Conference center a possibility at Lanier Islands

By Pamela A. Keene The possibility of building a conference center at Lanier Islands is one step closer to reality.

Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, the state group that oversees Lanier Islands, approved the issuance of $4.5 million in bonds to begin a study, assessment and possible designs for a conference center at the resort.

“This first phase will include hiring an agency to study the market feasibly of a new conference center,” said Bill Donohue, LLIDA executive director. “We will also be evaluating the project and possibility studying some design concepts as part of the process.”

Currently, one hotel/conference center – Legacy Lodge – operates at Lanier Islands. The former PineIsle Hotel, the island’s original hotel property, opened in the mid-1970s and operated through 2005. In the late 1980s, a second hotel was built as Emerald Pointe Hotel and Conference Center.

The island’s infrastructure has been upgraded; a 350,000-gallon water treatment plant opened in 2010 at the cost of $15 million. The management company has improved roads, bridges and sidewalks. It opened Sunset Cove in 2010; LanierWorld opened in 2011.

LLIDA was formed in 1962 to develop, operate and maintain the islands for recreational purposes as a sub-lessee from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR is the direct lease holder from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Boat Shop comes to Browns Bridge Road

By Pamela A. Keene Ben Studer’s nearly 18 years in the boating business started with a degree in marine technology from North Georgia Technical College when he was not quite 20 years old. Now 37, the Gwinnett native spent his youth camping and fishing with his family on Lake Lanier.

When the economy took a dive in 2007-08, Studer decided to go out on his own and opened a boat repair business on Lake Burton called The Boat Shop. He’s had the shop at Lake Burton since spring 2008. “Business was good up there, but I was really getting tired of commuting to Lake Burton for the shop,” he said. “Now that the lake is up and the economy has come back, it was time to open a location on Lake Lanier.”

The certified marine technician opened Lake Lanier Boat Shop late last summer on Browns Bridge Road, close to Port Royale Marina. He also decided to keep the business at Lake Burton open because he has a solid base of customers.

At 5,000-square-feet, Lake Lanier Boat Shop offers sales and service with a custom stand-up paddle board shop. It’s a dealer for Centurion and Supreme ski and wake boats, plus Hampton and Landau pontoons and Alumacraft fishing boats.

The retail store also sells Bote Boards, one of the leading brands of stand-up paddleboards in the country.

The Boat Shop offers detailing and customization services, including stereo upgrades, interior and underwater lighting and Fish Master T tops. “What makes us different is that we offer 5-star service and will pick up and drop off boats for our customers,” Studer said. “Also, we have great relationships with our clients and work with them to do routine and preventive maintenance to keep their boats in top condition. As a service-based company, service is our backbone,” he said.”

Crappie fishing For the avid crappie fishermen who don’t mind dodging the increasing traffic on the lake, crappie fishing remains good. The early morning bite is good to excellent, from 30 minutes before daylight to about 9:30, longer if cloudy. Target deeper docks with structures below the surface, especially if you can find a dock with a sizeable brush pile just outside it, which is an added bonus.

Consignments

The docks that are producing have 20- to 30-foot depths, and are closer to the main creek channels. With this condition, these fish have the best of both worlds – the cover of the brush pile, then the shade of the dock during the middle of the day. If you can find a dock with an active beaver, that is even better, as fresh vegetation is continuous. Look for limbs and branches sticking out of a dock.

Also target submerged brush piles in at least 20 to 30 feet of water.

Fish the brush pile from all angles. This time of year, the fish are holding tight on the brush.

Before you leave a spot, ease up slowly on top of the brush pile and try vertical jigging.

Soft body, hair jigs and minnows are all working well. Because the fish are deep, the

sensitivity of the bite seems less, so watching your line is very important. If you see or sense any unusual movement, set the hook!

For the night owls, bridge fishing is picking up. The sign of a good bridge is if you see dangling ropes from above. That typically means it is being fished by regular night fishermen. You will need a fishing light, and it can easily take an hour or two for the light to draw the bait and the bait to draw the crappie. So be patient, stay safe on the water, and wear your life jacket!

Faith, hard work spell success for Bait Shack Marine

By Pamela A. Keene Brandon Dockery told his father that he wanted to be a farmer when he was 10 years old, explaining that he would go to church on Sundays. The advice his father gave him back then is still with him: “As long as you put the Lord first, you’ll be a success.”

Fast-forward to two years ago. When Dockery, who was working in marine service, had the chance to purchase his former employer’s customer base he stepped up. About that time, he was able to sublet one of the buildings that formerly housed Bolling Bridge Marine on Ga. 53, moving into the building in 2016 and starting out by offering only service on boats and motors.

He said that the first three months the service business was open, he had no electricity. “We worked in the dark using generators,” he said. “And I worked harder than I’d ever worked before, because I was going to make this work.” In late summer 2017, the rest of the space opened up and he expanded the business into boat sales, taking over another of the three buildings on the property.

Bait Shack Marine sells Lowe aluminum fishing boats and pontoons, Bass Cat and Phoenix bass boats. “The fisherman is the one who puts food on the table, so that’s our customer,” Dockery said.

vice sales and service business and his wife Benẻ works with him. “Without her, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. He currently has three employees, “but we’re always looking for more people to work with us who have a good work ethic, are dependable and teachable.”

Business has been strong and steady. “It just all worked out that I was ready to go into business for myself and everything else came together,” he said. “I’m a spiritual person and believe in a higher power.

I really prayed about what to do when my old boss asked me to tie up loose ends for his business. “My mind went back to what I told my dad and with the help of the good Lord, that’s what we’re leaning on.”

Music, food, beer, corn hole and boats converge at Lake Lanier Olympic Park June 9 for the fourth annual Lake Show concert. Solo reggae performer Mellow Steel and the 12-piece band Atlanta Funk Society highlight festivities at the lakeside venue that originated with paddling and rowing.

Percussionist Nicholas D. Mohan will set the laid-back party scene with steel drum beats from his native Trinidad & Tobago and creative new sounds.

In my 60 plus years of sailing, I have had people go overboard three times. Each time they have only been separated from the boat for a minute of two, but the experiences have been harrowing enough that I don’t want to repeat them. So each time we have new passengers aboard I explain that Rule No. 1 is STAY ON THE BOAT! Following that rule, I go over “One hand for the ship, one hand for yourself,” lifelines, hand rails, life preservers etc. Then I review what to do if someone does go overboard. (I do this keeping in mind that I might be that someone). Some people feel intimidated by this but I’d rather have a funny story than a disaster.

I remember one time when we had a party cruise on my old 35 foot S&S Weekender. We were coming into the harbor sailing thru the mooring field, when one of the passengers up forward got up and started unsteadily walking aft. I called “Hang onto something, Wally” about two seconds before he tumbled over the leeward side.

her in no time at all. Now Paula was a BIG girl, and didn’t really need the life preserver as she had enough buoyancy to float at about waist level. But the water was cold and we wanted to get her out ASAP. We got the rope ladder over the side but she didn’t have the upper body strength to pull herself up, and we couldn’t haul on her arms without hurting her.

As I was figuring how to rig a sling to the main halyard, we ran aground on a sandbar.

Now she really freaked out, but since the boat only drew three feet of water, I yelled “Paula, put down your feet and stand up,” which she did to laughter all around. Two of us hopped over

the side and boosted her back aboard to warm up in the cabin.

Then we pushed to boat off the sandbar and sailed back to the marina for Irish coffees all around.

Being thankful for a quiet spring I was not sure what to expect this severe weather season across north Georgia. As it turned out, we had one of the quietest in recent memory with one tornado day in north Georgia. As we approached late April into May, when the majority of the country’s severe storms are likely across the nation’s heartland, again, there was nothing much to see. Tornado season across the plains was very quiet compared to what we have seen over the past several years. I think we can attribute that to all the cold stable air that covered much of the country through much of April and May. From 1991 through 2015, the average number of tornadoes for Georgia each year is 29. We had eight statewide. You will get no complaints from me. From here on out, we deal with pop-up afternoon thunderstorms with an occasional squall line.

Late last April through the first couple of weeks of May, the weather, as you know, was gorgeous. We had lots of sunshine, little rain, and pleasant temperatures, except for a few 90 degree days in early May. Then when the school year was winding down and the kids were scheduled for outdoor activities and field days, a huge surge of tropical air poured into the Southeast with torrential rains and an occasional lightning strike. I just could not believe the timing. Area teachers emailing me all day long for the forecasts could not believe the timing either.

Officially, summer beBurns gins Thursday, June 21st at 6:07 am. June 1st is Lanier also the beginning of Outlook hurricane season. There are many predictions that we will have an above average number of named storms this year. There are also some who believe El Nino, along with an increased area of Sahara dust coming off the coast of Africa, may inhibit hurricane formation in the Atlantic. We really don’t have to worry much this month about Atlantic hurricanes. This time of year, the Gulf of Mexico is the breeding ground for tropical systems. All area lakes are in great shape, thanks to our late spring rains. My concern is that with the so much tropical air in place to early in the summer, will we see a potential major flood event where lake levels cannot be drawn down quickly enough prior to a storm? Through much of late May it has felt like July.

Moisture coming from deep in the tropics seems to be relentless, much more so than I have seen in a number of years. It is concerning, to say the least. My hope is that El Nino will kick in early and we see the wind shear associated with this Eastern Pacific ocean cooling take its toll on developing storms. Time will tell, as it always does.

What is Safe Speed, Navigation Rule 6?

This article begins a series on the navigation rules for operating on the water, regardless of location and the type of vessel you command.

The primary objective is to provide easy to understand information to recognize hazards and avoid collision with another watercraft or other maritime hazards, such as grounding. Rule 6 is the foundation, the beginning point, where everything connects to this specific issue, also known as Collision Avoidance.

The Navigation Rules of the Road are considered by most mariners, one of the hardest things to learn.

At first glance, it does look like an extreme amount of information to digest. It’s a matter of perspective, how you look at the 38 International and 11 Inland Differences specifically created for safety on the water. Observing the mathematical equation; Distance = Speed x Time, it is apparent that reducing your speed has a profound and mostly positive effect on other factors in the formula.

machinery and milling equipment to protect it. Some of it is now in storage; the wheel and flume are being restored by a company in North Carolina.”

The original wooden wheel was replaced in the mid-1930s with a metal wheel. “They used an A Model truck to bring it here,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds is quick to point out that the mill was powered not from the flow of the water from the nearby North Oconee River.

“The mill was powered by the weight of the water that fell into the 1.25-square-foot metal pans

around the wheel,” he said.

“That’s about 75 pounds of water in each pan. The wheel, at 28 feet in diameter, could produce 11 horse power.”

One side or the other The site is geologically significant because it’s located close to the Southeastern Continental Divide.

“The water on one side of the ridge flows into the Chattahoochee and Chestatee and on down into Alabama and that Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint Basin. The water on the other side flows in the Savannah River Basin. “Two rivers going in opposite directions make it both geographically and geologically important.”

In early 2018, Hall County was able to purchase approximately 96 acres of land adjacent to the mill through a $300,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and funds from Hall County impact fees.

The land abuts Ga. 365 and falls under the county’s greenspace area.

Spring underneath mill named for legendary train robber

By Alan Hope Look closely at the creek side base of Healan’s-Head’s Mill and you’ll see a small stacked-rock structure with water running from a tiny pipe.

The water is coming from a spring that runs under the mill.

So why is it named Bill Miner Spring?

Miner was a legendary stage coach/train robber who began is robbing ways in the late 1860s.

He is credited with the phrase, “Hands Up!” and he robbed stage coaches and later trains from California to Canada to eventually – in 1909 – Gainesville. His “career” lasted some 30 years.

Locals in the East Hall area have said Miner spent the night at this spring prior to robbing a Southern Railway passenger train headed to New York. The

incident took place a short distance away from the spring.

Garland Reynolds, who cochairs the non-profit Healan’sHead’s Mill Historic Trust, visited the mill a number of times as a young child. He said the spring “ran through the mill’s lower level, causing the dirt floor to always be muddy.”

“Sometime in the mid 1930s, a porch was constructed over the spring hiding it from view and use,” he said. “Last year, after removing the old, rotten front porch, we captured the water from the spring and ran it out” to spill into the newly-built rock structure.

As for Miner, he was captured a few days later in Lumpkin County and would be sent to prison in Milledgeville, Ga. Even though he was in his early 70s Miner escaped (something he did

several times during his life of crime) but was captured after wandering through a swamp for several days. He died a short time later after his recapture.

His tombstone reads: Bill Miner, The Last Of The Famous Western Bandits, Died In The Milledgeville State Prison Sept 2, 1914.

Part of the plan for Healan’sHead’s Mill is to have public access and possibly be a passive park with hiking trails and conservation space. The public comment period should be late this summer.

Four step process The Healan’s-Head’s Mill Historic Preservation Trust has outlined four phases for implementing the restoration and future uses. Phase 1 included stabilization of the structure. Phase 2 involved the purchase of land surrounding the site. Phase 3 will focus on renovating the interior of the mill and restoring the functionality of the wheel and mechanical operations. Phase 4 will feature the completion of the project.

“We envision a heritage and visitors center here,” Massey said.

“It will become a gateway to Hall

County, Gainesville and Atlanta for people traveling from the north and for people coming up from the south, it will bring people through here to the mountains and North Georgia.”

Pull Marine and Pull Boat Sales relocate to Browns Bridge Road

When Pull Marine and Pull Boat Sales leased a 15,000-square-foot building to expand business on Browns Bridge Road in Cumming, it was a homecoming of sorts. “We built the building in 2000 to be a boat store and we operated the Fountain Boat Dealership out of there for a while,” said Jimmy Barton, who still owns the building with R.D. Adamson. “Now, since Jenny and Perry have come along its back to its original purpose.

Jenny and Perry Serwitz own Pull Marine, Pull Boat Sales and Pull Watersports, which began as a retail store on Keiths Bridge Road selling watersports gear. “It really grew out of our love of watersports,” Jenny said. “I grew up skiing and our family has always been involved in wakeboarding and related sports. We started out with a retail pro shop in 2011 and really didn’t intend to leave our corporate jobs, but now, here we are.”

With Perry’s background in advertising at Fox Sports and Jenny’s work in marketing as a manufacturer’s rep for consumer products, the couple had the right

By 2014, they took on the Tige boat line, giving them even more visibility among the watersports community. Other boat lines followed, and they opened Pull Marine, the service division, last August. All three business lines – watersports, boat sales and marine – operated out of the building on Keiths Bridge Road.

“We found the building by chance and it’s perfect,” Jenny said. “It’s less than two miles from our pro shop/retail store and it’s 15,000-square feet so we have

plenty of room for our showroom and our service center.”

Pull Boat Sales can showcase as many as seven boats in the showroom. The 10,000-squarefoot service center can accommodate more than 12 boats in the service bays. Eric Gallaspy owns and manages the service center.

“As far as we can tell we have the largest service center under one roof, at least in Northeast Georgia,” Perry said.

The lure of the raft is expected to unleash some creativity and fun on Lake Lanier June 9 in the first Flotilla Raft Race at Don Carter State Park. Participants will paddle their own floating creation from the boat ramp to the beach in the event organized by AmeriCorps volunteers working with the park staff.

Take a Hike to celebrate National Trails Day; enjoy free fishing at parks Those wanting to head into the woods for their first hike ever or those with wellworn hiking shoes have opportunities to share the trails June 2 in numerous organized treks at Georgia State Parks near Lake Lanier.

Georgia parks will celebrate National Trails Day with easy guided ventures into wildflower-studded forests, along rushing water, and on historic rural paths. A leisurely stroll at Moccasin Creek State Park near Clarkesville reveals late-blooming woodsy gems. The rushing water of Duke’s Creek near Helen refresh the spirit in a short walk at Smithgall Woods State Park. Tread along the Chattahoochee River for a look at what brought early settlers to North Georgia at Hardman Farm Historic Site.

For the more adventurous, head out to Tallulah Gorge State Park for a three-miler on the High Bluff Loop Backcountry Trail.

Hike through the woods to Helen and back on a six-mile round tripper at Unicoi State Park. Take off at dusk to hear screech owls, frogs, katydids and other night creatures on the wetland loop at Smithgall Woods.

Attract birds, bees and pollinators during National Pollinator Week June 18-24 Without the birds, the bees and other pollinators, we earthlings wouldn’t have the diverse foods that we enjoy. Pollination accounts for the successful production of fruit and vegetable crops around the world.

Each June, the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign, www.pollinator.org, spearheads National Pollinator Week each June. This year the event takes place from June 18-24 through more than 170 events across 42 states, Puerto Rico and Canada to draw attention to the importance of pollinators.

“More than 75 percent of all crops require natural pollination,” said Dolores Savignano, climate change coordinator with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Fisheries and Habitat Conservation. She encourages people to make their landscapes pollinator-friendly.

Honeybees enable the production of at least 90 commercially grown crops in North America, according to a White House fact sheet. Globally, 87 of the leading 115 food crops are dependent on animal pollinators, the fact sheet noted. It said pollinators contribute more than $24 billion to the U.S. economy, with honeybees

responsible for more than $15 billion of that through their vital role in keeping fruits, nuts and vegetables in our diets. Native wild pollinators – such as bumblebees and alfalfa leafcutter bees – account for the balance.

“Finding plants that attract natural pollinators to your landscape can encourage the continued populations of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and even some birds,” said Chris Heim, district manager of residential and commercial services with The Davey Tree Company. “Native trees are always a good choice, such as native oaks, red buds and Southern magnolias. By adding these trees to your landscape, you’re encouraging pollinators and providing shelter for wildlife.”

Heim said that the best time to plant trees and shrubs is in the fall, when the temperatures are cooler, and the plants are approaching dormancy. “You will have more success when you plant in the late fall,” he said.

“Plus, it’s important to prepare the planting site by incorporating organic materials and digging the hole about two times wider than the root ball. Be sure to untangle any roots that have become twisted and confined, so that they will more naturally grow into the soil. Be sure to keep new plantings adequately watered.”

For instant color and long-lasting rewards, blooming summer perennials are excellent selections to create a pollinator habit. Area nurseries and box retailers sell cone flowers, cardinal flowers, blanket flowers and lantana that will come back year after year with little or no maintenance, other than clean-up in the winter.

In the meantime, if you’re serious about attracting pollinators, here are some tips from the US

Department of Agriculture/Forest Service: • Consider plants with a range of bloom seasons from spring through fall. Include both daytime and night-blooming species.

• Pollinators more easily find plants in clumps rather than single plants. This also makes caring for your garden easier.

• Choose native varieties of plants rather than their “prettier” hybridized relatives.

• Mix in annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs and trees.

Check with your area’s extension office or a Master Gardener for a list of the best natives to plant to attract your region’s pollinators. Keep in mind that some may be considered weeds in your

area.

Provide a water source for pollinators. You can put a bird bath directly on the ground or install a drip irrigation line. Add a bit of salt or wood ashes to the damp area.

Do not remove dead trees or branches. They may become attractive nesting options for bees.

Avoid using pesticides. If you must use them, read the label for the least-toxic to wildlife. Spray at night when bees are not active.

Lanier resident’s lighthouses mimic the real thing June 2018

By Pamela A. Keene Steven Stull likes to work with his hands. For most of his life so far, he’s been involved in building things. As a teen, he worked on cars, mostly classic models. “My first car was a Stingray ’65 fastback that I bought from my high school general business teacher,” Stull said. “Ever since then, I’ve had a love of cars and doing fabrication work. Over the years, I’ve probably owned about 30 cars.”

Today at his lake house on the north side of Lake Lanier, he’s still making creations. His company, SWS Enhancement Systems Inc. fabricates displays for medical and health care trade shows and conventions. He is known for designing and building anatomical medical trainers that are used in teaching and exhibitions. He travels throughout the year.

When he’s home, he’s still working, but this time, he’s doing his own models and fiberglass fabrication. “I really like building scale light houses,” he said. “I have already produced replicas of the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the one at Bodie Island in South Carolina. I have blueprints of the

lighthouses have about a 3-foot footprint. He suggests that they be installed on a flat platform with rocks around the base.

His home is filled with nautical décor that he created over the years. A former garage has been converted to a bedroom/sitting room with a wall of four bunks beds designed to look like they belong on a cruise ship. The master bedroom’s headboard is a gentle wave formation made of ledger stone with LED lighting.

Another bedroom, called the Dock Bedroom, features a bed with rope-wrapped dock posts on the corners of the frame.

Registration opens for Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run set for July 19-21

By Pamela A. Keene Get your groove on in the name of charity by registering now for this year’s Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run. Slated for July 19-21, the popular event will be headquartered at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands.

The event, celebrating its 10th year, raises funds for children’s charities in North Georgia, including Camp Twin Lakes, Camp Sunshine, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and Edmondson-Telford Center.

“We’re expecting another great year,” said Barkley Geib, president of the all-volunteer Lanier Partners of North Georgia that also presents the lake’s annual Parade of Lights each December. “We’re hoping to have more than 300 boats participate this year. Right now, we’re ahead of pace over last year.”

Premier Surfaces is the 2018 presenting sponsor. The poker run format will be similar to the 2017 event, with a Thursday

evening meet and greet on shore adjacent to the Wave Pool under the Pavilion Tent.

“Cheeseburger on Paradise” has moved ashore to Paradise Beach at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands on Friday. Chefs will be cooking burgers and hot dogs for participants and for anyone who purchases a LandLubber package for the poker run.

“Friday’s Cheeseburger party will feature the AVC Stereo Challenge,” Geib said. “And the Captain’s Meeting takes place that evening at the Pavilion Tent.” Silent and live auctions are part of Friday night’s activities.

Saturday begins with an open start. “Boaters can go to the various checkpoints at their leisure and then bring their hands to the Saturday night event and awards party,” Geib said. “The whole evening will be capped off by fireworks.”

Local boating safety club helps ‘Dunkirk’ PFDs save lives in Congo

When Eric Ringwall, the current commander of the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron/Atlanta’s Boating Club, initiated the group’s honorary membership program this year, little did he know he’d be connecting people from around the world in a life-saving mission.

“When I asked Captain Mike England from the Georgia DNR to join us as an honorary member, he took a look at our website and found out about our life jacket program of donating PFDs to workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” Ringwall said. “All of a sudden, doors opened, and we were able to put these life jackets to good use on the other side of the world.”

Captain England had accepted the life jackets from a film industry contact in hopes of using them for the statewide SPLASH watersafety program, which was initiated in 2017, but there was a hitch. The PFDs had been used in the blockbuster hit, “Dunkirk,” and they weren’t US Coast Guard approved. “They had been designed to European specifications, so we could not use them

Kids fishing events typically take place at locations with lots of fish and high catch rates, and many events have on-site volunteers to provide assistance for those new to fishing, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

“Right now is the prime time to build life-lasting memories with friends and family – don’t let time get away from you,” says Matt Thomas, Chief of the Fisheries Management Section. “Kids fishing events are a great place to begin, as there are organized volunteers that can help you and your child get a feel for fishing before trying to ‘tackle’ it on your own.”

Research shows that most peo-

ple are introduced to fishing by a family member, and most consider a family member to be their best fishing friend.

Kids fishing events are sponsored across the state and provide fishing assistance to both children (under age 16) and parents from knowledgeable instructors. The Wildlife Resources Division cosponsors many events by providing channel catfish or trout to improve fishing, educational materials for participants and guidance for sponsors.

Helping keep Georgia wild just got easier. Wildlife lovers can now donate online to the Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fund, dedicated by state law to conserving and protecting Georgia wildlife.

The recent addition to www.gooutdoorsgeorgia.com allows users to donate a set amount or round up license purchases and renewals, with the extra going to conservation.

There’s even a $15 Keep Georgia Wild package. It bundles a $10 donation with a oneday hunting/fishing license.

(Licenses not only provide sporting privileges and access to state wildlife management and public fishing areas, they return for Georgia wildlife work a greater share of federal excise taxes paid by hunters and anglers. A $5 one-day license is worth the $5 fee plus an estimated $45 in excise taxes.)

Contributions are critical to restoring and protecting rare and other wildlife, from loggerhead sea turtles to southeastern American kestrels. This work led by the Georgia Department

of Natural Resources’ Nongame Conservation Section depends mainly on grants, fundraisers and direct donations.

Nongame refers to the 95 percent of native Georgia species not fished for or hunted. Rare native plants and natural habitats are also a focus of the fund.

Nongame Conservation Section Chief Jon Ambrose said these animals, plants and places are part of the state’s heritage and key to Georgians’ quality of life.

“These are precious, finite natural resources that Georgia citizens want to conserve and pass on to succeeding generations.”

It takes only a few clicks to turn a fascination with species such as gopher tortoises, goldenwinged warblers and Georgia aster wildflowers into support that helps them survive and even thrive.

Design inspires me. Design inspires me because it is a way of connecting with people and creating functional and organized space. Design is a mode of solving problems, an art form, and a way of bringing a home together.

Some people may be inspired by a color or a style or a piece of furniture or artwork. Whatever your design inspiration may be, it helps make your house a home. Maybe you’re not sure exactly what your style is. Let’s take a look at some options.

There are an endless number of design styles out there, from traditional to eclectic to contemporary and everything in between. Finding your style involves an understanding of the differences and understanding what “feel” you want to give your home. Some differences between design styles are subtle, while others are apparent. Traditional, transitional, and contemporary styles tend to be the most popular when it comes to interior design.

Traditional style has its roots in 18th century English, 19th century neoclassic and French country and British colonial revival. The traditional style is still one of the most popular styles today. Traditional

metal frames and may sit low to the ground. It can feel more informal or even stark, when compared to other design styles.

Although these are the three most common design styles, there are many others to consider: art deco, craftsman, mid century modern, industrial, minimalist, bohemian, shabby chic, glam, coastal, etc. These subcategories can fall under one of the three most common styles to a degree or can be combined to create a unique style that’s all your own.

When choosing or deciding on a design style for your home, just make sure you pick something that matches your personality and lifestyle so that it feels authentic.

MarineMax gears up for summer with new hire

By Pamela A. Keene With a new marketing and member relations coordinator on board, MarineMax is kicking it up a notch or two this summer at both of its Lake Lanier locations in Buford and Cumming.

Beth Kendrick joined Marine Max earlier this year and has been making waves ever since. “We’re planning a number of events for the summer,” she said. “With the 20th anniversary of MarineMax this June, we have good reasons to celebrate.”

MarineMax is offering some special events for the public this summer. On June 16, Father’s Day Saturday, Marine Max is partnering with Crest Pontoon Boats for instore seminars and in-thewater demos at Holiday Marina. Women on the Water classes on July 18 and August 15 are offered at no charge.

Taking place at the Bald Ridge Marina store, the sessions will

combine classroom learning and on-the-water instruction. Reservations are required, and space is limited to 10 people per session.

Additionally, MarineMax has planned events for its SeaRay and MarineMax members. “If people have purchased a boat from us, they’re automatically added to our MarineMax list,” Kendrick explained. Anyone who owns a SeaRay boat is a member of the SeaRay Club.

Kendrick comes to MarineMax with nearly 25 years of marketing experience in retail and manufacturing. She moved to Suwanee from Greenville, S.C., four years ago.

She will be handling promotions, customer relations, trade shows, social and print media.

“I am so excited and inspired to be here,” she said. “And the people I’ve met have been wonderful. The boating community has been very welcoming.”

This year the Boys and Girls Club of Lanier was chosen as their 2018 recipient. The club serves 900 children daily. Agents lended a hand to paint, landscape and help organize the club’s facilities. Baby peregrine falcons succumb to cold

Four newly hatched Peregrine Falcons at Tallulah Gorge State Park did not survive a cruel bout of cold weather in late April. “It’s entirely likely they got too chilled,” said Bob Sargent, Georgia Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist. The baby birds, known as eyasses, died in the cold spell that disrupted tender new life in the gorge. Temperatures in the mid30s and freezing rain hit the cliffs

where a nesting pair had returned to the rugged high country for the fourth consecutive year. Their first appearance in 2014 marked the first time in nearly 75 years that a Peregrine nest in a natural setting had been confirmed in Georgia. A park ranger spotted the returning female Peregrine in early February. The male was seen shortly after near the same location where they had previously nested. The eggs hatched in

mid-April. The eyasses needed from 35-42 days of feeding and care from their parents to fledge.

Birdwatchers who followed the raptors four years trained binoculars across the gorge in a hatch watch April 9 were saddened by their demise, but hopeful about next year. “Nature is harsh sometimes,” Sargent said.

But, he added the Peregrines will likely return again next February and try again.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

Keeping eye to the sky pays off with thrill for Lanier boater

By Jane Harrison Thirty years of boating on Lake Lanier gave Gary Scott a certain familiarity with the waterscape of Georgia’s largest reservoir. But, he spotted something last month above the water that filled him with newfound wonder: two Bald Eagles feeding eaglets in a nest not far from Lanier Islands Resort.

“The dad came first. He was feeding at least two chicks a fish.

We could see their heads popping up,” Scott said, describing the scene he and wife, Petra, spied in a tall pine tree near the water’s edge. “I thought my wife was going to leap out of the boat.”

The nest is the third or fourth documented on Lake Lanier in three years, said Bob Sargent, eagle survey manager with the Georgia Department of Resources. The nesting pair that Scott reported may be a new couple, Sargent said, or it is entirely possible they are the same pair documented three years ago about a half mile away. Eagles sometimes establish a “back up nest in case their abode falls out of a tree,” he added.

Sargent said Lanier possesses the three-factor formula for an ideal nesting environment. First, Bald Eagles “need an adequate food resource, particularly fish,” which are 70 percent of their diet.

pharetta and a place near Bald Ridge Marina, actually first saw a single eagle above Lanier about four years ago. That thrill hooked him on bird watching from his boat. “I kept my eyes to the sky,” he said, looking for the white heads and broad wings of America’s national symbol above the water. Two years ago, he focused on two Bald Eagles in the same vicinity where he viewed the nesting family last month.

“My wife first said it was an osprey,” Scott said, referring to another large raptor frequently seen around Lanier. Observing the white heads and white underbellies, Scott declared, “That’s not an osprey!”

“We could hear the chicks chirping,” he said. In a couple of return outings, they watched as one eagle hunted and another tended the nest. “I got real excited about it.

They are awesome, majestic birds.”

He reported the nest site to Sargent through the DNR’s website. Sargent said that another observer had actually contacted him about that nest two weeks previously.

“They’re in a tree right by the water’s edge. They picked a really good spot,” Scott said.
