By Pamela A. Keene Have you dreamed of staying on a luxury houseboat on Lake Lanier but didn’t know where to start? Now you can rent a fully appointed houseboat, complete with a master captain, for a couple of hours, a day, a weekend or longer.

“Imagine being on a luxury houseboat and traveling the lake by day and having a place to dock – with all the amenities of Lake Lanier Islands Resorts,” said Bucky Perry, director of operations for the 1,100-acre resort.

“We’re working with houseboat owners to put their boats into our rental fleet, taking care of all the details, and making the boats available for lease to the public.”

The fleet is being housed at the resort’s Harbor Landing. Prospective lessors can go online to check out the selection of boats from 65 to 105 feet in length, viewing lay-

out configurations to select the boat that’s just right for them.

Then they make a reservation for the length of time desired, bring their food and personal belongings and head out to the lake.

“We were getting lots of calls from people wanting to rent houseboats,” Perry said. “We’ve made it just like renting a condo, only you can be mobile on the lake with a captain.”

The Islands rents the houseboats based on the number of bedrooms available in each boat.

Renters can choose to stay at the dock or have a master captain take them on boat rides. Harbor Landing is close to Lanier World and all it has to offer, from water

rides and beach chairs to live entertainment and restaurants. The islands also offers catering services.“We can also shuttle you to anywhere on the Islands,” he said.

“Our pontoon rental fleet is also available so you can rent a houseboat as your home base, then take

out a pontoon to explore the lake.”

The Islands staff is interviewing houseboat owners to become part of the managed fleet. Owners pay the islands a management fee and still have access to use their own boats.

It’s time to get your free vessel safety check When was the last time you got anything worthwhile that was truly free? What about getting something free that could save your life or keep you out of trouble with law enforcement?

The Vessel Safety Check program helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal, state and local recreational boating safety laws, particularly regarding the carriage of safety equipment, and has been around since 1947. It was introduced as a “free” service and remains so today. It also heightens the boaters’ awareness of safety issues through one-onone contact by Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel examiners.

This time of the year, recreational boaters are thinking boating again. Many of these vessels have been in “mothballs” for several months, or more professionally referred to as having been “winterized.”

Now is the perfect time to consider contacting a Coast Guard Auxiliarist who is a qualified “Vessel Examiner” and setting up a time for the safety check. We have 21 certified vessel examiners working on and around Lake Lanier, and our examiners are

Safe boating course set for June 15 Flotilla 29 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Lanier, announces a one-day, seven-lesson “About Boating Safely” course. The course is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 2013.

This course also serves as a PWC certified course for children under the age of 16. This course will be given at the Coast Guard Auxiliary Operations Center, 6595 Lights Ferry Rd., Flowery Branch, Ga., on the left just before the entrance to Aqualand Marina.

until 4:30 p.m. and cost is $40.

Deep structure bass fishing made easy for Lanier fishermen Bass fishing was different during my teenage years. The standard tactic was casting toward any visible object with a lure that looked pretty cool. After all, that’s what everyone else did.

Objects included the usual boat docks along with cypress trees and knees. We had enough action to keep things interesting, especially early and late in the day or when the bass were about to spawn. I didn’t know how much I was missing out on until I started reading articles in magazines and small soft cover books about tournament anglers who caught limits of fish off deep water structures. I decided to give some of these radical tactics a try and it changed my fishing world forever. I still cast to objects for shallow bass at appropriate times and seasons and love the times when a set of polarized sunglasses scouting for submerged objects is the way to go. However, deep structure is where the real action is, especially on Lanier. Although a portion of the largemouth bass population will live in the shallows nearly year round many will frequent deeper haunts. And, of course, the bass population on Lanier is predominately spotted

The reality of this subject is you can find hot spots with a modestly priced unit if you know what you’re looking for. Most of the time you will not see the perfect arches (indicating fish) displayed like the unit you saw in the store.

That demonstration mode represents very ideal conditions. Often fish will appear on the screen as wavy lines or lazy looking arches based on their position relative to the transducer. Much more impor-

tant than spotting fish is knowing how to identify brush piles, schools of baitfish, and submerged timber. Luckily, that’s really easy. All told, these units are very user friendly. If your boat has both a dash and front graph unit, mount the best unit at the bow with the transducer installed on the trolling motor. A special clamp and puck type transducer is available for this.

Focus on points, humps & ‘hollers’ Yes, I know this is old school, but one valuable aid is a good topographic map and knowing how to read it. You can’t make a detailed study of your LCD graph mapping software while on the couch in the evening. A couple of map brands are widely available.

Be sure your map has a 10-foot interval between contour lines. If one was available with a five-foot interval, I would buy it. More contour lines give greater terrain detail. Take a few minutes to study the legend in order to identify old road beds and other bass magnets. Continued from Page 10 great. It pays to focus on ridges, draws, and hilltops looking for brush piles in these areas. The submerged ridges equate to long tapering points. Draws are the “mini valleys” (a.k.a. hollows or “hollers”) between steeper points, and of course, the hilltops of yesteryear have become submerged humps. It’s important to note that closer spaced contour lines indicate a sharp depth change while more spread out lines reveal a gradual drop.

Focus on sharper depth changes such as the ends of points and the sides of humps adjacent to creek channels. Gamefish typically prefer a short migration route from deep to shallow water. Remember that shallow is a relative term and could mean 15 feet deep when you’re offshore. I know of one very reliable hump that rises to about six feet below the surface which is certainly not deep but one side plunges steeply straight into a creek channel. Bass hang close to that spot all year. The sweet spot on a long tapering point may be out near the apex. Don’t overlook any irregularity. Anywhere a channel bend swings in close is a spot worth checking out. Be sure to save these spots in your graph. If you’re not using GPS technology, get a fine point permanent marker to record areas on your map along with notes about each spot such as depth and triangulation information. In fact, I recommend doing this in addition to

saving points in a graph unit. Since lake levels are subject to fluctuation, record depths as if the lake were at full pool. Otherwise it can be difficult to get back on a key piece of underwater terrain.

Recon with electric motor The word “triangulation” was mentioned in the last paragraph. This is a simple technique for pinpointing a location was used by savvy anglers for decades before GPS technology became widely available and affordable. If you don’t own a GPS unit try this. It’s remarkably effective. Once you pinpoint that elusive hot spot, get three reference points. One will be the bottom depth. The other two will be prominent objects on the shoreline which may be close or distant. Try to locate two that are an estimated 90 degrees apart if possible. Prominent landmarks could be taller trees that stand out, homes, dips in the tree line, or anything you can pick up on. Choose the ones you’ll remember easily. After fishing a spot only a couple of times you’ll probably have them committed to memory. It’s a very effective method that will get you to within 10 or 15 yards of a target. A couple of zig-zag passes with your eyes on the depth finder are usually all it takes to find the “spot on the spot.” It’s not as hard as you think to amass a milk run of deep structure honey See Fishing, page 12

Bass fishing is fair to good. Most of the fish are in varying phases of the post-spawn recovery mode. They’re just sort of hanging out and not too excited about any one thing. The good news is that they can be caught. One portion of the spotted bass population is getting aggressive about topwater action. Cast your favorite medium size topwater plug to points near the creek mouths. Nearly any baitfish imitator is apt to draw a strike. Cover as much water as possible being alert for telltale swirls on the surface. In addition to this, some real quality fish are being caught by anglers tossing swim baits and flukes over submerged humps. If you’re looking for another good pattern, try running the reef markers. Finesse style worms rigged on light lead heads and 1/4 ounce in line spinners will draw strikes from these finicky fish. You may want to go old school and toss a chartreuse and pearl #5 Shad Rap to the reef markers. Many a bass has fallen to this presentation. No one is talking about covering these areas with a three-inch grub rigged on a 1/8th ounce lead head but this can be a super go-to bait this time of year. Expect the topwater bite to heat up as the month progresses.

Striper fishing has been good. The textbook pattern of drifting flat lines off points near creek mouths has been he mainstay. Bait up with lively herring and trail these about 100 feet behind the boat. Utilize a small balloon about 10 feet above one bait to keep it relatively shallow while you crimp a decent size split shot about six feet above another live bait. This will give it deeper exposure. When the fish tell you which set up they like best, switch both rods to their favorite. While you can put out more lines, if a topwater school kicks it into high gear several hundred yards away, this could cost you valuable time getting things in order before heading to the action. While you’re drifting live baits, be sure to toss bucktail jigs tipped with fluke type baits toward the points. This discipline will pay off with bonus stripers and spots. As always, early in the month, keep a sharp eye out for surface action and a good topwater plug at the ready. Some anglers are also having success trolling umbrella rigs in the same areas.

Typically, linesides gravitate deeper as the month progresses. But, this long and very cool spring we’ve had this year could prolong the topwater bite. That’s one more intriguing thing about fishing.

Rain delays opening of Don Carter State Park

By Jane Harrison Heavy winter and spring rainfall has slowed construction on Don Carter State Park, located on the northern reaches of Lake Lanier. An opening date has not been set for the first state park on the lake.

Construction is continuing on the 1,000-plus acre park off North Browning Bridge Road in Hall County. Reservations are not yet available and visitors are not allowed while construction is ongoing. The park was originally projected to open by early summer.

The park will offer a large sandy beach with bath house, boat ramps, and a paved multi-use trail for hikers and bikers.

Overnight accommodations include 8 two-bedroom cottages and 48 campsites in two separate

The park is named in honor of Gainesville real-estate executive Don Carter who served on the

In late spring and summer look at the upper to middle part and in the winter think about the lower end of that range. Start out with a map reconnaissance at home. Circle likely areas with a pencil. You can erase these later if they’re a bust.

When you approach these areas on the lake, have a couple of marker buoys beside you on the seat. If you have a console graph unit, idle over structure several times looking for cover such as man made brush piles or submerged timber. Toss a marker overboard the moment you spot a significant object on the bottom.

Now’s the time to shut down the big engine and take a closer look at the spot using your electric motor. If it looks good record the information on your map (again in pencil) and note the depth.

Wind up your marker buoy and repeat this drill in several other places. Then start exploring these spots while holding a fishing rod rigged with your favorite deep water plastic rig or jigging spoon.

If you’re impatient, you can shut down the big engine and make your initial reconnaissance using the electric motor with marker and fishing rod ready. It’s debatable whether the outboard motor actually spooks bass or not, especially on our heavily trafficked lakes. I believe in being stealthy.

Do whatever brings you success.

If you don’t slay the fish on your first visit to a piece of deep structure, don’t give up on it. Try it several times in varying conditions and maybe even different seasons before writing it off.

Some places are better in summer while others shine in winter. A few just don’t seem to attract many fish at any time.

In closing, summer is march-

ing in. Take the time to develop or further refine your deep structure fishing skills. A small amount of effort can put a lot of bass in your boat. Be safe and enjoy the lake!

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE High water, top awards for local paddlers at national collegiate canoe/kayak regatta

By Jane Harrison Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club paddlers competing on the University of North Georgia team helped their squad achieve top awards May 11 in the USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate National Regatta at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue.

Canoeist Ben Hefner was honored as the Best Male Athlete. UNG achieved three awards: best novice men’s and women’s teams and top collegiate team. Hefner, Ian Ross, Chris Miller, Lydia Skolrood, and Kasi Paul were among LCKC paddlers who competed on the UNG team.

Regatta volunteers and officials encountered an unusual difficulty on the lake where low water has previously been a concern. With the lake level two feet above full pool, water covered part of the ramp to the finish tower. The morning of the regatta, LCKC volunteers had to clear the Olympic course of logs and debris that had washed into the channel.

“Having to wade through water to get to the tower is a really great problem to have given the issues with the lake over the past few years,” said Pete Smith, regatta director and LCKC member. “ While we get our shoes wet, we’re thrilled to have water in the lake.” Smith added that having the lake level up was an advantage for the regatta because it made course installation easier. “The only drawback over the weekend was the amount of debris in

The canoe/kayak collegiate regatta is smaller than college rowing championships held on Lake Lanier. The teams are formed by clubs around the country and do not receive a lot of funding, Smith said. Clubs from UNG, Brenau University, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma competed. USACK plans to bring its collegiate championship back to the Olympic Venue next year.

The weekend of May 25-26 presented rowers with sunny skies, warm temperatures and smooth waters at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. Lake Lanier Rowing Club President John Ferriss boasted that Lanier had “the best weather for a major regatta anywhere in the country” that weekend. LCKC athletes chosen to Team USA

By Jane Harrison Six Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club athletes were chosen to represent Team USA at international sprint competitions this season. Tim Hornsby, Chris Miller, Stanton Collins, Cannie Ash, Ben Hefner, and Ian Ross are among those selected based on their performances at the U.S. Sprint Team Trials in Oklahoma City April 26-27.

LCKC Coach Claudiu Ciur said he felt “pretty good” about his team’s placement in World Cup Senior and Under 23 squads, but was disappointed that there are no LCKC members on the junior world teams. “We have a strong senior team that can perform at a high level,” he said. “This is the first time since I have been coaching that we have had no juniors in Worlds.” Ciur has coached with LCKC since 2009.

He said he hopes the strong development program will help fill a “little gap” in the junior group.

Kayaker Tim Hornsby, who competed in the 2012 London Olympics, was back in world competition May 10-12, placing 6th in the Men’s K1 200 meter B Final at World Cup 1 in Hungary and 6th in the C Final of the same event at World Cup 2 May 17-10 in the Czech Republic. LCKC Canoeist Robert Finlayson is also on the national team but did not compete in World Cups. Hornsby has been training in Florida with the Canadian team.

LCKC kayakers Miller, Collins, and Ash were nominated to the 2013 U23 World Team to compete in the U23 and Junior World Championships Aug. 1-4 in Welland, Canada. Canoeists Hefner and Ross were also named to the U23 World Championship team to compete in Canada.

Gainesville/Hall County pledge funding for Olympic venue

By Jane Harrison Gainesville and Hall County officials pledged to provide $300,000 in public funds for improvements to the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. Last month the Gainesville City Council approved $150,000 for LLOV in its 2014 budget. Hall County officials expected to allot the same amount pending budget approval this month.

The money is projected to help pay for a venue manager who would oversee facility maintenance, recruit regattas and other events, seek grant money, and spearhead fund-raising projects. It may also go toward much needed facility improvements such as insulating and enhancing the boathouse and replacing sagging docks which have been in use since the 1996 Olympics.

The Gainesville City Council unanimously approved the expenditure last month. Mayor Danny Dunagan said the city was ready to move forward and do its part to upgrade the facility built to host Olympic canoe/kayak and rowing events on Lake Lanier. He believes the city’s return on the investment will be increased tourism. The tourism industry is

state’s fifth largest employer with a total economic impact of $51.2 billion annually.

Hall County Commission Chair Richard Mecum said the Olympic Venue is a potential “gold mine” that has not been run properly over the years due to “too much politics” and a “lack of leadership” on all fronts.

Both governments have received requests for aid from the rowing and paddling clubs who utilize the facility and some elected officials have publicly supported improving the venue.

Previous annual city and county expenditures have totaled about $60,000 a year in a shared maintenance agreement.

Mecum said that somebody stepped up and essentially convinced government officials that now is the time invest in the venue that is being overshadowed, at least in terms of public support and infrastructure, by waterfront ventures in other cities.

He declined to who say stepped up, but other officials indicate a number of individuals and factors came together to support the investment. He believes it will pay off in additional tax revenue and increased retail and hos-

pitality-related income. Plus, he cited its potential to provide a quality lakeside setting for community events and private rental for weddings, banquets, and special occasions.

Monies collected from the city and county would be appropriated to Gainesville-Hall ’96, the nonprofit organization that originally worked to bring the Olympics to Lake Lanier. The board began reorganizing last month and was accepting nominations for an expanded membership. Nominations were expected to be completed by the first of this month.

It will include members from the Lake Lanier Rowing Club, Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce, Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau, Gainesville City Council and Hall County Commission, plus seven at large members chosen by the board.

He said the prospective manager’s duties will also involve coordinating communications between the agencies with a stake in the venue. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers owns the property, which leases to the city and county, which in turn lease it to Gainesville-Hall ’96. That organization leases it to the paddling and rowing clubs.

Have a safe boating season and remember new laws Boating on Lake Lanier and around Georgia has started in full swing with Memorial Day weekend and the 4th of July coming up. This is when the lake can get as crowded as a Wal-Mart parking lot at sale time. Make sure you have life jackets that fit and are in good condition. Remember the new Georgia boating law requires passengers 13 and under to wear a life jacket (P.F.D.s). The younger group should be easy to get them to comply as P.F.D.s are available with their favorite comic characters on them. They probably will want to wear them at home. The young teens will be another story, with the boys wanting to show their muscles and the girls their new bikinis. The autoinflatable P.F.D.s should solve this.

A boater’s education certificate will be required for those born after January 1, 1998, if they want to take the helm, no exceptions.

With some boating situations I’ve seen, it would benefit everyone to have a certificate. In fact I would advise families to take the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron boating courses.

Not only will it make safe boating easier, but you could get 10 percent off your insurance premium upon proof of completion.

The new boating law also brought down the intoxication limits on alcohol to .08, the same as automobiles. If you are going to drink on board, have a designated Captain. Also remember you are responsible for those on board, their consumption should be monitored so you don’t have a M.O.B. (man overboard) or an accident.

If you are a tubing, water-skier or wakeboard enthusiast select an un-crowded area to do your thing.

One of the most disturbing and aggravating things on the water are those that don’t obey “No Wake Zones.” There are signs for “No Wake Zones” and then as I call it common sense “No Wake Zones.” These could be a raft-up or boats beached on the shore for picnics, boats dead in the water, fishermen, and water sports people climbing back aboard. Lately a poor example has been set by an insurance company’s spokesperson. She is idling in a marina in an old Hydro Dyne runabout; she passes a yacht called “Sea Hag” tied in its slip and then guns the boat. Doing this in a marina will get you a visit from the law, and a ticket. I guess their spokesperson and the board never took a boating education course or their ad

Social media asking, ‘Where’s spring?’

I cannot tell you how many emails and facebook questions I received last month. It was astounding. Everyone wanted to know what happened to spring. It was abnormally cold as we all know. It was not just Georgia, as much of the eastern two-thirds of the country saw below average temperatures. After doing a considerable amount of research, I found it was the second coldest spring on record, after 1975!

The unseasonably chilly air did have a silver lining. We had far fewer tornadoes across the country than average. I know there was the big outbreak with 16 reported tornadoes near Dallas, Texas on May 16th, however the overall numbers were way down compared to seasonal averages. One reason for the lower tornado numbers was the unseasonably cool air that covered much of the country. Tornado outbreaks are the result of “weather wars” between cold air and warm air. There was no “battle zone” and no clash of air masses taking place. That of course, was certainly good news for us and for those that live in the heart of the nation’s tornado alley.

Summer officially begins this month on June the 21st. The Summer Solstice will be at 1:04 a.m. The question of the day now is, will we have an unusually hot summer after the cooler than average spring. The Climate Prediction Center certainly thinks so. It has predicted 85 percent of the country, everyone except the west

‘Baah-ack’ home again, reporting surprises along the way Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.

During our travels this winter season we were pretty much limited to the Intracoastal Waterway.

With our plan to meet with friends along the way this for us worked better than jumping in and out of ocean inlets to make the longer and often, overnight passages.

There were pristine vistas along the 50 or so miles we traveled each day, and a host of quiet evening anchorages where we could enjoy majestic sunsets and glorious sunrises. The anchorages are seldom crowded, and when arriving before dark there is ample time to take the dogs to shore, and to unwind in the cockpit as we watched the sun go down.

Unlike the congested area where we live in Atlanta, we have

• Venue Continued from Page 17 some of the largest competitions at the venue. The annual Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival, more of a multicultural celebration than a sporting competition, brings in nearly 5,000 participants and spectators in September.

Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan said his eyes were opened to the venue’s potential as a tourism destination after he attended last year’s dragon boat festival.

He has mentioned it numerous times in public meetings and interviews. His backing of the venue follows that of long-time vocal supporters and council members Ruth Bruner and Bob Hamrick, who have spoken publicly about its tourism potential. Councilman George Wangemann also has an historic role at LLOV as a record holder for the most jumps in the LCKC Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day. On the county front, Mecum – a former Hall County sheriff – had venue involvement heading up security at the facility.

Commissioner Scott Gibbs, in whose district the venue is located, has also attended and spoken at the dragon boat festival.

Many individuals have been talking behind the scenes for some time about how to revive the aging facility, said Mimi Collins, who chairs the LLOV committee for Vision 2030, an arm of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce engaged in community planning. Collins, whose son

Stanton is an LCKC-trained paddler on the USA Canoe/Kayak national team, said the committee acts as a facilitator between the city, county, and Gainesville-Hall ’96. The entities came together this spring after she initiated meetings between them.

“It seems like there is some positive momentum … it’s exciting to see some activity,” Collins said. LCKC President David Haack and LLRC President John Ferriss also expressed excitement about the pledged funding. “The city and the county have always been there to keep the venue going. This latest round of talks and funding shows that they are both committed to and recognize the awesome potential the venue brings to this community,” Haack said.

Ferriss said similar pledges of support have happened before. “I’ll believe it when it happens,” he said in mid-May, weeks before a county commission vote on the budget. “We don’t want to get our hopes up too high and have them dashed.”

In the meantime, he said the clubs look forward to possibly handing over some duties to a venue manager. Immersed in the stress of preparing for the ACRA regatta, he and LLRC members labored to reattach a dock to an anchor after a rope had been cut, possibly by an angler’s propeller.

“That’s the sort of thing a manager will take care of when the time comes,” he said.

Offshore Powersports comes to Lake Lanier

By Pamela A. Keene Frank Stabilito loves adventure on the land and the water. That’s why he’s opened Offshore Powersports at 6067 Lanier Islands Parkway. He’s starting out selling Veranda luxury pontoons and offering service for Yamaha outboards, plus personal watercraft, motorcycles and allterrain vehicles.

He’s been in the boating business for more than three decades, most recently as owner of Jet Thrust in Lawrenceville, the business he sold in 2010. After selling, he and his wife Joan moved to the south side of Lake Lanier, but he missed the boating business. “I purchased a three-acre tract on Lanier Islands Parkway with four buildings,” he said. “We’re setting up sales and service in three of the buildings and I’m looking for someone to lease the fourth – the 15,000-square-foot former Python manufacturing plant.”

Originally from New York, Stabilito moved to the Atlanta area in 1977. With his boating background, he also raced on the PWC circuit from 1989 through 1994.

“I’ve always owned boats, ATVs and PWCs,” he said. “We decided to start Offshore Powersports to promote family fun, on land and on the water.”

The 20- to 25-foot Veranda pontoons are fully aluminum with stainless accents.

They have luxury seating and lounges, and some have electric bimini tops, changing rooms as well as portable heads.

The store also sells parts and accessories for boating, PWCs, ATVs and motorcycles. It has a service department too.

“We’ll take trade ins and we sell used boats,” Stabilito said. “We’re already getting in Verandas, so come by and see us.”

By Jane Harrison Officials from the Personal Watercraft Industry Association kicked off a national safety campaign May 21 at Port Royale Marina. Hailing Lanier as “the crown jewel of boating in the state of Georgia,” industry association executive director David Dickerson applauded the state’s new boating laws which he said “raise the bar” for safety on Georgia waterways.

Laws won’t guarantee safety, though, Dickerson said. “It takes safety messaging,” he added.

PWIA’s safety campaign aims to spread that message through social media and a “safe rider” pledge. The nine-point pledge outlines PWC safety using the acronym: SAFE RIDER (see box). PWIA officials hope more than 100,000 PWC riders will sign the pledge by July 4.

The University of Michigan men’s crew continued their domination of the club sport, edging out the University of Virginia in the medal count. Grand Valley State, based in Michigan, out-rowed women’s crews from the University of California at Santa Barbara and Perdue to claim the most medals for the women.

The annual championship is for top honors among ACRA clubs, which are university and college rowing programs not sponsored by an institution’s athletic department as defined by the NCAA. Crews from Emory University, University of Georgia and Georgia Tech were among those competing.

Emory fared best of Georgia teams on the water. The Eagles’ Gabrielle Arondel won silver in the women’s single shell and the women’s varsity four claimed fourth, just missing a medal. On the men’s side, Adam Hanif advanced to the grand final, where he finished sixth for the Eagles. The Bulldogs’ Melanie Walters and Whitney McDaniel claimed silver in women’s double.

Ferriss reported that the regatta ran on schedule, utilizing eight lanes on the brimming Olympic channel. Past years’ worries about insufficient water level to race eight lanes were vanquished by heavy winter

and spring rain that put Lanier’s level above full pool. Although the lake had seeped over the bottom level of the grandstands and lapped at the finish tower steps a few days prior to the regatta, it had receded from spectator areas by race day.

County work crews scoured the area to remove debris that had washed in.

A few stray logs that had drifted into the channel were removed by officials and boat drivers monitoring the course. Ferriss reported that one competitor in a singles shell hit a log, slightly damaging the boat.

ACRA officials reportedly said they would like to return to Lanier next year.

“We need to make sure the venue is suitable,” Ferriss said.

One concern he mentioned is Georgia Department of Transportation plans to replace Clarks Bridge later this year. The plan calls for a pedestrian tunnel from the boathouse side of the road to the grandstand side. The under-bridge walkway would cut down on road congestion caused by pedestrians crossing the two-lane rural road during regattas and popular events at the venue.

More than 2,000 rowers and spectators were on hand for the ACRA championship. An additional 100 or so people, including LLRC members, helped run the regatta.

‘Cruising Southern Waters’ exhibit features national marine artists

Keene In an unprecedented event, nearly 100 works by members of The American Society of Marine Artists will be presented by the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville from June 13 through August 17. Coordinated by ASMA member and Gainesville artist Anne Brodie Hill, the two-month Region South exhibition marks the first time that the ASMA has offered a regional show in Georgia.

In addition to the ASMA show, three Georgia artists will also exhibit their work: “Exploring Acadia,” artworks by Debra Nadelhoffer, Dawsonville; “Making Waves,” by artist Judith Surowiec, Dacula; and “Light in the Landscape,” by artist Amanda Carder Lovett, Gainesville.

The Quinlan hosts an opening reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, which is free. The Quinlan is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Lake lovers happy, despite some inconveniences Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Jane Harrison “It’s beautiful!” is the oftheard exclamation of folks gazing upon Lake Lanier’s brimming glory at its highest point since September 2004. The lake that shrunk into muddy banks during ugly droughts the past decade rose over its full pool of 1,071 feet above sea level all of May.

By May 21, lake elevation at Buford Dam was measured two feet above full pool on 12 May days, providing a look at both the aesthetically pleasing and not so attractive effects of Lake Lanier at 1,073.

“I had to change my walk route today,” said Gainesville resident Cari Dobbins, who found the lakeside walkway at Longwood Park submerged by about a foot and a half of water in midMay. The concrete walkway alongside the narrow cove lay completely underwater from the paved sidewalk below one side of the tennis courts to the wooden steps on the other.

ation Director Melvin Cooper said the lake had covered the walkway only once before and that it was not built to sustain levels above full pool. Park staff barricaded entry ways and waited for water to recede to begin clean up.

Flooding of the Gainesville park is one effect that begs evaluation in the wake of public campaigns that support raising Lanier’s official full pool to 1,073. Officials from Lake Lanier Association and Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus are among those who want the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to lift full pool two feet. Gov. Nathan Deal has also spoken about wanting to increase Lanier’s storage capacity.

While many boaters, lakeside homeowners, and marine businesses bask in Lanier’s fullness, others who found water lapping at public walkways and debris scattered at their feet expressed hints of inconvenience; but they were hesitant to say anything negative.

Having endured years of economic hardship, worries about water supply, and difficulties accessing a drought-ridden lake, folks around Lanier seem buoyed by her height and willing to go See Lake Level, page 51

By Jane Harrison Supporters of raising Lake Lanier’s official full pool to 1,073 feet are getting a preview of what that might look like. Despite a flood of rave reviews, there’s more than trickle of concerns about the effects an additional two feet might cause over a sustained time period. Those concerns range from potential closure of public areas, the integrity of a dam built to hold a full pool of 1,071 feet, and effects on the basin downstream.

Several boat docks and public recreation areas were closed when the lake rose to the level sought by the Lake Lanier Association and members of the Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus. Building up shoreline infrastructure to withstand 1,073 would be costly at the local level and beyond. For

instance, raising the submerged walkway at Longwood Park would take “considerable expense,” said Gainesville Parks & Recreation Director Melvin Cooper. Research into just the possibility of raising Lanier’s official full pool could require millions in federal funding.

But, the cost of buttressing shoreline areas to hold a bigger Lanier may be far less than that of building new reservoirs, say 1,073 proponents. Plus, the added volume would increase Georgia’s water supply by 26 billion gallons, according to LLA. It’s definitely something that deserves to be studied now when the level is up, said State Representative Geoff Duncan, from Cumming.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a systematic schedule of public access closures for high lake levels based on prior analyses. It closed three boat ramps and a park walkway when the lake reached 1,073 the weekend of May 11. Chief Ranger Chris Arthur outlined additional closures if the level reaches1,0741,075, about a foot higher than it was in mid May: • Boat ramps at Van Pugh South, Little River, Thompson Bridge, Bolding Mill, Little Hall, Keith’s Bridge, 10-Mile • Parks at Sardis, Little Ridge, Lula, Long Hollow, Simpson, Robinson

Lisa Parker, deputy public affairs officer for the Corps Water Management Section in Mobile, Ala. said concerns arise downstream, also, where other lakes on the swollen Apalachicola, Flint, Chattahoochee river system were more than a foot over full pool.

Parker said changes in level at Lanier have a chain effect on the rivers and on West Point Lake and Lake Walter F. George.

She reported the Corps planned a slow draw down of Lanier to avoid flooding elsewhere. She expected it would hit 1,071 by mid June, pending weather conditions.

Asked if the Corps is studying Lanier at 1,073, Parker responded that such research is currently unfunded. “The rangers out there aren’t going to have the equipment … they’d have to pull rangers from the jobs they’re doing,” she said, adding the Lanier unit is already short staffed. Any future study would cost millions of dollars and would require congressional approval. It would necessitate a basin wide analysis of how an additional two feet in Lanier would impact the See 1073, page 55

with the flow, at least for now.

As level rose to slightly above 1,073, several other public areas had the same watery burial as the Longwood lakewalk.

The Corps closed the West Bank Park walkway when it went under. It also closed boat ramps at Toto Creek, Nix Bridge, and Thompson Creek after water submerged the concrete dividers between lanes, said Corps Chief Ranger Chris Arthur.

At the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue at Clarks Bridge Park, water flooded the lower level of the grandstands and pooled at the first row of seating. On May 11, officials at a small national collegiate canoe/kayak regatta had to wade through water that covered a ramp to the finish tower. But the regatta director was upbeat about the rare difficulty. “While we get our shoes wet, we’re thrilled to have water in the lake,” said Pete Smith, member of the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club.

Two weeks later Lake Lanier Rowing Club president John Ferriss eyed similar conditions three days before a 1,000-plus participant national regatta May 25-26.

“Well, it is a water sport,” quipped Ferriss, sweaty from readying the venue for the American Collegiate Rowing Association national championship. The docks were still afloat. The race lanes were set.

Ferriss said he believed that two weeks of high water had already washed the shore of logs and debris that might damage racing shells and endanger rowers.

“If it had just come up, I’d be frantic,” he said. “I’m glad it’s up,” he said, recalling past regattas when organizers fretted over whether the Olympic channel would have enough water for at least six lanes.

“Now we have eight,” he said.

High water caused a few inconveniences at area marinas, private boat docks and lakeside properties. “Any fluctuation in lake level requires adjustments, said Brad Wiegand, owner of Boat Dock Works. He said his business has picked up as lakeside homeowners seek to improve their docks and permitted shorelines. Although the risen lake has put some shoreline steps and property underwater, the overall impact is positive. Wiegand said people are optimistic about the lake again, ready to invest more in their lakeside properties, and are heading back out on the blue.

Parker pointed out that Buford Dam and dams on the other two lakes were built for their pre-determined full pool.

“Dams were built for a certain integrity level,” she said. Increasing that level might compromise dams’ holding ability, requiring millions of dollars more to keep them operational.

“The 1073 concept is not a no-cost idea,” said Joanna Cloud, LLA executive director.

“We know that there will have to be money spent on infrastructure improvements around the lake and possibly to Buford Dam.” She pointed out that the cost of constructing new reservoirs, including the recently completed Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton and the proposed Glades Reservoir in Hall County, runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Given how expensive new reservoirs are to construct, we advocate, at a minimum, doing the cost-benefit study of the 1073 concept so that, as taxpayers that will shoulder most of

the burden of new reservoir construction, we, and our elected officials, can make an informed decision about how best to increase fresh water storage capacity in our region,” Cloud said.

She added that while the organization does not like to see the use of public recreation areas compromised due to high water levels, photographic documentation of the effects of 1,073 provide a good starting point to determine what sort of investment would be needed to raise Lanier’s pool two feet.

In response to a concern about our push to increase the full pool of Lake Lanier to 1,073 feet: While we don’t like to see public recreation areas and personal property compromised by high water levels, it is very instructive to see what the effects of 1,073 are on the surrounding lake areas.

Those familiar with the operating procedures for the ACF System know that the pressure to keep the flow of fresh water continuing – from parties within Georgia as well as Alabama and Florida – is not expected to ease anytime soon. Nor are we aware of any upcoming revisions to the Endangered Species Act that will substantially change how the Corps and Fish and Wildlife Service operate. Realistically, Georgia needs to increase water supply storage capacity for the future.

That leads to making some choices with taxpayer dollars: Build new reservoirs or increase the capacity of existing reservoirs.

Compared to the known and unknown costs of building a new reservoir, we have a book of knowledge on what the impact of Lake Lanier at 1,073 would be

But what we also know is that no comparably-sized new reservoir is feasible in Georgia, geographically or economically. One of the last reservoirs to come online in Georgia was the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton. It is a 6 billion gallon reservoir, of which only a portion is in the conservation pool and available to be dispatched. I believe the final cost on Hickory Creek was about $100 million, $75 million over original estimates. The cost was higher than projected because of unexpected cost increases that occurred during construction.

Events like Lanier’s current overfull condition provide information about what is needed adjust for a full pool of 1,073. We conducted a survey among our membership, people familiar with Lake Lanier shoreline issues, asking about 1,073 and they overwhelmingly supported the concept. Longtime lake residents may recall we went from a summer full pool of 1,070 to 1,071 in the 1970s, and some adjustments had to be made then, just as would have to be made for 1,073.

But the point is we would gain an extra 26 billion gallons of stored water, 100 percent of which would be in the conservation pool for drinking water or downstream flow requirements.

The cost of adding that amount of water to our existing supply system would be a tiny fraction of the cost of building reservoirs that would be required to even come close to equaling a similar volume elsewhere.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Pirates of Lanier Poker Run filling up fast

By Pamela A. Keene More than 100 boats have already registered for mid-July’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run and slots are filling up fast, according to event organizers.

“All the money we’re raising goes to our three children’s charities this year,” said Rea Williams, with Lanier Partners. “This will be our biggest Poker Run ever and sponsors are coming on board every day. We’ve set our goal this year at $300,000.”

Children’s charities that will benefit from the 2013 Poker Run are Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County, Camp Sunshine and Naval Special Warfare Kids.

For the first time, the event will include a two-day Vendor

Village at Grand Hall at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, featuring all kinds of products and supplies for boaters. For $250, vendors can have a 10 by 10 booth. The Vendor Village is sponsored by the Marine Trade Association of Metropolitan Atlanta.

Other events include a Meet and Greet party on Thursday evening at Gianni’s at Lake Lanier Islands, a lunchtime “Cheeseburger in Paradise” raftup on the lake and a mandatory Captain’s Meeting/Welcome Party at the resort’s Grand Hall on Friday night, plus the main event and awards on Saturday. Antiques in North Georgia will serve as auctioneer; there will also be a silent auction.

Awards include trophies for Best Decorated Boat, Best Dressed Crew, Worst Decorated Boat and Most Patriotic Boat.

“Our one-of-a-kind trophies are the most stunning we’ve ever had,” Williams said. “They’ll blow your socks off.”

• Free fishing days: In the spirit of introducing new family members or friends to the sport of angling, Georgia offers two free fishing days during this special week – Saturday, June 1 and Saturday, June 8, 2013. On these days, Georgia residents do not need a fishing license or a trout license in order to fish.

Residents can fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas. Plus, residents do not need to obtain a wildlife management area license to fish on a public fishing area or on Waters Creek on these two free fishing days.

• Free kids fishing events: In addition to the two free fishing days, free kids fishing events are scheduled across the state during the week to help introduce children to fishing.

These events offer a healthy form of entertainment for kids and provide an excellent opportunity for beginning anglers to learn from experienced volunteers. Many events offer prizes, free lunches and other funfilled activities – so make plans to attend one!

New BUI law in effect statewide

By Jane Harrison Gov. Nathan Deal and law enforcement officials announced a concerted effort on land and water to enforce the state’s new boating under the influence law. The law, which went into effect May 15, lowers the blood alcohol content for BUI to .08 from the previous limit of .10. The new limit for boaters matches that for motorists on Georgia roads.

Drunk driving laws don’t stop at the water line any more, officials said during a media event at Laurel Park in Hall County on the day the law went into effect. Deal and officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol, and Governor’s office of Highway Safety spoke about their united stand against drunk drivers during the event entitled, “.08: Where the Rudder Meets the Road.”

“You will see troopers on the road on the way to and from boat ramps,” said State Patrol Commissioner Mark McDonough, reiterating Deal’s statement that “drunk boating is just as unacceptable as drunk driving an automobile.”

The law evolved in the aftermath of two children’s deaths on Lake Lanier last summer caused by a boater subsequently charged with BUI. Deal thanked the family of Jake and Griffin Prince for their support of the law which was named after the two brothers.

“The law represents the many lives that

alcohol-related accidents have claimed on our waterways and, more importantly, it represents the many others whom this law will save,” Deal said.

Officials cited statistics that alcohol is a contributing factor in more than half of boating fatalities each year. Deal said the BUI law sets the same standard already in place in most states. It’s up to law enforceSee BUI, page 71

Safety tip for June: Know where you are on the lake “All I see is pine trees and an island … ” is the response that some callers give U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers and emergency responders when asked to pinpoint their location on Lake Lanier.

“That could be anywhere” on the 39,000 acre lake, said USCGA Flotilla 29 Commander Pat Lindsey. She added it’s both surprising and alarming that so many boaters do not know exactly where they are on the lake.

USCGA recommends that all boaters have on board the “Lake Sidney Lanier Navigation Charts” and understand how to interpret

the symbols and markers. The 36-page booklet contains detailed maps that show day markers on river channels and tributaries, plus locations of gas docks, boat ramps, power lines, bridges, no wake zones, no ski zones, hazard areas, fish attractors and points of interest.

Lindsey advised boaters to be aware of their vessel’s location in relation to starboard and port day marks.

The Auxiliary provides the chart booklet to graduates of its boater safety course. It is also available at area retailers, marinas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.

St. Marys is the beauty at the end of the road Exploration has always been in my blood, so even when traveling down a dead-end road, I find it impossible to turn around before I discover the mysteries that might manifest themselves at the end.

Therefore, going off the map on Highway 40 into the historic village of St. Marys, Ga., seemed a natural progression.

I found this tiny picturesque seacoast town to be unique, quite lively, historical, and much like Key West, Fla., on a smaller scale. It offers several interesting lodging opportunities, dining establishments that run the gamut for the taste buds, and a bar with one of the most outspoken characters I’ve ever encountered.

To really receive an introduction to the diversity of the St. Marys scene, I would suggest at least one night at the Riverview Hotel built in 1916 and owned and operated by the former mayor, Jerry Brandon and his wife, Gaila. The property has been the home base to such notable people as John D. Rockefeller, Sr., Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Admiral Chester Nimitz, Andrew Carnegie, Governor Eugene Talmadge, Senator Richard Russell, and even weatherman, Willard Scott.

This old hotel is on the waterfront and seems to be a central gathering point for folks headed to Cumberland Island, but is very popular with the local crowd as well. One reason for the success of the Riverview Hotel is their Captain Seagle’s Restaurant that boasts fabulous fresh seafood, great steaks and pasta, and Rock Shrimp, which are historic on this

After a scrumptious dinner, however, visitors need to saunter through the hotel lobby to Seagle’s Saloon for the unforgettable experience of meeting Cindy Deen! Two other eateries in St. Marys are certainly worth your time and money for an evening meal, and these are: Shark Bites (912-576-6993) and Pauley’s Cafe (912-882-3944). Shark Bites has an extensive menu for informal dining with a view of the waterfront from a second level, and the best place for sunsets in the town. Pauley’s Cafe, however, is a small “hole in the wall” restaurant with great Italian cuisine and a unique taste in a very laid back atmosphere.

If you want a more nature inspired stay in a really nice place that evokes a local country ambience, I would suggest Emma’s B&B (www.emmasbedandbreakfast.com) just outside the waterfront area. The breakfast is Southern and simply tasty, the rooms are comfortable and clean, and the owners are very friendly and accommodating.

For those who love the game of golf, it would be hard to find a more picturesque or challenging venue than the Laurel Island Links (www.laurelislandlinksgolf.com) that was designed by Davis Love III and located a short drive from St. Marys. Georgia pines line the perimeters of this course that affords gorgeous visitas of the marshes that abound with waterbirds, geese, and ducks. These are 18 holes that you will fondly remember!

The sleepy coastal village of St. Marys was founded in 1787 and still displays numerous Victorian and Antebellum homes, which can be seen by hiring local guides for a nominal fee. Visiting anglers will find numerous public fishing piers located within several miles of St. Marys. The main catches from these piers are spotted sea trout, redfish, flounder, black drum, and sheepshead. Day trips from St. Marys to Cumberland Island are also available from the waterfront.

Despite recent changes to this

area, St. Marys remains the sleepy fishing village it’s been for more than two centuries. It is a place where the stars seem closer, and the nights are quieter. Time appears to move as slowly as the river. Nevertheless, whatever your interests, wonderful memories will be a part of any visit to beautiful St. Marys!

Boat and swim safely: Corps offers tips The recreation season is in full swing at Lake Lanier following this year’s busy Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer, those lazy humid days where trips to the lake for picnics, swimming and boating are a rite of passage.

We are fortunate that Lanier provides a welcome recreation spot only a few miles from the hustle of city and suburban life.

Every year, however, fun weekend outings turn to tragedy as people unexpectedly lose their lives.

The lake can and should be a fun place for responsible water recreation, but it is crucial to be ever mindful of the drowning risks. With a little preparation and responsibility, we can all increase our chances of a safe and fun summer on Lanier.

Many mariners experience adverse conditions and obstacles underway, none of which as complicated as the scenario of “loss of power.” Absolutely everything that is used in pleasure boating is reliant on it: propulsion, controls, pumps, navigation electronics, communications, and other critical marine systems that need electrical power to properly function, and that sometimes also applies to sail boats.

Planning for that possibility is an important aspect to successful and intelligent boating, especially for those enthusiasts that venture far from nearby lifesaving and towing services. There is a comprehensive list of preparations you should perform before you depart on your trip and highlighted below are just a few items that are recommended you consider.

Trying to not be the mouse around my house The process was so gradual and imperceptible that it was easy for me to not notice the changes.

And not knowing any better, I could hardly be blamed for my fallings. At least that’s what I thought.

But, as is the case with all of my shortcomings, my three daughters keep a running tally of my ineptitude and use it to their advantage. Even though I never aspired to have perfect handwriting in the first place, there was an insistence that my failure with a pencil was somehow destined to ruin their lives.

I never would have thought that such a simple flaw could affect so many futures so completely. I mean, it’s not like I was plotting to set off a nuclear weapon, or maybe conspiring to dry up the Gulf of Mexico. Compared to that, I felt like they were blowing the whole penmanship thing out of proportion.

Once the paramedics got my heart restarted, I noted that she was still standing there with the receipt in her hand, unfazed by my near death experience.

Not only that, but I could almost swear that she had a tail and that it was twitching back and forth.

Some officers will be from the Gwinnett County Police department, which has 25 officers certified for lake duty. In addition, the Hall County Marine Unit plans to expand its two-officer staff with extra personal

As you can see, there’s really more to this business of recreational boating than meets the eye. You can buy and run a boat without training, but it is not a wise thing to do. When the weather is perfect and few boats are on the water, most anyone could operate a boat, but when things are not perfect, and they rarely are, your knowledge and experience can save your life and the lives of your “precious cargo.”
