editor’s letter Hello Lane County I am pleased to introduce ourselves and to say hello on behalf of Lane Monthly. Our goal is to bring you closer to Lane County with in-depth stories and coverage of the people, places and events that make our region a beautiful place to call home.

In this inaugural issue, we have been fortunate to assemble a talented and enthusiastic group of contributing writers, photographers, designers and illustrators. Some may be new names to our readers; you may recognize others. With 4,600 square miles to cover, Lane Monthly has the opportunity to explore our economy, arts and culture, food and drink, health and wellness, athletics, nature and the outdoors, education, and current issues that matter within our communities.

Leading off for March we have our covered bridges photo essay by photographer and amateur historian William Leach. Bill was a gem to work with and generously shared his images and words to bring our readers closer to the history of our county. We give Bill huge thanks and hope he inspires you to take time out and visit one of our 20 historic bridges.

We are approaching food a little differently within Lane Monthly and will center our coverage on a category or topic. This month, we sent out our hungry writers to breakfast. We bring you five restaurant reviews followed by a listing guide of recommended breakfast joints throughout our area.

nists and will be sharing their perspectives with our readers each month.

We hope you enjoy their insights, musings and observations as we are fortunate to have their talent onboard.

Vanessa Salvia, another of Lane’s literary talents, brings us a feature story on the Evergreen Tattoo Invitational which takes place in

March at the Willamalane Center in Springfield. Vanessa’s story introduces us to pioneers in the tattoo community, and as it turns out, an economic powerhouse, bringing hundreds of artists and visitors from around the country.

In our business and economy coverage we have a Measure 91 update from Anthony Johnson, who co-wrote the original ballot measure.

Full recreational marijuana is still a ways out, but creating rules for implementation is an ongoing process. Those working on it want to make sure

the rules are well crafted in order to lay the groundwork for a system that is safe and profitable for the many local growers, producers and existing dispensary owners in Lane County. In other business news, we explore the new Oregon rule allowing for Community Public Offerings, allowing Oregonians to directly invest in local companies. Here, we talk with Stuart Phillips of Red Wagon Creamery, the first certified Oregon CPO. Springtime is the perfect time to think about spring cleaning our bodies. To that end we hope you enjoy our visit to the YMCA where we visited a group who exercise and laugh together each week. Now that’s community! We also have a visit to the spring garden and a list of local CSA (community supported agriculture) farm options for you to consider as our bountiful areas begin to produce all kinds of fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains and more.

Map and accompanying guide. Artist Bron Smith was gracious to share his creation with us and we are excited to share it with you.

For our essay, we were lucky to snag a piece from the talented author Melissa Hart, whose book Wild is on sale in local bookstores. Upstairs at the Duck Store in the books department, you can find Hart’s book and also many more recommendations from our book review expert, Andy Lillich. And you can find info on theater, art, wine, St. Patrick’s Day party ideas and more for your entertainment.

In closing I would like to thank all of our contributors, community members, friends and families who worked with us to bring Lane Monthly to life. We are excited and enthusiastic to bring your stories to life. While I enjoyed my brief time as editor and chief bottle washer, I am happy to hand the reigns of Editor in Chief to Suzi Steffen, formerly of the Eugene Weekly and the University of Oregon. Together with our awesome team, we hope to bring something worthwhile and uplifting to our neighbors in Lane County.

Living in the Lane

The A Heceta Head Lighthouse

s Oregonians we are fortunate to have an abundance of year round opportunities for exploring the outdoors and our natural environment.

This month we bring you the Heceta Head Lighthouse, notably the most photographed lighthouse in America, and worthy of a daytrip with families or friends.

Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint is located in a cove at the mouth of Cape Creek. There are picnic tables sheltered from the wind and a great view of the ocean. A short trail leads to the historic Heceta Head lighthouse and assistant keeper’s house. Heceta Head trail is part of a 7-mile network. Trails of varying difficulty feature beach and wildlife viewing areas. Wildlife refuge islands feature a view of common murres, cormorants, gulls, and other bird nesting areas. Sea lions and whales can be seen from the beach and cliff-top lighthouse. On the west side of 1,000-foot-high Heceta Head, 205 feet above the ocean, the lighthouse is one of the most photographed on the coast. The light at top of 56-foot tower was illuminated in 1894; the automated beacon, seen 21 miles from land, is rated as the strongest light on the Oregon coast. The historic assistant lighthouse keeper’s house (Heceta House; built 1893) offers bed and breakfast rentals and facilities for group events. The bed and breakfast is operated by a concessionaire of the U.S. Forest Service and can be reached at 1-866-547-3696 or hecetaheadlighthouse.com. Common murres, which lay their eggs on the bare rocks, can be easily seen by looking down, just over the railing near the lighthouse. Brown pelicans commonly fly by, as do bald eagles. Migrating gray whales can be seen as they travel to and from Alaska and Baja California. May is a great time to look right down on the migrating mothers and calves as they travel close to shore. There are natural caves, tidepools, and a sandy beach for building sandcastles.

Day-use parking permits are required year round at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint. A daily ($5), 12-month or 24-month permit, an Oregon Coast Passport, or a valid state park camping receipt is required. Purchase daily permits from a machine at the park. The 12-month and 24-month permits are sold at most major state park offices.

Lighthouse tours are available 7 days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather and staff permitting. Tour groups, school groups, and other groups please e-mail us to schedule a tour at Heceta.h.lighthouse@ oregon.gov.

The Covered

Bridges of Lane County

No where was the construction of covered bridges more embraced than in Lane County.

T

he history of covered bridges in Oregon is the history of Oregon itself, as pioneers began to cross the Oregon Trail to settle in the territory.

Covered bridge construction in Oregon dates from the mid-1850s when “bridge builders often camped out at remote sites, living off the land or contracting with local farmers for good. Early owners of covered bridges financed

construction by charging tolls—3 cents for a sheep, 5 cents for a horse and rider, and 10 cents for a team of horses and a wagon” (see Oregon’s Covered Bridges by Bill Cockrell).

These bridges bound struggling communities together, facilitated commerce, transported children to schools and allowed for quicker access to news, medical support and mail.

No where was the construction of covered bridges more embraced than in Lane County.

Lane County—with 20 covered bridges—has more remaining covered bridges than any county west of the Mississippi River. In fact, Cottage Grove is considered and proclaimed

What should we know about Encircle Films?

The most important thing about Encircle Films is that we work to inspire action. We want people to come and watch these documentaries, and then we want them to do something! So the discussions following our films are led by local activists, filmmakers and subject experts who can inform and educate people to make wiser choices. Action to change our world in a more positive way— starting within our own community of Eugene.

When and where are the documentaries shown?

We screen films the first Thursday of the month, from September through May, at the Bijou Art Cinemas, 492 E. 13th Avenue in Eugene.

What are some of the film topics?

Fierce Green Fire is about our environment, PTSD in the film Free the Mind. Other topics include healthcare, American Winter on poverty, Mental Health, GMOs, Immigration.

Our standing-room only film in December was The Power of Forgiveness.

Where do the films come from?

The documentaries are produced by independent filmmakers, nationally and internationally. The common theme is that the filmmakers are all digging for the truth on a given subject. We want to expose viewers to important and high quality films that they might not otherwise have a chance to see.

Who leads the discussions after the films?

We invite local leaders from the Eugene/Springfield area who are well informed about a topic and can help to ‘bring it home’ for the movie viewers.

Sometimes we include the filmmakers themselves in the discussions. We’ve had some powerful and thought-provoking discussions with a lot of involvement from the audience. It’s been amazing.

How do you choose the films that you’ll show?

Encircle Films is a non-profit organization led by a board of directors and volunteers. At the beginning of the season we set a focus for the year and

How do you encourage people to become involved?

Our mantra is Watch—Discuss—Act. In addition to the recommendations from the local speakers, we hand out an “Act Up” flyer that lists websites, people to contact such as legislators, and personal things you can do to enact change. We understand that time is limited for everyone, so we focus on easy things you can do frequently to get involved and stay involved. We encourage folks to be an active activist!

What makes Encircle Films unique?

I think the thing that really makes us unique is the community we live in. Eugene is a politically active community—we show up to rallies, we share our opinions, and we speak out. So the documentaries are a natural extension of the desire in this community to make things happen, to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity and that we plan for a healthy planet for our children and our grandchildren.

What are some of the topics coming up?

In February we’re screening Shadows of Liberty, a film that explores how the news media is owned by large corporations that decide which stories we’ll see and how they will be reported. Other topics include the rising rates of college tuition and our pollinator friends which seem to be vanish-

ing Bee’s area featured in the film More Than Honey.

Senior Stretch Having Fun and Staying Fit with Friends at the Eugene YMCA

A

t first glance, the Strength and Stretch class for active older adults at the Eugene YMCA may not seem like much. To get started, they chat, while making a slow circle of the room.

As participants filter in and join the socialization, the walk picks up into a jaunt to upbeat music.

“Reach up to the sky, like you’re reaching for chocolates,” Jessica Ubel, one of the instructors calls out. “Reach up high!”

For these first minutes, everyone chats and catches up on what’s been going on since they saw each other last. The interaction is a big part of the appeal.

“The Y has tons of little communities,” says Kimberly Miller, the other of the class’ two instructors. “This one is near and dear to my heart.”

It’s special to the class members as well, perhaps because it’s a community with longevity. Virginia Onsrud, 87 and a half, and Nancy Smith, 82, have been attending the class for 17 and 20 years respectively.

“It’s good for me,” Smith says. “I like the routines. They’re gentle but cover about everything that needs to be stretched or pulled.”

Onsrud, who joined the class after her daughter joined the Y and told her to check it out, has been active all her life. She took a couple of months off after quadruple bypass surgery 12 years ago but otherwise faithfully attends the twice-weekly class. The two sometimes meet for lunch afterward and the class as a whole celebrates birthdays and holds a summer picnic.

“The socialization is a major part of it,” agrees Connie Clark, 72. “For a lot of people, it’s a way of connecting.”

Clark credits the class with keeping her in good enough shape to continue playing tennis and lead and active life. “It keeps me healthy,”

she says. “The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and know how to stimulate us.”

The exercise is nothing to laugh at. After the warm up walk comes mild aerobics with swinging arms and legs and fancy footwork to encourage circulation and coordination. Then the class moves into standing stretches against the walls to open their hips and shoulders, followed by some balancing maneuvers. The instructors keep it light and entertaining, especially when they move onto strength exercises with hand weights and resistance bands.

“Why do elephants paint their toenails red?”

Kimberly calls out. Then she gets the group — men and women ranging from their mid-60s to early 90s – to do bicep curls.

etty Parker, the oldest participant, has been attending the class for about 20 years. “I’m 92 years old, and I’ve got to keep in shape,” she says. “It’s such a good place to be. It’s friendly and people aren’t judgmental.”

That love goes both ways. Miller is inspired by her students. “I love this group,” she says.

“They’re wonderful. They’re social and feisty.

They can do amazing things.”

It’s a good thing they can, because the class continues with 20 minutes of cardio in the gym, followed by some deep stretches on the mats and finally a cool down. Then it’s time for lunch.

A Practical Necessity– Spring Cleaning

B

ody blossoms from spirit blossoms from body. This wisdom has grown into every aspect of my life and is the single most important lesson I teach. ‘The body’ can mean any space; a house, a garden, any setting filled with life, energy, spirit. Applied, this idea can heighten healing and demonstrate how to live life in rhythm with one’s surroundings. In use it goes like this. At this time of year we say March walks in like a lion. We look around and can see that the lion is in full bloom. It is fragrant, gorgeous and early. That is the essence of now and we being a part of nature, mirror its brilliance. We are in bloom early, warming from the winter, yearning to be outdoors in lighter clothing, ready to burst in anticipation of sun.

Spring has arrived and with it the wonder rhythm undertaking that is

spring cleaning which leaves our homes and minds feeling refreshed. Often I notice people stopping short, cleaning only their living spaces, their bodies always last on the list. Winter’s hibernation gathers and stores for months of cold pulling us into internal reflection, weight gain, and the desire for time around the hearth. This cold forces our muscles to clench inward and up with shoulders raised around the neck in protection to keep our cores heated. Spring’s warmth unfreezes and unwinds this posture spreading the inner fire throughout our body…but not fully. The collected stuff that has been locked up, frozen and compressed often informs our winter movements. As a result ailment can set in, then overuse due to inefficient muscle activation, then injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the pathways between. The systems lose their communication with one another, acting as odd pairings sticking together rather than working separately. Cleaning becomes a practical necessity.

We are all directly affected by this symbolic spring cleanse. Currently,

my dancer body aches for relief, for stretching and for outpouring of this collected winter energy. In the healing studio, the request for relief from my clients peaks in spring and radiant students come forward out of nowhere ready to learn with fervor. At this time, a giant portion of my work is prove the correlation between body-space and the surrounding world through the practice of Thai healing. A Thai massage practitioner is like a weaver within the body space encouraging reorganization, reintegration, a clearing of unnecessary muscular

adhesions or sticky clutter. The bodyworker directly realigns pathways by gently pulling and stretching range of motion, using deep compression and targeted pressure to put space between the muscles so that the channels can function freely. This leaves to body awake, aware, relaxed with the desire to move and stretch, which is our healthy state of being. It is an intentional spring cleanse drawing toxicity and stagnation both energetically and physically out of the body, preparing it to be active and warm…just like spring! Practitioners take the gathered winter storehouse at the core and move energy into the distal realms of the body and what follows is an outward flow of fresh nutrients, blood, and lymph. This spring intentionally allow the body and spirit and space to blossom and work as one, to settle into warmth and true centering by cleaning on all levels.

art of Lane County’s beauty is that you can go anywhere—mountains, Coast, trails up the McKenzie, along the Willamette River bike paths in Eugene and Springfield— and see people of all ages doing all kinds of outdoor fun things, often with animal companions. OK, usually dogs.

And that’s a good thing, says Tuesday Scott, the Greenhill Humane Society’s community outreach coordinator. “All dogs need exercise,” she says, “and most dogs don’t get enough.”

Although there’s no puppy season (it is kitten season; more on that later) and Greenhill doesn’t have a ton of puppies at any time of year, many people prefer getting a new dog in the spring or summer so that they can get to know the animal during a time when it’s easier to go outside.

Scott knows that dog-lovers appreciate sunbreaks or even the days-long sun we’ve had in Lane County this winter and spring, but a reminder: That pittie, doxie, Chihuahua, or retriever will need as much exercise and mental stimulation in the bad weather as on beautiful days, so stock up on rain gear for the dog and yourself.

The spring means something very different for cats.

Unfixed or feral female cats tend to get pregnant in time for spring births, so there might be kittens around your yard or in the park, on the river path or under bushes behind a restaurant. Scott says that it’s important for people to remember never to touch or pick up those kittens. “The mother is likely coming back for them,” Scott says, and kittens can easily

For your pet cats, spring is a time when fleas return in full force. In this climate, says Dr. Joey Goldthorpe of Cat Care Ltd., fleas never really go away, but they do seem to ramp it up a bit as the sun returns. That means cats—and dogs too—need flea treatment year-round.

A few years ago, Goldthorpe says, the cat world was rocked by counterfeit Frontline flea treatment that was available over the counter. Now, she says, it’s safer, but it’s still probably better to buy your flea and heartworm treatment from an actual vet because the chain of handling is clearer.

But more than that, she cautions, it’s key not to use dog products on cats or vice versa. “Some people will get a dog flea product and put it on the cat,” she says. “But some of those dog products with pyrethrins are extremely toxic to kitties. “ Guess what else is toxic to cats and common in the spring and early summer? Lilies. “Any plants in the lily family can cause acute kidney failure,” Goldthorpe says. And that’s “any part of the plant—the leaf, the flower, anything.”

Because people often bring Easter lilies into their houses at this time of year, Goldthorpe cautions cat owners to make sure the lilies are impossible for the cat to get. Indoor cats especially love to nibble on any greenery that comes into the house, she says.

“Outdoor cats have other things they can nibble on if they want,” she adds. (Owners of cats who go outside will know from the grass-filled cat puke how very true this is.)

And speaking of Easter—which is Sunday, April 5 this year—that’s not a good time to give a baby bunny as a pet. Scott says that Greenhill sees many rabbit surrenders in the early summer, when the Easter Bunny has become a full-sized rabbit with what she calls “undesirable behaviors.”

The same mantra that applies to dogs and cats applies to rabbits, Scott says: Spay or neuter early!

After all, the phrase “breeding like rabbits” came from somewhere. (Greenhill or your vet can take care of spaying or neutering any of these animals.)

So, keep those cats away from lilies, keep those dogs away from mud (just kidding; we know that would never work), keep the flea applications current, and tune in next month for more Lane County pet talk.

Friends and Gifts from the Hive The honey bee

and its relative the bumble bee are directly responsible for the pollination of over 90 fruit and vegetable crops globally. The loss of the bee would spell disaster for crops which are not self-pollinating, and thus for our agricultural food supply.

The health of bee colonies worldwide may be seen as an indicator of global ecological balance. For nearly a decade, “colony collapse disorder,” the phenomenon describing the disappearance of bees and their failure to return to their hives, has been linked to everything from global warming to cell phone towers. One indisputable threat to bees, however, is the use of certain insecticides which are highly toxic to honey bees and bumble bees.

The city of Eugene was the first city in the nation to ban the use of neonicotinoid pesticides on all city property. Eugeneans may be proud of their part in helping to save the bees. But bees do more. As if pollinating crops weren’t enough, we may thank bees as well for their hive gifts of raw honey, pollen and propolis, all three valuable superfoods/herbal substances in their own right.

In addition to being a sweet treat, raw honey is also an effective anti-microbial both internally and topically, helpful in healing wounds and burns since it stimulates blood flow assisting in new tissue growth as well as preventing infection. Manuka honey from New Zealand is particularly revered for this.

Since ancient Greek and Roman times, bee pollen has been touted as the so-called “nectar of the gods,” used by athletes and warriors for stamina and endurance. Locally sourced pollen may alleviate seasonal allergies, but if you plan to try this, be sure you do not have a bee product allergy first.

Propolis is the bees’ antiseptic, composed of resins and saps gathered by workers and used to sterilize the hive, repelling germs and parasites.

The highly appreciable amounts of bioflavonoids having anti-inflammatory, antihistamine and antimicrobial activity make propolis valuable in oral hygiene products among other uses.

This quote—which research tells us is probably from a beekeepers’ convention and not from Albert Einstein, to whom it’s often attributed— tells us why bees are so important: They ensure our food supply; they give us honey, bee pollen, and propolis—and, of course, they’re beautiful insects that keep the world humming along.

Morning Glory, downtown near the train station, opened in 1996 and is Eugene’s longest-running vegetarian and vegan café. The menu is large and well-rounded enough, however, that all hungry diners can find something satisfying. This homestyle café serves savory or sweet breakfasts all day, with a lunch menu and a kids’ menu of eggs, pancakes and French toast.

When Heidi Tunnell’s father suggested she advertise her Creswell Bakery with an Interstate 5 billboard, her reaction was, “Tacky. You know, not really the image I had in mind.”

From the Savory menu, the Happy Morning Sandwich ($9) is a fresh split biscuit slathered with herbed tofu sour cream. One half is topped with a soy sausage patty, while the other comes with an herbed tofu patty. Tomato slices top both halves, and alongside is herbed home fries smothered in what they call “tantric mushroom gravy” which is also generously served on biscuits ($6) and other potato dishes. They even manage to offer a satisfying vegan “omelette” made with veggies folded into a potato shell and topped with tofu sour cream.

The Sweet menu has many familiar morning favorites such as waffles topped with fresh fruit, a bowl of oatmeal or granola, or The Muse— a poached apple stuffed with fruit compote and tofu cream ($7).

This is the kind of café that is busy nearly all day long. Service is friendly and quick, and the location near Smith Family Books and Fifth Street Public Market make it a great destination for a leisurely morning. Stop in for a sit-down meal or an espresso or herbal tea on the go, and pick up freshly baked breads, pastries and cakes made with local, organic ingredients with many gluten-free options.

At 11:17 on a Saturday morning, Brails Restaurant is hopping with activity. My companion and I signed up for the wait list but were more quickly seated at the counter. The counter is a fun place to watch the comings and goings of the black clad waiters, as well as Joy Knudtson, the owner and operator who greets each guest with enthusiasm and warmth, her own unique brand of legendary hospitality We ordered steak and eggs with a side of grits, which are a nice surprise. The turn-around time on breakfast was very fast. The eggs were over easy and the English muffin toasted perfectly, our hash browns, crispy and golden brown. The coffee was tasty and the price acceptable. Best of all, the steak was rare as ordered, no mean feat in Eugene

But it worked. “We get new people passing through and lots of local people who didn’t know we existed,” she says. That local anonymity is hard to imagine considering the bakery—formerly known as The Heidi Tunnell Catering Company—has grown steadily due to a growing number of enthusiastic patrons appreciative of its artisanal baked goods and locally sourced comfort foods. Tunnell and her food-savant kitchen collaborator Jason Robinson have been rewarding visitors since opening their doors in 2008.

Buster’s Main Street Café, Cottage Grove

Just a short drive south from Eugene on I-5 in Cottage Grove, you will find a great little restaurant called Buster’s Main Street Café. This gem is named after the 1926 Buster Keaton film “The General,” which was filmed in Cottage Grove and the surrounding countryside.

I found it a perfect location to meet for a business brunch. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a waiter who was pleasant and very attentive. I told him it was my first time there and asked if he minded if took some pictures. Before I knew it, he was giving

me a tour. Located in the same building as the old Cottage Grove Hotel, the café has a homey elegance to its atmosphere.

The menu is inventive and very diverse, offering unique daily specials like an omelette featuring elk. The restaurant often serves venison, alligator, and rabbit. The menu also highlights Northwest ingredients, many of which are from local sources.

I had a blood orange mimosa while waiting for the chicken fried steak and eggs with a choice of home fries or hash browns. The gravy was made from scratch, full of sausage, creamy and just delicious. My associate ordered the eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfectly all the way around. The hollandaise sauce, also made from scratch, was as good as any I have had. It had the perfect sheen and was silky to the last bite.

On the day that my companion and I visited, we placed our orders at the counter for steel-cut oats with raisins and the breakfast burrito. The turnaround time was quick, and the food was brought to our table. Our food did not disappoint! The servings were generous and delicious.

What sets The Washburne Café apart is the selection of gift items and a meeting room, available at no extra charge. The Washburne Café caters as well.

They have a wide assortment of light menu options and will create a menu to compliment that special event. For an after-hours event, there is a minimum $250 food purchase, but the use of the facility is free.

The Washburne is a vibrant part of downtown Springfield’s renaissance.

he final lines of Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 1958 poem I Am Waiting read, “I am waiting, perpetually and forever a renaissance of wonder.” The poem appeared in his volume, A Coney Island of the Mind, which to this day remains the single greatest selling volume of American poems. Starting in 1974, for 25 years I carried a hand-scrawled copy of I Am Waiting in my wallet waiting to scatter it to the wind when wonder might indeed arrive.

Though we now controlled our marine resources, we had yet to develop an infrastructure to process them, something the Russians had in abundance.

A creative enterprise allowed American vessels to catch and sell the abundant stocks of hake (a deep-sea cod) to the Soviets, who needed the protein to feed the people back home. The job of observers was to monitor the amounts and varieties of fish caught and verify that prohibited species like salmon, halibut and crab were not

time, I became intimate with its sea life and the influence of its Coquille, Siletz, Siuslaw, Umpqua and other coastal rivers. When the evening fell crystal clear, my Russian friends and I scanned the coast from the deck of the Yuzhnomorsk as town after town launched firework celebrations into the night sky. The fireworks provided a welcome pause in both the harvest of mindblowing tonnages of fish as well as a reprieve from the occasional Cold War tensions aboard the ship.

This was a moment filled with a renaissance of wonder in my personal Coney Island of the Mind.

Shell middens, the Cold War & renaissance of wonder

Mid January 2015, parked with a friend south of Yachats overlooking the Pacific Ocean and sipping Scotch from a steel cup while staring through the windshield at the ocean in a torrential Oregon rain.

I’m thinking about Don Berry’s historical Oregon novel, Trask, and his descriptions of and how impenetrable the coast was in the 1850s, before roads were laid. Beneath us is a massive shell midden, testimony to the diet and habits of native people who for thousands of years gathered and ate their food while staring at the ocean. To the north the incoming tide crashes against the headland, reminding me of an incredible story told to me two years ago by a Coquille tribal elder recounting his great-grandmother’s escape and subsequent swim home to Coos Bay from an internment camp near Tillamook in the 1800s.

She could not use the coastal trails that were guarded by soldiers, so she swam the ocean at night and slept in hiding by day. Remarkable!

Between the ocean and the Scotch, a January day at the Oregon coast is a reliable way to find meditation.

I come here often. Today I drift backward in time.

My first awareness of Lane County came

in the summer of 1979 while serving aboard a Soviet factory trawler for the National Marine Fisheries Service as an observer. The recently enacted Two-Hundred Mile Fishing Boundary obligated any foreign fishing vessels within the new territorial waters to have a U.S. observer aboard to monitor the catch. During an enlightened thaw in the Cold War, Soviet “Mother ships” collaborated with smaller American trawlers out of Oregon ports like Newport, Winchester Bay, Depot Bay, and Florence in what was called The Joint Venture.

WANDERINGS WITH JOEY

On July 4th, 1979, aboard my ship, the Yuzhnomorsk (Russian for South Sea) I stood beneath larger than life portraits of the Soviet Revolutionary Leader and first premier, Vladimir Lenin, who was painted on the massive diesel smokestacks of every Soviet fishing vessel. Yuzhnomorsk sat on the Twelve Mile Line off of Yachats Oregon. Though I didn’t know the land of Oregon at the

A month later, I debarked from the Yuzhnomorsk on to a U.S. Coast Guard rescue vessel gathering my observer cohort from our various ships. After a brutal afternoon of seasickness, we arrived to the Coast Guard station in Charleston, Oregon. Though our orders were to return to Seattle in the most expedient way possible, it was Thursday night with no means of transport available that could get us to Seattle before the NMFS office closed for the weekend. After two months of bobbing around, ground transport was appealing, so I organized a car rental with three others for the drive home. There was a brief moment of anxiety because the summer of 1979 was a time of gas crisis, a product of competing global oil interests that made the gas supply uncertain.

Leaving Charleston the next morning, we drove slowly up 101, stopping frequently to reclaim our equilibrium on solid ground. As it turned out, the threat of shortages had discouraged the normal influx of tourists, so gasoline and vanilla ice cream (a common craving shared by observers) was plentiful. Reaching Florence, we had a meal, coffee and another round of ice cream before diverting inland along the banks of the Siuslaw on Highway 126 to Eugene. That experience, and every experience of the Siuslaw since, has enchanted me. I had no inkling that twelve years later I would move to Lorane, where the Siuslaw begins, and come to know the rivers, mountains, people, history and winter rain of Oregon as intimately as I knew its ocean waters.

Mussels gathered, Scotch finished, the rain abating a little, it’s time to head home until the next favorable tide when the mussels are exposed.

A complete day of wonder. If I had I Am Waiting with me, I would scatter it, but I tossed the original one I carried with me for all those years into a tributary of the Amazon, the Madre De Dios river, in Peru’s rainforest in 1999.

Now, one more stop: ice cream in Florence.

here’s a buzz surrounding the Evergreen Tattoo Invitational, and it’s not just the sound of tattoo needles. Last February’s inaugural convention brought tattoo artists from around the world to Springfield’s Willamalane Center for Sports and Recreation. This year a tattooist from California who wasn’t invited to the 2015 show tried to hack his way in. “He called the company that runs our website pretending to be one of us so he could get the password to log in and add his name to our database,” says Riley Smith, one of the show’s organizers. “He’s been trying to get into our show for nine months.”

“We want it to be like when you get that invitation it’s really something,” says Carlton. “We literally handpick the best artists from around the world.” And visitors don’t come just to get tattooed. Evergreen features educational seminars about artistic techniques, artwork displays, music and food. Last year, Butch Patrick, the original Eddie Munster, was in attendance. They also do have well-known names, such as Jason Clay Dunn, winner of Spike TV’s “Ink Master,” and Paul Booth, from New York, who Nikki describes as “like the Rolling Stones of tattoo.” “As a 24-year veteran tattoo artist, it’s all the things that I wish would happen when I go to conventions,” says Carlton.

This influx of travelers spending cash brought a surge of revenue to Springfield over a 5-day period and compelled the tattoo world to notice what a handful of determined people can do.

The idea for the convention started as a not-so-serious conversation. “We were talking about how Oregon has so much to offer,” says Carlton. “Then Riley went home and he and Erin put together a proposal and presented it to me and it was undeniable. So it went from, ‘That would be kind of cool’ to, ‘We’re doing it!’”

A lot of tattoo shows are open to anyone who pays for a booth, but at Evergreen artists exhibit by invitation only. It’s this pickiness that has given Evergreen its esteem. They invite only the best artists, not necessarily those that are the most well-known.

here are no gaudy, carnival-like displays at Evergreen. “We’re focused more on the art side of it than the novelty,” says Rust. Of course, even the tattooless are welcome at the convention. But those with bare skin may find it hard not to stare at the hard-core tattoo collectors who have transformed their bodies into multi-colored canvases for all manner of artwork.

Carlton is widely known for his expertise in the art of realism, which features portraits, animals or even epic landscapes so detailed they can trick the eye into thinking they’re real.

Tattoos are better now than they’ve ever been— more artistic and safer, because for the most part, they’re applied by serious, highly skilled body artists.

A tattoo renaissance Carlton discovered tattooing when his 18-year-old sister got one. “The tattoo was terrible!” he laughs. “I was a 16-year-old kid and I thought, ‘I can do that.’

I started buying tattoo magazines and got involved but I never expected to be where I am today.” Carlton’s work is sought after, and he wrote the bestselling book on tattooing called Advanced Tattooing Techniques: A Guide to Realism.

People pay a lot of money for tattoos, and art by skilled tattooist is considered highly “collectible,” just like art on canvas. “Students of fine art are realizing that tattooing is a viable option for a career,” says Carlton. “Literally some of the best artists alive today are doing tattoos. That’s what the convention does, it shines a light on what tattoos can be.”

Their business is on an upswing, and Smith sees this as not only an opportunity but a responsibility to invest in the community. “When the economy started coming back I thought, ‘There has to be some way to breath new life into this community because it’s got to come back,” Smith says. “The amount of commerce that we’re bringing to the area is exciting. The influx of cash that we generated staggered me when I saw it.”

When Smith told one of his tattooist friends about the plan for a convention, the friend said no one would come. Not to Springfield and especially not in February. But they did come. Last year artists from 30 states and five countries attended Evergreen and this year three additional states are represented.

This equals substantial revenue for the Oregon health licensing board, which charges $70 for out-of-state licenses. Lisa Lawton, director of community relations at Travel Lane County, calculates an economic impact of $828,360 for the 2015 event, which is expected to be attended by nearly 5,000 people.

an Kuske, general manager at Latus Motors, knows a good partnership when he sees one. “Tattoos and Harley-Davidsons . . . they go together like PB and J,” he says with a laugh. “It’s kind of a no-brainer but it’s not just that, it’s the right culture. The impact for us at the festival was very positive. We sold some bikes that weekend. I’ve had people throughout the entire year come in and tell us, ‘Saw you at Evergreen,’ so it’s paying dividends.”

Outside Lifetime’s window on Main Street is a roughly 80-foot tall Douglas fir tree, a common site in our part of the world. But Smith says one artist from Santa Fe stood at that window just staring at the tree-covered butte in the distance and the “Christmas trees” lining the road. “We don’t think of that here,” says Smith. “He said, ‘It’s like Christmas everyday around here for you.’ That’s pretty unusual for a lot of the people that came here. Everybody fell in love with Oregon.”

Some people browse the store and leave without buying anything, but they’ll mention they saw him at the tattoo fest. “That’s money well spent,” Kuske says, on building relationships with the community and making a connection to people, whether they make a purchase or not. “I can tell you I’ve spent money on other things and other events and not had one person walk in and say, ‘Hey, I saw you at . . . ‘” he says. “That’s why we didn’t hesitate to get involved again this year.”

Guaranty Chevrolet in Junction City and Latus Motors, a local Harley-Davidson dealership, are both big supporters of the tattoo convention. Guaranty will be shuttling exhibitors and attendees from the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels to the venue. Last year, the after parties were held at Hop Valley Brewing Company.

The hotels were full, and Hop Valley was hopping. When tattoo artists finish their day’s work they don’t go home, says Smith. “They go out, and that money goes right back into our economy.”

Smith says he and Rust warned the hotels to be fully stocked for the weekend, and yet, one hotel ran out of beer and sent a cart over to Hop Valley to get a keg. “Oh yeah,” says Hop Valley general manager Cassia Sexton.

“We were busy that weekend.” Hop Valley stayed open later than their normal weekend hours, and Sexton says as soon as the convention closed they filled up and stayed busy.

Because of the event’s success, the venue, too, was cast in the spotlight. “There aren’t a lot of venues around here for events like this, but Willamalane was perfect,” says Carlton. “It was almost like it was designed for our show.”

The building’s 97,000 square feet has seminar space and private meeting rooms where photographers from bigname tattoo magazines could photograph work with nice backdrops. The teen facility, with couches and video game screens, was used as the VIP room. The venue even has a rock-climbing wall.

“It’s such a nice venue,” says Rust. “They were able to accommodate us and it went so well that other events came to them and said, ‘Hey, we didn’t know you could do this, we want to have our event there too!’”

All four of the organizers toiled for nearly a full year and all night setting up the venue before opening day of Evergreen last year. When they saw thousands of people walking around and the tattoo machines started to buzz, they could hardly believe what their hard work had turned into. Carlton says, “I’ve had people come up to me and say, ‘Now that I’ve done Evergreen, everything else is a little lackluster.’”

lastic wrap drawn taut over the evening meal left overs. Clinking, clanking of silverware and dishes being loaded into the dishwasher. To my darling, yet grubby, little boy, bath time is nothing more than playtime in warm water. Most of his grooming occurs with my stealth like, ninja mom, moves. As he pours water from one cup into another, he is oblivious to me scrubbing him from head to between each dirty little toe. I’ve even successfully swirled, Q-tips in both ears. Reaching for his tooth brush, his little eyes are suddenly fixed on watching me. A content boy with his water toys and bubbles, now, a Ferrell cat in a tepid tub. While I’m not sure why the struggle when it comes to brushing his teeth, I am certain it has to be easier to put a dress on a wet fish!

In the dental office I hear moms and dads alike admit to the same story, they don’t feel they are getting their toddlers’ teeth brushed well enough. I’ve been there, I KNOW, sometimes it’s not easy. But the fact is, parents need to stand firm on this issue and be consistent. After all, taking the time while they are very young can save them some, possible unpleasant, time in the dental chair later. In turn, creating healthy oral habits now will save you money in the long run.

Children need to be familiar with a tooth brush long before they even have a visible tooth in their mouths. It’s ok to start brushing your child’s gums before the eruption of their first tooth. You can even allow them to practice with the toothbrush to get familiar with the bristly sensation. Just be sure they are supervised to avoid any accidents. In a high chair, grocery cart, or car seat are all good places to allow practicing.

Of course they won’t be an efficient brusher, as a matter of fact; children don’t fully develop the dexterity to effectively brush their own teeth until about age seven. Allow your child to give brushing their best effort. Just like learning to use eating utensils, it takes practice. With older children and adults, to effectively clean each tooth, it should take about two minutes. This is not going to be accomplished with your wee-one. Consider yourself a success if you can get 30 seconds per arch. If you need help, let the other parent hold the child and distract them while you brush. Try not to overwhelm the tiny taste buds with over powering tooth paste flavors. Minty pastes can be too strong for kids and burn. If it hurts or tastes bad they will most certainly object. After all, as adults, we don’t use what we don’t like. For now, a wet tooth brush is just fine. There are many dentifrices available for children.

When you’re ready to introduce toothpaste, any paste approved by the American Dental Association, ADA, will be safe for your family.

have babies. Because I was 35, I thought it would take a while to conceive, and I was secretly glad I could put it off longer. I got pregnant within a week of getting married. I planned to continue working and put the baby in daycare.

My baby Quinn will sleep alone for a short while, but he relaxes best when sleeping on or next to another human.

Just like that, two of my four pre-pregnancy criteria were shot. Rooted in this community since age 4 with a husband who owns two businesses in the area, moving to find a similar job was not an option. I headed back to therapy and had to depend on my husband. We got new insurance.

itting on the floor in the second bathrobe of the day, my eyes alternate between a blank computer screen and the snoozing time bomb across the room on the bed. I slithered out of the first robe a few minutes ago, hoping my napping baby would fall for it as a scent-imposter of mom, the one seeking time away from him to write my first column for this magazine.

We’ve tried many tricks. He has a crib, an Arm’s Reach Co-Sleeper, a bassinet and two Pack ‘n’ Plays, but he has never fallen asleep in any of them. Baths energize him. Storytime brings out the wiggle worm. When I sing him songs, he listens but doesn’t get sleepy. We’ve tried lights out with him in the crib. He interprets that as a disco trampoline party - and, like so many parties, this one ends in tears.

If he would fall asleep in a contained place,

I could leave him with a monitor. He is not safe alone on the bed, from which he can easily escape.

So here I am on the floor with a keyboard, the wool of the area rug scratching at my calves, trying to figure out what I can tell the world about parenting.

Then he wakes up and crawls toward me with that still-almost-asleep reddish, glazed look in his eyes. He looks mad at me. Does he know I am trying to do something unrelated to caring for him directly? Was the mere attempt to free myself and write an act of betrayal?

I explain that the column will largely be about our adventures together. He can relax, and maybe fall back to sleep, knowing that my world still revolves around him.

He keeps coming at me. ▲

In the column, we will explore predictable topics such as eating, health care, playdates, finding “me time,” changes to social life, whether to let him play with toy weapons, post-childbirth body image, senseless competition among moms, relationships to technology …

“Quinn’s in the plant!” I call out to my husband as I type that line about technology. “He might be eating dirt.”

He is.

I have never been into babies, but I always figured I would be a mom. I waited to reproduce until I was financially independent, had health insurance, was in a stable relationship and had sufficiently worked out most of my childhood issues in therapy.

Then, when I was seven months pregnant, I lost my reporting job.

Serena Markstrom Nugent my forced maternity leave. It is funny, but also kind of not. I didn’t become a stay-at-home-mom by choice.

In this new life I try to remind myself not spend too much time dwelling on grasses that seem greener. Quinn is eight months old, and I can’t imagine my life without him. The cliche about parenting being the hardest job you’ll ever love is already true for me.

I never finish my coffee before it gets cold, yet when I have a moment alone with a mug and the baby is in the other room with his father, I feel like I’m missing something. My wardrobe consists of workout pants, bathrobes and Uggs. I don’t work out and infrequently bathe, but I am pretty sure I do ugg.

In general life is slower. We go for walks. He makes messes with food, toys and his butt. I clean messes. He takes naps, and I’m trapped under him trying to get through a novel, endlessly distracted by my smartphone.

I tell myself To breathe.

To look at things from his perspective.

To take my time.

To have faith that staying home for a while will not ruin my career.

To not write to-do lists.

Sleep seems to be the number one issue for most parents of babies and beyond. Does ours sleep like that because we permitted it, or was he born that way? Is it best for him, or am I being selfish to not be more firm about getting him into his own room? We will never know because you only get one chance with each child, and there is no control child in a parallel universe getting a different parenting experience.

I love my cheerful little sleep-clingy baby.

There is hardly anything more soothing against the angst of not knowing my place in the world than to feel so needed by the ruby-cheeked one, with eyelashes like a tidal wave of angelic, magical glory dust. But am I creating a sleep monster?

My instincts tell me he will sleep alone when he’s ready, and that will come sooner if we don’t force him.

Then sometimes, like today on the floor, I just want to get some stuff done. So I do the motherly thing - and blame myself for everything.

Growing Generations of Food by joanna bartlett When I was about six years old, I helped my mother dig the small vegetable patch in her yard behind the garage. At least, I attempted to help. In reality, my shovel fruitlessly hit clods of hard earth a few times before I stopped to rest and eye the variable English sky.

I

don’t know how she turned the scrubby grass and weeds into rich earth, but I vividly remember the food it produced: tender young zucchini sautéed in butter, gnarly carrots with funny twisted limbs, green beans raw and crisp, eaten straight from the vine as I watched her weed.

I was never much help, but I enjoyed the fruits of her labor. That was probably half the point of my mom gardening in the first place— getting us kids to eat our vegetables—along with some stress relief from life as a divorced mom.

Her garden, small as it was, made a lasting impression. I’ve promptly set up one of my own as the first order of business wherever I’ve lived.

In the North Carolina wilderness I felled trees to make a sunny patch of earth; garden beds built from fallen logs and unearthed rock. At an upstairs upstate New York apartment I hauled salvaged pallets from the public market and a hundred pounds of soil onto my second story deck to build raised beds. When I bought my first house, I hauled it all back down again and turned half the tiny yard into vegetable production.

It’s all been for the same cause as my mother’s garden. I love to put my hands in the earth and grow food. And now that I have kids, I want them to their eat fruits and vegetables, too.

Years ago, I had dreams of living a sustainable life, producing everything I needed on 10 acres of offgrid land. Today, I don’t expect to grow more than a fraction of my family’s food. Our garden consists of four raised beds and a small sunny stretch along one fence. We have a few fruit trees in the front yard and tubs of berries on the deck.

Still, there’s something about creating your own food, no matter how little or how much, from seed to food to compost. Being part of the life cycle keeps me grounded through busy days. Plus, it’s a family tradition I’m passing on to my kids. As I grew them in my belly, I dreamed of the things we’d do together, of the skills and culture I’d pass on from my childhood. I would read to them, teach them to cook and, of course, show them how to grow food.

The first time my son helped me plant green beans my heart soared. He was only a toddler; he grabbed too many seeds at once with his pudgy little hands and they spilled onto the soil. I crouched beside him in the garden, handing them to him one by one as he doggedly poked each one into its hole and gently covered it up.

“We water them now, Mama?” he asked as he stood up, rubbing dirt-covered hands on his pants. His eyes shone with accomplishment as he turned the hose on the newly planted beds.

My growing your food = loving to eat vegetables ploy doesn’t always work. Sometimes the kids won’t eat the food they’ve helped to grow. But more often than not, as they play in the yard, they’ll casually snack on snap peas and kale and gobble up ripe raspberries. When I catch them, I smile. Raising kids is a long game, after all.

While I don’t get out into my vegetable garden as often as I’d like, when I do, the kids often join me. Gardening teaches them a basic survival skill, should they ever need it, and where food comes from—a thing we largely take for granted. It gives me hope for another generation of gardeners. My son, now nine, still likes to plant and eat green beans and my seven-year-old daughter is much better at weeding than I ever was. Hands plunged in the soft dark soil, I feel connected through the earth, to the generations before and after me.

Measure 91 Update

Measure 91, an historic victory for marijuana legalization, took more than two years to organize and was a victory really decades in the making as Oregon has long been a trail blazer in the movement for sensible law reforms. In 1973, Oregon was the first state to decriminalize personal possession of cannabis, while both Oregon and Washington joined California as pioneering medical marijuana states in 1998.

Measure 91, first and foremost, was developed to end the harmful and discriminatory policy of cannabis prohibition. Oregon, despite relative progressive marijuana laws, has been arresting and citing more than 10,000 people every year for marijuana, wasting police resources and unnecessarily hindering the educational and employment opportunities of otherwise law-abiding citizens.

This year, we have already seen a flurry of bills and a list of priorities from former Governor John Kitzhaber that clearly go against the text of Measure 91 and the will of the voters. Bills that would allow cities and counties to arbitrarily tax marijuana and opt-out of licensed retail establishments are counterproductive to curtailing the underground market and go against the priorities of our state and federal government to bring people in to a wellregulated system. Additionally, Kitzhaber’s priorities included merging the medical and Measure 91 systems as

well as decrease the personal possession limits approved by voters.

New Approach Oregon, the political action committee (PAC) responsible for developing Measure 91, is working hard to implement the text of the measure to the will of the voters without drastic changes. There are many basic rules and regulations to implement, including licensing, testing, packaging and keeping marijuana out of the hands of minors. We urge the Oregon Legislature and OLCC to focus on the basics of Measure 91 before making any drastic, unnecessary changes and encourage

Oregon voters to remind politicians and policy makers to implement the will of the voters first and foremost.

Measure 91, learned from two previous attempts to legalize marijuana at the Oregon ballot, taking a more wellregulated, deliberate approach than past legalization attempts. This deliberate approach was one of the reasons we were able to earn more votes than incumbent state officials also on the 2014 ballot and earn a bigger margin of victory than any state legalization measure. While some politicians and interest groups claim that voters didn’t pay attention to the text of Measure 91, but the fact that previous efforts failed to garner a majority demonstrate that voters did indeed pay attention to the details.

Oregon will start accepting license applications for producers, processors, wholesalers and retailers. In the meantime, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) will hold rule-making hearings and we must brave through a legislative session where some legislators may be looking to pass additional rules and regulations. The OLCC is currently conducting a “listening tour” across the state to hear concerns from voters across Oregon ahead of its rulemaking process. The Oregon Legislature has formed the Joint Committee on the Implementation of Measure 91 to consider marijuana-related bills.

Take in a ‘tweener’

at the axe and fiddle

I

’m sitting in the cozy main room of Cottage Grove’s Axe and Fiddle Pub with one of its owners, Bart Caridio. Like the staff and everything else in the pub’s atmosphere, Caridio is relaxed and interesting, graciously sitting with me for a few minutes as the evening’s musicians do their sound check. When I ask him what the founding concept was for the Axe and Fiddle, Caridio laughs and shrugs his shoulders, “I wanted to create a place that I would enjoy and hopefully others would too! It’s a traditional pub, a community gathering place.”

North Dakota born Caridio migrated to Eugene after visiting his brother who was attending the University of Oregon Law School. After North Dakota, he liked the climate for growing things, liked the people and culture so made the move. Caridio, who was one of the creators of Eugene tavern, Sam

Bond’s Garage says, “When I moved to Cottage Grove a lot of people asked me to do something like that here.”

That opportunity happened when the historic main street Burkholder Woods Building came up for sale and with partners, Bran van Appel, Betsy and Hal Hartzel, all whom share a love and vision for Cottage Grove, bought and renovated the attractive building that now houses both the Axe and Fiddle and conjoined neighbor, Kalapuya Books, owned and run by the Hartzels.

St. Patrick’s Day by suzi steffen

So here’s the deal, friends: St. Patrick was a man born in Britain to a wealthy Roman family.

His name in Irish Gaelic was Pádraig, and he died on … you guessed it, March 17.

T

hat’s right, raise a glass of a tasty drink, to the death day of the saint who was born in the year 385 A.D. and then kidnapped at age 16 from his comfy home to be a slave shepherd in Ireland.

When the Irish escaped English rule, fleeing in great numbers to North America during the Potato Famine almost 1400 years later, Irish Catholic immigrants who loved St. Pádraig named their sons after the patron saint of Ireland.

St. Pádraig actually had a rather exciting life, according to stories in Catholic Online and the National Geographic.

No teenager wants to tend sheep forever, of course, so he escaped his Irish captors by finding passage on a pirate ship and heading back to the British part of the British Isles. After reuniting with his family, he eventually spent time in a monastery before his bishop ordered him to go convert the Irish to Catholicism.

There were so many little Paddy boys and Paddy teenagers and Paddy adults that when the anti-Irish police arrested Irish immigrants en masse, they called the police vans “Paddy wagons.” (Meanwhile, Patty is short for Patricia, who was a wonderful saint from Constantinople, but who isn’t the one we’re celebrating on March 17.)

Nat Geo says that the conversion mission was intense: “Patrick’s work in Ireland was tough—he was constantly beaten by thugs, harassed by the Irish royalty, and admonished by his British superiors.” But he preached on, using the shamrock as a way to teach about the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit), until his death in 461.

Whether you’re one of the 34 million U.S. citizens descended from Irish immigrants or a welcome co-partyer, whether you raise a green smoothie or cook traditional corned beef and cabbage or just hit the pubs, always remember that it’s St. Paddy you’re honoring—and shout it out with appropriate Irish pride.

Local Companies Deliver Classics sweeney todd

A

series of events co-sponsored by the Eugene Opera, the Eugene Library, and the Eugene Downtown Merchants will explore the celebrated career of Stephen Sondheim and his award-winning work, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. See exhibits, presentations, films, and more!

Sweeney Todd won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1979. Set in 19th century England, the story is about Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years in a penal colony on trumped-up charges. When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being attacked by the judge that sentenced him, he vows revenge.

The opera is, perhaps, Sondheim’s most popular in a 50-year career in which he won an Academy Award,

eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and the Laurence Olivier Award.

Find the pulse of Fleet Street in Downtown Eugene! The first Friday Art Walk, a guided walking tour, highlights the incredible array of creative businesses including designers, art galleries, dining, furniture makers, jewelers, and antiques. The Oregon Contemporary Theater Delivers a Modern American Classic:

who’s afraid of virginia woolf

E

dward Albee’s funny, brutally humorous play is as sharp and relevant today as it was when it was first performed in New York in 1962. If his other plays put Albee on the map, Virginia Woolf made him a destination point. The ideas in the play regarding American family life and marriage ask the audience to examine the mythologies of modern culture.

The story is set in the New England home of George, associate professor of history, and his wife, Martha, daughter of the college president. Martha has invited Nick, a new hire in the biology department, and his wife, Honey, to their home at 2 a.m. after the faculty party.

And then the fun begins. George and Martha play out their respective dysfunctions, which they’ve honed to a fine art, and Nick and Honey do their best to hang on for the ride. Intimate details, unmet expectations, and resentments fly.

Why this play now? Craig Willis, Oregon Contemporary Theatre’s artistic director and the director for this show, said that actor Dan Pegoda—who’s playing George—and he had been tossing the idea

about since Dan performed in Albee’s The Goat at OCT in 2004. The role of George is a bucket list item for Pegoda, and Willis decided that this year OCT would stage it.

Pegoda says that watching Lyn Burg perform as the iconic Martha (played

by Elizabeth Taylor in the famous filmed version of the play) is worth the price of admission. Willis says that George drives the action of the play. But Nick, the newly hired biology professor (played by Cloud Pemble) has as many lines or more than any other character on stage. And what is going on with his lovely wife Honey, played by Erica Towe?

The show opened on February 20 and runs through March 14. Curtain is 7:30 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. for

Sunday matinees. The show runs two hours and forty minutes, with an intermission. This is a full evening of one of the greatest plays of modern American theater.

The Wines of Spring

T

he weather in Lane County in March can range from warm and sunny to a sleety, wet mix that makes the roads unsafe to the kind of foggy that sends Lane Countians to the bookstore and the fireplace for warm, cozy reading.

And if they’re like many Oregonians, some of the adults in Lane County will be looking for the perfect wines to go with all of those weather conditions.

In Eugene, winesellers say mixed cases—that is, of red, white, and rosé—might be the way to go for the notoriously unreliable month.

At Kiva Grocery on W. 11th and Olive, in Eugene, wine buyer Ziggy Blum says that when the weather is chilly, she still recommends winter wines—the reds that are “big-bodied and hearty, comforting in cold weather,” maybe ones from southern Oregon.

Agate Ridge’s Primitivo fits this profile, she says.

Kiva sells this Eagle Point winery’s product, of course, but it’s also worth a visit to the vineyards themselves— especially if you’re escaping Willamette Valley rain for the sunnier climes near Ashland and Medford.

In the vineyards themselves, the vines are starting to bud out, says Oregon Wine Lab’s Mark Nicholl, who’s also president of the South Willamette Wine Association. Each bud has three shoots, which Nicholl calls “Mother Nature’s defense mechanism” —if one, the primary, gets killed by budding out early and then experiencing a freeze, the secondary one can make what Nicholl calls a less dense wine (the tertiary bud is for survival only).

Nicholl echoes Blum’s recommendation of Sweet Cheeks’ Rosy Cheeks for a sweet rosé. Blum says it’s a fruity rosé “with the taste of spring” that’s available for the first time outside of the Sweet Cheeks Winery this year, in limited quantities. The winery, in one of the most rural parts of Eugene proper, is well worth a visit as well.

Nicholl, who is the winemaker for Rosy Cheeks, says that it’s got a big taste and a “sweet style”—that is, it’s one of the sweeter rosés on the market.

Scott of Sundance Wine Cellars (he prefers not to have his last name in print, but you can easily find him at the south Eugene shop) says that rosés are the drink that people want in the spring, as long as the weather’s nice. “If the sun’s shining, people want to sit on their patios, even if it’s chilly, and drink a rosé,” he says.

He recommends a rosé from the Stanton Vineyards, which is made from pinot noir grapes, or a French rosé from Château de Paraza. The French rosé is made from a mix of syrah, grenache, and mourvèdre grapes and, he says, “has a little more guts and stuffing.”

For whites, Blum recommends more local Oregon wines, including the Brandborg Winery’s Gewürztraminer and Agate Ridge’s Roussane, which she describes as “a heartier, good cold weather white.”

That might sound odd to red wine drinkers—do people drink white wine in the winter and spring?

—but Scott of Sundance says that he has some whites to recommend for this time of year as well.

Of course, Oregon is justly famous for its pinot gris and some chardonnays as well, but he floats the idea that white wine fans might try the less rarely touted pinot blanc.

“There’s a stigma that pinot blanc is rather bland and insipid,” he says, “but in capable hands, it can be anything but.” He recommends the J. Scott Cellars blanc.

eturning to reds for just a minute, our Sundance consultant says that this is a month when people drink “transitional reds”—moving from the bigger winter reds to something lighter for the summer.”

Oregonians will remember the way the 2004 movie Sideways dissed merlot in favor of pinot noir, but now might be the time to return to the maligned wine. “Merlot producers have stuck to their guns and improved their standards,” Scott says.

Preparing for a Natural Disaster

A

little known program available to Oregon residents encourages neighbors to come together and map a disaster preparedness plan to assist them in identifying resources and make informed decisions should a catastrophic event take place. Here in Lane County the most likely disaster would occur in the aftermath of a large earthquake. Rebecca Lamoth, local resident and preparedness advocate, wants to remind residents that if such an event where to occur, your local emergency services will likely not be available for hours, if not days. Our emergency service responders will be understaffed and overworked, their resources stretched thin.

By mapping our neighborhoods we are able to identify skills and equipment each neighbor has that are useful in an effective disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and skills helps your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to the response in a meaningful way. The neighborhood plan for my street includes a Skills and Knowledge list that states who among us for example has, first aid, elder care, electrician, firefighting, crisis communication, and carpentry and plumbing skills. We also have an equipment and supplies list which would make a response more coordinated and supplies readily available following a disaster.

By utilizing the “Building and Disaster Readiness Among Neighbors� workbook, residents will meet together and exchange information including their addresses, contact info, names of each household member, and any special needs that we may need to be aware of to work as a team in the event of a crisis. I feel confident knowing for example that besides cutting my feet on glass (keep shoes next to your bed) the next potentially dangerous event in my neighborhood would most likely be a fire due to a natural gas leak or explosion. All of my neighbors have identified on a map where the shutoff for their natural gas is, team members assigned to gas shutoff will go to each home and shut off in case of emergency. We have identified gathering places and a neighborhood care center which are essential for providing safe harbor and medical care. This exercise has also allowed us to meet our neighbors and enjoy bi-yearly visits as we update our plans.

ike many with a life-long passion for reading, I fell in love with fiction as a child. My passion led me to my completing two degrees in English and a little more than a decade of teaching college freshman writing — but most importantly, more than three decades working as a bookseller.

I learned from my coworkers and customers that my purpose in life would be one of connecting the fiction I loved with the readers who would love the books as well as I did. This led to many wonderful discussions about our shared passions, both in the store and out, as I was also able to connect with publishing sales reps, authors, and other booksellers at our Independent Booksellers Pacific Northwest trade shows. I also met the authors at author appearances sponsored by the Duck Store’s books department. My professions also allowed me to connect with people in other departments, with whom I shared recommendations and passed on books I had read, and it eventually led to my forming and leading a book

group for the store, a group which I have been guiding for 15 years now.

Since my retirement in 2010, the bookstore has allowed me to continue pursuing the heart of my bookseller passion by continuing with said book group as well as contributing staff favorites reviews, which you can find both in the Duck Store books department and also on the blog (literaryduckblog.org).

uring my 30 years of living and working in Eugene, I have developed a further passion for books set in the Northwest. Writers like Molly Gloss have immersed me the historical life of rural Oregon; as Amanda Coplin and Jonathan Evison taught me rural Washington. Brian Doyle’s novels have tremendously enhanced my understanding of and joy in life on the Oregon Coast. To this list, I would like to add two recent books featuring rivers, a constant theme of life in the Pacific Northwest.

the “Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon” and celebrates with a Covered Bridge Festival in September each year. Many of these are on the National Register of Historic Places and can be found along the Cottage Grove Covered Bridge Byway established by the National Department of Transportation in March 2000. Many still carry vehicle traffic attesting to the durability of these historic structures.

Lane County’s remaining covered bridges date from the 1920’s with the most recent bridge (Centennial Bridge in Cottage Grove) built in 1987. Several of these bridges replaced earlier covered bridges that dated back to the early 1880’s and before.

W

hy wooden covered bridges?

Wood was the natural choice for bridge construction because it was abundant and inexpensive at the time.

Many of the primary timbers used to cross the rivers were so large they could not be milled in the sawmills of the time. Instead, these timbers were hauled to the bridge site and hand hewn in place and some still carry the marks of those axes. The bridges were covered purely for economic reasons timbers exposed to the elements rot quickly while timbers that are protected last decades.

Artist Statement from Photographer Bill Leach I like to refer to my type of photography as “historical landscapes.”

As a boy, I had the great opportunity to live with my grandfather for three years of my life and listen to his stories of what life was like growing up in the mine camps of rural Montana.

The town in which he was born is now long gone, a ghost from the past, that has been preserved as a state historical landmark. Even my mother, just one generation ago, was born in a log cabin in rural Montana, a cabin built by my grandfather as a young man.

Their stories of struggles and adventures from that earlier time captured my dreams as a young man and drive my spirit of exploration today.

Red Hills Photography reflects my own personal reverence for a tie to our past—a time when nature was unmanaged and manifested its array of colors and textures in wild abandon; a time when pioneers and native Americans accepted the struggles of a wild and untamed wilderness to build their homes and make their futures.

ou’re having your two-year old’s birthday party in some bird hospital?”

My friend Kat stood in the puddled parking lot of the Cascades Raptor Center and looked around at the wood and wire cages. Shadowy figures perched within. Douglas firs overhead dripped rain. “Where is your daughter?”

“In the clinic.” I stretched my arms around a foilswathed cutting board. Beneath the wrapping lay a white-frosted carrot cake decorated to look like a snowy owl.

Kat followed me up the hill to a blue-roofed building. “What about her friends? Did you rent a bounce house? A magician?”

My friend’s a party-planner, a baker of exquisite cupcakes, a decorator fond of elegance and etiquette.

She had no frame of reference for the room in which she found herself—full of plastic syringes and bottles of medicine and pet carriers and perches. “It smells like fish,” she observed to my toddler, who sat cross-legged on a chair beside a kestrel in its mew.

“What is that . . . a tank full of mealworms?”

“Yeah, move it off the desk so I can put the cake down.”

“No way.” She she regarded my daughter. “Happy birthday . . . I think. Is that a sparrow?”

“Kestrel,” I corrected her. “That’s Puck; he lives here because he has one eye. He’s coming to the party.”

My husband and I adopted Maia from the foster care system five months before she turned two.

We knew from Parenting in Progress classes the importance of surrounding her with loving community. We’d found other friends with two-year olds, attended their parties at gyms and playgrounds complete with musicians and balloon artists and once, a tractor. We’d decided to hold our kid’s birthday celebration where she felt most comfortable—at the raptor center where we helped care for injured birds of prey.

Birthday Partying with Birds of Prey The first months of her life with us, Maia sat in her baby backpack and watched as we tube-fed emaciated hawks and wrapped injured owls’ wings. She played on a blanket on the lawn while we trained owls for educational presentations. “This is her favorite place in the world,” I told Kat. “A birthday party needs a theme,” she countered.

“It has one—snowy owls.”

I’d constructed the cake. We’d invited volunteers to party in the clinic on their breaks. Maia held court in her prettiest skirt, a bag of toilet paper rolls on her lap.

“What about games?” Kat asked.

I cut triangles into the paper roll Maia handed me.

“We’re making owl enrichment toys. We stuff them with alpaca wool and mealworms.

“You’ve gotta be kidding.”

Rain pounded down on the clinic roof. She looked out the window. “I don’t think anyone’s coming.”

N

ow, I saw the scene through her eyes—my two-year old perched on a chair, squirming mealworm in hand, beside a maimed kestrel.

The only music came from the rustling of birds recovering in pet carriers. No Pin the Tail on the Donkey, no swag bags full of candy.

Had I failed as a mother during this first birthday party?

I gripped Jonathan’s hand. “No one’s coming.”

Then, a car sloshed up the long driveway. An elderly volunteer ducked through raindrops to the clinic.

“Happy birthday, kiddo!” She handed Maia a handmade quilt—snowy owls on a blue background.

Another volunteer pushed through the door with a vulture tethered to her arm. Maia gazed up at the bird and clapped her hands. “Hello, vul-tur.”

Now, the assistant director presented her gift—a four-inch snowy owl toy clipped to a child-sized bird-handling glove she’d sewed.

“Happy birthday, girl.” We turned see the real snowy owl’s handler step in with the two-foot bird on her arm.

Kat’s eyes went wide at the sight of his white feathers, his round fluffy head, the huge feathered feet.

“This,” she whispered, “is better than a magician.”

It’s easy to buy into an idea of what a kid’s birthday party is supposed to look like. But all sorts of families celebrate in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways. I like to think that when my daughter looks at photos of this day, she’ll appreciate—along with the oddity—the adoration evident on the faces around her.

“Mama?” She set down her toilet paper roll. “Cake now?”

W

e sang happy birthday while the kestrel chirped. Maia grinned up at us and stuffed carrot cake into her mouth. Kat regarded her, surrounded by owl toys and books and the quilt and the birds. “It’s strange,” she conceded, “but it works.”

I held out a chipped plate. “Want some cake?”

She sat down next to the mealworm tank. “You bet.”
