PONDEROSA ELEMENTARY

Ponderosa Elementary sits in Box Elder, South Dakota. As the region’s population quickly increases due to military services, the current school district is not meeting enrollment needs. Ponderosa Elementary, a 130,000 SF school, serves over six-hundred students and offers insight of the natural learning environment. Through the utilization of biophilic design, Ponderosa Elementary stimulates cognitive development, cooperation, and curiosity; this is achieved through nature IN the space patterns, natural analogue patterns, and nature OF the space patterns. The main principles that guided the development of the school are: security, creative learning environment, and community.

Ponderosa Elementary achieves its goals of security, creative learning environment, and community through a couple different modes. The project utilizes biophilic design to promote student development through the different types of learning. As a result the project entices students to be connected to their local community, whether it be the natural or built environment. In doing so, the school allows for a flexible facade design to promote outdoor learning and indoor learning.

THE WEBWORK CENTER

The Webwork Center is a multicultural center located within Centenial Mall, near the Nebraska State Capitol building. The purpose of this project is to bring the needs and wants of the people to attention and quantify these needs within the library. The Pershing Center near the Nebraska State Capitol is due for demolition. In doing so, the Webwork Center maintains key aspects from the former building, while still introducing new organic geometry to the downtown area. With geometries founded off the curves of a polyester sheet, the Webwork Center allows for a user to experience a more lively Centennial Mall. This building is divided into three segments within the overall layout; learn, engage, and remember. To invoke the public interest and nostalgia of the Pershing Center, the Webwork Center preserves and restores the auditorium floor, north façade, and the mural that so many remember. The library serves the people with many different aspects from public user systems and private-based classes. Webwork Center responds to both the history of Lincoln and the modernity of the current era. It is a connection of the past, present, and future.
