Specialist support services and products for the offshore sector A legacy of Great Yarmouth’s long association with the offshore sector is the range of support companies offering specialised services. A good example is in the field of geosciences, where companies provide expert advice, products and services relating to surveys and preparation work for offshore developments. Gardline Marine Sciences A major player in this sector is the marine contractor Gardline Marine Sciences Ltd (GMSL), which specialises in geophysical, hydrographic, environmental, oceanographic and geotechnical surveys. GMSL has its head office in Great Yarmouth, with other offices in the UK, the USA, the Arabian Gulf, Australia and South East Asia. The company employs over 1,000 staff worldwide including 300 based in Great Yarmouth.

Gardline has a long association with Great Yarmouth, having been established in 1969 by George Darling as Gardline Shipping. Today, GMSL embraces 11 companies (see panel) in separate but related fields.

GMSL operates a fleet of multi-role vessels, permanently mobilised, to carry out geotechnical surveys and other services for the oil and gas industry. The fleet includes nine multi-role survey vessels which operate in Australia, Brazil, West Africa and South East Asia as well as the North Sea.
