Welcome Every member of Langdon is a source of tremendous pride to us.

We live for their successes. In this Annual Review, you will meet just a few of our inspirational members. Every day they refuse to allow their learning disabilities to define them or limit their aspirations.

Langdon is proud to empower their independence. Yet that task is now more challenging than it has ever been for us.

2015 is the year when the long-signalled cuts to social benefits really begin to bite. The Care Act 2014 cuts a huge swathe through the majority of the assumptions that we have made about funding since we started more than 20 years ago – and we have no choice other than to come to terms with this new reality and learn to deal with it – very quickly.

The key impacts of these changes will be felt by those members at the mild to moderate end of the disability scale – precisely where Langdon has been focused – who will now be classed as less needy and therefore are likely to experience significant cut-backs in the support they are getting from local authorities.

It means we have to ask you to dig even deeper if we are to continue to give our amazing Langdon members the support they need as they make the ordinary extraordinary.

SUPPORTED LIVING

The bedrock of independent living is the home environment. We give young adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to live independently in their own home, either sharing with friends or living alone close to other members of the Langdon community. They gain independence in a safe and secure environment, living as a community within a community.

Langdon provides the practical and emotional help and guidance needed to support our members to live independent lives. Our support staff help members to master important everyday living skills, such as household chores, shopping and travelling. Through our unique network of supported living accommodation in London, Hertfordshire and Manchester, we support 94 members in 51 houses and flats.

The properties are well-maintained and range from one-bedroom flats to fivebedroom houses. From mezzuzahs on the doorposts to kosher kitchens, whichever type of accommodation our members choose, all are designed to support a Jewish home life. We also have links with Jewish families in the local community who offer hospitality, inviting members to join them for Shabbat meals and other culturally important events.

Our Outreach service enables members who are not part of one of our communities to commission Langdon’s services. And through Langdon’s telecare services, we empower even more individuals with learning disabilities to take the big step towards having a home of their own, by providing another level of security and comfort.

MEET ROBYN Robyn has come through a lot in her life.

Both her parents passed way when she was young, and Robyn then lived in a number of children’s homes as well as foster care. For the last 4 years, Robyn has been with us at Langdon. She now lives in a Langdon flat, with a flatmate, and is able to live semi-independently.

Robyn leads a full life, working 4 days a week, 2 days in a paid job in a solicitor’s office, and 2 days volunteering at a care home. Robyn is a very quiet person, but she has a circle of friends to whom she is very close.

She says: “Living independently is important to me because I can be like my friends without a disability, and live as normal a life as possible. I am happy because I am settled and know I don’t have to move, hopefully for a very long time.”

We are huge believers in the importance of work for bringing a sense of worth and independence into the lives of the members we support. We are very proud that 85% of Langdon members work, twothirds of whom are in paid employment (the national average for people with learning disabilities in paid work is 7%).

We provide the support as they take their first steps into the world of work, and beyond, working with visionary employers who see past the disability to the value of the person they are employing.

We help Langdon members develop new skills to increase their employability, find job vacancies, help with completion of application forms, prepare them for interviews and help them make the transition from social benefits to paid employment.

While Langdon members each have their own particular difficulties, they also have many strengths and are fully capable of performing tasks that add value to a business. In our experience, firms often find that employing a Langdon individual has the unexpected benefit of bringing their team together and boosting morale.

MEET SIMON Simon is one of the great Langdon success stories. At one time Simon needed 35 hours of support a week – now that’s down to just 7 hours. And it is work that has helped him make huge leaps in his self-confidence.

His paid work includes an administrative role at The PR Office, whose Chairman says of Simon, “He is a great asset to the company because he does his job so very, very well, he is very much liked by everybody, and he is very much part of the team.”

Simon also volunteers at the Cartoon Museum in Central London, where he helps members of the public get the most out of their visit. In addition, he helps out at cubs, scouts and at youth clubs.

Simon does all these jobs with a cheerful, positive attitude, and is extremely reliable and conscientious. He says: “Working is important to me because it gives me a purpose in life, to get up every morning and to meet new people, and to learn new workplace skills as well. Langdon has changed my life.”

EDU CA TION Hundreds of young people with learning difficulties have benefited from our individualised education programmes, gaining crucial skills enabling their transition into independent living.

Langdon College, in Manchester, provides access to a range of nationally recognised qualifications, independent living skills, vocational training, work experience and social and leisure development, all within a Jewish ethos. Alongside the residential and day programmes at the College, new day education programmes in London are being introduced.

Our students are warmly supported as they make their transition towards adult life.

Our extended curriculum allows our students the opportunity to practice and develop their skills in a real home life setting, developing their independence with all daily living skills, such as meal preparation, domestic skills, community access, travel and shopping.

They also learn essential skills to be able to live and get along with others.

Development of communication, social skills and positive behaviour are crucial areas of development for our students.

Students have the opportunity to experience offsite work placements with local businesses as part of their preparation for post-college life.

Langdon offers tailor made programmes to each and every student specific to their educational and development needs. And our new 14-19 Partnership Programme is designed for Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils at school who it is thought would benefit from working in a college environment as part of their timetable.

MEET ANTHONY Anthony came to us as someone who had had real problems controlling his anger, which had meant that his school education was, essentially, a write-off.

Anthony remembers: “I didn’t have any friends. I was struggling quite a lot in life – locked away in my bedroom listening to music and playing my computer games most of the time.

When I came to Langdon College, my anger therapist taught me strategies to control my anger, like hitting a boxing bag that they set up for me. It’s changed my life a lot. It’s made me more confident. I’ve got more friends. I now can control my anger and my temper.”

Now Anthony is a catering student at Bury College, successfully being part of that student community, as well as a very popular member of Langdon College.

Anthony says: “Langdon’s been amazing for me. It’s changed my life completely.”

We want Langdon members to live the fullest, most independent lives they can, and of course that includes having a vibrant social life. We all crave the connection to others. But for Langdon members, that can carry special challenges. One of the most uplifting experiences at Langdon is seeing young members come out from their shells and blossom.

We help develop the life skills that foster sociability and friendships, and facilitate activities, trips and holidays to provide the basis for a lively social life. These include activities such as pub nights, coffee afternoons, sports, cinema and theatre outings, and trips further afield, including annual holidays. Many members participate in Friday Night dinners at each other’s homes, and enjoy a Shabbat lunch together at Maccabi House.

We want Langdon members to live the fullest, most independent lives they can, including having a vibrant social life.

Each year, Langdon members are offered a choice of holiday as part of their supported living activities. The holidays range from UK-based breaks to holidays abroad. Langdon’s international exchange programme gives our young members the opportunity to experience living and working overseas to broaden their horizons and develop their skills and knowledge.

Langdon’s Brady Clubs give Jewish youth with learning disabilities, aged 12-19, the opportunity to meet new people, make friends and have fun.

These groups give the chance to be involved in the development programmes and the running of the clubs, in an environment that understands and caters to everyone’s needs.

MEET HANNAH Hannah epitomises what Langdon can do, showing how the full range of Langdon’s services – education, supported living, employment, social – changes a life. It started at the age of 17, when she went to Langdon College.

Her mother takes up the story: “In those three years at Langdon College, she learnt how to live independently. Now she lives in a Langdon house in Edgware, with two other girls. She can clean and cook and iron and take care of her own personal hygiene and shop and entertain.

She volunteers at an old age home three days a week now, and has just started her first paid job. Langdon somehow enabled her… I don’t know how they did it… to live a completely normal life.”

This includes a full social life. Hannah says: “I like seeing friends, going to the pub, going out for coffee, having people over on Friday night. I like the independence I get living away from my parents.”

FINANCIAL SUMMARY 2014 The Langdon Group comprises the Langdon Foundation, which has three subsidiaries, Langdon College, Langdon Community and Langdon Housing. The Foundation owns properties which our members occupy, raises funds to support our members and provides finance to the subsidiaries. Grants are made by Langdon Foundation for areas that are not funded from statutory sources, such as employment, the social activities programme, Brady Clubs and certain College activities.

During the period, Langdon has held various fundraising events, including our key fundraising dinner in London that raised over £250,000. In addition, Langdon organised a highly successful bike ride, two golf days, a business breakfast and various other events.

Significant fundraising was also achieved from major donors and Trusts, and the Group had total voluntary income of £898,720 (2013: £811,168). The financial performance for the sixteen month period ended 31st December 2014 shows the Group received donations and income of £7,662,717 (2013: £5,660,049) of which £7,575,630 (2013: £5,702,851) was paid out on expenses, leaving a surplus of £87,087 (2013 deficit: £42, 802). Langdon is now serving more members and our cost base has increased.

What makes Langdon unique is the added value we bring to our members’ lives – so that they don’t just exist, but thrive.

It means that, despite greater operational efficiencies, we operate at a deficit, which we only bridge through the deep generosity of our supporters. This situation will be even more challenging in the year ahead with impending cuts to social benefits and severe reductions in local authority support.

New Chapters from Langdon is a business that sells second-hand books online – with a difference.

Those who work at New Chapters are Langdon members with learning disabilities. This is usually their first step into the world of work. They learn the importance of punctuality, responsibility, reliability, hard work, precision, interacting with the social nature of the workplace – all skills and values that people in work need.

From here they gain the experience, the confidence and the self-esteem that allow them to move on to working outside the Langdon community, and to extend their independence in all aspects of their lives.

It is life-changing. And you can help.

Lynda Landsman volunteers for a couple of hours every Wednesday evening at Langdon Brady Club. This is a club for 12-19 year olds with learning disabilities.

Lynda explains: “The young members who come can find it very difficult to make friends in the mainstream world. Often their only friends are their brother and sister’s friends. So this is a place where it’s their own club, they choose the activities, and make their own friendships.”

Lynda finds volunteering immensely rewarding. She says: “To anybody who is thinking of volunteering, I would say, just come and see what happens. Often people don’t know what to expect, and that puts them off. I don’t want to get all evangelical about it – it’s just great fun.”
