CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2024

A LETTER FROM OUR CEO

A company’s success comes from more than just delivering quality products. It also comes from cultivating a strong, values-driven culture. At Land O’Frost, I am proud to lead an organization built on a foundation of trust and respect for each other, our communities, and our resources.

My grandfather, Antoon Van Eekeren, started Land O’Frost in 1941 with little more than an entrepreneurial spirit and determination to strive toward excellence. He believed in dismantling silos, instead working as one team to solve challenges and achieve goals for the benefit of our consumers and customers. These values were passed down to my father and then to me, creating a legacy of trust and care that continues to this day.

My vision is to honor that legacy by making sure Land O’Frost remains a place where the focus is always on family, where everyone is empowered to be a leader, and where giving back is just part of who we are.

This report speaks to the social responsibility that sits at the heart of our company. Today, I’m heartened by consumers’ strong preference for brands that demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability and quality. I hope this report illustrates our ongoing dedication to being good stewards, whose passion for innovation drives us to seek opportunities to give back and do better.

For over 80 years, we have used our past successes to improve the future. We know that leading with compassion—which I believe is a combination of empathy plus action—can make all the difference. So, from caring for families to caring for our planet, we set the bar high to ensure we’re producing a lasting, positive impact. It’s an honor to lead this organization alongside our 1,200 incredible team members who exemplify our values every day. Together, we will continue to lead with our hearts to make our workplaces, communities, and world better for everyone, striving to make each day more fulfilling than the last.

OUR STORY

Focused on Feeding Families Since 1941

As a family-owned and operated business focused on nourishing America’s families, we understand the importance of being a good neighbor and giving back to the community. In fact, we were founded on those ideals.

In 1941, when few American homes had freezers, families on the south side of Chicago found it difficult to store meats and other perishable foods. So, newly arrived Dutch immigrant Antoon Van Eekeren decided to open a community freezer, renting cold storage space to his neighbors who wanted a reliable way to preserve fresh-tasting food.

Van Eekeren later maintained his mission to help put wholesome food on families’ tables by selling frozen meat pies, TV dinners, and sliced meat under the Land O’Frost name. In 1958, his company was officially incorporated.

Land O’Frost has continued to grow since then, with Van Eekeren’s son and grandson upholding the company’s family-oriented approach and tradition of excellence.

Today, Land O’Frost is the country’s largest privately held sliced deli meat brand. We support more than 1,200 team members and 8 different brands that serve millions of people across the U.S.

CEO and President David Van Eekeren represents the third generation of family ownership, following in the footsteps of his father, Paul, and grandfather, Antoon.

We’re proud to be a family-owned company that still feels like a family. The Land O’Frost team rallies behind national, community-based, and philanthropic partnerships to encourage its neighbors to engage in healthy, active lifestyles. Now, as always, we remain focused on providing families with wholesome, affordable, high-quality food.

FOOD SAFETY

Beyond Compliance: Raising the Bar

Nothing matters more to Land O’Frost than their customers’ trust, which they have earned through an unwavering commitment to food safety and quality. From sourcing the finest ingredients to adhering to rigorous safety standards, the team at Land O’Frost continuously works to ensure their products are the best they can be.

To safeguard the health and well-being of the people we serve, Land O’Frost embraces a culture of food safety, which involves prioritizing collaboration, innovation, information-sharing, and constant vigilance.

WE CONSIDER FOOD SAFETY A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Every Land O’Frost product reflects the team and suppliers’ dedication to delivering safe, high-quality food that consumers can enjoy with confidence.

Land O’Frost’s experienced food safety team works collaboratively with production, maintenance, and other staff to proactively address food safety and quality issues, teaming up to spot improvement opportunities and troubleshoot problems.

Since Land O’Frost purchases all its ingredients, its suppliers’ approach to food safety is also critical to its quality efforts. The company partners with suppliers to share best practices, explore new ideas, and address challenges, encouraging shared learning across the food supply chain.

At least once a year, Land O’Frost holds safety-focused workshops with suppliers and teams to review data, discuss the latest trends and regulations, and share updates on ongoing initiatives. While communication with suppliers happens year-round, these workshops provide a dedicated forum to align on new ideas, solutions, and next steps.

ENSURING CONTAMINANT-FREE PRODUCTS IS A TOP PRIORITY

Ensuring customer safety while enjoying their products is a top priority for Land O’Frost. This commitment is upheld through a rigorous approach to food safety, starting with proactive cross-contamination prevention.

Several of the company’s facilities, including Lansing, Madisonville, and Searcy, have earned “Excellent” ratings in food safety.

The company adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), industryapproved guidelines designed to prevent contamination. Employees are trained to follow these practices diligently, including proper hand-washing techniques, correct procedures for donning gloves and gowns, and adhering to strict traffic patterns within the production line. These activities are closely monitored by line leads and supervisors as part of Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures (SSOPs) checks.

Understanding that the production line is operated by both machines and people, Land O’Frost prioritizes safety from the recruitment stage, ensuring that new hires recognize the importance of food safety. New employees are supported by job coaches, and all staff participate in annual training sessions to stay updated on industry best practices. Safety protocols extend to operations, requiring employees to follow strict procedures, such as changing gear, before moving between production lines. Traffic within the facility is carefully managed to prevent the transfer of microorganisms between areas.

LAND O’FROST’S LANSING, MADISONVILLE, AND SEARCY FACILITIES HAVE EARNED “EXCELLENT” RATINGS IN FOOD SAFETY.

Maintenance staff are also integrated into the safety procedures, receiving training on proper handling of tools and equipment, particularly during production. Equipment is tagged for thorough sanitation, as required, ensuring tools remain free from harmful microorganisms.

To verify the effectiveness of cross-contamination prevention efforts, the company uses operational microbiological swabs, ensuring the highest standards of safety are met.

WE FOLLOW THE LATEST LABELING AND TRANSPARENCY GUIDELINES

Land O’Frost takes pride in keeping customers informed, with clear labels that detail exactly what goes into their products. Known for their naturally smoked flavor, every Land O’Frost product is carefully packaged in the United States.

WE’RE PROACTIVE ABOUT GETTING THE PROPER CERTIFICATIONS

To continuously deliver the highest quality products, we ensure that we comply with all relevant laws and regulations.

• Through the FDA’s Listeria Control Guidelines, we aim to protect the food supply from dangerous contaminants.

• We remain up to date on various animal welfare regulations, including CA Proposition 12 and MA 2016 Q3. These laws address farm animal welfare by setting specific standards for the treatment of animals used in food production. We require all direct suppliers to certify compliance with these laws.

• As part of the Meat Institute’s Protein PACT we remain committed to ensuring its products come from healthy animals who are humanely cared for. The Protein PACT directs all members of the protein supply chain to engage in the ethical treatment of animals by adhering to globally recognized welfare standards and increasing transparency in animal care practices.

• We proactively obtain and maintain Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification to ensure our food safety and quality management systems meet the highest standards.

OUR SHARED APPROACH TO FOOD SAFETY HELPS US ALL IMPROVE

By working closely with suppliers, trade associations and industry work groups, Land O’Frost’s cross-functional teams are raising the bar on food safety, ensuring the best possible products for the consumers who rely on us to deliver healthy foods for their families.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION

Our Commitment, Progress, and Impact

At Land O’Frost, we don’t just talk about sustainability—it’s a core value we integrate into everything we do, every day.

Whether Land O’Frost is striving to reduce its carbon footprint, conserve resources, or collaborate with others in the industry to advance greener operations, we are working diligently to protect the planet for current and future generations.

WE’VE SET AMBITIOUS GOALS

Land O’Frost has promised to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5% by 2025.

To better understand the environmental impact, we report greenhouse gas emissions data annually to several groups working to address climate change, including the Climate Disclosure Project, ClimatePartner and Project Gigaton We also share data with industry associations, including the Meat Institute.

From 2020 to 2023 we have cut Scope 2 emissions—those calculated based on the energy we use—by 2,634 metric tons. This is equivalent to taking powering or preserving

627

344

3,076 cars off homes for acres of the road a year forest

In 2024, Land O’ Frost reduced Scope 2 emissions by 701 metric tons.

AND WE’RE NOT STOPPING THERE

Land O’Frost continues to find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Its Corporate Sustainability Team meets quarterly to review energy use, waste and emissions, prioritizing projects that get us closer to its goals. At the same time, employees are constantly thinking of ways to improve. They are encouraged to contribute by submitting new ideas, participating in energy meetings, and actively supporting sustainability efforts across company facilities.

WE’RE COMMITTED TO CONSUMING LESS ENERGY

Reducing energy consumption is a top priority for Land O’Frost. There are several ways that we’re tackling this task.

EQUIPPING OUR FLEET WITH THE LATEST INNOVATIONS

Land O’Frost has its own fleet of trucks and other vehicles, and we invest in improvements each year to increase their fuel efficiency.

51 Land O’Frost trucks have Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) that help reduce idling emissions—a key source of unnecessary energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

WE’RE COMMITTED TO CONSUMING LESS ENERGY

51

LAND O’FROST TRUCKS HAVE AUXILIARY POWER UNITS (APUs)

An APU uses one gallon of diesel fuel per day (8 hours) while an idling truck engine uses one gallon of diesel fuel per hour.

In addition to modernizing their fleet, they educate drivers on reducing idle time and out-of-route miles, further lowering energy consumption. With their own fleet, they can schedule trucks on the most direct routes and utilize return trips to bring back raw materials, maximizing efficiency and fleet utilization.

OPTIMIZING REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS

Several of their manufacturing plants have been exploring more efficient use of refrigeration systems through compressor sequencing—operating only the number of compressors necessary to meet refrigeration demand at any given time. Through this sequencing program, it is estimated that their energy consumption has decreased by 742,342 kWh annually!

EMBRACING EVEN THE SIMPLEST INTERVENTIONS

By switching to LED lighting and implementing variable frequency drives (VFD), many of their facilities are becoming more energy efficient. They also maintain peak equipment performance by conducting regular air leak audits to identify and repair leaks quickly.

COMMITTED TO REDUCING WASTE

Land O’Frost consistently seeks opportunities to minimize manufacturing waste, recycle, and reduce the amount of material sent to landfills. Some of their top priorities include:

Using more environmentally friendly manufacturing

materials

Land O’Frost uses flexible packaging for most of its products. This type of packaging uses fewer raw materials than rigid plastic forms and occupies a smaller space in shipping containers and on the shelf. Discarded flexible packaging also takes up less space in landfills and has been proven to have a lower carbon footprint than many alternative packaging styles.

We are committed to using flexible packaging and continue to work with our suppliers to improve it, finding ways to decrease plastic content and increase recyclability.

Consuming less water during manufacturing

Several facilities have taken steps to reduce water consumption in the product stuffing process, without compromising quality, by slowing down water streams and installing misters. Valves have also been installed in areas where hydraulic pumps are cooled, ensuring water is used only when necessary.

From 2020 to 2023, water consumption across the plant network was reduced by over 1.4 million gallons.

Prioritizing recycling

Land O’Frost currently recycles a variety of materials, including oil, pallets, empty drums, batteries, and paper.

Cardboard is the biggest focus area.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 17 trees are saved for every ton of paper recycled each year. In 2023, Land O’Frost recycled 397 tons of cardboard.

6,749 THAT’S EQUAL TO SAVING 6,749 TREES IN A SINGLE YEAR!

And while we’re pleased with that accomplishment, we know we can do more. In 2024, we partnered with a new cardboard recycler that diverted even more cardboard waste from landfills.

Other recycling initiatives include:

• Converting water fountains to water bottle filling stations to save 65,098 water bottles from potentially going to landfill.

• Exploring new ways to recycle unused or obsolete packaging film, so it doesn’t end up in landfill.

EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES

Over the past several years, Land O’Frost has increased its commitment to renewable energy solutions.

In 2022, Land O’Frost launched a solar project in its traffic operations facility. This initiative has helped to reduce the amount of electricity utilized from the grid.

20,724

THAT’S EQUAL TO CONSUMING 20,724 FEWER GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL.

Two of its manufacturing locations have partnered with CLEAResult to further identify and drive energy savings opportunities. One location has saved more than 2.2 million kWh of electricity since 2020.

Land O’Frost’s ongoing dedication to renewable energy is on display at its Munster, Indiana headquarters. We have two electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot and have built a partially green roof. We’ve also incorporated natural sunlight as part of the building’s design.

WE’RE A LEADER IN THE MEAT INDUSTRY’S SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

As a Meat Institute member, Land O’Frost collaborates with others in the meat industry to share ideas and implement best practices.

In 2022, Land O’Frost joined the Protein PACT—a Meat Institute-led initiative to promote sustainable practices and address environmental, animal welfare, and human health concerns across the protein supply chain. The Protein PACT uses measurable benchmarks and annual reporting to track progress, and Land O’Frost has been an active participant in this work.

Throughout the years, the Meat Institute has recognized Land O’Frost’s efforts to embed sustainable practices in its facilities.

• In 2024, three plants earned Tier 1 status at the Meat Institute’s annual recognition awards. The Lansing, Madisonville, and Searcy facilities were each recognized for their positive environmental impact and for achieving the highest level of worker safety performance.

• Land O’Frost has also earned Tier 1 status for its

• Adoption of pollution prevention, preventive maintenance, and emergency response plans

• Monitoring of water use, wastewater discharge, air emissions, and hazardous waste generation

• Emissions reduction, energy conservation, packaging and food waste reduction, technological innovation, and water conservation

This is the tenth consecutive year that Land O’Frost has been recognized in the industry for these important achievements.

For 12 years in a row, Land O’Frost has earned the Meat Institute Award of Honor for performance in employee safety. This achievement reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to creating a secure and healthy work environment.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Land O’Frost will continue to live into its core values as we strive to make each day more fulfilling than the last. By being a good neighbor and steward of the Earth’s resources, we aim to create a positive impact that resonates with customers, communities, and the planet. We look forward to deepening partnerships with trade associations, climate change organizations, and industry work groups leading the way in change. With ambitious goals and collaborative efforts, we remain committed to shaping a brighter, more fulfilling future for everyone.
