Lake Lanier Association members hear good news at annual meeting

By Pamela A. Keene A little threat of rain didn’t dampen spirits at the Lake Lanier Association’s annual meeting on March 24 at Port Royale. Hundreds attended the event that featured “A Taste of the Lake” preview of lake restaurants, a positive report from the association and information about the ACF Stakeholders, a group that’s been at work for nearly 10 years to build consensus along the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint River Basin.

Association President Wilton Rooks highlighted accomplishments by the group over the past 12 months. The adopt-a-lake committee monitors 24 locations around Lanier each month to test for water quality. The association has installed 284 solar lights on hazard markers; it has installed rip-rap on four islands to help reduce erosion. And the 2017 Shore Sweep, with more than 1,000 volunteers, netted 54 tons of trash and debris from the lake and shoreline. He said that the group’s income has increased by 34 percent.

“A major message from the association is that Georgia is fueled by water and a major part of the that water comes from Lake

Lanier. Lanier is not hydrologically connected the entire state, but it is economically connected.

Is there a future water problem?

We think it’s time to find out.”

Rooks outlined the group’s opportunities for action. They include continuing to reduce per capita consumption, increase water efficiency among businesses, including agriculture, rethink the use of water for hydropower, analyze the costs of inter-basin transfers and increase the lake’s storage capacity by keeping two feet more water in Lanier. he called for a study to determine the benefits and costs.

He also cited recent passage of two Georgia resolutions creating committees to study ways to tap into the Tennessee River along the borders of Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Following the business meeting, ACF Stakeholders’ Executive Manager Mark Masters filled attendees in about the work that the group has been doing since it was founded almost 10 years ago.

Masters “The group, since the beginning, agreed to operate

by consensus,” Masters said.

“That basically meant that each of the 56 members would need to be able to say, ‘I can live with that,’ with decisions made. It makes each stakeholder’s voice a powerful one.”

The organization comprises 56 distinct organizations from along the basin. The group divided the basin into four sub-basins, then brought together 14 interest caucus representatives from each of those four regions. They represent interests in water supply, water quality, recreation, hydropower, farming and urban agriculture, local government, history and culture, navigation and other more.

“The basin is a diverse geographic area and we set out to

consider the perspectives of all the stakeholders,” Masters said.

“We all agreed that the basin can be managed better than politicians.”

In 2015, the ACF Stakeholders adopted a Sustainable Water Management Plan, making it available to government officials, local organizations along the ACF Basin and the Corps of Engineers.

“It’s not the silver bullet, but it’s a heck of a place to start,” Masters said, referring to a possible resolution of the Tri-State Water Wars, which have raged on for nearly 30 years.

The Lake Lanier Association is soliciting input about the next phase of its Solar Lights initiative. The association has installed more than 280 yellow solar lights on hazard markers around Lake Lanier. Lanier back to full pool after nearly 20 months

By Pamela A. Keene Water levels at Lake Lanier have finally reached full winter pool of 1070 mean feet above sea level (msl) for the first time since May 2016 thanks in part to heavy rains in early February.

“Two things have contributed to reaching full winter pool this year,” said James Hathorn, Mobile District Water Management Chief.

“It was a combination of enlisting drought operations for the (ACF River Basin) at the right time over the course of the last year, and heavy precipitation in the area over the last 10 days (between February 5 and 15).”

With heavy rainfall in the winter of 2015-16, Lake Lanier water levels spiked to almost 1076 feet above sea level, nearly five feet above full summer pool of 1071.

By late January 2016 levels had dropped back to around full pool.

But as of mid-May 2016, levels started to decline again as North Georgia faced rainfall deficits and various stages of drought.

After maintaining levels around full summer pool for several months, water levels steadily dropped from May 2016 to December 2016 to a low of just above 1060.

By spring of 2017, the Corps entered drought operations, which meant reducing the outflows from Buford Dam to account for the drought. Increased rainfall between mid-March and mid-July brought levels to around 1065, and the Corps suspended drought operations. The levels remained around 1065-1066, until early February 2018.

The recent significant rainfall has brought the lake levels to just over 1070 msl. According to the Corps’ four-week projections, lake levels may drop slightly through mid-April.

“Beyond five weeks is difficult to forecast,” Hathorn said. “How water levels at Lake Lanier fare through the remainder of the spring and summer will depend greatly on the amount of rainfall that we receive across the entire ACF system because we operate it as a whole, and not by individual projects.”

Federally authorized project purposes include flood-risk management, hydropower, navigation, water supply, water quality, fish and wildlife conservation and recreation. However, “the greatest contributing factor to reservoir levels is amount of precipitation above and below the dam,” said Tim Oberle, with the Mobile District.

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area guides The Southern Fishing Report by Ken Sturdivant Lake level: Full winter pool Clarity: Creeks stained, main lake clear Temp: mid-50s Bass Fishing I have heard that the Corps plans to keep the lake up and fairly steady through the spawn, which is excellent news. I hope this is truly the case, as it will lend to a solid bass and baitfish spawn.

While the recent cold has knocked them back somewhat, they are still biting. Many options to catch fish still exist and you can pretty much chose your approach, although one will work better than another on any given day. A Picasso Shake down head and worm combo is hard to beat right now for bites. SPRO crankbaits like a Rock Crawler or a Castaway Baits 15 shad crank and jerk baits like a McStick along with double willow spinnerbaits have all been working well. And that Keitech on a jig head is still working well when slow reeled on the bottom. The location and technique for the best bite does seem to vary each day. There are some early spring techniques working out in deeper water, but we have remained focused on the

pre spawn activity in shallower water (1 to 20 feet). Try one type of area or technique, and if that is not working, move on. We are working shallow, flat points, both rock and clay, in pockets as well as on the main lake. The steeper stuff has held fish too, and can be a good choice given the recent cold fronts. The longer running points are starting to hold fish as well. Check the reef poles and shoal markers on warmer days.

On cooler days, make sure to look out at the very ends of these places in deeper water. Creeks and main lake are both producing.

Focus more on the main lake or mouths of creeks for the bigger fish, and back in the creeks for numbers, but you are apt to catch a big fish anywhere right now. As usual for this time of year, the docks are also holding fish.

Check those docks back in creeks or pockets that are in 20 feet of water and less. With the cold fronts, check some of those in deeper water as well, as these can be productive for those fish just moving up or ones that have pulled back due to the colder conditions. Look at the last two or three docks in any creek arm or

pocket for those largemouth.

Look for the fish to be under the docks when the sun is up, and around the docks in low light or clouds. A Picasso Shake Down head and worm combo or a Spro jerk bait and an Ito Vision 110 are good options around the docks.

Striper Fishing Striper fishing is fair. The warmer temperatures will fire up the stripers, though. They will be looking to pack on the weight in preparation for the spawn. The recent weather has favored the smaller medium shiners but look for the larger herring to replace the shiners as the preferred baits.

Fish free lines and planner boards shallow with the bank side planner board set at 20 feet behind the board, free lines at 70 to 100 feet behind the boat and the deep water boards at 50 to 80 feet behind the boards. Use split shots on some of the lines to ensure depth coverage. We are using a 5foot, 15-pound test fluorocarbon leader on all of our lines. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.0 miles per hour.

Expect the bite to slow when the sun gets up on those blue bird sky days, move to deeper water, slow your presentation and deploy a couple of down rods in addition to your free lines. Also, keep someone on the front deck casting a Captain Mack’s 1/2 ounce buck tail jig with a fluke.

Not all the fish will move to the back of the creeks and rivers. The open water bite has lasted through out the spring for the past couple of years. We caught a couple of stripers with the Umbrella rigs recently pulling at 3 mph over deep open water at 100 feet back. The south end of the lake continues to out fish the north end but look for that to change as the water warms.

Crappie Fishing Fishing is good to excellent until the wind blows us off the lake! Most days are calmer in the morning, so we get out early but pack our gear and head to the boat ramp when the wind picks up. Some fish have already moved back to shallow water (five foot depths). Our advice

though, is to not get locked into any specific pattern, experiment with different depths. The weather is dictating changes in the water temps, thus affecting the movement of the fish. They are still feeding well, once you get on them. If you feel it is helpful to use your side scan, that’s always an option. But our preference is generally to sneak up on a dock that usually performs well, and start shooting jigs into the darkest areas. It will only take a few minutes to determine if fish are present. If we don’t get a bite in the first few minutes, we move. Hair jigs and soft body jigs are performing equally well. Anything with chartreuse is a good color to use. Crappie minnows are always a good alternative.

Long line trolling using curly tails are also producing well, single or double rigged. Always experiment with colors; you never know what they may be hitting most that day.

Work under way for widening of Lanier Islands Parkway to Lanier Islands

By Pamela A. Keene The last phase of construction and widening of Lanier Islands Parkway from McEver Road to the entrance of Lanier islands is well under way. When complete, the project will feature a round-about, two 12-foot-wide travel lanes, a 14-foot center turn lane and right-turn lanes.

“The contracts have been let and work has begun to improve the functionality and mobility of the corridor,” said Katie Strickland with the Georgia Department of Transportation. “In fact, all the right-of-way needed was purchased in 2016 for a total of approximately $11.5 million for the 2.4mile section.”

The road will also be pedestrian- and bicycle- friendly. It will have a 10-foot multiuse path and a separate 5-foot sidewalk.

“It will provide super connectivity to such areas as Mulberry Park and Brasel-

ton,” she said. “It’s very post-millennial.

People will be able to use golf carts.”

The road will also be straightened, with a section of it constructed to the east of the existing lanes and a portion of the new roadbed has already been constructed.

The round-about will be installed between the former church at New Bethany Road and Big Creek Road. “The roundabout will be large enough to accommodate tractor trailers,” Strickland said. “It will make it easier for people towing their boats. We don’t want people to be afraid to put their boat on a trailer and travel on Lanier Islands Parkway.”

The work began in September 2017.

Strickland said that rainy weather in the first quarter of 2018 slowed the construction, but that the work began in earnest in February. Target completion date is October 2019.

The Corps of Engineers needs to do an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) to evaluate the issues associated with managing the lake with a higher full pool level. We know it would not be at 1073 all of the time. But what would be the average elevation and frequency of being at 1073?

Almost 3 years ago, the ACF Stakeholders’ 56 member Governing Board approved a Sustainable Water Management Plan (SWMP) with specific recommendations to more equitably share the waters of the ACF Basin. Those recommendations were based on hundreds of model runs conducted by water scientists at the Georgia Tech Research Center. The model runs conclusively demonstrated that two more feet in Lake Lanier would benefit all of the water interests from Lake Lanier to Apalachicola, FL.

LLA believes that it is time to take the SWMP seriously and do a proper EIS to answer the questions surrounding life on Lake Lanier at 1073.

We have installed over 280 solar battery lights on some of the existing hazard markers on the water to aid in nighttime navigation. Lights are installed from Buford Dam up to Nix Bridge Park on the Chestatee side and Lake Lanier Olympic Park on the Chattahoochee side. These lights are purchased, installed, monitored and maintained by the LLA with your support.

Working with first responder agencies and local municipalities, we continue to strive for ways to enhance boating safety on Lake Lanier through educations, advocacy and enforcement. The LLA has also created a boating safety “rule of the road” infographic and has distributed thousands of them free of charge to the local boating community.

In 1996 my wife and I were Olympic volunteers working the Mistral (Windsurfer) sailing course in Savannah. Our task was to run the gear boat, where we enjoyed advantages that just about outweighed the disadvantages.

For instance, a disadvantage was that we were the last to leave the venue each day after compiling a list of the equipment we would need to replace (lost anchors, turning marks, binoculars, batteries for the GPSs etc.) as well as lunch and drinks for the 80 or so other volunteers on our course. Then we were at the warehouse first thing in the morning to pick it all up and transport it to the venue.

However, an advantage was that we were among the few who had a pass to bring our car onto the venue, while everyone else had to park at a remote location, go through security, and then take a school bus over. We also had the IYRU (International Yacht Racing Union) rep and the Mistral rep on our boat and had the freedom to go wherever we wanted on the course, as opposed to monitoring one spot such as a turning mark or start line. Rethinking ‘April showers’ April in north Georgia.

What stands out in north Georgia this month?

Easter? The Dogwood trees in bloom? The pine pollen that covers everything in a film of yellow dust? For me, April is the driest month of the year. I know what you’re thinking. It’s spring and what about all the April showers? Based on the last 30 years of climatology, the average rainfall for the month is 3.36 inches, making it the driest month of the year. If you are now wondering what the wettest month of the year is, you would have to look at July. We average 5.27 inches of rain in July.

If you are a golfer, then you know April means the Masters. Augusta National is always a spectacle of color with the azalea’s and blooming trees. Even though April is the driest month of the year, there is a tendency to see stormy weather and even freezing cold temperatures, like last year. You may also remember April 3rd, of last year. Eight tornadoes hit north Georgia and caused widespread destruction. Then much of our peach crop was wiped out by the cold that followed.

What I am trying to point out is that even though April is the driest month, it is not necessarily the calmest month. We had supercell thunderstorms last month with three devastating tornadoes in metro Atlanta. It can and does happen in April too.

We are still dealing with “weather wars”

being waged in the atmosphere when cold air meets warm air. There is Glenn so much spin in the atmosphere in the spring Burns from changing wind speeds to changing wind Lanier direction with height. I Outlook have seen just showers, without lightning, rotate and spin up small tornadoes. We all need to be weather aware, even during the driest month of the year.

I know we are all looking forward to the warmer temperatures this month. With the higher sun angle and more hours of daylight, our warming will surely continue. However, I do see a pattern where we might see several more blasts of cold air. And don’t think it still can’t snow this time of year. Many of you may remember the six inches of snow that fell in our northern suburbs back in 1985. I am not saying we’re going to have a snowstorm this month but there have been years when some heavy April snows have occurred.

You may remember the Climate Prediction Center Winter Weather Outlook I wrote about last fall. With the cooler central Pacific Ocean temperatures firmly in place, (La Nina) the outlook called for our winter to be warm and dry. Of course, as we all know, it turned out to be brutally cold with above average rainfall and two incredible snow storms. I was getting a little concerned through the early part of winter when it was so dry and then the

Boat mechanic gives new life to burned-out houseboat

By Pamela A. Keene Boat mechanic Tony Cato knows how to turn lemons into lemonade. When a houseboat burned at Port Royale Marina last fall, he saw it as an opportunity to add a 73-foot working boat to his stable of business offerings.

The 1992 Lazy Days boat’s upper structure has been demolished and Cato has recreated it into a large platform with new decking and an 8-ton Knuckleboom crane. He added a steering station at the rear. “It gives me great visibility and we’re been able to use it to move docks and lift engines. It’s great for pulling generators and engines without having to haul the boats out. It’s real versatile.”

He has also offered it to the Georgia Department of Natural

Resources to use as a platform for investigations, search and recoveries on the lake and can make it available to other organizations and businesses around the lake.

I did read where the state government was again investigating the mistake that was made by the original surveyors for the state lines of Georgia. The line was supposed to go down the middle of the Tennessee River, but they made a mistake and marked it south of the river where it is now.

Hurricane Maria: Lanier Corps officials help with disaster recovery

By Pamela A. Keene all and winter, usually a little slower time for the Corps of Engineers at Lake Lanier, was nothing but, thanks to a pair of hurricanes in the Caribbean that left Puerto Rico nearly flattened without water and power for months.

Over the past six months, about 10 percent of the Corps’ Lake Lanier staff have been deployed for disaster relief for the U.S. Territory, joining other Corps employees from around the world.

“The Federal Emergency Management Agency – FEMA – takes the lead in natural disasters recovery and relief, and the Corps of Engineers is called in to assist state or local jurisdictions to clear debris, provide temporary power Rainey and other necessary services,” says Tim Rainey, operations project manager for Lake Lanier. Over his 25 years with the Corps he has been deployed at least a half-dozen times.

Hurricane Harvey had already flooded parts of Texas, when Irma formed in the Caribbean and headed toward landfall. Right on its heels, Hurricane Maria aimed squarely for Puerto Rico, already suffering from the effects of Irma.

“When storms are projected, FEMA increases its preparations and communications with many agencies, including the Corps.”

The island was devastated, with an estimated six million cubic yards of debris, a total loss of power from the grid and compromised water distribution infrastructure. “The debris removal Mission Assignment for the Corps was 3.9 million cubic yards, which included damaged and destroyed buildings, trees and other structures,” Rainey said. “In addition, we were tasked with providing temporary roof installations for more than 60,000 structures and provided temporary power restoration and generator installation, but in the end, a new mission to rebuild the power grid was established.” This new mission was led by the Corps Pittsburgh District, which is the Corps Temporary Power Center of Expertise.

That’s what is still occurring, an estimated 50,000 power poles to be replaced, with all of the associated wiring, connectors, transformers, and everything else needed to provide distribution of power. This effort is taking place in conjunction with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).”

In the meantime, the Corps installed nearly 1,300 generators to supplement the hundreds sourced Pumps utilized to first lower Guajataca Lake and then to provide water locally. “As of mid-March, there were more than 800 federally profor downstream needs.

Rainey said. “The Corps’ Wilmington District was tasked with managing emergency functions related to Irma in the Virgin Islands. The Mobile District, which oversees Buford Dam, was tapped to lead the emergency management office for Maria recovery in Puerto Rico.”

Boots on the ground As the lead district for Maria, several Mobile District employees headed to Puerto Rico even before the hurricane made landfall. They were joined by Corps civilian employees from districts around the world, in all over 3,000 Corps staff have rotated through assignments to help the people of the island recover from the devastation.

“Staff from Lanier directly supported the Recovery Field Office and three of the FEMA Mission Assignments – helping restore critical public facilities, including police stations, fire stations and hospitals, debris removal, and installation of temporary roofs,” he said. “We

All Corps employees who were deployed volunteered for the assignments. For some, the work was similar to what they do in their daily jobs. But for others, it was a new experience. For instance, Lanier Program Analyst Angie Bowling has been working in debris removal. It’s a stretch from her work at Lanier. And across the board, civilian Corps employees are leaving their home jobs to help people whose lives have changed because of natural, or sometimes, man-made disasters.

No days off Corps Chief Ranger Ernest Noe was deployed to serve in an administrative/human resources leadership role as part of the command staff in the Recovery Field Office. It was his job to handle the comings and goings of Corps personnel, from scheduling to paperwork and communication. All staff worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week regardless of what function they were supporting. Park Ranger John Matlack worked in debris removal and has since returned home; Ranger JD Liebrock is expected back by early April.

Ranger Tim Campion in his first deployment for disaster recovery was charged with supporting the temporary roof mission.

“The goal is to provide temporary fixes, and our authorities are strict,” Rainey said. “If, after a damage assessment, it’s determined that the roof can be repaired, it’s our job to fix it temporarily to provide shelter and to prevent further water, wind and other damage. However, if a roof was beyond temporary repairs, it would not qualify for the program. Unfortunately, people, including the media, didn’t always understand our mission. You simply cannot temporarily fix a roof if there’s nothing left.” To date, more than 55,000 blue roofs have been installed by emergency recovery teams.

Rainey tells the back story about the hospital in Vieques that became a hot news item because of the type and pace of repairs.

“What the people didn’t understand is that the hospital was damaged beyond the capacity and scope of our recovery mission authorities,” Rainey said. “We go there to assist the local jurisdictions, but our response is still governed by law and our authorSee Recovery, page 30

Other Buford staff who were or are still deployed include Administrative Support Assistant Todd Purnell and Park Ranger Mark Millwood. Rainey said he expects all of his staff to be back by mid-April.

Organized under the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ work is broad, far beyond managing the nation’s more than 600 lakes, dams and projects, such as Buford Dam and Lake Lanier. With nearly 40,000 civilian employees, the organization is tasked with numerous projects, including locks and dams, managing flood control, maintaining and preserving public lands and recreation facilities, navigation projects and building military bases. Employees work around the world.

For the staff at Buford Dam who remained at home, they also expanded their responsibilities and workload while their coworkers were deployed.

“The work at Lake Lanier continues even when some of our staff is deployed elsewhere,” Rainey said. “The staff that are not able to deploy end up getting workload added to their responsibilities. Some of the major items that are ongoing are the implementation of the new Shoreline Management Permit database, continuing to work on the Project

Master Plan update, and improving efficiencies in the recreation fee program. These are on top of all of the regular day-to-day duties and responsibilities for the operation and maintenance of the lake and recreation areas.

“The situation from Hurricane Maria has been challenging for the people of Puerto Rico and all those working to re-establish a secure and safe sense of normalcy, and all of us throughout the Corps who are deployed on these types of projects are always glad to serve.”

By Jane Harrison Visitors at Don Carter State Park often come to fish and frolic in Lake Lanier, but there’s more in store on land at Georgia’s only state park on the popular lake.

Plans are finally coming to fruition for new hiking and horseback riding trails already cut through the park’s straggly backwoods.

A new park naturalist is leading hikers on sneak previews of the soon-to-open two-mile Dog Creek Trail, a foot-travel-only path that traverses near 12 miles of equestrian trails. No dates have been set for official opening, but word is the new paths will be ready for feet and hooves before the end of the year. They will be the first additions to the four miles of paved and dirt walkways that greeted guests when the park opened in July 2013.

Park officials said the trails are ready, but marking and map making is still underway. They discourage visitors from hiking the new territory until the trails are blazed and the park officially opens them. Park workers have already rescued three hiking parties that got lost. Until opening

day, guided tours offer a look at what’s to come.

Park naturalist Julie Dyer’s Sunday afternoon preview hikes on the Dog Creek Trail draw families with teenagers and elementary school children, seniors, and single hikers on the leisurely trek that loops through pine forest, young hardwoods, and occasional old growth trees. The trail spurs off the Woodland Trail near the primitive campsites toward its namesake Lake Lanier tributary.

The quiet, remote pathway leading to the meandering creek provides a nice respite from park’s paved paths, RV hook-ups, beach, boat ramp, and cottages.

Dyer calls a serene creek section overhung with beach trees and studded with boulders her favorite “quiet place” at the 1,316 acre park. She points out native plants and geologic features like “fool’s gold” and shares forest lore enroute to and back from the creek.

The moderate course runs up and down a couple of hills, but is relatively flat and easy to walk.

Similar to other Don Carter trails, it passes through some scrubby forest, with dead trees and broken

branches decaying off-trail.

Dyer said the park lost at least 100 trees when winds from Hurricane Irma whipped through North Georgia last September. An observer noted those only add to the hundreds already resting in the park.

After the preview hikes, Dyer invites participants to Picnic Shelter 4 near the beach to toast marshmallows and make s’mores.

The park provides the fixin’s.

Dyer and Park Manager Cliff Ainsworth speak excitedly about the upcoming season at Don Carter. With the lake back up to full pool, the beach gleams with white sand extending into the water, unlike last year when drought sunk the water past the swim buoy line.

Ainsworth said visitors trickled in over the winter. Visitation spiked in February and March, traditionally slows month at state parks, for rowing events and a national fishing tournament. Rowing crews and anglers filled cottages and campsites. The park’s star attraction, Lake Lanier, brings in most guests during the warm months.

She graduated to the Visitor’s Center Dyer and was thrilled to get an outdoor job as naturalist in January. “I’m excited to get out of the office finally and into the woods,” she said. She loves her work. “Who wouldn’t like getting to walk through the woods for your job?”

Age: 20. “I’ve been here since I was 16,” she said. Dyer lives just a few miles from the park on Clarks Bridge Road, where her family has a farm. Her dad, Mike Dyer, used to ride horses on the land where the park now sits.

Outdoor interests: Dyer grew up camping and hiking North Georgia woods. Her family camped annually at Vogel State Park, near Blairsville, continuing her father’s boyhood tradition of yearly pilgrimages to

Vogel.

Favorite part of Park: Dyer enjoys the woodsy trails, especially the quiet Dog Creek tread way.

Although the lake is the park’s main draw, she’s awed by the natural lure of the woods, including two sets of deer triplets and a bald eagle’s nest.

Future ambitions: Dyer is working part time as park naturalist while pursuing a degree in early childhood education at Truett McConnell College.

Goals for Park: “I’m excited.

We’ve got a lot of things planned,” she said, including paddling tours, scavenger hunts, group hikes, and a raft race.

Cliff Ainsworth: Park Manager Background at Georgia State Parks: Ainsworth came to Don Carter State Park last May after two years at Panola Mountain State Park in Stockbridge. The park on Lake Lanier “attracts a Ainsworth different kind of traffic” from the busy day use park in Metro Atlanta, he said.

Don Carter, with more than 60

overnight facilities (eight cottages, 44 tent, camper and RV campsites and 12 primitive campsites) attracts visitors for longer stays. “I have more time to build customer relationships and speak to people who come into the park,” he said.

Education: Ainsworth has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing from American International University.

Age: 39 Family: Ainsworth, his wife, Lisa, and their 12 year old son, Jason, live at the manager’s residence at the park. “I love being on the lake and the access to the beach fishing and trails,” he said. He also enjoys meeting visitors on his security rounds.

Favorite Part of Park: Besides interacting with visitors, Ainsworth likes the Dog Creek Trail. “It’s a short snippet of what’s to come,” he said.

Goals for Park: “We’re working on getting the horse trails open and the hiking trails completed,” he said. Signage and mapping are in progress. He believes the new trails, especially the equestrian courses, “are really special and will be a big draw.”

Finally, spring! With this year’s ups and downs of the thermometer, we’ve just about lost our patience, but even though Georgia’s last official frost date is April 15, you can still get out in your yard.

Let’s talk about lawns. Spring is the transition between the coolseason fescue and the warm-season grasses Bermuda and zoysia.

Fescue will hold up until it gets really hot, but you can stretch its green season with proper watering, regular care and mowing to the proper height.

“We recommend mowing about once a week for fescue,” said Steve Mitchell with King Green, based in Gainesville. “We also suggest that people aerate their warm-season grasses as soon as you can while the grass is just starting to green up. This allows water and nutrients to get to the roots and will thicken Bermuda and zoysia lawns.”

It’s really too late to putdown pre-emergents to address crabgrass, goose grass and other grasses and broadleaf weeds once we’re into April.

“If not, you may need simply pull the weeds and get ahead of them before the weather turns really warm.”

You can also use a lawn-safe post-emergent to keep these broadleaf weeds at bay. Be sure to read all labels carefully because not all post-emergents are alike.

Some are formulated for use on Bermuda, others for zoysia. And be sure to mix them exactly as the label instructs; too much of a good thing can be harmful to your lawn.

Proper mowing heights are important to help grass through the heat and possible drought of sum-

By Pamela A. Keene Aqualand’s Blue Ridge Houseboat Dock is back and open for business after its tangle last September with the remnants of Hurricane Irma.

“Previous slip-holders are being given the chance to get their original slips back before we open the space up to the public,” said Patrick Kenney, marina manager.

“The concrete dock has been rebuilt with a more rigid substructure, underwater bracing and new power pedestals at each slip.

It’s known for its beautiful views toward the Blue Ridge Mountains.”

The dock experienced damage when Hurricane Irma passed over Atlanta and Lake Lanier last fall. At that time, some of

the dock’s slip holders elected to move their boats to other marinas.

Repairs were completed by Browns Bridge Dock Company and former slip holders have the month of April to respond about whether they want their previous slip. “After that, we’ll open up the unleased slips to the public,” Kenney said.

“It’s a beautiful dock and a great location with stunning views.”

Condos on Lanier near Gainesville Marina closer to reality

By Pamela A. Keene The final step in approvals for two midrise condominium buildings off Ga. 53 on Lake Lanier takes place at the Gainesville City Council Meeting on April 17. The two six-story buildings are planned to offer 79 residential units, all three bedrooms and three baths. The development will offer ground-floor parking and an adjacent office building.

They are proposed to be built adjacent to Gainesville Marina. The project was heard and approved in mid-March by the Gainesville Zoning and Appeals board.

“These will be upscale condos, and we hope, if approved, to begin development in June 2019,” said Keith Brown with 53

Lake LLC. “We’ll be able to connect to Gainesville Marina along Dawsonville Highway with a safe path and pedestrian walkway/sidewalk.” The condos, each approximately 2,400 square feet, will feature two master suites with their own baths and a third bedroom and third bath. They will also have balconies. The exterior will be built in Craftsman style. “We’ll be situating the buildings to maximize lake views,” Brown said. “They’ll be perfect for empty nesters and people who want to have a second home on the lake. They’ll also be ideal as vacation rental properties.”

Skier’s Marine opens Lake Lanier location

By Pamela A. Keene Skier’s Marine has come to Lake Lanier. The 23-year-old marine company has opened its first Georgia store in Gainesville.

Headquartered in Alabama, Skier’s Marine also operates three dealership in Alabama and a fourth in Chattanooga.

“We are so excited about our new location at Lake Lanier,” says Heidi Moore, general manager of the 12,000-square-foot store that’s currently being remodeled at 1209 Hillside Gardens Lane off McEver Road. “It’s going to be a state-of-the-art fullservice dealership selling luxury Mastercraft boats and Smoker Craft’s SunChaser pontoons. We will also handle pre-owned boats and consignment sales.”

Skier’s Marine opened in a temporary space late in 2017 and participated in the 2018 Atlanta Boat Show. The company closed on the McEver Road property in early March and has already begun its operations there. The space features a two-story showroom and a full service department.

Moore has worked in the marine business in Gwinnett and Hall counties for nearly 20 years.

Many customers know her from

her days at West Marine. She also worked for 11 years at Atlanta Marine where she worked in parts then ran the service department for four years. She was also brand manager for Supra at Atlanta Marine.

“My niche is inboard boats and water sports,” she said.

“Looking back, it’s amazing that God has put me in every sector of the marine business to prepare me to fun a dealership. Now I’m ready to put it all together.”

Moore said that she is excited that the company has opened a location in Georgia and that she will be one of the few female general managers in the marine business locally.

The company is owned by Rett Tyler and his two sons Chad and Ryan. In 1995 Tyler, a former policeman, began selling boats as a sideline on a vacant lot on Highway 280 in Alabama before turning to the business full time.

Today, the company has five dealerships and has been recognized multiple times as one of the Top 100 dealerships in the country by Boating Industry Magazine and the National Marine Manufacturers Association. That ranking is based on, among other things, customer service ratings.

“Our customers understand that we’re remodeling the store and they’re excited about coming in to see us already,” Moore said.

Getting close to God and nature with lake church services April 2018

By Pamela A. Keene Did you know that on any Sunday you can attend a Christian church service on Lake Lanier?

While some lake services only take place on Sundays from May through Labor Day, Gainesville Marina’s Pavilion is home to year-round services every Sunday.

“If it’s cold or rainy we can enclose the pavilion,” said John Simpson, who often preaches at the services. His home church, Lanier Christian Church, is pastored by his father David Simpson. “We’re there every Sunday for our 10 a.m. lake service, whether there are just a few people or 400, like we traditionally have at our Easter Sunrise Service. Typically, we have between 50 and 60 people in the warmer months.”

Lanier Christian Church manages the lake services that are open to all denominations. “Visitors are always welcome and especially in the summer people from outside of the area attend.

We’ve had people come from all over, including Atlanta, who are looking for a church service while they’re spending the weekend at the lake. Instead of going home on Saturday nights or early Sun-

day morning to attend their home church, they celebrate and worship with us.” People can come by car or boat. Dress is casual.

“Wear your shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops,” Simpson said. “Everyone is welcome. We always have coffee, and in the summer we also have lemonade.”

Pastor David Simpson preaches many of the Sunday lake services. Pastoral needs of those who attend the lake service, whether members of Lanier Christian Church or not, are served by Simpson. The church offers two services at its main location, 22356 Dawsonville Highway, Gainesville. It’s just down the road from Gainesville Marina.

Bible studies, children, youth and teen programs, as well as community outreach, are coordinated through the church.

“We hope people will join us on Sundays when they’re at the lake,” Simpson said. “And if they’d like to join our church, they will certainly be welcomed.”

On the south side of the lake, Holiday Chapel at Holiday Ma-

rina has been hosting church services every summer Sunday since 1965. “We’re an interdenominational chapel where everyone is welcome,” said Diane Fox, who with her husband Dennis and four other couples volunteer to manage the logistics of the weekly summer morning services.

“Member of our group, Friends of Holiday Lanier Chapel, has been volunteering for more than five decades to provide church services for people at the lake.”

The ministry began as an outgrowth of First United Methodist Church of Buford. Details of those early days are part of “Historic Buford,” authored by Handsel Grady Morgan. “People would gather at the top of the hill at Holiday Marina back then, before the pavilion was built, and they’re still coming to services on Sundays from the first Sunday in May through the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend,” she said. “The men of Buford First United Methodist built the pavilion and it has been a win-win so that people away from their home churches or who want to can attend.”

“And on the Sunday before Labor Day, we always host a pot-luck and people bring food to share.

It’s a warm and welcoming fellowship.”

Pastoral needs are served by First United Methodist Church in Buford. Fox said that the chapel is involved in the community and has annually provided a scholarship for a ministerial student every year since 1965. The group also supports several charities in

Buford and Gainesville when they have extra funds.

While preachers and some musicians are paid, everyone else is a volunteer. The group is independently funded and relies on plate offerings to pay for operational costs. “But we do accept donations, like the keyboard that someone from the docks at Holiday gave us several years ago.”

She said the group is looking for a sound system to allow them to play recorded music. And they’re always looking for more volunteers.

By Pamela A. Keene As a fireman in Hall County, Steve Durling has seen the effects of tragedy. Some people would just consider it part of their job, but Durling uses it as the impetus to help others beyond his regular work week.

He has made it his work to support Fallen Heroes of Georgia, and the group is hosting two events this spring – Fallen Heroes of Georgia 5K at Lanier Islands on April 14, and a golf tournament at Monroe’s Providence Country Club on May 21.

“My father and grandfathers were in the military and I’ve realized that today people don’t typically do as much as they can to honor and respect the soldiers who fight for us and our freedom,” said Durling, who became a firefighter in 2001 before 9-11.

“Yes, as firefighters we do put ourselves in harm’s way, but the people in the military do so much more because they take the fight to the bad guys. It’s been a hard war to fight, this war on terrorism.”

Durling began volunteering to

work with several military-related groups. By 2008, Durling realized that he wanted to do even more, so he founded the Fallen Heroes of Georgia 5K. The group’s first race was held in 2009 with more than 1,000 runners. Attendance has steadily grown since then to between 1,400 and 1,600 runners.

“We want even more participants this year,” Durling said.

“We’d really like to have 2,000 this year, and the first 2,000 to register will each receive a Fallen Heroes of Georgia Finishers Medal.”

The group also hosts an annual golf tournament at Monroe’s Providence Country Club. Registration is open for this year’s May 21 event. Fallen Heroes supports various charities that benefit soldiers and their families. Among other things, Fallen Heroes provides educational grants and scholarships.

About five years ago, Durling met a couple from Flowery Branch who had lost their Marine son in Iraq in January 2005.

“People come by boat or car, and we have an average of 250 people each Sunday, depending, of course, on the weather,” said Charles Meagher, who serves on the Bald Ridge Chapel board of trustees. “Our services are open to all. Our services are nofrill; come casual.”

The chapel has a long-standing relationship with Cumming First United Methodist Church, but it has operated independently as a non-denominational service at the marina since 1964. Church members built the chapel on land provided

by Bald Ridge Marina as a community outreach. In fact, Meagher said that he became familiar with Cumming First United Methodist Church through his attendance at Bald Ridge Chapel in the mid 1980s. “I became a member of Cumming First

Located just 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, the lake offers some of the finest camping opportunities in the South. The Corps operates 7 campgrounds at Lake Lanier. Camping enthusiasts may enjoy the luxuries of fully developed areas with water and electrical hookups or “rough it” at designated primitive areas. Most campgrounds have park attendants on duty to assist our visitors. Camping in undesignated areas such as on the lake’s shoreline and islands is prohibited.

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

Day Use Fees Day use fees are charged at some park areas which have boat ramps or beach areas. It would be difficult to locate any place on the globe where the experiences of meeting and interacting with the people would stand alone as a good reason to visit, but Newfoundland is just such a place. In a time when many people think only of themselves, it is so different to discover a people who are genuine, uncomplicated, creative, honest, spontaneous, and fun-loving to the bone! They never forget the really important things in life … family, good friends, and good times.

Beyond the wonderful populace and countryside that has changed little in more than a hundred years, the raw, natural beauty of Newfoundland is simply breathtaking… especially during the winter and early spring! Beneath the untouched blanket of snow lies a geological tapestry that would rival any other region in the world.

Throughout the globe, the Gros Morne area is highly regarded for its complex geology and stunning scenery. It was here that geologists proved the theory of plate tectonics. The Tablelands, a mountain of flat-topped rock of a kind usually found only deep in the earth’s mantle, is an awe inspiring sight. Most of this area of Newfoundland is part of an ancient seafloor and preserved ocean avalanches that were exposed by the collision of the Earth’s tectonic plates 500 million years ago. Gros Morne National Park offers this unique geological history and during the winter, the snow and ice produces a winter wonderland.

The absolute best way to see and experience Newfoundland in winter is on snowshoes. Step out into the freshness of the clean, snow-covered world of Newfoundland and learn to love the very distinct sound of snow crunching underfoot as it echoes through the quiet evergreen trees.

The more adventuresome can climb the sloping heights of a mountain ridge in Gros Morne while floating above the ground on a pristine blanket of snow and ice. One can traverse entire lakes and ponds that are below the snow, and take photographs that will be cherished forever.

Most trips into this part of Newfoundland begin with a flight into Deer Lake, which is a thriving little community in the heart of the best skiing and snowmobiling areas. Once reaching the sleepy little village of Rocky Harbour, which is very close to Gros Morne National Park, individuals or families should experience the traditional food and hospitality of a real Newfoundland family.
