LANDSKRONA FOTO FESTIVAL 2018 14–23 SEPTEMBER
Fotokonsten blir en del av stadsmiljön; i parkerna och affärerna, samtidigt som den intar de kulturella finrummen. Kärleken till fotografiet, engagemanget och satsningen på Landskrona som fotostad når sitt crescendo på förhösten. 2018 års festivalprogram visade 25 utställningar från konstnärer från fler än 30 länder. Nya eller etablerade, alla var de en del av en festival där vi med vitt skilda former av fotografi vill skapa en spännande och visuell scen. En scen från vilken vi skrapar på den triviala ytan, rör upp känslor, provocerar. Under tio dagar, inomhus och utomhus, delade tusentals besökare nya och innovativa visuella upplevelser utifrån ämnen som planetens förstörelse och dess katastrofala effekter, ojämlikheter mellan kvinnor och män, identitet, självrepresentation och migration. Fotograferna rör sig i världar där andra varit tidigare, men där få uppvisat lika stark envishet och nyfikenhet. 2018 ägde ägde Landskrona Foto Festival rum för sjätte gången. Och vi tog ännu ett steg närmare vår ambition att skapa en så socialt medveten plats som möjligt för fotografin; en plats som utgör fokus för såväl konst- som dokumentärfotografi, inte bara i Sverige utan i Skandinavien och Europa. Vi är glada och tacksamma för alla medverkande konstnärer vi lyckats samla, för alla möten vi skapat och för varje festivalbesökare vi lyckats beröra, inspirera, upplysa eller omstörta. LANDSKRONA FOTO
Festivalen är Landskrona Fotos fyrtorn, den årliga mötesplatsen kring fotografi för professionella och för den foto- och konstintresserade allmänheten i norra Europa. Festivalens mål är att visa nya och spännande utställningar som tidigare inte setts i liknande sammanhang. Viktigt är också att fotografiet ska manifesteras i det offentliga rummet; i allt ifrån butiksfönster till parker och gamla byggnader. Att det blir en märkbar del i att uppleva staden. Men Landskrona Foto är mer än så. Det är samlingsnamnet för en ambition att skapa ett kraftfullt centrum för den fotografiska bilden som spänner över områden som bevarande, fotohistoria, forskning, utbildning och utställningar. Vi hade glädjen att under festivalen inviga både nya utställningslokaler och en biograf i vårt nyrenoverade kulturskyddade Tyghuset, en 1800-tals byggnad placerad mitt emot Landskrona Museum. I Tyghuset kommer vi de kommande åren att etablera Landskrona Fotos fotografiska center. Ett center för svensk fotohistoria och samtida fotokonst, ett fotoboksbibliotek, tillfälliga fotografiska utställningar och olika möjligheter för research inom fotografin.

Gideon Mendel har dedikerat sin långa karriär till att belysa ämnen som hiv/ aids, apartheid och klimatförändringar. Det är mänsklighetens ödesfrågor som Mendel återkommer till, situationer där människans villkor ställs på sin spets. Mendels fotografi bygger på aktivism, tålamod och långsiktigt engagemang. Med en estetik som går i dialog med nordiska folksagor, myter och legender – med fantasi och berättelse – vill de båda konstnärerna göra seendet större och visa på förmågan att inta fler och för oss oväntade perspektiv. I porträttten vävs människan in i naturen, den vi alla kommer ifrån, lever av och ska återgå till. Hjorth och Ikonens arbete är en bön om ett helande i relationen mellan människa och natur. A SELECTION OF WORKS RANIA MATAR (US)
Rania Matar skildrar mänsklig sårbarhet under övergångsperioder i kvinnor och barns liv. Hennes fotografi undersöker identitet och hur jaget påverkas av kontext och kultur. Matar föddes 1964 i Libanon men flyttade till USA 1984. Utifrån sin dubbla bakgrund, den palestinska hon fick med sig och den amerikanska som hon tillägnat sig, beskriver Matar vilka vi är i vår tid.

FILLES DE L’EST MARIANNE MARIĆ (FR)
Filles de l’Est (Flickor fran öst) är en personlig bildserie tagen med ett innanför-/utanförperspektiv. Marićs far, och hans halva av släkten, är från Bosnien. År 2012 kom Marić till Sarajevo för att inneha ett fotoresidens vid ett konstgalleri. Då påbörjades arbetet med serien, som är ett pågående projekt, där Marić porträtterar flickor och kvinnor från forna Jugoslavien. Marić kom till ett sargat Bosnien och Hercegovina, ett land under återuppbyggnad vars smärtsamma förflutna hon delade. COUNTRY OF AMBITION YAN MING (CN)
Det är de vanliga människorna Ming vill skildra, deras ambitioner och liv i en nationell kontext; i de tablåer han fångar händer lite, men avslöjas desto mer. Kinas unika historia, dess befolkning, natur och traditioner är de motiv han söker. Fotografierna är vackra, de balanserar det förflutna och framtiden, det enkla och det komplicerade, det dokumentära och det surrealistiska. VALPARAÍSO ANDERS PETERSEN (SV), ALBERTO GARCÍA-ALIX (ES)
Anders Petersen och Alberto García-Alix var åren efter varandra, 2014 respektive 2015, innehavare av residens för Valparaísos internationella fotofestival. Petersen och García-Alix är två av världens mest namnkunniga och prisbelönta fotografer. De är sprungna ur olika kulturer och har olika temperament men också flera likheter. Landskrona Foto Festival presenterade de fotografiska essäer Petersen och García-Alix skapade under vistelser i Valparaíso.

I cirka två månader, fördelat på tre perioder: maj och september 2017 och april 2018, bodde den spanska fotografen Carlos Alba i vår stad och arbetade från studion på Fröfabriken Creative Space. Alba är den tredje mottagaren av Landskrona Foto Residens. Stadens fotoresident väljs noga ut och bjuds in för att skildra Landskrona ur sitt eget särskilda utifrånkommande perspektiv. Under utställningsnamnet ”The Taste of The Wind” presenterade Alba vad han upptäckte och såg i Landskrona. TRACES WERONIKA GĘSICKA (PL)
I projektet Traces arbetar Gęsicka med spåren efter den amerikanska familjeidyllen,som den skildrades på 1950- och 60-talet. Är det på riktigt eller är det på låtsas? Konstnären har köpt de flesta av originalfotografierna hon arbetat med från en bildbank. Genom att manipulera bilderna har Gęsicka lagt ett lager av fiktion på det som tycks oss dokumentärt. ANES SITU OCH HOLES HICHAM BENOHOUD (MA)
Hicham Benohoud utbildade sig i bildkonst. Innan han blev konstnär på heltid undervisade han i teckning och måleri på skolor i födelsestaden Marrakech. I sitt arbete prövar Benohoud rumslighet. Han vänder upp och ner på vardagen och har systematiskt i sin karriär skapat ovanliga scener genom att kombinera det vanliga. Resultatet är surrealistisk och bisarrt, ibland skrämmande och ibland roligt. Att Landskrona Foto varje sommar presenterar ett annat lands fotografi i en stor utställning har blivit en stabil tradition. 2018 kom turen till ett latinamerikanskt land och valet föll på Chile. Med Chile har Sverige flera beröringspunkter. Båda länderna är geografiskt avlånga med placering lite i utkanten

av respektive kontinent. Samtidigt är naturligtvis skillnaderna stora – socialt, kulturellt och politiskt – och detta visar sig i Chiles fotografiska tradition. A WAY AWAY – SWEDISH PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPLORE THE WORLD 1862–2018
Här visas bildberättelser födda ur nyfikenhet, intresse, dyrkan, slump, övertygelse, förrättning, tvång och studiesyfte. Fotograferna var där – ibland av en ren tillfällighet, ibland efter målmedvetna, strapatsrika resor på tusentals mil. De var borta över natten, i månader, ibland för återstoden av livet. Utställningen genomfördes i samarbete med Nordiska museet. CLAES LEWENHAUPT STIPENDIAT 2017 OBSERVATÖREN EMANUEL CEDERQVIST (SV)
Cederqvists verk kretsar kring tid som kommer och går: historia, förgänglighet, det människan vinner och det vi förlorar, den fotografiska bildens nära relation till våra minnen. 1914 stod den väderstation Cederqvist utgått från klar; uppförd av Axel Hamberg, professorn i geografi, som hade för avsikt att kartlägga Sarek. På grund av platsens svårtillgänglighet hade stationen stått orörd i över hundra år och mätinstrumenten var kvarlämnade när Cederqvist kom dit. 2017 vann Anna Ehrenstein ”Landskrona Foto and Artproof Portfolio of the Year Award” med serien Tales of lipstick and virtue. Seriens bilder handlar om äkthet: Vad är autenticitet? Gör lösnaglar, kroppsimplantat eller löshår oss till fejk? Eller är det kanske tvärtom? Kan en överdrift av idealen ses som en motståndshandling? Med humor och öppenhet bryter Ehrenstein ner skönhetsnormer i sina beståndsdelar. Äkthet och fejk tycks flyta samman. OPEN CALL: SO FAR (Utställning i butiksfönster)
Imponerande 970 fotografer från 78 representerade länder världen över ansökte till Landskrona Foto: Open Call under våren. I skyltfönsterutställningen placerades 50 fotografier ut i butiker, hotell och restauranger runt om i Landskrona centrum. Temat för Open Call var ”hittills” och i juryn ingick bildredak-

Landskrona Foto & Breadfield Dummy Award, ett pris som instiftades 2015, tilldelas under Landskrona Foto Festival den fotograf som har den mest intressanta fotoboksidén. Priset innebär att den utsedda fotografen får sitt ”dummyprojekt” utgivet. Boken blir tryckt, formgiven och distribuerad. Dessutom får fotografen en större andel böcker för egen försäljning. Landskrona Foto Festival har gått av stapeln sex gånger och vuxit från ett småcharmigt sensommarevent vid havet till att räknas som en de mest angelägna fotofestivalerna i norra Europa, med ett rikt utbud av seminarier, föreläsningar och event vid sidan av utställningar inomhus och utomhus. Nu förvandlar vi festivalen till en biennal. För att kunna överträffa oss själva, sett mot bakgrund av såväl stadens stora övergripande fotografiska ambition som avsikten att på sikt erbjuda en av världens viktigaste och mest lustfyllda fotofestivaler, kommer innevarande år att präglas av ett intensivt strategi- och planeringsarbete. Festivalen återkommer således med förnyad kraft 2020, utökad i tid till tre veckor i september och med ännu fler kvalitativa utställningar, seminarier och evenemang – samt ytterligare förstärkt position som den fotografiska kultursfärens definitiva mötesplats. Vi tackar festivalens två avgående konstnärliga ledare sedan tre år tillbaka. Jenny Nordquist har tillträtt som chef för Landskrona Foto. Christian Caujolle, som kom från Paris till Landskrona med banbrytande idéer både kring vad fotografi bör vara och hur fotografi kan ställas ut, har med sina långa internationella erfarenheter som curator varit en viktig förutsättning för festivalens spirande rykte utanför Sverige.

The art of photography becomes a part of the urban environment, in the parks and the shops, while simultaneously occupying the sanctuaries of fine culture. The love of photography, the commitment and drive to make Landskrona a photo city, reaches its crescendo during ten days in September. The 2018 festival programme showed 25 exhibitions of artists from more than 30 countries. Emerging or established, everyone was part of a festival where we seek to create an exciting and visual scene. A stage where we scrape away the mundane surface, stir emotions and provoke discussions. For ten days, indoors and outdoors, thousands of visitors shared new and innovative visual experiences, embracing topics such as the destruction of the planet and its catastrophic effects, inequalities between men and women, identity, self-representation, and migration. The exhibiting photographers move in worlds where others might have been before, but few have attained the same level of tenacity and curiosity. In 2018, Landskrona Foto Festival took place for the sixth time. This year we moved one step closer to our ambition of creating a socially aware place for photography. A place that is the focal point for art and documentary photography not just in Sweden, but in all of Scandinavia and Europe. LANDSKRONA FOTO
The festival is Landskrona Foto’s beacon, the annual meeting point for professional photographers and for the photo- and art-interested public in Northern Europe. The festival’s goal is to display new and exciting photography that has not previously been shown in similar contexts. It’s also important for photography to manifest itself in public spaces, from shop windows to parks and old buildings, and become a perceptible part of experiencing the city. But Landskrona Foto is more than this. It is the umbrella name for a firm resolve to create a powerful centre for the photographic image, ranging over fields such as preservation, the history of photography, education and exhibitions. During the festival we had the joy of being able to inaugurate the new exhibition spaces and a film theatre in our renovated Tyghuset, a sensitively preserved nineteenth-century building situated opposite Landskrona Museum. During the coming years Tyghuset will be the place where Landskrona Foto’s photographic centre is established: a centre for the history of Swedish photography and contemporary photography, a photobook library, temporary photographic exhibitions and various possibilities for research on photography.

Gideon Mendel has dedicated his long career to elucidating topics such as HIV/AIDS, apartheid and climate change. He keeps returning to fateful issues for humanity, extreme situations for the human condition. Mendel’s photography is based on activism, patience and long-term commitment. With an aesthetic that engages in dialogue with Nordic folktales, myths and legends – with imagination and narrative – the two artists seek to expand our vision and demonstrate the potential to adopt multiple and unexpected perspectives. In the portraits, humans are woven into nature, which we all come from, which we live off and to which we shall return. Hjorth and Ikonen’s work is a prayer for healing in relations between mankind and nature. A SELECTION OF WORKS RANIA MATAR (US)
Rania Matar depicts human vulnerability during periods of transition in the lives of women and children. Her photography explores identity and how the self is influenced by context and culture. Matar was born in Lebanon in 1964 but moved to the USA in 1984. On the basis of her dual background, Matar describes who we are in our time.

FILLES DE L’EST MARIANNE MARIĆ (FR)
Filles de l’Est (Girls of the East) is a personal picture series taken with an insider/outsider perspective. Marić’s father, and his half of the family, come from Bosnia. In 2012 Marić arrived in Sarajevo to take up a photo residence at an art gallery. This was when she started working on the series, still an ongoing project, where Marić portrays girls and women from the former Yugoslavia. Marić came to a badly scarred Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country undergoing reconstruction, with a painful past that she shared. COUNTRY OF AMBITION YAN MING (CN)
Ming seeks to depict ordinary people, their ambitions and lives in a national context; in the tableaux that he captures, not much is happening but a great deal is revealed. China’s unique history, its population, nature and traditions are the motives he looks for. The photographs in the series are beautiful, balancing the past and the future, the simple and the complicated, the documentary and the surrealistic. VALPARAÍSO ANDERS PETERSEN (SV), ALBERTO GARCÍA-ALIX (ES)
Anders Petersen and Alberto García-Alix were the holders in successive years, 2014 and 2015, of the residency at the international photo festival in Valparaíso. Petersen and García-Alex are two of the world’s most famous award-winning photographers. They have their origin in different cultures and they differ in temperament, but there are also similarities between them.

For about two months, divided into three periods, May and September 2017 and April 2018, the Spanish photographer Carlos Alba lived in our town and worked from his studio at Fröfabriken Creative Space. Alba is the third recipient of Landskrona Foto Residency. The town’s photo resident is carefully selected and is invited to depict Landskrona from his or her special outsider perspective. Under the title “The Taste of The Wind”, the exhibition presented what Alba saw and discovered in Landskrona. TRACES WERONIKA GĘSICKA (PL)
In the project Traces Gęsicka works with the vestiges of the American family idyll, as it was depicted in the 1950s and 1960s. Is it real or make-believe? The artist has bought most of the original photographs she works with from an image bank. By manipulating the images, Gęsicka has added a layer of fiction to what seems to us to be documentary. ANES SITU AND HOLES HICHAM BENOHOUD (MA)
Benohoud trained in art, and before he became an artist full-time he taught drawing and painting at schools in the city of his birth, Marrakesh. In his work Benohoud explores spatiality, turning everyday life upside down, and in his career he has systematically created unusual scenes by combining ordinary things. The result is surrealistic and bizarre, sometimes frightening and sometimes amusing. Each summer, Landskrona Foto presents another country’s photographic history in an exhibition which has become a firm tradition. In 2018 it was the turn of a Latin American country, with the choice falling on Chile. Sweden and Chile have a lot in common. Both countries are geographically elongated and

located on the edge of their respective continents. At the same time, there are of course major differences – socially, culturally and politically – as demonstrated by Chile’s photographic tradition. A WAY AWAY – SWEDISH PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPLORE THE WORLD 1862–2018
Exhibited here are pictorial histories born out of curiosity, interest, devotion, conviction, business, duty, compulsion and for study purposes. The photographers were there – sometimes purely by chance, sometimes after singleminded and arduous journeys of thousands of miles. Sometimes they stayed away for a night, sometimes for months on end, sometimes for the rest of their lives. The exhibition was presented in collaboration with the Nordic Museum in Stockholm. CLAËS LEWENHAUPT SCHOLARSHIP 2017 OBSERVATÖREN EMANUEL CEDERQVIST (SV)
Cederqvist’s work revolves around time that comes and goes: history, perishability, what we win and what we lose, and the close relationship of the photographic image to our memories. The weather station that Cederqvist visited was completed in 1914, built by Axel Hamberg, professor of geography, whose intention was to map Sarek. Because the place was so inaccessible, the station had been untouched for over a hundred years and the measuring instruments had been left there when Cederqvist arrived. LANDSKRONA FOTO AND ARTPROOF PORTFOLIO OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017 TALES OF LIPSTICK AND VIRTUE ANNA EHRENSTEIN (DE)
In 2017 Anna Ehrenstein won the Landskrona Foto and Artproof Portfolio of the Year Award with the series “Tales of Lipstick and Virtue”. The pictures in the series are about authenticity: What is it? Do false nails, body implants or false hair make us fake? Or is it the opposite? Can an exaggeration of the ideals be viewed as an act of resistance? With a humorous and open attitude, Ehrenstein breaks down norms of beauty into their constituent parts, causing authenticity and fake to merge together.

Landskrona Foto: Open Call received an impressive 970 applications from 78 different countries. Fifty images were placed throughout Landskrona city centre in the windows of its shops, hotels and restaurants. The theme of the Open Call was “So Far” and the jury consisted of Emma Bowkett, Director of Photography at Financial Times FT Weekend Magazine, the curators of Landskrona Foto Festival Jenny Nordquist and Christian Caujolle, and the Swedish photographer Simon Berg. FUTURE
Landskrona Foto Festival has been held six times and has grown from being a charming and relaxing little summer event by the seaside, to be reckoned as one of the most important photo festivals in northern Europe, with a wide range of seminars, lectures and events alongside exhibitions both indoors and outdoors. Now we are making the festival a biennial event. To be able to excel ourselves, against the background of the city’s grand overall photographic ambitions and the aim of becoming, in the long term, one of the world’s most important and most pleasurable photo festivals, the coming year will be filled with intensive work on strategy and planning. The festival will thus be back in 2020 with renewed strength, extended to three weeks in September and with even more high-quality exhibitions, seminars and events – and an even stronger position as the definitive meeting place for national photography. We thank the festival’s two artistic directors who are leaving the position they have occupied for three years. Jenny Nordquist has become director of Landskrona Foto. And with his long international experience as a curator, Christian Caujolle has been an important factor in the growing reputation of the festival outside Sweden. He came from Paris to Landskrona with pioneering ideas about of what photography should be and how photography can be exhibited.

MINNE / MEMORY Subst, minne-n. M. betecknar en hågkomst av ett objekt, el. något som sagts eller ägt rum. Exempel: ”Mina minnen av Landskrona Foto Festival förstärktes för varje år festivalen återkom.” Paradox: ”Ett löftesrikt minne” (d.v.s. den konJfr med: ”En löftesrik festival.” Även: ”Baserat på minnet av sex års fotofestivaler [enskilt betraktade] torde minnet av Landskrona Foto Festival 2020 [med tanke på uppehållet under 2019] att bli dubbelt så starkt.” Noun, memory, pl. memories. A memory is something you remember, an object or something that was said or took place. Example: “My memories of Landskrona Foto Festival became stronger for every year the festival recurred.” Paradox: “A promising memory” (i.e. the conditional uncertainty in the concordance between past and future). Cf. “A promising festival.” Also: “Based on the memory of six years of photo festivals [considered individually] the memory of Landskrona Foto Festival 2020 [in view of the pause during 2019] will be twice as strong.”
