By Pamela A. Keene Picture this: a half-dozen skiboats leaving Buford Dam on Halloween morning, towing water-skiers all the way up to Gainesville Marina. What’s missing? The skiers aren’t wearing skis.

“We’re barefoot skiing all the way in a long-line barefoot event like the ones that used to take place on Lanier more than 20 years ago,” said Jeff Harwood, who’s organizing the event.

“Some of the top skiers in the world will be here as we take on Lake Lanier, including world champion New Zealander Ben Groen.”

The 18-mile run on Saturday, October 31, will start at 8 a.m.

Each boat will tow a barefoot skier until he drops off, then the boat circles around to pick him up, drops in another skier and the barefoot run continues.

“The toughest part for us – and for anyone who wants to waterski on Lanier – is finding clean water, without a lot of wake or traffic,” Harwood said. “We’re starting early enough to avoid traffic and anticipate doing the run at about 40 or 45 miles per hour. It shouldn’t really take us

too long.”

The idea to revive the Barefoot Long-Line Endurance Run came about a couple of years ago, when several die-hard water-skiers on Lanier began chatting.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time,” Harwood said. “David Woodall had told me about the earlier barefoot longline events on Lanier when he started teaching me to barefoot about 20 years ago, and we all thought, ‘why not do this again?’ ” Harwood began waterskiing as a 2-year-old in Lakeland, Florida.

“We always went to Cypress Gardens to see the waterski show back then,” he said. “It was filled with tricks like barefoot skiing, ski kites, three-level skiing pyramids and all kinds of tricks. It really got me excited, and as I grew up, I started doing every kind of ski trick I could do.”

Harwood moved to Lanier 20 years ago and began skiing with people like Chris Wakefield and Woodall, who taught him to barefoot.

“We used to go up into narrow areas of the lake and ski, sometimes only about 30 feet off of docks,” he said. “When I first

started I was black and blue for days, but it was the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

These days, most skiers travel to smaller lakes with less boat

traffic to hone their skills and fine-tune their tricks.

Boat Parade draws nearly 3,500 boats Labor Day Sunday

By Pamela A. Keene People who viewed Lake Lanier’s Great American Boat Parade on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend said they were amazed to see boats stretching from Buford Dam all the way up the lake past Big Creek.

All totaled, the parade drew an estimated 3,500 boats, many decorated with patriotic emblems, American flags and political messages.

Organizers projected that they raised between $12,000 and $15,000, but donations are still coming in and officials haven't completely netted out costs and expenses. The final amount will

be donated to its named charity, Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation, which benefits families affected by 9-11 and veterans.

“We were floored by the turnout,” said John Gunter, organizer of the event. “The day before the event, we had about 1,100 registered and paid, but by the time we started marshaling boats at the dam, we more than doubled that number.”

Gunter said that veterans and first responders paraded at no charge, and some people just heard about the parade and showed up at the dam. “Our plan was to go up the east side of the lake then cross south of Port Flags of all types were prevalent during the parade.

Royale and back down the west side. But once we realized how many boats there were, we knew we couldn’t do a circle.”

Most of the boats were cruisers, wake boats and pontoons. He said that several off-shore powerboats showed up, but that because the parade proceeded at no more than 4 miles per hour, those boats dropped out early on.

“It’s really hard to run a highspeed boat that slow, and not that many off-shore powerboats showed up,” he said. Gunter’s houseboat was the lead vessel, setting the pace for the event.

The event may serve as the catalyst for future fund-raising boat parades, he said.

and Lanier Islands about a big charity event for next year,” Gunter said. “It might include an in-the-water-boat show and some kind of activity to raise money, and other components.

No decision yet on water lawsuit

By Jane Harrison The U.S. Supreme Court in mid-September had not granted Florida another chance to stake its claims on water from the river system that fills Lake Lanier, serves metro Atlanta, and irrigates Georgia crops.

By Lakeside News deadline, the longstanding Florida v. Georgia lawsuit over water on the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river network was not listed for oral argument this year. The October 2020 calendar extends through April 2021. Justices planned to sit through another marathon water contest, Texas v.

New Mexico, on Oct. 5.

Florida filed suit in October 2013, claiming Georgia consumed more than its share of water, causing the collapse of oyster fisheries in Apalachicola Bay. Subsequently, two court-appointed special masters recommended the court drop the case.

In a 5-4 2018 decision, justices remanded the first special master’s report and later assigned the case to another, who in January this year also denied Florida’s claims.

Since then, both states have volleyed replies and sur-replies, met so far with no recorded response from justices. Florida attorneys have pled for court

sympathy for Apalachicola’s oystering tradition, which they claim will be doomed without the court’s intervention. Georgia attorneys have pointed to evidence of Florida’s overharvest of oysters and the Peach State’s larger economy that quenches its thirst from the ACF. Metro Atlanta water users and stakeholders around Lake Lanier initially feared Florida’s lawsuit would target the ACF’s largest reservoir; however, lawyers focused on south Georgia farmers on the Flint River. Georgia agriculture saps more water from the ACF than all other entities combined.

Peyton’s Pie Company opens in Flowery Branch

By Pamela A. Keene Traditional wood-fired pizza has come to downtown Flowery Branch. Nick and Alison St. Clair opened Peyton’s Pie Company in mid-September across from their Antebellum. It’s open six days a week. “This has been a dream of ours for several years,” said St. Clair. “The plan, even back then, was to open Peyton’s Pie Company, named for our oldest son, in downtown Flowery Branch someday.”

St. Clair perfected his crust recipe by experimenting with various types of specially milled flour from Italy. It’s handkneaded and allowed to rest for 36 hours before it’s ready to bake.

“Pies are topped with fresh house-made ingredients and our own sauce recipe,” St. Clair said.

“We’ve created about a halfdozen combinations, or guests can build their own pizzas.”

The menu includes soups, salads and wings, plus home-made chicken pot pie and sandwiches.

Girl Scouts create campaign, Local Boy Scout earns Eagle rank with Lanier project

By Pamela A. Keene The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t deter Girl Scout Troop 15514 in Forsyth County from its mission to support clear water in Lake Lanier. In fact, their dedication earned the 8member troop a Silver Award from Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and are raising awareness about the importance of clean water. They selected the Lake Lanier Association to promote with their project “Keep Lanier Clear.”

“The girls also brought all their skills to the table, from research to coding,” said troop adviser Andrea McNeil-Brown.

“They did all the work themselves with very little adult guidance. They reached out to the Lake Lanier Association because that’s the group they chose to highlight.”

Nearly a year ago, members of the troop began their journey, researching the importance of water quality. “The lake kept coming up as one of the top issues, so they wanted to contribute to a group that works with lake issues,” McNeilBrown said. “Once we contacted Jennifer Flowers at the association, we were well on our way. She was amazing in providing insight and guidance about issues important to Lake Lanier.”

Leonard sought out a service project for his Eagle Scout designation, he turned to Lake Lanier.

He’s a member of Troop 514 that’s based at Fairview Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville when not conducting its meetings virtually.

“My scout leader Ed Fleeson suggested doing something with the Corps of Engineers that would help the public and promote safety; the idea really intrigued me,” said Leonard, a senior at Chamblee Charter High School.

“Through my research, I found out that the Corps has 11 parks on Lanier with life-jacket loaner stations with a total of 14 stations.

With more than 23,000 visitors each year, Buford Dam Park is the most visited park around the lake. It made perfect sense.”

Leonard connected with Friends of Lake Lanier, a volunteer group that works with the Corps of Engineers to accomplish projects that are part of the Corps’ mission but outside the scope of the budget.

the board of the Friends group.

We talked about what was needed and how important it was to ensure that people who come to the lake have access to life jackets.

He immediately undertook the project – designing and building two new life-jacket loaner stations – and saw it through.” The two wooden structures are brandnew and include roofs to protect the life jackets from the weather and extend their life. Signage in both Spanish and English has been added. They were dedicated in late September and will be in use during the season, which runs from April to September.

Leonard joined scouting in the

first grade as a Tiger Scout.

“From the very beginning, my goal was to earn the Eagle rank,” he said. “I’ve always dreamed of becoming an Eagle Scout, and now it’s a reality. It has been a lot of hard work, but it also has been very rewarding.”

After graduation he plans to attend college to pursue a degree in computer engineering.

By Jane Harrison New Lake Lanier Rowing Club coach Howell Buot brings a rare combination of youth, experience, and versatility to the Olympic legacy rowing program that originated before he was born. At age 23, Buot has taken oars for two college crews, taught novice and masters rowers, and energized metro-Atlanta clubs before landing at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. He began coaching for LLRC over the summer, relieving interim Coach John Ferriss.

At a recent practice with new adult rowers many years his senior, the young coach led with authority, drilling them on posture, clapping out rhythm, and pointing out little flaws in form. He led the crew out of the boathouse workout onto the water, boarded the coach’s launch, and talked through a megaphone to amplify his instructions. Rowers complied eagerly, performing out-and-back repetitions on a rainy morning.

Noting a stop and chat moment in one four-boat, Buot reflected on rowers’ general aspect.

“Rowers have an A-type personality, very strong and independent. But it is a true team sport, everyone has to be at the same level,” he said. “Compromise is necessary to fit in the context of a crew.” He waited while the fourboat figured it out.

Young rowers also must “learn to jibe,” he said. “They have to understand how to manage personality, to have empathy.” With all regattas canceled this season, he plans to stage ergattas (competitions on stationary rowing machines) and time trials to create a competitive spirit and test individual strengths.

Buot grew up in Atlanta, where he shunned sports and picked up guitar instead. Upon entering Georgia State University to major in music, he checked an intramural sports and recreation website and saw “crew” listed first. He chose it by chance as his inaugural sport. Although his dad had rowed for the University of Virginia, Buot never felt an inclination to row until then.

“I was not in shape,” he said.

At 215 pounds, he put extra weight on board. But a semester of getting up at 5 a.m. for weekday team practices on the Chattahoochee River helped make an

athlete of him. Team workouts burning as much as 1,600 calories and smart nutrition melted off 60 pounds. “Gaining more knowledge, being surrounded by healthy people, and eating better” in college rowing changed his perspective.

Buot transferred to the University of Georgia his sophomore year, where he rowed in top 8 boats for the Bulldogs. While completing his music education degree and rowing for UGA, he drove back to Atlanta to coach high school rowers. Eventually, he would coach crew for the Westminister Schools, Peachtree City, and the Atlanta Rowing Club, helping with camps, learnto-row, youth and masters programs.

He was finishing a teaching stint at Cambridge High School in Milton when he found out LLRC was looking for a youth coach. At Cambridge, he had cultivated the club crew from seven to 70 members. LLRC officials recognized his potential and invited him to help with summer camps. Buot went all in, assisting with learn to row, junior crew, and the fairly new program to take learn-to-row masters participants to the next level.

His off-the-water career also moved to Gainesville, where he now teaches in the English department at Riverside Military Academy. Typically, he rises early for his own rowing workouts at LLOP before heading to class. He leaves school around 4 p.m. to coach junior rowers on weekdays and heads back to the boathouse for masters’ training on Saturday mornings. Although the schedule hardly allows him time to breathe, he energetically shoulders the load. “It’s my responsibility,” he said.

He currently resides with long time LLRC members, shortening the drive from his Dunwoody address.

He relishes the Gainesville community’s support. “The city has been so nice,” he said of Gainesville tourism director and LLOP executive director Robyn Lynch, LLOP manager James Watson, and LLRC members.

“They all say, ‘We’re so glad to have you.’ ” “We are excited to welcome him to Gainesville and the Lake Lanier Rowing Club family,” said LLRC President Cliff Ward in a statement. “His past experience as a collegiate rower, previous coaching experience, along with his degree from the University of Georgia in the education field made him an ideal rowing coach for the club. He will focus on both the Junior’s program (middle and high school) and coaching novice rowers of all ages. Howell was excited for the opportunity to coach rowing at Lake Lanier and we feel fortunate to have a young coach that connects with both Junior and Master level rowers.”

Buot said he wants to take the LLRC program to its potential.

“There’s no reason why this isn’t the premiere club of the South,” he said. “It’s got the best facility, the best water, the best climate and the best history.”

Senior LLRC member George Ordway, who accompanies Buot on the coach’s launch on Saturday morning practices, said long term members sometimes “lose sight of the fact that this is a legacy location,” the site of 1996 Olympic rowing competition.

Buot added, “I wasn’t even alive during the (1996) Olympics.” Now he’s coaching for the club that helped bring the Games to Lake Lanier.

Anyway, she came from “old money.” One of her cousins up on Cape Cod was having a party and she wanted to go. Her father had “absolutely forbidden” her to ride on a motorcycle so naturally she hopped on the back of my motorcycle and we headed north from New Jersey.

Visitation up, Lanier’s resources challenged by vandalism/nature

By Pamela A. Keene It’s a good news, bad news situation for Lake Lanier. While visitation, even in the time of COVID-19, is up at least 30 percent over last year, vandalism has also increased. Add the strong winds and destructive storm that hit the south end of the lake in August, and the public is having to make do with less.

Tim Rainey, US Army Corps of Engineer’s operations project manager at Lake Lanier, said that visitation this year has greatly increased, as people look for ways to get outdoors during the pandemic. “I’d say visitation is up at least 30 percent, and that’s a very low estimate.

“Because of budget constraints, we’ve not been able to address storm damage, or the upsurge in park vandalism,” Rainey said. “We are close to awarding a contract to clean up and make storm-damage repairs from the August storm.

But to add to the demands on the budget, on Labor Day Weekend vandals destroyed both the men’s and women’s bathrooms at Van Pugh Park. It’s just senseless for people to tear up public property, especially when it takes away resources that so many peo-

ple have been using when they come to the lake.”

The damage to Van Pugh Park, which is temporarily closed because of the August storm, was deliberate and extensive. Vandals tore up the metal door and door frames to the bathrooms, ripped the tile off and punched holes in the walls, broke sinks, ripped off toilet-paper holders and soap dispensers and have made the facilities unusable for the foreseeable future.

“The contract for the storm clean-up and repairs will be awarded soon, but that money is earmarked for storm-damage only,” he said.

“However, with this type of vandalism, we simply do not have any money left in our nonroutine maintenance funding this fiscal year to make these repairs,” Rainey said. “We’re at the end of our fiscal year, and we’ve already used our non-routine maintenance money. It will be at least the middle of December before more funds are available, and then we will need to prioritize what it’s spent on.

“We can hope to have the restrooms back and operational by next spring in Van Pugh,” he said.

“If not, we may have to open the

park without these facilities.”

In addition to storm damage and excessively high-water levels so far in 2020, the Corps has been faced with an inordinate amount of additional maintenance costs.

For instance, leadership made the decision last spring to close Old Federal Park Campgrounds because of erosion caused by high water levels. Water had washed behind the rock bulkheads and caused washouts in the park, making it unsafe for the public.

When acts of vandalism occur, it compounds the demands on federal funding.

“This case of vandalism is not rare here at the lake,” Rainey said. “You’d be surprised at the number of times people have come into the parks with destructive behavior. Then it’s up to us as the Corps to come up with the funding to make repairs. Add that to the normal wear-and-tear of our facilities, especially in a year when visitation has increased so much, and it’s not good news.

The public relies on these facilities for their enjoyment of Lake Lanier, its parks and its resources.

To me, it’s just a senseless waste of resources and very unfortunate that someone would feel the need to do this kind of damage.”

The headline contains similar sounding words if you say them fast enough. But with one extra letter, and the space in between, that changes everything.

So how are these terms related to boating safety? Each and every watercraft operator, crewmember, and even passengers need to recognize the significant difference between these two interpretations.

“Beware” means to be careful, take heed, and watch out, which are all part of boating safety and primarily used in expectation to a possible dangerous situation.

“Be Aware” takes the lead in every sense of the word and meaning. It refers to assessing risk, predicting plausible outcomes, and taking corrective steps to prevent a “bad situation” in the first place. Lake Lanier boating groups give back

Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special.

By Pamela A. Keene hen most people think about boating clubs, they think about on-the-water and social activities, but several clubs on Lake Lanier spend much of their time going beyond the call.

The UYC Maritime Foundation, University Yacht Club and America’s Boating Club Atlanta, formerly the Atlanta Sail and Power Squadron, quietly work behind the scenes all year. From preparing and serving meals at Atlanta’s Ronald McDonald House to supporting the new Marine Technology program at Lanier Technical College, members of these groups dig in to give back.

UYC Maritime Foundation Created nearly 20 years ago, the UYC Maritime Foundation depends on donations from the community for its programs, many of which are related to connecting boating to learning life skills and instilling leadership for boaters.

“From our inception a big part of mission is supporting maritime education and safety,” said Wayne Flanagan, chair of the UYC Maritime Foundation, created more than 15 years ago. “Over the years, we have provided scholarships for high school students, supported the University Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program and offered opportunities for leadership training through our activities. As members of the Lake Lanier community, we strive to help make boating relevant off the water as well as on.”

Although it’s based at University Yacht Club, its work goes be-

yond the club’s campus off Gaines Ferry Road in Flowery Branch. As an independent 501 (c) 3, it is a non-profit group and donations to it are tax deductible.

Participation in its programs is not limited to members of University Yacht Club.

Before the foundation was created, University Yacht Club organized and hosted the Lake Lanier Christmas Boat Parade, open to the community. To be able to raise money for charities, the foundation took over organization of the event around 2005.

Other University Yacht Club programs soon became the responsibility of the foundation.

February’s Hot Ruddered Bum sailboat race officially begins the lake’s sailing season. November’s Lanier Cup Regatta, pits each sailing club’s top boats against each other to crown the champion boat and crew for the season.

One of its major initiatives, the two week-long Junior Sailing program teaches youngsters ages 6 to 16 how to sail, team-building, leadership development and sportsmanship. The foundation has funded the program’s equipment, including several BIC O’Pen sailing dinghies. It is building its fleet and recently received donations of a Catalina 22 and a Rhodes 19.

The foundation works in partnership with members of University Yacht Club each summer to host staff and participants in organizations that help people with developmental disabilities. “Some of them have never even been to the lake before, much less ridden on a boat; others look forward to this event all year long,” Flana-

gan said. “They come out for boat rides and a cookout, spending an afternoon with us. It’s one of our biggest activities and we always have a great turnout.”

Education drives the foundation’s work. From awarding scholarships to graduates of Flowery Branch and West Hall High School to consulting with and providing funding to the new Marine Engine Technology training at Lanier Tech, it is furthering advanced and technical instruction.

“This year, we interviewed 15 applicants and awarded five scholarships to graduating seniors,” said Liz Rogers, who spearheads the initiative. “For us to give back to the community in this way and help deserving students with their education is rewarding, especially when we see the caliber of the students out there.”

Since 2011, the foundation has awarded more than 50 scholarships.

The Lanier Tech Marine Technology program opened earlier this year. Members of the UYC Maritime Foundation were tapped during planning stages to consult and provide support. The foundation also provides financial assistance to students. This fall, 16 students are enrolled in classes.

“The goal is to train muchneeded marine mechanics and fill the pipeline, not only in Georgia but eventually across the Southeast,” said David Erickson, foundation board member. “Until now, there’s not been an accessible training program, and there’s a serious shortage of marine mechanics. By working with Lanier Tech, we hope that more mechanics will be trained to reduce this shortage and help keep all of us on the water.”

University Yacht Club This 250-member club actively supports Eagle Ranch, a residential program in Flowery Branch that helps boys and girls stay connected with their families while working to improve their relationships.

“With the important work Eagle Ranch is doing, right here in our own back yard, we are long been committed to championing their mission,” said Lisa Herndon Wilson, commodore of University Yacht Club. “Our members help provide financial support, particularly since it receives no government funding. It relies on community support, which we are

happy to supplement. And Eagle Ranch founder Eddie Staub frequently makes presentations to our members, updating them on the work of this amazing organization.”

The club’s Bulloch Chapel offers worship services every Sunday from May through the first weekend in October at 10:30 a.m.

The outdoor chapel, nestled beneath tall hardwoods and pines, has been the site of weddings and memorial services as well. A monthly service through the winter begins at 11 a.m. in the club’s Carswell Pavilion.

“Anyone is welcome to come worship with us,” said Betsy Wolf, co-chair of the chapel committee. “We also support Eagle Ranch through our weekly offerings. Our volunteer chaplains can provide spiritual counseling as well.”

America’s Boating Club Atlanta From giving of their time at the Ronald McDonald House in Atlanta to helping out with the Calvary Children’s Home on Peachtree-Dunwoody, members of America’s Boating Club Atlanta have found that their volunteer work builds strong bonds.

“You can really get to know other people when you work sideby-side with them as volunteers,” said Tim Tyson, long-time member of ABCA, who chairs the

group’s community service. “It’s been amazing to see how just a couple of hours helping prepare meals for RMH can make a difference, not just for the families who stay there while a child is receiving medical treatment, but for us as we give of our time.”

Members volunteer at Calvary Children’s Home take youngsters on boat rides each summer in a planned event. Club members send hand-made birthday cards to the residents and provide them with a bit of spending money to celebrate.

ABCA members volunteer for Shore Sweep and other waterway clean-ups with Georgia Rivers Alive and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. They teach safety classes for other boating groups and have built relationships with marinas and boat dealers around the lake.

“America’s Boating Club Atlanta’s chief missions are education and boating safety,” said Dave Fuller, commander of the 225-member organization. “But any of our members will tell you that beyond education and boating we are committed to giving back, whether we’re on the water or volunteering. Many of our members have business backgrounds. We all know that it’s important to share resources and pay it forward, no matter what brings your group together.”

The twinge of cool temps are upon us October is one of my favorite months. The long and hot days of summer are coming to an end and we will soon feel that first little twinge of cold, reminding us winter is coming.

Speaking of cold, the average date for our first freezing temperatures is November 16th.

However, back on October 11th in 1906, a major blast of cold air barreled out of Canada and poured into the Southeast. It is the earliest we’ve ever seen a 32 degree temperature in Atlanta.

This is also the month where the leaves turn. As you well know, we’ve had a lot of rain this summer. As of this writing, we have a near 14-inch rainfall surplus for the year! That’s great for the lakes. It’s also good news and bad news for our fall color.

Let’s get the bad news over with. When we have had rain like we’ve seen this summer and fall, it tends to make the fall color a little “muddied” for lack of a better word. The color is OK but not great. During dry years our fall color tends to be spectacular with brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows. So, the bad news is the fall color will not be very brilliant for the most part. By now, your asking what the “good” news is.

The good news is the abundant rainfall

will give us a longerlasting fall color. While dry conditions bring Glenn more vivid color, it does Burns not last long. Rainy weather allows the leaves to remain on the Lanier trees longer, so we get Outlook to enjoy the fall color, as muted as it may be, for a much longer period of time.

La Nina continues to be 60 percent likely this winter. I am continuing to watch the colder sea surface temperatures build along the equatorial Pacific Ocean just off the west coast of South America. This disrupts the global wind patterns in such a way as to bring us warmer than average temperatures for the winter. It also has a tendency to bring us drier than average conditions for the winter. It could still snow in our area, but the odds are against it.

As far as the temperatures go the daily high temperatures decrease by 9 degrees, from 77 to 68, rarely falling below 57 or exceeding 84. Daily low temperatures decrease by 11 degrees, from 59 on October 1st to 48 by the 31st, rarely falling below 37 or exceeding 6.

Autumn leaves can be a gardener’s best friend Wait! Don’t rake up and toss those leaves. You may be wasting good resources for your garden and for wildlife.

Instead, rake and bag them because they make great mulch to protect your plants from winter freezes. They’re also a great addition to you compost heap.

And if you don’t want to rake them at all, the National Audubon Society recommends leaving at least some of them on the ground.

The birds will appreciate them as a source of shelter and even food.

For the birds Trimming back your perennials, such as cone flowers, blackeyed Susans and other seed-bearing blossoms, will deprive birds from a natural food source. They’ll feed on the seeds, even if they’re so small you can’t really see them.

Other plants, such as pampas grass and muhly grass with their tall feather-like blooms, provide a veritable picnic for birds as the weather turns cold. No need to trim them back until late winter.

Leaving some leaves on your lawn also gives the birds a place to shelter. They can nestle under them, and along with the heat

Consider building a lose brush pile of leaves and trimmings from plants to create protection from predators for your birds. With bare trees in winter, they have fewer places to hide. For your garden Fall’s a good time to start composting, especially with the large amount of leaves in your yard.

Rake them and pile them, alternating with non-meat kitchen scraps and grass clippings, to get a head start on making rich soil to use in spring plantings.

You can also collect leaves using your lawn mower set on “shred” or mulch, then bag them.

Use them to protect tender plants and those that go dormant, such as hostas, elephant ears, caladiums, half-hardy and perennial salvia and dahlias. Pile them on lightly to a thickness of about three inches and they’ll help hold in the ground’s heat. Brush them aside when the weather warms back up and you’ll be adding nutrients to the soil as the leaves decompose next year.

Limited outdoor celebrations still scheduled for fall

By Jane Harrison A strange wet summer dissolved into autumn as coronavirus concerns closed down most fall festivals around Lake Lanier and its mountain headwaters. However, folks looking for a chance to celebrate the changing of the season still have options to socialize in a few outdoor gatherings around the lake. Here’s a brief look:

• Wine in the Woodlands, 5-8 p.m. Fri. & Sat. through Nov. 1, Gainesville Garden of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Attendees can sip wine, beer or soda in this evening soiree amongst fall blooms and whimsical scarecrows. The event offered every Friday and Saturday this month gives visitors opportunity to see hay-stuffed creations presented by local organizations in the annual Scare-

crows in the Garden contest. Guests can also pre-order meals from Gainesville’s 2Dog Restaurant and dine al fresco in the Ivester Amphitheatre or event lawn. The menu lists charcuterie and humus platters, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. Guests are welcome to bring chairs and/or blankets for seating. Located just 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, the lake offers some of the finest camping opportunities in the South. The Corps operates 7 campgrounds at Lake Lanier. Camping enthusiasts may enjoy the luxuries of fully developed areas with water and electrical hookups or “rough it” at designated primitive areas. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds.

All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m.

Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks.

Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531.

Hall County’s Cloudland Vineyards and Winery opens this month A vineyard and winery in south Hall County is exciting news for casual connoisseurs like myself looking for locally made fine wine. Upon visiting Sean Wilborn, I learned a few interesting things about this South Hall Terroir. Terroir, a French term, is defined as the complete natural environment in which a wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.

Even though I grew up in Georgia and boating on Lake Lanier, I didn’t know the Eastern Continental Divide runs through Hall County. Sean’s vineyard, Cloudland Vineyards and Winery, lies right in the middle of that Divide. Rain falling on one side eventually makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean, while rain on the other side of his property ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. The Divide is the first ridge rising from the Piedmont Plateau. In order to pass the “Sean Test” to grow good grapes, the land needs good air circulation. There is a constant breeze at Cloudland. Second on Sean’s list is good drainage, and Cloudland checks that box as well. Third, the property needs to get plenty of sun exposure, and

Instead of spraying the vines and grapes with insecticides and herbicides, he uses bee nets to keep insects and birds away from the grapes.

Pierce’s Disease tolerant red wine grape that was developed by Thomas Volney Munson in 1902.

The rich flavor comes from the marriage of the Malaga and Salado grapes. In addition to being disease resistant the grape also has high-quality potential. Wine made from these grapes has a wonderful fruit fragrance as you smell the wine before tasting. If you are pairing with food, Lomanto is a perfect match for tomato-based pasta such as lasagna as it is fruit forward with moderate tannins.

Also consider enjoying the

wine paired with a steak topped with blue cheese, barbecued pork, grilled vegetables, or your favorite salsa. Wine made from the Lomanto grape is one of the prettiest, deepest purple of wines I have ever seen. Some describe the wine as moderately bold, rich, and juicy with a smooth finish.

The 2018 and 2019 vintages are aged in French oak, while the 2020 vintage will be aged in Georgia oak.

Costa Rican beauty revisited during coronavirus times As a travel writer and photographer, this coronavirus has made my world shrink dramatically into the realm of my computer. Therefore, I find myself looking back through photos and remembering unforgettable places and times from the recent past.

Probably the most vivid of these was nearly two years ago when I spent a glorious week in the rainforests of Costa Rica at the Rio Parismina Lodge: www.riop.com. On my return, I shared my experience in words and pictures on a smaller scale in Lakeside, but after reviewing the photos again … I would like to share less writing and more visual.

Annual Sweep the Hooch volunteers net huge returns

By Pamela A. Keene The 10th annual Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s Sweep the Hooch event drew more than 1,000 volunteers from across the river’s watershed in late August and netted almost as much trash and debris as in 2019.

“Our volunteers worked extremely hard and did a fabulous job of cleaning up the parts of Chattahoochee’s watershed,” said Mallory Pendleton, headwaters outreach manager. “It was an extremely hot day, but that didn’t

stop people from coming out to help.”

The day included work at 43 trails, parks and creeks, collecting nearly 40 tons of trash, debris and items such as tires. Nearly 10 tons was able to be recycled.

Next year’s Sweep the Hooch event is set for Saturday, March 27.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is an environmental advocacy organization dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin. The river

flows 430 miles from its headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mountains to its confluence with the Flint River at Lake Seminole and the Florida border.

Memberships begin at $35 per person.
