By Pamela A. Keene Boats who enter the First Annual Parade of Boats on Lake Lanier will have an evening slip at Sunset Cove and a bus tour of the Magical Nights light display at Lanier Islands. The hotel is also offering a special room rate of $139 on the night of the event, Saturday, December 10.

The event includes a raffle for a 2017 Audi A5 convertible. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each and only 1,000 tickets will be sold. The drawing will take place that evening; the winner does not need to be present to win. Tickets may be purchased online at www.lakelanierparadeofboats.com.

Boats will gather at each marina and proceed en mass in the parade. Winners from each marina will qualify for the final competition. These qualifying boats will each receive a trophy and a free raffle ticket, valued at $100, giving them a chance to win the car. They’ll also be judged to select an overall winner. “Fleets from each marina will be led to the viewing area by experienced boaters,” said Barkley Geib with the Lanier Partners board, which is sponsoring the event. “They are familiar with the lake at this (water) level and will

marshal people through the parade.”

“Bring a new unwrapped toy to the gate for discounted admission on that night,” Geib added.

Lanier Partners of North Georgia is organizing and sponsoring the event. It will raise money and toys for children’s charities in North Georgia, including the Hall County Sheriffs Youth Home and Toys 4 Tots. “Spectators can view the parade on the giant screen at Sunset Cove and have some of the best seats in the house.”

Registration is still open. The entry fee for the parade is $50 for cruisers, sailboats and other vessels. The entry fee for houseboats is $100. Registration includes a reserved slip at Sunset Cove for the evening’s festivities and two long-sleeved commemorative Tshirts. Register at www.lakelanierparadeofboats.com. Tracking trash on Lanier; cleaning up the ‘styrofoam graveyard’

By Pamela A. Keene Another one bites the dust as volunteers from four community organizations tackled the “Styrofoam Graveyard” off Clarks Bridge Road near the Lake Lanier Olympic Park. The Lake Lanier Association, The Hall County Green Alliance, Keep Hall Beautiful and Lake Lanier Olympic Park spent more than 100 manhours corralling the Styrofoam and getting it removed.

“This had been an eyesore for several years,” said Bonny Putney, with the board of the Lake Lanier Association. “By my estimation, we picked up between 15 and 20 tons of Styrofoam.”

The group worked most of Thursday, November 17, to gather the Styrofoam and load it onto equipment and into dumpsters to be hauled off.

Scott Webber of Webber Farm Bush Hogging, Grading and Hauling provided equipment along with manpower for the clean-up.

Putney said that the Styrofoam ended up in the cove because of prevailing winds and the current at that portion of the lake that moved the debris into that location. “It was good for us that it all ended up in one place,” she said.

“That way, we could get out there and easily get it removed.”

Lanier history book should be available in time for Christmas

By Pamela A. Keene If you’re seeking that perfect gift for the person who loves Lake Lanier you should be in luck. It appears the updated and revised book about the construction of Buford Dam that created the lake will be available to put under the Christmas tree.

Historian David Coughlin said late last month that the printer was in the process of sending him final proofs. “Once that’s done it won’t take them long (to print),” Coughlin said. “We should have (the books) by early December, in time for Christmas.”

Coughlin has worked on the revised version for months and in early November sent the new version of “Lake Sidney Lanier: A Storybook Site” to production.

“I’ve added more photographs – over 400 in fact – plus aerials of the construction and updated some of the content,” said Coughlin, who formerly worked as a park ranger for the Corps of Engineers.

The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides Lake level: Down about 10 feet.

Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear.

Temperature: 60s Bass fishing Bass fishing has been good recently. The water temperatures have started to drop with the cooler nights and more seasonable high temperatures. The lake is low so be careful. The cold fronts coming can help. The topwater bite is starting to fade, as expected. We are still seeing schooling fish on some days but these are often just stripers, with a few spots mixed in at times. The stripers, and the spots in some cases, that are schooling right now seem to be focused on the small threadfin shad.

Therefore they will often ignore your typical topwater offerings. Casting a jigging spoon into these fish is one way to imitate the small bait. There are some other options as well, but it just takes some experimentation to figure out what they will bite.

Think small and be creative. We are getting some good fish early in the mornings throwing a spinnerbait on windblown rock and clay points. I look for the Spro

Crankbait bite to pick up soon as well on those same style points.

There are still fish hanging around the brush throughout the lake. They can be caught a number of different ways. A swimbait and a jerkbait have both worked well at times, and we are starting to have good success with both a Chattahoochee Jig and a Shaky Head in the area of the brush as well. With the lake down we look for a great ditch bite as the water continues to cool, so keep an eye out for the bait making their way into the creek arms. That will be the indication to shift your areas of focus. We have started to spoon up some fish out of the timber, or near the timber, in creek arms and ditches in 30 to 40 feet. The process is starting to happen.

We look for this to strengthen, and once the bait gets well established in the ditches, look for the SuperSpin bite shallow in the ditches first thing in the morning to be a predominant pattern. A jerkbait in these areas should work well also.

Striper fishing Striper fishing remains a challenge. The fish have gone nocturnal and the night bomber bite is your best bet. Fish main lake islands, reef markers and under water humps from dusk until 11 p.m. There is an early morning top water bite but it is over by 9 a.m. Look for Stripers to move to over main lake and creek channels during late morning and afternoon. Deploying a combination of free lines and down rods is your best bet during the day. Set your free lines back 70 to 100 feet with Herring or Trout and pull at .5 mile per hour. Try a small split shot on one of your lines and vary your trolling speed to locate your baits at various depths. If you are using planner boards set your baits from 20 to 50 feet behind the boards. Always hang a couple of down rods over the side when you are pulling baits. In addition, put someone on the front deck throwing a Capt. Mack’s buck tail jig; you may pick up an extra fish or two.

Crappie fishing Crappie fishing: Some creeks have a slight stain and since we’ve not had rain lately, these areas can be a degree or two warmer. If you notice bait in these areas, there are most likely crappie in standalone brush piles.

We’ve noticed that a wave of crappie are moving to the shallower stand alone brush piles in the backs of creeks, as shallow as about 10 feet. Since Lanier’s lake level is down, some brush piles are beginning to show above the water line. Even though the tops may be showing, there still may be fish in or around them.

Bigger fish are showing up, and are eager to bite. We recently experimented with a variety of jigs, both soft body and hair jigs, in 1/24 and 1/16 ounce. The color did not matter. The bite should continue to be strong, with water temperatures dropping. Certain docks with brush piles in the middle to the backs of creeks are holding fish, but you may choose to concentrate on the ones that are easier to catch right now on standalone brush piles.

There is plenty of bait out there, and fish are still feeding on

small threadfins, so pay attention to the bait in the creeks you are fishing. Live bait instead of jigs should also work well. If you like long line trolling, this is the time of the year that should produce.

The backs of the creeks are ideal areas for that method, using your trolling motor at higher or variable speeds. Look for flat bottoms in those areas. Double up on the curly tail jigs with two per rod, each with 1/16 ounce jig heads.

Use the short rods in the back of the boat and longer rods toward the front, with two foot differences in length. Your jigs should be running at about eight to ten feet below the surface. If you like to fish with live bait, a slip cork is a must if the fish are at eight to 15 foot depths. Otherwise, a Carolina rig and egg sinkers with swivels on each side using the down line method with crappie minnows should also work.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Polar Bear Swim postponed due to low lake level

By Jane Harrison New Year’s celebrants hoping to plunge into Lake Lanier on New Year’s Day in the annual Polar Bear Plunge have more time to ponder it. The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club decided last month to postpone the popular holiday rite due to low lake level.

“After much discussion with our staff, we have decided to postpone the event until after the lake levels have increased. Given the current levels, it is unsafe to have anyone jump from the docks located in the back of the boathouse as there are many items that are starting to protrude out of the water,” said Tracy Barth, 2017 LCKC president-elect.

She added that moving the docks to the tower side of the venue is not an option since the normally deep channel was also shallowing out near shore.

The event site at Lake Lanier Olympic Park is ringed with red earth. The Olympic docks sit in the mud, about 10 feet down from the platform behind the boathouse. Barth said that the lake levels are so low that LCKC athletes may start launching for practice from the park area.

Barth could not predict when the plunge would be re-scheduled. “We will issue a press release once the levels have increased enough to begin the planning process for the event.

With no measurable amounts of rain in sight and levels predicted to continue to drop, this was the only option,” she added.

Ironically, the club had to postpone the 2016 event because of a high water level. The docks were submerged and water seeped into the first floor of the boathouse when the lake rose to 1075 feet

above sea level after heavy holiday rains.

In mid-November, lake level was recorded at 1061 feet, nine feet below winter full pool and 14 feet lower than last year’s historic December high.

LCKC delayed the 2016 celebration until the waters subsided in early February. Fifty-three participants leaped in for a late baptism into the new year. The 2017 event will be the 20th annual traditional cold water dip.

Folks hankering to wash away 2016 with a chilly lake bath can head to the hills the final day of the year. Cold hardy celebrants can splash into Unicoi Lake at Unicoi State Park in Helen Dec. 31. Participants will gather at 9:30 a.m. and begin the plunge at 11 a.m. The cost is $10 individuals, $30 families, plus $5 parking.

State’s revised wildlife plan now in place A statewide strategy to help conserve hundreds of Georgia animal and plant species has been revised and is being put into practice following federal approval.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decision this fall on Georgia’s State Wildlife Action Plan clears the way for continued efforts and new projects focused on nearly 640 species considered high priorities for conservation.

That lineup varies from bald eagles to gopher tortoises and Georgia aster wildflowers.

The new plan will guide work by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and partners for the next 10 years, said Rusty Garrison, DNR Wildlife Resources Division director. “The Wildlife Action Plan sets our vision and our mission for how we’re going to manage these species,” Garrison said.

State Wildlife Action Plans are aimed at conserving populations of native wildlife and habitats they need before the species become rarer and more costly to conserve or restore. An approved plan also is required by Congress for DNR and wildlife agencies in other states to receive State Wildlife Grants, the main federal funding source for states to conserve nongame – animals not fished for or hunted.

Experts from DNR and more than 100 conservation partners and stakeholders created Georgia’s Wildlife Action Plan in 2005

and reviewed and revised this comprehensive strategy from 2013 to 2015. Using the best available data, the revision includes new details about the status of species, developing regional conservation efforts and emerging issues such as whitenose syndrome, a disease deadly to bats.

White-nose syndrome was documented in the U.S. in 2006, the year after Georgia’s original Wildlife Action Plan was completed. The disease has since spread to 29 states and five Canadian provinces, killing an estimated 6 million bats. DNR has seen a 92 percent decline in bat populations at north Georgia hibernacula over the last three years.

DNR Nongame Conservation Section Chief Dr. Jon Ambrose said the revised Wildlife Action Plan underscores the need for partnerships and more robust federal funding to combat such problems.

“To fully implement what’s in the plan requires resources beyond what our state agency has available.”

This year, an Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies panel representing outdoor recreation, energy companies, academia, wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, sportsmen’s groups and landowners identified the lack of dedicated funding to restore and manage nongame

species as the key to a pending “conservation crisis.” The Blue Ribbon Panel’s recommendations led to the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act of 2016 being introduced in Congress. H.R. 5650 would dedicate $1.3 billion annually in existing revenue from the development of energy and mineral resources on federal lands and waters to the Wildlife Conservation Restoration Program.

The panel said the funds would provide states with the resources needed to implement their Wildlife Action Plans.

Although Georgia is one of the nation’s most biologically diverse states, about 320 species here have such low populations they are state and federally protected.

The revised Wildlife Action Plan lists 349 animal and 290 plant species as high priorities for conservation, and recommends 150 actions to address their needs.

The original plan promoted work such as prescribed burning, controlling invasive species and restoring native vegetation, enhancing habitats on public and private conservation lands. Survey and monitoring have helped manage populations of amphibians, shorebirds, sea turtles and rare plants. Recovery efforts for federally-listed species, technical assistance for private landowners and environmental education have all benefited from resources and guidance provided by the Wildlife Action Plan.

A quick flashback to this year’s wildfires The date was October 16th, 2016. An approaching cold front began to generate isolated thunderstorms as it clashed with warm tropical air over Alabama. A couple of these storms began to intensify.

As the front moved into north Georgia I noticed our lightning tracker showing about five strikes in western Fannin County over a 15 minute time period.

After producing a tremendous amount of lightning in Alabama, the storms were weakening here in north Georgia. However, there was one lightning strike that hit tree sending sparks into the tinder-dry undergrowth. The ember was blown into flames by the strong thunderstorm wind gusts.

I remember saying to my fellow meteorologists here is Severe Weather Center 2 that I had wished we would see some of that rain in the metro area since we had been so dry since late August. I did not think much more about it until the following day.

The Cohutta Wilderness area was on fire. It became known as the “Rough Ridge Fire” and Georgia Forestry officials told us it was nearly impossible to reach.

In addition, fire hoses had to be hauled up hill and water does not produce much pressure going uphill. Helicopters tried to dump buckets of fire suppressant on the flames but the ground was too dry and the flames were too big. It was spreading and continued to spread. Forestry officials said

after three weeks they had 10 percent containment. That containment Glenn was mostly the result of Burns back-burning, starting fires to keep the main Lanier fire from spreading. It Outlook seemed to be working but had still consumed some 25,000 acres and it was still spreading.

To the east an arsonist thought it might be fun to set the forest on fire in Rabun County. It became known as the ‘Rock Mountain” fire. The lack of rain and tinder dry brush allowed several other smaller fires to flare up around the state. Things were getting out of control fast. Firefighters were heading to Georgia from all over the country, some came from as far away as Alaska!

Our primary wind direction through the first couple of weeks of November was from the north and northwest. Smoke from the fires in our northern counties moved down across the metro Atlanta area, as far south as Macon and as far east as the Atlantic Ocean, east of Charleston, S.C. The smoke was choking and students were not permitted to practice afternoon school sports outside. There was no recess for many children for days on end. Code Red Smog Alerts were being issued. The smoke of course, was much worse near the source of the fires. That meant no one was heading to mountains to see the fall color, enjoy the fall festivals, or spend money the vendors in these communities depended.

‘Water Wars’ goes to court

By Pamela A. Keene Halloween 2016 will most likely be a date remembered for a long time by the people of Georgia and Florida. It was the start date of the lawsuit filed by Florida against Georgia about water usage in the ApalachicolaChattahoochee-Flint river basin that flows downstream from Lake Lanier.

The case in Portland, Maine, is being heard by a Special Master appointment by the U.S. Supreme Court. Florida is the plaintiff in the matter; Georgia is the defendant. During November, both

sides presented their arguments before the judge. Two representatives from the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper attended several sessions of the trial.

The first week, the Riverkeeper’s staff attorney Kevin Jeselnik attended and for three days during the second week of proceedings, Executive Director Juliet Cohen observed.

Mostly the courtroom was filled with witnesses and attorneys who are part of the process.

Cohen said that it is “unfortunate that this issue has evolved into such intense litigation, rather than

being able to negotiate a settlement of all parties with decisionmakers at the table.

It still leaves the question of whether this case will be the last in a decades-long water wars,” she said. “Any outcome of this case should involve all the parties. The burden of any relief should not fall on any one party; all parties bear some fault.”

A decision it the case is not expected until after the first of the year. The Special Master will make a recommendation to the Supreme Court Justices and they, in turn, will issue their order.

Forecasters aren’t optimistic about drought relief coming any-

time soon. “What we really need is a series of good rain events to put even a dent in this kind of a drought,” he said. “But now, it seems like the drier it gets, the more likely it will continue to stay dry.”

It’s the rule: Watering restrictions in force Parts of Georgia have been declared in a Level 2 drought, as declared by Gov. Nathan Deal in November. Outdoor landscape watering is only allowed two days a week and is determined by odd- and even-numbered addresses. Here’s a list of prohibited outdoor water uses in a Level 2 drought: • Washing hard surfaces such as streets and sidewalks.

• Water for ornamental purposes, such as fountains.

• The use of fire hydrants, except for firefighting and public safety.

• Non-commercial washing of vehicles.

• Non-commercial pressure washing.

• Fundraising car washes.

Those counties assigned a Level 2 Drought Response are: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Athens-Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Harris, Heard, Henry, Jackson, Lamar, Lumpkin, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Murray, Newton, Oconee, Paulding, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Rockdale, Spalding, Troup, Union, Upson, Walker, Walton, White and Whitfield.

Live Nativity highlights Winter Adventure at Lanier Islands The tradition continues at Lanier Islands with this year’s Winter Adventure and Magical Nights. The event includes an open-air live Nativity, staged nightly by Cross Pointe Church in Northeast Atlanta.

The Nativity includes traditional Christmas songs and a narrated account of the Christmas story. It also uses animals from the island’s stables. It will be presented every half-hour from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at no additional charge.

Opening November 18, the Islands’ Magical Lights, the popular 6-mile driving tour through thousands of twinkling light

displays, will cost $45 per carload when purchased at the gate.

New this year, admission to all Winter Adventure holiday attractions will be offered for a single price: $29.99 for people taller than 42 inches; $19.99 for those shorter than 42 inches tall. Guests purchase a wristband that includes the attractions and unlimited carnival rides. Several restaurants and dining options will be open at Winter Adventure.

Pensacola’s Fort Pickens is a national treasure As I stood next to an old, worn cannon on the ramparts of Ft. Pickens and gazed across the bay toward Pensacola watching the setting sun (as Geronimo must have done during his captivity here) I was moved by this special place and the beauty and colors of the fading sun. Though he had been forced to be so far from his native lands, Geronimo must have had similar feelings too.

The great warrior, Geronimo, was born free in America’s vast Southwest during a much simpler time as he described in these words, “I was born on the prairies where the wind blew free and there was nothing to break the light of the sun. I was born where there were no enclosures. I was warmed by the sun, rocked by the winds and sheltered by the trees as other Indian babes. I was living peaceably when people began to speak bad of me.”

Following the War Between the States, thousands of settlers moved West and the U.S. government began forcing the Apaches from their lands. Geronimo was a leader of the Chiricahua Apache, who felt a duty to defend his people’s homeland against the military might of the United States.

He said, “I cannot think that we are useless or God would not have created us. There is one God looking down on us all. We are all the children of one God. The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we have to say.”

Though he and his warriors fought valiantly, Geronimo and his band were eventually captured at Skeleton Canyon in 1886. The Chiricahua Apache were then shipped by rail to Florida. On October 25, 1886, 15 Apache warriors arrived at Fort Pickens.

the fort in direct violation of the agreements made at Skeleton Canyon. To this, Geronimo later said, “I should have fought until I was the last man alive!”

Ft. Pickens was actually constructed in the 1830s and has a long history of service to the nation – including a battle in the War Between the States. Today, this beautiful National Park sits at the end of Santa Rosa Island at the end of a long, narrow road sitting between sand dunes with Pensacola Bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other.

Daily visits are possible for a small fee. It opens the door to so many wonderful endeavors.

These include: fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, birdwatching, picnicking, camping, historic structure tours and ranger-led programs. Lifeguards are on duty 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. during the summer season at Langdon Beach. The visitor center at Fort Pickens hosts a bookstore, and a museum is located near the historic fort. A snack bar is open during the summer season on the sound side of the Fort Pickens Museum. Food services and limited camping supplies are available at the campground store near

On your own, it is possible to tour the historic Ft. Pickens and island gun batteries, hike the several hiking and nature trails in the park, bike the roads in the park and bike the road between the park and Pensacola Beach.

Ft. Pickens and the sugarwhite sand dunes and beaches are also perfect for bird watching. In fact, nearly 300 species of birds have been seen and recorded in this area.

Though Ft. Pickens is off the beaten track for most visitors to Florida, its unique history, gorgeous sunsets, numerous activities and possibilities are certainly worth the extra effort. As Robert Frost said so many years ago: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled, and that has made all the difference.”
