High times continue as Lake Lanier rises

By Jane Harrison Last month emerged as perhaps highest December on record for Lake Lanier after rainfall amounts in North Georgia measured nearly twice the 30 year average for the month. The 4.1 inches that fell Dec. 22 raised Lake Lanier to its highest December level ever at 1073.09 feet above sea level. The North Georgia reservoir averaged an unofficial 1071.77 feet as of Dec. 24, just shy of the highest average December level recorded for the lake created in 1957. The top December average occurred in 1992, when U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data show a 1071.92 average.

The Corps calculates the average from daily measures taken at midnight at Buford Dam. The December measures culminate an extraordinary rise in Lake Lanier from a low of 1056.86 in December 2012 to record average elevations last summer and at the end of the year. Lanier monthly averages rose above full pool from April through December 2013, exceeding full pool measures set by the Corps for summer (1071) and fall/winter (1070).

“We like to pull it to 1070 by

the first of December and maintain it until mid-April,” said Corps Water Management Spokesperson Lisa Parker. Large amounts of rainfall in the river basin connecting Lanier to other reservoirs downstream have slowed the drawdown. Reservoirs at West Point and Walter F. George, two west Georgia lakes on the Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river systems, also reached beyond their full winter

pools. “It’s a balancing act” trying to simultaneously maintain goal levels in the system, she said.

Heavy rain in North Georgia December 22, 8 and 14, combined with smaller amounts most days in the first half of the month, kept Lanier’s level up. In an interview Dec. 16, Parker said the Corp had aimed to bring the level down to the official winter goal of 1070 the first week this month.

However that goal was set back

after deluges escorted the lake more than three feet above goal the final week of 2013. “We anticipate rain continuing, which will push us back and slow the process,” said Corps Public Affairs Specialist Lance Davis. “We will have releases contingent on the weather.” He added that releases are calculated to avoid flooding downstream. He did not foresee concerns with flooding due to draw downs on the system.

2014 safe boating courses begin in February As you read this article, the Atlanta Boat Show will be under way or on the verge of opening.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be located in booth # 244 in Hall “C” of the Georgia World Congress Center. We invite you to stop by and talk with our members about membership or almost any phase of recreational boating, including arranging for a free Vessel Safety Check. I was amused recently to read that a frequently used excuse given to law enforcement for speeding in an auto was “I was just keeping up with the flow of

traffic.” The officer’s reply was “the flow of traffic is not necessarily the speed limit.” Accidents/deaths on the water usually are followed by questions asked by law enforcement, and one of them could well be “have you taken a safe boating course?”

If you violate any of these rules and cause a problem, you can be held accountable to these rules. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to be familiar with the most common ones? The civil penalty that can be imposed for violation of these rules has been set at “not

Deep Water 101: In search of Lake Lanier’s bass population I love the ease of fishing during the latter part of April. It’s a great time to trade in some serious depth finder usage for a set of polarized sunglasses and cast to submerged objects that harbor shallow bass. Unfortunately, with brief exceptions in the fall, these situations are all too short lived.

Although a portion of the bass population will live in the shallows nearly year round many will frequent deeper haunts. Of course, spotted bass dominate the Lake Lanier population and this subspecies of the black bass family is well known for it’s affinity to deep water and will typically hold deeper than largemouth. To be consistently successful in our area it pays to be proficient at fishing deeper structure. If you’re not in tune with this, all it takes is practice to gain a solid comfort level and start catching a lot of bass. On a positive note, deep water bass are prone to gang up in large numbers and it’s very possible to catch multiple fish from one spot returning later in the day to catch even more. Why fish for scattered singles in the shallows when you can go deeper and show your bait to an entire school? To get started, you’ll

need a depth finder, topographic map, and marker buoys. While some may consider map use a dated practice, the reality is that using a good map will get you started in the right direction.

These tools will enable you to pinpoint and fish structure. When using the term structure, I’m referring to a noticeable change in depth, usually the sharper the better. A quick transition from shallower to deeper water (both relative terms) is attractive to most gamefish. A characteristic that can turn one of these places into a fish magnet is the presence of natural or man made cover such as rock, stumps, or brush piles. When schools of baitfish are close, locations become better yet.

Quality is affordable The simple marker buoy is an inexpensive yet essential tool for

serious structure fishing. When you’ve located that hot spot, even fairly close to shore, it’s very easy to drift and have your lure away from the strike zone. As you identify a target on your depth finder, toss the buoy a few yards to one side. Avoid dropping it directly on a piece of cover that could be holding fish. Using this as a reference point will make your fishing more productive. I like the “H” shaped buoys because they wind up quicker than models with a narrow cylinder type center. Another essential tool is the depth finder. Today’s liquid crystal graph units are easy to read and provide a lot of information about what’s under the boat. Outstanding units are available today at a fraction of the prices one would pay for lesser quality 10 to 15 years ago. While you can purchase a serviceable unit for less than $100, $200 will get you a larger screen and more importantly higher pixel counts for greater resolution. You will definitely appreciate this. More money can get you greater peak to peak power, color versus gray scale imaging, or a GPS mapping combination. Color display units have become very affordable. Top

end units feature three dimensional and side scanning capabilities. These leave nothing to the imagination, but they’re not a magic bullet for putting fish on the line. Talk to your local fishing electronics staff to find out what’s right for you. Regardless of what you choose, the most important aspect is in knowing how to read the unit’s output. Most of the time you will not see the perfect arches (indicating fish) displayed like the unit you saw in the store.

That demonstration mode represents very ideal conditions. Often fish will appear on the screen as wavy lines or lazy looking arches based on their position relative to the transducer. Just as, or more importantly, it’s critical to know how to identify brush piles, schools of baitfish, and submerged timber. Luckily, that’s pretty easy with a minimum of practice. All told, these units are very user friendly. If your boat has both a dash and front depth finder, mount the best unit at the bow with the transducer installed on the trolling motor. A special clamp and puck type unit is available for this.

ture fishing triangle is a good topographic map and knowing how to read it. A couple of brands are widely available. Look for one with a 10-foot interval between contour lines. If one was available with a five-foot interval, I would buy it. More contour lines give greater terrain detail.

Take a few minutes to study the legend and you’ll see old road beds and building foundations scattered here and there. These can be great places to catch fish assuming the edges are still somewhat defined and the depths are not too great. Key features to focus on are submerged ridges, draws, and hilltops. When on the water, look for brush piles in these areas. The submerged ridges equate to long tapering points.

Draws are the “mini valleys” between steeper points, and of course, the hilltops of yesteryear have become submerged humps.

It’s important to note that closer spaced contour lines indicate a sharp depth change while more spread out lines reveal a gradual drop. Focus on sharper depth changes such as the ends of points and the sides of humps adjacent to creek channels. GameSee Fishing, page 11

Continued from Page 10 fish typically prefer a short migration route from deep to shallow water. Remember again that shallow is a relative term and could mean 10 feet deep when you’re offshore. One of my favorite humps rises to about six feet below the surface which is hardly deep but one side breaks sharply into a really close by creek channel. Bass are close to that spot all year. Likewise, the sweet spot on a long tapering point may be out near the apex. Don’t overlook any irregularity. Anywhere a channel bend swings in close is a spot worth checking out. Use a fine point permanent marker to record areas on your map along with notes about each spot such as depth and triangulation information. These days, many anglers will store locations in GPS units, tablets, and other electronics. This is an outstanding use of technology but having a marked map is a good old fashioned back up device. Since lake levels are subject to fluctuation, record depths as if the lake were at full pool. Otherwise it can be difficult to get back on a key piece of underwater terrain. Also record the information on a backup map you keep at home.

That way, if a map ever blows out of the boat you won’t lose potentially years worth of valuable information.

Begin reconnaissance at home The word “triangulation” was men-

tioned in the last paragraph. This is a simple technique for pinpointing a location used by savvy anglers decades before GPS technology became widely available and affordable. If you’re depth finder does not have a GPS feature, try this. It’s remarkably effective. Once you pinpoint that elusive hot spot, get three reference points.

One will be the bottom depth. The other two will be prominent objects on the shoreline which may be close or distant.

Try to locate two that are an estimated 90 degrees apart. One such object could be a pine tree on a nearby island which is taller than its neighbors while another could be a dip in a distant tree line that looks amazingly like the rear sight on a BB gun. All sorts of things can be used as reference points. Pick ones you’ll remember easily.

After fishing a spot only a couple of times you’ll probably have them committed to memory. It’s a very effective method that will get you to within 10 or 15 yards of a target. A couple of zig-zag passes with your eyes on the depth finder are usually all it takes to find the “spot on the spot.”

It’s not as hard as you think to amass a milk run of deep structure hot spots. Typically you’ll be searching water that’s 25 to 45 feet deep. In late spring and summer look at the upper to middle part and in the See Fishing, page 12

Surface Temp: Low 50s.

Clarity: Normal. Clear in main lake areas with some color in upper tributaries.

Bass fishing has been good lately. Surprisingly, shallow, mid-depth, and deep patterns have all been producing lately. This could be because the lake is significantly more full than normal for this time of year. It’s anyone’s guess. We set a record high temperature recently. If we do get seasonable cold temperatures, expect the deep water bite to become the mainstay. Shallow fish are being caught in pockets and off rock points during the early hours. Crankbaits, jerkbaits, plastic worms, and jigs will all work. With colder water temperatures, be sure to work the crankbaits and jigs slowly. If you’re targeting the mid-depth fish, look for brush or rock cover in the 15 to 20 foot range. If you can locate abrupt depth changes such as old wash outs or ditches, these can be very productive. Don’t forget the boat docks. These are a Lanier staple. Stick with the jig or shakey head worm in these areas. You can catch deep fish now and throughout the winter. Go out a deep water plan every day. Thirty five to 50 feet is a good target zone. Brush piles and submerged timber lines are good places to crawl a jig or drop a spoon. Don’t forget to look for concentrations of baitfish on your depth finder screen. If you find lots of bait and the other elements are present, stick with it because the bass are close by.

Striper fishing is good. Expect to catch fish from the surface down to 30 feet. Look for fish chasing bait on the surface, especially early in the day. The old reliable bucktail jig paired with a fluke style or curly tail trailer is a fine producer. You won’t go wrong with all white or white color combinations. Choose jig sizes in three eighths to one half ounce. The gulls are on the lake in force. Look for flocks of diving birds to give away the locations of surface feeders. If you’re in the search mode, be sure to drift at least two flat lines baited with small trout, or other live bait about 100 feet behind the boat. Never forget that it pays to blind cast while looking for fish and drifting live baits. If you’re spotting deeper fish on sonar, use down rods to drop herring or shad down to their level. The upper lake has been the most productive lately.

Focus your efforts from Flat Creek on up. Search all the way up in finger coves and pockets, especially early in the day. Expect this theme to continue through the winter months.

Special Olympics to hold state fall games in Hall County

By Jane Harrison “I’m ready to give what I’ve got and I’ll bring that into the Special Olympics,” a beaming 16year-old John Perguson told onlookers gathered at North Hall Park last month. Special Olympians joined local officials and Special Olympics Georgia staff members in the Dec. 4 press conference announcing Hall County as the 2014-2016 pick for the State Fall Games and Horse Show.

Perguson, a North Hall High School student who loves to play basketball, expects to be among the estimated 2,000 athletes competing in the Oct. 10-12, 2014 events at North Hall Park and Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center. They will be tossing bocce balls, running, walking, cycling and hitting softballs at the Nopone Road park and showing their dressage, showmanship and riding skills at the Calvary Church Road equestrian center.

Although the three-year commitment to hold the state games in Hall County is expected to bring more than $500,000 annually into the community, this

event hits deeper than economic impact, said Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau President Stacey Dickson. The Special Olympics bring “something money can’t buy … the heartfelt experiences of the participants and volunteers who get emotionally attached,” Dickson said.

“This is going to be an event that is very near and dear to our hearts.”

The state organization and county and city parks departments are seeking 1,000 volunteers to help coach and transport athletes and cheer at the finish lines. In addition, they are seeking fund raising opportunities and sponsorships.

For some volunteers, the games may present a first viewing of bocce, a bowling-like sport that originated in ancient Italy and is the most popular Special Olympic activity. Fall Games Director Charles White said nearly 900 participants play bocce in the three-day event.

Having the state event in Hall County will benefit the local Special Olympics program, which includes about 500 participants,

said Georgia Milton-Sheats, Special Olympics Georgia Chief Executive Officer. It is expected to increase funding and community awareness of the Hall County chapter. She commended Hall County Parks & Leisure for its facilities and welcoming response to Special Olympics Georgia when the organization approached the county last spring.

“We’re excited to showcase our facilities, our community and our hospitality. This is a tremendous opportunity,” said Hall County Parks and Leisure Director Mike Little.

“We’re turn key and ready to go,” he said of North Hall Park, which opened a little more than a year ago, and the agricultural center, which county commissioners discussed closing in years past.

Special Olympian John Burt is also ready. “I love sports. I love everything about sports,” the 17year-old West Hall High School student said after the Fall Games announcement. “In Special Olympics, I can watch and compete at the same time. I enjoy being with my friends and competing in the sports I like best.

When you approach these areas on the lake, have a couple of marker buoys beside you on the seat. If you have a console depth finder, idle over structure several times looking for cover such as man made brush piles or submerged timber. Toss a marker overboard the moment you spot a significant object on the bottom.

Now’s the time to shut down the big engine and take a closer look at the spot using your electric motor. If it looks good record the information on your map (again in pencil) and note the depth.

Wind up your marker buoy and repeat this drill in several other places. Then start exploring these spots with a fishing rod in your hand rigged with a favorite deep water plastic bait or jigging spoon. If you’re impatient, you can shut down the big engine and make your initial approach using

the electric motor with marker and fishing rod ready. It’s debatable whether the outboard motor actually spooks bass or not, especially on our heavily trafficked lakes. I am a believer in stealth.

Do whatever brings you success.

If you don’t slay the fish on your first visit to a piece of deep structure, don’t give up. Try it several times in varying conditions and maybe even different seasons before writing it off. Some places are better in summer while others shine in winter. A few just don’t

seem to attract many fish at any time.

In closing, a new year is upon us. Make a resolution this year to develop or further refine your deep structure fishing skills. Put some effort into it and you’ll be glad you did. Take care and have a great 2014!

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Rowing crews flocking south to Lanier

By Jane Harrison The University of Virginia Men’s Crew plans to migrate south for winter training on Lake Lanier Jan. 3. The 50-60 member Cavalier crew and coaching staff leads the flock of more than a thousand collegiate rowers expected to hit the water at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue before the end of March.

The crew will row on Lake Lanier’s relatively warm waters far from their icy home base on the Rivanna Reservoir. It will be their fourth winter training trip to Gainesville, where their squad also plays water polo at the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center and warms up on Lake Lanier Rowing Club ergometers. Plus they eat, sleep and shop at local establishments, contributing thousands of dollars to the area economy.

Last year Cavalier Coach Frank Biller told Lakeside his low budget crew and fans easily spend $80,000 in two visits to Lake Lanier. At least 30 other teams are expected to train here before the John Hunter/Lanier Sprints regattas March 29-30, according to LLRC President John Ferriss.

A youth crew from Boston plans to arrive in late February, followed by as many as 200 rowers a week in March.

Ferriss said the club helps the visiting rowers “feel at home.” Club members move or trailer their own boats to give the visitors room in the boathouse. The club charges a $2.75 to $3 fee per rower and rents out motor boats for coaches.

Ross and McLain named Paddlers of the Year

By Jane Harrison Ian Ross and Alex McLain were named 2013 Paddlers of the Year at the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club annual banquet last month. The pair was among 19 individual athletes honored for their achievements last year.

Ross is among the nation’s top canoeists, all LCKC athletes. The University of North Georgia student finished first in four events at the USA Canoe/Kayak National Championships in Oklahoma City last August, sharing a boat with teammate Robert Finlayson in two races. He also won the Lake Placid International single canoe 1000

The U.S. World Championships team member finished 18th in the C1 5000 meter international competition and eighth in the Under-23 C1 1000 meters. Ross came to LCKC from his hometown of Bethesda, Maryland to train with Coach Claudiu Ciur, a former Romanian Olympic canoeist.

McLain placed third with boat mate Cannie Ash in the USACK National Championship K2 500 and joined teammates for a silver medal in the K4 500 meters. She competed in the Copenhagen World Marathon Championships in September and finished the race despite her boat being crippled by a broken rudder cable.

Club highlights from 2013 included 17 gold medals in single and team boat competition at the USACK National Championships and 24 champions in the Master’s National contests.

Service agreement reached for release of funds for Olympic Venue management

By Jane Harrison City and county governments approved the service and lease agreement on the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue last month.

Ratification of the contract releases a total of $300,000 in public funds for management of the facility birthed for the 1996 Olympic flatwater canoe/kayak and rowing events.

The funds, an equal split between Hall County and Gainesville, will be turned over to Gainesville Hall ’96.

The original non-profit organization helped bring the Olympics to Lake Lanier.

Its new board hopes to escort it into a new era of waterfront activity and revenue.

GH ’96 Chairperson Mimi Collins told board members last month she will be meeting with city and county park and recreation officials to discuss the transition and request the actual payment, which was budgeted for fiscal year 2014.

As part of the agreement, the board is expected to hire a venue manager. Collins said she board member Meg Nivens had narrowed a field of more than 50 applicants to eight or nine.

Those finalists include Gainesville kayaker Morgan House, a 2008 and 2012 Olympic hopeful who grew up paddling with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. He now serves as an LCKC coach for high performance athletes.

A service and lease agreement has been approved for the LLOV.

Collins said the position attracted applicants from around U.S. She added she “shied away” from those who did not have a Georgia connection. Several have college degrees in recreation. The board is seeking someone with facility management, fund raising and financial experience, as well as knowledge about canoe/kayak and rowing.

A selection committee with representatives from the city, county, rowing and paddling clubs and community at large is expected to interview candidates and make a job offer this month. Collins set a goal to hire a manager by the end of the month.

Atlanta Boat Show should be best in years The Atlanta Boat Show opens on January 9 and it should be one of the best in years. Last year showed an increase in boat and equipment sales. For 2014 we already have large yachts being built on speculation, and new models of deckboats, pontoons, runabouts, bow riders, and overnighters. So my bet is you will see some boats with new innovations at this show. Searay, Cobalt, Regal, Cruisers, and Stingrays are among a few of the manufacturers already advertising new models.

New safety and electronic equipment will also be on display.

If you want to update your electronics or if you go off shore occasionally you might want a PLB or EPIRBS in case of emergency.

Maybe when winterizing your boat you noted some of your safety equipment might need replacing, PFDs, anchor and rode, fenders, lines or fire extinguishers. I’m sure these will be on sale at a great price, so make a list and save some money.

Don’t forget to check the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron booths to find out about boat inspections and when your family can attend a boating safety class, which upon completion could save you money on boat insurance.

New things to look for at the show: Mercury Marine is announcing its new diesels, eight models strong. The engines are Volkswagen based and marinized

by Mercury Marine. The lineup is a 2.0 liter in-line four (115 to 170 hp), 3.0 liter V-6 (230 to 260 hp) and a 4.2 liter (335 to 370 hp) all are TDI engines. They are available in stern drives or inboard version with ZF transmissions.

Diesel power will become more popular and affordable. All these engines qualify for the EPA’s Tier III regulations. I’ll bet several boats on display will have one of these new diesels for power. Outboards are mostly four-stroke engines with the Evinrude and Mercury producing the best selections of two-strokes, Yamaha is down to two models of twostrokes.

Many pontoon boats will be offered with I/O power this year.

Tests results say they run stronger and are more economical.

On the sailing side Hobie is introducing a 16’ Hobie 72 catamaran with a 26’ mast and 172 square feet of sail. It has a beam of less than eight feet and weighs only 388 pounds, which make

Revolutionary vessel Normally we don’t usually discuss vessels of this size in this column, but since we have all seen the longlines and crabbing trawlers on TV fighting the rough seas off Alaska while harvesting their catch, we know what a dangerous occupation it is. Seattle based “Blue North” a longline cod fishing company with five trawlers went to Norwegian Naval Architects to design a revolutionary fishing vessel. The 191’ project is called Blue North ST-155.

All the retrieving of the longlines is done below decks. They have a moon pool in the bottom of the hull where they retrieve the longlines and immediately clean, vacuum pack, and flash freeze the catch.

The vessel is diesel/electric powered, so it is very efficient.

Boat names After you buy the boat you have to christen it properly with a name. Many times it is a combination of kid’s names or the wife’s first name. I have often wondered when a boat was named after the wife was it because of love or to help to get him out of the dog house for spending so much money.

Jack Eckerd who started Eckerd’s drugstore chain had a beautiful Morgan sloop he sailed in SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference competition). It was named Panacea after the Greek goddess of universal remedy. Of course names like “Soiree,” “Wine Down,” “Max Sea,” “Swan Sea,” “Daiquiri,” “Dream,” “Believe,” Lady M,” “Excellence,” or “Bubba,” are fairly common. I prefer a name that has a story behind it. A friend of mine who was past president of the American Power Boat Association had a Hemi powered 7 liter hydro appropriately called “Long Gone.”

‘Neutral’ conditions make predictions difficult Last month I attended a winter weather seminar at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Along with Atlanta TV meteorologists, attendees included representatives from Georgia Emergency Management Agency, county emergency managers, and meteorologists from the Atlanta National Weather Service.

The goal of the seminar was to look back at past winter weather events and to see how the National Weather Service, GEMA, and county emergency managers handled these events. We went over how soon winter weather advisories, watches, and warnings should be issued, if the warning terms or parameters should be changed, and what would make the public more aware of impending winter weather.

Then a GEMA representative dropped the bomb and asked Keith Stellman, Meteorologist-In-Charge of our National Weather Service, what he thought we could expect this winter.

There was about five minutes of head scratching. Stellman finally replied that he was just not sure. He went on to say predicting long term weather in a “neutral pattern” was extremely difficult. When we have an El Nino, which is above normal sea surface temperatures in the eastern or central equatorial Pacific Ocean, we know we’re going to have a wet and cool winter.

When we have a La Nina, which is ocean cooling in the Pacific, we know we generally have warmer and drier winters. How-

ever, since we don’t have either this winter season, the predictions Glenn are a little more difficult.

Burns Stellman said, based on the latest long-range Lanier model guidance, we Outlook might see some wintry weather during the third or fourth week in January. Climatologically, that IS when we get most of our snow or ice.

The problem I have been dealing with in my own forecasts is the jet stream, or should I say jet streams. Moving from west to east across the country is a river of air containing powerful upper level winds.

The jet stream separates cold air from warm air. The bigger the difference between the cold air and warm air, the stronger the jet stream winds. We always look at the position of the Polar Jet to determine when cold air will move into north Georgia. This winter season, we are dealing with the Polar Jet and also the southern branch of the jet stream called the SubTropical Jet Stream.

While the polar jet brings in cold air, the sub-tropical branch has been transporting storms from the Pacific Ocean through the southern states. It was responsible for that big ice storm across Texas last month.

Stellman and I agree that because there is so much cold air and snow on the ground to our north, we will see the Polar Jet driving farther south during the month of January. With the southern jet bringing in one pacific storm after the other, it will only be a matter of the cold air and a pacific storm

My bet for wintry precipitation this month will be ice and snow. Timing of course, is everything. We’ll continue to watch the weather and will always keep

Returning home to our winter family for the new year Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.

It’s a new year and Sea Island Girl is resting once again on the Sea of Abaco following her month-long journey from coastal Georgia to Marsh Harbour, a family island among 700 islands and cays of the Bahamas. With the exception of two separate nor’easters which held us up for a couple of weeks, the 480-mile trip was a pleasant journey for the crew and an uneventful challenge for our 42-foot trawler.

We had stayed state-side last season and while we enjoyed being with old friends, and making new ones, the Bahamian families whom had become “our winter family” over the years were noticeably absent and sorely missed. It didn’t take long to decide a return to the islands would be in order this year.

Thus far the only emergency that we were unprepared for was a late night, dog overboard drill.

Shifting tides and fixed docks make it difficult at times to get the dogs on and off the boat, and despite the routine we had established, Coco missed the dock and plunged 12 feet into the salty brine. Not being water friendly, she thrashed around, coughed a few times until I could shed my shirt and shoes and dive in.

Coco was a champ and grabbed onto the dock ladder with all four feet. After a minute or two of calming her down, we swam to the swim platform at the aft of the boat where Carolyn assisted me in getting her back

aboard. There was blood everywhere and as we frantically inspected the dog we learned that I was the one bleeding. Apparently the barnacles on the dock ladder took a chunk of skin off my leg.

The good part of the story was that the bleeding was stopped, and Coco was pleased to re-unite with her canine crewmate Robert.

The frightening part was that my wallet went missing during the ordeal. The security guard found it the next morning floating some 100 or so yards from our slip.

There will be more escapades to share with everyone as the season progresses, so stay tuned and we hope that 2014 will be filled with peace, love, fun and happiness for you and your family.

Atlanta Boat Show set to be largest in four years Georgia’s premier boating event, the Progressive Insurance Atlanta Boat Show, will be showcasing the largest variety of boats and watercraft in the Southeast at the Georgia World Congress Center Jan. 9-12, 2014.

From deals on the newest boats and accessories to attractions for the whole family, the show is designed for an audience of all ages and interests.

All alligators used in the show are wild gators that were considered Quattrocchi nuisances and were trapped and set to be destroyed by the state of Florida. They perform for five days in the show and are then retired to a no-kill pond to live out their life.

Go Eye to Eye with Raptors at Owl Show

By Jane Harrison Saturday afternoon visitors to Amicalola Falls State Park can gaze into some of the most mesmerizing eyes on the planet. The weekly “Who Gives a Hoot? Owl Show” gives a rare up close and personal peek at night predators and other raptors that soar over North Georgia.

The dark eyed “Owl Capone,” a barred owl, and petite screamer “Goliath,” a brown-faced Eastern screech owl, are among the feathered stars of the show emceed by 28-year wildlife rehabilitator Lauretta Dean. The owl lady, also an Amicalola ranger for 13 years, shows off birds rescued after encounters with vehicles, utility wires and the like.

Under federal law, if a raptor cannot be rehabilitated and returned to the wild after four months, it is to be destroyed.

However, Dean’s certification as a wildlife educator allows her to adopt the injured fowls, which she calls her “babies.” Visitors crowd the lodge lobby most Saturdays from 1-2 p.m. for their weekly show.

In a December Owl Show, Dean introduced seven of her

adoptees, including the regal Zeus, the handsome king of the food chain. Even bald eagles bow before the great horned owl, the top predator of the Georgia sky.

“No bird will go up against him,” said Dean, as his majesty flashed unflinching yellow eyes at his admirers.

The ghost-faced “Weegee” peered shyly above Dean’s leather-gloved wrist. The barn owl, also known as white faced, monkey face, and love owl, had suffered double-jeopardy before falling into Dean’s healing hands.

Hit by a car on Georgia 400, the injured owl fell into a pesticide vat at a garden nursery. He was near death when a veterinarian prescribed vitamin K to save his life, but the massive dose left him unbalanced and unable to fulfill his mission as a “flying mouse trap.”

A sinister-eyed, black hulk of a bird with a face that feeds on death slumped languidly on Dean’s arm. Fabio, a black vulture, is imprinted by humans. “He either thinks he’s a human or we’re all vultures,” Dean explained. Known as “nature’s garbage disposals,” Fabio and his

ilk eat “road pizzas,” and therefore help control insect-born diseases that could spread from animal carcasses left unattended.

Dean also escorted out Lands A Lot, a red tailed hawk thrice mobbed by crows, Mo Speed, an American kestrel grounded by an injured wing, and Gizmo, a tiny red-faced Eastern screech owl.

After the show, each bird was roused from its boxy dressing room for a meet and greet.

Wildlife rehabilitators Beth and John Thomson, Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park, and park naturalist Hannah Eaton brought the stars out for close-up photos and face-to-face meetings.

The free show opens eyes to some of the region’s most mysterious and allusive creatures whose soaring beauty and place in nature contribute to the quality of life in North Georgia.

Craig’s Marine Canvas wins international award Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene To quote Jimmy Buffett’s song Craig and Chris Blaisdell of Buford are just quietly making noise in their basement workshop on Lanier Islands Parkway. However, their creativity and commitment to excellence has projected them into the international spotlight at the recent IFAI Specialty Fabrics Expo 2013 and Advanced Textiles Conference & Trade Show Orlando, Fla. Craig’s Marine Canvas received the organization’s Outstanding Achievement Award for its Camper Top with Interchangeable panel enclosure project. The project was recognized in the competition’s Powerboat Exterior category.

“We just keep it low key,” Craig said. “We have good relationships with our competitors and they all do great work. We just want to be modest.”

Originally from upstate New York, Craig and wife Chris had full-time jobs in the corporate world. She worked in insurance and he worked with a payroll processing firm and did canvas parttime. Craig learned the canvas business from a master craftsman

When they first came to Lanier, they called on marinas and boat dealers. Purchasing a home on what was then Holiday Road put them smack in the middle of the boating business.

“It only took us two months to decide to move here and within the first year, we had a good feeling that business would be good on Lake Lanier,” Craig said. “The lake was really hopping then. We were also able to survive the meltdown of 2008. In fact, 2013 is one of our best years yet.”

Chris and Craig do all the work in their basement and a workshop behind their home.

They go onsite to take measurements and construct the metal framing and stitch canvas and

vinyl themselves.

“Our clients come to us with ideas and we work together to develop them, going back and forth,” Craig said. “In fact, it’s funny. Some clients we don’t even meet face to face, but work with them via email, drawings and photographs. When the job is done we send them photos. Many of our customers have been with us for years. They just keep upgrading and getting bigger boats.”

Their award-winning project – the first time they ever entered an international competition – involved creating an enclosure for a 55-foot Sea Ray Sundance on Lake Lanier. “The clients wanted more room on deck to enjoy their boat, so we created it for them,”

An escape from the corporate life and all the snow, along with the short 4- to 5-month boating season, drove the young family with small children south to Atlanta, where they settled near Lake Lanier. When they decided to move to Georgia in 1996 for a longer boating season and warmer weather, Chris’ parents moved too and partnered with the couple for four years in the company The Boat Doctor Marine Canvas Specialist Inc. In 2000 the couple changed the name to Craig’s Marine Canvas Inc. and haven’t looked back.

he said. “We made the design with less metal showing and plenty of light coming in.”

Today, they continue to work with individuals, marinas and boat dealers on Lanier. Their children Matthew and Jessica are grown now. Chris and Craig continue to stay busy constructing boat enclosures for houseboats and cruisers, as well as covers and some upholstery.

They’ve worked on fishing boats, runabouts, houseboats and cruisers. Each job is hand-crafted.

“Every boat is different, and you can’t buy the parts we make off the shelf,” Craig said. “Clients send us their ideas and we work together to create a finished product that they’ll be happy with.”

Craig’s Marine Canvas also creates prototypes for companies around the world. “Inventors come up with ideas and we fabricate them,” Craig said. “We can’t talk about those projects, but we help them move to the next level.”

For fun, the couple has separate hobbies. Craig’s a dedicated salt-water angler and Chris is an avid tennis player. When asked if Craig would ever learn tennis, the response is quick and almost simultaneous.

“You know, we live together and we work together,” Chris said. And Craig finishes her thought: “I don’t think it would work very well for us to share a tennis court together.”

Locally grown Buttermilk Pie sells pastries nationwide

By Jane Harrison Fresh Georgia pecans, syrup and sugar simmered into caramel, and a buttery, flaky crust that crumbles in your mouth are the ingredients that have made Amanda Wilbanks’ Caramel Pecan Pie a nationwide favorite.

The Georgia-grown and educated 26-year-old ships her pecan specialty and other delicious filled pastries from her Gainesville business to clients around the country. And the door at Buttermilk Pie is open to sell a slice to passersby lured by the rack of pies at the front counter.

Named for the first pie she made from her mother-in-law’s recipe, Wilbanks’ business is the epitome of locally grown. Locally grown seasonal fruits – apples, peaches, tomatoes – bubble in a substantial pastry made daily in Wilbanks’ Broad Street kitchen (behind Schlotzky’s Deli). The University of Georgia business

school graduate grew up in Habersham County where her mother and grandmother’s home cooking graced the family table.

“I grew up with cooking,” Amanda mused in mid-December while arranging delivery of 15 pies to Macon. “I’d always made cobblers,” she said, until her mother-in -law, Sandy, taught her to make pate brisee, a butterbased French pie crust. Pleased with what came out of the oven, she decided to share with her Gainesville neighbors on Blue

Ridge Drive. Her husband, Alex, couldn’t let a pie leave the house.

Wilbanks sold her first pie in October 2012 at Gainesville’s Mule Camp Market and sold out of pies at Dahlonega’s Gold Rush Festival the next week. She and Alex pondered, “Maybe we’re onto something.”

“By Christmas, I sold a lot of pies out of the house,” she said.

“It kept growing. We went from one oven in the house to three ovens. My husband said maybe we ought to look at getting a space.”

With the help of her father, Brent Dalton, who runs a heating and air business, the family set up the bakery in downtown Gainesville. Wilbanks combined her culinary skills and marketing acumen to build the business and spread the word on social media.

Huatulco is a secret Mexican paradise As the curtain parted in my suite at the exquisite Quinta Real Resort in Huatulco, Mexico, the predawn colors were as abundant and diverse as those of a light beam passing through a prism. It seemed each degree of angle in the rising sun over the islands and beaches in the Bay of Tangolunda unveiled a new and exciting visual feast for the senses!

The name Huatulco comes from the Náhuatl word cuaúhtolco, meaning “the place where the wood is adored.” It is said that 2,000 years ago, in the time of the apostles of Jesus, the native Indians of this area saw an old, white man with long hair and a beard in an overcoat arrive from the sea.

He arrived carrying a beautiful timber, like a cross, which was unusual and amazing to the people of the area. When he departed, the man told them that the holy timber should remain on the beach. Due to these events, large pilgrimages of native Indians from many places would come to the beach to admire the holy timber. Therefore, it seems appropriate to tell the story of Huatulco just after the Christmas season.

In the mid 1600s, the region was used by Hernán Cortés to distribute the produce of his farms along the coast, which turned Huatulco into an extremely active port. This attracted pirates during the second half of the 16th century, including Drake and the famous Thomas Cavendish.

For more than 20 years, Huatulco has served as the perfect getaway for native Mexicans looking for a gorgeous destination to enjoy a romantic holiday, but few outside of Mexico even knew of its existence. Recently, however, knowledgeable travelers from the USA and Canada have ventured into this secluded section of Mexico. Due to the new influx of international tourists, Huatulco now offers a number of diverse activities and trips for every taste.

Many choose a frolicking trip on one of the tour boats that sail frequently from Santa Cruz Harbor to view the nine bays and numerous white sand beaches of Huatulco. Instead, I would opt for the eco-adventure tours into forested countryside via ATV or horseback. This is an excellent way to observe the local flora and fauna in a forest area that is protected as a nature reserve.

was a visit to the Finca La Gloria coffee plantation in the nearby mountains. A virtual kaleidoscope of nature unfolds all around, and it is easy to see the changes in plants and trees as the altitude increases. Numerous birds, lizards, armadillos and multicolored tarantulas are seen before passing through an ancient village after an hour of driving. This small village has existed and remained untouched for more than 400 years, and has a church that dates back to the 1600s.

Before going on to the coffee plantation, we took a side trip to visit a magnificent waterfall near the headwaters of the Rio Copalito. Several Mexican families were enjoying the cool waters, diving from the rocks or swinging from a rope into the pool below the falls.

At the plantation we were shown the process of the coffee from its cultivation to the final product. The best part of the visit to the plantation, however, was an Oaxacan style, freshly prepared lunch by the owners.

At the Quinta Real Hotel, we enjoyed plush accommodations, fantastic service, scrumptious meals and hospitality that is rarely matched anywhere in the world! Because the hotel is perched high on a hill overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean, the vistas alone are among the best in Huatulco. In retrospect, I was wrong to have judged Mexico harshly before I had visited Huatulco. This gem that is located south of Acapulco on the Pacific rim is a bastion of ecological-friendly development, natural beauty and historical interest, which makes

this hidden treasure one of Mexico’s finest destinations!

Singleton Marine’s first fall leaf cruise/low country boil a success

By Pamela A. Keene On a cool sunny day late last year, Singleton Marine Group hosted its first-ever fall leaf cruise and low-country boil for customers. Nearly 25 boats, ranging from 21 feet to 50 feet, made the four-hour cruise from Holiday Marina to the Clarks Bridge Olympic venue and back. Then, 225 people turned out for fresh-steamed low-country boil and a chance to socialize with fellow Singleton customers and staff. “This was a

great opportunity for our customers and staff to enjoy time on the water,” said Darren Matthews, general manager of Singleton Marine Group. “Many of our employees didn’t have a chance to get out on the water this past year, so it was a fun time for them, too. This cruise and low-country boil gave us an opportunity to let people know that the lake’s boating season doesn’t stop with Labor Day,” he said. “There’s still plenty of good boating all year long.”

Each pie is made fresh that day after Wilbanks arrives around 6 a.m. to work with her crew of 615 employees. They fill the day’s crusts with many ingredients Wilbanks buys from Jaemor Farms, a family business in Habersham County. “All the produce is locally grown … in our tomato pie, all the tomatoes, garlic and onions come from Jaemor’s,” she said, as do the sweet potatoes in that autumnal treat.

“They taste so much better” Wilbanks said, when the ingredients are grown at nearby farms.

Walk-in customers can grab a cup of coffee supplied by Athens coffee roaster, Jittery Joes. Local companies also do Buttermilk Pie’s packaging and printing.

“Even the sign is locally made,” Wilbanks said. She believes investing in Georgia-grown businesses is akin to giving back to your roots.

Wilbanks said that when she graduated from UGA’s Terry School of Business in 2009, she knew she wanted to own a company. “But I never planned to open a pie company … it’s a passion that turned into a career overnight.”

When her days end after cleanup around 8 p.m. she savors the joy from cooking up her own business. “It’s very hands on. I can’t get out of the kitchen. I love it. I love rolling the dough, making the pies. I love the sales aspect.” She shares that love with 3-1/2-year-old son, Austin, who’s growing up in the pie business.

Wilbanks also gives a nod to her father’s entrepreneurial spirit that helped instill her business and marketing skills. “We’re both so very proud of her,” said her mother, Wanda Dalton. “I’m so excited … she’s worked so very hard.” Asked which of her daughter’s pies is her favorite, she had a ready answer: Caramel Pecan.

Hunters must rely upon themselves or companions to prevent or deal with the two major threats on or around water – drowning and hypothermia. Agent offers 2013 real estate recap and projections for 2014

By Bev Knight Thanks to the high lake levels, recovering economy and low interest rates, the year 2013 saw a healthy improvement in the Lake Lanier real estate market. We’re starting to see a modest return of new construction, Knight and the number of distressed property sales continues to decline.

The inventory of lake houses on the market is substantially lower than in recent years, so there is more competition for the best-valued properties. Consequently, we are moving from a buyer’s market to more of a seller’s market, particularly in the lower price points. Competition among buyers means homes sell for higher prices which drives up all lake values.

Buyers are still price-conscious, but they are somewhat more flexible than they were during the height of the recession.

There are some fixer-uppers selling, but the fact that they are not

move-in-ready substantially affects the price and increases the time it takes to get the home sold.

The Lake Lanier sales statistics through the end of November show a 28 percent increase over the previous year’s numbers. According to the First Multiple Listing Service (FMLS), a total of 214 lake homes with private docks sold in the first 11 months of 2013 compared to 167 in 2012.

The biggest increases were in Dawson County which more than doubled the previous year’s sales, and in Forsyth County which enjoyed a 36 percent increase.

Gwinnett and Hall counties’ sales remained about the same.

Regional home prices in general are on the rise, but the average price of Lanier homes actually dropped slightly from the 2012 average of $480,000 to $471,000 in ‘13.

Contrary to what you might think, this does not mean that individual lake homes actually lost value. That’s not the case. Instead, it’s just reflects the fact that a lot more high-priced homes sold in 2012 which skewed the average price a little higher from a

relatively small market sample. It is estimated that individual Lake Lanier home values rose between four and six percent in 2013.

There are several other statistics that add to the optimism for the 2014 lake market. First, the number of days on the market for lake sales dropped from 224 in 2012 down to 147 in 2013.

In addition, sellers are getting much closer to their list prices up from 92 percent (list price/sales price) last year to 95 percent currently. That improvement is the result of a number of factors.

Sellers are pricing their homes more realistically. Internet-savvy buyers know the prices, features, and history of the lake homes currently for sale. Given the lessons learned in the recession, they are still very price/value conscious and will not buy a house that is perceived as overpriced. Sellers have gotten the word and adjusted their expectations accordingly.

In addition, the lower inventory has created more competition for the most desirable properties.

Not only does that cause the buyers to be less picky, but it ultimately drives prices higher. Other

factors that continue to influence the market include the lake levels that have remained at or above full pool this whole year, interest rates that have stayed low, and the decrease in the number of distressed property sales.

So, what can buyers and sellers expect from the 2014 lake real estate market? There are several economic and financial trends that will impact our sales. Experts predict that interest rates will go up by approximately one point this year.

On a $400,000 mortgage, the payment will go from just over $2000 per month to just under $2300. That will cause some buyers to have to look at lower priced homes.

There may also be changes in the way individuals qualify for loans. For example, depending on what type of loan you are considering, the debt-to-income ratio may drop making it harder to qualify for a higher loans. That means there will be an even bigger buying pool for lower priced lake homes and fewer buyers for high-end properties.

For the first time in a long

while, inflation is expected to be a factor in this year’s economy.

While that is bad news for some aspects of the economy, it’s usually good news for property values.

Going forward, experts are still predicting sustained growth in Lanier home prices between four and seven percent in 2014, especially if the lake level stays high.

The number of homes purchased through non-jumbo loans will continue to grow at a faster rate than the more expensive homes due to the changes in lending rules and rising rates. Sales will continue to be particularly hot in the GA-400 corridor, especially in Dawsonville where the price points are a little lower. Though buyers are still concerned about the depth of the water at the dock, the longer the lake remains at full pool, the less that matters, at least for some people. All in all, the signs point to another great year for Lake Lanier real estate in 2014.
