A graduate of Langston University and a Tulsa native, Young founded MahoganyBooks with her husband, Derrick. MahoganyBooks is a nationally recognized and award-winning independent bookstore. It’s the premier destination for books written for, by and about people of African descent with physical locations in the historic Anacostia community of Washington, D.C., the National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and most recently, a footprint at National Airport.
At the helm of strategic partnerships,Young is instrumental in building the MahoganyBooks brand and deepening relationships with local and national authors, celebrity writers, corporations and community groups. She is passionate about amplifying Black voices and fostering a love of reading and cultural awareness. As a business leader, Young has grown MahoganyBooks into an essential space for dialogue, education and activism while creating intentional spaces for authors and readers to connect deeply with Black literature.
In addition to her work at MahoganyBooks,Young is a sought-after speaker on entrepreneurship, leadership and community engagement. Her dedication to service extends to empowering women and entrepreneurs through mentoring and advocacy. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the DC Public Library Foundation, is an appointed commissioner for the Prince William County Human Rights Commission, and a 2024 Books Across Borders Fellow.
One of Young’s proudest moments was becoming a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She is also an active alumna of her beloved HBCU, Langston University. Known for her astute leadership and authenticity,Young has been featured in various national publications such as ESSENCE,Vanity Fair, Black Enterprise and others. Her honors include Forbes Next 1000 honoree and the Root 100 list of most influential African Americans in the nation. Young continues to inspire change through her commitment to literacy, community and Black culture.
The custom of wearing academic regalia stems from the Middle Ages when scholars were also clerics and wore the costumes of their monastic order.
The hood was originally a cowl attached to the gown, which could be slipped over the head for warmth. The cap was originally round but has changed to the varieties that we see today.
The gown varies for the respective degrees. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed and can be distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn open with the arms worn through the slips in the elbows of the sleeves. The doctor’s gown, also worn open, has full, bell-shaped sleeves with three horizontal bars stitched across the upper arm. There is a velvet panel draped around the neck and stitched down the front edge. This velvet trimming may be either black or the same color as the velvet border of the hood.
The hood also varies for the respective degrees. The bachelor’s and master’s hoods are of the same design, pointed at the base. The bachelor’s hood is three feet long; the master’s hood is three and one-half feet long. The doctor’s hood is four feet long, of fuller shape, and round at the base. The hood is bordered with velvet, the color which indicates the field of study in which the degree was earned. The colors listed below will be worn by graduates of the various disciplines:

The Chain of Office represents the University President’s authority. Made of brushed bronze, the Chain of Office features the names and years of service of all sixteen Langston University presidents inscribed on individual plates separated by links. The official Langston University seal hangs from the individual plates.
The Presidential Mace symbolizes the university’s governing authority and is present only when the President is in attendance. It signifies the proceedings have official sanction. The Presidential Mace has been updated to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Langston University.
The Presidential Mace is made of walnut wood with antique brass. The gold-plated border has inscribed on it “Office of the President” and “Presidential Mace.” The Mace symbolizes the responsibility of scholarship entrusted to the president as the highest-ranking officer in the academy. The Presidential Mace may be carried by the president or by a designee appointed to represent the Office of the President. The designee is referred to as “The Macebearer.”

The Edwin P. McCabe Honors Program was named after Edwin P. McCabe, a prominent African American pioneer. He was an elected official who was influential in the establishment of Langston University at its present site. The Honors Program was founded through a special legislative appropriation in the summer of 1989. The Honors Program emphasizes academic excellence, fine arts, cultural enrichment activities, and responsiveness to societal and community needs. First Verse
High on a throne with royal mien, Our hope and our mother stand. All gaze with pride upon the scene
High o’er the silv’ry strand; All gaze with pride upon the scene Where our hope and our mother stand.
Chorus
Dear Langston, Dear Langston, Thy sons and daughters brave Will strive on with courage Their honored shrine to save.
With a “Sis! Boom! Bah!” and a “Hip! Hurrah!” with a “Hip-hur-rah!”
We rally to Langston, Dear Langston, to thee.
Second Verse
If ever man should dare bring low
Thy blazoned banner high, We’ll battle with the vicious foe and for thy honor die.
We’ll strive and overcome the foe, or for thy honor die.
Written by James Weldon Johnson
Lift every voice and sing, 'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list'ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on 'til victory is won.
