By Jane Harrison Lake Lanier is fuller than it ever has been in summer according to measures taken by the U.S. Corps of Engineers at Buford Dam. As of July 17, lake elevation averaged 1072.57 feet above sea level, the highest average recorded for July. This tops the former high elevation average for that month set in 1974 when the midsummer level averaged 1071.92.

Lake level has exceeded its full pool of 1071 every day since

April 13. April’s average of 1070.97 was followed by an all time high May average of 1072.77. June’s average elevation of 1072.09 tied with 1976 for the second highest June on record, falling slightly off the 1983 June average peak of 1072.18.

The highest level recorded on Lanier was 1077.14 on April 10, 1964 during a two month period of heavy rain over the Southeast.

Lake Lanier usually reaches its higher elevation levels in the spring. This year is an exception.

This year most of Georgia had already been pounded with more rain by mid July than normally falls during an entire year. The National Weather Service reported that by July 17, 57.17 inches had been recorded at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, drenching the 30-year annual average of 49.71.

Forecasters believe the drench-

ing is likely to continue with predictions of higher than normal hurricane activity over the Atlantic Ocean through November.

The outlook from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls for a 70 percent above normal hurricane season.

Taking on water requires swift, proper, corrective action Safe boating course set for August 17 Some months ago I read an article dealing with a sinking situation calling for quick and correct action to save the day. My mind spun back to the middle 1990s when I bought a 10-year-old, 38foot Californian motor yacht from a guy in Jacksonville who had it tied up at his condo on the St. Johns River. As part of the deal I had a survey done by a reputable marine surveyor in the area. A few days later I reviewed his recommendations and was satisfied that the boat was seaworthy with no alarming deficiencies that could not be corrected when I got the boat back to Savannah. The deal was finalized, and I had the minor problems fixed in Savannah at Thunderbolt where I planned to keep the boat.

A few weeks later my wife and I returned to Savannah with plans to take a cruse up the ICW to North Carolina to visit friends.

We departed Savannah for the short trip to Hilton Head Island as our next major destination. As we rounded Daufuskie Island and entered Calibogue Sound where you can see the lighthouse at Harbour Town Marina, the boat seemed a bit sluggish with the bow a bit lower than usual. I sent my wife

below to check around and a few seconds later she returned to the fly bridge with the unnerving news that “water was everywhere.” I had no idea where it was coming from but I knew quick action was called for. We put on life jackets and I issued a “May Day” call on the marine radio. Coast Guard Station Tybee immediately answered and began asking a multitude of questions. I thanked them and told them I was pretty busy with a sinking boat and I would get back to them. I was not about to lose a boat I had just bought!

Broad Creek was within sight on my starboard side and I headed for the little entrance to

the creek and eased the boat up on the shore. There was a falling tide. The twin 3208 Caterpillars were still hammering away, almost covered in water by this time. Within minutes a TowBoat US vessel was beside me and the operator came aboard and we found that an engine water intake hose had broken on the port engine, so I shut it down and the water ceased. After an hour or so his portable pumps had cleared the engine room of water and with one engine I backed the boat off the oyster shells and proceeded up the creek to a marina where we stayed a day or so getting things back in order.

Long story, but these things do happen, and they can happen to boats of all sizes, and we see it often on Lake Lanier. One needs to plan for such an eventuality.

With your boat in mind think about the most likely ports of entry for water. The stern plug might be your first thought. If you ever take the plug out while it is on your trailer, always leave it in the boat where you can find it.

Catch more fish by pairing the right lure with correct rigging It’s no secret to seasoned anglers that all in all, soft plastic baits catch more fish than any other lure category. The seemingly endless array of styles, sizes, shapes, and colors can be overwhelming. When it comes to the terminal tackle (hooks, sinkers, swivels, etc) to get these on the end of your line, there’s no shortfall of choices either. Pairing the right lure with the appropriate rigging will certainly increase the odds of having a successful day on the lake. Subtle modifications can make a pronounced difference as well. As I’ve stated many times, one modification by itself may not yield much, while the sum of several extra details will often result in extra bites through the course of a day. I don’t know of any angler who doesn’t welcome that. The first plastic worms hit the angling world at least 40 years ago. Early models came on a pre-rigged harness with exposed hooks along with beads and a small propeller near the line tie. I expect these caught a lot of bass in their day. When softer and supple plastics became readily available, most anglers abandoned the old worm harness in favor of the Texas rig. For many

It’s something that savvy north Georgia anglers have been doing for years – fishing a finesse type worm on a ball style lead head.

Innovations have greatly improved this staple rig. These days, lead heads are made specifically for this technique and that’s important. The proper ones have much longer hook shanks than those traditionally used for plastic grubs. Some versions also offer specialized keepers for giving the worm a perfect angle and separat-

ing it from the eyelet. The Zoom Finesse Worm, Houdini Worm by Yum, and other similar models are all hot for this technique. This set up is versatile and effective from about three feet down to 45 feet or so. If I had to choose one bass catcher, this would probably be it. For proper rigging ensure you are using one of the lead heads made for this technique and attach the bait with no kinks.

Carolina Rig: It’s always good If there is such thing as a second gold standard in fishing plastic baits, it’s got to be the Carolina rig. It could be safe to say that in modern times, no other method of fishing plastics has caught more bass. This technique was pretty much under the hat for a long time. When in my teens, I would read about this technique in some fishing magazines and at times give it a brief try. When Jack Chancellor won the Bassmaster Classic using this method it spread like a wildfire. The tried and true Carolina rig is also known as the poor man’s depth finder because a heavy sinker is the traditional norm and allows one to maintain great bottom contact and detect any cover present.

Continued from Page 10 It differs from the Texas rig in that the bait and sinker are separated. The distance can vary from as little as 18 inches up to several feet. For north Georgia applications where submerged vegetation is not a factor, shorter distances from bait to sinker are a rule of thumb. For many years, a small barrel or crane swivel was the method of choice for keeping the sinker above the hook and lure. Many anglers still use this method. However, many have opted for the Carolina Keeper as an extremely convenient alternative. This tiny piece of plastic is squeezed with pliers to open and easily slides up the line. When released, it clamps down securely on the line without causing damage. The beauty lies in having to tie one knot versus three and adjusting the leader length at a moment’s notice without having to cut off and yes – tie two more knots. This is a very slick time saver in a day of fishing.

Prepare your Carolina rig by cutting off a reserve piece of line and sliding a sinker up the main line. For shallower depths a bullet sinker of 1/8th to 1/4 ounce is a good pick. For depths greater than 10 feet, opt for a 3/4th or one ounce egg shaped sinker. The heavy weights maintain superior bottom contact and create noise attracting curious bass who then notice the tasty morsel just off the bottom a couple of feet back. High floating plastics

are perfect for the Carolina rig. They provide a tantalizing darting and rising action during the retrieve.

Use scent with plastics So far, the focus of this month’s column has been on plastic worms. Don’t forget there are lots of other great fish catching plastic baits in your favorite tackle shop. It’s no secret among those who study tournament results that many pros rely on the basic Texas rig for earning a living. Instead of traditional worms, they typically employ plastic crayfish imitations along with tube and creature baits.

The techniques of flipping and pitching these softly into heavy cover areas are proven the most consistent producers when casting for cash. Both are specialty methods that require practice to achieve proficiency, however the results can be more than worth the effort. One technique that requires a leap of faith is fishing a “wacky worm.” This can be really hot when fish are shallow and even deeper close to boat docks and blow downs. To rig a wacky worm, simply pierce a finesse style worm through the center with a straight shank hook exposed. This is a weightless technique. As the bait sinks, give it the occasional very slight twitch.

Bass fishing remains good. There is some buzz about catching fish in the shallows (up in pockets) very early in the morning. Look for a heavy baitfish presence to make this effective. Anglers are tossing topwater plugs in these areas.

Overall, the deep water structure has been the mainstay which is the norm for this time of year. Small to medium size swim baits such as the Bite Size Herring and others can produce well when retrieved at 15 feet deep or so over suspended brush. Casting over these brush piles with noisier topwater plugs is also a good tactic for raising a fish or two before moving in with with deep water offerings.

On that note, it's hard to go wrong with a finesse type plastic (worm or minnow imitation) on a drop shot rig. For all brush pile patterns look for cover in the 25to 30-foot range as a go to standard. But, it can pay to check things out on a spread of five feet to either side of this range. Your favorite jig or skirted twin tail grub can produce some quality spotted bass when crawled through or near the brush. Expect the deep water bite to remain solid through the month.

Striper fishing is fair. It seems that these schooling fish are not as bunched up as would be normal this time of year. Anglers are having to hit a number of areas to put together a good catch. Live baits presented on down rods have been the key to good catches. Focus your efforts on points near creek mouths. Drop baits 30 to 35 feet deep over bottom depths of at least 70 feet of water. Use a six foot leader of up to 14 pound test below a heavier main line. A two ounce sinker above the leader is standard for summer down rods. A live herring is the bait of choice. It pays to have plenty of fresh bait on hand because it’s very important to keep lively baits on the line. If rainfall slacks off and hot weather sets in, expect fish to congregate in tighter schools.

Lake groups seeks volunteer for water watch program The Lake Lanier Association and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper are seeking additional volunteers to help with the groups’ Neighborhood Water Watch program. The program is different than the existing Adopt-A-Lake program (operated by the Lake Lanier Association) in that it is more focused on creeks and stream tributaries versus the main lake. NWW is also different in that it is testing specifically for e-coli bacteria versus Adopt-A-Lake testing for Chlorophyll a. Chlorophyll a is more of an indicator agent providing information on a wide variety of bacteria forms which is more appropriate in the larger lake areas.

NWW program volunteers are

asked to take water samples on Fridays. Ideally, the groups would like samples to be taken weekly, but, at a minimum, it need samples done every other week.

Samples must then be transported on ice to the main LLA office building in Gainesville for testing. The samples have a six-hour shelf life, meaning no more than six hours can elapse between the time the sample is taken, and the time the sample is tested, in order for it to be valid. The sampling procedure itself is very simple and can be done from anywhere with good, safe water access. The sampling does not have to be done from a personal dock, it can be done from a public boat ramp, bridge, or simply from the shoreline.

Below is the list of available creeks and tributaries. The groups would like to get volunteers that can commit to at least a year of testing at a particular location.

While highly effective, these baits are loaded with salt and tear easily. One secret of pro anglers who employ this deadly method is the use of an O ring. At your local automotive store purchase O-rings that just fit over the center of the plastic bait in use. Instead of piercing the lure, pass the hook point under the rubber ring for great results. Well stocked tackle shops even offer these rings paired with a tool that makes rigging a breeze. Earlier it was mentioned that a combination of details can boost your catch.

You may want to give some of the following enhancements a try.

When using a traditional Texas rig, replace the lead sinker with one of brass and add a fired facetted glass bead between the weight and lure. This produces crisp clicking sounds during the retrieve. In heavy cover, use a self pegging weight to create an even more snagless rig for better penetration. Always use scent products with plastic baits or use scent enhanced products such as Berkley Power Baits or Gulp. Invest a little extra money in premium super sharp hooks such as XPS,

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC VENUE Funds budgeted, board approved, LLOV money not yet disbursed

By Jane Harrison As of mid-July, no checks had been written for the $300,000 budgeted by Gainesville and Hall County governments for improvements at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue. And no date had been set to disburse the money to the non-profit agency whose newly elected board is to decide how to spend it at the aging 1996 Olympic site.

“It’s there (in the budgets),” said Lake Lanier Rowing Club President John Ferriss, long time leader from one of the two clubs that have kept the venue afloat with regattas, training programs, and community activities. “But right now, everything is like it has been for 15-17 years,” said Ferriss, cautiously optimistic that the public funding will come through.

Both governments approved fiscal year 2014 budgets that included $150,000 from each to be disbursed to Gainesville/Hall ’96, the organization that was instrumental in bringing rowing and paddling Olympic competition to Lake Lanier. The group, originally headed by Jim Mathis and Steve Gilliam, revitalized last spring and in July elected a new board to guide the venue through its next phase.

The funding passed without objection from officials or citizens at budget hearings in May and June. Although the funds are written into the budgets, the actual money may take a while to reach the venue, where officials from each club are eager to work with GH ’96.

City Manager Kip Padgett said a formal agreement between the city and GH ’96 remained to be approved. “When the council approved the city budget, it was noted that the money was placed in their contingency for the purpose of the venue so it is there for GH ’96. The council cannot give the money to the organization without a formal agreement between them and the city that lays out what the money will be used for by GH ’96, Padgett wrote in an email.

He added that the Parks and Recreation Agency will represent the city in discussions with GH ’96.

“I don’t know when the council would vote on something, nothing has been presented to the city yet. However, when an agreement is reached the Parks and Rec Agency will be the ones bringing it forward to council for their vote,” he said.

The money allocated by the city comes from $120,000 set aside from its general fund operation budget and $30,000 from the Parks and Recreation Agency, which typically budgets that amount for the venue.

The county’s portion is derived from fees collected from marinas for the Parks & Marina Fund.

reported that the money has been set aside and is anticipated to go to Gainesville/Hall ’96. “Exactly how those funds will be disbursed from the county to the foundation has yet to be determined,” she said via email.

Both the city and county have representatives on the new GH ’96 board. City council member Ruth Bruner is a long time public supporter of the venue who focused on it during her inaugural speech when she was mayor in 2011. County Commissioner Scott Gibbs, in whose district the venue is located, has noted the economic impact large events at LLOV have on Hall County. He remarked about the venue’s income benefits for the county after he attended one of its largest events, the Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival, in 2011. The festival is returning Sept. 14.

Other GH ’96 board members include Kit Dunlap, Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce; Stacy Dickson, Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau; Deb Gregson, City of Gainesville Tourism & Trade; Phil Sutton, LLRC; Kevin Seitz, LCKC; and at large community representatives Mike Banks, Jonathan Collins, Mimi Collins, Darla Eden, Rob Fowler, Morgan House, Phillip Sartain, and Dixie Truelove. Non-voting members approved are Melvin Cooper, Gainesville Parks & Recreation, Mike Little, Hall County Parks & Leisure, Bill Donahue, Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, and (as of July 12) unnamed officials from LLRC, LCKC, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

LCKC paddlers win at International Regatta

By Jane Harrison Lanier Canoe & Kayak athletes dominated senior canoe events and took top spots in kayak races at the Lake Placid International Regatta July 6-7.

The best sprint paddlers in the U.S. and Canada competed in the New York regatta.

Ion Ross won the men’s 1000 meter individual canoe race and paired up with Ben Hefner to take gold in C2 1000. Ross, Hefner, Rob Finlayson and

Changes afoot for Home Town Spirits

Continued from page 16 “I’m excited about the next phase of the venue,” said Mathis, who anticipated a potential check presentation ceremony late this month. He praised city and county cooperation in budgeting money for GH ’96 to make improvements at the venue whose docks sag from nearly 20 years of use and the facilities lack adequate heating, air and restrooms.

Mathis expected the board to formulate a strategic plan that will include hiring a venue manager to coordinate events, oversee and promote the facilities, and serve as a liaison between entities tied to the site at Clarks Bridge Park.

Upgrades at the venue have been an objective of Vision 2030, an arm of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce that set long term community goals. Although talks about polishing what’s been called a “diamond in the rough” have circulated for years among tourism boosters, public officials and LCKC/LLRC members, nothing came of them

until this spring.

Funding for the venue appeared on local government budget proposals after Mimi Collins, who chairs the Vision 2030 Olympic Venue, gathered officials for a tour of the venue in early spring.

The boating clubs whose members have devoted countless volunteer hours to LLOV cannot put plans for upcoming events on hold for long. LLRC President Ferriss said he’s already been contacted by officials from two large regattas that want to return next spring.

LCKC Office Manager Brenda Miller said USA Canoe/Kayak plans its national championship there in early August 2014. And a crowd of 5,000 or so is expected for the dragon boat festival, run by LCKC, next month.

“We’re excited” about getting funded, Miller said. “This is a positive step. We look forward to working with (GH /96)” LCKC President David Haack echoed her remarks.

“That’s awesome. I see good things coming from it.”

By Pamela A. Keene Home Town Spirits, the popular beverage store and community partner on Spout Springs Road, has new owners. And with the change in ownership, the store will be undergoing a number of changes.

“We’re going to be even more user-friendly with lower prices and a new store layout,” said Ron Patel, who has been in the business since he was 17. When he was in high school, he worked at his father’s beverage store in Newnan. He and his family have owned Gwinnett Package in Duluth for 12 years. “We’ve always wanted a second store, and this location is perfect.”

Patel said that he’s changing out the store shelving, expanding the beer and wine offerings and relocating the check-out area.

“All the shelves will be shoulder high so we can see the customers and be better able to help them,” he said. “We’re also going to take advantage of our 50-door cooler by adding more craft beer lines and changing them out more frequently. We’ll be showcasing craft beers.”

he’s purposely expanding the store’s bourbon offerings to have the largest selection in Hall County.

Green’s Tavern will remain open. “They do a great job and we’re happy to have them next door,” he said.

One of Patel’s business partners is taking the store into the technology age by capitalizing on social media. There will be a new Twitter account and Facebook page by the end of August, as well as a mobile application for

tablets and smart phones to allow customers to learn about featured items and specials. They will also be able to order online, then pick up and pay for their orders at the store.

Brent Barwick opened the 110,000-square-foot store in October of 2003. Former employees Sandy Merickle, Jeremy Patterson and David Mele have stayed on.

Time to give your boat a mid-season checkup With the rain we have had, some boats’ auto-bilge pumps have been working overtime. All boats are subject to mildew and mold in the continued damp weather we have had. So when we have a few dry days it would be wise to air out P.F.D.s and storage areas to stop mildew, mold and smells that come with it. West Marine has products that will help with the job. Make sure your storage areas are completely dry before re-stowing gear.

When you inspect your bilge, look for standing water. While down there check hoses and lines and repair or replace where needed. Continued dampness aboard can eventually affect the boat’s electrical system, electronics and engine gauges. The more maintenance you do now will prevent down time on those sunny days when you want to cruise.

The rainy weather has meant that many of us haven’t used our boats. Now many fuel tanks have old fuel in them. You need to add a fuel stabilizer treatment such as Stabil, Startron or Valve-Tech.

This could keep you from having down time on that next cruising day.

Let’s hope that the remainder of our boating season is filled with great memories and no problems.

Optimist Prams Last month’s cover shot showing the University Yacht Club’s Optimist Prams sailing brought back memories of Clearwater Bay in Florida. That was one of the waterfront areas I was raised in.

Clarke Mills (a local shipwright) drew up the plans for the Prams and they became very popular.

Clearwater probably had 50 to 60 Prams in their fleet. Each Pram was sponsored by a local business. The sails, which bore the businesses ad or logo, were many different colors. It made a colorful scene during Clearwater Bay weekends.

I never sailed one, as I was too busy water-skiing. I’ll bet if Lake Lanier could get enough business sponsors they could have a similar Pram fleet to teach youngsters how to sail.

Boating safety statistics The U.S. Coast Guard says boating fatalities for 2012 totaled 651. This is 14.1 percent lower than the 758 in 2011. The total amount of reported boating accidents dropped to 4,515, a decline of 1.5 percent. Hopefully this decline is because of education and not the recession which caused less boating use. Unfortunately

the majority of drowning victims were not wearing a P.F.D. New laws require that age 13 and younger must wear a properly fitting P.F.D. Adults on board should provide a good example and wear one too. Boating classes and smart boaters will make these statistics continue to decline and make boating safer for everyone.

Water-ski clubs Several Sundays ago I got a surprise when I opened the local paper and found the Sunday Magazine, “American Profiles” cover had a water-ski show routine picture on it. I used to be a member of that club.

The club is the Minoqua Bats in Minoqua, WI. The club is more than 50 years old and is still putting on shows every week in the summers. Most clubs have 50 or more members. Most shows have jumping, ballet, bare foot, kites and pyramids. One club does a five-tier pyramid. That’s got to take a lot of practice.

Brother and sister Tom and Janie Dorwin won the mixed doubles one year when in their final pass they stepped off barefoot, which had never been done in mixed doubles. They were members of the Minoqua Bats. According to U.S.A. Water Ski in Polk City, FL, there are 66 amateur show ski clubs. Some clubs use 40 skiers in their pyramid.

Dick Pope founded Cypress Gardens in 1940 and for half a century it was the water-ski capital of the world.

Well it brought back a lot of memories for me, and I hope in your travels you get to see some of these dedicated skiers perform.

America’s Cup update American’s Cup is not living up to its billing as one of the biggest and best events in California. The Cup is being held on San Francisco Bay and is supposed to generate $1.4 billion in economic impact. The “Artemis” team from Sweden capsized over a month ago and tragically resulted in a fatality. Their new boat is several weeks from being ready and they don’t like some of the new rules that were put in place to make the boats safer. New Zealand’s entry

Blame the rain on the Bermuda High After so many years of reporting drought conditions and low lake levels, we have seen a remarkable and dramatic recovery. I realize we have not had the best weather this summer, however, I happy to report an extremely healthy rainfall surplus of over 15-inches for the year! Every single north Georgia lake is at full pool. The underground water table has been replenished and lawns and gardens are green and lush, even in these Dog Days of Summer.

You are no doubt wondering what brought on this change and the end to our drought. It all has to do with the Bermuda High. In the winter months, the Bermuda High is called the Azores High. It’s a semi-permanent high pressure area that, in the winter, migrates to the Azores in the eastern Atlantic.

In the summer, it migrates into the western Atlantic and centers over Bermuda. It is the same high pressure area that causes most hurricanes to ride around its western flank and up the Atlantic Coast, hopefully remaining offshore of the Atlantic seaboard.

This summer, the Bermuda High has set up a little more to the west than usual.

At the same time, there have been massive areas of low pressure to our west, centered across Texas. (Texas has also been in a severe drought but has seen some good rain

this summer.) These low pressure areas have a counterclockwise wind Glenn flow pattern. So we Burns have the Bermuda High and the Texas Lows Lanier working like giant atOutlook mospheric cogs in a machine, funneling in tremendous amounts of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, across the Southeast. You combine that kind of moisture-laden air with summer heat and you have an enormous amount of rain. That is also a major concern.

As we now move into the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, my major concern is with the Bermuda being a little further west than usual, it may funnel in a tropical weather system. It doesn’t even have to be a hurricane or even a tropical storm. A slow moving tropical depression could bring incredible amounts of rain to north Georgia. With an already saturated ground, flooding will be an ongoing concern. There is a little bit of good news.

NOAA has revised its forecast for an above average number of Atlantic storms downward. Let’s all hope the prediction holds.

Congressman announces MOTOR Act at Holiday Marina appearance

By Jane Harrison Proposed legislation by Georgia’s 9th District U.S. Rep. Doug Collins would cut fees paid by some marina-based businesses to a flat rate of 1 percent. Collins unveiled the Marina Operator Tax Obligation Relief, or MOTOR Act, July 26 at Holiday Marina.

The proposal reaped praise from some marina operators.

The act would lower the rate paid to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by marina restaurants, gas docks, and engine dealers from its current level, which ranges between 2 to 4.6 percent of gross revenue at each marina.

Collins said MOTOR would provide relief to small business owners who sublease marina space.

He presented the proposal to Lake Lanier marina officials, Georgia legislators, and local officials.

The Corps returns 75 percent of marina fees to the counties in which marinas are located, according to Pat Robbins, spokesman from the Mobile District Office. The remaining 25 percent goes to the U.S. Treasury.

He reported seven marinas leased directly by the Corps on Lake Lanier paid $1,259,500 in fees in 2012.

Collins’ aide Jason O’Rouke said he did not have the same percentages provided by Robbins and that he would review the breakdown.

Collins said reduced fees might spark restaurant start-ups and benefit businesses already operating. “I’ve been asked why there are not more restaurants and businesses on the lake,” he said. He reasoned that “fees and taxes” discourage entrepreneurship and hurt small businesses. He asserted MOTOR as a “practical method” to lower business costs. He said the act would apply to all Corps lakes and has “good support” from his colleagues.

“For us, it’s a really good thing,” said Alex Laidlaw, vice-president of Westrec Marinas, which operates Holiday and Sunrise Cove marinas on Lake Lanier. Holiday currently plays the top 4.6 rate, which is passed along to the restaurant and small businesses that sublease.

A fee break would help keep people employed, Laidlaw said. Westrec Marinas President Bill Anderson added that it would “allow us to reduce the cost of fuel to boat owners.”

Boating fees raised in Bahamas ... on second thought, maybe not Bob and Carolyn Wilson, aboard Sea Island Girl, continue Lakeside's long running series of cruising adventures which began in the mid-1990s. To date we've had the Johnston family, Jean and Bill Bayman, and Mechelle and Bill Cooksey all contribute to the series. Bob and Carolyn boated on Lake Lanier until leaving for their adventure in 2002.

It is amazing to me that some people just do not get it! The newly elected government of the Bahamas recently sent out a notice that entry fees into the country were being increased again.

Now for a country that depends almost entirely on tourism that was a pretty gutsy move. But with most actions, there is usually a reaction.

July 1 was to be the effective date, but the notice failed to reach many of those affected in a timely fashion and many were caught off guard. Entry rates for boaters were increased 33 percent from $300 to $400 for boats over 35 feet in length. Three passengers are included, any additional would be $20 each. It was as if the Bahamas completely dropped off of the radar screen. Travel plans were being changed and local businesses were left scratching their heads, trying to make sense of it all.

And finally, someone got it!

They realized that while the increased revenue looked good on assembly documents, it would never pass the old check-list method used by Ben Franklin.

It took about a week for everyone to get back on track and almost as quick as it appeared, the new guidelines were rescinded and the entry fees for boaters will remain the same as last year.

Things are still under negotiation regarding increased fees for the airlines and marinas, but I will bet that the Minister of Tourism will

be contacted regarding future proposed changes to the budget.

A modern, International Airport is nearing completion in Marsh Harbour, Abaco and this is where our friends and family flyin during our stays in the Bahamas. Reportedly Delta will have a direct flight from Atlanta, something that has been sorely needed. The locals there have struggled for years to revive the economy by welcoming tourists from around the world, and it would be a shame to have them disappointed once again.

Lanier Tint opens at Lanier to help area boaters, residents combat summer heat

By Pamela A. Keene Carla Smith of Cuming has learned window tinting from a 20-year master tinter.

Now, she’s opened Lanier Tint, a mobile business to serve the Lake Lanier area with window tinting for boats, vehicles, residences and commercial buildings.

“I’ve learned from the best – Eric Kaiser,” Smith said. “I’ve been able to learn about the full line of products to use and how to apply them properly in the right situation.”

She’s opened the business with Kaiser and Chris Meadows, who will be doing much of the marketing and setting appointments.

“We will come to our clients, doing the work at their place of business or home, whichever they prefer,” she said. “A typical car tinting will take two to three

hours.”

Window tinting products and technology have changed over the years.

“People often have a misconception that window film has to be dark to be effective,” she said.

“That’s not the case. In this day and age, we offer film that’s basically clear yet still blocks 99.9 percent of UV rays. These films also block more than 50 percent of the heat and cut out annoying glare.”

Smith is counting on word of mouth and client referrals to build the business.

Midsummer statistics show fewer boat crashes, BUIs on Lanier

By Jane Harrison Boating incidents and arrests for boating under the influence on Lake Lanier were a fraction of last year’s count at mid-summer, while the number of drownings and fatalities remained the same.

Statistics that might indicate a safer summer than in 2012 were reported last month by Lt. Col. Jeff Weaver, assistant chief of Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

Weaver cited the statistics at a July 17 meeting of the Lake Lanier Association Water Safety Alliance. DNR records showed eight boating incidents, 24 BUIs, two drownings, and three boat-

ing-related fatalities by mid-July.

During a similar period last year, there were 26 boating incidents, 50 BUIs, and the same number of drownings and boat-related deaths.

Weaver said the boat-related fatalities this summer were not connected with collisions, such as those last year that brought international attention to the North Georgia lake. Two of this year’s victims fell out of boats. The third died in a tubing accident.

Although he did not directly attribute the drop in boat crashes and BUIs to a rainy season that may have thwarted many wouldbe lake-goers, Weaver said “probably the weather has hampered”

Weaver told alliance members that his rangers are seeing more designated drivers and alcohol awareness on the lake in the aftermath of the new state law that set the legal blood alcohol content level at .08, down from .10. He said efforts by WSA and the Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus supporting a change in the BUI limit and rules that require boater education are influencing boater safety.

LLA President Val Perry believes the alliance’s push for legislation aimed at boater safety has played a major part in diminishing boat crashes and BUIs. He urged Weaver to publicize Lanier statistics to show the difference between last year’s numbers and this year’s midsummer count.

No comment was made regarding the number of fatalities being the same. Contacted after the meeting, LLA Executive Di-

rector Joanna Cloud repeated Weaver’s report that none of the deaths so far this year was caused by boat collisions. “People are safer in their boats. That’s a big, big thing,” she said. She added that the alliance focused its efforts on boater safety in the aftermath of last year’s boat accidents that caused the deaths of two boys in a pontoon boat and another who was struck while being pulled on a tube.

Although the total number of Lanier boating fatalities last year, four, was lower than seven reported in 2011 and the high of eight in 1999, the 2012 tragedies attracted international media attention that painted Lanier as risky for boaters.

“We are very happy to see our efforts paid off” in reducing deaths from boat crashes, Cloud said. She added that water safety is another area where efforts could be made to save lives.

DNR records show more than twice as many people drown in Lanier than are killed in boat-related incidents. Between 1994 and 2012, 75 people drowned; 34 lost their lives in boat accidents.

Other WSA discussion focused

on installation of solar lights on hazard markers and dissemination of boater safety stickers and postcards.

WSA member Bill Tannahill updated members about volunteer efforts to install solar lights on existing hazard markers. The lights would flash during darkness to alert boaters of dangerous conditions. Tannahill said he hoped to begin installation by August near Old Federal Park and to illuminate hazard markers near Van’s Tavern and Three Sisters by year’s end. Corps officer Baggett said he had not been contacted about the effort and that the group would need to confer with him before moving forward.

Members discussed giving out more boater safety stickers. The organization has distributed more than 1,500 of the adhesive cards to individuals, law enforcement agencies, marinas and retail outlets. The stickers that depict safe boating practices can be affixed to boat windshields.

Members also talked about mailing safety related postcards to boaters listed in the DNR boat registration database.

A discussion of new boating laws and how to comply You may be aware that some new boating laws went into effect this year, but understanding what they mean to you may be confusing. I know that when I read the actual laws I felt like I needed a law degree to get my head around it! Thanks to the many resources I have as a member of the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron I was able to get access to more understandable information to ensure that I am always compliant with the new laws. Now I’d like to pass this along to all of you.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources created an excellent resource that clearly explains the laws in plain language, and I’ll recap some of the important issues here.

Boating under the influence laws got tighter. If you are stopped and asked for a sobriety test, refusal can result in your boating privileges being revoked.

If you are tested for sobriety, the limit is now .08 and if you are found to be boating under the influence you cannot operate a boat again until you successfully complete a program approved by the state. You will also be charged with a misdemeanor and could be punished by a fine up to $1,000

On of the biggest changes in the law are the new age restrictions. Effective July 1, no one under 12 may operate a PWC or any vessel over 16 feet or with a motor larger than 30 horsepower.

A child under 12 may operate a vessel under 16 feet that has a motor under 30 horsepower (Class A vessel) if they are accompanied by a sober adult 18 or older.

Children between 12 and 15 years old may operate a PWC or Class A vessel if they are accompanied by a sober adult 18 or older AND have completed a DNR-approved boating education course. They are not allowed to operate vessels over 16 feet or 30 hp at all.

Once a child turns 16, they may operate a PWC or Class A, I, II, or III vessel if they have proper identification. This rule applies to children currently 16 and above, but if you were born before January 1, 1998 and look forward to operating a vessel there is another consideration that applies to you.

In this case you will need to successfully complete a DNR-approved boating education course prior to lawfully operating a PWC or vessel.

Yes, this means that if your child is not already 16, they will be required to complete a boating course before they can legally operate any vessel. Luckily, you have many options for helping your child meet this requirement and the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron’s “America’s Boating Course” is one of your options.

Make plans now to attend our next “Basics of Boating” class as a family. This one-day class teaches boat handling (docking and trailering), safety equipment and procedures, navigation basics (the rules of the road), and boat types and terminology, and much more. The class is approved by the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources and by the

The Dam Store: Family store, restaurant serve area anglers

By Pamela A. Keene Noel and Tony Massey with their blended family of five children were looking for a way to spend more family time together, so they bought The Dam Store in May. They didn’t enter into their new business venture lightly.

The couple had owned a small bait store in Gainesville for several months, then sold it. “It was a little closet-sized store, so now The Dam Store is really what we were meant to be doing,” Noel said. “We’ve had great support from people in the business, including Jamie Koza with Kennesaw Bait in Marietta, and we’re having a great time.”

The Dam Store had been closed for eight months before the Masseys bought it. A mecca for area anglers, the store on Buford Dam Road offers a full line of fishing tackle and gear, along with live bait, including the popular blue-back herring.

The store is open seven days a week, starting at 6 a.m. daily, to accommodate area fishermen. Closing hours are 9 p.m.

“We’re starting to get lots of walk-in traffic,” Noel said. “And people are telling us that they’re glad we’re here.”

The Masseys also opened The Dam Restaurant in early August, serving breakfast and lunch. Breakfast includes biscuits and gravy, salmon patty biscuits and other Southern-style foods. The lunch menu features hamburgers, hot dogs and fish tacos available for dine-in or take-out. Restaurant hours are 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Both Noel and Tony worked “regular jobs” for a number of years, Noel as a dental assistant and Tony in construction. The couple met through mutual friends. They home school their children, and it’s not unusual to see the older ones working at the store a couple of days a week.

“All the kids just love to come down here,” Noel said. “This is a great way for us to spend time together, and owning the store has really helped us shift our priorities to family. God has really taken care of us by having this business and we love it.”

Destination Lake Lanier: Family celebrates heritage and history Shore Lines

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene very three years like clockwork, they come to Lake Lanier from across the US. From the northern reaches of New England to the sunny shores of Southern California, dozens of descendants of the Vikings gather on the south side of the lake for four days of oldtime family fun, reminiscing and plenty of good food.

Who are these people? They’re the offspring – sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Norwegian-born Martin and Bernice Twite who settled in Minnesota, bore nine children and raised them on a farm in the small town of Dawson. Of those children, eight survived to adulthood and had families of their own. Many moved away from Dawson, but every three years this extended family comes to Lanier to visit brother Steve Twite and his wife Della, who live off Flowery Branch Bay. “This is our seventh time on Lake Lanier,” said sister JoAnn Twite Erickson, who now lives in Mesa, Ariz. “We started these reunions back in 1984 to celebrate our father’s 85th birthday and decided to get our family together on the third weekend of June every three years from then on. If it weren’t for these reunions, all these cousins – nearly 25 of them – wouldn’t have a chance to get to know each other. It’s amazing to see all the changes, how they’ve grown up, at each reunion.”

At first, reunions were held in various locations across the country, including New Richmond, Wisc., Corornado, Calif, and

Dawson, Minn. Then in 1994, Lake Lanier residents Steve and Della Twite offered to host the family when their daughter Kirstin married Matt Risse, which coincidentally was in June of that year.

“From then on, everyone wanted to keep coming back to Lake Lanier,” JoAnn said. “The dream for most of us in the family is to have a lake house and Steve and Della are living the dream.

It’s our little bit of heaven.”

Preparation the key Steve and Della spend months each year preparing for their guests. From making arrangements for extra boats – including a houseboat or two – to sending invitations, helping arrange transportation from the Atlanta airport and cooking massive amounts of food in advance, the retired couple revels in getting ready for each reunion. They even order commemorative T-shirts for each reunion.

“This year, we started a little late, waiting until March because we were uncertain about the water levels in the lake,” Steve said. “We only had about 55 people come, but our biggest was in 2003, when more than 75 members of our family were here.”

The families are based at the Twite’s home for activities and meals. They overnight at area hotels, the Whitworth Inn among the most popular, and on the houseboat – this year there was only one, a 53-footer – that’s moored at the deep-water dock in a cove off Flowery Branch Bay. In addition to the houseboat, the Twites this year had the houseboat, two

pontoon boats, a ski boat, a jet ski, a kayak, a canoe, a Zodiac, a water balloon launcher and a paddleboard to provide entertainment.

“The reunion was supposed to start on Saturday and go through Wednesday, but family members started showing up on the Friday before and stay until the Friday after,” Steve said. “We all love the water and this is just the perfect way to spend quality time together.”

Typical reunion days start around 10 a.m. after breakfast as the families gather at the Twite home. Lunches were served at the dock. Steve and Della have enough room, with rented tables and chairs, to set up dinner inside their house. Everyone eats together for each meal, but not until

all have gathered for the blessing.

Although Della has prepared much of the food ahead of time, different family groups are assigned a day to be responsible for set-up and clean-up for all meals and snacks.

“Della does all this work in advance, so it’s really easy for us to come in and help,” said Jacksonville’s Tami Twite Moe. “She used to do it all, but we convinced her to delegate and let us help, and it’s so much fun.”

All the way from Alaska This year the oldest attendee was brother Bruce Twite, 77, from Kodiak, Alaska, who’s the oldest living sibling of the original nine – seven boys and two girls. The youngest was 3-monthold Wyatt Allen, followed closely by 4-month old Dominic Twite.

“It’s always fun when we have babies here,” Della said. “Some of these teenagers and young adults were just babies themselves and we’ve been able to watch them grow up.”

Steve and Della were juniorhigh-school sweethearts in Dawson, Minn., Steve served in the Navy after high school and Della earned her degree in medical technology from Concordia College. After his military service, Steve graduated from the Univer-

sity of Minnesota and taught industrial arts in the local high school for seven years, while Della worked at the Veterans Hospital. They’ve been married 47 years.

A job change to work in the training center at Thermo King in Bloomington, Minn., for Steve led to a transfer to Georgia in 1979, where he worked until retirement in 2005. Della worked at both the Veterans Hospital and then retired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2000.

The couple, who grew up around water and the lakes in Minnesota, bought their first boat – a canoe, which they still own – one month after they married. It was the first in a long line of boats, including seven sailboats, six powerboats and two pontoons.

They sailed and raced in Minnesota, and so it was only natural that they looked to Lake Lanier when they and trailered their Catalina 22 sailboat with them and moved to Dunwoody in 1979.

“Since we’d been racing in Minnesota, we were used to average winds of 10 to 15 knots,” Steve said. “It was a rude awakening to sail on Lake Lanier because many times you’re lucky to See Family, page 51

Involved with the lake The couple were long-time members of Barefoot Sailing Club and Southern Sailing Club, where Della served as vice commodore for a time. They continue to be active in the Lake Lanier Association; they are part of the organization’s Adopt-a-lake program, taking water samples monthly to help assure consistent water quality at Lanier. They also participate annually in Shore Sweep, the association’s lake cleanup. Steve operates safety boats at the Olympic Venue for Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club competitions, starting out as a volunteer for the 1996 Summer Games.

They’re grandparents to six – daughter Kirstin, a dentist in Johns Creek, and and her husband Matt have three children, and son John and wife Allison, who live in New Hampshire, have three children as well. Steve and Della spend as much time as they can with both of their children’s families, going to lacrosse and football games to support their grandchildren locally and visiting their son’s family in New Hampshire several times a year, recently taking them on a whale-watching expedition off the Maine coast.

“You know, these reunions really help keep our family close,” Della said. “And it’s been amazing that all our family comes

from far and wide and make a point to get together. If we didn’t do it, these cousins wouldn’t know each other.”

Tami put it another way: “We all have such a great time together,” she said. “It’s especially good for the younger kids to be able to grow up with their cousins and have a sense of history of their family. It’s something we all look forward to and can’t wait to do again.”

Visitors check out the new Don Carter State Park

By Jane Harrison The opening of Don Carter State Park brought a stream of visitors to check out the first state park on Lake Lanier. Many of those who walked the short paved trail, played at the beach, and picnicked at the pavilion were North Hall residents, like the Jelly family.

“We live a couple of miles down from here … I think it’s a great addition to the county,” said Ellen Jelly, who with husband Tom, son Alex, and family dog, Stella, were among the first visitors when the park opened July 15. “We want to be on the trails.

We plan on bringing (Alex) out here all the time,” Ellen said.

By early afternoon, more than 450 vehicles had entered the park

gates with visitors ready to explore only the third state park built in Georgia in more than 20 years. Tallulah Gorge State Park, about an hour north of Gainesville, opened in 1992; Chattahoochee Bend in Newnan was completed in 2011.

The 1,316 acre park in Hall County offers two short trails, a 1.5 mile paved multi-use trail and a two mile hiking trail. But the park’s jewel is the relatively quiet stretch of the Chattahoochee River on the northern reach of Lake Lanier. A white, sandy beach spreads along a cove where picnickers can gaze out on the water from a pavilion on a grassy hill. Many of the RV campsites edge the woods overlooking the lake.

The lake sparkles below the back decks of most of the eight cottages. The spacious, attractively furnished and fully equipped 2-bedroom cottages are planned to open later this summer. Boat ramps and a nearby fish cleaning station invite anglers to prepare their catch. Some of the walk-in campsites perch within sight of the water.

ever, he was somewhat disappointed that the park has no drivein campsites for tent camping.

Unlike many Georgia state parks, including Amicalola Falls, Unicoi, Vogel, and Red Top Mountain, the newest state park offers no sites for what’s known as “car camping.” And, although the park near Gainesville has been compared with the one at Red Top Mountain, the differences, at least early on, are numerous. The 1,776 acre park on Allatoona Lake near Cartersville has 18 cottages, 15-plus miles of hiking trails, and 92 campsites, many of which are drive-in sites for tent camping.

The only area designated for tent camping at Don Carter requires overnighters to carry their

gear to a walk-in site and is not exactly meant for folks bringing the family tent, sleeping bags, cooler of food, and Coleman stove for an outing in the woods.

The walk-in sites, with a small wood table, fire ring, and lantern post, are situated along a paved trail and are more suitable for backpackers and hammock sleepers than for traditional tents sheltering four or more people.

By early afternoon, Mickey Stanfield was hoping he could cajole his son and daughter to help lug their gear to the closest walkin campsite, number 8, about a 25 yard trek from a parking area.

“They’re having fun in the water … that might help,” he said.

Drive-in tent campsites may be in park’s phase 2 plan

By Jane Harrison The night before Don Carter State Park opened, I crammed my Honda Accord full of camping gear. Intent on being one of the first tent campers at the park, I packed up the old family tent, a couple of sleeping bags, a repaired air mattress, cooler of food, grilling utensils, hammock, camp chairs, tarp, Coleman lantern … all the essentials for a night out in the woods. I planned a traditional family camping trip, where you get to the campground early, stake out your ideal site, pitch your tent and enjoy the woodsy experience. My daughter was to join me after I set up.

But, that vision faded after attendants at the gate at the new park told me there were no drive-in camp sites. What!

Maybe in phase two, they said. All the park had to offer a traditional tent camper was a walk-in site or an RV space on asphalt. I shrugged off the workout of lugging all my gear 25 yards or more to a walk-in site. And I opted not to expose my old Cabela’s dome tent to pavement in RV land where the lowly tent camper’s primitive nature clashes with those in homes on wheels.

So, I explored the lovely park into early afternoon, wishing I had a place meant for me to stay overnight. The beach, short hiking trails, cottages, public pavilions, and swinging benches invite visitors to linger. I ran into Kim Hatcher, Public Information Coordinator for Georgia State Parks, who seemed surprised there were no “car camping” sites. “I’m a car camper, too,” she said,

and sought out Park Manager Will Wagner to find out if any traditional tent sites were forthcoming.

“It’s mostly RV. They paved the campsites … there’s no definite plan” for car camping, he said. Shocked, I thought of Don Carter’s words about his namesake park being for the working folks, average people like me whose outdoor experiences center on the pure (and inexpensive) joys of nature, with some packed goods. I pondered what he would say about this.I also thought about past family camping trips to Georgia State Parks at Vogel and Unicoi and National Park campgrounds in the Smokies, like Cades Cove and Elkmont.

Families drove up with tents and set up a neighborhood of campsites where kids rode bikes and folks hiked to the bath house to shower and wash dishes while the aroma of wood smoke toasting marshmallows for s’mores drifted into the evening air.

I don’t think those days are gone. I overheard at least two other visitors to Don Carter ask about car camping.

Maybe if we keep asking, they’ll carry on our tradition.

I left the park a little disappointed, but knowing I made history, in a way. I was the first visitor to get a paid parking pass at the new state park.

I plan to get it autographed by Don Carter himself and the governor at the opening ceremony later this summer. I’ll tell them how beautiful the park is and then ask them about something the first visitor hoped for, but didn’t find.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

ting up on asphalt, there’s plenty of room in the RV section, where campground hosts Lynne and Steve Schaf welcome visitors. The retired Florida couple knows the RV life, having sold their home to see the country from a 40-foot Lazy Days travel trailer full time. They drove up to Don Carter State Park about a week before the park opened and were enjoying the quietness on a hill above the lake before the pace picked up. With opening day on a Monday, only three RV campers had checked in by early afternoon. The Schafs expected they’d have more company come the weekend.

Park goers focused on native flora during the first interpretive program along the walk-in camp trail on opening day. Interpretive ranger Jessica James-Weims pointed out muscadine, ground cedar, Virginia creeper, bracken ferns and other plants during a walk with about two dozen hikers.

Cheryl Smith and daughter, Leah, who live eight minutes away, came for the trails. “We’re exited about hiking,” said Cheryl, who added that her husband, Mike, might like to bike the short multiuse trail, and son, Aaron, would probably enjoy a backpacking stay at a walk-in site.

The first visitors to the beach frolicked in the sand and water as the sun showed its face for the first time in what seemed like weeks. The pavilion above the sand filled with lunchtime picnickers. Murrayville resident Jennifer Walker was among those who had awaited the park’s opening, which had been delayed more than a month due to rain that slowed construction. She brought her four children for a picnic and beach fun. “It’s great! We’ll be here a lot,” she said.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for later this summer when arrangements can be made for Don Carter and Gov. Nathan Deal to attend. The park is named for the Gainesville real estate executive who was the longest serving member of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources board. Carter, who proposed building the state park on lakeside property off North Browning Bridge Road, helped the state acquire more than 290,000 acres during his 29-year tenure.

He envisioned the $14 million park, which was announced as his namesake at a surprise retirement party, as a respite for “blue collar people,” anglers, outdoors folks, and families on the quieter end of the lake.

Boats rally for the cause at Pirates of Lanier Poker Run

Keene he big guns showed up in force for the 5th Annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run in the middle of July, making waves and helping Lanier Partners set a new record for raising funds for the children. Between 75 and 80 high-speed boats made up a bulk of the 275-boat fleet in the annual event that this year is predicted to top $280,000 in funds.

“People kept coming up to all of the board members and telling us how much they enjoyed this year’s event,” said Rea Williams with the Lanier Partners of North Georgia board. “They complimented us on the parties, the running of the event and even our safety approach, saying that this was far and away the best Poker Run they’ve ever participated in.”

Williams said that many of the participants follow the Poker Run circuit around the country, trailering large cigarette boats from event to event. These high-perfor-

mance boats were complemented by runabouts, cruisers and pontoon boats that were decked out in pirate trim for the three-day event.

In all, more than 275 boats and skippers, complete with crew, made this year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run the most successful ever. In addition to the boats registered, the organization sold more than 800 poker hands for chances to win cash.

Children’s charities that will benefit from the 2013 Poker Run are Boys & Girls Clubs of Hall County, Camp Sunshine and Naval Special Warfare Kids.

Opening night’s Meet and Greet party at Gianni’s at Lake

Lanier Islands drew several hundred attendees, who were ready to begin a party weekend.

Friday night’s Captains party – held at Grand Hall at the resort – was attended by more than 1,500 people. From the silent and live auctions to entertainment by the Kristin Tinsley Band, the party topped last year’s attendance. The barbeque dinner of smoked chicken, pulled pork and all the trimmings, was prepared by Lake Lanier’s J and Cal Smith, who also catered the event in 2012.

“Those guys really outdid themselves this year,” Williams said.

“They just know how to make a delicious meal.”

Saturday’s Poker Run went off like clockwork. Lanier Partners instigated a few changes this year, including staggered starts and a new way of handing out the cards at each checkpoint. When the event was over, skippers met back at Sunset Cove with their sealed envelopes containing the playing cards. Envelopes were

opened by an official dealer who compared each hand and declared winners.

Jarrett Gorlin of Atlanta took the first-place prize of $5,000 for the best hand. Ken Armstrong of Houston, Texas, won $2,500 for second place and Mitch Blalock of Dunwoody grabbed third, a prize of $1,000.

“All three winners gave back

their prize money,” Williams said. “It was incredible.”

Additionally, at the Friday night Captains’ Party, even before the race, Armstrong donated $50,000.

“You know, he told me that once he heard Sally Hale from Camp Sunshine talk about the kids, he just felt like writing a check then and there.

Participants praise ‘smooth’ event

By Jane Harrison With a sound like thunder, high performance boats approached Gainesville Marina as helicopters spun overhead. Led by a stunning 48-foot red and black catamaran, the famous Windship, owned by Georgia native John Woodruff, vessels slowed down for the draw. Woodruff, the great grandson of Coca Cola launcher Ernest Woodruff, yelled something about his 100-plus mile per hour run from Lake Lanier Islands as his bikini clad first mate plucked envelopes containing their first cards of the day.

Followed by an equally mesmerizing vessel, the ghostly silver Phantom, a parade of power on the water proceeded, most flaunting attractive barely clad women posing as bow ornaments lined up for review. Although it’s part bikini con-

“It’s all about raising money for the kids,” said Rob Davidson, whose family and co-workers composed most of the volunteer crew at Gainesville Marina.

“We all love the lake and doing good things like this,” he said in the quiet before the roar of motors beat each set of ear drums on dock.

As boat after boat from all over the country pulled up, Daniel Disney extended card envelopes on a pole over each gleaming hull. Bruce Davidson helped ascertain how many cards boaters had paid to draw. Working like clockwork, the volunteers kept the flow steady and sent hundreds of boats to their next desti-

Docksiders Donna Owen, from Douglasville, and Alan Grau, from College Park, were glad they made the trip to Lanier.

“We thought we’d check it out,” Owen said. “He’s a guy that wants to see all these fast boats and dream.”

“There are some NICE boats,” said Grau, adding only in his dreams could he jump from his land love, his Harley, to a water goddess.

New lake resident Michael Leahy surveyed the flotilla and fantasized about how it might look at top speed. “I’d like to see them going full throttle,” he said.

He plans to scope out a spectator site in the fast lane next year.

At Port Royale, shortly after the rush subsided, an exhausted Rea Williams took a breather as his crew doled out cards to the slower pirates on Lanier. The new race format allowed boats expected to hit 100 or more miles per hour to start first, followed in five minute intervals by vessels going 10 miles per hour slower than the flight before them.

“It went so smooth this year.

They pulled in, slowed down at the dock and rolled back out. It was beautiful!” Williams said.

Pirates filled the tables at Pelican Pete’s at Port Royale where many poker run participants took a late lunch break.

Rocky Whitaker brought a dozen friends and family members from all over metro Atlanta to their first poker run in his 28-foot Chaparral. “It’s pretty neat … rough and loud out there,” he said.

Jimmy and Leslie Hehir, from Cumming, celebrated their first voyage with a jocular crew wearing pirates’ hats and bandannas.

“It’s rough like the ocean” Leslie said, “but it’s fun, just unbelievable. It’s the most fun we’ve had on the water.”

August safety tip: Check your safety equipment, know how to use it It’s not a good idea to wait until you have an emergency to find out if your safety equipment is sufficient. It’s also not wise to assume that just because you’ve browsed safety procedures, you know how to perform them.

Officials from two area sailing clubs said that regular checks on self-inflated personal flotation devices and fire extinguishers help insure safety equipment is up to task for emergencies.

Don’t wait for an emergency to make sure your equipment will function properly, said David Wright, Commodore, of the Flowery Branch Barefoot Sailing Club. “If you haven’t tried out your equipment, it’s too late to do it when there is an emergency,” added Patti Price, Atlanta Sail & Power Squadron Education Officer.

Check fire extinguishers to make sure they have not gone beyond their expiration dates. Be certain that inflatable PFDs will fill with air. "We tend to get complacent,

then when we have an emergency, we really aren’t as prepared as we think we are,” Wright said.

Testing your recovery procedures, such as how to respond when a boat occupant falls overboard, can mean the difference between life and death. Methods of getting a person back in a boat vary with different types of vessels. A sailboat winch is helpful in pulling a sailor out of the water, if the operator knows its capabilities. Other boats with high hulls may present challenges that potential rescuers should work through before they have to figure something out at the last minute. Sometimes it may be necessary to observe how close a vessel is to shore and then carefully pull a capable fallen boater to where they can get a foothold.

Inspecting safety equipment and knowing how to perform safety procedures may help avert panic and casualty in emergency situations.

North Georgia indian heritage honored at Islands Sidney Lanier’s words from his famous poem, “Song of the Chattahoochee,” only reveals a small part of the fascinating history of the Chattahoochee River that is the heart and soul of Lake Lanier. Long before the European settlers came to this area, a proud nation of native Indians roamed the foot hills and mountains of this picturesque land, and that history is now being recognized at Lake Lanier Islands Resort in the form of exquisite bronze statues by sculptor Art Oldham.

The Cherokee Nation in Northeast Georgia was of Iroquoian lineage from the Great Lakes Region and the largest of the tribes in the Southeast. They called themselves “Ani’-Yun’ wiya” or “Principal People” and controlled more than 40,000 square miles in the southern Appalachians by 1650 with a population estimated at 22,500.

Their nation was a confederacy of towns, each subordinate to supreme chiefs. When encountered by Europeans, they were an agricultural people who lived in log homes, not teepees, and observed sacred religious practices.

In most cases, the Cherokees were far better educated and civilized than most of the settlers.

Though the Cherokees, as well as other Indian tribes, sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, they quickly adapted to the white man’s culture, and even volunteered to fight with Andrew Jackson against the British in the War of 1812. Nevertheless,

This system, in which each character represents a syllable, produced rapid literacy. It made possible their written constitution, the spread of Christianity and the printing of the only Indian newspaper The Cherokee Phoenix in 1828. The newspaper is again being published, but acted as the official voice of the Cherokee government for its first seven years before being silenced during the roundup to march the Cherokee Nation on the “Trail of Tears” to reservations in Oklahoma.

This happened because in 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the “Indian Removal Act.” Although many Americans were against the act, most notably Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett, it passed anyway. President Jackson quickly signed the bill into law.

this law in the Supreme Court and by establishing an independent Cherokee Nation. At first the court seemed to rule against the Indians. In Cherokee Nation v.

Georgia, the court refused to hear a case extending Georgia’s laws on the Cherokee because they did not represent a sovereign nation.

In 1832, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee on the same issue in Worcester v.

Georgia. In this case Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Cherokee Nation was sovereign, making the removal laws invalid.

The Cherokee would have to agree to removal in a treaty. The treaty then would have to be ratified by the Senate.

Despite the warnings of Chief John Ross and the support of most of the Cherokee Nation, several tribal leaders, who only had a following of around 700 of the 17,000 Cherokee in North Georgia, signed a treaty for the whole tribe. This action gave Jackson the legal document he needed to remove the Indians. Among the few who spoke out against the ratification were Daniel Webster and Henry Clay, but it passed by a single vote. So, in 1838 the United States began the removal to Oklahoma. When he was ordered to remove the Cherokee, General John Wool resigned his command in protest, delaying the action. His replacement, General Winfield Scott, arrived at the Cherokee Capital on May 17, 1838 with 7,000 men and began

moving the tribe.

In one of the saddest episodes in history, men, women and children were taken from their land, herded together with minimal facilities and food, and then forced to march a thousand miles in horrible conditions. About 4,000 Cherokee died as a result of the “The Trail of Tears.”

Ironically, a country formed 50 years earlier on the premise “that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ... ” brutally closed the curtain on a culture that had done no wrong.

Therefore, with great pride and

humility, I believe that the Cherokee Nation and my Cherokee ancestors would be eternally grateful for this striking recognition in superb art from the vision of Mr. Virgil Williams and the hands of Art Oldham!

Note: This is a reprint of an article I wrote for Lake Lanier Islands several years ago, but with all the division in our country at the present time, I felt it to be a good time for a reminder of our local history.

High water brings hazards for swimmers, boaters Thunderstorms continue to roll across Georgia this summer, bringing heavy amounts of rain.

Lake levels continue to stay above 1071 msl, while the water shed area for Lake Sidney Lanier fills the lake with debris. Along with the rains come winds and wave action that continue to erode shorelines, contributing to more debris in the waterway.

After each rain you only need to look over the bow of your boat to see floating obstacles littering the lake. These visible tree branches and other debris are only a portion of what is really hidden under the surface.

Each year tragedy strikes our community as we read about individuals diving from structures, docks, or boats and are injured due to some unseen object that apparently wasn’t there just days before. They suffer injuries, paralysis or death, but most of these accidents could have been avoided by following some simple precautions.

son can do to be safe is to always wear a life jacket when in or near the water.

• Always swim with a buddy nearby.

• Swim only in designated swim areas.

• Inspect the area where you are going to swim, including below the surface for unseen obstacles and objects.

• Never dive head-first into the water, even if you think the water is deep and clear of debris.

We have especially seen inci-

dents in our parks. For example, West Bank Park’s railing and retaining walls near other beaches tend to entice young folks into jumping or diving into the water.

Parents should be very aware of where their children are and the hazards that accompany this type of play. Be sure to talk with your youngsters about safety precautions.

As for boaters, a floating log can ruin a beautiful day at the lake and could potentially cause thousands of dollars in damage to your vessel, in addition to possible injury to passengers. Always have a lookout on your boat to spot these obstacles and drive at a responsible speed to allow yourself plenty of time to avoid obstacles. Just because a boat can go fast doesn’t mean the boat driver should push reasonable speeds Another danger from these thunderstorms is lightning strikes.

Collision avoidance rule 2 - responsibility A contributing factor in some marine collisions or near misses is the misguided belief that one of the boat operators is in the right and therefore not at fault. This second segment in a multi-part series of rules governing collision avoidance deals with who is obliged to understand and apply these maneuvering requirements.

The law that spells out the correct answer in detail is Rule 2, Responsibility. Only two, short and to the point paragraphs, comprise this directive with its application affecting a wide-ranging aspect of boat operations: (a) Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner, master, or crew thereof, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these Rules or of the neglect of any precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special circumstances of the case. (b) In construing and complying with these Rules due regard shall be had to all dangers of navigation and collision and to any special circumstances, including the limitations of the vessels involved, which may make a departure from these Rules necessary to avoid immediate danger.

This segment also implies in some interpretative fashion that there is a percentage of liability for each operator that is involved in the incident.

Let’s relate these maritime regulations to something more familiar – the duty and obligations you have when driving a motor vehicle. It is expected, and greatly appreciated by all, that drivers understand and apply all the rules of the road, at all times, in any situation, to avoid collision with another vehicle.

Marine collision avoidance maneuvering rules are to some extent similar with one very important and profound difference … the surface you travel on is dynamically contrast to a roadway.

Over the years I have often heard new boaters describe operating a watercraft as likened to driving a

motor vehicle on a large asphalt surface covered in ice. The responsibility to interpret and follow these rules, taking into account all factors and conditions you may experience, is critical to everyone’s safety. No painted lines, graphics, and road signs to help guide your way but a very resourceful system of procedures, markers, and regulations to help pilot the vessel safely to your destination. Whenever you set out on the water, no matter what type of vessel, or the location, you have the responsibility to safely operate your boat with competence and caution, giving due regard for all dangers to proper navigation, persons, and other vessels nearby.

Just reading a copy of the rules, or taking a brief training course does not satisfy this large and sometimes challenging task.

Rule 2 is just the beginning of a long journey of learning and once these instructions are mastered through experience and ultimately become second nature – you will begin to reap the additional benefits of a collision free, safer, and more enjoyable voyage.

Next month’s article will present ways how to recognize a collision situation, the first step to successful avoidance.

Clearing the calendar for yoga; Karma interrupts So I am in my study one morning, halfheartedly engaged in my yoga routine. Meaning that if I were to actually engage in yoga like activity, that I would be pursuing a yoga derivative of just sitting and thinking about what I would do if I were to yoga at all.

For the record, I do this religiously. And I have to say that it is very draining. It basically amounts to trying to calculate the chances that yoga would change my life in some meaningful monetary way. In other words, is my yoga-ness going to pay off?

And then, out of the blue, I got an email. As you may have surmised, I’m a pretty busy person, and so I rarely have time to flip through a lot of trivial, unsolicited emails. But this one was different in a deeply transcendental kind of different-ness. As a lawyer, the email spoke to me.

“Blaine told us that he had read about the Poker Run and thought it sounded really exiting, so he packed up his daugh-

ter and flew to Atlanta for the weekend,” Williams said. “He didn’t have a boat, but he was able to hitch a ride with a local boat and had a wonderful time. He even wrote us a check for $1,000.”

Williams said that the board of directors of Lanier Partners all worked hard to make the event a success, calling them very dedicated to helping the children.

“It’s amazing to think that just five years ago, we barely raised $5,000 in our inaugural event,” Williams said. “We just couldn’t be happier and prouder of this year’s turnout. We’re all taking a week off to recuperate, then we’re getting started to make next year’s Poker Run even bigger and better.”
