Graduate Landscapes Is there a more depressing sight in a garden than a pool which has been poorly designed or is in the wrong place? At Graduate Landscapes they often arrive on site where it seems as though little thought and planning has been put into the long term aesthetic and practical implications of such a big investment. There are some quite obvious considerations about the siting of a pool. It is advisable to avoid shady areas such as under large trees or any north facing position where a lot of shade will make the pool a less enticing place to be. If you are in any doubt always go for a south westerly orientation to get the heat of the sun during the day as well as the last of the late afternoon and early evening sun, at a time when you and your family are likely to be using it most. In most cases a swimming pool is often a very dominant feature of the garden and will require softening in order to effortlessly integrate into the wider landscape. The most effective way of accomplishing this is to design planting beds around the pool to help blur the line between hard and soft landscaping and at the same time creating a very attractive, comfortable space to be tempted into. Subtle planting such as box hedging and topiary will provide year round interest and when considering one of our natural swimming pools, the planting zone will automatically create a more organic feel to the surrounding area. Keep the patio area around the pool uncluttered and furniture to a minimum; though it is advisable to buy the best furniture your budget will allow, to enhance the ambience and feel of the pool area. For practical reasons the heating system needs to be in close proximity to the pool to reduce heat loss as much as possible, though these buildings should be inconspicuous and well screened with evergreen shrubs and climbers so they fade from view. APL

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is the toughest within the industry. Along with the initial inspection, each member is inspected annually to ensure each member has up to date insurances, complies with health and safety law and their quality of work is to the highest possible. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers.

Gordon Low Shown here is a very basic 1.00mm SealEco box welded liner which was made for Aquajardin at Blooms Garden Centre, Gloucester for their retail pond display area.

Discover more about becoming a member of the APL or finding a landscaper to work with at www.landscaper.org.uk. APL are proud supporters of the LANDSCAPE Show, come and talk to them on their stand in Battersea Park this September.

Stewart Iles said that this display has brought a huge amount of interest from shoppers who asked if they supplied the kit or if they could come and build one for them. Stewart says that since installing the display his pond liner sales have increased and that they have already doubled marginal plant sales from last year. Come and talk to Gordon Low on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park to see how they can help you.

Esthec For Colombo La Famiglia, a renowned Swiss firm specialising in furniture design culture, aesthetics are obviously of paramount importance. Their roof top terrace has recently been adorned with the environment friendly Esthec® Terrace system, which demonstrates the pleasing aesthetic qualities of the product. The presentation of holistic collections and a fine selection of living experiences are of great importance to the company. The roof top terrace serves as a showroom for designer furniture and simultaneously as an outdoor experience area for their clientele. It provides a space in which designers and partners can present their latest collections. However, the old wooden deck was in need of replacing. The stylish Esthec® Terrace material was chosen as the replacement because the material scored superbly well in both design and durability, it was a logical substitute for the traditional material wood. Naturally the collections exhibiting rotate regularly. The products are not only characterised by beautiful design, but also by the attention paid to the environment and sustainability – just like Esthec® Terrace. Come and talk to Esthec about your decking requirements on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

David Austin This year David Austin is introducing three beautiful English Roses. ‘Desdemona’ is an exquisite white rose with an exceptionally long flowering season; ideal for combining with other shrubs and perennials in the mixed border. ‘The Ancient Mariner’ forms a larger shrub, bearing masses of magnificent glowing pink blooms. Whilst it is a very useful variety for positioning towards the back of the border, it works equally well planted on its own, creating a dramatic display. His third new rose, ‘Sir Walter Scott’, is of very different character from the general run of English Roses due to its Scottish Rose heritage. Combining the charm and robustness of the Scottish Roses with the fragrance and prolific repeatflowering of the English Roses, it is a very useful addition to the collection. Whilst each new rose makes its own special contribution to the diversity of the English Rose collection, they all combine excellent health with reliability and vigour. Believing that “fragrance is the other half of the beauty of a rose”, David Austin made it his mission when he first began breeding roses over 60 years ago to restore scent to the modern rose. Today his English Roses are renowned for their array of delicious fragrances and we are pleased to say that his new varieties are probably the most fragrant group of roses that he has introduced for some years.

Tendercare There is no greater catalyst for redesigning a garden than a wedding reception at the family home, and for Tendercare a client was looking ahead to the nuptial celebrations of not just one, but two daughters in as many years. Having served the family well throughout the girls’ childhood years, the Buckinghamshire garden had become tired, but displayed one remarkable feature – the view beyond the rear boundary to the neighbouring landscape beyond. This outlook inspired a design that draws attention and activity to the lower section of the site where a sage green, lead-roofed HSP summerhouse creates a cosy retreat from which both garden and wider landscape are enjoyed. The clients’ long-held ambition to grow vegetables inspired the transformation of a grass bank at the rear boundary. Once terraced and retained, this previously unusable gradient has become a discreet yet delightful vegetable plot, and an unexpected visual treat for visitors as they wander round the garden. Elsewhere, significant soil improvements create ideal environments for new mixed borders - a much under-used planting style that demands broad plant knowledge and design expertise. The diverse plant palette includes trees, shrubs, hedges, perennials and ground cover plants, and just prior the wedding, additional seasonal colour was added. A week before the event, with final planting additions complete, relief was evident in the predictably stressed parental psyche – with cars, food, outfits and wedding day logistics still to be finalised they could at least relax about the garden, gloriously ready to receive guests – and photographers. Come and talk to Tendercare about your project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Wildflower Turf Wildflower Turf Ltd have a golden track record supplying instant meadows to the very best garden designers at the RHS garden shows. This year they were involved with the most eagerly anticipated return to Chelsea, the exceptional Dan Pearson with his plans to recreate the Chatsworth garden. It was clear from the start, whilst this was going to be a man-made project, it needed to feel like nature; it just so happened that Wildflower Landscape Turf, containing 34 native perennial species, fitted the bill perfectly. Pre-grown on their turf beds in Hampshire, the turf would create the backdrop to the majority of the garden. With just 6 days to go, they got the green light that the garden was ready for the turf installation and 300m² of Wildflower Turf was transported to the Royal Hospital Gardens. Dan Pearson’s passion for naturalism was a meeting point of horticulture and nature, a garden that was very much on the wild side. Stepping into the garden he hoped would make you feel a step closer to nature and without a doubt it did. The macro view with the huge boulders forming the hard landscaping balanced with the micro detail; complex communities of wildflowers seen in the smallest six inch square of ground space is what made this garden special. A feat of engineering, a ridiculous amount of work and an incredible team, resulting in a stand out winner at Chelsea this year. Wildflower Turf Ltd were proud to have their product used throughout the ‘Best in Show’ garden.

Kebony Architects Laurence Associates have this summer completed seven luxurious bespoke and contemporary holiday apartments in Cornwall, which feature modern luxury and ecological design and materials. This project, which features Kebony cladding on the exterior of all cottages, creates a premium holiday destination for the environmentally-conscious traveller. It is a fantastic project for Kebony to be involved with as the wood provides the structural and design properties demanded by the project and its position on the seafront in Polzeath. The Kebony cladding is exceptionally hard-wearing, having been tried and tested in harsh Norwegian climates. The material is thus perfectly suited to resist the Cornish sea winds. Over time it will develop a beautiful silver patina, without the need for expensive and environmentally damaging treatments. The apartments at The Point, designed to blend in and complement the surrounding landscape, makes the most of a spectacular setting with minimal environmental impact, both in construction and maintenance. The building itself sits within a hill ridge, complete with a sedum roof and Kebony cladding, discretely blending with the surroundings. High quality building materials, including the acclaimed and sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, Kebony, are used for the cladding and soffits and the stone walls are locally sourced. The exterior is complemented by the sustainable design of the interior; the finish is contemporary with modern light furniture that has been uniquely designed and ‘up cycled’ and subtle hints of seaside living in the accessories. Stone flooring, wood burners and kitchens that are individually designed and built by a local craftsman complete the bespoke look. In addition, ground source heat pumps have been installed, which supply hot water and underfloor heating throughout. Visit the Kebony stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park for more details.

Gary Scott

My last article for this publication was about being commissioned for my ‘Free Spirit’ sculpture for St Ives in Cornwall – not all commissions can be as high profile of course! The truth is that for me there is no greater joy than being commissioned to undertake a bespoke sculpture. The client will have seen my work and feel inspired enough to want to have one of my sculptures made specifically for them and usually situated in a particular place. Commissioning leads to a special relationship which I not only enjoy but influences me and takes my work in unanticipated directions – after all no two briefs are ever the same and of course the locations differ enormously. I always go into a new commission with an open mind and look to respond to the site specifically and also to draw upon the tastes and aspirations of my client – what style is their home, what artists do they admire and what do they have on their walls. Generally I make about 6 or 8 sketch maquettes for a commission – simple little forms in basic media with a view to exploring my ideas and giving the client something to visualise. These are distilled from lots of sketching and playing with materials, trying to find a ‘way in’… It’s always interesting to see which forms resonate most with the client and surprising how often we are on the same wavelength. With this feedback I am able to develop the maquettes to the next level, usually at a larger scale and things start to clarify. It really is quite an organic process, I never know where it is going to lead, and takes on a momentum all of its own. Generally it takes several months with numerous client meetings along the way, to arrive at a final form – depending on the chosen scale this is either moulded and cast directly or scaled up and then moulded and cast prior to installation in that special place. As well as being commissioned for work Gary has been in prestigious exhibitions such as ING Discerning Eye, the Cork Street Open and the Affordable Art Fair and shown at venues from KPMG’s Canary Wharf to Waterperry House, Oxford. He has recently won the Art Academy London’s Mixed Media Sculpture Prize and was shortlisted for the Threadneedle Sculpture Prize. Come and see Gary’s work at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Air Garden Air Garden can be placed on the walls of buildings or can be used to separate plots of land, terraces and environments, without the need for a wall, thereby creating a natural noise barrier. One such case was where an installation was required to separate one neighbour from the other letting both of them to enjoy each side of the vertical garden, so we chose the AG Postdiv system. It was been installed on solid ground and the inclination of the pavement was resolved by means of the telescopic bases, reaching a secure, balanced and visually linear enclosure. The wide range of AG Postdiv posts made it possible to design perpendicular and angular sections according to the separation design that had to be created; Air Garden conforms to the needs of the space. All the structure has been made of stainless steel, assuring the durability and quality of the system. As regards the irrigation, only one water intake is required and the AG Cestruct Acometida basket (includes a shutoff valve, a filter, a pressure regulator and a programmer) is responsible for distributing the water. Air Garden is always equipped with an irrigation system and with the appropriate programming to avoid wasting water. Finally, Air Garden’s lighting system AG Lux has been incorporated to the installation. It is low energy cost lighting that extends the good times beside their vertical garden. In addition, it lights up the outline of the enclosure at night strengthening the feeling of safety.

Schellevis Dutch company Schellevis has been winning acclaim for its distinctive paving and landscaping elements from designers and architects since launching in the UK last year. Their lively look and natural texture is created by mixing special ingredients and dyes to produce a broken Basalt finish in a wide range of colours and formats. Two brand new shades, ‘taupe’ and ‘cream’, were the inspiration for the Schellevis ‘Dutch Chocolate’ garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. UK Sales and Marketing Manager Gordon Stevenson explained: ‘We wanted to show the unique character and colours of the tiles in a real garden setting.’ Award winning landscape and garden designer Carien van Boxtel took the opportunity to reference landscape artist Louis le Roy in her design for Schellevis: He stacked used pavers without cement in his masterpiece De Ecokathedraal, allowing plants to grow freely and creating the perfect marriage between manmade and natural material. The ‘Dutch Chocolate’ project quickly gained momentum, attracting the involvement of many leading horticultural enterprises in the Netherlands. ‘It was thrilling to receive the support of the industry and in turn we wanted the garden to be a tribute to all those specialist growers and suppliers,’ said Mr Stevenson. Exquisite planting in caramel, cream and brown shades, with accents in bright orange – the Dutch national colour – matched the warm chocolate colours of the paving perfectly; some flowers even smelled of cocoa, giving the garden a truly mouth-watering feel!

Gardeners Guild Membership of The Gardeners Guild continues to grow during 2015 with 77 new members already joined in the first 6 months of 2015. Long Rake Spar Earlier this year Long Rake Spar were delighted to donate their premium 14mm Silver Grey Granite to the Hortus non Conculus garden exhibit at the Tate Britain coinciding with their ‘Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World’ exhibition. Designed by Rosie Irving and co-designer Antonia Young, the garden takes its inspiration from the textile designs of artist Barbara Hepworth and highlights the different contexts and spaces in which Hepworth presented her work. Silver Grey Granite was chosen because of its white and blacked flecked colouring which emphasised the monochromatic design that Rosie created, as well the texture it provided in contrast to the smooth cast limestone planters. The aggregate was placed in a floor stabilisation system, to ensure the gravel stayed within the design and was easy for visitors to walk on. The Silver Grey was chosen in a 14mm size to fit effectively in the retaining grids and to allow access for wheelchair users. Hortus non Conculus will remain in-situ outside Tate Britain until 2nd September 2015. Come and talk to Long Rake Spar on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Perennial A show garden at this summer’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show celebrates women’s influence in gardening since the Victorian era in a collaboration between quintessentially English floral fragrance house Yardley London and long-standing charity for horticulturists Perennial, both of which have roots firmly planted in British floral heritage. Designed by Jean Wardrop and Alexandra Stevenson, A Growing Obsession – the Yardley London Perennial Garden is inspired by the Victorian English Garden, recreating the elegance of a ladies’ flower garden. The concept for the garden was inspired by a book published in 1840 entitled ‘Instructions in Gardening for Ladies’ by Jane Loudon, whose writings helped make gardening more accessible. The British obsession with gardening goes back to this era, a time when it began to cross gender and class divides and more people started to enjoy gardening as a pastime. The garden evokes an atmosphere of refinement and femininity that mirrors the delicate floral fragrances of Yardley London’s new Contemporary Classics range, which includes English Lavender, English Rose, Lily of the Valley and April Violets. The planting plan includes romantic roses and lavender, which capture the essence of the fragrances. From the great Victorian gardening tradition came the foundations of Perennial as a benevolent charity. In 1839, the custodians of Britain’s great estates came together to establish pension funds for their sick, injured and elderly gardeners. Perennial was born and today is the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping all people who work in horticulture, and their families, when times get tough. Europlanters This season there is a move towards nature and neutral colours as people seek calm surroundings, a sense of wellbeing and simplicity to soothe their frayed nerves, escape from the everyday hustle and bustle and to counter balance the constant visual overload they face. Wood’s natural beauty and warmth works wonders for creating this sense of harmony and balance. Europlanters use hardwoods such as Oak, Sapele, Cedar and Iroko in their designs to meet these current needs and desires for which wood is ideally suited. There is a large selection to choose from ranging from the more traditional Versailles to the contemporary fusion of GRP and Timber. If you would rather, you can simply let your imagination run wild and working with the design team plan your own bespoke planter that can be tailor made especially for you.

Wood is a natural insulator and will help to protect plants delicate roots from frost, while in the warmer months it will also protect from the heat of the sun. To ensure the longevity of the planters and to avoid soil from corroding the wood internally, Europlanters line each timber planter with Glass Reinforced Plastic and build in a unique water retaining reservoir system which aids the growth of plants. ‘As we have grown so much over the last 25 years we have now incorporated a joinery team into our business and this has allowed us to be more creative with our range of wooden planters.’ Said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

As Europlanters are now more environmentally aware they look for sustainable alternatives, eco-friendly options, and greener solutions. All Europlanters timber planters are crafted from treated redwood or finest quality hardwood bought from sustainable forests via ecologically sound suppliers and the timber can be stained or painted to any RAL colour.

New Wood Trees Devon based New Wood Trees offer a uniquely British take on the multi-stem, by taking homegrown native trees and producing beautifully shaped multi-stem specimens. The architectural shape and instant aesthetic appeal of the multi-stem tree is currently much in demand. As such trees are seldom grown in the UK, this emerging trend is currently being satisfied by countries as far away as Italy and Spain. This unfortunately puts the demand for multi-stem trees at odds with key industry issues such as sustainability and bio-security, as well as the unpredictable British weather, in which some southern European specimens can struggle. In response, New Wood Trees have created a specialist tree nursery offering homegrown alternatives that provide all the aesthetic appeal of their European counterparts, grown from hardy native stalwarts such as the Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) Hawthorn (Craetagus mongyana) and Field Maple (Acer campestre) These trees are just as capable of being coppiced into the much loved architectural multi-stem style, whilst also providing the peace of mind that they will thrive in their native climate. If you have an interest in learning more about the unique qualities of multi-stem trees contact New Wood Trees on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Streetscape Streetscape is an award winning social enterprise. They provide apprenticeships in landscape gardening to 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, helping them to build the skills, experience and attributes they need to fulfil their dreams and move into and retain work: growing lives, transforming landscapes. In so doing they design, landscape and maintain gardens across South London for residential, commercial and communitybased clients. Streetscape was founded by James Gubb and Guy Watts. They are driven by one, simple, overarching goal: that each and every long-term unemployed young person they provide an apprenticeship to then moves into, and retains work, following their time with them. Recently, Streetscape were contracted to relocate and build the Gold medal winning RBC Waterscape Garden, designed by Hugo Bugg for the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This garden is open to the public, so if you would like to see Streetscape’s work first hand, please visit at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Streetscape are proud to be part of the LANDSCAPE Youth Initiative and would be delighted to talk to you if you are interested in employing the Streetscape team, or finding out more about them. Inition There does not seem to be a day that passes in the consumer press where there is not mention of some sort of technological breakthrough. Whether it be 3D printing, virtual or augmented reality, or the next generation of wearable technology that will revolutionise the way we live our lives, there always seems to be a lot happening. Things are changing fast, but is there a way that these innovations can actually assist your business to improve its processes and gain competitive advantage? The answer unfortunately is not a simple one. Whilst there is no doubt there the likes of 3D printing and virtual reality can be fantastic tools to engage your customers and bring an idea to life, cost considerations are a prohibitive factor. The idea of 3D printing a tangible representation of your vision for a project to give to the client seems like a fantastic idea, but if this is going to cost ÂŁ1,000 then is it really feasible? Taking your customer into a virtual world where they can immerse themselves in your vision for their project sounds spectacular, but is it viable to do so if this comes with a price tag in the tens of thousands. The bottom line in all honesty is that these technologies can bring with them the possibility to be doing something truly spectacular when bringing your ideas to life. At the same time, currently pricing will make only larger projects pragmatically a suitable fit. In terms of accessibility, a scaled model of your project vision would be the most cost-effective option, where as a fully immersive customer-defined journey using virtual reality would be at the top end. The technology landscape is changing all the time, so the best thing you can do is to keep your ear to the ground! Come and listen to Jay Short from Inition, one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Their design expertise is often put to use for theirr bespoke buildings service such as a recent residential project for a 4.2m bespoke gazebo with cedar shingle roof tiles. Their customers were looking for a high quality garden building to provide a social relaxation space overlooking their new garden landscaping. Made from redwood and hand-crafted at their Kent workshop, the gazebo includes a full timber roof and an expanded entranceway, with 5 supporting posts and 4 curved balustrades to maximize the internal space.

Anderton Concrete are based in Northwich, Cheshire and are part of the Ibstock Building Products Group which is a private equity owned building products manufacturing business employing over 2400 people in the UK and US, with 49 clay, concrete and speciality manufacturing plants operating to the highest standards of health and safety and environmental stewardship. Anderton, whilst predominantly known for their links with the Rail Industry, manufacture a range of dry lay concrete block retaining wall systems which are equally at home in the domestic environment as they are in the infrastructure market. Keystone is a large format block system suitable for use in a wide range of situations and can be used to form terrace areas or raised garden sections. It is available in a range of colours in both a Splitface and Smoothface finish and replicates the look of natural stone at a fraction of the cost. The nature of the wall construction allows for curves to be introduced into the design therefore offering a more flexible design. Slopeloc is a smaller unit which offers a uniquely attractive appearance that can complement many landscaping designs. The finished wall leans back rather than stand vertically, softening the aesthetics of the structure. Slopeloc is also available in a range of colours similar to Keystone. If you are looking for something more functional then Stepoc may be the solution for your design. This product is a fast, cost effective method of constructing a retaining wall, removing the need for expensive concrete shuttering and labour. The walls when constructed are typically faced with brick, stone or render to complement the required design. Lumena Lights Wooden bollards are a subtle and natural way to illuminate a garden, designed to blend in well with surroundings with a similar appearance such as trees and decking. They look charming when bordering areas of the garden, as well as lighting pathways, driveways or any outdoor area with a naturalistic feel. Teak, a tropical hardwood, is a very popular choice when it comes to wooden outdoor lighting. It is highly durable and produces a natural oil which helps protect from outdoor conditions; as it ages it can develop a soft, grey colour. This elegant, lightweight wood, is ideal for both domestic and commercial use and is very easy to maintain. Many of Lumena’s teak garden lights are kiln dried and oil treated to prolong its life. Teak oil can be used to maintain the fresh new look and add further protection, but it is not essential. Although Lumena’s Wooden Bollards are sold as 240v as standard, most have an ES bulb holder which means they can easily be used in 12v lighting systems. Simply replace the 240v bulb with a 12v bulb and then connect to a 12v AC transformer, both available from Lumena. This makes installation safer and easier, and will more than double the choices of 12v garden lights. Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Langley Design Langley Design are already well-known to Landscape Architects working in the education sector. For twenty years Langley Design have been supplying well designed and manufactured quality street furniture. Their range of products gives the contractor a “complete package approach“ enabling all elements of the external furniture requirements to come from one source helping reduce cost and time spent liaising between suppliers. When the new offices for Hitachi Capital required external furniture for the staff relaxation areas, Langley Design were asked to put forward a collection of cost effective hard wearing products that fitted with the design style of the modern building and met with the architects (Macgregor Smith) approval. The selection of products from the Sheldon range visually matched the sleek modern aspect of the project, creating a synergy between the building and the landscaped areas. The materials chosen, a galvanised steel framework and FSC Hardwood Iroko timber slats would mellow with the building and provide a facility that could be used all year round. For Langley Design this was just another example of where their products, which had been designed originally for the Education sector, could be used in Commercial or Retail applications. Not only can these products be used in all sectors but by manufacturing everything to order they are able to offer a bespoke design service to produce custom furniture items or make slight variations to standard products to match the exact needs of the project. Palmstead Nurseries Palmstead recently held a Planting Masterclass for designers in June. Part of their annual events and knowledge transfer programme. Janine Pattison whose design studio based in Dorset, frequently work on sites next to the sea, gave a structured hands on session on providing shelter and making conditions suitable for plant growth. This was well received by the attendees for this intimate and interactive event. After touring the nursery the 40 delegates all left with a comprehensive guide to what plants will work close to the sea where wind, salt and sun with usually well drained soils; create challenging planting conditions. This guide and guides from previous Masterclasses on clay soils are now available with other guides on tree planting from Palmstead’s website, download section. Palmstead’s larger event their Soft Landscape Workshop on 16th September, Strictly Sustainable, focusses on issues the industry faces and how it can sell the benefits of sustainable working better to customers and clients. A recent survey indicated that the industry could do more, but projects at the smaller scale sustainability was not a priority with clients often due to lack of understanding. This one day workshop now in its eighth year attracts over 300 landscape and garden professionals – registration costs £33 incl vat and lunch. Further details and registration is via the Palmstead website features a host of top speakers from the client, ecologist and designer perspectives.

The Marlowes Shopping Centre is Hemel Hempstead’s main shopping area, situated in the town centre. The towns Dacorum Borough Council is spending £30m on a town centre regeneration project that aims to make Hemel Hempstead town centre a more vibrant, accessible and busy place to shop, work and visit. One area of this regeneration project was the urban landscaping. 30 plus large trees were incorporated into the plans and these needed to be installed with consideration for anchorage, irrigation, soil compaction and load bearing, as well as the overall look of the grilles and paving. Green-tech was approached and their specification team provided advice and CAD drawings to ensure all aesthetic, structural and budgetary requirements were met. Barry Browne, Technical Development Manager for gt Specifier said, “We were delighted to be approached by Broadway Malyan. Providing advice and sourcing workable solutions for urban landscape projects is what the gt Specifier team is all about. We helped overcome all manner of challenges; from the location of services to drainage issues to help specify the right products that will ensure the trees have the healthiest start in life, whilst looking attractive in their surroundings.” Multiple products were specified and used in this project including; the ArborRaft system - a revolutionary loadbearing tree pit system, Platipus Deadman fixing system - a tree anchoring system, Mona Relief Vente - tree Irrigation system and gt Resigrille - tree grilles with infill. Come and see more from their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Palmstead continue to work on guidance for maintenance of planted landscapes initiated at last year’s workshop and expect to publish in time for the LANDSCAPE Show. Come along and talk to them on their stand in Battersea Park this September.

Architectural Heritage PRO Landscape PRO Landscape Version 21 includes the easiest-to-use CAD software available on the market today. It truly is a CAD system that was created specifically for landscape and garden design. PRO Landscape CAD contains landscape-specific terminology making it easy-to-learn, and more importantly easy-to-use as you create stunning, accurate site plans. Those without CAD experience will be amazed at how quickly they can learn the software and create a project, those with previous CAD experience will immediately feel right at home. There are a number of specific features that every designer will find vital. PRO Landscape includes a full database of symbols and patterns that represent plantings for all climate zones, hardscapes, water features, lighting, irrigation and much, much more. The designer can easily begin their plan from a CAD or PDF file, Google Earth™ image, or even a physical survey/plot plan. You can create your designs in either black and white or full colour. Once completed, your drawings can be printed to any size or scale and also saved electronically for sharing purposes.

Established for 40 years, Architectural Heritage has over time developed a range of garden ornaments with emphasis on high quality, utilizing traditional materials such as lead, stone, bronze and marble and oak. Drawing for inspiration on the fine heritage of the Cotswold School of Arts & Crafts furniture, The Quercus Robur Seat is made in Gloucestershire by their skilled craftsmen from English Oak (Quercus Robur). Using 12 year old air-dried timber, no nails and only pegged mortise and tenon joints it was showcased for the first time at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. The Quercus Robur Seat represents the beginning of a new range of distinctive garden furniture from Architectural Heritage – the seat being the first to be in production. Only a small manufactory, a 40 ft tree comes into the workshop and three seats come out the other end... they are now busy designing a bench and two tables in the distinctive peg joint style. Come and see it for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

PRO Landscape has helped hundreds of landscape contractors, garden designers, garden centres and landscape architects create detailed, accurate site plans that will impress your customers and make designing easier than ever before. Treebox At Treebox they’re firm advocates that design and installation techniques needn’t be complicated in order to achieve powerful garden features. They also believe stunning professional gardens can be created by anyone regardless of time, budget or size, and there are perhaps no designers who understand this more than those working under the high pressure atmosphere that is the run up to RHS Chelsea. This year they were lucky enough to be selected by bespoke garden designers, Bowles and Wyer to provide them with a vertical garden system suitable for their Chelsea collaboration with handmade furniture pioneers Gaze Burvill. The overall premise for the project was the creation of a main garden transitioning into a roof garden and outdoor kitchen area. With the limited space available Bowles and Wyer cleverly extended their planting scheme vertically, with the inclusion of three living walls; the first two providing a visually astounding array of greenery such as ferns and ivy. The third a delectable selection of edible herbs and plants including mint, strawberries, basil, fennel, tomatoes, chilli peppers and rosemary. Our in house easiwall system meant designing and installing these living walls given the confines of Chelsea were efficient and adaptable. Together these walls enveloped the sculptured lounge furniture perfectly with swathes of tumbling greenery highlighting the golden shades of oak. The creation of these two areas helped give the space a sense of identity and flow, between elegant afternoon lounging nook to a dynamic outdoor entertaining space. Green Zone Paul Hensey runs Green Zone Design, it is a small practice where work is spilt between residential gardens and commercial developments. Increasingly, living walls are becoming a staple of their output, for domestic spaces as well as commercial and local government projects. Their designs pay as much attention to the use of materials as the selection of plants. They want their clients to enjoy using the gardens as much as they do designing them. Paul is a Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers(SGD) and Chair of their Adjudication process. He trained and worked as product designer before falling into garden design and journalism and has been digging ever since. He lectures at several colleges, including Portsmouth University & London College of Garden Design and is a SketchUp (CAD) evangelist running regular classes to all levels. In addition Paul is also a member of the Garden Media Guild and writes the monthly column on Construction Detailing and Best Practice for the Garden Design Journal. SGD News Small spaces can provide some of the most challenging projects for garden designers. Often wedged into the urban landscape, they can be shady, overlooked and claustrophobic awkward shapes, with poor soil and difficult access. But some of the best designers can overcome these obstacles with enriching and extraordinary design solutions. The SGD Autumn conference is on the 28th of November at the Royal Geographical Society in London. Called – “Small, But Perfectly Formed” – it aims to show what can be achieved with these small plots. Gardens where there is nowhere to hide, where every stone and leaf is highly visible, especially through the glass façades of modern houses. Garden where every plant must earn its place. Exploring the topic are designers who choose this as their natural habitat. One of these is Charlotte Rowe MSGD. Her attention to detail is meticulous, her style unmistakable. Charlotte will let us into some of the secrets of creating really small inner city gardens to a very high spec. From the other side of the world, Takeshi Nagasaki of N-tree has designed gardens in London and New Delhi as well as his native Japan. You might think you know what a Japanese garden looks like, but you could be surprised as Nagasaki shares an insight into his design rationale. Fresh from success at RHS Chelsea, Jo Thompson MSGD will show her approach to the eternal conundrum – space or plants, plants or space - and invite you to peer into the smaller corners of her extensive portfolio. Joining the speaker line-up will be John Davies, winner of the ‘Future Designer’ Award at The SGD Awards 2014. Chairing the conference will be former SGD Chair Andrew Fisher Tomlin, who has made some of the smallest gardens ever seen and organised Miniature an exhibition of tiny gardens created with a 3D printer. To book tickets for the SGD Autumn Conference, please contact them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Provender Nurseries

At Provender Nurseries they constantly evaluate the space they have on site and review stock lines they hold in order to offer their customers more choice. This year has seen a vast amount of expansion on site – some of which as a customer you will notice immediately and some that are more ‘behind the scenes’. However all changes have been made with the customer in mind and with the result of making plant and product selection at Provender Nurseries a more pleasurable experience. Just as importantly changes have also been made to improve husbandry and storage on site. Some of the changes that have taken place this year include additional tree lines and shade-houses built, improved accessible routes built around the site and more customer parking spaces. There is a larger aggregates yard and a larger customer order yard.

The additional shade houses allows Provender to hold more stock of shade loving plants in particular popular lines of Acers and Camellias. The improved access is important on a site of its size and expansion into the main shade house has really improved sales in that area. With Provender Nurseries getting busier each year they have expanded their customer car parking area and also the aggregates yard allowing vehicles to be loaded in a safe environment. Harrod Horticultural The Trade Department at Harrod Horticultural supplied a wide range of products for Raymond Blanc’s new BBC2 series ‘Kew on a Plate’. A number of their bestselling Roman Arches and a Roman Fruit Tree crown were specified to be part of the centre point of the kitchen garden and planted up with a range of heritage espalier apples – and as a central feature they appeared in virtually every shot. Raymond specifically wanted to use products designed and manufactured in the UK and the products were delivered on time, on budget and are still in place in the kitchen garden at Kew. The programme which was filmed over the course of a year covered designing and planting a kitchen garden and growing heritage produce for a range of delicious seasonal recipes and at the same time discovering the history behind our favourite fruits and vegetables. Palmahaz All of the Greenwall.pro projects have been exciting challenges from greening a petrol forecourt to providing a system that will become a Van Gogh sunflower in this years Dutch celebration of the artist. Their 2014 Gala Bau stand with its 6 m2 of white azaleas even managed page 3 in Germanys largest daily Süddeutsche Zeitung. Perhaps one that they are especially proud to have been part of is the Peace Garden for the new Holocaust memorial museum in Budapest (Sorsok Háza). The starkness of the building and its subject are contrasted by the walled green area that creates an essential space for personal reflection and a moment of stillness. The living walls on three sides cradle the garden and with the moving water, silence the outside world. The concentration of planting will cool the space in the summer, and the careful plant selection ensures the living wall into the winter months. The Sorsok Háza garden is a rewarding example of the integration of living walls into green spaces. The vertical linking of horizontal green surfaces creates a coherent environment that improves our personal well-being through the interaction with planted surroundings. Developed by a team of specialists from engineering, architecture and landscape design fields, the Greenwall.pro system was designed and built as an architectural cladding system with a building lifespan. The inherent strength of the all stainless steel construction is suitable for tough urban environments and ultimately, makes it completely recyclable. It is fully plant tested under difficult field conditions including temperatures from -15C to +35C; most importantly, its 3-litre rooting volume ensures healthier, stronger and visually nicer plants. It is designed to contribute to the UK’s BREAM classification, the US LEED certification and the Smart City concept. Come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Houzz It’s official, gardening is a national obsession in the UK. Us Brits have long been an island of gardeners, but a recent report by Houzz revealed that we spend on average 4-5 hours a week in our gardens. So what exactly are we all up to? Of the 2,200 Houzz homeowners surveyed, the majority confessed to getting their hands dirty, listing their number one outdoor activity as tending to their plants. We are also a practical nation too, with over half of homeowners planning on growing edibles in their gardens. And we are surprisingly traditional in our floral tastes with 55% choosing lavender as their top flower choice, with roses and daffodils taking the second and third places respectively.

The humble lawn is on the decline in the UK, with 62% of those upgrading their gardens confessing to reducing the size of, or replacing their lawn as part of the renovations. Conversely though 39% of upgraders consider attracting wildlife to be one of the most important design aspects of an outdoor space. As such, a huge 81% are including wildlife friendly plants, bird boxes or hives as part of their upgrade in a bid to encourage little visitors. If you would like to find out more about how you can start showcasing your landscaping business to more than 30 million visitors each month come along to the Houzz seminars at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park this September or visit their stand. Jonathan Gooch © 2014 Houzz

We have big plans too; almost a third of homeowners are planning to undertake a garden project this year and 62% of these want their garden to integrate with the rest of their home. But it’s not all hard work, as 60% also admitted they used the time outdoors to relax and 43% enjoyed eating al fresco.

H Crowther Over the last couple of months H Crowther Ltd has been working very closely with a number of designers and clients on different projects. One such project was for a very impressive pair of Lead Serpentine Planters, made exactly to the clients wishes and to fit in perfectly with their surroundings. At H Crowther Ltd everything is still made by hand by their very small group of traditional craftsmen. They have been producing Lead Ornamentation from the same Studio that they have occupied since 1908, and have been working closely with garden designers ever since. As Gertrude Jekyll, the outstanding Edwardian designer remarked, “There can scarcely be a doubt that the happiest material for our garden sculpture and ornament is lead.” It was H Crowther who supplied lead sculpture and ornament to the newly created Jekyll, Mawson and Lutyens gardens. Tobermore The London Borough of Southwark is an incredibly busy area within Inner London, boasting some of the city’s greatest landmarks and tourist attractions such as Tower Bridge, London Bridge, The Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, to name a few. Inevitably, the area experiences heavy vehicular traffic as well as a high number of pedestrians on a daily basis. In recent years, Southwark Council encountered issues with pavement shifting due to the heavy usage and the traditional 200x100mm paving products previously installed. These products did not possess optimum interlocking capabilities, so with regular rainfall, the sub-base became saturated. Over time some of the sand in the sub-base was then forced up through the joints, causing the paving system to fail. For this reason, the paving installed on streets within the area had to be renewed frequently. City Pave VS5 is the ultimate in pavement stability and is ideal for expansive schemes with heavy trafficking. This inspirational product from Tobermore incorporates shift protection on five sides of each block including the special profile on the bottom surface which produces a clawing effect in the pavement bed. This ensures continuous protection against pavement shifting from both horizontal and vertical loads. The larger element 300x150x100mm size of the City Pave VS5 block also creates a ‘traffic-calming’ effect which is very important in tourist areas, such as the London Borough of Southwark. As well as the intense structural benefits, City Pave VS5 encompasses a hard wearing surface layer which improves the strength, durability, colour retention and overall appearance of the product. The fabulous colour options available additionally offer a stylish, contemporary hard landscaping solution, suitable for any type of commercial project. For more information on Tobermore’s world class paving and walling collection visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bituchem

Hard landscaping product specialists Bituchem will be exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE Show this year to introduce the latest addition to its popular asphalt Natratex Cotswold range. The Gloucestershire based company has introduced a porous alternative to the material, known as Natratex Cotswold Porous. This sustainable drainage system (SUDS) is designed to replicate the natural infiltration process of rainfall and eliminates the need for a conventional drainage system and exposed pipework. The open-structured asphalt material allows water to permeate through the material into the ground, steadily finding its way to a natural watercourse. Bituchem has completed its first successful application of the porous material at a recently opened car park at the Royal William Yard, Plymouth.
