Supreme Court to hear water dispute case January 8

December 2017

By Jane Harrison U.S. Supreme Court justices will hear oral arguments Jan. 8 in the long-running dispute between Florida and Georgia over water in the river system that includes Lake Lanier. Justices will listen to and question objections Florida raised to a Special Master’s report that denied Florida’s requests in a 2013 lawsuit. After more than two years of pre-trial discovery and a lengthy evidentiary hearing, Supreme Court appointee Ralph Lancaster recommended last February that justices deny Florida’s request to limit Georgia’s water consumption and pay reparation for alleged environmental and ecological harm to Florida’s water interests downstream. The federal court invests a lot of credibility in Special Masters’ findings and often concurs with them. However, exceptions are granted, as has been the case in at least one other case Lancaster worked on for the court. Georgia officials rejoiced after Lancaster’s report, while Florida attorneys filed exceptions, including an assertion that the Special Master erred in his statement that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ discretion in operating its dams on the rivers prevents a

remedy to Florida’s water woes. Lancaster wrote that since Florida did not include the Corps in the lawsuit, the federal agency could not be bound to allow more water flow into Florida, even if a court order limited Georgia’s water consumption and resulted in more water to send downstream. However, Florida attorneys pointed to a section of the Corps’ recent operation manual for the river system that stated it would take any legal, congressional, or states’ agreements on water allocation into account and possibly adjust its water operations. The U.S. Justice Department’s amicus brief filed Aug. 8 on the Corps’ behalf took exception to Lancaster’s finding and noted that the Corps could potentially change operations on the river system after a lengthy public hearing process and environmental review. In the Jan. 8 hearing, Florida attorneys will plea for what they have called the Apalachicola region’s last chance for survival. The lawsuit alleges Georgia hoards water on the river system and harms Apalachicola Bay’s oyster fisheries, which need fresh water to produce. Georgia officials and Lake Lanier advocates

claim the Sunshine State’s desire to cap Georgia’s water use would thwart economic development and threaten the lake’s water level. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the river system that reaches from the Georgia mountains to the Florida Panhandle. The Supreme Court is expected to make relatively quick work of the case that has taken years to make it to their courtroom. According to SCOTUSblog.com, the official online Supreme Court blog site, the court usually allots “one hour of argument time for each case, with each side speaking for 30 minutes.” Since the Solicitor General requested and was granted time to speak regarding Florida’s exceptions, he or another lawyer from his office, will get 10 minutes to talk. Justices frequently ask questions or request elaborations during oral arguments. Much of the hearing time is actually dominated by responses to justices’ inquiries. Attorneys generally reserve time from their presentation to rebut arguments from the opposing side. Justices generally hold a private conference later in the hearing week to vote on how to decide the case. The senior justice in the majority appoints a jus-

tice to write the majority opinion; the minority opinion is composed by the senior justice voting on the minority side. Justices writing opinions then share written opinions among themselves, summarizing their reasons. The length of time it takes to finalize an opinion “depends on several factors, including how divided the justices are, which justice is writing the opinion, and the court’s schedule,” according to the overview. “Typically, all cases are decided by the time the court recesses for the summer at the end of June or the beginning of July.” Decisions are announced in open court. Justices will get an earful of water arguments Jan. 8. Before they commence hearing Florida and Georgia’s dispute, they will listen to the Justice Department’s exceptions to a special master’s ruling in a Texas Vs. New Mexico and Colorado lawsuit regarding a water compact between the states. Georgia and Florida have each spent more than $40 million in the legal action. Both will rely on the same Washington, D.C. based attorneys they employed during the preliminary period. Craig Primis, of Kirkland & Ellis, will See Dispute, page 23

Corps hosts stakeholder meetings as part of recreational master planning

By Pamela A. Keene In mid-November, three groups of Lake Lanier stakeholders met with officials of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the beginning stages of input for the update of the Lake Lanier Recreational Master Plan. “This is the initial phase of what will take a couple of stages,” said Tim Rainey, project operations manager for Lake Lanier. “Our goal is to have this completed by 2019.” The Corps held three meetings over two days with three stakeholder/constituent groups – special interest groups, including the Lake Lanier Association, the organization promoting seaplane landings on the lake and others; commercial operators, including marinas and dock builders; and representatives from local government. “Their input is really for us to be attuned to the issues we need to look at,” Rainey said. “And from these meetings we’ll frame and categorize these issues for further study or to take action. In some cases these will be beyond the scope and authority of the Corps’ work, but we will help refer those topics to the appropriate groups. They will all be addressed in some way.”

Rainey said that the next step in the process is holding public meetings to identify topics for further study. Those meetings are planned for the first quarter of 2018. In the summer, the Corps will do a carrying capacity study (number of boats, docks, etc.) to assess the water area and how lake usage can be managed going forward, using both fly-overs and boats. People in the parks will also be conducting surveys of visitors. Later in 2018, the Corps will meet with stakeholders again, then hold a second round of public meetings in late 2018 or early 2019 to review findings and continue the master plan process. “Water is an important part of the plan update, and we’re also considering various aspects of land usage, including wildlife management and environmental stewardship,” he said. “Our intent is to gather science-based information and data to be able to make the best decisions for the next 30 years and what’s going to happen at Lake Lanier. The goal is to protect the lake for future generations and achieve the best balance to consider all aspects for the lake, environmental stewardship and the public.”

In addition, keep someone on the front deck casting a buck tail jig as you pull baits. Rico’s World Kitchen named ‘Best Diner in Georgia’

By Pamela A. Keene The website Pure Wow has named Rico’s World Kitchen in Buford Georgia’s Best Diner. Opened several years ago in a converted gas station on the south end of Main Street, Rico’s serves food billed as “World Comfort Cuisine.” Owner Rico Cunnington was surprised. “They didn’t notify us, and I found out about it when someone tagged me on Facebook about it,” he said. “I’m not really sure what the classification of a diner is, but it’s a good thing.” Rico has worked in an around Lake Lanier for nearly two decades. He opened Rico’s World Kitchen about 10 years ago and The Brunch Apothecary two years ago in Dacula. Both specialize in hand-crafted

made-from-scratch cuisine. He began his restaurant career at Lanier Islands’ PineIsle Hotel (since demolished), working alongside his mom Nett who was a cook there for 22 years. “I told him ‘Don’t you ever be a cook, because it’s long hours,’ ” she said. “But I’m really impressed with the way he’s put everything together. He had the passion and he loves to please people. He doesn’t want people to leave hungry.” In addition to a diverse menu, Rico’s serves hand-made specialty cakes that Nett creates. One of the most popular is the Avocado Cake that is made with fresh avocado. Cake selections change throughout See Rico’s, page 19

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK

The polar bears return; plunge is back in 2018

By Jane Harrison The chill is on for 2018. Polar bears will return to Lake Lanier Olympic Park Jan. 1 to start the new year off fresh and cold in the Polar Bear Plunge. The annual rite is back after a low lake last year muddied the landing site where celebrants traditionally leap into Lake Lanier. As of late November, with Lanier’s level down about five feet from winter full pool, the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club hoped to line up participants on the docks behind the boathouse. “If lake levels continue to drop, we may move the location to the tower side,” said Tracy Barth, LCKC president. Much to the dismay, or relief, of traditional jumpers, LCKC cancelled the event in January 2017 when a10-foot deficit made taking a dip behind the boathouse or Olympic channel, the deepest accessible water at LLOP, a bit of a risk. Aware that the necessity of breaking the 20-plus year tradition may have broken the momentum (or promoted a warmer, fuzzier, and drier way for the white bears to welcome the new year), LCKC is daring folks to take the plunge in 2018. “We would love to see this event become a more prominent commu-

nity event,” Barth said. “We encourage plungers to issue challenges to community service groups, government officials, businesses, schools, etc. Polar Bear, if you dare!” “We are enlisting the help of our members, news outlets, social media, and friends of the club to help spread the word that we are back in business. Our target is to attract at least 100 plungers with the goal of surpassing this.” Those who brave the challenge can warm up with showers on the boathouse side, if the water level holds, or outdoor heaters on the tower side. A festive New Year’s lunch of hot chili, warm drinks, and everybody’s favorite – brownies – will warm the body and soul during the award ceremony at the boathouse. Special honors will be presented for the best costume, best splash, best jump, oldest polar bear, and

Giving back at Magical Nights of Lights this year 16 LAKESIDE

December 2017

By Pamela A. Keene The Williams Family is known for its benevolence, often supporting charitable organizations behind the scenes throughout the year. So, in honor of the 25th anniversary of Lanier Islands’ Magical Nights of Lights, the family has designated a number of ways that visitors to the 7-mile sparkling holiday light display can save money and help noprofit organizations at the same time. “This year, we’re giving back in more ways than one,” said Mike Williams, CEO of Lanier Islands. “We’re offering some of our lowest admission rates in recent memory – just $35 per vehicle when purchased in advance online and $45 per vehicle at the gate, no matter the night, plus special pricing and a chance to make donations of toys and nonperishable foods on designated nights.” Children, teachers and members of the military are the benefactors at this year’s event with opportunities to give and to receive. • Georgia Mountain Food Bank Mondays – December 4, 11: Bring five cans of non-perish-

able food and receive admission to Magical Nights of Lights for just $25/vehicle • U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Tuesdays – December 5, 12: Bring an unwrapped toy and receive admission to Magical Nights of Lights for just $25/vehicle • Education Appreciation Wednesdays – December 6, 13: Georgia teachers and school employees can show their school ID to receive admission to Magical Nights of Lights for just $25/vehicle. Retired and active members of the U.S. military, police officers, firefighters and first responders need only show their valid ID at

the gate to receive a special admission rate of just $25/vehicle every night of the 2017 Magical Nights of Lights season, which runs through January 3, 2018. This year’s Magical Nights of Lights, includes carnival rides, Holiday Village with Bucky’s Gift Shop and Santa’s Workshop, seven miles of sparkling holiday light displays and festive food. “We’re so excited about going back to our 25-year tradition, as well as adding even more glittering fun this year,” said Missy Burgess public relations director for the Islands. “We hope everyone will come out and join us, and that they will purchase their tickets online to save even more off our new low price.” To purchase tickets for Magical Nights of Lights or for more information, visit www.lanierislands.com. Celebrate New Year’s Eve Lanier Islands rings in the New Year with Party Nation Band at Peachtree Pointe Pavilion, just outside the gates of the resort. “We’ve moved the celebration so that we can accommodate more guests this year,” said Burgess. “The evening will have a Great Gatsby theme and with

City of Buford leases Lanier Harbor property By Pamela A. Keene The City of Buford signed a lease with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for management of the former Lanier Harbor Marina property off Buford Dam Road. The lease was finalized about 18 months ago, according to officials at the Corps. “This is an ‘as is’ lease and as of now the City of Buford has not submitted an updated master plan to further develop the property,” said Tim Rainey, project operations manager with the Buford Dam Project management office. “We are grateful that the city has taken over the park so that

it can be used for the public.” The lease with the city covers the same footprint as the Lanier Harbor Marina lease. “The city has done some initial cleanup and we’re considering options,” said City Manager Bryan Kerlin. “Our primary goal was to preserve the property, and that’s what we’ve done.” Kerlin said that the city has not set a timeframe or budget for any improvements or changes to the property. “Right now, we’re allowed two day-use docks,” Kerlin said. “We are glad to be able to preserve some of Buford’s history.”

Continued from Page 12 the week. Rico’s is famous for its food and its hospitality. “It’s because of our staff and my wife Katie that we’re successful,” he said. “I’m also really thankful for Nate Ogden, who’s been a friend of mine for many years. He’s retired now but he really helps me out.” Ogden frequently sits in the front room at Rico’s. “He’s there almost more than I am, and several people have thought he was Rico,” Cunnington said. Rico’s recently hosted a fund-raising fish fry to

help defray costs of Nate’s knee surgery. “People came out and really helped. Our servers even donated all their tips. It just meant so much to us that people came out to support him.” Rico’s World Diner in Buford is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Brunch Apothecary in Dacula is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Forecast calls for La Niña making a visit this winter It’s pretty hard to believe that another year has come and gone, but here we are in December! We have certainly had another “interesting” year of weather, capped off by that insane hurricane season. After a fairly warm and benign October, November held few surprises as above average temperatures continued with a fairly dry pattern. We did have that nice cool blast just in time for Thanksgiving. I think it felt a little more festive this Thanksgiving than last. From what I have seen, we should be looking at yet another pattern change this month. I am seeing above average temperatures returning. However, we are in a pattern where we could see cold air damming. La Niña will frequently bring a shallow layer of cold air into northeast Georgia with Hall County the “bullseye.” It makes temperature forecasting much more challenging. While Atlanta could see temps near 70 in the so-called “cold air wedge,” Gainesville may be in the 50s. Anyone who is involved with Lake Lanier is also tuned in to rainfall. We are all aware of the lack of rainfall we have seen in October and November. It now appears La Niña will keep us in below average rainfall this month too. Even my longer-range models taking us into spring, keep us drier than average. During the late fall and winter, we always see the Corps of Engineers draw the lake level down. This year was no excep-

tion, despite all the predictions of a drier winter. This is very Glenn concerning since we rely on the winter rain to Burns replenish the lake. Going from a dry winter Lanier into an expected drier Outlook than average spring could result in the lake level remaining very low. Summer is always hit and miss with rainfall so we could be facing drought conditions by June. Nothing is etched in stone but these are the trends I am seeing and these are the trends we have seen with past La Niña events. As we head into winter, which officially begins on December 21st, everyone always wants to know if I think we will see snow. There is always that chance but my bet this winter is for ice. As I have explained, we’re in a La Niña, favorable for the cold air wedge. With a classic wedge, warm moist air is coming in with with southwest winds, over the top of the shallow cold air coming in with northeast winds. This gives us, more often than not, drizzle and mist. If the ground, or bridges and overpasses, are below 32 degrees, we will have ice. Downed trees and power lines will be the rule. You might want to prepare now and stock up on supplies, as power outages might last for days. We’ll keep an eye on the weather and I will have an update on any changes in our winter weather outlook next month. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

2017 a banner year for Lake Lanier Association programs, initiatives By Pamela A. Keene The past 12 months signaled a banner year for the Lake Lanier Association, its programs and initiatives. In addition to its longrunning Shore Sweep, which in 2017 removed record-setting 54 tons of trash and debris from the lake, the group continued work toward its stated mission of “Clean Lake, Full Lake and Safe Lake.” “Through our abandoned vessels initiative has succeeded in removing the four big abandoned houseboats that were on our list, and we’ve made great progress with our solar lights, island riprap protection and other programs,” said Joanna Cloud, executive director of the association. “Additionally, we’ve been meeting with public officials, including the governor’s office and members of the Georgia General Assembly, to urge them to formulate a state-wide water planning program.” She said that the association is

supporting the statewide plan to address the statewide fresh water supply. “While we’re very pleased with the economic development and population growth in Georgia, a state-wide plan for fresh water to the whole state is definitely needed,” she said. “We hope that the General Assembly will take action by either creating a task force or a committee to address this crucial issue.” The association has continued to expand its board of directors, adding real estate agent Sheila Davis and long-time Gwinnett County and Dawson County official Mike Berg, who now lives in Dawson County. In September the association embarked on a marketing and communications study in partnership with Gainesville-based Forum Communications. “This is the first step in our increasing our outreach, growing our members and reaching the public,” said John Barker, LLA board member. “Forum has already gathered a

According to official U.S. Coast Guard statistics, the major cause of water fatalities is drowning, not collision. The information is a portion of the syllabus for most boating safety courses. There is however something that can be done to prevent and diminish the occurrence of this risk, and that is: wear a life jacket. Through the efforts of the local Lake Lanier flotilla, USCG Flotilla 29, there is now a program stressing safety by placing painted, stenciled decals at boat ramps that read, “LIFE JACKET ZONE.” The program is headed up by dedicated flotilla member and officer, Dan Vaccarro, plus ACE volunteers Tim and Winona Baker. The message (and its location) is a fresh, real-time, bold statement of the benefits of wearing a flotation device. The best way to convey a message, especially one as important as this, is with short but direct visible graphics at the location where it is needed most. It’s very similar in concept to the internationally mandated “No Smoking” stencil on all foreign and domestic superstructures of commercial vessels, especially oil tankers. Florida has a lot of winter visitors who buy second homes with docks. A lot of them came to Harbour Yacht Sales to find a boat. I had a client who fell into this category. He fell in love with a well used 34’ Hatteras Flybridge. I tried to talk him out of it but simply couldn’t. So I had him bid low enough to where he could replace parts, including an engine. Well, the offer was accepted and he hired my other company, Precision Marine, to handle the job. The finished boat was beautiful, almost better than new. All the sea trials were better than expected. My customer was satisfied. I was, too. About four months later I got a call from the customer’s neighbor. He said the thought the boat was low in the water. I went to check and sure enough, the boat was sunk and on

When is the best time to put my lake house on the market?

By Bev Knight Most people believe that the optimal time to list your house is in the spring. There is no question that spring is the busiest real estate market especially on the lake; but, depending on your home’s assets Knight and liabilities, there may be a better time to list. In truth, lake houses sell yearround, so there really isn’t a bad time; but some times are better than others for certain types of homes. Here are some considerations for the timing of your listing. Most lake buyers want a view of the lake. The better the view, the higher the price tag. If you only have a winter view, you should definitely list after the leaves are off the trees, usually late November. If that time of year doesn’t work for you, talk to your Realtor about taking lake pictures when the view is the best. Then, when the listing does start, at least you will be able to show the seasonal view. Unless you are a great photographer, let the pros take those pictures. It’s

hard to capture a lake view through trees because the camera wants to focus on the trees instead of the view beyond. A professional photographer will have a lens that can focus on the background (view) rather than the foreground (trees). A winter picture is not as valuable as the real thing, but at least potential buyers can see that you do have a seasonal view of the lake. More view equals a higher sales price. So, maximize the view if you can. Homes with shallow water docks are usually harder to sell. Typically, the lake is higher in the summer; so, that might be the best season for your sale. This past year was an exception, but normally the spring rain raises the lake level in time for early summer. Buyers remember the 100year drought and the depressing pictures that were all over the news. You want your cove to look as deep as possible, so it makes sense to take advantage of the highest lake levels. Either way, don’t forget to move your dock to keep it in the deepest possible water. Otherwise, the house will be difficult to sell. If your house falls into the hard-to-sell category for any rea-

son, you may not want to list in the spring. Yes, there are more buyers, but there are also more sellers. Your house will be compared to a higher number of competitive properties and may not show favorably in that comparison. Believe it or not, the best time to sell a home with problems is often in the cold-weather months. Why? Because people who brave the cold are serious buyers with checkbooks in-hand. They have fewer homes to choose from, so they are often less picky. Right now, there is a shortage of lake homes in the lower price ranges. A six month’s supply of homes for sale is considered a neutral market (neither a buyer’s nor seller’s market). For Lake Lanier homes under $500,000, there is just over four months supply of inventory which means it’s a seller’s market. Most recently, local agents have seen multiple offers on reasonably priced homes in this price range. There are fewer buyers in the higher price ranges; so, depending on how high the price is, it is either a neutral market for a midpriced home or a buyer’s market for the highest 10 percent of homes. Don’t be discouraged if

you have a luxury home. While it’s not yet a seller’s market yet, that category of real estate is the healthiest it has been in years. If the economy remains stable and the stock market continues to be strong, we expect that market to be even better in 2018. So what is the best time to list your lake house? Statistically speaking, 37 percent of Lanier homes sold over the course of a year are listed in the second quarter. Following close behind that, 36 percent are listed in the first quarter. That doesn’t mean that the homes close in that quarter, just that they are listed during that time. The busiest months for clos-

ings are about what you’d expect. For homes under $700,000, May has the most closings. For luxury homes above the $700,000 mark, June is the biggest month. That makes sense because higher price homes take longer to sell. For people who have already found their next house, the number of days on the market may be a major consideration. The period with the shortest average number of days on the market is the first quarter. It is still cold during that period, so those buyers are serious about making a purchase. They want to be in the house by spring, and they are willing to act See Knight, page 54

‘Riding by Christmas Lights’ brings holiday cheer

New song debuts at Boat Parade of Lights December 9 By Pamela A. Keene For his special-needs son’s 16th birthday two years ago, singer-songwriter Chip Hullender traded his motorcycle for a golf cart. That fall of 2015, they rode through their Canton neighborhood all fall and when the Christmas lights dotted the houses and lawns, they’d spend time looking at the lights and singing Christmas carols. “I kept having this feeling that the world needed a new Christmas song, and that’s just what happened from our rides,” Hullender said. “The words and the timing of the song were born on those rides.” In 2016 the idea was shared with Stuart Settles, owner of Carrot Igloo Inc. recording studio in Woodstock where he added key-

boards, engineered and produced the song. Settles was joined by Steve Stone from the Atlanta Rhythm Section, who played guitars, banjo, mandolin and dobro. Rodney Mills of Lynyrd Skynyrd and .38 Special mastered the recording. Others joined in production and performing, including singer Mary Beth Benson from Cartersville, Luke Berryhill and even son Benson Dawson, who plays the sleigh bells and triangle. He needed Santa to complete the package, and remembered his friend Derek Dugan from their days at “Full Throttle” motorcycle magazine.

“One day last fall Chip called me and we reconnected,” Dugan said. “He told me the story of ‘Riding by Christmas Lights,’ and wanted to do the video with Santa.” Not only was Dugan Santa in the video, he also designed the CD package. The two plan further collaborations. The song will be played on the Hennessey Transportation entry in the Boat Parade of Lights and on the van that Boat Parade of Lights ride to tour Magical Nights of Lights on December 9. The proceeds from “Riding by Christmas Lights” go to a good long-term cause. “Brandi (Hullender’s wife/Dawson’s mom) and I want to build a community – not just a home, but a whole See Song, page 45

loved and respected him, but for the community as well,” Dugan said. “I’m so pleased to see that the Pirates of Lanier Family Poker Run is still going strong with its leadership and current board.” Becoming Santa Meanwhile, Dugan found a second way to give back to others. “Back in the 1980s, I dressed as Santa for the nursing home where my mom was living and presented gifts with my wife and children. It was amazing,” he said. “Several years later I interviewed for a set manager/production job with a company in Colorado, but the woman interviewing me said, ‘You can’t be a set manager for us. You have to be Santa.’ I guess with my long white hair and long white beard, she had a point. So, 48 hours later in around 2012, I was headed to South Carolina to be a holiday Santa.” In the evenings, in a strange town away from family, Dugan started writing down his experiences with the children, families and older people who came to see him with their wishes and dreams. “I really let the stories tell themselves and then just posted them on Facebook,” he said. “It really helped me realize the calling I’ve accepted of helping people and giving back.” After his first season, his youngest daughter made them into a book for him. “As I read over those stories even today it takes me right back there,” he

said. “With all I’ve gone through, it makes me realize that God put me in just the place I needed to be.” Dugan was recently chosen over 300 submissions to be illustrated and included in a new children’s book that will be published in 2018. The book is being written and illustrated by Russell Ince, creator of several Santa Secrets’ books published and available to the public. “For me being chosen over all of the men I have been mentored by and admire provides validation of my contributions and journey,” he said. While he cannot divulge the story line or name of the book per contract agreements, the link between two major forces in the universe will become apparent. “It’s an honor to represent and keep the spirit alive.” For the fourth season Dugan has been Santa at Lanier Islands. He’s there every day throughout the season, both at Brunch with Santa at Sidney’s in the lodge and at Holiday Village. “I don’t play Santa,” he said. “I AM Santa when it comes to promoting the season and goodwill, and it’s one of the greatest gifts in the world to be part of the continuing legacy, the keeper, representing the true spirit of Christmas.” His wish for people all year long? “Take a deep breath and just appreciate all the gifts we’ve been given. Follow the Golden Rule; it’s not such a complex concept.”

Snow Queen, Mistletoe Market coming to Cherokee Bluffs

By Jane Harrison An Atlanta-area performance troupe is bringing an outdoor production of The Snow Queen to the amphitheatre of Cherokee Bluffs Park in Flowery Branch. The production by Serenbe Playhouse and accompanying Mistletoe Market is set for Dec. 16 at the popular South Hall park. The play, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale that inspired the Disney hit animated film “Frozen,” features music, stunning costumes, and make-up, plus snow fall at the end of the show, according to Stacey Dickson, President of the Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau. The CVB has a new partnership with the South Fulton theater company that performs all its shows outdoors. “Their production company is starting to do traveling shows and recently scouted Hall County for sites. They fell in love with the gorgeous views and scenic setting at Cherokee Bluffs and our awesome Hall County Parks and Leisure office agreed to give this show a try,” Dickson said. “Feedback we are receiving so far is very positive – the website had over 1,000 views in the first week,” Dickson said in late No-

vember. “Grandparents are especially excited to bring their little ones out to create a special holiday memory that lasts. We hope this will grow into an annual tradition for the park. We expect between 300 and 500 people but can certainly hold more in the park.” The Mistletoe Market will feature holiday gifts, decor and specialty foods. Gates open at 10 a.m. with the show at 11:30 (50 minute show with no intermission) then the market will be open until 2 p.m. following the performance. There

will be hot cocoa and other special treat vendors. Dixon encouraged guests to bundle up and bring chairs and blankets to make a comfy perch for watching the show. As far as weather goes – the show is a go even through light rain – this is how Serenbe Playhouse conducts all their shows and they have a very successful track record, she said. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Additional information: www.laniersnowqueen.com.

December 2017

As fall turns to winter and the deciduous trees lose their leaves, your home and landscape look more exposed than ever. The benefit is that you’re left with the “bones” of your yard and can more easily imagine and plan for increasing your privacy options for the spring, summer and fall. For one, December, January and February are ideal times to remove or thin pines, hardwoods and sweet-gum trees. Professional arborists and tree specialists, such as Arbor One in Buford, can come in and remove dead branches, raise canopies to allow more light for your lawn and garden, plus take out sweetgums or pines that may be a hazard to your home in high winds. Tree removal can also open up areas for entertaining or for installing special plantings, like a half-dozen camellia bushes that bloom in the winter or a bed for native azaleas. Or consider removing nuisance trees and replacing them with evergreens or shrubs with interesting textures and foliage. And if you have troublesome trees on the borders of your property, go ahead and get them re-

THE ARTS COUNCIL, INC. ANNOUNCES

2018 ARTS COUNCIL f|zÇtàâÜx SERIES

This Christmas, treat yourself, family and friends to gifts that keep on giving…GIFT EXPERIENCES! The Arts Council proudly announces The Arts Council f|zÇtàâÜx Series 2018. You are the first

to hear about this! This series brings unique opportunities to witness nationally and internationally famed performers, a bevy of musical genres and encounters with inimitable talents with Southern Humorist JEANNE ROBERTSON on January 18, THE YOUNG IRELANDERS on March 6 and 3 REDNECK TENORS on March 27. Southern Humorist JEANNE ROBERTSON – JANUARY 18 – First Baptist Church Sanctuary – 7:30pm.

Southern, family-friendly, nationally applauded, YouTube sensation, former Miss North Carolina, Humorist and Speaker Jeanne Robertson specializes in hysterical comedy, based on her life experiences. Heard daily on Sirius and XM radio and performing live to thousands of people annually, Jeanne utilizes her positively comical style to illustrate that a sense of humor is much more than a laughing matter. It is a strategy for success. "There's just something striking about Jeanne Robertson. Maybe it's her beauty queenesque good looks. Or maybe it's that she's six-feet-two inches tall. Regardless of what it is, once you hear her speak, you'll remember her -- that is, if you can quit laughing long enough to catch your breath." (Southern Lady magazine). All Tickets: $35.

Each and every year the Irish Cultural Academy brings together some of its finest exponents of Irish traditional music, song, and dance as part of one sensational group known as The Young Irelanders. These performers are still in their 20’s and are unique among their peers, in that they are all world and Irish national champions in their disciplines. Whether it be one of the much-loved vocal numbers like Galway Bay, the foot stomping beat of Kerry polkas, or a stirring air inspired by the Cliffs of Moher, The Young Irelanders deliver a performance which transports you to a part of the world untarnished by modernity and breathtaking in its beauty. Tickets: Adult $28 | Senior (65+) $25 | Student $18 3 REDNECK TENORS – MARCH 27 – Pearce Auditorium at Brenau University – 7:30pm.

The 3 Redneck Tenors were top 10 finalists on "America's Got Talent" and have been thrilling audiences since 2006. In the melodic wake of the three operatic tenors comes a new breed of tenors from humbler origins...3 Redneck Tenors - A New Musical Adventure. The musical comedy featuring classically trained veteran artists from Broadway and world opera stages is like Greater Tuna meets Das Barbecu - down home laughs with big city music! “You know you’re a Redneck Tenor if you can yodel in the middle of La Donna E Mobile from the Verdi opera Rigoletto – and not mess up your mullet or spill a drop of Lone Star.” (Fort Worth Star Telegram). Tickets: Adult $32 | Senior (65+) $30 | Student $23. The Arts Council Signature Series ticket includes ALL 3 performances and is ONLY $80, which includes a $15 SAVINGS over individual performance tickets. 7% tax is added to all ticket sales. To order your 2018 season tickets call 770.534.2787 or visiting us online at www.TheArtsCouncil.net and clicking on The Arts Council Signature Series. The Arts Council appreciates your continued support.

Small and mighty arena football comes to Buford

By Pamela A. Keene The field is one-fourth the size of an NFL football field, but the fast action of arena football makes for an exciting game. And folks around Lake Lanier and Northeast Georgia will have a chance to cheer for their very own Atlanta Havoc arena team when it takes to the new Buford Arena in March 2018. The St. Patrick’s Day season opener on against the Florida Tarpons includes a post-play concert by The LACS country band. “The field is the same size as an ice hockey rink and teams play 8-on-8 in this high-energy sport,” said Tim Viens, owner of the Havoc. “The scores are typically double those of college and NFL games. It’s a fast-paced, high-flying, high-scoring family oriented sport.” As a promoter and team owner, Viens plans to make each home game a family experience with all-day tailgating, bouncy houses and kids’ activities, vendors and food. “And it’s much more affordable than taking the family to a movie,” he said. “Our premium seating is $20, and people can save 20 percent by purchasing the full season.” The team has named Gerald “Boo” Mitchell head coach. A

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is a warm Pacific paradise 50 LAKESIDE

As the cooler weather starts to engulf the South, my thoughts drift back to a time and place of warmer temperatures and gorgeous vistas. I can recall sauntering down the long expanse of beach near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when I noticed live splashes where the waves were breaking along the shoreline. Closer inspection brought an even more bizarre revelation! A small school of manta rays seemed to be actually trying to surf the incoming waves, and occasionally, one would become stranded on the beach until the next curl came. After watching the “surfing rays” for awhile, I observed another small, dark creature struggling in the crashing surf. I quickly reached down and caught what proved to be a tiny sea turtle that must have hatched on this gorgeous beach no more than a few days earlier. It was quite docile as I held it and marveled at this beautiful creation of nature before carefully releasing it back into the ocean. These encounters were simply a wonderful introduction to a picturesque Pacific paradise along the Mexican West Coast. In fact, with so many direct or connecting flights now available from Atlanta, Puerto Vallarta is one of the closest tropical areas to the United States. It’s not an island, nor halfway around the world and you don’t have to fly over an ocean to reach this magical destination. Nevertheless, it is half the time and half the cost of going to Hawaii or many of the Caribbean Islands. Despite being unknown to many in the Atlanta area, this part of Mexico is certainly a hidden jewel. It is located about 900 air miles due south of El Paso, Texas, and is protected from the open Pacific Ocean by the Bay of Banderas, which is one of the largest natural bays on the North American continent. The Sierra Madres

mountain range on the bay’s south side holds enough moisture along the coast to create the perfect tropical climate year round. It’s much like Hawaii’s weather but more reliable. The land area around Puerto Vallarta has a distinctly European flavor of cobblestone streets lined with interesting and inexpensive shops and vendors. Surfers from the US and Canada are always a part of the mix, and Latin rhythms seem to constantly drift on the warm sea breezes. An almost hippy-like atmosphere of artistic culture and pulsating warmth in the local people makes this area stand out from all the rest of the Mexican resorts. Though fairly close to the USA, the prices and mood are far away, but the safe environment allows visitors to enjoy both an exciting night life and a secluded sun drenched romantic hideaway. The dress code of the day is no more than a bathing suit and T-shirt, so bulging suitcases are unnecessary. And, since prices are so reasonable, it’s easy to buy all the needed clothing at shops in this area. A tropical vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is not far away and quite affordable. The experience will be unforgettable, and you’ll surely want to return time and again to this crown jewel of

quickly to get the right home. About half of the buyers of lake homes intend to use it as a residence. For those that have school-aged children, they usually prefer to close in the summer to minimize the kids’ stress in changing schools. The take-away from all of these statistics is that there is not just one best time to list a lake house. Problematic homes are more likely to sell in the coldweather months, while top-oftheir-class homes are better equipped to weather the competition of a spring sale. View and water depth matter to home buy-

ers, so you need to decide when is the best time to showcase your home’s assets while minimizing its liabilities. If it’s not clear what time is best for your home, talk to your real estate agent. He or she should know the buying patterns for lake homes like yours. Bev Knight is lead agent for The Good Life Group, Lake Lanier specialists with Keller Williams Lanier Partners. They sell over $30 million in real estate per year, mostly on the lake. For more articles, visit her website at: www.HousesOnLanier. net.

Veterans’ honors for American Legion Commander

By Pamela A. Keene When Steve Adams graduated from high school in Ohio in 1970, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Germany for two years. It was there he met his wife Elke, and his daughter Malinda was born there. Two years after his discharge, Adams brought his wife and young Adams daughter to Georgia, where he worked as a car mechanic; he also loved drag-racing cars. In the 1980s, he joined the American Legion Post 127 in Buford, where he served as the organization’s commander for 22 years, building the post to one of the largest in Georgia with more than 1,300 members. He passed away at home in late October.

Over the years, he received many recognitions, including District Legionnaire o the Year and the Department Legionnaire of the Year. As Department Sargent at arms for more than 20 years, his duties included escorting visiting distinguished guests to the American Legion Department of Georgia. “Steve was a remarkable man, he was greatly and widely loved, and we will miss him,” said his sister Leslie Kennedy. “We are very honored that so many came out to his services and his internment at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.” Steven Douglas Adams, 65, was buried with military honors following a lengthy motorcade from Buford to Canton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buford American Legion Post 127, P. O. Box 377, Buford, GA 30515 in memory of Steven D. Adams.
