Celebrating 49 years. MESSAGE FROM THE L ANGAR A COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR

2018 was an exciting year for the Foundation as we continue to support Canada’s pathways College. We joined the College to launch its first-ever anniversary campaign, Beyond 49 which celebrates Langara’s 49 years on 49th Avenue and will strengthen the College for the future by reconnecting with our community, and raising much needed funds for students. The Foundation set a goal to raise $2.5 million for student support, teaching and learning, and career readiness initiatives. We were excited to welcome an incredible team of alumni and community leaders to the Beyond 49 Ambassador Team who will support our anniversary campaign and help us reach our goal. Thanks to our valued donor community, the Beyond 49 campaign is off to an incredible start helping us to raise $892,905 for Langara students in 2018. Once again, we are proud to continue to grow the number of scholarships, bursaries and other supports available for our students. In 2018, the Foundation supported more than 800 students, distributing over $600,00 in financial aid. Our donors also helped to create opportunities to enhance the Langara student experience. One example is the opportunity to provide leadership training opportunities to our student volunteer program, VOLT. The following report highlights some of the stories, partnerships and impacts that you, our donors, have created. As an alumnus and a donor, I am proud to celebrate Langara’s past 49 years and help to build a stronger future for the College. I know first-hand how funds raised can change a student’s life and I am continually humbled by the generosity of our donors. It is a privilege to witness the impact that we have as a community. On behalf of the Foundation board and staff, our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support. We could not do this without you!

A giving community. PARTNERSHIPS AND EMPLOYEE GIVING

The growth of the Foundation and support for Langara students over the past few years would not be possible without our employees and partners. The generosity of our extended Langara community helps us do more, and each year we’re excited to create new partnerships and connections that help to provide the best possible experience for our students. RBC BECOMES L ANGAR A COLLEGE’S FIRST CAMPUS-WIDE PARTNER As the College’s bank for over 20 years, RBC Royal Bank has been an important member of the Langara community. This year, the College was excited to extend its relationship with RBC, making them Langara’s first campus-wide partner. “The partnership between Langara and RBC is unique, as it encompasses philanthropy, sponsorship, and on-campus presence that enhances the experience of Langara students,” said Ajay Patel, Vice-President, External Development. In addition to banking services and employee professional development workshops, RBC provided grant funding to the Foundation in support of a new indigenous upgrading program. RBC also joined the College in celebrating its 49th anniversary as presenting sponsor of the Beyond 49 signature celebration, Community Day. RBC now has a greater presence on campus, sharing their expertise and resources with our students and Langara departments. In August 2018, Langara became the first B.C. college to open an RBC On-Campus hub, providing financial literacy education programs and advice to students. The RBC team have become important members of the campus community supporting a number of key Langara events including Welcome Week, Co-op and Career Week, and Clubs Day. Langara faculty now also have an opportunity to bring RBC’s expertise into the classroom as guest lecturers.

EMPLOYEE GIVING AT L ANGAR A Beyond a remarkable place to study, Langara is a thriving community of devoted educators and staff. Every day, our community works together to create an environment that allows our students to grow in confidence, recognize the opportunities ahead, and realize their potential. Our employees are giving of their time and talent and many go above and beyond. From the success of our annual Support our Students celebration, to the many scholarships created by employees, the spirit of giving is alive at Langara. Together, they sent a powerful message on their commitment and passion for students and the College. In 2018, our employee community raised over $215,000 (after matching) for valuable scholarships, bursaries, and projects.

FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH LSU FOR GIVING TUESDAY A global day of giving, Giving Tuesday is a day for people to support the causes important to them, and to celebrate the act of giving. For Langara’s 2018 Giving Tuesday campaign, the Foundation asked the community to support one of Langara’s best kept secrets and a program close to our hearts, the VOLT volunteer program. Since 2010, VOLT volunteers have contributed over 57,000 hours within the community. Our Giving Tuesday campaign raised almost $10,000 (before matching) for VOLT leadership training opportunities and other student scholarships and bursaries. The Foundation was proud to once again partner with the Langara Students Union (LSU) for Giving Tuesday who donated $2,500 to VOLT. This was contribution was in addition to LSU's commitment earlier in the year to increase support to the Foundation, which enhanced funding to their existing awards, and also provided new bursaries for students in financial need.

Launching Beyond 49. A CELEBR ATION OF 49 YEARS ON 49TH AVENUE

Langara started its journey on West 49th Avenue in 1970, as a campus of Vancouver Community College. Almost five decades later, Langara College is recognized as a leading undergraduate institution with a reputation for providing exceptional learning opportunities. On October 10 2018, Langara College launched Beyond 49, an 18-month long campaign that marks its 49th year of operations and it’s 25th anniversary as an independent public college. The campaign is a celebration of Langara’s history, an opportunity to recognize and reconnect with Langarans, and raise much needed funds for student scholarships, bursaries, and College initiatives. Over the past 49 years, Langara has helped generations of students forge a brighter future through education. In support of the next generation, the Beyond 49 campaign aims to raise $2.5 million to fund three priority areas: student support, enhancing academic innovation, and career readiness. Langara students face new challenges every day. With the support of our generous donor community, Beyond 49 can support students during their studies, provide unique experiences that prepare graduates for successful careers, and assist our instructors get innovative teaching and learning ideas off the ground. Each building a stronger future for Langara College in its own way.

TREKKING INTO THE FUTURE To launch our anniversary year, we invited our campus community to celebrate at two special events that honoured our past and created new memories for the future. On October 13, 1970, students, faculty, and VIPs made their way from the VCC King Edward Centre to the new VCC Langara campus – an event dubbed ‘The Great Trek’. To kick-off celebrations of our 49th year on 49th Avenue, we went back to where it all began, walking a portion of the 1970 trek route to campus. The trek honoured the original Langarans who helped make the campus what it is today and was followed by a campus-wide celebration and pep rally at the College to officially launch Beyond 49.

A HEALTHY START FOR BEYOND 49 The Langara College Foundation has been in silent phase fundraising since the beginning of 2017 – a traditional approach to any major fundraising campaign. We were excited to announce that we were already over 50% towards our goal at the official launch of Beyond 49 in October 2018. By the end of 2018, we had raised $1,408,555, 56% towards our total fundraising goal of $2.5 million.

A CAMPAIGN WITH MANY SUPPORTERS We are honoured to welcome a team of alumni and community leaders to the Beyond 49 Ambassador team. Led by Chief Wayne Sparrow and Dr. Lane Trotter, the ambassadors joined members of the Langara College Foundation Board to help raise awareness of Langara and how people can be part of our anniversary campaign.

MAKING SOL AR POWER POSSIBLE Beyond 49 will fund a number of projects and initiatives across the College, and two Langara students helped make a sustainability project a reality. The Langara Sustainability Club was established in October 2016 with a goal to raise awareness and take action to address environmental concerns at the College. Led by co-founders and environmental business students, Cameron Bower and Sterling Keful, the students’ first project was to raise funds towards the purchase and install solar panels for the Science and Technology building. The Sustainability Club helped to successfully fund the project through a variety of on-campus fundraising activities. A grant from Vancity and a gift from an individual donor helped make the project a reality. The solar panels were installed in September 2018.

A L ASTING LEGACY. Susan Pike had a passion for learning, knowledge, and helping others. Joining Langara as a mature student, Susan turned her passion into a career. After graduating from the Library and Information Technology program in 2013, Susan became a valued member of the library community as a Librarian at the Vancouver Public Library and as a volunteer at the Crane Library at UBC. After Susan’s passing in May 2018, her husband Ernie Davis wanted to create a legacy that honoured Susan and her fond memories of Langara. “I’m so pleased to partner with Langara to make the Susan Pike and Ernie Davis Memorial Scholarship a reality. Susan was not only a proud graduate of Langara but she strongly believed in community giving, and the power of education and learning,” said Ernie. The Susan Pike and Ernie Davis Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to student each fall who receives a high GPA and is involved in their communities and delivers excellent customer service. Susan is missed by all who knew her and her memory will live on at Langara with this scholarship, inspiring future generations of library and information professionals to follow their passion and be giving of their time and knowledge.

A GIFT TO INSPIRE THE FUTURE. Thermal energy solutions company, Thermanex has been a long-time supplier and sustainability partner of Langara College. Thermanex installed its first-ever thermal energy technology system in Langara’s Student Union and C Buildings in 2009. The technology allows buildings to heat and cool itself, helping to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions at the College. Thermanex continues to support the College’s sustainability initiatives, and in 2018 they decided to do even more. The Thermanex technology was a new approach to sustainable energy, and they want to offer Langara students an opportunity to get their ideas off the ground. “Our direct experience with Langara’s support of entrepreneurship and innovation led to our partnership with the Foundation. We know, first-hand, that Langara practices what they teach,” said Jeff Weston, President and CEO TC Thermanex. The new Thermenex Entrepreneurship Award is open to all Langara students and is awarded to a student who has the best proposal to pitch a new business start-up that showcases innovation and entrepreneurship.
