On the outskirts of Inverness, Tomnahurich Hill is a small hill, now the site of a modern cemetery, surrounded by tales of fairies. Fairies were tiny yet powerful magical folk in Scottish folklore. They were often feared, as if you upset or offended them, you would suffer the consequences.
The most famous mythical creature in Scotland, nick-named Nessie, is an aquatic serpentine beast which, according to legend, lurks at the bottom of Loch Ness. Have you spotted her yet?
For years, visions of ghosts have been a common sight around Culloden. Legend has it that, on 16th April every year, battle-weary “anniversary ghosts” soldier on to fight the good fight. And once again, the unmistakable sounds of swords ringing and men falling echo across the moor.
A lawless and roadless part of Britain where rebellions were frequent, the Highlands were once a major headache for the government. To control the region, forts and barracks were built and linked by new roads and bridges. The area around Inverness is an excellent place to get an idea of the effort and investment that went into pacifying the Highlands not so long ago.
To the west, forts were constructed at Fort Augustus (1730) and Fort William (1690), though little remains today of the actual forts. Inverness Castle was strengthed in 1725 and renamed Fort George. This fort did not last long. It was captured and blown up by the Jacobite army in 1746, though not without an accident. The walls were mined by a French officer who blew himself and his dog up in the process. The dog is said to have survived minus its tail.
A few months later, on Drumossie Moor, just outside Inverness, the last Jacobite rebellion ended at the Battle of Culloden. Here on April 16th 1746 the Government army of about 9,000 men, under the Duke of Cumberland, inflicted a disastrous defeat on a Jacobite force of around 6,000. This was the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil.
A massive new Fort George, still occupied by the army, but open to the public, was built to control the seaward approaches to Inverness. It was completed in 1770 but never saw a shot fired in anger.
The most important Highland city for over a thousand years, Inverness has been a Royal Burgh since around 1153. The dominant building, overlooking the original crossing place of the River Ness, is Inverness Castle. Forts and castles have stood on the site from the earliest days.
The castle was used as a Court House, completed in 1838, and a prison built in the 1840s but vacated in 1903 when all prisoners were moved just up the hill to the then new Porterfield Prison. You can walk round the outside of the castle from where there are outstanding views over the city and river.
One of the most prominent buildings to the north is the Old High Church – Inverness’s original parish church. Churches have stood on this spot since at least the 12th century. The tower dates from the 15th – 16th century. After the Battle of Culloden, in 1746, the building was used as a prison for Jacobite prisoners. The main church was re-built in the 1770s.
There are several historic buildings nearby, notably Abertarff House built in 1596. Closer to the centre of town is Inverness’s ‘souk’, the Victorian Market re-built in 1890-91 following a fire. It has a wide range of speciality shops and food hall.
Cawdor Castle is a living home, visit the rooms that are still used to this day by the Dowager Countess Cawdor. DID you know?
Beautifully carved stones with bears, wolves, salmon, wild boar, mythical beasts and other Pictish symbols can be found throughout this corner of the Highlands - a stronghold of the Picts between about 300 and 900AD. After the Picts converted to Christianity in about 600AD, they started to erect exquisite, tall, cross-slabs with intricate designs. These are usually found close to old churches where all too often they had been broken up and used as building material, only to be rediscovered in the 1800s or later.
An excellent collection of Pictish symbol stones and cross-slabs is on display in the Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie. The Inverness Museum has a unique Pictish pendant featuring a cross and an intertwined serpent. At the old church at Nigg you’ll discover one of the finest Pictish cross-slabs in Scotland. Just to the east of Inverness, near Forres, is the impressive, 7 metre tall Sueno’s Stone. It has a cross on one side, and detailed battle scene on the other.
A visit to the 5* Loch Ness Centre is essential for a truly fascinating experience, revealing the history and natural wonders of the world’s most famous loch along with its famous legend - The Loch Ness Monster.

For a cruise on the world-famous Loch Ness and a visit to Urquhart Castle, a fleet of four vessels sail, year-round, from various departure points on the Caledonian Canal and at the west end of the loch. Some cruises are served by a direct bus from Inverness bus station. Other boats sail from Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus. Whether you are monster hunting or taking in the spectacular scenery, a visit to Loch Ness will surely be one of the highlights of your trip.
Tales of a large monster living deep beneath the dark expanses of Loch Ness have circulated the world since the first photograph emerged in 1933, the loch itself contains more water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined, and it is surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland. A visit to Loch Ness is not to be missed.
Head east to the sea and the Moray Firth if you want to be more certain of seeing wildlife! This is the best spot in Britain to see bottlenose dolphins close up, with trips departing from Inverness Harbour, Avoch, and Cromarty. Experts estimate that around 130 bottlenose dolphins live in the Moray Firth. The dolphins often leap clear of the water close to the shore. Harbour seals are also a common sight, hauled out on mudbanks and sandy shores. Further out, harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, pilot whales and killer whales can sometimes be seen.

The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is the largest house in the highlands, with 189 rooms and is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s
The Gardens were laid out in 1850 by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who was responsible for the Victorian extension to the Castle and who designed the Houses of Parliament. The arrangement of the Gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, have changed little in the 150 years since they were planted. Despite its location so far north, the sheltered Gardens are able to support a surprising range of plants.
The Museum - Open 10.30am to 4pm Built by William, Earl of Sutherland as a Summer House and extended by the 3rd Duke, the Museum houses a collection of hunting trophies and other items brought from all over the world, together with many objects of interest presented to the Museum by friends of the Sutherland family.

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan. Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.
We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.
The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.
