The Bridge Community Church
ARC 451 Fall 2024
The Bridge Community Church of Elgin seeks to create a space that communicates openness both to the community and the church members while still remaining rooted in the faith and truth of the gospel. The vertical relationship between God and humankind is the principle driver of the design. The sanctuary reaches up toward the Creator above in the very place where God and his people meet.

Site Response
The church occupies the corner on National St., addressing downtown Elgin to the north and the suburban community to the south. The design completes Clock Tower Plaza, keeping the center open to the Fox River and allowing the shopping center to breathe. The design is proudly on the corner to communicate the church’s presence within the community of Elgin.
Materiality
Stone and metal panel cladding give the facade a heavy and durable contrast to the soaring glue-laminated beams found in the Sanctuary, Lobby and Gym. These natural materials, in combination with the strength of the metal panels, allows for a sleek design with traditional materials.

The experience of the Sanctuary is apparent from the threshold as the ceiling plane is brought low and continued to the summit of the space. This gives a compressing effect as you walk between two stone masses to cross the threshold and release as you enter the soaring height of the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary consists of two main roof planes reaching heavenward and letting in light from above. These are supported by a structural system of glue-laminated beams and steel braces giving the sanctuary a sense of wonder and awe.

Lahaina Memorial
ARC 352 Spring 2024
The design seeks to protect and hold sacred the memory and pain of the city of Lahaina, Hawaii in the aftermath of the 2023 fire, while also tying back to the roots and history of Lahaina by using traditional Hawaiian architectural grammar. The proposal does this by establishing several layers of strong walls that give the memorial a sacred place in the site, protecting it from the outside and connecting it to the peace of the ocean. The design seeks to provide the solitude and respect deserved by those who perished in the fires.

By using wood and volcanic stone, the memorial employs sustainable materials to frame views of the ocean in both the interior spaces and the contemplative space which displays the names of the one hundred victims.

Palazzo Della Rotunda
ARC 352 Spring 2024
Designed for the Piazza Della Rotunda in Rome, and adjacent to the Pantheon, the design engages the piazza using a loggia. The facade seeks to respond to the Pantheon. It does this by fitting into the context

West Dundee Public Library
ARC 351 Fall 2023
The downtown of West Dundee finds little peace due to the truck route that runs through the center and the non-stop bustle of traffic. This has driven the community from its own center to escape the chaos. The city needs a revitalization for its downtown and a response to the detriment caused by the highway
To respond to the lack of draw to the downtown and the loud noise of the highway, the design seeks to bring the community in the Dundee area together as it provides an experiential shelter from the chaos of the high traffic and busyness of downtown Dundee. The user is invited to enter a cave-like entry that opens into an expansive space protected from the noise.

Through the entry sequence, the user is compressed by multiple layers of enclosure. After entry, the compression releases and the user is compelled into the expansive atrium from which one is encouraged to further explore the other areas of the library. Material choices reflect this using limestone for the west facade, while glass and wood louvers cover the rest of the building, expressing an airy expanse of space.

Farnsworth House Addition
ARC 251 Fall 2022
Tasked with the improbable goal of creating an addition to Mies Van Der Rohe’s masterwork The Farnsworth House, this studio project was focused on graphite representation of project work.
The addition is a continuation and partner to the Farnsworth’s ethereal experience by extending the suspension within nature to the water. As the river rises and falls, the addition is pure and steadfast. The Farnsworth is suspended over the land, looking out at the water. The addition is suspended over the water, looking back at the land. This creates unity between the water and land in one complete experience.

Study Tour Field Sketches
ARC 381 Summer 2024
In the Summer of 2024 we embarked on a four-week sketching study tour in Italy and Eastern Europe. We visited architectural monuments, toured important buildings and engaged in the local cultures. We sketched in Rome, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Brno, and Budapest. In each city, I capitalized on our visit by sketching and watercoloring as much as possible.
