By Pamela A. Keene As COVID-19 affects people in North Georgia, events are being canceled or postponed, and many facilities are temporarily closing. The Lake Lanier Association’s Board of Directors has postponed its previously scheduled Member Celebration, originally set for mid-April. “With the uncertainty regarding how COVID-19 will affect our Lake Lanier community we have sadly decided to cancel the Annual Member Celebration,” said Jennifer Flowers, executive director of the lake advocacy group. “ We are currently working on creating plans for member appreciation and engagement version 2.0.” She said that the group is considering smaller summertime events to fun tours and presentations. “Within creating these plans we are keeping our business sponsors in mind,” she said. “Many Lake Lanier businesses that we all know and love are hurting during these times and we are keeping that at the forefront of our minds as we create new plans. Though it is disappointing to cancel, we are optimistic that

version 2.0 will provide great opportunities for our members.” The group will provide updated information on its website as plans develop at lakelanier.org. Georgia State Parks As of press time, Georgia’s state parks remain open. Hiking trails, picnic areas, camping sites and cabins all are open. Officials said that the parks are excellent alternatives to spend time enjoying nature in relative solitude. “We want to do all we can to help health and emergency officials prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Director Jeff Cown. “The safety of all citizens is of utmost importance to the Georgia State Parks team. With this being a fluid situation, we are monitoring it closely and making whatever decisions necessary to ensure the health and well-being of the public, our guests and employees.” For the latest updates related to Coronavirus, visit GaStateParks.org/Alerts. Corps of Engineers Parks The Corps of Engineers South Atlantic Division Office in Atlanta has issued a statement that

all visitors centers and resource management offices are closed until further notice. The opening of campgrounds, parks and other areas that have not yet opened for the 2020 season have been delayed indefinitely. The statement said that full refunds for canceled reservations will be given whenever possible. The Corps has also stopped taking future reservations. All interpretive programs, site

visits and Corps-sponsored events including shoreline clean-ups, kids program and public meetings have been canceled through the middle of May. Additionally faceto-face appointments with stakeholders have been delayed unless social distancing is possible. For more information about Lake Lanier’s Corps parks and facilities, call the Buford Dam Project Management Office at 770-945-9531.

Water lawsuit: Florida replies expected this month By Jane Harrison Florida has until April 13 to defend its lawsuit against Georgia over water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system. The U.S. Supreme Court in February granted Florida’s request for a 30-day extension to respond to a Special Master’s denial of their quest to restrict Georgia’s water use on the river network that stretches from North Georgia to the Florida Panhandle. Although Lake Lanier is the ACF’s largest reservoir and the major water supplier to metro-Atlanta, Florida focused its case largely on Georgia agriculture. Georgia farmers use more water to irrigate crops than municipalities use for households, industry and commerce. Special Master Paul J. Kelly, Jr., dealt Florida a legal blow with his December 2019 recommendations that the court deny Florida’s claims in its 2013 lawsuit. Kelly is the second special master to rule in Georgia’s favor. In June 2018, the court gave Florida another chance, ruling 5-4 to remand Special Master Ralph I. Lancaster’s report. It then assigned the case to Kelly, who stated after hearing the case he believed Georgia’s water use is reasonable and downstream woes in Florida were caused by drought and mismanagement rather than Georgia’s consumption. The court received Kelly’s recommendations in January and initially asked for Florida’s responses by March 13. Florida

attorneys requested a 30-day extension, citing “extraordinary complexity of the factual and legal issues raised by the Special Master’s Report, and due to the fact that the completion of plaintiffs exceptions and supporting brief by the current deadline would be difficult in light of the heavy press of counsel’s other pending matters and professional duties.” Theoretically, Georgia’s replies and supporting briefs would be due June 12, with another round of Florida sur-replies and supporting briefs due July 13. A date for a supreme court hearing, if justices decide to grant one, has not been set. The responses due in the next few months are in writing and are not expected to be impacted by court delays due to coronavirus concerns. However, if justices choose to hear the case again, a backlog due to postponement of argument sessions in March could shift a potential argument date. The extension prolongs the legal action that has already cost both states upwards of $40 million. In the meantime, the Apalachicola Bay area, which Florida’s lawsuit seeks to help, has been granted nearly $50 million to study and prop up its oyster fisheries. Florida initiated the legal matter after a 2012 drought during which Apalachicola’s oyster industry dried up. Sunshine State attorneys placed the blame upstream in Georgia, claiming Georgia hoarded water on the rivers causing economic and ecological harm downstream.

Fishing news

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area experts Lake level: Approximately 1.6 feet above full pool Clarity: Main lake, creeks, very stained Temperature: 50s Bass fishing The majority of our fish recently came from 10 feet or less. You will find the fish are very shallow in the stained water and farther along in the pre spawn process and still a bit deeper and fewer shallow in the clearer water on most days. That too is beginning to change as fish are beginning to move up all around the lake. Overall, look on flatter rock and clay points and look shallow. Remain flexible as you search for viable daily patterns given the conditions and the fish changing so rapidly. Crankbaits, jerk baits, under spins, jigs, swimbaits and shaky heads will all still be viable options for rock fish and the ditch/pocket bites that are available. In general, I would choose the shallows early, and move deeper as the day progresses if the shallow bite fails. Also, be very care-

ful navigating the lake there is still a lot of floating debris. This report is by Jimbo Mathley, Jimbo on Lanier, www.jimboonlanier.com or call 770 542-7764. Striper fishing Striper fishing is good. Flat lines and planer boards have been catching most of the stripers. Fish flat line 100 to 120 feet behind boat and 30 to 40 feet behind boards using blue backs hooked in the mouth up thru the top in front of the eyes. Look over 30- to 60-foot bottoms around points and right off the channel. Watch for bird activity even if you don’t mark fish try that area and use you pool cue to get their attention. Always have a down line because they are unpredictable. This report is by Buck Cannon, Buck Tails Guide Service, 404 510-1778. Gainesville Marina ups its game with facility improvements By Pamela A. Keene From expanding its floating ship’s store, new pump-out station and sales office to opening a new boat showroom and administrative offices, Gainesville Marina is more focused than ever on customer service. “We’re ready for the 2020 boating season with all the improvements we’ve made since last year,” said Philip Burton, managing partner of Gainesville Marina. “Our customers will now be able to visit our expanded ship’s store for boating accessories, snack items, sunscreen and all those things you tend to forget when you head to the lake.” The marina has also ex-

panded its parts and service department with a four-bay facility. It also has room for a dozen boats under cover in the service area. Gainesville Marina’s rental fleet includes several sizes of pontoon boats, ranging from 22foot vessels with 90 horsepower outboards to 24-foot tritoon boats with 150 horsepower outboards.

They are available for rent seven days a week in half-day or full-day increments. New 2020 models being added to fleet this spring. The marina sells new Berkshire and South Bay pontoon boats, as well as Stingray runabouts and bow-riders. It also carries a wide range of preowned boats. It offers both inthe-water boat slips and dry storage. Gainesville Marina is also home to Skogie’s Restaurant. “Customer feedback has been the driving force behind all of these improvements,” Burton said. “And if we don’t have something you need, we want to hear from you.”

In full bloom: Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge By Pamela A. Keene With one of the largest collections of rhododendrons in the Southeast, Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge is a nature-lover’s dream. In bloom from early April until mid-May, the garden’s 1,500 rhododendrons and native azaleas color the meandering trails with swaths of blossoms. “This garden is such a treasure and we’re fortunate to be its stewards and caretakers,” said Grace Howard, executive director of the 33-acre woodlands that border Lake Chatuge. “Each year we celebrate ‘A Blooming Affair’ because of the amazing flora that’s showcased here.” This year’s dates for “A Blooming Affair” are April 11 through May 16. The garden was planted in 1981 with nearly 1,100 plants on land leased in perpetuity by the Tennessee Valley Authority to Towns County to create a park. The rhododendrons and azaleas were donated by Hazel and Fred Hamilton, avid collectors and hybridizers, and were moved from their home to the gardens as a living botanical legacy. Four years ago, a group of Towns County citizens formed a

nonprofit, Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge Inc., to manage and operate the gardens. Many infrastructure projects have been completed since then, including the new Rosebay Bridge, Paris Pavilion restrooms, a shoreline trail and Celebration Plaza. A pollinator garden has been planted and an herb bed is planned. Volunteers also recently completed clean-up from winter storms that damaged a half-dozen white pines and more than a dozen oak trees. In 2018, Hamilton Gardens volunteers planted 600 daffodils to honor and remember 1.5 million children who were murdered during the Holocaust. They bloom each spring as one of the first harbingers of the season. The gardens have 1.5 miles of mulched woodland trails that wind through the property. Native plants, trees and wildflowers populate the forest floor. Hamilton Gardens hosts a spring plant sale that takes place on weekends from April 11 until they run out of plants. It also hosts monthly moonlight concerts from May through October. An education series on the first and third Friday of June, July and Au-

gust called “Let’s Get Growing” brings novice and seasoned gardeners to the facility. “This is such a beautiful and peaceful place,” she said. “And when it blooms, it’s so glorious that nothing else in the world matters.” For more info about Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, concerts, events and classes, visit hamiltongardens.org.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK LLOP has new special events manager By Jane Harrison Robyn Lynch, Gainesville Convention and Visitors Bureau director, will continue leadership at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, Lynch which will also have a new hire to handle off-thewater activities. Eric Larsen, former owner of a running event company in Las Vegas, was recently named Special Events Manager of the venue that has in recent years expanded its culture beyond the water sports that created it. James Watson, who has served as interim manager since Lynch took the city position in August 2019, will continue as Facilities and Water Sports Manager. The former Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club paddler came on board about five years ago assisting Morgan House, the first LLOP

manager. The city of Gainesville, which took over at the park last July, hired Lynch as tourism director and initially sought a new director to take her place. For a brief time, the park operated under the city’s Parks & Recreation Department but recently was moved into the city’s tourism division. Lynch said that as tourism director, she is also director at LLOP. Larsen, 44, moved to Gainesville about a year ago when his wife, Dawn Marie Larsen, a Brenau University graduate, returned to work at the college. In his former ownership of a running event company, he coordinated active pursuits and fundraising efforts for non-profit entities. “The bulk of my professional work was in outdoor recreation, getting people outdoors,” he said. He took the job shortly before coronavirus concerns shut down a number of special events at

LLOP. Though disappointed with the loss of spring happenings, he is looking forward to a round of make-up activities. “We’re doing our best to keep going,” he said, even if it means pushing dates back. He mentioned the city hopes to reschedule its Spring Chicken Festival in June and Food Truck Fridays may resume their monthly rollout in May. He said concerts near the end of summer are expected to bring crowds back in. He described LLOP with its broad lakeside plaza as a “great asset” to get people outside. He also indicated his LLOP work is not confined to a desk. “James (Watson) and I have a hand in everything that goes on here.” In March, he and Watson joined local rowers laboring to remove debris left by receding water near the Olympic tower. That chore was expected to go on for days.

LLOP cancellations ripple across community By Jane Harrison Cancellation of regattas, Olympic trails, and other spring events at Lake Lanier Olympic Park due to concerns about coronavirus strike far-reaching blows, causing pain and adjustments not just for athletes and spectators, but also to the organizations that support them and the hospitality industry that depends on their visits. Jeff Kish, director of the John Hunter Regatta, was the first to call off a major LLOP event after hearing concerns of parents, volunteers and referees. Originally set for March 21-22, the 34th annual regatta put on by Roswell’s St. Andrews Rowing Club was expected to bring more than 1,500 college and high school rowers, plus hundreds of volunteers, spectators and officials. Kish made the difficult call on March 6 or 7 after a full day of talking on the phone with those involved. “There was too much concern,” he said, not just about the virus, but also about the high water level on Lake Lanier that threatened anchoring the race course. As disappointing as it was, Kish said “I’m thankful I did it when I did, it’s probably a blessing I canceled soon enough so we didn’t incur a lot of expense.”

The club may have averted financial loss, but a wave of woe hit an entire chain of businesses impacted by no regatta, from hotels and restaurants to t-shirt vendors and trophy shops to the Olympic venue itself. “The cancellation of the John Hunter Regatta and the US and Canada Olympic Trials is a blow to not only the revenue of LLOP but also to LCKC (Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club), LLRC (Lake Lanier Rowing Club), St. Andrews Rowing Club and our local hotels and restaurants,” said Robyn Lynch, Gainesville Convention and Visitors Bureau Director, who also oversees LLOP. “The spring events at LLOP contribute to over 2,000 overnight stays in our local hotels/motels,” she said. Rent paid by organizations that use the venue help cover operational expenses at the former Olympic site. “We are fortunate that several of the spring events were just postponed and not canceled,” Lynch said. For instance, the CVB hopes to hold its Spring Chicken Festival this summer, likely in June. This month’s Food Truck Friday is off, but might roll back in May. However, other events with national or international connections are gone for 2020 or postponed indefinitely.

By mid-March, cancellations at LLOP came one after another. Canoe Kayak Canada announced it “made the difficult but necessary decision” to cancel its sprint Olympic and Paralympic Trials April 16-19. Its website gave athletes a link for a “Mental Health Resource Document.” The American Canoe Association followed in their wake, calling off their sprint canoe/kayak Olympic Trials originally set for the same dates. Before that, the American Collegiate Rowing Association announced it would decide by April 13 about whether to go ahead with its national championship set for May 22-24. Thousands of competitors usually fill the Olympic channel and grandstands in pursuit of collegiate club rowing’s top crowns. But, with some colleges across the nation essentially grounding their boats for the season, rowers might not be able to practice. ACRA officials remained positive, as a significant number of college crews hoped to pick up oars again in April. In mid-March, ACRA officials stated that “in the spirit of optimism” they still planned a championship regatta for programs able to attend. However, two long time volunteers with the local rowing club

had their doubts. On a gray midMarch afternoon, Dave Markey and Gary Wiegand parked the club’s launch boats – each with faded logos from the 1996 Olympics – on the concrete at the end of the Olympic plaza. “After NCAA canceled, most schools extended their spring break. (Athletes) are working from home,” Markey said. That meant hundreds of rowers that traditionally flood LLOP and local hotels and restaurants during pre-season training weren’t coming. The week before, about 400 rowers from eight schools hit the water behind the boathouse. By March 16, Markey and Wigand were pulling the club’s motor boat fleet off the water, no longer needed by coaches monitoring young crews on Lanier. Many rowers and paddlers aiming to set personal records or

achieve lofty goals worked to keep in shape in hopes they’ll get their time in the sunshine. For others, cancellations mark the end of years of sweat and hard work without closure. As of late March, the summer Olympics in Tokyo were still on, although some sports’ qualifying events were changing. LCKC and ACA head coach Zsolt Szadovszki, who trains Olympic hopefuls, saw a potential benefit of trying times. “It is frustrating, but right now it really comes down to basically an extra focus on training that could possibly be even more beneficial in their preparation,” he said. “We are staying positive in the spirit of the Olympic Games are still on and as of now all the officials saying that is the case.” Szadovszki said “quite a few LCKC athletes” have a strong See Cancellations, page 22

April 2020

Seasons bring change on the lake and beyond One of the best things about North Georgia is the change of seasons. It’s a euphoric sensation when winter passes and spring finally arrives. Lake Lanier, populated for months only by bass fishermen and hardcore sailors, suddenly comes alive with every jet ski, pontoon boat, cabin cruiser and yes, even the occasional houseboat afloat. Up in the mountains when the weather gets warm enough to put the top down, the roads teem with sports cars, RVs, motorcycles and bicycles. I’m amazed at the number of bicyclists I see pedaling up the inclines. All I can think of is that what goes up must come down. It must be a white-knuckle experience to be doing 35 miles per hour downhill around some of those curves, with nothing between you and the road but two skinny tires and a thin layer of nylon shorts and shirt. They’re a lot braver than I am. When my motorcycle riding buddies come in from out of town, we take them up the “Tail of the Dragon” on Hwy. 129 just south of the NC/TN border. It has 318 turns in 11 miles and is a motorcyclist’s dream … or nightmare, depending on your perspective. The speed

Vinnie Mendes On the Water

limit is 15 to 20 mph most of the way and us old guys ride our BMWs or Harleys along at a sedate 25 mph thinking we’re badass, and all of a sudden, WHAW-WHAW-WHAWWHAW, four rice burning crotch rockets (light, high powered Japanese motorcycles) streak past us at 60 plus mph. They may be out to prove something, but we call them “Organ Donors.” Our British Car Club gathers for occasional rallies in the mountains. I especially like the old antiques because remembering them when they were new, I also understand how they work, as opposed to the new cars where I can’t do much more than check the oil. You’ll see a line of 20 to 30 vintage cars traveling the same route looking for clues on where to turn next. It’s a lot of fun solving the puzzles such as “What did St John

say to the Romans?” and a few miles later you’ll pass a church with the sign out front telling you what he said. There’s always a good story or two coming out of outings like this. One memorable time we had a competitor, Howie, driving an MGB. His copilot/navigator, Cody, had a new Alfa-Romeo. He was very proud of it and let everybody know. I guess he didn’t realize that anyone can plop down a credit card and buy an Alfi, but it takes talent to keep a 65-year-old car on the road. At any rate we were competing in a rally where everyone had a list of clues which they had to follow to arrive at a secret destination. The cars took off at two-minute intervals so it wouldn’t just be “follow the leader.” About halfway through we came upon skid marks in the middle of the road and about 100 yards later, a couple of MGs pulled off to the side. There in the middle of someone’s lawn was Howie’s MGB. Following the skid marks, we traced his path, back over someone’s patio where he and taken off one of the supports for their upper deck! Luckily no one was hurt but the driver’s door was damaged,

and the car kept stalling out when he tried to start it. Within a few minutes several more MGs had joined the party and it was determined that he had crimped the exhaust pipe. As there was no cell service in the area, we were standing around discussing options to get the car towed back home, when Cody asked, “anyone got a cigarette?” Someone produced a pack of Winstons and a Bic and Cody put one in his mouth backwards and proceeded to light the filter! I asked him if he knew something I didn’t know or was he doing it backwards. He said” No Man, leave me alone, I really need this.” So, we all stood around as he smoked his way thru the filter as if that was the way to do it. About this time, a couple of locals showed up in a pickup truck and we explained the situation. They said, “No problem,” went back to the truck and produced a Sawzall (a high-powered saber saw on steroids). Within a few minutes they had cut off about six feet of the exhaust pipe and muffler and the car started and ran fine! Never underestimate a couple of rednecks with a Sawzall! After Howie left a note with explaining what had hap-

pened and his contact info we all took off noisily down the road with Cody holding the muffler on his lap with the tailpipe sticking straight up in the air muttering “If it was an Alfi it never would have happened.” The really good thing about spring is that it prepares you for the coming of summer when the lake literally turns into a carnival. There are sailboat races every weekend and some evenings during the week, fishing tournaments, poker runs such as the “Pirates of Lanier,” not to mention all the boats that are just normal people out to have a good time on the water. Then we have the dozens of state parks around the lake where for a modest fee families can come and enjoy the out of doors. After dark there are fireworks displays both commercial and private, celebrating holidays, birthdays or graduations. You never know what will come next and there’s always another story to tell! Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

River Rats: St. Johns River in Florida shares her secrets Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene rowing up on the St. Johns River in Florida, I come by my love and fascination with water honestly. I could swim before I could walk, my parents trick waterskied on the river in front of our house every weekend, and I raced for nearly a decade as an adult in the Mug Race, a 38-mile sailing adventure from my hometown of Palatka to Jacksonville. However, the river south of the Palatka Memorial Bridge was my great unknown. Sure, I knew about the tiny towns that dot US Highway 17 – Satsuma, Welaka, Pomona Park, Seville, Pierson and DeLeon Springs. They were familiar names from my drives home while attending Stetson University in the early 1970s. For years, I’d talked about a trip on this section of the St. Johns by boat. Finally in midFebruary, my husband Rick and I, along with another couple who live on Lake Lanier, towed our 24-foot pontoon boat to Florida. Launching the boat on Monday afternoon we overnighted at Crystal Cove Marina just north of Palatka. Dinner at Gator Landing in East Palatka was every bit as good as I remembered; the fried oysters got rave reviews from each of us. Heavy fog Tuesday morning socked us in until almost 10 a.m., but by the time we passed under the Palatka Memorial Bridge, most of it had burned off. As we rounded Devil’s Elbow, one of the river’s tightest turns, we passed by Gator Landing and headed upstream, going south.

G

That sounds funny – heading upriver going south – but that’s part of the intrigue of the St. Johns. It’s one of few rivers in the world that flows north, starting in lower southeast central Florida in Indian River County and connecting with the Atlantic Ocean at Mayport, north of Jacksonville. The river’s waters are navigable from Lake Monroe at Sanford up to Mayport. Its broadest sections are all north of Palatka, at some places measuring more than two miles wide. Commercial traffic, particularly near Jacksonville, includes barges, many transporting the more than a half-million vehicles annually that connect with ships leaving Mayport to make deliveries around the world. Dozens of fishing boats, recreational craft and even a crew team from Boston preparing for US Team Trials make use of the river throughout the year. Take an eco-tour or rent a pontoon boat from a local marina to explore. Charting our way As we motored up the river, Rick kept watch using official paper charts. I tuned in to my Navionics app on the iPhone so that we had a system of doublechecks as we navigated upstream. Although most of the main channel was evident simply because of the width of the river, there were a few possible diversions, especially around Dunn’s Creek and also Crescent Lake. Rick and I worked out a communications system, using verbal acknowledgments as we progressed. We even said, “copy that” a few times as a tribute to a couple of our favorite television

The abundance of wildlife, particularly waterfowl, along the river includes brown pelicans, sea gulls and cormorants, who share space willingly.

shows: “Chicago Fire” and “Seal Team.” At home we joke that we have selective hearing, so “copy that” has become our nice way of saying “I heard you.” Along the way, I kept chanting to myself, “red on the right,” for “Red, Right Returning” as we made our way toward the river’s source. It helped me keep the red channel markers on the correct side as my guide. Trouble in paradise As we approached Lake George four hours into our first day’s journey, the 2-stroke outboard started beeping. We knew what it meant, so Rick visually checked the oil; he had topped it off before we left Palatka. It was still full. He also checked the cooling water discharge stream. It, too, was fine. We decided to forge ahead and entered Lake George. Known for its shallow water – around 2 feet throughout, except for the dredged channel that was clearly marked – it can

be the biggest challenge of the 70-mile cruise. In high winds, the waves multiply in height, making the lake a bit uncomfortable for a small boat. A mile in, the beeping changed to a shrill screech, indicating that the outboard had overheated. The boat stopped. Thank goodness for TowBoatUS. I had grabbed my membership card and my Allstate Boat Insurance policy at the last minute before we left home. A phone call to the 800 number put us in touch with the nearest towing company, located about 35 miles upriver from our location. Because of the many no-wake zones in the St. Johns during manatee season, it took the folks from the Astor TowBoatUS about 90 minutes to reach us on the far side of the lake from them. Soon we were being towed to Astor where we had already planned to stay the night at Castaways by the River.

By the time we arrived, everyone at Castaways knew our plight. The staff reserved a slip for us right by the office and a mechanic helped us properly diagnose the problem. The oil sensor had shorted out. A quick work-around with advice to keep an eye on the oil level had us back up and running in less than 30 minutes. After settling in to our rooms, we headed to dinner at Blackwater Inn, known for its fresh – and yummy – seafood. Wednesday morning we backtracked for a cruise up the run at Silver Glenn Springs on the southwestern side of Lake George. Along the way, we enjoyed myriad wildlife from Great Blue Herons to Snowy Egrets, Florida gators to logs topped with sunning turtles. Reaching our final destination After exploring the springs, we turned southward for Hontoon Island Resort and Marina. There on See Shore Lines, page 19

• Shore Lines Continued from Page 18 Thursday morning, we met up with Captain Holly, a local naturalist, to explore Dead River behind Hontoon Island State Park. What a misnomer. The river is anything but dead. It gets its name from its dead-end and no second connection to the St. Johns. Over the years, a narrow, shallow canal has been dug so that boats don’t have to backtrack to exit. Along this canal, lined with fallen trees and low-hanging branches, the wildlife is abundant. It was mating season, so we saw Great Blue Herons, Calico Herons, Night Herons, Snowy Egrets, and other water fowl all decked out in their finest plumage. Additionally, the area was filled with Wood Storks, Cormorants, several varieties of ducks, more than a dozen alligators and multiple types of turtles. We’d planned to stay two nights and head back on Friday, but threatening weather, high winds and falling temperatures predicted for Friday cut our trip short, and we elected to head back to Palatka on Thursday afternoon. From the stories I’d heard,

Victorian-style homes surrounded by palm trees represent a more elegant time along the St. Johns.

crossing Lake George is discouraged in bad weather, not only because of the shallows, but also because of the high waves. And the thought of spending a cold rainy day on the water with the wind off our nose was enough to convince us to leave early. The weather was moving in late afternoon as we finished our Lake George crossing. Predicted rain and cooler winds didn’t start until we were about an hour away from Crystal Cove Marina, and we made it back to Palatka just

before dark, a bit wet and cold, but grateful to be ready to drive home Friday morning. Our St. Johns River cruise didn’t really satisfy my curiosity about “my river,” but it did whet my appetite to further explore this ancient waterway and learn more of its secrets and surprises. It also has given me the experience and confidence to venture on more boating cruises at the helm of my boat. Who knows? Maybe Rick and I will make plans to do the Great Loop, one bit at a time.

Weather patterns remain stuck in neutral These have certainly been some challenging times, to say the least. I am hoping we can all keep a positive attitude until we get back to normal. On to the weather. I am extremely happy severe storm season has been off to a slow start for north Georgia. I know the rain has been relentless but that is having both positive and negative effects. Our favorite lake is at full pool and we are not concerned about low lake levels as in the previous past five years. For those of us who suffer from allergies, the rain has certainly kept the pollen counts way down. I have been looking at the weather patterns and from what I’ve seen, we are likely to see the above average rainfall continue. Most years we have an El Nino weather pattern or a La Nina pattern. Both are the result of changing sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Nino is ocean warming and La Nina is ocean cooling. El Nino will bring us colder temps and above average rainfall. La Nina brings more sunshine and above average temperatures.

We don’t have either. We are in what is called a “neutral” pattern, Glenn which has resulted in Burns this relentless rainfall and the above average winter temperatures we Lanier had this year. Outlook A neutral pattern like this is fairly unusual and there’s just not a lot of data to look at. From the extended forecast models I have seen, this wet pattern will be relentless this spring. With more clouds, we will likely see a more stable atmosphere, resulting in fewer severe weather days. As cold fronts continue to become weaker by the end of the month and on into May, we just might have an entire severe storm season with only a couple of outbreaks. I am keeping my fingers crossed! I have been looking at new data coming from the Climate Prediction Center regarding our summer weather patterns. The CPC is betting on the neutral pattern to break down but there’s no timing on that. If it does, we may see some good drying in June. I will keep you posted. Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Beverly ACE Hardware opens in Gainesville; includes Bass Pro Shops and Hallmark Gold By Pamela A. Keene Brothers Matt and Mark Beverly are living their dream. After years working for other people, the two men have opened Beverly ACE Hardware in Gainesville. Built from the ground up, the 29,000-square-foot store features a couple of familiar and in-demand brands: Bass Pro and Hallmark Gold Crown. “Both of us had our own businesses, but we decided we wanted to do something different and do it together,” said Matt, who owned a landscape company in North Georgia. Mark had a computer business. “We were both in businesses that served the public, but we wanted to make people’s lives easier. Building an ACE hardware co-op just suited us.” Their new journey began two

years ago with site selection, design and plenty of planning. They purchased land at 1963 Jesse Jewell Parkway in the New Holland area of Gainesville and got to work. Groundbreaking in April 2019 was followed by 10 months of construction. The store opened on January 7 of this year. “Our store doesn’t look like a typical hardware,” Matt said. “It’s two-story built out of glass and stone so if you’re looking for a traditional hardware, you might pass us. But we’re here and have plenty to offer the community.” The brothers carefully curated the store’s products, going deep into what people expect from a hardware. But they added a couple of twists. “We’ve got 5,000 square feet dedicated to fishing, watersports and outdoor items for

camping and grilling from Bass Pro and another 5,000 square feet for our Hallmark Gold Crown Club to offer gift items and more,” Matt said. “We also carry a full line of Stihl outdoor power equipment and have a garden department and greenhouse with annuals and perennials.” Mark and Matt have settled on a natural division of responsibilities. “Mark works behind the scenes, making good use of his computer and technical experience and I’m out front managing employees and the day-to-day.” Matt said his favorite part of the job is taking care of the store’s 35 employees. “Mark and I are very family-oriented and that’s the way we manage our business,” Matt said. “Our employees are all genuinely excited to work here. And I believe that the most important thing is meeting people where they are and treating people well.” The Beverly brothers grew up in Lawrenceville. Mark is married to Heather and they have two children. Matt is married to Beth and they have one son. “We’re both in our early 40s and we’ve always been good friends,” Matt

ENJOY SAFE BOATING ON THE LAKE!

Some of you may have had the opportunity of attending one of these vehicle sporting events in the past. Older model, heavy, very elaborately dented and decorated cars hurl around a dirt covered arena, sometimes at high speeds. The ultimate goal: wreck as many opponents as possible and be the last car driving. The defined area for this spectacle has no lane dividing lines, directional signs, lights, or smooth pavement to guide the way. The result is a noisy, action packed experience for both spectator and driver. Does this description sound somewhat familiar on the Lake Lanier during peak, crowded times? After just a few hours the surface of the water becomes much rougher with wake and wave. Vessel traffic increases with each one traveling a different direction and speed, adding to the risk of collision or grounding. These are the times when being on the water feels like the Demolition Derby. There is a remedy to this unwanted situation and it delivers outstanding benefits to everyone involved and to general boating safety especially. It is as simple as information! THE OUTDOORS NEVER CLOSE

Folks enjoy getting out there to enjoy the fresh air By Jane Harrison What never closes: The Outdoors! Everyone needs a bigger world beyond their doors during this troubled time of closures, cancellations and social distancing. As the dreary winter faded last month, plenty of folks around Lake Lanier were heading outside to the vastness of the lake, the budding beauty of trails, and the pure joy of physical exertion in the fresh air. A Lakeside News tour of local parks, boat ramps, and trails revealed parking lots full of outdoor revelers who were strolling paths, pulling in fish, and clipping into bike shoes as spring began. Basketballs bounced at pick-up games in Clermont Park. A wayward golf ball soared across the road at Chicopee Woods Golf Course, while down the way mountain bikers muddied their tires and hikers laced up their boots. At the University of North Georgia Gainesville Campus, runners and walkers circled lanes on the track, families played on the grassy infield, and an outdoor exercise class sweated by the tennis courts. The North Hall Community Center closed its doors, but that didn’t keep hundreds of active folks away from the park. They headed out to the woodsy trails and meadow to walk, bird watch, and bask in a ray of sunshine. On Gainesville’s pedestrian friendly Riverside Drive and on the sidewalks of Green Street, more than the usual number of

A smattering of dates was still available for April at premium camp sites. Folks are flocking in. Although county and city Guys on scooters and bicycles rolled along the Riverside corridor framed in early spring blooms. The Georgia Appalachian Trail Club canceled its guided hikes in the mountains, but no one can close the trails. Club members and lone sojourners planned their own treks to the gushing streams, wildflower patches, and greening vistas. A Dahlonega tourism website posted compelling photos of social distancing: a surging waterfall, mountain peaks, and a woodsy footpath. The wide-open spaces rePHOTO BY JANE HARRISON mained just that. Taking the pain out of gardening with straw bales Do you want to have a productive vegetable patch without constantly weeding? Is your gardening space limited by too much shade? Then straw bale gardening is for you. It’s simple and has great benefits. It’s like starting with brand-new growing medium, so you won’t have weeds, diseases or insects. Here’s how: Start with large compact bales of wheat straw and place them on landscape fabric in a location that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Place them in rows with at least 6 feet between each row. Have a water source nearby; you’ll be watering frequently. Evenly apply about a half-cup of inexpensive fertilizer, such as 1010-10 or one that has a high first number, to each bale and water it thoroughly until water runs out of the bottom. Over the next 10 to 14 days soak the bales every day. Every couple of days add more fertilizer before watering to create a nutrient-rich planting medium. Sampling beer at Six Bridges Brewery in Johns Creek Nestled in the heart of Johns Creek, surrounded by trees and with a great laid back feel, you will find Six Bridges Brewery. The first and only brewery in the Johns Creek area, it is named after the number of bridges that cross the Chattahoochee in, that’s right, Johns Creek. The brewery itself consists of a 10,000 square foot brew house containing a 30-barrel main system, along with a 2-barrel pilot system. For those who don’t know, breweries have large production systems, and utilize a much smaller system for research and development of new beers. Created by the first father and son team in the state to start their own brewery, Charles and Clay Gridley, opened the doors of Six Bridges Brewery in December 2018. They have produced some very tasty beers in a short period of time. The taproom is dog and kid friendly both inside and out, which sets this brewery apart. While we were there, more than 10 dogs were getting along nicely. If you do decide to bring your dog, please be honest with

Michael & Sali Duling For the Love of Beer

yourself and bring only well behaved dogs to this or any brewery. In reality, the same goes for children. The outside area has several picnic tables, cornhole games and is lit for the nighttime crowd. This is a brewery where everyone can feel comfortable. They have a board for people that want to “Pour it forward” by buying a beer for a first responder, military or just a particular friend that visits at a later date. This is a nice idea for those that are on the front lines keeping all of us safe.

The beers • Medlock - A New England India Pale Ale coming in at 6.2% ABV, this is the number one seller for the brewery. Made with Mosaic, Simcoe and Citra hops, it has a golden, hazy appearance. A little juicy on the nose but those of you not into juicy IPAs need to continue on into the first sip as this beer is smooth and not overly juicy. It’s responsibly hopped with just a hint of bitterness, and true to its New England style, a piney taste rounding it out. A nice, dry crisp finish makes this a refreshing beer with a great taste. • Shelby - An American Golden Ale coming in at a mild 4.3% ABV, this is the number two seller for the brewery. An easy drinking, smooth everyday beer with a crisp finish. There is a smooth sweetness balanced by a slight bit of hops at the finish. This is one to fill the cooler with for a day on the lake or an evening at the campfire. No one will refuse drinking this beer, including your crazy cousin who says he doesn’t like craft beer. • Abandoned Shadows - An Imperial Double Stout coming in at a hefty 12.2% ABV. Heavy

mouth feel is instantly noticeable, hints of chocolate and vanilla with a slight roasted coffee flavor. High alcohol level but not a boozy taste as one would normally expect. A slight bitterness that I was not expecting. An enjoyable pint all in all. You knew a big dark beer had to be in the mix. Don’t be afraid of the dark! • Sour Continuum With Blueberry and Pink Guava - A Sour Berliner Weisse coming in at 5% ABV. A nice light and mild sour, but not a tastebud butt puckering sour level though. The blueberry is muted and the guava comes through smoothly along with other fruits in a good blend. A well flavored beer with fruit but not heavy enough to be distracting. This is a sour that I could drink more than one of at a sitting, and I am not a big fan of sours. • Cloudy Shoes - A Belgian Witbier coming in at 5% ABV. A very nice and mild witbier, a great summer beer that you could drink several of while on the lake. Slightly sweet, not a heavy hop (bitter) flavor, and a clean crisp finish make this another all day beer.

The entire brewery was clean, well kept and inviting. Several times during our visit we saw the staff cleaning the surfaces people normally touch, all the doors, bar, and tables were scrubbed. The staff was top notch, not only on the service side but also on their knowledge of beer. If you are looking for a brewery to start your adventures into visiting breweries and branching out to different styles, I recommend you give Six Bridges Brewing a try. If you are a veteran beer taster and prefer more styles than usual, I was not disappointed at this taproom. I struggle at times as I prefer darker and heavily flavored beer, but they had a good variety on tap which is much appreciated. Sali enjoyed the sours and IPA as the weather was hinting of Spring. Packaged beer is available in the tap room as well as shirts and other items. Slàinte! Michael works around Lake Lanier and Sali is a contract negotiator in the data industry. Integrating smart tech in your home remodel “Alexa, turn the lights on downstairs.” “Google, set the temperature to 68 degrees.” “Hey Siri, is my garage door open?” When it comes to smart technology for the home, options are endless. And while there are plenty of gadgets you can install yourself to add convenience and fun to your home, there are other, more comprehensive upgrades to think about when planning to renovate. Without integration into your HVAC, lighting or home security system, your Amazon Echo can give you the weather, play music and tell you a joke, but it can’t do any of the commands listed above. We’ve put together a few smart ideas you can add to enhance your home, as well as some bigger picture ideas that can truly revolutionize the way you live. Smart doorbells Smart doorbell cameras like Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest Hello, among many others, have made headlines for their usefulness in catching package thieves red-handed. While these devices are relatively easy to set up if you know your way around

nMORE INFO: tracytesmerremodeling.com a smartphone and a drill, you aren’t exactly getting the bang for your buck that you would if the devices were integrated into your home’s smart lighting, locks and more. That shouldn’t necessarily deter you from getting one. Being able to see who is at your door and even communicate with them from inside is useful for personal safety and entertaining the grandkids. Smart thermostats While convenience is king when it comes to many smart home features, the efficiency upgrades they bring shouldn’t be overlooked. Smart thermostats are not only a great way to regulate temperature in your home while you’re there (who wouldn’t

like to adjust the temperature in the middle of the night without getting out of bed?) but they are especially handy when you’re gone. Energy-saving experts will tell you it’s not a good idea to constantly tinker with your temperature settings. Replacing outdated HVAC equipment when you remodel however, combined with a smart thermostat, can pay off more quickly than you think. The added efficiency of the new unit, along with the ability for a few touches on your smartphone to ramp up the AC when you’re on the way back from that summertime beach trip, can’t be beat. Bathroom upgrades If you are a more adventurous DIYer, you may feel comfortable replacing an old toilet with a newer water-conserving model. That’s a great start! As you think about other ways to upgrade your bathroom, don’t forget about other possibilities that may require professional help to get just right. An experienced designbuild professional can create a plan for your bathroom that incorporates radiant heat into the floors and wiring that enables you to listen to your favorite podcast or

playlist while you’re getting ready for work or relaxing after a long day. “Hey Alexa, play Shower Songs!” Kitchen convenience The “kitchen is the heart of the home” is a popular cliché because for PHOTO: TRACY TESMER DESIGN/REMODELING many families, it’s true. Tail of the Dragon gives rite of passage to racers Regardless of where you come from or what form of motor racing you might love, until you have survived the 11 miles and 318 curves in the “Tail of the Dragon,” you haven’t earned the “the rite of passage” in the sport! This section of US Highway 129 touches the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest and has no intersecting roads or driveways to impede the speed. The Tail of the Dragon was first paved in the early 1930s, but its recorded history dates back to the 1700s when it was a trail for hunters and trappers. Before that, it existed as an Indian trail. It was designated US 129 in 1934 but was only lightly traveled until the 1990s when the road was publicized by a motorcycle enthusiast. For the past three decades, businesses that cater to motorcycle and car enthusiasts have appeared for those who make pilgrimages to try The Dragon. The road curves and winds through the wooded landscape like one’s mental picture of the lines on a real dragon. Many corners are blind, and it is easy to outrun your line of sight long before that of the car’s performance. You might think you need something with big power and fantastic lateral grip, but those cars end up decorating the trees along The Dragon. There are legends that this road is haunted, and other rumors that the area is a magical land with the power to take hold of people and possess part of their being … which is believable! When you’re behind the wheel of a fast car, the Tail of the Dragon is about you, the pavement, two white knuckles holding tightly to a steering wheel and a stretch of road that is considered one of the most exciting drives in the world.

It dissects the mountains starting at Deals Gap on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line all the way to the pull over at Calderwood Overlook. This beautiful scenic overlook offers a gorgeous view of the Cheoah Dam. Also, it’s a fantastic panorama of the Smoky Mountains and Tennessee countryside. The legend of the Tail of the Dragon has spread far beyond North Carolina and Tennessee, and has even caught the eye of movie producers, celebrities and documentary crews. The road and nearby Cheoah Dam were featured in “The Fugitive” and parts of the gearhead classic “TwoLane Blacktop” that actually features much of the road at the very end of the movie. Whether you’re starting or completing the Tail of the Dragon at the intersection of US 129 and NC Highway 28, Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort is a good place to snap pictures, grab souvenirs, eat lunch, have a cold beverage or even spend the night. Also check out the Tail of the Dragon Store across the street for more great souvenirs and your obligatory photo with the giant eponymous Dragon sculpture. This area is extremely popular for those who love to challenge

the many exciting whitewater rapids of the mountain rivers. Therefore, kayaks, canoes, tubes and other water devices are a common sight in this section of the Smoky Mountains. The Dragon is not for the timid … but it is also not for the foolish! It is an exciting ride even without racing wide open around blind corners and at double the speed limit while trying to earn the “rite of passage!” Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Cottages of Lake Lanier: community living with lake views By Pamela A. Keene As one of the lake’s newest communities, North Hall’s The Cottages of Lake Lanier offers homeowners a chance to have a slip on a community dock. With 22 homesites, the 18-acre gated community has begun selling homes that start in the low $500,000s. It is served by North Hall schools. “Many of the homes have lake views, and all have master suites on the main floor,” says Debbie Foster, agent with The Norton Agency, who is representing The Cottages with Norton agent Ashley Santiago. “It’s a lifestyle community that offers excellent amenities and carefree living.” The gated community features walking trails, a lakeside pavilion, a community dock with 18 slips and full yard maintenance. Homes have at least three bedrooms with an option to finish a fourth

and/or fifth bedroom. In addition to the master on the main, a full guest suite with its own bathroom is also located on the main floor. Some of the homes have a terrace level that can be built out with a second kitchen, a recreation room and additional bedroom. Others models are built on a slab. All homes are two stories and start at 2,500square feet of finished space. One plan has the option to add an elevator. The Craftsman-style homes have 10foot ceilings on the main floor and terrace level and 9-foot ceilings upstairs. Designed and built by Thomas Homes and Communities, based in Woodstock, the community features a furnished decorated model, which can be purchased as furnished.
