Glade Reservoir resurfaces in water dispute hearing

By Jane Harrison A water storage idea from Hall County’s past emerged briefly in a federal court hearing last month in Albuquerque, NM. A suggestion to reconsider Glade Reservoir came not from Georgia’s attorneys, but from Florida’s in a plea for the judge to look at ways Georgia might store water and ameliorate flows downstream into Florida.

In the Nov. 7 hearing, Judge Paul J. Kelly, Jr. listened to and questioned attorneys in the 13year-old lawsuit in which Florida accuses Georgia of hoarding water on the river system that flows from the Georgia mountains to the Florida Panhandle.

Kelly is expected to use the 90minute session to help form his recommendations to Supreme Court justices. Although Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir in the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river basin, it did not garner much attention; instead, Florida focused on Georgia farmers’ water use along the Flint River south of Atlanta. Additionally, the Sunshine State attempted to convince Kelly that the price tag to reduce Georgia’s water consumption would not be as high as Georgia claims.

Florida said the proposed 850acre Glades Reservoir in northern Hall County exemplified a feasible idea that the state originally supported. Hall County was actively pursuing the project in 2011 and spent more than $16 million in land acquisition, engineering, legal and consultant fees.

Hall officials withdrew the Glade permit application in 2016 after the state rescinded support and the Corps of Engineers did not include it in the latest Water Control Manual for operation of dams on the river system.

Florida attorney Phillip Perry produced evidence he said put Glade in a former Georgia settlement proposal. “Georgia considered bringing Glades Reservoir online … They were willing to do it, and this was in 2012,” he said.

“This is something they thought was a reasonable, and more importantly, feasible solution.”

Kelly questioned Perry about how much it would cost to put in Glades, to which Perry responded, “Well, Your Honor, they have said their cost would be $803 million, but they proposed it. They proposed that as part of their solution in 2012. We're not asking them to do Glades Reservoir. We have those targeted

measures just as to farming.

We’re not asking them to spend hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Florida brought up a series of ideas it thinks should be revisited, said Chris Manganiello, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Water Police Director, who attended the hearing. “Florida said that since Georgia thought about these in the past, they must be reasonable and affordable,” he said. Florida also alluded to “a whole range of solutions” compiled by the ACF Stakeholders in a water sharing plan in 2015. The non-profit group representing diverse water interests in Georgia, Florida and Alabama put together a consensus proposal that Perry said could send more water to Florida.

Manganiello pointed out this was Florida’s second reference to the Stakeholders’ Sustainable Water Management Plan, which Florida mentioned in its first brief after Supreme Court justices remanded the initial special master’s recommendations and sent the case to Kelly. Observers saw a copy of the document dog-eared and tab-marked on the desk of former special master Ralph Lancaster during a trial he held before making his recommendations.

Lancaster eventually recommended the court deny Florida’s claims because the state could not prove that cutting Georgia’s water use would increase the flow into Florida. He wrote that because See Lawsuit, page 22

Still time to register for the Holiday Boat Parade

By Pamela A. Keene Be a part of a holiday tradition at Lake Lanier on December 14. That’s the date of this year’s Holiday Boat Parade of Lights.

In addition to decorating and entering a boat, participants can sign up for viewing on the water from a 75-foot houseboat.

“Right now we’ve got about 15 boats registered, but it’s still early,” said Richard Pickering, organizer of the event, in midNovember. “Lots of people have expressed interest in participating and even more have let us know that they’ll be attending.

We hope for a good crowd and realize that most people will sign up right after Thanksgiving and the first part of December.”

The parade is open to all types of boats, from dayboats and cruisers to sailboats and houseboats. People can also register to ride on a private houseboat from Holiday Marina for the evening to view the parade from the water. Tickets are $20 per person for the cruise. “It will be bringyour-own-bottle and food for the cruise,” he said. “Space will be limited to 70 people and you can sign up at our Facebook page.”

Proceeds from the parade will benefit the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home and the Hall County Dive and Rescue Team.

“We’re asking participants to line up sponsors for their entry fee,” he said. “Their donations

will be given 100 percent to the charities.

Our committee is paying the extra costs for to promote and run the event as our way of saying thanks to everyone who is participating.”

Boats will marshal at their respective marinas, with the first boats leaving the north end of the lake around 4 p.m. for the parade down the lake. Boats from other marinas will join the parade to Margaritaville at Lanier Islands for judging and viewing at the docks between 5:30 and 6 p.m. The celebration and awards party will take place at LandShark Bar & Grill. “We will have a silent auction and a 50/50 cash raffle,” Pickering said. “Food and beverages are pay-as-you-go for attendees.”

Prizes will be given for the best boat from each marina, the best overall boat, best crew and other categories.

LLA removes three more abandoned boats; legal action possible 12 LAKESIDE

By Pamela A. Keene It’s like the rock song “Another one bites the dust.” The Lake Lanier Association’s Abandoned Boats and Derelict Docks program is on a roll.

In early November, the organization removed another three boats from the south side of the lake. Known as “The Trio,” the three were a sailboat, a pontoon and a houseboat.

“Because of great cooperation between federal, state and nongovernment organizations and successful follow-up by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Corps, these hazardous boats were removed,” said Jennifer Flowers, executive director of the association. “We have been able to proceed with these removals through state funding and community support.”

The impetus behind removing abandoned vessels is the threat to the environment with possible oil and gas leaks into the water, plus insulation, glass, metal, gas cans, trash and other debris.

“The association had been working to identify the owners and progress with removal of these vessels since March,” she said.

“The houseboat had no hull identification number or registration number; the Corps declared it hazardous debris, clearing it to be removed from the lake, dismantled and taken to the landfill. The other two had registration numbers and were impounded by the Corps of Engineers.”

Over the past 18 to 24 months, the Abandoned Boat and Derelict Docks program has added stronger enforcement and follow up because of cooperation with the Hall County Solicitors Office.

James Watson carries on as interim manager at Olympic venue

By Jane Harrison About 15 candidates applied for the management position at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, but the Gainesville Parks & Recreation Department is no hurry to fill the position vacated by Robyn Lynch in August.

Parks Director Kate Mattison said former assistant manager James Watson “is doing a great job” as interim division manager at LLOP. Watson, a former paddler with the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, has worked at the park for several years, first with initial LLOP manager Morgan House and then

with Lynch before she resigned to take a position with the Gainesville tourism department.

Mattison described Watson as being “very passionate” about the park he’s known from the inside out. He has applied for the job opening.

The city has gotten applicants from the Lake Lanier area as well as from Florida, Mattison said.

Candidates’ backgrounds range from experience in water sports to parks management to tourism.

Mattison said the city hopes to put a new hire in the position by spring, when activities pick up at the park.

Gainesville City Manager Bryan Lackey previously said there’s no rush. “The main thing is to find the right person.”

The search team includes members of the Lake Lanier Park Foundation (formerly Gainesville-Hall ’96) who revived activities at the former Olympic site.

The 35.5 acre park, developed originally for canoe/kayak and rowing events in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was recently annexed by the city. LLOP became a cityowned park in July and is managed by the Gainesville Parks Department.

Take a dip into new decade in Polar Bear Plunge

The Lake Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club’s 21st Polar Bear Plunge is set for noon on the docks behind the Lake Lanier Olympic Park boathouse.

LCKC President Jackie Hutton urges those with cold feet to jump on in. “Try something new to start the year 2020 and knock this one off your bucket list,” she said.

An alternative: about 60,000 years ago two sub species branched off from the human race, Homo Sapiens Houseboatian and Homo Sapiens Blowboatian.

So today these two species coexist more or less in harmony wherever there is water. The major difference is that Houseboaters never leave the dock unless they have an auxiliary generator running to power the TV, refrigerator/freezer, washer/ drier and of course the Waring Blendor.

Sailors on the other hand will be out on the water whenever there is a puff of air from any direction. They don’t require anything but a set of sails and optimally a cooler full of beer and ice.

Last month I was fairly confident in telling you about the weather patterns I expected to evolve as a result of not having an El Nino or La Nina to deal with this winter.

I continue to look at some of the winter weather events of significance when we have had the neutral conditions that are evolving now.

You may remember Snowjam ’82. I know you will remember this winter event.

How about the Blizzard of ’93! Yes, that occurred during neutral conditions like we are experiencing now!

To answer your question, no, I am not predicting another epic, history-making, winter weather event like the Blizzard of ’93. I am also not ruling out that possibility. Look at what happened last month on the 12th. 148 record low temperature records were broken across the United States when that first blast of cold Arctic Air bore down on the nation’s heartland and spread into the Southeast. I have also been seeing what is likely going to give us a colder than normal winter.

It has to do with what is going on in the eastern Pacific Ocean. From time to time in the news, you may have seen reports on the abnormal heat that has been occurring from California to Washington. It seems there is this massive area of high pressure that has now taken up residence in the eastern Pacific Ocean and has been giving the western states a westerly wind instead of the

the Corps controls water release from the dams, there was no guarantee Florida would benefit. In a 5-4 decision, justices ruled that Lancaster used “too strict a standard” for Florida to prove its case. Kelly was appointed special master in August 2018.

The hearing presented case followers their first look at Kelly, whose demeanor Manganiello described as professional and undeferential toward either side. Kelly kept his prescribed schedule, allowing each state 45 minutes, with Florida allowed to reserve 10 minutes for rebuttal. “There was nothing brand new, nothing new popped up,” said Manganiello, a long-time observer of the 2013 lawsuit.

Much of Florida’s argument focused on Georgia farmers’ irrigation from the Flint River and its groundwater. Georgia officials knew there was a problem as early as 2000, Florida claimed, when it exercised the Flint River Protection Act and bought back irrigation permits from farmers when drought was imminent.

However, it did not follow course before and during the 2012 drought, when oyster fisheries in

Kelly asked Florida attorneys if they agreed that Florida has the burden of showing that the benefits of a decree in Florida’s favor would substantially outweigh the economic harms to Georgia.

Perry replied, “They know they can fix the problem, and they can do it at a reasonable price, too.”

He added that water efficiency solutions would cost the Georgia government but would not be a significant burden on farmers themselves.

Florida also accused a Georgia expert of miscalculating Georgia’s cost of cutting back water use. Previous Georgia testimony set that estimate at $350 million.

Georgia attorney Craig Primis argued that any benefit to Florida from Georgia cutbacks would not substantially outweigh the cost to Georgia. He also claimed Florida inflated its estimates of Georgia water use. “Using (Georgia expert’s) data, we know that Georgia’s consumption is a fraction of the amount estimated by Florida,” he said.

Kelly questioned Primis specifically about Georgia’s water

consumption and future limits.

“Let’s say that Georgia doesn’t waste any water and that they are very efficient when its consumption continues to increase. At what point does the consumption become unreasonable, assuming no waste and very efficient?” he inquired.

After Primis evaded a direct answer with “there’s a lot that goes into that question,” Kelly rephrased it: “At some point do you say to Florida, “Well, I’m sorry, there’s no more water for you because we’re using it all efficiently, and that’s just the way it is?” Primus responded, “Well, I don’t think we’re going to get there.” He added he didn’t think there is enough farmland left to develop and that there is a current moratorium on new irrigation permits.

Several times Kelly asked Primis what burden Florida should show in order to get what it wants, which is a limit on Georgia water use at current consumption. “Clear and convincing evidence that the benefit to Florida will substantially outweigh the harm to Georgia,” he See Lawsuit, page 23

I’m not qualified to even describe all the causes of this human ailment but it is a real challenge when a person begins to lose the sense of balance with the aspect of adverse water surface conditions.

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene s the first female commodore of University Yacht Club in its 69year history, Lisa Herndon Wilson takes her leadership position in stride. From the time she was a child spending summers on Lake Murray, South Carolina, and on that state’s coast, she has made Wilson boating a major part of her life.

“Growing up with two brothers, I was on the water from the beginning,” said Wilson, who also holds a U.S. Coast Guard “Six Pack” Captain’s License.

“My dad built his first boat when I was three and made sure I was comfortable and proficient around boats. He instilled my love of the water from an early age.”

Today, she and her husband Jimmy Wilson, continue to make boating the focus of their lives.

Married since 2015, they have known each other since they were pre-teens growing up in Columbia.

“My aunt was his second mom and he was best friends with my first cousins,” she said. “And, he was my first kiss when I was 13 years old. We dated off and on, but he married someone else and so did I. It wasn’t until much later and through many life events that

A graduate of Furman University with a degree in business, she earned a Master of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University. For 31 years, she worked in telecommunications, including as director of International Projects for BellSouth Mobile Data; director of Market Research for Cingular; and Direction of National Real Estate Administration for AT&T Wireless.

Jimmy recently retired from 30plus years in field sales.

Her work with AT&T and the Bell Companies brought her to Atlanta, where she and her late husband David Herndon joined University Yacht Club and the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron.

Leading roles on Lanier They began boating on Lake Lanier and each of them served in leadership roles in both organizations. Herndon, who had served as a commander with America’s Boating Club Atlanta and a Governor at UYC, passed away in 2011, but Lisa continued with boating and service to both organizations.

“My parents were members of the Lake Murray Power Squadron,” she said. “I always saw what a great organization it was, so when Dave and I were looking for a hobby and a place to find great friends in Atlanta, it was a no-brainer and we joined in 2002.”

She served in the leadership of America’s Boating Club for nearly a decade, culminating in commander in 2011 and she remains active with the group on both a local and national level.

Wilson holds the highest educational level of Senior Navigator with America’s Boating Club.

In 2013, she decided to pursue the rigorous US Coast Guard Captain’s License. “It was something I always wanted to do,” Wilson said. She traveled to Charleston for the preparatory classes and testing. “In a class of about 20, I remember only one other female. It was like a crash course, but all my classes and education with the Power Squadron, now America’s Boating Club Atlanta, truly prepared me well.”

Wilson is a champion for boating education. “It is especially important for women to be confident on the helm and to understand the workings of the boat and how to be safe on the water,” she said. “Many times, the man drives the boat, but women should be equally knowledgeable.

What if something happens to the captain? Women need to be prepared as well. Boating doesn’t depend on physical strength. The key is to use your smarts, be calm behind the wheel and have the ability to make sound and safe decisions.”

Helping create virtual trainer Several years ago, Wilson was national project manager for America’s Boating Club, developing the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer, a simulator that recreates opportunities for testing and honing on-the-water abilities. The organization displays a unit at the

Atlanta Boat Show annually. Nationally, there are more than 30 units available across the country.

“Over six years, the US Coast Guard has invested more than $1 million in the development of the trainer program through America’s Boating Club,” she said. “A year in development, it’s now in its sixth software version and our seventh grant cycle. It has been invaluable in training and education. This has been an amazing partnership with a number of groups and agencies.”

At University Yacht Club, Wilson served on the Board of Governors for two years and then was selected by the Nominating Committee and elected by the membership to join the bridge, which included a year each as Treasurer, Secretary, Rear Commodore and Vice Commodore before being installed as Commodore. “Currently we have two female governors and six male governors, but I’ve come to realize that whether you’re male or female, everyone at University Yacht Club is very supportive of leadership. It truly takes a village, and everyone works together to accomplish so much.”

She reflected on her coming year as Commodore. “UYC has so many wonderful programs, from the Junior Sailing and Sunset Series to a year-round calendar of social and boating events,” she said. “I love seeing that the club is multi-generational. Early members are now grandparents of members, and their young children are growing up here and learning to love the water.”

Music a part of life, too She has four stepchildren and

four grandchildren whom she and Jimmy visit often. In their spare time, the couple enjoys boating, dancing and traveling. Lisa’s love of music keeps her busy playing French Horn in the Atlanta Wind Symphony, playing piano in the UYC chapel and singing. She is also an avid photographer.

“Our grandchildren and children light up our lives,” she said.

“And Jimmy and I certainly consider our boating friendships our greatest treasures. Life takes many turns, and I am blessed to embark on this next stage of my life.”

University Yacht Club was founded in 1951, several years after ground was broken on Buford Dam. Today it has more than 250 members and their spouses. It presents annual Independence day fireworks on July 3 over Lake Lanier, as well as a full calendar of events for members and guests.

In addition to Wilson, the officers for 2020 are Tom Shirey, vice commodore; Mark McQuaid, rear commodore; Bret Benninghoff; Steve Simpson, treasurer.

Board of Governors who began serving in 2019 are Mike Bruce, David Leaycraft, Dale Owens and Marvin Willis. The 2020 Governors are Mike Lee, Joanne Mocny, Jeff Sample and Rochelle Starkey. The 2020 appointed officers are Craig Wolf, fleet captain power; Kent Rogers, fleet captain sail; Donna Mathis, fleet surgeon; the Rev. Bruce Shortell, fleet chaplain; and the Rev. J. Caleb Clarke III, assistant fleet chaplain.

“After I graduated from North Georgia College in 1999 with a business degree, I realized that I had an interest in marine structures, docks and marinas,” Wiegand said. “With several years of dock repairs and a few new construction projects, and soon I became a certified welder and the business just continued to grow.”

By 2005, he expanded Boat Dock Works to provide shoreline erosion control and installing rip rap. “We got a couple of barges and now we are a 20-employee company. We couldn’t have grown and been as successful as we’ve been without them.” The company also builds sea walls and shoreline steps, does dredging, and offers jet-ski ports, boat lifts as well as other dock accessories.

Wiegand is quick to point out that the success of Boat Dock Works is the result of many people’s hard work. “The company wouldn’t be where it is today

without the great employees over the years and the customers who have believed in us. Our business has been based on referrals and word of mouth, and that’s the best kind of advertising there is.”

Additionally, Wiegand and his company contribute heavily to improving and protecting the lake and its resources. “For many years, we’ve supported the Lake Lanier Association and Shore Sweep, helping remove tons of trash and debris from the lake,” he said. “Giving back and supporting organizations around the lake is good for everyone.”

The company also partners with the Lake Lanier Olympic venue, recently rebuilding the starter gate system for the facility.

“We have been responsible for installing, operating and maintaining the system for major events, include the Pan Am Games and other high-visibility events,” Wiegand said. “We are really proud to be associated with the venue. The system is one of the few in the nation and it keeps Lanier in the forefront as one of the world’s premier destinations for competitions.”

building the Chattahoochee Country Club marina, sea wall construction at Longwood Park for the City of Gainesville, and major upgrades at Lanier Islands.

Wiegand admits that docks, boating and the lake has changed since he started Boat Dock Works.

“Docks have evolved on Lake Lanier over the years,” he said.

“Back in the ’60s and ’70s, docks were typically built good and heavy, then lighter materials became available and were more efficient to build. Now with the dynamics of the lake, bigger boats and the larger waves from wake- and surf-boating, and unpredictable weather patterns and water levels, we’re getting back to heavier structures.”

Knickerbocker Dam project nearing completion 46 LAKESIDE

By Pamela A. Keene Coming in under the proposed budget of $1.8 million, the improvements at Knickerbocker Dam are planned to be complete by the end of the year. The dam separates Knickerbocker Lake from Lake Lanier north of Chattahoochee Country Club in Gainesville.

The dam was originally built in the early 1950s.

The City of Gainesville first approved the project in 2015, but it was not permitted by the US Army Corps of Engineers until 2017. The Corps oversees both Knickerbocker Lake and Lake

Lanier. Then the project went out for bids, and Griffin Brothers Inc. general contractors of Maysville was selected to complete the work.

“We got the Notice to Proceed in early April of this year, but the lake levels were too high, so we delayed the start until the fall,” said Barclay Fouts, construction and project management section chief with the Gainesville Department of Water Resources.

The work began a couple of months ago and included removing trees and roots, re-grading the slopes of the earthen dam, installing rip rap and building new

concrete headwalls and slabs. The construction resulted in intermittent lane closures along East Lake Drive.

The original corrugated 24inch metal pipe has been sliplined with a plastic pipe to extend its life.

“The work has made a big difference in the area,” said Chris McGauley, project manager with the Department of Water Resources. “And it has restored the former functionality of the dam.

The fees were to have been increased to $835 for a five-year permit. The Corps had announced

the increase in June. Letters were mailed to permit holders announcing the increase.

According to the South Atlantic Division’s Post in late October: “U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is delaying the implementation of fee increases for shoreline permits in the South Atlantic region while U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters conducts a national review of the shoreline management program

The Lake Lanier Association issued an email notifying members of the change.

“For many of our On-lake initiatives such as Abandoned Vessels and Docks, Rip Rap and Solar Lights, we work closely

with the Lake Lanier Corps of Engineers Project office,” the notice said. “The Corps are good partners and willing to come to the table and work with us on issues that affect the Lake Lanier.

This ongoing partnership has shown that we can get more done for our water resources if we work together. We hope that the South Atlantic Division recognizes this need for partnership and transparency going forward.”

When it comes to making your home more eco-friendly and energy efficient, there are endless options. You don’t have to go all out all at once, either. Even taking small steps like changing out frequently used plumbing fixtures and light bulbs throughout your home can make an impact. If you’re not sure where to start, just reach out to a local remodeler familiar with green design for some advice.

Watching a colorful sunset over the Cumberland River from the Riverwalk in Downtown Clarksville, Tenn., is unforgettable! Less than an hours drive north of Nashville you will discover a historic town that is famous for its diverse and picturesque walking and bike trails, a fabulous golf course with plenty of wildlife, a park dedicated to a natural cave, a civil war fort, a skyline of unique spires and mouth-watering eateries!

If you arrive in Clarksville in the evening, as I did, find the Cumberland Riverwalk as the sun begins fading to the west. This 1.5 mile riverfront trail, which will be extended in the future to connect with well-known Clarksville Greenway, has spectacular views along the wide and rolling Cumberland River. Both dogs and families love it, and the sunsets are inspiring!

For golfers in your group, I would highly recommend the beautiful and challenging Swan Lake Golf Course that is owned and operated by the City of Clarksville. Swan Lake is an 18hole, 6,065-yard course located at beautiful Dunbar Cave State Natural Area.

This par-71 course features Champion Bermuda grass greens, hybrid 419 Bermuda fairways and tees and features a dining facility.

It also supports a very healthy population of deer and other friendly animals for those who bring their cameras.

Directly across Swan Lake from the golf course is Dunbar Cave State Park that has a set of interesting walking trails ... including one that dissects Swan Lake. tory of ancient Indians and the early settlers are found in these cave walls.

If you love hiking or biking through gorgeous forest areas, the more than five mile Clarksville Greenway follows an abandoned railroad bed cut through limestone bluffs on the outskirts of Clarksville north of downtown. It meanders along a creek and through a path canopied with large trees that are often shrouded with kudzoo. The greenway establishes a buffer along the Red River and nearby streams, while providing a habitat for diverse plant and animal species.

Another great place for hiking or mountain biking is Rotary Park which is about 10 minutes from downtown Clarksville. The trails here are more rustic and much harder to navigate, but have an abundance natural beauty including a beautiful stream. The park has more than five miles of trails and a large playground for kids.

Many refurbished downtowns are not done well and become quickly boring, but Clarksville’s historic restoration is not disappointing. Most shops are locallyowned, diverse and quite interesting.

options. The absolute best for me, however, is the Blackhorse Pub and Brewery! This local watering hole is pure Clarksville! It is popular both for its great menu and its locally famous brews on draft.

Following a great dinner, I fell for the Big Cookie, which is a gooey chocolate chip cookie pizza topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. This place is a family-friendly restaurant and a hangout for enjoying the excellent draft beer!

Clarksville is also the birthplace of Olympic Champion, Wilma Rudolph, the winningest basketball coach of all time, Pat Summitt and the current quarterback at the US Naval Academy, Malcolm Perry. This Tennessee town is home to the huge US Army base at Fort Campbell and to Austin Peay State University, which always produces great sports teams.

Unfortunately for me, I just had a few days to sample all that Clarksville has to offer, so my suggestion is to consider this fascinating place more as a destination than a day or weekend visit.

I found the people of this area to be both friendly and helpful, the natural beauty spectacular and the outdoor adventure possibilities practically endless!

Georgia DNR offering wildlife viewing grants • Calendar

The state Department of Natural Resources is seeking proposals for its Wildlife Viewing Grants Program. Deadline to apply is Jan. 15, 2020. The DNR is targeting projects that help Georgians enjoy and better understand animals, plants and habitats emphasized in Georgia’s State Wildlife Action Plan.

The six projects approved last year varied from a viewing scope and platform at 4-H Tidelands Nature Center on Jekyll Island to a chimney swift tower and information kiosks at Talking Rock Nature Preserve in Pickens County and monarch and other pollinator habitats and outreach at Gwinnett County parks.

The grants are capped at $3,000 per project and made possible through the Georgia Nongame Wildlife Conservation Fund, which is administered by DNR’s Wildlife Conservation Section.
