n the near future, container handling will be focused on Contecar – currently a multipurpose terminal. The work of developing Contecar into a major container hub will take several years. Port of Cartagena plans to increase its container handling capacity to 2.3 million TEUs in a phased program of expansion. In the first phase, its capacity will be increased to 450,000 TEUs by building additional ship berths and installing ship-to-shore and yard equipment. Work on this initial phase began in January 2008. Depth alongside will be increased to 45 ft and the next step will be to extend the quay length by 300 meters through land fills.
New equipment Contecar has already invested in container handling equipment, with three new rubber tired gantry cranes (RTGs) delivered in December 2007 and one Gottwald mobile crane of 100 tonnes capacity, reaching a total of 3 mobile cranes with identical specifications.

l objetivo en el futuro cercano es transformar a Contecar, en un centro de Centro de Distribución Logística y de Trasbordo para el mundo. De esta forma Contecar aumentará su capacidad para manejar contenedores en la terminal a 2.3 millones de TEUs, con un programa de expansión por etapas. En la primera etapa, su capacidad se ampliará a 450,000 TEUs al crear sitios de atraque adicionales e instalar nuevo equipo de manejo. Los trabajos de esta etapa iniciaron en enero del 2008 con el aumento de la profundidad del área de maniobra a 45 pies. Mientras el siguiente paso consiste en aumentar la longitud del muelle (300 metros) mediante recuperación de suelo.
Nuevo equipo Contecar ha invertido en nuevos equipos portuarios para manejar contenedores, que incluyen tres grúas de patio (RTGs), y que entraron en operación en 2008.
