Toronto families want all the outdoor amenities enjoyed by their suburban cousins, in a fraction of the space. This urban landscape upgrade included a new outdoor dining area, a swim spa, privacy plantings and a turfed children’s play area. The homeowners were thrilled with the design’s openness, despite its many components. Landscapes by Lucin of Toronto specified low maintenance solutions throughout, per the homeowner’s request. Owner Arvils Lukss named outdoor lighting as the component that most surprised and delighted his customer; it brought the family outdoors for pleasant evenings.
Trust was already in place, since Landscapes by Lucin had done construction at the family’s previous home.

With planning, tiny Toronto lots can provide all the beauty and functionality a family could need. This urban oasis, designed and installed by Dr. Landscape of Toronto, is perfect for intimate social affairs as well as quiet relaxation. Horizontal boarded fencing and tall columnar planting creates privacy. This homeowner raises tomatoes and cucumbers for salad and home cooking. Parking was a top motivator for the renovation; bylaw restrictions prevented a hard surface pad in front; strategically placed pavers and plastic erosion control mats allowed the homeowner to literally park in his garden.

The front yard now accommodates a parking space, while diverting runoff from Toronto’s stormwater system.
Just a few square feet of space are enough to supply fresh vegetables.

The mix of native and naturalistic ornamental plantings filled in exuberantly, after only 18 months.

onewithnature A beautiful home set in the midst of a forest in Caledon sounded perfect, yet wasn’t. The clients wanted an attractive entrance to complement the natural setting. Contractor D.A. Gracey & Associates of Vaughan decided to go dramatic with a large, focal water feature at the front entrance. Its outflow connects to a fast-flowing river that tumbles around carefully placed rocks and waterfalls into a lower pond. A bubbling rock provides interest, aeration and white noise. A lower pond nestles the adjacent forest, ringed with native plantings. Multitudes of fish, amphibians and reptiles inhabit the ponds. Raccoons are common, and a fisher came by one spring; herons and other birds are seen daily. A perfect spot for a father and his small son to hang out and feed fish at the end of a busy work day. The lower pool is accessed by a set of Manitoulin stone stairs, with a small flagstone patio set at its edge.

Restrictions influenced the landscape remodel for this home in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood. Sensitive tree protection zones meant stairs and walkways could not be moved. The zones also limited excavation to hand work only. As talented designers often do, Kim Price Landscape Design of Toronto embraced the challenge of overcoming limitations. Hard landscape materials include fieldstone, cedar and steel. A pergola, with century-old beams, contributes an old-world sense of timelessness. Sophisticated plantings make this landscape shine. Long-blooming plants, in a palette of blues, purples, and whites, add drama.

Giving back to the Toronto area community Volunteers revitalize city park Landscape Ontario members take pride in giving back to their neighbours. In 2013, the volunteers who revitalized St. James Park after it was damaged by protestors, were awarded the inaugural Green for Life Community Award, created by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association to recognize projects that benefit the public by creating green spaces within a community. Landscape professionals worked with community members for two days to aerate and amend compacted soil, and lay sod to restore healthy turfgrass on the three hectare site. Area residents were thrilled to once again enjoy their little green gem in the city.

1. Happy Face® Pink Paradise cinquefoil
Cinquefoil, or potentilla, is a recommended choice for hot, sunny spots in the garden. Happy Face® Pink Paradise flowers throughout the summer with pink, semi-double blooms. A low-maintenance plant that will grow 90 cm (3 ft.) tall and wide.

2. White Licorice™ floribunda rose
White LicoriceTM floribunda rose has a delightful perfume – a strong, sweet licorice and lemon scent. This rose needs a sunny spot in your garden and will provide you with a season of bouquets with big wavy blooms and dark green leaves. Grows 90 cm (3 ft.) tall and wide.
3. Supertunia® Limoncello
Supertunia® Limoncello is a vigorous annual petunia hybrid bred to keep blooming in a hot, sunny spot. They have medium to large-sized flowers and can be used as a filler or spiller in containers. Supertunias® can also be planted in the landscape, best near the front. They will bloom all summer, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Limoncello has soft yellow flowers with darker yellow centres. Slow-release fertilizer helps keep these plants full of energy.

4. Pequeña Rosalita™ spider flower
This new annual spider flower, Pequeña Rosalita, will keep flowering in your garden all summer long. Pequeña Rosalita does not self-seed and blooms all along the stem, unlike classic spider flowers which bloom only at the growing point. Pequeña Rosalita has soft pink flowers and dark green leaves. She grows up to 90 cm (36-in) tall, so is a perfect choice to add height and colour in a flower bed.

Homeowners in a new Pickering development have distinguished their property with a minimal, functional, yet sophisticated, landscape design. Betz Pools of Stouffville completed an extensive backyard landscape for the home; the owners asked for a front yard treatment as an afterthought. Designer Mark Luff proposed a swath of lush lawn, punctuated by low boxwood hedges. The centrepiece is a striking maroon Japanese maple. In terms of scale, Luff says this is one of the most modest front yards he has ever done, yet it won a provincial award. In addition to the classic design complementing the home’s architecture, the installation also

provides welcoming and functional living space — connected to the neighbourhood. An understory of hydrangeas sets off the lone Japanese maple; small-scale plantings can have big impact. INSPIRATION in the Barrie area Its location on a fairly busy street has made this home a signature project in Owen Sound; feedback from passers-by is consistently positive.
stylishentrance for a centuryhome Problem: A century home in Owen Sound did not have a front entrance that suited its dignity. Solution: A new treatment from Hutten & Co. Landscaping of Owen Sound provided functionality, colour and a rhythmic structure that respected the property’s heritage.
The new design swept into a large, formalized landing at the front door. Wallstone was selected to tie into the home’s foundation; the innovative curved wall is flanked by large armor stone and capped with natural stone to carry the natural theme throughout. Before

The varied scale and texture of the stonework provides lively interest, plus plenty of opportunity to plant colourful annuals, and still marries perfectly with the home’s architecture. This homeowner was not much into gardening; the request was simply for more curb appeal. Results were thrilling, as the family had not pictured the impact of the design’s colour and flow from the design proposal.

A modest heritage home in Collingwood had become unkempt. Using elegant clean lines and classic formality, The Landmark Group of Thornbury transformed its outdoor space to suit the history of a simpler time.
Diners can now enjoy this backyard garden without distraction from nearby commercial buildings.
Square-cut limestone steps, orderly mass plantings and a cobblestone driveway give the home curb appeal and a stunning first impression. In the backyard, natural stone walls and formal plantings are used to frame an intimate dining patio, where the homeowners can enjoy the fragrance of lavender and view a classic sundial between the rows of flowering pears.

Giving back to the Barrie area community Contemplative outdoor space in Blue Mountain Landscape Ontario members in the Georgian Bay area were involved in building the Cedar Grove Labyrinth in Thornbury. This project has provided an opportunity for all members of the community to enjoy the space, as well as encourage more time being spent outdoors to promote a healthy lifestyle. In addition to the benefits of being outdoors, walking a labyrinth has been linked with stress-relief, improved concentration, and providing a sense of overall calm and well-being.

INSPIRATION in the Hamilton area
The front entrance posed a challenge: a significant height difference that must be dealt with over a short distance. The design solution incorporated a landing, curves and varied proportions to create a safe and attractive entrance.

Landscaping gave this Oakville home character, just as it solved several functional problems for its owner. Replacing a steep flight of entrance steps with a creative layout added interest, plus a spot to watch children play. Materials were chosen to harmonize with the home, and excellent craftsmanship created a great first impression. According to landscape designer Ken Bekendam, the project inspired several neighbours to landscape their front yards, as well. The contractor, Cedar Springs Landscape Group of Oakville, has since been asked to maintain the property, protecting and prolonging the homeowner’s investment. Urns offer easily managed opportunity to add colour splashes all year; ornamental grass provides year-round structure.

After a complete backyard renovation including pool, cabana, deck and patio, a Dundas homeowner was happy with the work, but felt the plantings fell short of expectations. He noticed his landscape featured the same plants he often saw used in commercial parking lots. Shades of Summer Landscaping and Maintenance, based in Millgrove, was hired to complement the work by designing gardens free from a “commercial feel,” as the homeowner put it. Since the landscape’s peak use is in July and August, owner Brad Paton selected plants that look best during those months.

Giving back to the Hamilton area community Shade trees for schools Students at schools in the Hamilton area learn about the importance of urban tree cover and the benefits of trees, thanks to the volunteer members of Landscape Ontario who live and work in the community. For 34 years, members have supported tree planting at local schools in recognition of Arbor Day. Last year, 10 native trees were planted at John William Boich Public School for students to care for and appreciate for years to come.

Landscape Ontario members fully endorse the vision of the Come Alive Outside movement, as they recognize the health, mental, physical, spiritual and emotional benefits of being active outdoors. Our members design, create and maintain spaces for people to live healthier lives, outdoors. This mandate inspired the Landscape Ontario gardens built for Canada Blooms 2014 and 2015. In 2014, Landscape Ontario initiated the Come Alive Outside Design Challenge to encourage students to connect with landscape professionals, to design and build engaging outdoor learning environments at schools and childcare facilities.
Replacing indoor entertainment with outdoor activity Come Alive Outside is an initiative started in 2010, in response to the sedentary, indoor lifestyle that has such a negative impact on our lives today. It is a reminder of what makes our lives healthy and our memories special. Over the past three years, these three words have inspired individuals, families, business and communities across North America to take action to get back outdoors and play.
The design process started with students from horticultural programs meeting with elementary and pre-school students to discover what kind of outdoor spaces were wanted. Everything about this landscape promotes relaxation, including intentional low-maintenance design.

responsiblerelaxation This backyard living area offers beauty, comfort, and privacy — plus an innovative rainwater harvesting system, which irrigates all gardens on this London property; a 3,000-gal. holding tank is hidden beneath the patio. Permeable paving stones were selected for the patio. These pavers offer all the beauty and functionality of traditional stones, yet they allow rainwater to percolate into the tank. The bubbling rock water feature acts as a focal point, and provides the soothing sound of water. It also recirculates water in the holding tank to prevent stagnation. Tydan Landscape Design of London designed and installed this landscape. The patio serves as an outdoor room, extending the home’s living area. The project received a water conservation award.

Giving back to the London area community Veterans Memorial Parkway Landscape Ontario members in the London area are pleased to honour the Canadian Armed Forces by taking an active role in the multi-phased Veterans Memorial Parkway Community Program (VMPCP). In 2014, volunteers planted 600 trees and completed the Landscape Ontario Bravery Garden along the parkway featuring an engraved rock, planting and
lighting installation. They look forward to completing another phase of the project this year. The VMPCP is a partnership between the City of London, the community and local businesses. In 2014, the Canadian Nursery and Landscape Association recognized the VMPCP with its Green for Life community award that recognizes projects that benefit the public by creating green spaces within a community.

This shrub rose was bred in Morden, Man., so it is HARDY! Never Alone rose will bloom from early summer to fall with red flowers with a white to slightly yellow centre. Very good resistance to black spot. Grows 60 cm (2 ft.) tall and 46 cm (1.5 ft. ) wide. A portion of proceeds benefit the Never Alone Foundation, which is dedicated to making sure no patient ever has to battle cancer alone.

cornerONcreativity A grand entranceway was the first objective in the landscape renovation of this postwar Ottawa bungalow. Yards Unlimited Landscaping of Ottawa proposed a walkway of cut natural limestone, purposely laid in a variety of directions. This corner lot offered little privacy or outdoor living space. By creating a cedar screen and incorporating the existing maple into the pergola, an intimate space resulted. Plantings were chosen for four-season interest. This home is a great example of how a professional can use colour, form and texture to create rich effect.

Giving back to the Ottawa area community Honour and respect Volunteering time and experience to beautify and maintain public gardens is a regular activity for Landscape Ontario members living and working in the Ottawa area. Members maintain the gardens at the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivor’s Park from spring until fall every year.
For the last 10 years, LO’s professional members volunteer for the annual Day of Tribute to the military and its families when they spend a day readying the grounds of the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood for Remembrance Day ceremonies, Nov. 11. Ottawa-area landscape professionals are pleased to make a special effort to prepare these hallowed grounds out of honour and respect for the fallen soldiers of our country.

‘Alexander’s Great’ brunnera
This new plant has gigantic silvery leaves that create a show-stopping effect in the shady garden. ‘Alexander’s Great’ is a perennial that blooms with small blue forget-me-not-like flowers in spring. The dramatic leaves are deer resistant, and do well in part-to-full shady locations. Grows about 35 cm (14 in. tall) and spreads 75 cm (30 in.) wide.

Sedge is one of the few grasses that grow in shade. Evercolor® Everillo forms a cascading mound of bright, lime-green leaves that turn yellow-gold as they mature. The outstanding colour and texture makes this a choice plant for containers, edging or in the rock garden. The leaf colour holds best in shade or part shade. Forms a soft-textured mound 40-45 cm (16-18 in.) tall.

The owners of this renovated Victorian home asked for an inviting backyard to provide a safe space for healthy outdoor activities for their young children.
The Scott Wentworth Design Group of Picton created large flagstone seating terraces that link the home and new deck with the pool, and provide extended living and dining areas outside. A careful selection of plants chosen for their seasonal colour and complementary textures soften the fence lines and enhance privacy. This young, active family wanted space for outdoor creative play; their new lawn with inset steps is both functional and appealing.

Giving back to the Kingston area community A warm welcome The Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, will benefit from a beautification project this year thanks to Landscape Ontario (LO) volunteer members and The Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise. This lovely backyard shows how a creative designer and experienced construction crew can maximize the usable area in a small space. Derek Lippert of Quiet Nature, Ayr, placed a large deck, dining patio and small pond close to this home, so the owners could enjoy their time outdoors in summer.
A lawn area for children to play safely was a must. Clear panels around the pond keep sightlines open.

Inspired by the gardens of Provence, the owners of this Waterloo home wanted a formal yet welcoming planting. They called on Melissa McKerlie of It’s About Thyme Garden Design and Landscaping in Stratford to create a Canadian interpretation of the sun-washed gardens of southern France. A symmetrical, formal garden anchored by a classically-styled fountain now welcomes visitors to the home. Blowsy lavender borders contrast beautifully with natural flagstone recreating the desired look.
A precise palette of plants surround an intimate seating area where the homeowners can relax and enjoy sunset views over neighbouring farmland. The combination of clipped boxwoods and billowing perennials create a Mediterranean atmosphere.
McKerlie chose hydrangea cultivars, ornamental pears and columnar evergreens to complete the French garden theme. This project shows impact that a professional landscape designer can make with the careful selection and placement of plants.

Giving back to the Waterloo area community Greening schoolyards Every year, Landscape Ontario members living and working in the tri-city area, renovate and redesign the outdoor playground of a local school. Schools submit a written proposal to be considered for this honour, and in 2014, the recipient was Stanley Park Public School in Kitchener. The playground now includes shade trees and an outdoor classroom with armour stone seats.
Staff and students of Stanley Park will be responsible for the maintenance of their new green space, providing an opportunity for students to be active outdoors and learn about their natural environment. Over the last nine years, volunteers have created Green For Life spaces at 11 area schools, and donated over $350,000 worth of landscaping back to the community in the form of materials and equipment.

1. Little Quick Fire hydrangea

A new, dwarf form of Quick Fire that is one third the size of the original parent. The creamy white flowers turn to deep burgundy red as the summer progresses. A perfect accent for a small spot, Little Quick Fire grows 90-150 cm (3-5 ft.) tall, and rounds out the dwarf collection of small hydrangeas that includes Bobo and Little Lime hydrangea.
1. Tiny Wine™ ninebark
Tiny Wine™ is a dense shrub with small, refined leaves. It is a wonderful cold-hardy native plant, perfectly sized for home gardens. The flower show is exceptional, with dainty flowers blooming up and down the stem in a very show display in late spring. The dark bronze-maroon foliage keeps its colour all season and contrasts beautifully with the white flowers.
3. SunPatiens® impatiens

SunPatiens were introduced several years ago, and are a great alternative to traditional impatiens, as they are resistant to impatiens downy mildew. They will grow in sun or shade, rain or shine, and provide nonstop annual colour from spring until frost. Sunpatiens is available in several new colours this year, including pink, magenta, scarlet and white.
4. Jurassic Rex begonias
The Jurassic series of Rex begonias is ideal for gardens or containers in deep shade environments. The foliage is available in bold patterns and colours that will stand out in the landscape. The plants flower late in the season, meaning the unusual leaves are the best asset. Jurrasic begonias can grow up to 40 cm (16 in.) tall and 30 cm (12 in.) wide.

This backyard was made for entertaining! Kitchen, bar, pool, hot tub and lounging areas all work together and a gas fire pit and two fire bowls keep it cozy and warm on cool evenings.
contemporarylevels The owners of this home wanted their back yard to be a family-friendly space to entertain large groups of people. By involving the landscape designer at the same time an architect was creating plans for an outdoor kitchen and bar, the elements of the backyard work seamlessly with the new addition.
The backyard has four tiered patios, each with its own function. The Landscape Effects Group of Belle River cleverly created different levels around the pool to give the impression it has been sunken in the garden, when it is actually at grade.
The plants chosen are simple and sleek to follow the modern lines of the new pool and patio. Boxwood hedging and ornamental grasses have been used in the large planters.
The original deck was too small and a lot of the large backyard was underused.

Giving back to the Windsor area community Lending a helping hand Landscape Ontario (LO) members living and working in the Windsor area volunteered time and materials to update the grounds around the Safety Village last fall. Children, parents and teachers using this community resource now enjoy learning in a rejuvenated outdoor environment. Members will complete phase two of the garden renovation this year.
Several years ago, LO members designed and built gardens at the Hospice of Windsor. In the years since, members continue to update and maintain the gardens annually. Last year, landscape lighting was installed in the arbors within the Solidarity gardens, allowing extended use of the restful gardens.
