Sharrow School Sitwell Road, Sheffield, S7 1BE The new junior and infant school building was designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape of Mount Pleasant Park, and to make a bold statement about the school’s commitment to sustainability.

Each classroom has access to outside space, daylight and natural ventilation as well as innovative opportunities for outdoor play, linking recreation to learning.

Humanities Research Institution, the University of Sheffield, Douglas Knoop Centre 34 Gell Street, Sheffield, S3 7QY The Douglas Knoop centre has a flat lawned roof which is designed to soften the presence of the contemporary structure and compliment the delicate neatness of the existing Georgian architecture.

The intensive lawned roof has a substrate depth of approximately 450mm which is built on to a concrete roof. The aesthetics of the green roof are driven by function with passive ventilation units radiating the area and a central circular glazed roof light present to allow light into the space below.

Seating areas are placed adjacent to ventilation units providing a social use for the garden.

Jessop West building, University of Sheffield 34 Leavygreave Road, Sheffield, S3 7RD In January 2009 the Jessop West building became the new home to the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, the Department of History and the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics. Designed by innovative Berlin Architects Sauerbruch Hutton, the eco-friendly building is a model of sustainability, with many features built into the design to maximise energy efficiency and make the best use of natural light.

The whole building has in excess of 80% green roof cover, using highly screened demolition waste and loam as a growing medium. The green roofs and rainwater drainage are monitored as part ongoing PhD and Masters research.

Sir Robert Hadfield – Green Roof Centre Demonstration Site Mappin Street, Sheffield, S1 3JD The Sir Robert Hadfield building is home to the Engineering Materials Department and on Floor E is the Green Roof Centre Demonstration Site. The 500m2 area is designed to show the diverse and varied opportunities and possibilities that green roofs can bring to an urban environment. Varying depths and recipes of substrate are used throughout the site, providing a range of common green roof build-ups. Plant specification and layout was designed by Dr Nigel Dunnett and planted by volunteer students and Green Roof Centre staff. In the centre of the roof is the Information Lodge, designed and built by Handspring Design from green oak and larch. The Lodge is green roofed with Lindum Turf’s ‘Green Roof Mix’ pre-grown mats, and houses green roof displays and real-time data logging from the on-site research.

WEST ONE Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4JJ Completed in July 2004, the scheme comprises 450 private residential apartments varying between 6 and 11 storey's, together with 7500 sqm (80,000 sq.ft.) of leisure/retail facilities and 200 car parking spaces located within the basement. The building creates a series courtyard spaces both private and public. The apartments proved to be so desirable that 95% were sold prior to completion. The green roofs are situated in three locations; the main high level roofs above retail developments, lower courtyard spaces and above undercroft parking areas.

Marie Curie Research Roof – Hicks Building, University of Sheffield Hounsfield Road, Sheffield, S3 7RH

Project Name: Green Roof Systems Project, Research Roof, Hicks Building, University of Sheffield Year: 2010 - 2013 Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK Roof Description: 450 trays arrange into blocks of 9 or 12, most blocks have 3 depths of substrate @ 50mm, 100mm, 150mm. Each tray has between 12 and 28 species of plant randomly distributed across mapped stations.
