Hungry for Knowledge: Lunch and Learn at Langsdale HTTP://LANGSDALE.UBALT.EDU

I

n the fall semester of 2014, the library started hosting

a series of informal talks by faculty from across the University called Lunch and Learn at Langsdale. These talks were coordinated by Mike Kiel, a reference and instruction librarian. Mike observed at other campus events that faculty weren’t always aware of projects other schools at UB were working on. This inspired him to have the library host Lunch and Learn events in their new space in the Learning Commons. “As we become more digital it’s important that the library is viewed as a place where people collaborate and learn from each other,” said Mike Kiel.

The fall series showcased the work of three faculty members, who each presented in a different month. The featured speakers could talk about their current scholarship, pitch an idea they are interested in exploring, or present a project that was worked on in collaboration with students. In September, the first Lunch and Learn at Langsdale featured Assistant Professor Sujan Shrestha from the Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies. He presented his research into how games make people feel and some of Professor Shrestha’s students shared their independent study projects. In October, Dr. Sharon Glazer, Professor in the Division of Applied Behavioral Sciences presented on her own research, which examines cross-cultural feelings about stress and how people work together in the workplace. Dr. Carol Molinari, Associate Professor in the School of Health and Human Services, presented in November. Dr. Molinari discussed the usefulness of mindful meditation for students in online courses, specifically presenting on a structured meditation exercise used for online courses in the University of Baltimore’s Healthcare Management program. There will be a spring Lunch and Learn at Langsdale series featuring three more faculty from different schools within UB. All Lunch and Learn sessions are free and open to the public.

A Note from Our Director

H

appy New Year! Welcome back for a new semester and to this latest issue of the Langsdale Link. Not surprisingly we all in Langsdale had a busy fall and are looking forward to more happenings in the spring. As we discussed in our fall issue, we moved into the Learning Commons over the summer and finished our first full semester in the new space. Students love the panoramic views, the light and airiness of the space and the increased computing and group study. We continue to work with the architects and contractors on the renovation project and look forward to demolition of the former Langsdale to begin in the spring and construction in the summer. The plans offer a wide variety of learning spaces for students and a new flexible programming space so that we can expand events like the Learn and Learn series mentioned here. We are also excited to report that we will be developing a new digital collection of UB faculty scholarship in upcoming months – look for more news in an upcoming Link as the project unfolds. It will enable researchers internationally open access to UB work and will increase the visibility of our scholars in a meaningful way. This issue welcomes our newest faculty member, Kyle Breneman, Integrated Digital Services Librarian, and bids farewell to our longest-serving staff member , Carol Vaeth, Head of Book and Document Delivery , at the end of the academic year. We are excited about the work Kyle will be doing with our web and mobile site. As you’ll read, Carol has seen 30 years of library evolution and has been instrumental in statewide resource sharing – we can’t imagine a Langsdale without her! We know we have tremendous shoes to fill; we hope we can find someone with the same commitment to service and the insight and problem-solving skills that Carol has demonstrated for three decades. I think you will find this Link informative; I thank the editorial staff who are dedicated to providing information to our community. As always, I would love to hear from you about what you think. Contact me any time at lholman@ubalt.edu or 410.837.4333.

> > > > > TRANSITIONS < < < < < After 30 Years of Service, Carol Vaeth to Retire

C

arol Vaeth, Langsdale Library’s Book and Document Delivery Supervisor, will retire on the first of July, 2015. Carol has worked at Langsdale for over 30 years, commencing in October of 1984. Most folks at UB, and across the USM system, will remember her for her multi-decade career supervising and processing Interlibrary Loan (ILL). During her long career, she has been an active and respected member in many organizations and committees, including the USMAI Resource Sharing Task Group since 2004 and four years in the UB Administrative Staff Council for Shared Governance. She’s also been a member of the Maryland Association for Interlibrary Loan (MAILL) since 1986. Carol has also received numerous awards for her dedicated work. In 2006, she received the Maryland Library Association’s Paraprofessional Recognition Award, a UB staff award for Outstanding Customer Service in 2011, and most recently, was honored at the 2014 University of Baltimore Staff Awards for her 30 plus years of service at University of Baltimore. Carol’s name has been associated with Interlibrary Loan for so long that after her departure, it will take concentrated effort not to mention her name when making referrals to patrons about Interlibrary loan. Although we will miss seeing her on a daily basis, we are happy for Carol as she steps into the next phase of her journey. As an avid gardener, Carol is looking forward to growing and harvesting lavender in her retirement. She also plans to do more hiking and will enjoy having new flexibility in her schedule to take short trips. Thank you for your work and dedication over the years, Carol!

Librarian Scholar Spotlight

D

id you know that the librarians at Langsdale are scholars in their own right? In addition to facilitating the research of others through library reference services and information literacy instruction, our librarians contribute to the profession through scholarly articles, conference presentations, and more. According to library director, Lucy Holman, “Langsdale’s faculty are extremely active scholars and presenters in their respective areas, and have received regional and national recognition for their work.” A busy academic year in the Learning Commons hasn’t deterred Langsdale’s industrious librarians! In October, resident cataloging expert, Betty Landesman, gave a webinar on standards for collections management for the American Library Association’s Association for Library Collections & Technical Services. In February, Landesman will present at an ALCTS interest group on changes to workflows within library technical services, as well as at the Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference on managing electronic resources.

Librarians from the Reference department are working together to evaluate the impact of the information literacy courses they teach. Natalie Burclaff and Mike Kiel will present in April at the Association of College and Research Libraries on modifying library instruction sessions to meet research goals for specific academic disciplines. The following month, Mike Kiel, Catherine Johnson, and Natalie Burclaff will present at the Maryland Library Association about using assessment data to drive change. Also in May, Michael Shochet will co-present at the MLA conference on presentation skills and public speaking best practices. Natalie Burclaff

Archivists in the Special Collections department also contributed their speaking and writing skills to scholarly and professional dialogues. In November, Aiden Faust had his writing published as part of the book, Common Wealth: Art by African Americans in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Faust will also contribute to a publication accompanying the Women’s Caucus for Art exhibition at American University, which opens this spring in conjunction with the College Art Association conference in Washington, DC.

Aiden Faust

Audiovisual specialist, Siobhan Hagan, hit the conference circuit with enthusiasm last fall. Her presentations and workshops on audiovisual archives were featured at the meetings of the Society of American Archivists, the American Library Association, the Association of Moving Image Archivists, the Mid-Atlantic Archives Conference, and the Northeast Document Conservation Center. Come spring, Hagan expects to teach a preservation webinar for the American Library Association’s Association for Library Collections & Technical Services and lecture in the American Library Association’s Video Round Table-sponsored annual conference pre-conference stream. As you can see, Langsdale librarians have many interests and areas of expertise. Our presentations and publications enrich our professional knowledge and help us better serve the research and information needs of the community.
