Land+Civilization Compositions (L+CC) is a Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Rotterdam based office that works and collaborates on issues related to built form, with a portfolio scope from research to design. We seek to interactively and informally brainstorm through some of our current questions about the formation of our built environment, over our past and current work in a variety of countries I contexts. The works of the office do not seek to merely design buildings, landscapes, or cities. Instead LCC harnesses the myriad of systems that are the backbone of our shared habitats – the movement of people, the flow of water/air, and

INNOVATION AS DRIVER FOR NATURE AND LEISURE PROGRAMS LOLA,TALLER和L + CC赢得了中国深圳光明一个占地600公顷的森林和体育公园的国际 竞赛。 LOLA, TALLER and L+CC won the international competition for a 600 hectare forest and sports park in Guang Ming, Shenzhen, China. The other competitors were JCFO, SWA and TCL. As this metropolitan region finds its success in innovative industries, the park focuses on innovation in sports and ecology. Two R&D centers, one for sports, one for botany are centrally located in the park. From here, a constant evolution and diversification of the park will take place. On the central park loop, a linear plant and tree nursery is integrated. An elevated path connects the park to the city and the forest; forming a scenic route that passes by all different types of forest. A series of pavilions, that host functions like restaurant, restroom, viewing platform and forest cabin, is modular an prefabricated, to minimize environmental impact.

A 21ST CENTURY WATERFRONT PARK FOR THE 21ST CENTURY CITY LOLA,TALLER和L + CC赢得了中国深圳最重要的滨水公园之一深圳湾公园的国际竞赛。 Shenzhen Bay Park is separated from the city by large car roads. The current bridges and tunnels are not enough to overcome the barrier. To improve its isolated position, more and better connections are needed between the city and the park: generous underpasses, attractive new pedestrian bridges, or even a new roof park on top of the car road. The water network could play a key role in creating new and better connections. Eventually, the waterfront could transform from a hard edge into a series of peninsulas and islands, tied together by roads and paths. This long term vision could be realized step by step, by linking the ambition to the sequential transformation of the different urban quarters that border the park. Next to physical connections, the park should be also linked to the city in a programmatic way, so the city benefits from the park and the park benefits from the city. In order to create meaningful connections, 8 park zones have been identified, which are linked to the 8 urban zones next to the park. Also the bay itself should be connected in a better way to the park: the current promenade offers a very singular experience of the void. This can be diversified dramatically. By extending the park towards the bay via a series of programmed piers, people can enjoy the water, the nature and the openness in multiple ways.

A NEW CENTRE WITH URBAN NEW BIOTOPES AND LAYERED LANDSCAPES
Qianhai is the new habitat of Shenzhen. It is a new opportunity for exhibiting endless possibilities of “city+nature”. In this highly dense centre, new nature is beyond greenness. It is an integration of culture and biodiversity, fostering linkage between people-people, people-nature and people-city. A system of 12 new biotope typologies is structured by 3 different corridors (Natural Corridor, Urban Grids and Cultural Corridor). In the South, with flowing valley as a redefined air corridor, people experience different natural intensity and uniquely programmed biotopes integrated both vertically and horizontally. In the North, the relationship between public spaces and cultural facilities is reinterpreted. The proposal not only creates new nature for Qianhai, but it also serves as methodology for spaces throughout the district. Qianhai is a brand new city with a flowing biotope for fresh urban+nature experiences. The flowing biotope will be a natural oasis for Qianhai, where biodiversity can truly flourish. It will be a civic belt for Qianhai, where cultural diversity is enhanced and celebrated. It will be a nourishing medium for Qianhai, where layers of urban and natural functions are intimately inter- woven into a new composition of contemporary public space.

A HERITAGE PARK WITH A FRESH TAKE ON HISTORY AND ECOLOGY Lychee park is a great park, it has a beautiful lake, trees and spaces, therefore, it’s functionally perfect and full of population of all ages, an aspect that makes it very popular in Shenzhen. However, the continuous dense growing of city in the park surroundings will make it under-equipped for the future demands of program and citizens.Further improvement of the park needs to prepare it for the future, while preserving the existing qualities and highlight them as park identity, to reach that goal, we propose a densification strategy, in which the future pressure on Lychee Park will be divided according to zoning: some parts will remain quiet and some other will become more active and urban. Next to that our proposal uses the improvement of the park to improve its ecology, its coherence in materials and its connections with the city through development of 4 urban areas: The quiet traditional lakes, the dense central lake, the active lychee meadows and the park border.

A PUBLIC PARK STRATEGY FOR ONE OF MOSCOW’S LARGEST PARKS Sokolniki Park is the largest and most visited park in Moscow, covering 520 hectares. Built during the reign of Peter the Great, the park has developed into an urban forest with many planned park developments, comparable to Tiergarten Park in Berlin and the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. Every two years, Sokolniki Park introduces a new theme, including a signature project, several small-scale adjustments, and a number of debates and presentations on reconstruction and maintenance. Over the next 14 years, the park will undergo a transformation, creating a sustainable transport link to the city, improving the park's entrances and attractions, renovating the park's axes and adaptable pavilions, and enhancing the ecological quality. One of the main components is the creation of a resilient signature project. A two-kilometer-long greenhouse will be built along the park's central axis. Visitors walking through the greenhouse will be able to see many examples of the park's past resilience. At the same time, visitors will be able to see the site of the famous kitchen debate. The axis of the greenhouse was created by relocating the existing Moscow municipal nursery. This huge space in the forest will be transformed into a huge open-air space for barbecues, sunbathing and playing. The vegetation in the greenhouse will be highly diversified, thus creating a diverse ecology. At the same time, vegetables will be grown in the greenhouse to provide ingredients for the park's restaurants.

A PROPOSAL FOR BANDIRMA PARK IN TURKEY The central strip is the heart of the park and forms a grand square in front of the design institute. It ends in a roof terrace overlooking the Sea of Marmara and Bandirma and sets a clear visual relation between city, port, sea and campus. The strip organizes the activities of the design institute and at the same time it’s suitable for large events, like a design biennale, a film festival or an art fair. The design institute unties with a single gesture of one volume what used to be a series of individual barracks into one collective element. Former interiors are inverted to form exterior gardens for the institute. The productive landscape ‘feeds’ the strip and its adjacent buildings in three ways: by producing fuel, food and organic raw material. The production fields are carefully placed in the natural landscape. The contours of the former army base are marked by a quiet walking route, connecting view towers, viewpoints on the surrounding landscape, ecological spaces and new gardens. In this way the ridge path turns into an attractive sequence of intimate and open moments. The new buildings connect to the ridge, without exceeding the height of it. Located on the slopes, they don’t block the views but and add new viewpoints and gardens. All together, these layers create space for the long view.

It’s an important natural icon for Guangzhou. The waterfall is intriguing for many reasons. From far way it looks like one, but up closer one can see the variety in shape and spaces it has created over the course of thousands of years. The natural beauty of the waterfall is associated with many things, of which the main story is that of a fairy, dancing between the hills. The beauty of the waterfall is recognized but could be experienced by many more people. It could stimulate tourism and active leisure in the area and at the same increase the attractivity of the Guangzhou region. The ambition is to become a 5A touristic destination. Accessibility forms an important challenge to solve, in this steep topography: all age groups should be able to get to the waterfall. And the visitor flow should be more constant, day, night, all year long.

REUSE OF RESERVOIR AS PUBLIC PARK IN BOGOTA Streets are public spaces that host the flows of people, systems, plants, AND cars. These flows are not static. Like a river, there are high flows and calmmoments. Throughout the day, week, season and year each can host a variety of activities and still easily accommodate peak traffic moments at certain moments. The embracing of the rhythms of the variety of flows allows for a more dynamic design for our future streets. We can use contemporary technology to allow formore modular, flexible, and assembling furniture’s that can enhance our cultural, environmental, and technological spatial wishes. This may seem ‘new’, but in fact this idea traces back to the way Chinese society always used streets. They were always places for people, food, bikes, etc. Places to move and flow, but spaces to meet, greet and come together. The contemporary quality of our designs is how we use colors and plants to embrace the qualities of each place, while also using patterns to encourage drivers to take notice of their fellow citizens walking, biking and sitting in their community.Further, our proposals embrace the many systems of contemporary streets, not just cars and people; but also flows of water, ecology, energy, food networks, recycling, high tech networks, and cultural habitats.Ultimately our designs embrace the full spectrum of what streets are about. We celebrate this diversity and use it to give visual celebration of this full reality of our shared contemporary urban habitats.

The design takes advantage of the historical characteristics of the area, provides a series of diversified public spaces facing the long waterfront area, and protects the community from the impact of sea level rise. It attaches great importance to maintaining the historic waterfront community and establishing an evolutionary frame.

A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDELLIN
A river, by definition, refers to movement. Only if we interpret the Medellin River area as a single geographic entity composed of natural elements (fauna and flora) and artificial (history, culture, mobility) do we understand that the opportunity presented by this call goes beyond the area defined for the contest. This is why we consider it important to think of the river territory beyond a simple design of public space. It is the opportunity to re-structure and establish a framework for the future development of Medellín. Ideas of history and identity are key to any city. Currently many cities choose to erase/ cover ‘undesirable’ history and forms of the city with classic forms of public space. Our proposal is to as much as possible to reuse the existing city forms and to reinterpret them in a more contemporary, people friendly manner. This is will remain more true to the city’s collective memory, provide a richer public space and be massively more efficient in terms of investment spending.

STRATEGY FOR THE LONG TERM ADAPTATION OF OLYMPIC SPORT PARK IN SEOUL The site’s legacy for Korea, Seoul, and the world is immense. It represents for many the emergence of Korea on the global platform. This history must be respected, but not treated as a static relic. The power of the site must be leveraged to bring forth a rich layer of surfaces and subsurfaces fertile for future legacies. Urban ecologies, like natural ones, have life cycles. The strategy is to enhance already assumed large infrastructural gestures to allow space for experimentation, expansion, and even death of spatial programs. The space must not be ‘redesigned’ to be once again static, awaiting its next redesign in 30 years. It must set forth a series of systems to allow for the site to grow and adapt with its city, its country, its people and the global society.

The design combines the main body of the original mission requirement with the gentle mountainous terrain, and concentrates the main functions in the towers on the east and west of the site, thus returning the middle open city-natural corridors and activity places to the city, allowing Dapeng to develop while retaining the local green mountains and water. This will allow Dapeng to develop while retaining the local greenery and water.

Urban connections are made possible through the building, from pedestrian acces to the lake, and to a smooth connection to phase 2 site, enhancing the experience of visitors and strollers. The public services, science education spaces, academic and administration areas are in the first levels, so that the museum is a showcase of active research and learning, And reinforces urban intensity. The more we dig down, the farther we go backwards in time discovering layers of huge events that shaped the earth and life on it. The layering acknowledges life as a cicle of extintions and rebirths. The different horizontal levels are conceived as superposed layers of geology and life. Verticality reveals time, and slabs between levels reveal ruptures and extintions. VERTICAL CAMPUS IN A HIGH-DENSITY CONTEXT The project is located in the central area of Futian with a superior geographical location. The reconstruction and expansion now requires a total construction area of 30,952 square meters in the original playground, of which 18,262 square meters have a capacity building area, and 250 meters of runway space must be guaranteed. In this proposal, we deeply analyze the combination of venue and sports space. Under high-density conditions, by raising the runway to the roof and arranging the sports field on the negative floor, the roof space is used as a space for fun activities. The three-dimensional sports space layout makes it possible to have an open campus space and ample space for use under highdensity conditions. In addition, under the runway on the top floor, various professional classrooms are connected in series through a circular corridor to form a cultural campus space that surrounds the fun. We hope that the top space can become the main characteristic space of the campus, which will create a unique campus activity space for teachers and students while having an iconic image.

The design starts from the agricultural contexts of the site, and reinterprets it with an approach that aims to create various public spaces in between. The overall master plan extracts the field embankment patterns and simplifies them into curvy planters as the base pattern of the entrire site. The pattern is then overlayed with the strict grids that the main road and the layout of the greenhouse has created. The curvy landscape forms a stark contrast with the grids and renders the spaces around the greenhouses and residential units less formal with more comfortable intimate and garden-like qualities. In certain points, the curvy planters are able to frame a small space in the centre as a small plaza/ public space area where various activities such as resting, playing or eating can teke place.

TRADITIONAL MOSQUE RE-INTERPRETED TO A CONTEMPORARY DESIGN A Mosque is a common space for prayer, where the individual communicates amongst the crowd. Also, it is the focal point of the community, organizing everyday life around it. The design focuses on these two axes: the praying of the individual and it as a community center. The integration of traditional elements with a modern language is an essential part of the design. The base of the prayer hall program relates the adjacent uses, binding them all together. Continuing this line of thought, a Hamam is incorporated to our design, the shops are solved in an Arasta typology, tying the mosque further to its community and its history. The traditional dome, revak, and a courtyard forms are kept, but modified to the site context with a contemporary formal quality. The Ottoman master builder Sinan used domes for two reasons: to create the largest uninterrupted, unified volume and to maximize interior light. The design achieves these intentions but emphasizes the praying of the individual by integrating tubes in the design.

We can leverage this warped reality to bring us closer to each other, even if we are far apart. The installation illustrates how the layers of data landscapes allow for a different engagement for citizens with their food, how their food is made, the communities it is made within, the networks that bring their food, and the communities of people that work to provide these food sources. We literally break the layered landscapes into extruded plates and allow visitors to engage with the plants, buildings and community on different levels and from different perspectives. We project the data harvested from the real world landscape back upon the installed landscape components. This depicts to the viewer the reality of this extra layer that can be ‘seen’ with these new lenses.

STRATEGY TO CURATE THE SHENZHEN PLANNING MUSEUM Although there is increasing emphasis on urban planning as a science, it is equally an art form. In the planner’s toolkit are scientific skills such as prediction, mapping and analysis, data and modelling addressing issues of land use, urban design, natural resources, transportation, and infrastructure. But planning for the unpredictability of human beings and nature demands also creativity, imagination and a relentless pursuit of synergy and meaning. It requires appreciating the cultures that are created by and create urban spaces, and insight into the dynamics that guide and enable urban life. This is the Art of Planning - often unrecognized or under-appreciated- as it lies hidden amongst schemes and graphs, reports and policy. What better place to explore these dual aspects of planning than in Shenzhen in a museum that at its core explores both Planning and Contemporary Art? We believe this seemingly incongruous juxtaposition is an exciting opportunity to create a new inter-disciplinary museum in truly 21st century fashion. Through the exhibition we use the language of data science, networks, systems, mapping and mathematics combined with visual art, animation, sculpture and poetry to communicate key themes of the exhibit. The exhibitions feel almost like an art museumeach exhibit a sculpture or an intriguing installation that visualize complex data and concepts in a magical and beautiful way.

The current tool of the Chinese urban planning is based on single use zoning that rigidly regulates space and allows them to be perceived as commodity. However, in the PRD there are also several grey zones. Whether it’s urban villages or even SEZ’s themselves, there are special spaces that are permitted to operate as exceptions. Nowadays many people in China would agree that SEZ has fulfilled its purpose. Our proposal is about the transformation of the SEZ into Spatial Economic Networks. The remnants of the SEZ’s will be built upon to form the SEN. These existing structures are bones to be reshaped for new forms of working and living. The region can invest in its young talent, and instead of free trade zones for foreign corporations, allow individual initiatives to form their own international networks to operate and live amongst. Here the emerging productive society would be free to do more than merely make own products in a global network, working across disciplines, connecting to their peers and craftsmanship; they would also be free to make their own urban rules, and spaces within PRD. 35 years forward, could Spatial Economic Networks transform the PRD’s, China’s, and the world’s urban development patterns and its economic relationships, in a different way?

These engagement activities not only help explore and promote the cultural history of North Point, but they also allow visitors to engage in the neighbourhood and potentially lead to dialogues between different generations.

PROPOSAL FOR BORDER BETWEEN TIJUANA AND SAN DIEGO The proposal continuously eschews nationality and sovereignty, instead focusing on the human experience. The border line is thickened, allowing space for everything. The waters of the Tijuana River flow freely between the two countries, with the inadvertent symbolism via the absence of a delineating fence. The space for the river currently is an expression of engineering. It is for no one; therefore the reclamation of this area does not represent a seizing of space from anyone or any place. The proposal is to return the river to nature and people. A dot on the map is formed- a physical acknowledgement of crossing time. Nevertheless, it is more than a border, more than a margin for people to cross from one side to the other, but a place to be, to linger within. Amidst the chaos of the area, a group of floating island is formed- a decolonizing archipelago. There is no completed building, but a provision of a shared infrastructure for continuous and spontaneous occupation and evolution. Like nature, the space is never finished.

Sustainable Lantau Research: Tung O Ancient Trail
The project aims to facilitate the Sustainable Lantau Office’s (“SLO”) understanding of the sentiment of the key stakeholders on the revitalisation of Tung O Ancient Trail (“TOAT”) and the nearby villages through deploying Design Thinking (“DT”) approach, to rebuild an identity of the site and revitalizing the area. A number of engagement activities are planned as key components of the DT approach. This document outlines the major engagement activities and related details of the project The model layouts how different design thinking methods and tools will function to drive human-centric innovations to come up with revitalisation strategies in this project. The stages are put into a 2x2 matrix that guides us through 4 quadrants (Research, Analysis, Synthesis and Realisation), following the logic that we start with an intent to innovate, gain an understanding of our real world, conceptualise our findings into insights, then synthesis them into innovative concepts and solutions. For this project, we will end with the set of design principles, whereas realised offerings will be developed in the future when different vendors realise solutions based on our principles and recommendations.

RE:LEARNING THE CITY. The notion of learning, like our comprehension of cities, is undergoing a massive transition. As opposed to the classical top-down, checking-boxes, fixed-systems; we need to REread and REform the process of acquiring knowledge. Often people’s defining educational moments are intense, dynamic, diverse moments/experiences/places out of the norms of the ‘classroom’ and ‘school’. RELearning is a spatial and co-creational knowledge exchange, where professors, both foreign and local students, lecturers, local craftsmen, in-town guests, local researchers, exhibitors, and citizens crash together in a free flowing information exchange – creating a process of multi-layered learning across disciplines, for all. The academy will REthink the object as the core manner of perceiving architecture and urbanism. It seeks frameworks that enhance the REinterpretation of buildings, the REmaking of our cities, and the REimagination of our daily lives. In the largest metropolitan region in the world, amongst some of the newest and oldest cities, in an area with an ongoing legacy of east/west co-engaging; we will learn by operating within an adapting building, on a transforming city, and amongst an ongoing Biennale. The Aformal Academy is not merely a of series educational workshops parallel to the Biennale; it is a hybrid of learning by making, exhibition, and social space; at once the public at large with the evolving library of provocations and spatial archive of explorations.

A FILM ON URBAN TRANSFORMATION IN TURKEY
The current wave of resistance against government action was triggered by the cutting of trees at Gezi park, just off Taksim Square in central Istanbul, in order to construct a large shopping mall in the form of historicist Ottoman military barracks. It is no coincidence that the unrest started with a police crackdown of protests against urban regeneration: urban issues form a major component of the protestors’ demands and urban regeneration has fuelled widespread discontent with public authorities. In a country that is dealing with emergent issues of governance and economical development related to urban design and spatial planning, how is it possible to transform neighbourhoods and provide housing for the masses at an unprecedented speed and scale? Which role will a recent law play, that makes 6,5 million buildings eligible for transformation and demolition? Opposition is also growing. Protests have been staged against the demolition of culturally significant neighbourhoods and the displacement of communities. Critics point to the destruction of nature and the creation of dormitory towns, which lack amenities and public space. A significant amount of newly built high-rise housing could remain unoccupied. This raises the question of how mass housing and regeneration could be better tailored to satisfying communities’ needs. What role can architecture and planning play in an industry that shows little concern for local contexts? And how might the experiences of local designers and planners, as well as colleagues from the Netherlands or UNHabitat be relevant to these issues? In order to find answers, the architects, planners and a film crew travel from Ankara to Bursa and Istanbul consecutively. As part of their investigation, they visit transformation sites and interview the authorities in charge, scientists and local inhabitants.

The Environmental Protection Department decided to use the Kai Tak Runway construction areas for temporary wood storage after a public outcry against the tremendous amount of wood materials being sent to landfills as waste. No specific measure was in place to deal with any of the wood apart from piling them up at the Temporary Storage Area. Eventually, about 2 weeks later, 7,000+ tonnes of the wood waste was sent to the West New Territories Landfill. As we can foresee the increase of extreme weather events under global climate change, is there a better system we could put in place to treat the wood waste it produces?

TAOBAO VILLAGES, ARCHITECTURES OF THE EVERYDAY Our project explores the everyday life and the different scales of maintenance, care, and repair, in Shaji Taobao village in China. Taobao villages are districts in China tied to P2P online platforms. They are called villages because these districts are still in rural administrative territories of the country, and they used to rely heavily on farming. Many Taobao villages today have completely transformed to different scales of workshops and other production spaces, where villagers set up varieties of cooperative models to create and maintain the physical and digital infrastructures, collectively, and locally. What makes Shaji Taobao village worth researching is that it also still keeps farming, and their tradition of making coffins. Our project researches and documents the spatial, social, technological, and environmental network of Shaji. We also would like to propose spatial interventions for the further care and maintenance of Shaji. Our proposal for Sao Paolo Biennale is an installation displaying Shaji Taobao village as a potential future of the everyday. The installation will include a bunk-bed, which is the most sold furniture made in Shaji, and use this bunkbed as the structure to hang drawings, monitors, objects, ... where the research on the everyday of Shaji, and the interventions we propose are displayed. At the end of the biennale, the bunk-bed will be donated to a school in Sao Paolo.

Since 2014, the Luchtsingel has reconnected the former Hofplein Rotterdam train station to the rest of the city. The idea of this pedestrian bridge is to eventually create a two-kilometre-long green promenade through the city, connecting the increasingly densified city centre to the surrounding landscape. The Luchtpark (Air Park) realises the first phase of this plan. The polder landscape that borders Rotterdam inspired the park’s design, which constellates an orchard, a meadow, a play dyke, and a reed bed, as well as reusing the original rail elements, such as the rail track, portals, and platform. The Luchtpark Hofbogen is accessed via the Luchtsingel and the Heer Bokelweg. The grounds of the Luchtpark Hofbogen can also be used for events. The Hofbogen Luchtpark is the beginning of a prominent parkland structure. In the coming years, we shall continue its planning together with local residents and entrepreneurs.

A HOME FOR BOTH ELEPHANTS, THE TRAINERS, AND THEIR FAMILIES 这是一个100只大象和他们的Mahouts(照顾者)的住房项目,Hathigaon(或大象村) 位于琥珀宫和斋浦尔附近堡垒的山脚下。 A housing project for 100 elephants and their Mahouts (caregivers), Hathigaon (or Elephant Village) is located at the foot of the Amber Palace and the fort near Jaipur. The first step in the design strategy was to restore the landscape that had been damaged by the use of local sand miners as quarries to create a series of water bodies to capture rainwater runoff, as water is the most important resource in the desert climate of Rajasthan. With water resources in place, an extensive tree planting program with seeding sites can nurture native species. The water body is an important part of the design as it also promotes the bond between the handlers and the elephants through the bathing process - an important ritual that both protects the health of the elephants and maintains their relationship with their handlers. The housing units are laid out in groups and are located in non-landscape modified areas of the site. This is essentially a housing project for a low-income group, with courtyards and pavilions supplementing the otherwise limited space. The site plan therefore employs a system of clusters to create a shared community space at different levels of the hierarchy in order to build a sense of community among residents.

Located in CyberCity, Hyderabad, this corporate building employs the idea of a double skin as a visually dynamic façade, as well as a screen that humidifies the air entering the building – to create evaporative cooling for the interiors. The inner skin of the building is a reinforced concrete frame with standard aluminum windows. The outer façade comprises of a custom cast aluminum trellis with hydroponic trays and drip irrigation, integrated for growing a variety of plant species. The trellis also has an integrated misting system in order to control and regulate the amount of water released to the plants and used when required – to cool the building or cleanse the façade of dust in the hot and windy summer months in Hyderabad. The principal of the facade is inspired by the idea of a double skin that allows a modulation of light and air through the building. This is in contrast to the business-as-usual idea of the ‘green-wall’, which is a simple application on a surface purely serving an aesthetic, not a performative function.

The ambition for the Park Ruggeveld is to combine recreational needs of Antwerp and Deurne with ecological functions of the Groot Schijn and Koude Beek valleys, in such a way that a very accessible, multi-favoured urban park appears. The masterplan offers a patchwork of diverse activities and atmospheres, held together by a strong and unifying public backbone. Our vision offers answers to three major questions: How to unify Ruggeveld and Boterlaar-Silsburg into one coherent space with strong connections to the surrounding parks and streets; How to reveal the existing ecological assets of the two valleys and transform them into a prominent feature of the park; How to resolve the fragmented nature of the site into a strongly recognizable identity. The plan introduces the principle of the ‘seams’. The seams act as an organizing structure to define open spaces and form a network connecting all program elements such as soccer fields or youth clubs. The seams are designed with bending paths, in a setting of abundant trees, to offer an unexpected experience with surprises around every corner. They radiate out to the edges to form entrances and also to complement the character of the surrounding streets. Awarded the prestigious Flemish Spatial Planning Prize for the most innovative and exciting initiative on environmental quality and sustainable spatial development.
