief originally filed in Oct. 2016. It supports equitable apportionment of ACF waters to benefit the ecological needs of each river.

The meaning of ‘showing the ropes’

This nautical parlance is sometimes used in our English vocabulary and is subject specifically of the word, ropes. The phrase actually refers to knowledge and level of understanding which can be applied to many subjects and tasks. The origins are nautical, and are a required skill demand in terms of being a crew member on sailing ships.

It also comes in three different versions or levels of proficiency: Learning the Ropes, Knowing the Ropes, and Showing the Ropes. It is identical to progression of knowledge and understanding on how to accomplish things, certainly in the expanse of the maritime realm.

A great way to make your voyages more enjoyable and secure is to perform three things: learn, know, and then show, in that order. This valuable knowledge is crucial to the success of that objective making the water environment much safer for everyone.

Maritime know-how may originate from online, a class, or demonstration, and is most effective if performed by actual witness from trained boaters to fellow enthusiasts that are new to

the aquatic lifestyle. The best long term, productive, teaching methods always incorporate a transfer of personal experience.

You can reach this goal through many professional organizations and schools that specialize in this discipline. Regardless of the level of experience, everyone needs some degree of training, whether for introduction of general information, renewal of license, a proficiency assessment for a credential, or just to improve on their nautical skills. Poker Run registration continues; organizers optimistic

By Pamela A. Keene The 12th Annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run is slated for July 16-18 and organizers are optimistic that the event will go on as planned.

“Registrations are going well and we are moving ahead with our plans,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, organizers of the annual summer fundraiser. “In years past we’ve had our maximum of 300 boats, and we hope to do so again this year.”

This year, it will again raise money for Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and Edmondson-Telford Center.

The event will take place in

and around Lanier Islands as home base, with a Meet and Greet on Thursday night, Cheeseburger on Paradise Beach midday on Friday and the Captains’ Safety Meeting on Friday evening.

“The main event – the on-thewater poker run – will of course take place on Saturday with boats going to various card stops to collect their poker cards,” Geib said.

“And we are hoping to culminate the weekend on Saturday night with our traditional Casino Night and Awards Party, followed by fireworks over Lake Lanier.”

Geib said that the group is exploring options for events to ensure social distancing, if those orders are still in place by the

governor’s office.

“We are encouraging people to go ahead and register,” he said.

“We are very hopeful that the Poker Run will take place. After all, we’re raising money for the kids, and what could be a better cause than that?”

Squirrels at the feeder: the bane of my existence!

Rats with furry tails that steal food from the mouths of babes – baby birds, that is. Pesky rodents that find their way to bird feeders no matter where you put them, how much money you pay for them or what the manufacturers guarantee. You know who I mean: squirrels.

Aside from deer in the garden, squirrels at the feeder are the bane of my existence – and from what I can tell, many of my gardening and bird-watching friends agree.

Just last month, national news outlets like the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune reported that sheltering at home has caused explosive growth in birding. Whether people are hanging more feeders and bird houses or they’re safely socially distancing by taking hikes to some of Georgia’s best birding trails, the number of folks letting their lives go to the birds is soaring.

Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology are the go-to expert resources for birders.

You can use these resources to identify birds, track your sightings, plan birding trips close to home and around the globe – once we can all travel again – and find the best locations for seeing rare species, all from the comfort of your living room.

But back to those squirrels. In watching my half-dozen feeders outside my office windows, the nearly 18 regular bird species who come to visit peacefully share the space with squirrels and chipmunks. Truth be told, it’s not the birds I worry about; it’s the piggish rodents that gobble up every last morsel of the black-oil sunflower seeds we diligently replenish each week.

Here’s the thing: many companies make what they call ‘squirrel-proof’ feeders. Not so. From feeders with perches that slam shut if triggered by anything heavier than an ounce to fancy mechanical ones that spin intruders off the bottom, I’ve tried them all. You know the names: Droll Yankee, Squirrel Buster, Brome, etc.

Baffles, hung from above or mounted on poles from below, don’t work either. A beautiful plexiglass squirrel guard dome installed over a cylindrical feeder didn’t even slow down the squirrels who made their way to the feeders below. They’d tight-rope across the shepherd’s hook hangers and jump across the closest feeder and voila – supper.

The squirrels must have been going to the gym during shelterat-home, because they have also found ways to loop their back feet into the holes where the seeds come out, do some ab crunches to retrieve seeds, then hang upside down to eat. Their 8-packs make Zac Efron’s 6-pack look like a feather pillow.

I tried using bacon grease to make the 3-inch aluminum poles that support our feeders slick.

What a mess! The squirrels would use a nearby shrub to get a running start, wrap their arms and legs around the pole and slide down a couple of times. By then the pole wasn’t greased anymore, so they’d message all their friends to come to the feast. All I got was the entertainment of seeing these little critters get their bellies greased.

So, I took pruners into my own hands and cut back the evergreen shrubs under the feeders.

Big mistake. Now we’re pulling out all the remnants and replacing them with shorter shrubs.

An internet search turned up a solution. Squirrels don’t like spicy hot food, but it doesn’t seem to bother the birds. A trip to the Flowery Branch Wild Bird Supply store behind Chick-fil-A and a consultation with the clerk and 10 minutes later I emerged with two large bags of something called “hot chips,” cayenne pepper-coated shelled sunflower seeds. She also suggested that I start with a couple of inches of just the hot chips, then mix some with the black-oil sunflower seeds to fill the balance of the feeder.

That was last week. Today, it

seems like the hot chips have done their job maybe a little too well. Aside from a couple of cardinals, a chickadee or two and some nuthatches, no one, and I mean no one, has been by to eat.

Surely, once the birds discover that the heat won’t hurt them, they’ll be back, but for now, I’m sticking with my plan.

At least I’ve out-squirrelled the squirrels.

What one man would do for a brewery leads to intriguing name “I would give my left nut to own a brewery.” That was the answer to a question posed to Nilanjan Datta. The question was “What do you want to do now that you are retiring?” And so, Left Nut Brewing was born.

The brewery is located inside the old Chicopee facility in Gainesville, just down the road from the well known golf course.

The building was originally constructed in 1927. It has a great industrial feel, but all of the wood warms the interior to sidestep the usual cold feeling from this type of building. The Chicopee area is named after the Chicopee Manufacturing Company, which was a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. There is a small display area showing some of the building’s history. It is worth looking at while you sip an adult beverage which we will now discuss.

The brew house and the tap room are all together in the heart of the facility. You are literally drinking your beer 20 feet from where it was brewed. The positioning of the brewing system, with several gleaming fermenters lined up, is a well placed backdrop for the taproom. Some breweries hide their equipment, while

others only allow tours of the areas. Left Nut Brewing is hiding nothing, this is where all the magic happens.

As for the reason we came here, let’s grab a pint and enjoy the fruits of their labors. Summer is fast approaching, lighter colored beers will be the norm at breweries and Left Nut is no exception. Thankfully they have not forgotten the stout drinkers, rare as that is.

Berry Delish-us – A tropical stout at 7 percent. A raspberry hazelnut stout that is a bit different. A smooth and sweeter stout that is a nice departure from your usual bitterness. You’ll taste a raspberry hint in every sip, along with a hint of cocoa. A nice beer but, even for a stout drinker like myself, this is only a one per day beer as it tips the scale on the sweetness just a little too much

for me.

Rapture – a blonde stout, yes blonde stout! At 5.6 percent, it’s a bit lighter than what you may expect. Nice and smooth from the nitro system. The coffee comes through subtly bitter, a coffee bitter not a hop bitterness so a bit easier on the other flavors. This is a good, easy drinking beer that packs in flavor where you don’t expect it due to the lighter appearance. The blonde stout is gaining in popularity. It’s a unique style, but a good flavor.

Hooch Shootin, New England Style IPA – Piney IPA, 6.5 percent boil and dry hopped, bitter, slightly juicy with Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic hops. Great beer for a Saturday afternoon.

Wahoo Wheat – A traditional wheat beer coming in at 6.3 percent. Brewed with coriander and orange peel for subtle citrus sweetness. This is one that you can easily drink several of; this is smooth, slightly sweet and the citrus is a perfect blend for the wheat base. For those who feel that wheat beers are not their thing, this one deserves a try as it is very well balanced. I like this beer and can see this being on the boat this summer.

Mighty Banyan – Double IPA at 9 percent, you will feel this a bit quicker than most! This is a very malty IPA, with a citrus, grapefruit and pine influence.

This is a great tasting IPA for the IPA drinkers, but non-IPA drinkers will enjoy this beer also.

The heavy malt quantity in the grain bill really comes through on this one, a very nice balance to the hop bitterness. It is a heavy beer, with a lot of mouth feel that lets flavors linger.

Sweet Magnolia – 4.5 percent Golden Style Ale kissed with a subtle hint of mango. Quaffable and balanced, the quintessential summer beer. Light-bodied, easy to drink with a soft mouthfeel, slightly effervescent. Overall a nice, crisp beer to enjoy during the social distancing days and beyond when we are able to gather in crowds to play corn hole and listen to live music outside. This might be my new boat beer or beach beer.

As for the near future, Left Nut Brewing isn’t resting on their laurels. A light easy drinking lager is in the works for release this summer. Their goal was to create a lager to tie to Lake Lanier. Lake Gold Lager will be

coming soon!

Another beer style that has gained in popularity in the last few years is the milkshake IPA, and here they come! In the works for later this year are three that sound great, only to be made better by the inclusion of fresh fruits from Jaemor Farms at harvest time: Strawberry Milkshake IPA, Blackberry Milkshake IPA and Peach Milkshake IPA are all being released later this year.

A project with The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is in the works as well, Pure Source IPA is coming this summer.

LNB is at the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River, indicating the reason behind the name. A June release is set along with a portion of the proceeds going to The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.

It will contain Cashmere and Azacca hops which are not common hops, but impart interesting qualities and aromatics. This is a must taste as it is sure to be a great IPA and will also benefit a great organization.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

National Fishing and Boating Week set for June 6-14 Need a reason to go fishing and boating? Here are just a few: Connection – fishing and boating offer a great way to connect with family and friends; Stress Relief – fishing is a great way to relax; and Conservation - the funds from your fishing license help conserve Georgia lakes, rivers and streams. National Fishing and Boating Week, June 6-14.

The celebration offers another great reason to get outdoors, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. “Did you know that most people are introduced to fishing by a family member, and most consider a family member to be their best fishing friend?” said Thom Litts, Chief of the Fisheries Management Section. “Teaching a child to fish, or taking an outing to a nearby waterway can help build a conservation ethic, while also introducing an exciting activity you can enjoy together for life.”

National Fishing and Boating Week began in 1979 and was created to recognize the tradition of fishing, to broaden the spirit of togetherness and to share the values and knowledge of today’s anglers with tomorrow’s anglers.

How to celebrate In the spirit of introducing new family members or friends to the sport of angling, Georgia offers two free fishing days – Sat., June 6 and Sat., June 13 – during this special week. On these days, Georgia residents do not need a fishing license, trout license or Lands Pass (WMAs/PFAs) to fish.

Where to celebrate: There are many great places to fish in Georgia, from trout streams in North Georgia, to large reservoirs, to lazy rivers in the south part of the state. You can always start at one of the 10 Public Fishing Areas

(www.georgiawildlife.com) or at one of many Georgia State Parks (www.gastateparks.org/) that offer fishing opportunities for family and friends.

According to the National Fishing and Boating Week website, one of the main reasons people don’t go fishing or boating is because no one has invited them.

Summer fishing day camps set for Go Fish Education Center The Go Fish Education Center is hosting three Fishing Day Camps this June and July. Limited space is available and registration deadlines are quickly approaching, so be sure to register soon. Participating kids will learn how to fish, receive safety tips, casting instructions and how to clean your catch. They will also learn about fish biology, habitats and conservation – all through guided instruction, tours and educational activities.

As the virus subsides, Lanier’s loons head home With the virus winding down, the saddest part of the coming summer season on Lake Lanier is that the beautiful loons who have been here throughout winter and spring will soon disappear until next fall.

With the possible exception of bird watchers, it wasn’t until the movie, “On Golden Pond,” that most people ever noticed loons.

These mysterious visitors from the North start showing up around mid November and remain until late May. For those unfamiliar with this magnificent waterfowl, here are some important facts: The common loon can fly nearly 60 miles per hour, swim faster than most fish, can remain under water easily for five to 10 minutes and their haunting song penetrates the morning fog on the lake like the beam of a powerful searchlight!

Loons are divers that are normally 24- to 40-inches in length and have an elongated body and sharp, pointed bill. They are strong swimmers that propel themselves when diving by using their radically webbed feet.

Their legs are attached far back on their bodies, a characteristic that permits ease of movement when swimming, but causes great difficulty when attempting to walk on land.

Loons are unique among living birds because their legs are encased within the body all the way to the ankle. They are great fliers, but become airborne only after an extensive run along the top of the water.

In keeping with their uniqueness, loons rarely live or feed in areas that have been polluted by the extravagances of man.

These gorgeous creatures are also very family-oriented and always mate for life. Often, we at

Lanier are privileged to observe parts of their courtship, but they fly back to their homes in Canada, Alaska or other extremely northern areas of our country before actually laying eggs.

These northern nests are placed on uninhabited land near the water’s edge or on small islands. Usually two eggs are laid, and both sexes take part in the incubation of the eggs and eventual care for the young. In fact, both the mother and father loon can often be seen carrying the young chicks on their backs while swimming.

When the loons first return to Lake Lanier in November, both males and females usually appear rather drab with lots of white showing around their heads from the recent summer molt. As they feed throughout the winter, the color and sheen starts to return to their feathers. Before the loons depart, the male’s head becomes almost jet black, and both genders grow a colorful, iridescent, green band of feathers around their necks.

oped a warm feeling for these interesting birds from the cold North. As a guide on Lanier, bird watchers often hired my services to locate, study and photograph our transient loon population.

Seeing the virus departing is a happy occasion, but it will be sad going out on Lanier in the morning mist and not hearing the familiar high-pitched, lonely song of a loon.

Nevertheless, I know that people will come out again and enjoy the summer boating … and as always, when the lake settles down with the cool breezes of late fall, the loons will again return to fill my senses with their unique presence and haunting song.

Health of Lanier real estate market during pandemic

By Bev Knight You might be surprised to hear that the Lake Lanier real estate market is still going strong. Even though we lost three or four weeks when we were required to shelter in place, there have been 79 lake home closings through May 15th.

That’s only four fewer than 2019 which was a banner year.

The metro-Atlanta market is also thriving, especially in certain parts of the city.

The good news for sellers is that home prices continue to rise due to the very limited inventory.

The average lake house is selling for $650,269, an 11 percent increase from the same period in 2019. The number of days on the market has decreased from 103 in 2019 to 77 this year.

That is a very quick turnaround and a clear reflection of the competition created by the low levels of homes for sale.

Our Atlanta neighbors are enjoying similar trends. For you luxury homeowners, twice as many homes over $1 million have sold compared to last year at this time. Three years of a strong economy have had a positive impact.

While this is good news for

sellers, traditional logic would indicate that buyers are being priced out of the market; however, the interest rates are so low, their buying power remains high.

Just a quick warning to buyers, the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 crisis has forced lenders to raise their requirements for loans, especially jumbo loans (over $510,400). As always, it’s important to line up your financing before you go house hunting.

You don’t want to fall in love with a house you can’t afford.

Real estate is considered an essential business in Georgia with some restrictions. A fair number of at-risk homeowners have understandably taken their houses off the market. This has severely limited our inventory even more.

Many owners of homes that remain for sale require lookers to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and take other precautions for showings. Agents are using wipes and gloves to open houses and turn on lights. Many are offering virtual showings via FaceTime and even virtual open houses. Almost all are practicing social distancing, so life goes on.

In normal times, many of the people who look at lake homes are just “someday” buyers trying

to learn the market. Those who venture out during a pandemic have their checkbooks in-hand, literally. If you shelter in place for two months, it is human nature to want a better shelter. Why not choose beautiful Lake Lanier just north of Atlanta?
