Gwinnett research on septic tank impact on Lanier only a small sample

By Jane Harrison A $2.4 million three year research project on the impact of septic systems on Lake Lanier will focus on a small sector of the watershed that provides drinking water for millions in North Georgia and metro Atlanta. The collaboration between the Gwinnett County Water Resources Department and Georgia Tech Research Corporation will sample and monitor water and groundwater in and just outside of Gwinnett County, which contains about four percent of Lake and has 640 parcels with septic systems.

In comparison, Hall County contains about 60 percent of the lake and tens of thousands of properties on septic systems. Hall County environmental health and public works officials report no plans for a similar study, but indicated the county has been studying pollution levels for years through a partnership with the city of Gainesville, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties and college researchers. About five percent of the lake is in Dawson County, 30 percent in Forsyth and 1 percent in Lumpkin.

“The water quality, groundwater and sediment monitoring

and/or sampling will be completed in the portions of the lake that are in Gwinnett County, as well as an area immediately outside of Gwinnett, between the county and Lake Lanier Islands and toward the dam,” said Karen Shields, Gwinnett Water Resources Department spokesperson.

Gwinnett’s approval of the study last month came after a state-issued report that portions of the lake fail to meet water pollution standards under the Federal Clean Water Act. A Georgia Environmental Protection Division evaluation to the federal agency in September cited repeated violations within five years of chlorophyll A limits on a lake segment on Browns Bridge Road between Hall and Forsyth counties. Additionally, a Lanier Bridge segment on Ga. 53 was placed on an assessment pending list due to one chlorophyll A violation in a five year span. Chlorophyll A, a pigment in algae, indicates the presents of harmful nutrients that cause excess algae growth, according to the Georgia EPD. The state EPD has proposed reducing nutrient levels, or the Total Maximum Daily Load, that

seeps into Lake Lanier. Failed septic systems, along with stormwater run-off from farms, lawns and pavement, contribute to nutrient loading in lake water.

The Gwinnett research project on the impact of septic systems aims to “assess which strategies may help reduce this nutrient loading, and provide a model the county and EPD can use to predict lake response to remedial actions,” Shields said.

“We are certainly interested in seeing the results of additional research,” said Dale Caldwell, Headwaters Watershed Protection Specialist for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. “While Gwinnett’s study may not focus on the entire lake, it will likely encompass an area with similar land use and associated problems that occur all over the lake. Research is always welcomed when trying to address threats to a waterbody that is as valuable as Lake Lanier is to surrounding communities.”

Caldwell reported by email that CRK has been has been “monitoring Lake Lanier by collecting and analyzing samples for chlorophyll A at 10 different sites around the lake since 2010.” He added that the state samples at the

same 10 sites. “Results indicate that we are not meeting state standards at a few of these sites and failing septic systems are a possible source of several for such nutrient pollution,” he said.

“Failing septic systems can result in increased levels of nutrients and harmful bacteria in nearby public waterways (creeks, rivers, and lakes),” Caldwell noted. He added that when CRK receives reports of failing systems, “we usually conduct sampling just upstream and downstream of suspected areas and test for E. coli.” The results show a significant localized impact and E. coli levels that exceed EPA levels for safe recreation.

But this localized data cannot accurately relate the overall impact on a lake the size of Lanier.

Hall County has no exact count of the number of septic systems it has permitted in the Lake Lanier watershed, according to Kelly Hairston, Director Hall County Environmental Health.

“There was an approximation of 40,000 septic systems in Hall County, however this was an estimate based on available water and sewer account data,” he said.

sailing ship to his nearby library filled with all the Harry Potter novels, World Atlases, dozens of miniature models of Polish Soldiers and an antique barograph for predicting weather conditions.

Robin shared stories about Len, who she met in a restaurant in her native New Jersey long ago. “He was so special,” she said. “He treated everyone he met like friends, but he was also very British and proper.”

Robin said that Len didn’t intend to be a shipwright. “He was going to be a carpenter,” Robin said, “but for his final project, he was assigned to build something out of wood that he’d never built before, so he decided to build a sailboat. At the time, he didn’t sail. His instructor told him, ‘Now that you’ve built it, go sail it,’ and that’s just what Len did. He took it to the water and it was love.”

He worked an indentured apprenticeship for seven years to learn everything he could about being a shipwright, from how to select the best trees for the wood to what went where and how. Then he bought a boat and “decided he was going to go sailing for a while,” Robin said.

“And then he did his first solo circumnavigation with a sextant.”

Along the way, he furthered his education, earning several masters degrees, and adding to his life experiences. “Len didn’t read, he studied,” Robin said. “He was alSee Kirkham, page 12

By Pamela A. Keene Those who knew Len Kirkham were always amazed at how much they didn’t really know. For instance, he raced in the first Whitbread, a roundthe-world sailboat race out of England, in 1973 on the British team. He read everything he could about Winston Churchill and was a student of British history.

He circumnavigated the Kirkham globe several times, in the early days using only his sextant to find his way.

He and his wife Robin fostered youngsters. In the last several years of his life, he traveled the world as a marina consultant, with multiple trips to China and Colombia. And he and Robin shared amazing adventures during the nearly 30 years they were married. They sailed and raced together, they traveled together and shared a love that was evident to all who knew them.

Len Kirkham passed away from a long battle with cancer on December 11. He died at home, just weeks before his and Robin’s 30th wedding anniversary.

“I just thought we’d have more time,” Robin said recently in an interview at their home in Buford as she sat on the sofa with their rescue dog Corky on her lap. She was surrounded by reminders of Len, from the signed Thomas Hoyne lithograph of a

A decision, expected to be made public in June or July 2018, may or may not end the water war between the two states; nor is it guaranteed to stave off future battles between Deep South states that have squabbled over the precious resource for decades.

In the hearing, set for 11 a.m.noon, Florida’s legal representative will present exceptions to a Special Master’s recommendation that justices deny its claims in a 2013 lawsuit.

Special Master Ralph Lancaster concluded that Florida could not prove that limiting Georgia’s water use would remedy Florida’s water woes downstream.

Florida hopes justices will send the recommendations back to Lancaster for revisions. The court usually concurs with Special Masters’ reports; however it occasionally makes exceptions, as it has before in at least one of the veteran court appointee’s cases.

The lawsuit alleges Georgia

hoards water on the ApalachicolaChattahoochee Flint River system and harms Apalachicola Bay’s oyster fisheries, which need fresh water to produce. Georgia officials and Lake Lanier advocates claim the Sunshine State’s desire to cap Georgia’s water use would thwart economic development and threaten the lake’s water level. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the river system that reaches from the Georgia mountains to the Florida Panhandle.

Lancaster based a portion of his ruling on his finding that regardless of a court decision, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could not be bound to change operations of five dams on the river system, thereby providing no certainty that a cap on Georgia water consumption would send more water into Florida.

However, the U.S. Solicitor filed an amicus brief taking exception to Lancaster’s recommendation, stating that the Corps could take a court ruling into account and potentially change operations on the dams after a lengthy environmental study and public comment period.

Justices will also hear testimony from the U.S. Solicitor

General’s office, which filed an amicus brief for divided argument.

The Florida V. Georgia case will be the second water battle of the day to go before justices.

They’ll begin with Texas V. New Mexico and Colorado lawsuit over a water compact which includes the Justice Department’s exceptions to a special master’s ruling.

Court Day Jan. 8 - The attorneys: Florida- Gregory G. Garre, of Lathem & Watkins, former National Law Journal Litigator of the Week and U.S. Solicitor General, has argued 41 cases before the Supreme Court. Georgia- Craig Primis, of Kirkland & Ellis, named “Litigator of the Week” in February from the National Law Journal, which declared him as “winning the water year.” Both are based in Washington, D.C. - The hearing: The court usually allots one hour of argument time for each case, with each side speaking for 30 minutes. Since the Solicitor General requested and was granted time to speak regarding Florida’s exceptions, he or another lawyer from his office, will get 10 minutes to talk. Jus-

tices frequently ask questions or request elaborations during oral arguments. Much of the hearing time is actually dominated by responses to justices’ inquiries. Attorneys generally reserve time from their presentation to rebut arguments from the opposing side.

- The vote: Justices vote on how to decide the case in private conference later in the hearing week. The senior justice in the majority appoints a justice to write the majority opinion; the minority opinion is composed by the senior justice voting on the minority side. Justices writing opinions then share written opinions among themselves, summarizing their reasons.

- The decision: The justices are expected to announce their ruling in open court in June or July.

- Hearing transcripts/oral argument recordings: Written and audio recordings are expected to be available at www.supremecourt.gov. Beginning with the October 2017 term, Heritage Reporting Corporation is providing written oral argument transcripts on the same day an argument is heard. Audio record-

ings are available at the end of each argument week on Friday after conference.

Timeline • Oct. 1, 2013: Florida files federal lawsuit claiming Georgia takes more than its fair share of water from the ApalachicolaChattahoochee-Flint River System and causes irreparable harm to Florida interests downstream.

Suit seeks a cap on Georgia’s water use, equitable apportionment of the waters, and reparations for alleged damages.

• Jan. 31, 2014: Georgia rebuts Florida’s claims, stating that Florida has not presented clear and convincing evidence that it suffered substantial injury as a result of Georgia’s water consumption.

• Nov. 19, 2014: Supreme Court appoints Ralph I. Lancaster as Special Master to oversee evidence gathering and hold an evidentiary hearing to offer recommendations to the court.

• Dec. 1, 2014: Initial telephone conference between the Special Master and counsel for both parties, plus counsel for the U.S. Solicitor General.

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides

Lake level: Down about 5 feet Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temperature: 54 degrees

Bass Fishing Some areas of the lake are still showing signs of turnover - the water quality is mixed throughout the lake - some areas look great, and others not so much.

Some fish have started to move shallower in the ditches.

We have found some good activity in ditches from around 30 feet all the way back to 15 feet or so.

A SPRO McStick has worked well on these shallower ditch fish of late. A Picasso ShakeDown Head with a finesse worm and a Chattahoochee jig are also good options in the ditches when they are not chasing the jerkbait The spoon bite has started to slow a little. We aren't finding as much bait out in the deep timber, which makes sense as more fish are starting to move back shallower in the ditches.

When we are finding the spoon fish, they seem to be more in the 30-50 foot range. Some days they are relating to the bot-

tom near timber, and some days they are in more clean, flat bottom type areas. Some days they are more up in the water column and easier to spot.

When they are down in the timber, rely on your Lowrance 3D Structure Scan to discern the presence of fish. You may not see them well until you hook one, then your display will explode with activity.

Striper Fishing The stripers are biting well for the most part. They are a little finicky on some days and we still have several patterns that are working.

The down line bite is still on, with fish being taken anywhere from 25 to 70 feet. In up lake areas, fish over a 30 foot bottom.

Flats or points are good places to look for fish.

Fishing over the deep bait schools can also payoff. No big changes to note with this technique. Find the bait, set up shop, and if you do not see fish on the

sonar or catch fish in 20 minutes or so, find another school of bait.

Bluebacks have been productive on this pattern, but the small and medium Trout are also good options to keep in the spread.

The Mini Mack Umbrella rig will also produce. Pull them in the backs of the creeks, over shallow humps, or in areas with working birds or surfacing fish. If you are pulling the rig in the creek backs, remember that you may not see many fish on the sonar.

Many of the Stripers on this pattern are simply roaming around very high up in the water column and are hard to see. If you pull an area 15 to 20 minutes without a strike, try another creek back. Keep in mind that these little umbrellas can also be very effective for casting to surfacing fish!

end of the lake. On the north end in the backs of creeks, you will find water temps 50 degrees and below. In the middle to the south end of the lake, you will find water temps approaching midfifties.

The bite has slowed with the recent cold spell. But it should be picking up, so right now, crappie fishing is fair. Expect the creeks to have moderate to heavy stain.

This could work to your advantage, using darker colored jigs.

To have a successful day, we are having to cover a lot of water until you find the right spot with schooling fish on submerged brush piles. Channel docks are also holding fish, and the water is not nearly as stained as the backs

of creeks.

Bobby Garland’s Mr. Crappie, and the Panfish Assassins, combined with 1/24 oz Davis jig heads are a good choice.

If you prefer it, our “go to” hair jig continues to be a Jiffy Jig. Because the bite has slowed, you may want to consider a change to 2 lb test line. Most of the fish we are catching are a pound or less.

Snow sets the scene for successful Boat Parade of Lights January 2018

By Pamela A. Keene A little snow made a perfect setting for this year’s Boat Parade of Lights on Lake Lanier.

Weather forecasters predicted a light dusting in and around the lower end of Lake Lanier, but Mother Nature had other plans.

“The snow was the icing on the cake for us this year,” said Barkley Geib, president of Lanier Partners, which sponsors the parade each December to raise money for children’s charities in North Georgia. “We urged people to be cautious on their docks and boats because of possible ice on Saturday as they decorated and brought their boats to Sunset Cove at Lanier Islands. We had a record number of entries and our winter ‘dusting’ brought us longawaited winter temperatures.”

The real winners of the day were the youth charities that will benefit from the Boat Parade of Lights – Hall County Sheriff’s Youth Home, Lake Lanier Boys & Girls Clubs, Hall Count Sheriff’s Dive Team and Toys 4 Tots.

Their checks will be presented during the first quarter of 2018.

It was also a winning day for Scott and Joanne Tollerson, who won the Grand Prize Raffle and

received a brand-new Yamaha Waverunner VX and trailer, made possible by Park Marine.

Marc D’Amico received the “Best Parade Ship” prize for his boat “The Office.” He got into the holiday spirit by dressing as Santa for the event.

Participants in the parade marshaled at their respective marinas late on Saturday afternoon before proceeding to Lanier Islands where the boats were on display for guests and locals. Winners and runners-up were selected at each marina.

He and Robin moved to Atlanta for her job as an engineer. Len began reaching out to the boating and sailing community, working on boats, not only in Georgia, but across the country. Robin retired from her engineering job and now teaches mathematics at East Hall High School.

Len was well-known and respected around the world, but when you met him, he was kind, proper and humble. You’d never have known about all the life experiences and adventures he had lived. Here is his obituary, which sums up his life best: Leonard T. Kirkham, longtime resident of Buford, passed away at home on December 11, 2017. He was 70 years old.

Born in Birmingham, England, Len attended primary school in Germany and then entered unique apprenticeship training as a shipwright. He achieved several degrees in economics and media including MBA, DMS, and MBIM. Honored to be a part of the British sailing team for the first Whitbread Round the World Race, Len subsequently completed several solo circumnavigations of the globe. A renowned navigator, tactician, and captain, he won international titles in several classes of racing yachts.

An ardent British historian, he traveled to view all the lands once held by the British Empire. It was while wandering the

world in 1985 that he found himself in New Jersey where he met his wife Robin, and the wandering was greatly slowed (but not stopped). He is survived by Robin, his foster daughter Christelle and her daughter Aliyah, his children Steve and Helen, and several brothers and a sister in England.

An avid traveler, Len once wrote, “Whether it was in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal, the dry plains of Zululand, the desert of Ethiopia, or the coastal resorts of New Jersey, the kindness and goodness of my fellow man always prevailed.” Fluent in several languages and conversant in many more, Len was always able to order a beer in the native tongue.

The world has lost a great treasure. We are all richer for having known him. A memorial celebrating his life will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

Ah, the joys of forecasting snow in Georgia We have one month behind us in the meteorological winter and two months to go. If the first month is any indication of what we can expect this La Nina winter, we are going to have our work cut out for us!

December’s snowstorm was without a doubt, one of the most challenging forecasts in my 36 years forecasting the weather for north Georgia.

When I was looking at the various models a few days before that Friday the 8th snow, the majority showed modest snow amounts of one, maybe two inches. However, there was one model that was showing 6-10 inches! I thought that was just ridiculous. I also know we don’t really know what is going to happen when forecasting snow in north Georgia until the night before or the day of, the event.

The night before the National Weather Service issued a “Winter Weather Advisory” for up to one inch of snow. That is what we went with during the 11 p.m. newscast on December 7th. I said again, it might not be until the morning until we actually had a good handle on things. Sure enough, models began to indicate more than an inch of snow. It now looked like we could get two to three inches of snow, possibly isolated higher amounts. So, the NWS then issued a “Winter Storm Warning” for the western metro counties.

The fun and games began that morning and the snow came down at such a rate that 2-4 inch accumulations were being observed in less than an hour. When it was

all said and done, snowfall, mainly along and west of I-85, measured Glenn six to 13 inches!

I remember the BlizBurns zard of ’93 very well. I made a perfect forecast Lanier on that storm, basically Outlook using stone knives and bear skin rugs, compared to the technology we have today.

That was the most snow I have ever seen fall in north Georgia. However, last month’s storm result at my house: nearly 13 inches. I knew it was more than 1993.

Sure enough, our December 18th, 2017 shattered snowfall records in some areas.

For Cobb County and Carroll County, the 12-13 inches was the most snow since the NWS began keeping snow records in 1928!

So here we are in January. It’s usually the coldest month of the year and presents its fair share of winter weather surprises. I will throw this out there. The last 10 out of 15 years when we have had a December snow, it never snowed again for the entire winter. However, it is not the snow I am concerned with this month. It’s ice.

A La Nina weather pattern is notorious for bringing us ice storms. La Nina winters have brought catastrophic ice storms where power can be out for a week or more. This is the month it will most likely happen, according to climatology. I am not forecasting an ice storm but I will certainly be keeping my eye out for even a minor chance. This would be something you need a lot of lead time on. I would want everyone well prepared for long duration event.

Maybe, just maybe, it will be one of those 10 out of 15 years where we don’t get any more frozen precipitation after a December snow. Prepare for the worst and we’ll hope for the best.

Back to the future ... in boating

Technology advancing so fast it becomes almost a blur. Nothing terribly wrong with this increasing frequency of evolution, except one seemingly small, but extremely significant point: remembering how to use alternate methods of operating your vessel.

The most precise and quickest form of marine navigation is GPS. Within seconds an accurate position can be read, safe water assured, sometimes even seeing the bottom in vivid 3D. Connection to satellites allows for real time weather observation, music and entertainment at your fingertips. But what happens when the power goes out or some other electronic causality occurs?

Is there the possibility that your GPS is not providing precise positional information?

Actually that last question is not far off the mark. During my professional interaction with mariners – all types, commercial, military, and personal – they all have a common theme in their stories. Sometimes the information is not correct. Distance off the actual position varies from as little as a few feet to over 20 yards. That can lead to a wide variety of marine incidents.

Most boaters around these parts have probably been watching football knowing their boat is safe, secure and winterized.

But now it’s time to start planning for the boating season.

Resolution #1: Check all of your safety USCG required equipment. That includes PFDs (personal flotation devices), anchor rode, running and anchor lights, fire extinguishers, fenders and spare lines. Inspect and replace where necessary. You might want to make a list of possible replacement items so when you go to the Atlanta Boat Show you could take advantage of the sales there. Make sure you have noted the replacements and or updates

in your log book.

Pamela A. Keene little more than 70 years ago, Lake Lanier was a concept on paper as the U.S. Congress authorized the construction of Buford Dam in 1946. It would be nearly 10 years before the lake created by the damming of the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers.

But long before Buford Dam was built, the land that now lies beneath the surface of the 39,000acre lake was inhabited by residents who traveled by roads, bridges and ferry. Some of those bridges and ferry crossings are familiar to current residents who traverse bridges named for those long-ago landmarks. Others have developed local-knowledge names that help residents and visitors make their way from one side of the lake to the other.

“The lake’s original bridges were built to last about 50 years,” said Katie Strickland, district

communications coordinator and GDOT spokeswoman for the Northeast Region of the Georgia Department of Transportation, the government body that oversees roads, bridges, tunnels, overpasses and such across the state.

“DOT inspects all Georgia bridges every two years, and there are 750 bridges or culverts in 21 counties that are inspected.”

The Georgia Department of Transportation has been rebuilding the lake’s 12 bridges over the past decade or so. With the completion of State Route 53 (Bolling Bridge) and State Route 369, (Browns Bridge) within the next three to five years, all will have been replaced with the latest in construction technology. The GDOT has currently awarded contracts for most of the rebuilds on all of the lake’s bridges.

“GDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work together on such projects,” Strickland said.

“It just seemed like a natural thing to paint the bridges,” said Brodie Hill, who moved to Lake Lanier in 1995 with her husband Bob Hill. “We were out one day on the boat and I took a photo of Browns Bridge.

I had already been painting lake scenes, and Don Griffin of Frames-you-nique encouraged me to do a series featuring the bridges.”

From that conversation, Brodie Hill has painted six of the bridges, five that are maintained by the Georgia Department of Transportation: the old Clarks Bridge near Lake Lanier Olympic Park, Longstreet Bridge, Browns Bridge, Twomile Creek Bridge, Bolling Bridge and the bridge near Hideaway Bay Marina on McEver Road.

“I didn’t just paint the bridges,” she said. “In each one, I’ve put something interesting in the foreground, such as fishermen with a big striper jumping behind them in the Longstreet Bridge painting and the old LanMar Marina dock in the painting of Browns Bridge.”

various businesses and organizations. But one of the most interesting projects involved working with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, starting in 2015, to first assist in relocating several Osprey nests that had been built atop Bolling Bridge on State Route 53.

“Osprey are protected through the Federal Endangered Species Act, so we worked with the DNR and with Jackson EMC to put up two timber poles with platforms near the bridge to encourage the osprey to migrate there,” she said.

“GDOT delayed construction at Bolling Bridge until mid-October of 2017, the time of the year when the osprey migrate.”

Strickland added, “We are not allowed to touch the bridge during the Osprey nesting season, and a special provision was placed in this construction contract.”

The first concrete caisson supports for Bolling Bridge were poured in 2017. The plan is to build the replacement bridge right next to the existing bridge, then divert traffic to the new 2-lane structure. Afterward, the old steel-truss bridge will be demolished.

The new bridge will have two 12-foot-wide lanes and 8-foot shoulders. The $20 million project is expected to take almost three years to complete, with a target date of March 2019. It in-

cludes building the new bridge and the approaches to the bridge, a total of .74 miles of construction, widening and realignment.

“The bridges over the lake really create connectivity throughout many of the northeast Georgia counties,” Strickland says. “For instance, how would you get to Forsyth County or Cumming on State Route 53 without Bolling Bridge? You can’t, unless you own a boat.”

The concrete bridge on State Route 60, AKA Thompson Bridge, provides essential connectivity to North Georgia. “This bridge carries traffic over the lake and heads up to Dahlonega, connecting people from GainesvilleHall County to the top portion of the state,” Strickland says. “These structures bridge the gaps between our counties and allow people to live in rural areas and travel daily to the more urban areas to work and go to school.”

It’s all in a name Over the years, bridges that cross Lake Lanier have become known by certain names, but they’re not official in most cases.

“Most of the bridges across Lake Lanier are historic names, not official,” Strickland said.

“Some were named for former structures below the lake or other common ways, such as for the road they’re on.”

Today, there’s Shadburn Ferry Road, but it’s located on the Hall/Gwinnett side of the lake.

Distinctive green trusses originally built in 1956 and being replaced at a cost of $19 million. Construction began in late 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2019.

A new bridge is being built adjacent to the existing bridge; the new bridge will carry two-way traffic once it is complete. The old bridge will be demolished, and a second span will be built.

The new structure will have two lanes of traffic in each direction.

Jerry Jackson Bridge, AKA Lanier Bridge, on Dawsonville Highway/Ga. 53 crosses the Chattahoochee River. Repaved within the past few years at a cost of $2.9 million. Plans are to replace this bridge as part of the $20 million Hall County plan to widen the road as early as 2021.

Longstreet Bridge and Bells Mill Bridge carry US 129/SR 11 over the Chattahoochee River and the East Fork Little River respectively. These new structures will be completed in spring 2020 and come with a construction price tag marked $34 million. These bridges were awarded together in one contract to help expedite the replacement process.

The two Cleveland Highway/U.S. 129 projects began in December, and new structures will be built next to each bridge. This construction is a foreshadowing to long-range plans to widen Cleveland Highway/U.S. 129 from Limestone Parkway to the White County line, but no dates have been set.

Thompson Bridge, not its official name, is the double-span concrete bridge on SR 60/Thompson Bridge Road about a mile from Lakewood Baptist Church on one end and about 300 yards from Gainesville First United Methodist Church on the other was renovated and expanded several years ago to accommodate four lanes of traffic – two lanes in one direction on one span and lanes in the opposite direction on the other.

Six-Mile Creek: Browns Bridge Road/Ga. 369 crosses over Six-Mile Creek. One span is now being built to handle traffic that will be redirected from the old bridge, which will be removed.

This represents .625 miles of construction and the first caissons were poured in September. A second bridge will be built once 369 is widened, although no date for the widening has been set.

Clarks Bridge – Clarks Bridge Road/SR 284 near Lake Lanier Olympic Park was rebuilt and widened in 2015.

Two bridges on SR 136/Price Road – The work to be done on the bridge over Lake Lanier/Chestatee River is in preliminary design. Concept work on the bridge over Lake Lanier/Toto Creek will begin in 2018.

One bridge on SR 52 – Replacement is planned on the bridge over the Lake Lanier/Chattahoochee River.

Winter night sky above Lanier sparkles; Learn how to find the stars in nature center program

By Jane Harrison The stars coming out over Lake Lanier this winter shine in a broad horizon on a dark stage.

Sirius, Betelgeuse, and the Seven Sisters, celestial bodies that guided sailors long before the invention of modern navigation tools, sparkle from the night sky in a show beautiful by land and water.

Area stargazers can get a primer on viewing the guide stars and constellations in Stars Over Elachee, a monthly program conducted by Elachee Nature Science Center in Gainesville. The lakescape sets a big horizon distant from light pollution in cities, making lakeside or on-the-water views particularly spectacular, according to Robert D. Webb, a North Georgia astronomer who volunteers in the Elachee program. He or astronomy expert Debbie Deroche take program guests on monthly tours by land during the first quarter moon to see who’s on the night stage. Participants can reserve a telescope and see craters on the moon, the red glare from Betelgeuse, or Aldebaran, the orange blaze of Taurus the Bull’s eye.

Night tourists in winter can bundle up or bring a lounge chair and blanket to recline to watch the most dazzling shows of the year in January and February. “The winter stars are brighter,” Webb said, due to their proximity to the earth this time of year when earthlings face the spiral arm of the galaxy. We can peer into space beyond our galaxy’s borders and see sharper views less obstructed by the Milky Way’s galactic dust.

Webb noted other reasons why winter is prime time for star gazing. Some of the most prominent stars in the galaxy show up this season. And, spectators don’t have to stay up late to see them.

Sirius, the Dog Star, the brightest of the winter sky, comes out at sunset, around 5:30 p.m. this month. The constellation, Orion the Hunter, which contains more bright stars than any other, stalks across the sky in winter.

Webb explained an easy tracking method to find a winter triangle of prominent stars. First, locate Orion, a familiar constella-

tion recognizable by the three stars of his belt. Scan up to his shoulder to locate the center of the triangle, Betelgeuse, a red super giant 625 light years from earth. Diagonally to the right from Betelgeuse reigns Rigel, a blue super giant 860 light years away.

Using Orion’s belt as a landmark, it’s also possible to spot the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, a star cluster that premieres in November and is viewable all winter.

Orion’s two faithful dogs accompany him. To his left, Canis Major, the Big Dog, contains Sirius, the brightest star in our sky.

Taurus the Bull, and the Gemini, The Twins, are also easy to spot in the winter sky.

Elachee’s astronomy experts double as excellent storytellers, weaving in ancient myths about the stars and constellations making their appearance this season.

The presentation includes a session on how to set up a telescope, with which participants can actually see the pockmarked face of the moon and various hues of stars. Plus, guests get a star chart for the month and a fill-

in-the-blank worksheet to test their star acumen. Families, couples and individuals attend each month with the opportunity of seeing beyond earth’s realm into

Some might find it brightens the bleakness of winter to see the lights of the night sky with others who seek them.

Teak Mafia: High-end woodwork enhances boat functionality

By Pamela A. Keene Boat furnishings as art? That’s the goal for Chris Goins, owner of Teak Mafia, who makes furniture and accessories for boats.

“Bringing in a little more teak or mahogany to make extra seating in the galley or some well-placed cup-holders can change the feel of Goins your boat,” said Goins, who’s also a consulting engineer for manufacturing process who works around the country. “What I create is functional art, because for me it’s all about perfection and quality.”

Goins is happy that 100 percent of his Teak Mafia business is referral-based. “Whether people have bought a new boat or are doing a renovation, I can help them, and I’m more affordable then purchasing stock items from the manufacturers.”

Currently, he said he has a waiting list of about four months; it takes about two months from the time he contracts with a client until the work is complete. He has done work for clients across the

country.

Each item is hand-crafted, based on initial consultations with potential clients. “I ask them how many people are typically on the boat, where they tend to gather, and what they’re looking for to enhance their boating experience,” he said. He chiefly works with teak and mahogany, adding stainless and other accents and inlays to the brightwork he creates.

“It may be a swim platform or a salon table, but each piece is custom made.”

His manufacturing consulting is his day job. “My goal is to help bring manufacturing back to the United States by helping companies automate their processes,” he said. However, his passion is woodworking. “Most of the time people can find me in my wood shop on nights and weekends.”

Goins, who grew up in Norcross, spent several years in Colorado working with big-name toy designers. About five years ago he moved back to Georgia to be near family. He lives in Roswell.

2018 will see positive changes for Teak Mafia.

Goins is moving to a new location closer to the lake. He’s also

adding ceramic coating and new finishes for some of the pieces he makes. “I’m also adding new inlay designs.

Goins, 32, said he looks at everything he does as a challenge, a way to broaden his learning.

“If I’m not working on something complicated, I’m not happy,” he said. “In boats, there are no straight lines and doing this type of high-end woodworking keeps me on the steep end of the learning curve, which is where I work best.” n MORE INFO:

Poster contest’s 28th year highlights Georgia’s wildlife diversity

Teachers and students across the state are invited to honor Georgia’s wildlife and students’ artistic interests by participating in the 28th annual Give Wildlife a Chance Poster Contest.

The goal of the competition, open to grades K-5, is to generate a greater knowledge and appreciation of Georgia’s diverse and increasingly threatened nongame wildlife and their habitats.

Nongame species (those not legally hunted or fished for) vary from rare animals and plants such as Barbour’s map turtle and dwarf trillium to common species such as the Carolina chickadee and tulip poplar.

This popular art contest is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and The Environmental Resources Network (TERN), friends group of DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section. The theme for the 2017-18 school year is “Nature at Night.” The topic highlights the various adaptive behaviors of wildlife as well as their interactions with plants.

mals are most active, they are considered diurnal, crepuscular or nocturnal. Diurnal wildlife (including the chipmunk, green anole and most songbirds) usually are awake during the day but asleep at night. Crepuscular animals (like the big brown bat, common nighthawk and fireflies) are most active at twilight but may be awake during the night, too. Nocturnal animals (such as the southern flying squirrel and most owls and frogs) typically are active at night but asleep during the day.

Some native plants cater to nocturnal insects to ensure pollination. For example, yucca flowers produce most of their

sweet-smelling nectar at night to attract the yucca moth. Sundrops, a type of evening primrose, keep their flowers open at night so hummingbird moths, green lacewings and other pollinators can visit.

After creating artwork based on this year’s theme and within contest rules, participants will enter their drawings and paintings at the local school level.

Top school-level entries then proceed to the state contest at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens. First-, second- and third-place winners are chosen there for four divisions: kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, and fifth grade.

The deadline for schools to submit state-level entries is April 13, 2018.

The top 12 state-level winners’ artwork will be showcased on DNR Wildlife Resources Division social media sites and displayed at the State Botanical Garden in Athens May 8-16. The State Botanical Garden offers a fascinating variety of plants as well as opportunities to view wildlife in

Unknown to many Georgia residents, some architectural masterpieces were built as forts to secure Savannah and its port from Union forces before and during the War Between the States.

These were phenomenal state-ofthe-art engineering structures for their time that were practically obsolete before they were finished because of the advancement in the tools of warfare.

Slightly south of downtown Savannah on the river is Old Fort Jackson, which was constructed in 1808 and is the oldest standing brick fort in Georgia. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Since this gorgeous old fort is slightly off the beaten path, few visitors to Savannah ever have the pleasure of seeing or experiencing this historic treasure.

who is credited with designing its complicated channels and dykes that kept the waters away from workers was Lieutenant Robert E. Lee. Named after Revolutionary War hero Count Casimir Pulaski, the fort was completed in 1844, but was minimally manned until the War Between the States in 1861. Even before the South seceded from the Union, Fort Pulaski was taken by a local Georgia militia.

In December of 1861, federal forces took nearby Tybee Island and began installing batteries of newly-designed rifled canon.

They were ready and began shelling the fort with pinpoint accuracy on 10 April, 1862, and though the Confederate forces fought valiantly with their outdated canon, they surrendered in less than 24 hours.

The use of rifled artillery at Fort Pulaski forever changed military thinking about coastal defenses. Works of brick and mortar could no longer stand up against the powerful rifled cannon, and America would never again build a brick fortress to defend its harbors.

Though Fort Jackson can be enjoyed in a few hours, it would be impossible to take in all that Fort Pulaski has to offer. From

Wildlife viewing grants offered; projects sought Wanted: Projects that can use a hand helping Georgians enjoy and better understand animals, plants and habitats emphasized in Georgia’s State Wildlife Action Plan.

The state Department of Natural Resources has revived its Wildlife Viewing Grants Program and is seeking unique proposals that promote wildlife viewing. Private, public and nonprofit organizations, including local governments, are invited to apply. The deadline is Feb. 1, 2018.

These small grants, capped at $3,000 per project, are made possible by the Georgia Natural Resources Foundation and Georgia’s Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Administered by DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section, part of the Wildlife Resources Division, the grants program helps provide viewing opportunities that increase public awareness and appreciation of nongame wildlife (species not fished for or hunted), rare native plant species and natural habitats.

The emphasis is on species

rated conservation priorities in the State Wildlife Action Plan.

Revised in 2015 by DNR and more than 100 stakeholders, the plan is a strategy to conserve native species and habitats they need before these animals, plants and places become rarer and costly to conserve or restore.

Nongame Conservation Chief Dr. Jon Ambrose noted that wildlife viewing is popular in Georgia. According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey, about 2.4 million people took part in wildlife-viewing activities in 2011. The survey estimated related spending at $1.8 billion.

“These grants will help develop quality opportunities that connect people with wildlife and wild places that need conservation,” Ambrose said.

“That connection is critical not only for wildlife but also for the well-being of Georgians.

Research shows that people consider nature important for their health and outlook.”

Stripers jump from Lake Lanier to the ballfield

By Pamela A. Keene Seven months and more than 4,000 entries have netted a new name for Gwinnett’s Minor League professional baseball team, and for people in the know, it’s a great choice.

They’re now known as the Gwinnett Stripers. The new name is a tribute to the fishing and outdoors tradition of Gwinnett County and North Georgia, according to the announcement news release issued in December.

“It is our goal that the Stripers identity will strengthen our ties to the surrounding community while also giving us the ability to stand out among the many entertainment options this area boasts,” said North Johnson, vice president and general manager of the organization. “The Stripers logos are both fresh and traditional, introducing our new main color of ‘Stripers Green’ while maintaining the familiar Navy and Red worn by our Major League parent, the Braves. The majestic Striper displayed on our home caps, fiercely in pursuit of a baseball-baited hook, shows the fighting spirit of our team. Our uniforms will now feature pinstripes, a timeless baseball look
