However, ever since the railway track elevation, the banding space beneath the bridge has been capable of connecting the surrounding communities, creating diverse outdoor activity space, thereby stimulating the opportunity for the transformation of the space. “Railway Track Elevation for Yilan City – Construction of Living Corridor from Old Railway Space” is one such living corridor spatial design project taking priority of the surrounding residents' demands as the core. This project goes alongside the railway bridge with a length of approximately 5Km, connecting Yilan City with Lotong Township - the two core areas of Yilan County. It has currently completed the fourth phase of engineering with a length of approximately 3Km. Differing from the majority of green corridor spaces along the riverbanks in the county running from east and the west, this living corridor runs south and the north. After the construction is completed, it will connect significant areas including Yilan City, Yilan Sports Park, County Government Building, Lotong Sports Park and Lotong Township. The station was an unused space filled with weeds prior to development. A portion of the great quantity of earth within the station was used as the fill for gabions, thereby creating a natural waterway bank and accomplishing the balanced usage of the earth within the station. Differing from conventional gabions, the bags filled with earth inside the gabion feature water retention, are pervious to water and plants may grow there, accomplish the greening effect. They may also be used to cultivate vegetables, thereby creating diverse arable land art along the way. The design is developed based mainly on sculpturing a living corridor, taking into consideration the users' demands for the design, allowing a width of road suitable for walking and cycling. Moreover, pocket spaces are utilized for construction of exercise facilities or resting seats, providing people with social and sports spaces, while the slide constructed based on the drop height of the terrain is further favored by children. It is an adequately designed space taking into consideration the activity demands of different age groups.

Design Key Points 1. Taking local residents' living demands as the core value, instead of being tourism-oriented, allows the unused old railway space to transform into a living corridor landscape design. 2. The sheltering space beneath the “huge camp” of elevated railway track provides diverse outdoor activities uninfluenced by the change of seasons. The corridor connects the surrounding communities to create social opportunities, allowing the surrounding residents to interact with the old railway space. 3. The waterway space is organized using gabions, while the bags are filled with earth to provide the functions of water retention and permeability, such that plants may grow on them to accomplish a greening effect. The use of gabions allows for dual functions including greening and practicality. 4. Art teachers and students from schools within the county are invited to work together to participate in the art creations for the public space, stimulating Yilan local students' creativity to display their feelings towards Yilan.
