What Is A Slipper Clutch And Do You Really Need One?

Overview

● A regular clutch assembly, as we have explained in one of our previous articles, comprises an outer basket, an inner hub, friction plates, steel plates, a pressure plate and springs. Together, all these components allow a rider to engage or disengage drive to the rear wheel using a clutch lever. So, when you pull the clutch lever, the inner hub, connected to the rear wheels via a gearbox is disengaged from the crankshaft input, allowing for a free rotation of the rear wheel. This set-up works very well and doesn’t require a slip function as long as you are not engaging in overly aggressive, or wrong downshifts. You probably won’t need it as badly, if you know how to rev match and downshift at an optimal rpm to prevent the engine from over-revving and avoid rear wheel hop.

● Lanesplit provides the best bike slipper clutch for your bike. It reduces wear and tear on the engine and transmission.

Reduces Effects Of Engine Braking

● The main benefit of a slipper or back-torque-limiting clutch is that it reduces the effect of engine braking on the rear wheel under deceleration. When you close the throttle on your bike, the rear wheel tries to turn the engine rather than the other way around, resulting in a sometimes considerable braking force.

Reduces Engine Transmission

● Assist and Slipper Clutch reduces the effects of engine braking. It also reduces wear and tear on the engine and transmission, thereby improving its durability.

Prevents The Rear-wheel From Locking UP

● Another key advantage of having a slipper clutch is that it helps in the overall prevention of rear-wheel lock up, engine seizure, and transmission failure. All of which can cost half of the overall proof that you might have paid for the bike.

Improves The Bike Performance

● The main purpose of a slipper clutch is to prevent over engine rev and rear wheel hop (or clatter) especially under hard braking in a vehicle (usually performance motorcycles). It does so by partially slipping until engine's speed matches with the vehicle's speed upon sudden braking.

Reduce Accidental Downshifts

● A clutch connects the engine with transmission. The transmission could drive the engine if the rider accidentally down shifts at higher speeds. A slipper clutch will limit this back torque by allowing both units to run at different speeds. Slipper clutch is typically used in racing conditions where the rider can make use of the engine braking for more sharper corner entry with out over-revving the engine or a nasty high side.
