Landscape THE INDUSTRY TRADE SHOW

As part of LANDSCAPE’s ongoing commitment towards uniting the industry and enhancing the professional qualifications of it’s practitioners, all of the seminars at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show will qualify for CPD learning points. This accreditation means that attending any of the Seminar Sessions hosted in all theatres now counts towards delegates’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

YOU CAN GAIN UP TO 11 POINTS AT LANDSCAPE SHOW!

CPD is defined as ‘a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional competence’ and organisations that are granted membership by the CPD Certification Service must clearly demonstrate expertise in their field and provide a place for industry to turn to for advice and guidance. LANDSCAPE which opens in Battersea Park, London on the 18th of September 2018, will be running an extensive free two-day seminar programme. The full programme will be available to view online nearer the time of the show at www.landscapeshow.co.uk. On achieving CPD certification for the programmes, Event Director Jeremy Storey-Walker says: “We are delighted to offer visitors to LANDSCAPE the broadest range of free and relevant content delivered by some of the highest-level experts in the industry. We believe this exciting offer is enhanced further through the ability of delegates at these presentations to credit their attendance towards their CPD.” “Being accepted as a member of the CPD Certification Scheme also reinforces the quality of LANDSCAPE’s seminar programme and the real value that delegates can gain from attending these sessions.”

Attendees will receive their Certificates of Attendance at the end of each session they attend. Register for your FREE tickets to attend by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk

AIPH

RAINBOW PROFESSIONAL Rainbow Professional has developed a new Formulated Buckle Tree Tie, which is a new softer formulation, making for a more forgiving tree tie. The original Rainbow Buckle Tree Tie dates back to the 1960’s and is still the most widely used type of tree tie owing to its simplicity and reliability. The tie itself consists of a belt, buckle and collar which means the belts can be slackened by the buckle as the tree matures with no damage to the tree tie and should last in excess of 10-12 years. They can even be re-used if necessary and recycled when required. A full range of sizes are available covering small roses and shrubs to semi mature trees. The buckle is made from polycarbonate which is incredibly resilient and able to withstand high wind loads that can be applied to the middle of the buckle. The belt is made from a soft PVC which allows some stretch to give the tree movement, helping the tree develop its own resistance to wind. The collar fits between the stake and tree, so preventing rubbing of the stake. Little on-going maintenance is required with inspections at just under 2 years. Hoop Collars are used to prevent the tree and stake rubbing together which can cause damage to the tree. Sold in three different sizes 1.3cm, 2.5cm and 3.8cm and supplied in conjunction with all Buckle Tree Ties but can be purchased separately. Come down to Battersea Park this September to meet the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE!

Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future and we are happy to be supporting the event for another year.

HEDGES DIRECT Hedges Direct are proud to have supported Shin Myungja in April’s RHS Flower Show Cardiff in which she won the bronze award for her ‘The Reflection in the Past Garden’. Shin contacted Hedges Direct about the project and explained her vision, to create a garden that reflected aspects of her childhood past in Korea. Shin was keen to utilise hedging of different species and aesthetics to create both boundary and structure within the garden. Very eager to support Shin, Hedges Direct were able to supply some high quality Box Hedging (Buxus Sempervirens) to add low formal structure to the garden and Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata) instant hedging troughs to create a green boundary wall, framing the space. The pot grown box plants provided for Shin’s garden are the perfect hedging solution for low level framing or borders in gardens whilst potted hedge plants in general are ideal for use in Summer as they are available during the warmer months when bare roots and root balls aren’t in season. The Western Red Cedar hedging provided was in the form of instant hedging troughs of 1m length and at 150-175cm high. These mature hedging troughs provide a superb option for creating instant impact for boundary screening or partitions in a larger garden, as the plants have knitted together giving the appearance of a fully established hedge that would take up to 5 years to achieve from potted plants. To find out more visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September!

MATTEINI TRANQUILLO At Matteini Tranquillo Nursery, the passion for their job and the continued research into the world of green, leads owners to continually grow new plants that are studied to be beautiful, resistant to diseases and with an increasingly positive environmental impact. The special selection of a new cultivar of Cupressus sempervirens, named Cupressus sempervirens ‘Matteini’, come from the team’s interest in developing and growing the best pollen-free plants. The new product has the great advantage to be entirely sterile, so that the pollen is not produced and released into the air, avoiding annoying allergic reactions. Moreover, their unique Cupressus is characterised by a bright green colour and a robust look, as the very close internodes of the branches make it look elegantly compact. Adopting this new kind of tree, you wouldn’t only add quality and beauty to your garden but also add value to the environment and people’s health! Cupressus sempervirens ‘Matteini’ is available in different heights, from three to ten meters. Find more about the nursery by visiting them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park!

THE GARDENERS GUILD The Gardeners Guild is a national trade network for professionally qualified gardeners. With over 570 active, qualified members we have grown to become one of the largest paid member groups in professional horticulture since we started over 10 years ago.

ECODEK®

The Gardeners Guild is pleased to exhibit at LANDSCAPE Show for the 5th consecutive year.

The new range of ecodek® Heritage deck boards have been specifically designed to reflect the look, charm and beauty of natural timber, whilst delivering an uncompromised higher performance level than timber can offer.

We encourage our members to attend this trade show as part of their continual professional development. It will help them keep up-to-date with industry trends and new developments. It is also a great venue for us to meet our members and for our members to meet each other. Gardening is hard work; Battersea Park is a great venue for a well-earned day off from normal activities to attend the trade exhibition for our industry.

Using the tried and tested benefits of ecodek® Wood Polymer Composite deck boards they have perfected an attractive wood grain effect outdoor board that will look and feel like a timber board. With face fixing screws, it’s even fitted like a timber board. ecodek® Heritage isn’t trying to imitate timber, ecodek® Heritage is here to replace timber. Put simply, ecodek® Heritage will deliver a Wood Polymer Composite deck board which brings the beauty of timber but removes the flaws of natural wood. ecodek® Heritage is manufactured from 95% recycled materials and has a 25-year warranty, as well as low potential for slip, wet or dry. The product does not promote mould or algae growth, needs minimal maintenance and does not require sanding or sealing like timber. The consistent colour stability means no colour leaching on walls or facades and the screw-fix system ensures solid, rigid construction.

Professionals will benefit from the ever increasing range of industry speakers and have a unique opportunity to network. It is not unusual for our members to be on first name terms with the CEO of large suppliers as a result of meeting them at Landscape. As well as speakers and exhibitors, visitors will benefit from networking with other professionals they meet. We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces of our industry colleagues at LANDSCAPE 2018! We will also be happy to talk to anyone who is considering garden maintenance as their career.

Make sure you visit the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September to see the product and find out more!

HOOK UP SOLUTIONS Outdoor pizza ovens have become an increasingly popular feature for landscapers to incorporate into garden designs. Hook Up Solutions have been working closely with Mobi Pizza Ovens helping them to install their pizza ovens into the rear of properties. The ovens, weighing approximately 450kg, are placed on the bed of the Hooka machine, then carefully transported to the rear garden and lowered into position. The Hooka machine can lift 1.5 tonne and is only 1 metre wide, so is ideal for type of lift, shift and install operation. Its light weight and large rubber tracks spread its load over a wide area, so avoids damage or subsidence to existing pavements etc. Landscape gardeners have also been using Hook Up Solutions’ machines to move and install landscaping materials, rootball trees, hot tubs and all manner of objects - saving time, money and back ache! PERENNIAL Perennial is reviving its traditional Festival Dinner, a fantastic evening of fundraising, with the help of partners and supporters from across the UK horticulture industry. Taking place on 12 October at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, one of London’s most celebrated 5 star hotels overlooking Hyde Park, the event will be a glittering evening beginning with a champagne reception in the Carlyle Suite, followed by a delicious three-course dinner and entertainment in the Ballroom. The annual festival dinner was a prestigious event dating right back to Perennial’s origins. On 17 January 1839, the Gardeners’ Benevolent Institution was founded at the inaugural dinner, which was attended by gardeners, nurserymen and wealthy estate owners. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the dinners drew the attention and support of high society. In 1852, Charles Dickens presided over the ninth festival dinner and in 1867 it was the turn of Sir Robert Peel, founder of the modern police force. Chris Crooker, Events Manager at Perennial, says: “Continuing the tradition of supporting those who look after Britain’s gardens and green spaces, this year’s festival dinner will raise funds to help make sure Perennial can continue to offer its essential welfare services, which are needed by horticulturists of every profession today more than ever. And in keeping with the tradition of illustrious hosts of these fundraising events, James Alexander Sinclair will be the speaker at our new look festival dinner this autumn.” An auction will take place, presided over by Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Jeremy StoreyWalker, with a host of fabulous lots to bid for on the night. Support for the event is growing with two headline sponsors already on board – The LANDSCAPE Show and the London College of Garden Design.

TREE AID TREE AID helps people in the drylands of Africa to lift themselves out of poverty and protect their environment. People in this part of the world live in some of the toughest conditions on earth and trees are essential to their survival. Trees provide nutrition, generate income and help to create a healthy environment. TREE AID works with local communities to help them protect and grow trees, for themselves and for future generations. Somowaga is a volunteer forest guard in Burkina Faso and gives up her time to look after the trees that her community share. TREE AID is helping people like Somowaga to get legal rights to their trees and set up systems to protect them for the future. ‘Before the forest was broken and sparse. Now, vegetation is coming back in the area of the forest that we are guarding and protecting. Because we have cared for the forest, there are already products we can take from the trees. The Acacia is in leaf all year round. I can harvest the leaves for cooking so there is now always food available for free. Balanites has fruit that are even on the tree in the dry times, and I can eat the leaves. Moringa is very good for health and nutrition; we are planting lots of it. The leaves are also on the tree all year round so they give us food if the crops fail or our animals get sick.’ ’My children and I know the value of trees because of TREE AID. In the past there were so many trees that people did not need to work very hard to get fruits and leaves, but now the forest is much less, and there are more people, so we have had to learn how to care for the forest properly.’ Meet the TREE AID team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September at Battersea Park!

ILP The Institution of Lighting Professionals is an open and collaborative organisation that works proactively with architects, interior designers and specifies to integrate quality lighting into the built environment. We promote best practice by uniting the skills of engineering, design and technology to deliver great spaces for people. Visit www.theilp.org.uk for more information. We are supporting The LANDSCAPE Show because we promote excellence in all forms of lighting one area including lighting landscapes. Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well-functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens.

GREENFINGERS Award winning garden designer, landscaper and Greenfingers Charity Ambassador Jody Lidgard officially opened the new pirate themed garden at Andy’s at St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby on Tuesday 17th April. But most of all I hope this garden will be a special place where children, their families and carers smile and enjoy precious time together.” Michelle Rollinson, Chief Executive of Andy’s at St Andrew’s Hospice said “We are delighted with how our new pirate-themed garden looks. Jody and his team, as well as the team at Greenfingers Charity have done a fantastic job of transforming the area. VENUS STONE Venus Stone’s sister company Luxury Gardens has been supplying high quality Garden Decor to the customers up and down the UK since 2012, their most recent project has seen them working on a range of corporate planters and artificial plant displays specially created for the workplace. Having greenery and a floral presence in the workplace has been scientifically proven to enhance productivity and morale, and relieve stress. The Luxury Gardens team have spent time sourcing planters ideal for livening up office and workplace environments, whilst still maintaining a professional aesthetic. They applied the same logic to their range of artificial plants and trees in order to create displays that breathe new life into often energy-sapping grey-scale working environments, yet remain subtle enough not to unbalance a professional atmosphere. The collection consists mostly of sizable stainless steel planters combined with 100% botanically accurate artificial plants crafted from the finest quality silks and plastics to emulate the consistency and finish of real life plants. All the plants require virtually no maintenance or up-keep, making them ideal for busy workplaces. The corporate packages offered by Luxury Gardens include an option to rent the displays, and a bespoke advice service in which LGUK staff will offer their expertise to curate a display tailored to your workspace. WWOO The Moroccan garden was designed and installed by New Form Landscapes and completely transformed what was initially a very bland and uninspired ‘new build’ garden in Milton Keynes. It was one of the first WWOO kitchens to be installed by WWOO UK last year. The young, professional couple had a clear vision for the garden which needed to be low maintenance due to their busy jobs and desire to immediately come home and relax together or entertain spontaneously whenever the mood took them. The entire garden set up and featured WWOO kitchen ensures no last minute rush around to prepare if the sun is still shining after work….they can make the most of the remainder of their evening by preparing everything al fresco! It includes garden furniture from John Lewis, encaustic Moroccan tiles on a raised platform area, low maintenance, ‘cat friendly’ planting scheme (including Olive trees and ferns under the WWOO kitchen), rendered feature wall (painted dark grey) with built in windows / shelving to display candles / lanterns / pot plants. Make sure you come along to LANDSCAPE at Battersea Park this September to meet the team on their stand!

LUMENA LIGHTS Incorporating outdoor light fittings that blend with the colours of a natural environment can create the perfect ambiance, without the fittings looking out of place. Lumena Lights stock a wide range of products in natural tones and finishes which can really enhance a garden design. Through customer feedback and personal experience, Lumena have found that many customers opt for standard Black Spike Lights as the best option to hide the light source within shrubbery. However, Lumena now offer finishes and materials that actually blend in with the garden landscape more effectively than Black. Garden Green, Rustic Brown and Aged Brass Spike Lights are excellent examples of this. These camouflaged colours will blend in seamlessly with the surrounding area such as foliage and soil, matching the rest of the colours of the garden and causing the light source to almost “disappear. Aged Brass and Copper are versatile materials which also have a fantastic decorative quality, providing ornamental value within a landscape with no maintenance. After a while, Natural Copper lights will oxidise to change colour to really look as if they have always been part of the garden. For rural landscaping projects, such as parklands, Lumena has introduced the Radiata Natural Pine Bollard. This durable wooden path light contains a Brass fitting and will look perfect in the countryside setting, achieving a rustic, natural feel. Various new products such as the LuxRox Rock Lights are designed specially to add to the garden scene, looking fantastic on gravel pathways and rockeries. Not only are they realistic in daylight, they also create stunning effects at night once lit, and prove a unique way marker. Visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September to view the brand new ranges of subtle lighting, and learn more about lighting and how it can be incorporated in to your project!

DECORI Spring is here and Decori panels are blooming. One of Decori’s Corten commissions from the 2017 LANDSCAPE Show has taken shape. This bespoke 3 piece design was installed behind an existing water feature for a private client’s garden. This beautiful design, specified by the client, has been laser cut out of Corten material. These panels have been a fantastic transformation in the garden, giving colour to an unnoticed water feature and their client was extremely pleased with the result. Decori deliver high quality, British manufactured metal artwork for outdoor and indoor use. Their metal screens are becoming increasingly popular due to the versatility they offer. The screens can be free standing which allows them to be used as partitions to create flexible spaces, or fixed with spiked feet to permanently fix. The panels can be used to create a variety of themes within gardens, such as Moroccan, modern minimalist, traditional or Oriental. An example of this is their standard bamboo pattern within an Oriental garden. Decori are able to produce screens in Corten (weathering steel), Stainless Steel and Aluminium and can be painted to any RAL colour. It is perfect time to order your Corten products to have them ready for this year’s summer gardens. There are many applications for Decori products, including Wall art, balustrade panels, balcony screens and even tables, seats and planters. They have a range of standard panels but can also design and manufacture your bespoke projects, and send render images to clients for approval. EUROPA LIFESTYLE Europa Lifestyle & Corradi are proud to present Pergotenda® Millenium® Celeb. It was 2008 when Millenium® - the first aluminium Pergotenda® - debuted on the market. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary Europa Lifestyle and Corradi decided to revisit what has over time become one of Corradi’s iconic products. The new lines are inspired by a partnership with IAAD (Istituto d’Arte Applicata & Design) based in Turin. Young product designers created ideas that were then developed by Corradi, resulting in a restyling not only of its look but also of its functionality. A product that will play a central role in future outdoor design: this is Millenium® Celeb. Millenium® Celeb has all the makings of exceptional design: external lights on the front pillars and upper runners, internal lights on the frontal and side beams, the possibility of using wood finishes to create elegant surfaces, filtering and shading screens integrated frontally and designed specifically for the product. Different configurations can be chosen, including filtering screens completely integrated, glass sliding doors, with or without screens. LED lighting can also be integrated into the framework, the play of warm white light producing a spectacular effect. The external lights (on pillars and runners) and internal lights (on the frontal and side beams) can be chosen separately. The possibility of having shafts of warm white light on the pillars, on the runners or on the beams - as well as wooden inserts make Celeb particularly appealing. The pillars can also be customised in aluminium of various colours or with a chrome effect; it is also available with 2 to 4 runners and in the inclined version. To find out more come and meet Europa Lifestyle at LANDSCAPE this september at Battersea Park!

URBAN STREET DESIGNS Urban Street Designs manufactured moveable Planters and Benches for this London Project. The outside space is used for public events and the remit from the client was to have planters and seating that could be re-arranged with a small electric forklift. This allowed them to configure the benches and planters to best suit the event that was being held. The furniture was manufactured in a mild steel, galvanised sub-frame and clad with oak as specified by the architect. As oak is quite an unstable timber they added hidden internal fixings to prevent the boards from warping. They then used stainless steel dome head bolts to show a decorative external fixing. Urban Street Designs Ltd uses the latest CAD Technology and carry out all works in house, from their new 6kw Bystronic laser cutter, Power Rollers to create radius sections, Press Brakes for forming clean radius edges. They have a Powder Coating plant on site and our Fabricators are coded and Weld to British standards and their designers can work from a detailed design or simple concept sketch. If you would like to find out more about Urban Street Designs then come down to LANDSCAPE this September to see their product range!

LECA The Helix project in Falkirk has transformed a tired and lifeless environment into one of the most expansive and attractive community locations in Europe. The Helix forms the hub of the Forth and Clyde canal and has a strong water theme with a kilometre of new canal providing a safe new connection to Grangemouth with a new lagoon, an adventure splash area and a wetland broadwalk. The entire site is linked by 27 kilometres of shared access pathways linking 16 communities. Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate has played a key role below the surface of this project enabling construction access and land raising directly over a Scottish Water 36” fresh water trunk main and a 500mm pumped rising main. Its specification has avoided enormous additional costs that would have arisen from the rerouting of Scottish Water’s assets. David McCandless, graduate geoenvironmental engineer, Ironside Farrar, explains the Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate requirement: “Putting both raised hard and soft landscape works associated with the Kelpies over the ains would have placed unacceptable weight on the pipework so we looked for a lightweight product to substitute the traditional earth fill and Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate fitted the bill. By replacing up to 1250mm of additional fill with Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate we reduced the increased load substantially and were able to demonstrate that the land raising could occur without undue risk.” Rising high above this futuristic community landscape are The Kelpies, created by sculptor Andy Scott. These are two fabulous 30-metres high, stainless steel sculptures of equine heads that reflect the lineage of the heavy horse of Scotland’s successful era of heavy industry. Come down to LANDSCAPE this September to meet the team and find out more about their products!

EASIGRASS Technological advances in artificial plant and grass design has allowed for the creation of green space in a huge variety of places where real flora and fauna is unable to grow or really thrive. Urban areas in particular are benefiting and seeing fantastic makeover results from realistic artificial plant installations that require little maintenance. Handcrafted in Surrey, England, Easi-Wall is the latest innovative garden design to be launched by the multi award-winning Easigrass brand. Each lush green textured Easi-Wall panel is meticulously built with the finest quality artificial foliage, which has been carefully selected and arranged to mirror the look and feel of natural vertical planting. Light and breathable, Easi-Wall panels can be installed on any concrete surface, brick wall or frame, such high-walled courtyards, balconies, commercial offices and urban settings. UV stabilised and durable to withstand all weathers, the walls are constructed seamlessly, with each panel installed using a heavy-duty, unique fixing system. Developers working to construct a high-end London townhouse in Knightsbridge commissioned the Easigrass team to install a 36-panel artificial plant vertical wall to reach from the basement garden patio area all the way up to the top floor. The extraordinarily life-like, unique, low maintenance Easi-Wall completely transformed its previously lifeless, enclosed high-brick walled area. The large glass patio doors of the property open out to a lush vertical plant wall, which can be viewed from a window on every level of the house to a height of 3 metres (10ft). The Easi-Wall was constructed using Opal design panels, which were pre-cut to size, then installed seamlessly on the high garden wall by the Easigrass team. Easigrass offers three different styles of panels – Opal, Emerald and Ruby - which work with all shapes and sizes of installation. Creating green spaces both outdoors and indoors, Easi-Walls have also transformed commercial sector spaces such as offices, receptions, restaurants, nurseries and hotel areas. The team will be at LANDSCAPE this September so come along and meet them to find out more!

KATE GOULD Kate Gould Gardens chose complimentary hard landscaping materials for their garden at The Ascot Spring Garden Show this April. Laser cut corten steel screens sat against flint stone and bamboo decking provided by Loknan to create separate outdoor seating and dining areas. Leisure Plan supplied a stunning wood table and chairs from their Dedon range as well as Ahnda arm chairs. These sat around a firepit provided by Encompass. Grey wood effect porcelain paving from CED stone created pathways to these areas from various access points in the garden. Textural evergreen planting combined with bold and bright seasonal spring colours of orange, blue, purple and pink created a complete show stopper. Visitors to the show were completely taken with Kate’s choice of ‘Orange Princess’ tulips. You will be able to see another stunning show garden designed and built by the team at the Chelsea Flower Show from the 22nd May – 26th May 2018. Make sure you come down to Battersea to hear from Kate as part of the Seminar Programme at LANDSCAPE 2018!

ROUND WOOD OF MAYFIELD A new website that showcases the Thermory® Collection has been launched this week by Round Wood of Mayfield. ThermoTreated.co.uk is dedicated to the innovative and eco-friendly range, which includes decking, cladding, flooring, shingles and tiles. Most are available in both ash and pine and are supplied with a range of time-saving fitting accessories. Thermo treated timber products are heated and steamed at temperatures of up to 215°C in computer-controlled kilns. This toughens the timber (achieving a high level of dimensional stability), ensures a low moisture content and develops a dark, luxurious colour that runs throughout the wood. The result is a highly attractive board that is extremely stable, even when cut from softwoods. Crucially, Thermory® also boasts outstanding environmental credentials; their processes are entirely chemical free and are only applied to responsibly harvested raw materials. As one of the UK’s main distributors of the Thermory® Collection, Round Wood of Mayfield hold large stocks ready for nationwide despatch. “At Round Wood of Mayfield, we are constantly striving to introduce new and innovative timber products to our business,” said MD Zac Soudain. “Thermory® is a great example of a product that has been developed over time. For almost a quarter of a century, PRO Landscape has helped landscape designers, landscape contractors, garden centres and others in the landscape design field create professional designs that impress customers and sell designs. For the last 12 months, the development team has been working tirelessly on new design features and expansion of the plant library to a total number of just over 18,000 items to choose from. HARROWDEN TURF Turfonline is the ecommerce flagship for Harrowden Turf, using Harrowden’s extensive buying power, turf, topsoil, landscaping tools and lawn care products are brought together. Turfonline have been involved with a hugely exciting and unusual project recently, involving Turfing a windmill. The clients Alan and Christine fell in love with a partly refurbished windmill in Oxfordshire which was originally constructed in 1709. Alan and Christine’s refurbishments involved excavating the mound to enlarge the basement and build more living accommodation and to avoid changing the appearance of the windmill; they decided to top the new extension with a turf roof. Turf needs a minimum of 15cm of growing medium, which is a very good insulator. Alan and Christine designed their whole building to be able to support a turf roof. The building needed to cope with the sheer weight of 20cm of growing medium, rain, snow, and a man with a mower. Of course, drainage is important too, so Alan designed some drainage outlets. The other extreme of English weather of course is drought, so this turf roof has an irrigation system built into it too. The finished result is brilliant and the clients are delighted! The turf roof helps to blend both the new and old parts of the building as well as the landscape beyond. Come and visit Harrowden Turf on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September to find out how they can help with your next project!

CED STONE GROUP Award-winning designer Kate Gould created ‘A Garden For All Seasons’ for the very first Ascot Spring Garden Show in April, an enticing and attractive garden that was a firm favourite with visitors. ‘The concepts behind spring gardens should be so much more than just working with bulbs’, said Kate. ‘This time of year, it’s all about the trees – we knew we wanted the blossom but getting the timing right and having the tree come into flower for the show was a challenge.’ Keeping the trees in mind, Kate opted for the Oyster Porcelain Paving from CED’s EMPEROR Country Range, which beautifully replicates the natural patterning of wood in a cool grey shade. ‘Lighter coloured paving options are still a very popular choice in city gardens’, explains Kate. ‘In London, where there’s a lot of dirt and debris falling from trees, porcelain paving in a light colour will stay a lot cleaner than a lightly toned natural stone which can stain. There’s just as much choice with porcelain paving products as there is with natural stone’. The cool grey tones of the Oyster EMPEROR porcelain paving was perfectly combined with the pale pink blossom, fresh green planting and orange corten steel structures. Kate opted for their 10mm Flint Gravel for the dining space, specifically to help with drainage in that area of the garden but also to bring a different texture into the scheme. ‘Gravel is certainly not a mundane product, it’s a sustainable material that can look great in the right setting’ said Kate. See the range for yourself at LANDSCAPE in September this year!

KEBUR GARDEN MATERIALS If you’re looking for accessories to complement porcelain paving, Kebur Garden Materials has launched an expanded range this Spring as part of its 2018 Natural Stone and Porcelain Collection. Introducing six types of porcelain cladding, bespoke porcelain bullnose edging and additional natural stone setts, there is something to complete every porcelain project. Chris Jones, Sales Manager, says ‘We find customers wanting to finish off their porcelain projects often turn to natural stone for a unique and characterful look. So we’ve introduced some new options, such as Egyptian Limestone and sawn Brazilian Slate to give more choice’. The exquisite Egyptian Limestone Sinai Pearl sett (pictured) is honed and tumbled, with sawn edges to create a smooth, sleek look. These setts are a warm beige tone and packed with natural character, such as glass and quartz veining and the occasional fossil. Chris continues, ‘Our new bespoke edging service is really taking off this year too. With our full colour-bodied Contempo Porcelain range now reaching over 30 designs, we can offer matching tiles, steps and copings to suit a whole range of garden designs’. One such tile is the Contempo Sandstorm, a creamy buff 450x900mm format porcelain with a gently riven surface reminiscent of sandstone. A bullnose-edge to these tiles creates a stunning pool coping in the installation by Bluewater Landscapes (pictured). Kebur’s full natural stone and porcelain collection can be viewed in their newly developed inside and outside displays, one of the largest in the area, just minutes from the M3 in Farnborough, Hampshire. Make sure to meet the Kebur team at LANDSCAPE this September!

MOORE CONCRETE Moore Concrete recently launched ECOncrete’s Bio Active Living Wall, the perfect solution to induce natural plant growth in urban areas. Newly launched in the past year, ECOncrete’s Bio Active Living Wall provides plant coverage to form green living walls in urban developments. This significantly improves the aesthetics of construction whilst providing cleaner and healthier air, and reducing the ecological footprint of urban development. ECOncrete’s technology provides sustainable solutions, creating ecologically active infrastructure, which is specifically designed to induce rapid plant wall coverage on inland buildings. ECOncrete® Bioenhanced Wall Tiles are 30cm’s square and may be easily fitted to various types of existing walls, using bolts, mortar or a combination of the two. There are 2 types of tile, standard and pocket, that they recommend being used in together at a ratio of 9 to 1, to maximise the acceleration of natural growth. It is the physical and chemical properties of the wall tiles that strongly influences their capability to support the growth of wall clinging plants, endolithic algae, lichens and mosses. Their highly complex design and porosity create moist niches that support flora, without the need for complex soil and irrigation systems. Overall ECOncrete provides an effective, low maintenance, easy installed green wall solution. Visit them in September at LANDSCAPE on stand C71!

ASHWELLS TIMBER Ashwells Timber are often asked to explain why they are so passionate about reclaiming and upcycling tropical hardwood timber in the UK. They believe that for the resources to continue to sustain them they must look at what they have available before them; before they draw more from this beautiful planet. Many years ago the UK imported timber from around the world, stripping forests in the process. These trees had taken hundreds of years to achieve the size they were; growing so slowly in the heat, that the grain was extremely dense, and exceptionally durable. This majestic timber was brought back to the UK and used to build the infrastructure around the country. Over recent years this timber has been replaced, and Ashwells have strived to reclaim as much as possible so a second use can be found. Every piece has a story to tell and when cut, displays the most beautiful colours. Architect Alison Crawshaw, has used Ashwells Timber on numerous occasions and when asked why, she replied, ‘The timber brings a material depth to any project. It’s a beautiful, durable material and each piece is unique’. Part of her latest project was to deck a roof garden on this London home. She decided to use Greenheart timber, which is considered to be one of the most durable timbers in the world. The timber would have grown in Guyana, but Ashwells reclaimed it from works being carried on the Harbour Wall in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. Ensuring it’s beauty continues to be enjoyed. Make sure to visit Ashwells Timber at the LANDSCAPE Show in September!

APL The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is one of the toughest within the industry. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. The APL community continues to flourish with over 15 cluster meeting venues nationwide delivering valuable mentoring and networking to members and nonmembers. That equates to over 75 meetings per year. If you have never been to one, make this year the year you do. But what else are the APL able to offer in 2018? After a hugely successful Ascot Spring Garden Show, the APL will also be at Harrogate Spring Show, BBC Gardeners’ World Live (with the ever popular APL Avenue) and RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The APL have been building gardens at these shows for many years, supporting its members and delivering a very clear message to the consumer on how and why they should choose a member of the APL, 2018 is no different and looks to be even better. Business development is a large part of APL strategy and their courses are tailored to the needs of today’s market. They will launch their start up course later this year and continue with the full course with a day on financials. Also look out for their work with the next generation of landscapers at WorldSkills UK Landscaping competition and Young Landscapers Award. The APL are pleased to continue to support LANDSCAPE and will be exhibiting again this year, meet Phil, Natalie and Amy at this year’s show and see what’s planned for 2019!
