Future Issue; for these pages I asked our editors (and their favorite sources) to look into their crystal balls and make some predictions about how everything from our shopping habits to the halls of Congress will change in the next five to 15 years.

I think we’ll be spot-on about many of them, but I’m just as sure we’ll get a few wrong. In some ways it’s like we’re living Moore’s Law (so named for Gordon Moore, who predicted in 1965 that computing speeds would double every two years), with the world turning faster and faster around us. Life is changing so quickly, with every industry (including ours) disrupted by new ideas and new inventions, it’s impossible to predict everything that’s coming next.

So how can you be ready for such massive shifts? My suggestion: Start by being open to all the changes. Throw any fear out the window, be flexible about what might come your way, and chase the thing that excites you. Five years ago I was a producer for BBC World News, working on air and covering the war in Syria, the appointment of Pope Francis, the changing tech landscape in Myanmar. But the constant—throughout more than 15 years of journalism—was how women’s stories excited me. In Nigeria I saw how new technology opened banking options for women, helping them lead more independent lives in a culture that has long forced them to be dependent on their fathers and brothers. In Papua New Guinea, I couldn’t forget witnessing a wife being beaten in the street by her husband, while no one blinked an eye because violence against women is so accepted there. Recognizing that women’s stories were

the ones I talked about most to my friends and relentlessly pitched to my bosses is what led me to this fabulous job at Glamour. Find that constant in your life.

Another thing that will guide us in the future: how we connect with others. As you’ll learn from senior editor Mattie Kahn’s reporting on how Congress might change if more women are finally elected to that body (page 98), the way female senators reach out and discuss the issues with their (male and female) colleagues has already changed history. As so many exciting and new developments come down the pike, we can’t forget those essential human skills.

Compassion, empathy, understanding, optimism—those are the things that will make our future a bright one.

shoot, there are always a lot of people—the photographer plus assistants checking the lights, a stylist mixing and matching clothes, hair and makeup artists spritzing hairspray or dabbing on gloss. “It really is a huge creative collaboration,” says Ashley Taliento, Glamour’s photo director. This month our crew was bigger—three stars, three times the makeup!—and the equipment was a little different too. We shot our cover (and the pictures on this page) on the new Google Pixel 3.

HE SET OF THE HATE U GIVE COULD HAVE

been a somber, hushed place. After all, the movie (and the book on which it’s based) centers on the effects of police violence after a local cop kills a black teen. But what Amandla Stenberg, 20, remembers is the music. She and an almost allblack cast and extras, many of them heavily involved in grassroots efforts to support Black Lives Matter, would rap between takes, breaking into Kendrick Lamar anthems like “Alright.” (Sample lyrics: “Do you hear me, do you feel me? We gon’ be alright.”) People were able to be their full “authentic selves” on set, Amandla says, and that time between takes “was a celebration of our community and the ability we have to use our collective voice to stand up.”

Amandla tells me this over the phone at the end of August, the same week that I have to attend orientation at a new school. Before I dialed, I took a deep breath to calm a rush of nerves. We’re not so different, I thought—we’re both readers and writers, both activists. But Amandla has become a voice in social movements like Black Lives Matter, even as she promotes movies and poses for beautiful photo shoots (like this one). Sure, I founded #1000BlackGirlBooks to call for more diverse stories and once met Angie Thomas, who wrote the novel The Hate U Give, at a book festival. But when it comes down to it, I’m just starting high school, and Amandla was in The Hunger Games.

Amandla puts me at ease in an instant. As she says, it’s a skill black girls learn from birth: “We have a unique voice because we grow up with the ability to empathize. We constantly have to do the work of placing ourselves in other people’s shoes.” That can be a burden, but Amandla calls it a “superpower of empathy.” She reminds me that “the way that we talk, the way that we love, the way that we express ourselves, how we do our hair”—what makes us different also makes us special.

In The Hate U Give, Amandla plays Starr Carter, a 16-year-old who sees a police officer shoot and kill her childhood friend. Starr has to decide whether to serve as a formal witness, all while navigating her parallel lives, split between her mostly black neighborhood and her mostly white, wealthy prep school.

That divided universe reminds Amandla of her own childhood in Los Angeles, but while Starr feels alone in her experience at school, Amandla feels fortunate she had people who understood where she came from. “We became kind of like a band, like a little squad,” she tells me of her black friends. “We had to squad up in that environment in order to feel comfortable.” Those relationships meant she was never isolated in her experience or disempowered.

“People did not understand where I lived, never went to my side of town. They didn’t really understand what it feels like to be black or how beautiful our black communities are,” she says.

Today, Amandla isn’t afraid to tell them. After all, she is the same Amandla Stenberg who came out on Snapchat at 17 and made the video “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows,” which went viral. The video is pure Amandla—honest and personal but pointed about the issues, in this case about the harm that cultural appropriation can do. At the end, she asks, “What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture?”

The Hate U Give asks the same question. Amandla isn’t worried about the reviews or box office numbers; she cares about the lessons the story will teach audiences. “If we’ve done the job right, movies like The Hate U Give will be a tool in depicting that sort of cultural appropriation, why it’s insensitive, why it’s not cool.” What she wants most is for us, no matter who we are, to feel like we have the space we need to express ourselves.

Lately she’s made a bigger effort to follow her own advice. At red-carpet events she doesn’t stick to pastels.

She wears burnt-orange suits and sleek dresses, her hair natural. “[Fashion] is just an inherent part of my job. It’s something that I love,” Amandla says. But when she started out—like Starr transitioning from hoodies to a fresh school uniform and Jordans—it seemed easier to be one person on the red carpet and a different person at home. That’s begun to change. “I am learning how to integrate,” she says. “I want to express myself as authentically as I can.”

produced clothes that are also, you know, chic might not sound like a breakthrough today, but back in 2010, when Kristy Caylor launched Maiyet, she felt it was an uphill battle. “We were like, ‘We’re going to make this beautiful, artisan-made brand,’” Caylor, 38, recalls.

“And people were like, ‘Sooo…does that mean you’ll sell it at Whole Foods?’”

Now Caylor, who has a degree in engineering as well as an M.B.A., is applying that crystal-ball sense to a new venture: a T-shirt membership service called For Days, which bills itself as the first apparel line with a completely closed-loop production chain, meaning every new piece is recycled from previous collections; not a scrap of fabric goes to waste.

Caylor cofounded the business with Mary Saunders, whom she met while working at Banana Republic 14 years ago. Their elevator pitch is packed with alarming stats, among them that the average American discards about 80 pounds of clothing annually. T-shirts are really not helping—the average American throws away six a year. “They get pit stains, they stretch, they rip— T-shirts don’t last,” says Caylor.

To stop the cycle, For Days offers four plans, ranging from $38 a year for one shirt at a time to $340 a year for 10. The line, which also includes some tanks and a sweatshirt, are all simple solids, and many have a retro feel. There’s a rib-knit reminiscent of a nineties baby tee and a seventies-style mockneck.

When a customer wants to take one out of rotation, she orders a new one and mails the old back. Returned shirts are deconstructed into a pulp, purified, and spun into yarn to make a new one.

There’s a lot about For Days that echoes other post-aughts hits: the borrowing ethos of Rent the Runway, the direct-to-consumer appeal of Warby Parker, the basics-but-better aesthetic of Everlane. Even its circular production chain isn’t entirely uncharted territory—Eileen Fisher and Patagonia have experimented with similar ideas on a limited basis. But the fact that Caylor has built a whole business out of this model is revolutionary.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Caylor. She has plans to offer socks and PJs, and ultimately imagines an entire retail landscape—clothes, home goods, you name it—that’s “like Amazon, but circular.” And chic.

Will Artificial Intelligence Change How You Dress?

hunt for a dress to wear to a friend’s downtown-L.A. warehouse wedding left me spent. I was thinking something midi length, fitted without being too revealing, maybe floral? Glassy-eyed, I scrolled through page after page of options online, then I stormed laps through the mall. All the while I thought: This shouldn’t be so hard.

In the future it won’t be. Within a decade artificial intelligence is poised to reinvent the shopping landscape. Think of a computer or device that knows not only your budget but also your measurements, what’s already in your closet, what events are on your iCalendar, and what’s trending on the runways—and uses that information to formulate the kind of nuanced suggestions that we didn’t think a machine would be capable of. In other words, it might very well be able to pinpoint what you should wear better than you could.

Stitch Fix already has an algorithm shopping model that selects clothes for customers (with the help of a team of human stylists) sight unseen. (While the company doesn’t disclose the success rate of its customer-to-clothing matches, the fact that it has 2.7 million customers should be some indication of the quality of its service.) And Amazon’s Echo Look uses a mix of humans and AI to power its styling services. The device has a hands-free camera that takes pictures of your

outfit, blurs out the background, and, in the accompanying smartphone app, can catalog your entire wardrobe into style categories (it placed a chambray dress of mine in a “fancy casual” collection). The app’s Style Check feature also allows users to submit images of two outfits and ask the Look which is better. Right now the verdict comes in about a minute from Amazon’s algorithms and a team of fashion experts, with a brief explanation. But Linda Ranz, director of Echo product management, says that will shift: “Over time, the machine will get smarter and smarter.” When I submitted a question, I was told that one outfit was the winner because “the colors work better together.” Frustratingly vague, but you can see the potential.

There are some areas in which computer precision could quickly best humans, namely when it comes to sizing. Lumping customers into groups—medium and large, say, or even a 10 or a 12—has always been a flawed system. Stitch Fix data places people on a more exact spectrum (maybe you are a smaller-chested 12 or a long-legged 8), and Stitch Fix chief algorithms officer Eric Colson envisions a day when we will have our dimensions on a scannable chip, allowing us to find the perfect fit every time.

Still, there are some instances where it’s hard to imagine a computer having an advantage over the human mind, in all its complexities.

For example, a machine could understand that you need a dress to wear to a wedding but not the subtlety of what kind of dress you’d want to wear to your ex-boyfriend’s wedding. Only a human would know what that means, Colson says: “She wants to look good.”

There are still plenty of skeptics about this technology, who (rightly) point out that fashion is an art form and also a means of self-expression— things no computer can replace. As with all technological advancements, the key is figuring out how to use it in our lives. For instance: when you’re frantically looking for a dress for a wedding and your ex-boyfriend isn’t the groom.

at everything from day one. That philosophy and my consciousness of the world was instilled early on by my grandmother who hitchhiked across the globe and met my grandfather in India in the late forties—a crazy thing for a young white woman to do at the time. I was lucky that I grew up feeling like I didn’t need to follow certain life rules or a specific timeline. It’s what made me decide to take a gap semester in Africa when I was 17. My family didn’t have much money, but I convinced them and my college scholarship committee to let me use some of the funds to do volunteer work in Ghana. That trip changed my life.

we’re cutting them down and destroying their biodiversity at a rate faster than we can study them. Uganda is the place I discovered Nilotica, a rich, soothing skin butter native to rural areas there and in South Sudan that’s hand-harvested from trees that take 20 years to mature.

My goals: that it feature natural, plant-based ingredients; multipurpose formulations that tackle a variety of skin issues so we can consume less stuff altogether; and eco-packaging (currently, we at LMXI use glass and recyclable materials but are working toward fully biodegradable packaging for upcoming collections).

Along the way I’ve learned that the future of beauty isn’t about a one-size-fits-all routine or a “go big or go home” green ethos. It’s about growing and tweaking and trying to make smarter choices moving forward. And not feeling bad about any of it. Because shame doesn’t motivate

Can You Biohack Your Anxiety?

ARA ANDERSON KNOWS EX ACTLY WHAT SHE NEEDS TO MANAGE HER ANXIET Y:

seven hours and 18 minutes of sleep; 20 to 30 minutes of journaling and 10 minutes of meditation each morning; a B8 vitamin supplement that she says lightens the tightness in her chest and helps her sleep; no cold food (it causes her to tense up); and limited caffeine, alcohol, and sugar. The 28-year-old, who works for a tech company in San Francisco, first saw a doctor about her anxiety as a teen.

He prescribed sleeping pills to help with her insomnia (which he thought was contributing to her anxiety), but she never took the medication—and never fully addressed her anxiety. She coped by doing yoga and meditating, but her symptoms persisted.

Then, in her early twenties, Anderson moved to Silicon Valley to work at a start-up where 80 percent of the company was male. “It was very stressful,” she says. “I was successful in my career, but I was really

anxious and edgy. I couldn’t focus, my body hurt, and I was so fatigued I could barely keep my eyes open at work.”

She didn’t want to take medication, so when Anderson, who’s always been “very analytical,” heard about biohacking—tracking personal metrics like sleep, diet, and exercise to glean insights about your body and tweaking those variables to feel better—she jumped at the chance to try it. Using data to deal with her anxiety made perfect sense to her. After more than two years of tinkering with her sleep, diet, and even her birth control, she says she feels anxiety-free and better than ever.

What Is Biohacking?

The buzzy practice originated in Silicon Valley and is loosely defined as experimenting on your body—everything from eating less junk food, microdosing on psychedelic drugs, eliminating certain foods from your diet, or taking supplements—all to “hack” your biology and improve your health. “You look at your body as a study,” says Molly Maloof, M.D., a general practitioner in San Francisco who specializes in helping engineers and start-up founders biohack safely. “You have a hypothesis on what’s causing this problem, and then you do an experiment to see if you can fix it.”

Some take this tinkering to the extreme; people have reportedly even tried to edit their own DNA in an attempt to eliminate a genetic disease. Other biohacking fanatics have magnets or radio-frequency identification implants inserted under their fingertips as a more secure way to get into their cars or access other valuables. Biohacking also can include using at-home health kits, such as SmartJane, VitalGene, and HomeDNA, to test for everything from STIs to food allergies. But most commonly, biohacking is about feeling—and functioning—your best.

Biohacking Your Moods In the cutthroat world of Silicon Valley, some women view a mental health issue much the way they see any problem that crosses their desk—it’s something that can be disrupted. Last May, Paris Rouzati, a 28-year-old in San Francisco, started X Women, a digital support group for women with anxiety and depression, with Jessica Sit, 28.

“We found immense comfort in our shared experience,” recalls Sit. “There’s that massive exhale of relief when you find that someone else is feeling the same thing as you.”

Their team of two grew, and today they have an intensely engaged group on Telegram (a popular messaging service) where about 100 women from all over the world share how they cope with anxiety.

One of the most popular channels is on biohacking.

“Being from California,” says Sit, “the discussion started with CBD,” or cannabidiol, which is the nonpsychoactive component of marijuana. (While the research is somewhat

promising, more is needed to determine whether CBD may be effective in treating anxiety.)

Other buzzy topics: blue-blocking glasses, meditation and breath-monitoring gadgets, acupuncture, supplements, and essential oils. The group does more than just share stories. “It’s, ‘Here’s this resource. How can I help?

Here, let me reach into my bag of experiences,’” says Rouzati. “There’s a road map set by someone else.”

So Should You Try It? If your anxiety is debilitating, an appointment with a mental health professional to talk about treatment, which might include therapy and/or medication, is critical, says Lynn Bufka, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and associate executive director of practice research and policy at the American Psychological Association. For milder anxiety, certain biohacks to tame it don’t cost much (and actually aren’t all that high-tech). Some popular ones: PRACTICING MINDFULNESS… In a review of 47 studies, researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that meditating for about 2.5 hours a week moderately improved anxiety after eight weeks. Anderson meditates every morning: “It helps me feel calmer throughout the day,” she says. …AND YOGA. “It’s the best way to boost your parasympathetic nervous system, which gets you into ‘rest and digest’ mode,” says Dr. Maloof, who recommends her patients do it at least three times a week. Research has found it’s more effective in improving mood than a walking workout.

EATING MOOD-BOOSTING FOODS. Fiber-rich veggies, foods high in omega-3s like wild salmon, probiotic-filled yogurt, and foods with zinc (such as cashews and egg yolk) may spur the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. Junk foods, Dr. Maloof says, do the opposite, telling your brain you’re under stress.

WEARING BLUE-BLOCKING GLASSES. The blue-tinged light from computer, phone, and TV screens can throw serotonin levels out of whack, making it harder to sleep and raising the risk of anxiety and depression. These special glasses (generally about $30) may block that light and can be helpful when worn for any screen time before bed.

TAKING NOOTROPICS. These supplements, which claim to boost memory and focus and protect your brain from degeneration, have gotten lots of buzz. But experts say there’s no proof of their safety or efficacy and, like all supplements, they aren’t regulated by the FDA. OPTIMIZING SLEEP. We’ve all heard we need eight hours a day. But biohackers also watch their sleep cycles. Everyone goes through four to six distinct sleep cycles per night; waking up during the active REM stage can leave people feeling groggy and anxious. By charting her sleep patterns on an app, Anderson was able to make sure she woke up after the REM stage had passed.

EMPHASIZING TOUCH. “Human touch is overlooked when it comes to mental health,” says Dr. Maloof. The right kind of touch, like a reassuring pat on the back or warm embrace, elicits in the recipient the release of the feelgood hormone oxytocin. Dr. Maloof schedules a massage for herself every few weeks and tells patients to make time to see friends. “If you don’t have a nurturing community around you,” she says, “you’re sending your body signals that you’re not healthy.” Zero tech required.

cure about it, Chrissy Metz finally wore a swimsuit on vacation. “I grew up wearing a T-shirt at the pool. As an adult, I was like, I’m gonna find a bathing suit I like and I’m gonna wear it,” she tells me from the driver’s seat of her Audi SUV, which we’re sitting in to escape the Los Angeles heat. “And there were people, like, ‘Oh my God, look at you! You know I could never do that.’ ” She laughs. “It’s a backhanded compliment, but I’m doing what I want to do.”

Metz’s newfound do-what-I-want mentality has been 38 years in the making. Born in Homestead, Florida, she spent her early years in Japan with her mother, older brother and sister, and father, who worked at a bar off the Yokosuka Navy base. Her parents divorced, and her mom planted the family back in Florida. After years of struggle—“our electricity was shut off a lot,” she revealed in her memoir, This Is Me—they moved in with her mom’s soon-to-be new husband Trigger, who would weigh Metz in their kitchen. (Trigger has denied this, telling Entertainment Tonight, “None of it’s true…. I love her very much just like I always have.”)

At 20, while chaperoning her younger sister Morgana to a modeling casting call, Metz caught the eye of a talent scout.

She moved to L.A. in 2005 and spent nine years working as a talent agent (her clients included a young Ariana Grande) before landing a small part in American Horror Story: Freak Show. But the acting offers were few and far between; Metz reached a breaking point in fall 2015 with only 81 cents in her bank account. “There were a couple weeks when I was like, Chrissy, you’re delusional,” she recalls. “I just remember holding on to something I couldn’t really see but I knew was there deep, deep down. And then it sort of all just happened.”

It happened in the form of This Is Us, which has earned Metz both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. As Kate Pearson, she’s one of the most complex characters on prime-time TV and teaches us to have empathy for Kate’s

anxieties about things like dancing at parties or fitting into airplane seats. This Is Us also presents Kate as a fully realized character: Last season saw her grappling with a miscarriage, her father’s death, and growing pains with her fiancé, Toby (Chris Sullivan). “People who’ve never been overweight don’t understand what it all entails. They think you’re just sitting in the corner and all you do is eat,” she says. “My thing is, Let’s get to the real issues—because the food is the symptom; it’s not the issue. Everyone’s filling a void with something.”

For Metz, that void was all about boundaries. “There are so many times in my life that I didn’t express how I felt,” she says. “Now I really try to remember, OK, Chrissy, this is your life, and you are entitled to do what you want.” In March she revealed she and her boyfriend of almost two years, a former cameraman on the show, broke up. She’s since gone on a handful of dates and has even tried the apps—“I don’t know if people genuinely like me or the lifestyle or who they think I am,” she says—but doesn’t always pick the right guys. “I’m sort of discovering that I attract people who are broken,” she says. “It’s tricky, but I wear my heart on my sleeve.”

This authenticity is the first thing people notice about Metz. “I trusted her immediately,” says Justin Hartley, who plays Kate’s brother Kevin, “and I don’t trust anyone immediately.” When I ask co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger what it’s like to work with Metz, she immediately mentions her heart. “Chrissy loves and feels the show deeply, and you can feel it in every interaction she has on set,” she says. It’s led Berger and her team to try to weave Metz’s personal interests, like singing, into Kate’s storylines. Music is a huge passion, and she hopes to release an album down the line.

“I really want to do maybe some pop-country or country,” Metz says. “I would love to produce some film, maybe eventually be in a musical and have a production company.”

For now, she’s busy acting. Up next is Breakthrough, in which she’ll play a mom who uses prayer to resuscitate her son. The film, based on a true story, is one of Metz’s first projects that has nothing to do with weight—something she hopes keeps happening. “People are still surprised that a big girl could be on TV, and it’s like, Ugh, really? Really?” she says. “There’s so much other stuff to talk about.”

HEN SUSAN KELECHI WATSON

sits down across from me at the restaurant inside the Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills, she asks if the menu on the table is just for show or if we’re going to “keep it real and eat together.” I feel like I already know this woman. Of course we’re eating.

In the two seasons she has played Beth Pearson—the no-nonsense wife of our favorite adopted TV son, Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown)—Watson has transformed a solid supporting character into one so beloved that rumors of her impending death led fans to start Save Beth Pearson petitions. “It’s always really cool as an actor to have a character that people want to see the best for,” Watson says. “To know that people are behind her, to know that people are rocking with her and get her.”

It’s hard not to confuse a love for Beth with a love for the 36-year-old woman who plays her. Brown himself has fallen for Watson: “I tell my wife, ‘Ryan, I have to tell you that I love Susan. And it’s not a bad thing, and you don’t have to worry, but I need to let you know that I love this woman,’ ” he says. “She’s such a big giant heart of a human being.

She’s so Brooklyn. She’s so New York—she’s got the accent and everything—but underneath that exterior, she’s just as warm a soul as you will ever come in contact with.”

The Brooklyn accent comes easy. Watson lived in the borough’s East New York neighborhood until her parents moved the family to Long Island. (She currently calls Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy home.) Growing up the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, she felt more pressure to be self-sufficient than she did to be successful. She wasn’t even sure she wanted to go to college until a friend told her she was applying to Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Watson, on a whim, decided to do the same.

She made it to Howard and, following a call from alumna Phylicia Rashad to Denzel Washington, received a scholarship to study Shakespeare abroad at the University of Oxford. It was her first time crossing the Atlantic. “The sky was different,” she says. “Something about the color of the night over there, which was different from the haze-colored nights of New York, had an influence on me.”

Watson had caught the acting bug but initially kept her career plans from her parents, who were concerned about their daughter’s ability to support herself. “I just kind of got into it without telling them,” she says. She spent many years barely getting by, splitting cans of soup with her neighbor for dinner while steadily playing cops, nurses, and lawyers. In 2012 she landed the role of Janet, the candid ex-wife and coparent to Louis C.K.’s Louie. While Watson says that her own experience on Louie was “really great,” when asked if her perspective has changed following the comic’s admitted sexual misconduct, she explains it this way: “There’s light and dark in all things, you know?

And my experience was the light. But I cannot take away from anyone’s experience of the dark.”

The call for This Is Us came soon after her two-season arc on Louie concluded. Watson was on the phone with her good friend Danai Gurira after “a really bad audition” for Gurira’s play Familiar. “Danai says to me, ‘You know what, girl? Maybe God just has a pilot for you or something.’ Then I get a beep on the other line—literally,” she remembers. Still, Watson wasn’t convinced the then untitled Dan Fogelman project about an ensemble of characters all born on the same day was her big break. She started looking at apartments in Montreal, where the cost of living was cheaper than New York. The plan was “pay my rent, go work as a barista, learn French,” she says. Spoiler alert: She never became a barista.

As an actor, Watson is aware that she is part of a wave of black leading ladies, many of whom have found mainstream success later in their careers. And she’s particular about how she uses that platform, choosing to lend her voice to Drama Club, a New York City nonprofit that provides mentorship to incarcerated and court-involved young people, and Epic Theatre Ensemble, a New York City organization that makes theater accessible for students and first-time audiences. “We all need somebody to say, ‘I love you. I see you.

And I’m not going to give up on you,’ ” she says. “Everybody has validity. Everybody has a purpose.”

Her purpose includes her advocacy work as well as a screenplay, a love letter to Brooklyn, she’ll work on with writing partner Sanjit De Silva when This Is Us goes on hiatus early next spring. In five years she sees herself producing and creating on her own, but “still acting—absolutely,” she says. The career she aspires to is that of Amy Adams, because “there’s nothing that I’ve really seen her do twice.” Watson hopes to be married, maybe with one kid. “I’m getting specific now,” she says with a smile.

As for Beth? “I feel like she’s going to start a community project that’s based on one of her artistic passions. She also has a background in dance, which you’ll see this season,” she says. “And still together with Randall, of course. I don’t think he’s going anywhere.” Neither is she. Neither are we.

Moore will tell you she’s the nicest person they’ve ever met. Interviews refer to the 34-year-old as “America’s sweetheart” and “the friend you’ve always wanted.” And while she appreciates the platitudes, they also make her a little uneasy. “I think those particular descriptors prevented me from finding momentum, workwise, because people saw me in one light,” she says. “There’s more to who I am.”

Moore was only 15 when her hit song “Candy” debuted in 1999. She toured with *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys and starred in beloved teen movies like The Princess Diaries and A Walk to Remember. She wasn’t a tabloid fixture like her peers Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, which gave her freedom to build her film résumé (Saved!, License to Wed) while still releasing music.

But there was personal upheaval behind the scenes.

When Moore was 23, her mother left her father after 30 years of marriage for a woman. Moore discovered the relationship by accident, during a Christmas trip to North Carolina in a plot twist worthy of This Is Us: While setting up a laptop for her mom, she saw an email draft addressed to her. “I thought, Why is Mom writing me?” Moore says.

“It was basically her telling us how she had fallen in love with a friend and was going to leave Dad.” It was the family’s last vacation together.

Moore’s reaction was to protect her father, but as time passed—and through plenty of therapy—she came to understand her mom’s decision. “At the time I was left with no choice but to compartmentalize what was happening,” she says. Now “everyone is in a much better space, and they’re with the people that are better suited for them. All of that is a very happy ending, but it didn’t come without real struggle.”

What came next: Moore married musician Ryan Adams.

“I couldn’t control what happened to my immediate family, but I could control starting my own.” She pauses, then adds, “Not the smartest decision. I didn’t choose the right person.”

Their marriage ended six years later, and Moore was ready for a new chapter. She felt “spiritually and fundamentally stuck” leading up to the divorce, and her career and friendships suffered for it. “I don’t feel guilty for it. I don’t fault myself for it,” she says of the divorce. “When people said, ‘I’m sorry,’ I was like, ‘No. Sorry would have been had I stayed in a very unhealthy situation.’ I didn’t. I found my way out. And when I did, things opened back up again.”

One of those things was This Is Us, which came at a time when Moore felt her career was at a standstill. She plays matriarch Rebecca Pearson, which often puts her at the center of the show’s deeply emotional storylines. “I’ve never been a part of something that means so much to the outside world,” Moore says. “It means just as much to all of us.”

It’s why Moore feels as wowed by the show now, at the start of season three, as she did when it premiered two years ago. “This Is Us has allowed me to show people that I’m not perpetually stuck in the realm of teen romantic comedies,” she says. “I’m a woman now. I’ve been married and divorced.

I’ve had ups and downs, professionally and personally.”

Another thing that opened back up? Her love life. She met fiancé Taylor Goldsmith, front man of folk-rock group Dawes, in 2015. (It was a truly modern meet-cute: She posted a photo on Instagram praising the band, and Goldsmith contacted her to say thanks.) “I was still dealing with the trauma of my divorce when we started dating,” she says. “Taylor was steadfast in his support—that was a huge sign for me.” They’ve renovated a home together in Pasadena, and Moore tears up as she talks about getting married “later this year.” “He makes me melt. I can imagine no better partner,” she says. “He’s going to be the most tremendous father. I view the past as a stepping-stone to get me where I am today. I would gladly weather all of that a million times over if it brought me to Taylor again.”

Yes, kids are in the picture, but don’t pressure her about it. “Maybe it’s true [about the biological clock], but fuck that narrative,” she says. Besides, the couple hopes to adopt, “so that will be a part of our lives, God willing.” Moore also plans to return to the recording studio. “I feel ready now,” she says. “I allowed other people’s perception of who I am and what I should be doing and how I should be doing it to permeate my relationship to music.” Milo Ventimiglia, who plays her onscreen husband Jack, sees how she’s moving past her self-proclaimed “people pleaser” title: “She likes people happy, but she’s not a pleaser,” he says. “She just cares.

She truly cares, both about the work and the experience.”

Moore has other goals for the future, including writing, directing, and producing. “If I’m not going to take advantage of the doors that have been opened because of This Is Us to shape the stories that I want to see,” she says, “then what’s the point? After years of not being able to find things that I felt challenged by, it’s really cool to potentially be in a position to find material and help create it.”

Whatever happens, though, Moore thinks her thirties and forties will bring good things. “You give less of a shit about how the world perceives you,” she says. “Now it’s more important to me to be self-satisfying. And I’m better at that.

It just comes with time.”

E WAS MARRIED. I WAS SINGLE. WE HAD

an affair—and we never even kissed. When I started talking to Josh (not his real name), I was getting over a five-month bout of bronchitis that often had me wheezing and crying. I lived alone and worked from my studio apartment in Los Angeles. Too tired to cook, I relied on fast food, and I drank, even though I knew I shouldn’t while taking an antidepressant.

I was lonely as hell and just wanted to feel less conscious. It was no surprise that my mental health had taken a nose dive—I have a history of depression, panic attacks, and agoraphobia. When I go to therapy, take medication, exercise, eat healthy, and sleep enough, I do very well. But being sick made it easy to neglect that recipe for health.

A few months into my illness, I watched a funny video on Josh’s Instagram. He was an artist I knew of through mutual friends, and we followed each other, but we’d never met. He was cute and seemed smart. For the hell of it, I sent him a private message: “That video cracked me up in the middle of a long workday.” He responded right away: “Hey, thanks! You live out here now, right?” We chatted about our respective work projects and how odd it was that we’d never met. The messaging continued for the next few days.

Early on, he mentioned his wife and kids. I felt a little disappointed, but I quickly recalibrated into friend mode— heck, why wouldn’t he be married? He was so great! He told me a little about her, and she sounded impressive. She’s a tal-

ented businesswoman, and he did the bulk of the child care.

He didn’t bring his family up again, at least not for a while.

Within a couple of weeks, he told me it was hard to type while he was working on his art, and I suggested we FaceTime. We started doing that every day while I worked in bed, pale and disheveled and propped up on pillows. He set up his phone on a little tripod, and I loved getting a window into his works in progress. I also felt a kind of pathetic gratitude that he wanted to talk to me even though I thought I looked like shit. He, meanwhile, was tan and healthy and reminded me of a guy I’d had a crush on in high school.

Chats about art and sports quickly went deeper. One day he nervously told me he was in treatment for a mental health issue. He hadn’t told anybody else but said he knew he could trust me. I told him I was honored, and I suggested he keep going to therapy. I said I hadn’t been going for a little while, but I blamed it on my illness. He went on a family vacation, and when he returned, he told me he’d listened to the entirety of my memoir on audiobook and loved it. What a nice guy, I thought. What a good friend. It didn’t occur to me that it was odd for a man I’d never met to listen to my voice for eight hours on an airplane while sitting next to his wife and kids.

Over the next couple months, our communication increased: text, FaceTime, Skype, Facebook, phone calls, emails. Our talks took on the flavor of something secretive.

Once, he was late picking up one of his kids from day care because we’d been chatting for so long.

“I think Josh has a crush on me,” I told my friend Carol.

A real straight shooter, she replied: “Yeah, and you’ve got a crush on him. He’s an idiot; he wants you to seduce him so he can fuck you and then blame it on you. Stop talking to him.”

“He’s just a friend,” I protested.

“I’m just your friend,” Carol said. “He’s using you for emotional support because his wife is busy actually earning money and being a real adult. And you’re using him because you don’t know how to be single, so you have a sexless substitute boyfriend.” My gut knew she was right, but my head said: “We can fix this!”

It was a familiar refrain for me. I frequently chose men or women I thought needed “fixing.” I stayed with people I didn’t even respect, doing my best to be indispensable to them so they’d never leave me. My fear of abandonment was so great that I allowed myself to be used because I was a user too. I was addicted; my fix was fixing others.

Josh called. He sounded nervous. “I have to talk to you about something,” he said. “I’ve realized that my feelings for you have…”

I blurted out, “Turned into a crush?” at the same time he said, “Begun to eclipse my feelings for my wife.”

His words scared me. They were more serious than I’d expected. What I should’ve said was: “Josh, this is wrong. I wish you the best, but we shouldn’t talk anymore.” What I (literally) said was: “We can fix this!”

We arranged to meet for coffee in a public place. I thought talking in person would take all the sparkle and mystery out of our feelings for each other. It didn’t.

Soon after that he went on an anniversary trip with his wife and drunkenly texted me that he missed me. I said that was inappropriate, and then we spent a half hour texting about how inappropriate it was.

A few times, when we were both drinking, our talks turned into phone sex. Afterward we’d both declare we couldn’t speak to each other again. But those moratoriums never lasted. Three months into our pseudo-friendship, Josh told me he loved me. I said I loved him too. He said that was sad because he’d never leave his wife. “If only I’d met you before her,” he said. “You are perfect. I want to be in love with her, but I don’t think I am. She’s so great. Why can’t I be in love with her anymore?”

“You could leave her,” I said hopefully. “I doubt she wants to be with someone who isn’t in love with her.” I thought: And then you could get a real job and a place by yourself, and after maybe six months we could start dating for real, and it would be healthy and aboveboard, and then we could get married, mostly happily ever after.

“No,” he said. “I don’t want to mess up my kids the way my parents messed me up when they got divorced.”

But was that really the reason? I thought about it. The wife sounded great, and he never complained about her.

He had a pretty sweet setup. His children would be in school full-time soon, and he could do his art all day and hang out with his friends. I took care of his emotional needs; she took care of his financial and sexual needs. He was set. And this was the person I loved?

I should just kill myself, I thought.

That’s when I knew I’d hit my limit. I hadn’t had that dark thought in many years. I was sad that it had taken

getting to this point to end yet another shitty relationship.

Whatever I had with Josh, it wasn’t worth feeling like this.

I went back into therapy, and as hard as it was, I spoke to Josh less and less. Instead of looking for someone else, I started taking care of myself. I practiced meditation. I went to a nutritionist and ditched the fast food, caffeine, and sugar that kept me on an all-day roller coaster. I forced myself out of the house to spend time with friends—and not just drinking time, either. I began visiting my family more often, spending lots of time with my baby nephew.

I went two months without talking to Josh. And then I ran into him at a party. We drank a lot and walked around the block several times, talking. He said he was in couples therapy and it was going OK. He told me he was still in love with me and missed me. I said, “Me too.” At one point, we held hands. We’d never done that before. “Are you going to kiss me?” I asked. “This is probably your last chance.”

“I can’t,” he said.

“I know,” I responded—and then I tripped and fell on the sidewalk. Drunkenness aside, maybe I needed a physical wound on my knee to remind myself not to talk to this guy. I said goodbye.

In the car on the way home, I knew it was over. There was no joy left, no excitement. There was just shame and guilt.

Safe in my own bed, I cried, but there were tears of relief mixed in with the grief. He emailed me later to say that he loved me truly, and he hadn’t been using me, and he was very sorry for everything. I wished him well. And that was it.

It’s been nearly a year, and now, when I look back, I think Josh and I took advantage of each other. I used him the way I used food or alcohol—to distract myself from the fear and emptiness. To call our relationship “love” would be a perversion of the term. What we had was a mutual addiction.

I wouldn’t do it all over again, but I’m using the experience to fuel writing that will, hopefully, make others in my position feel less lonely. I wrote a pilot about an emotional affair and called it “Codependent AF.” And my next novel centers on an alcoholic ensnared in a decade-long affair.

I’m so sorry I did some real-life research for these projects, but maybe some good can come out of it. I’m still single. I’ve retired from trying to “fix” anybody. I don’t know when I’ll have a real, loving romantic relationship, but I trust it will happen. I’m doing life one breath, one step, one moment at a time. And I’m done being anyone else’s dirty little secret.

Alana Mayo Is Changing the Future of Hollywood

34-year-old head of production and development a t O ut l ier Society, is happily riding shotgun with her AirPods firmly in place.

She’s not listening to music or a podcast; no one is rolling calls on the other line. She just likes to be ready for anything.

A 12-year veteran of the f ilm industry—most recently a VP at Paramount Pictures, where she worked on The Big Short, Fences, and Selma—Mayo has spent the last nine months turning the start-up that Michael B. Jordan launched in 2016 (and named after the Malcolm Gladwell book) into a proper studio.

And when you’re trying to go from celebrity LLC to Hollywood heavyweight, being plugged in is simply part of the job.

At any given moment, Outlier, which has only three full-time employees including Mayo and 31-year-old Jordan, is developing an impressive slate of feature films, scripted and nonscripted TV shows, short-form Web series, and a panoply of other platform-agnostic content. “What is so great about this company is that you can be bold and quick and fail without losing hundreds of millions of dollars, and adapt from there,” Mayo says when we sit down in a high-gloss conference room Outlier shares with Skydance Media, the Santa Monica company behind blockbusters like World War Z, Jack Reacher, and several Mission: Impossibles.

“I always describe us as a millennial company. I think, because Michael and I are actually in this demographic, we so clearly see the opportunity in reaching people outside of traditional means.”

And reaching people is the mission: Mayo considers “meeting the audience where they’re at” to be her primary concern. “I don’t think the world is fixed by content, but I’d say

it is 100 percent informed by content and the images people see,” she says. “I often think back on what I remember from my childhood and how that shaped the image of myself.

I think content has a really profound effect on kids.”

In March the studio became one of the first to publicly adopt inclusion riders, a contract amendment that guarantees cast and crew diversity on all productions. The decision was a no-brainer. “Being a person of color, we’re always fighting for inclusion,” Jordan says. “So when we’re able to be in a position of power to bring people in? I didn’t think twice about that. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a thing? Oh, cool.

Great.’ ” And in July, Outlier got its first vote of industry approval in the form of five Emmy nominations for a modern reimagining of Fahrenheit 451 for HBO. Together the digitally savvy pair pulls inspiration from social media, obscure comic books, even an inkling that something is about to pop in the zeitgeist. “We don’t have a strict for-

mula to how we f ind intellectual property, but there shouldn’t be any rock left unturned,” says Jordan, who is currently filming back-to-back Outlier projects in Atlanta. “I’ll send Alana a DM or a post on Instagram that inspired my mind. It’s more or less me throwing stuff her way to see if she thinks there’s something there.

Then we go back and forth and see if there’s any existing intellectual property or articles that might support the story or if it’s something that we build from the ground up.”

Oftentimes an aching void in the marketplace is the perfect place to start. Raising Dion, a forthcoming Netflix series about a young boy with superpowers, is Outlier’s response to Black Panther. “There are so few science-fiction films or TV shows that have people of color as the star.

And not in a way where it is the usual paradigm and you’re just casting it differently, but where you’re actually embracing other people and their culture,” Mayo says. “Whoopi Goldberg talked about how [growing up] she

never saw black people in the future in film and television. As a child she was like, ‘What happens to us?’ ” From an early age Mayo struggled to answer that question for herself. A child of the eighties, she never identif ied w ith era classics like Sixteen Candles. “I’m from Chicago, so I should be like, ‘Oh, John Hughes,’ but I did not relate to that movie at all,” she says. “I grew up identifying as an outsider. I had these weird, potentially contradictory parts of my identity.” Mayo’s mom, Maisha, is a Jehovah’s Witness who worked in entertainment law. Her dad, Barry, is a meditation enthusiast and retired radio executive who helped launch New York’s WRKS-FM. “To grow up with weird, idiosyncratic people who did not look at that as a deficit allowed me and my brothers to embrace doing things differently,” she says. “Like, ‘Yeah, we are black kids raised in Chicago in this devout Christian religion, but also we’re all of these other things. And all of these things can exist as a whole.’ I was

lucky to grow up that way. I think it very directly led me to what I’m doing professionally now.”

Back at Skydance, Mayo and company stand out among the framed Tom Cruise posters and comically oversize movie props. Her assistant, Christina (employee number three), a recent Columbia University grad with bleached-out blue hair and a near-encyclopedic knowledge of film, keeps answering her cell phone, “Alana Mayo’s office!” At one point during our photo shoot, a female Skydance executive in slacks and a button-down hovers in a door frame.

“I’m loving this. I’m texting Lena,” she teases, referring to Mayo’s fiancée, Lena Waithe, Emmy-winning writer and the creator of The Chi. Mayo lets out a laugh—“I’m never going to live this one down, am I?” she says—but continues to clack away on her laptop as a hairstylist sets the edges on her braids.

Later, while drinking her second coffee of the morning, she talks about her experience of being black in white spaces. “This is how we dress.

This is how I wear my hair. And I think it is really, really cool for people like us to occupy these spaces because one feeds the other…. We’re finally at a place where I feel like ‘the system’ is excited by young people coming in with a different point of view,” she says. “To be able to work alongside a company like this”—she gestures around Skydance—“means a big-budget, all-audience movie is possible. It allows us to feel emboldened to change and experiment.”

In other words, it allows Outlier to change the industr y from the inside out, something that hasn’t always been possible. “My off ice was always f illed w ith people of color and gays and women. And for that, I was ostracized,” says Oscarnominated director Lee Daniels, for whom Mayo interned while in college at Columbia University. “That Alana is being embraced for it makes my heart swell.” When I ask Mayo whether she identifies as a disruptor, her eyes light up. “I love that word,” she says. “I love disruptor. I love innovation. I’m a contrarian by nature, so anything that is about fucking with the status quo is very exciting to me. I would love to think

of this company, and everybody who works at it, as a disruptor.”

Hollywood is, after all, a fickle town.

“There is a history in this industry of trending,” Mayo concedes. “I’m not optimistic enough to believe that the moment happening right now will not be a trend.”

But she hopes that by the time the tides shift, too many outliers will already have a seat at the conference room table. “People who are looked at as ‘other’ are kicking ass in the industry right now,” Mayo says. “They are setting themselves up for incredible longevity and creating paths for a ton of people to come in behind them, so it won’t really matter when the powers that be don’t feel this to be valuable anymore. At the risk of sounding obnoxious, we’re trying to build something that feels like a legacy and not like a moment.”

shutdown started with pizza, wine, and 20-ish frustrated female senators. It was Aaron Sorkin–esque, except zero men were present.

By the first week of October, the partisan battle had dragged Washington to a halt. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D–N.H.) invited the women to her office to discuss a plan to reopen the government that Senator Susan Collins (R–Maine) had put forth. “There were a lot of people—ahem, men—who would have liked to be the bullies on the playground and just cross their arms and see who had to back down first,” Senator Patty Murray (D–Wash.) recalls. “We didn’t want to wait to see who backed down.”

She’s heard that women politicians are more polite and more patient than men, but that wasn’t their motivation: “What we were was impatient.” To finish it. To get back to business.

When the shutdown ended at last, the late Senator John McCain (R–Ariz.) tipped his hat to his female colleagues: “Leadership, I must fully admit, was provided primarily from women in the Senate.”

The Senate comprises 100 members. At the time of the 2013 fracas, its female faction was made up of 16 Democrats and four Republicans. Today the Senate boasts 23 women (only 52 have ever served). It’s a paltry improvement, but leaps and bounds better than the fraction of women in power in other strata of influence: Just six governors are women. Only 24 Fortune 500 companies are women-led— that’s less than 5 percent.

Sen. Shaheen wants to see the Senate look like America, with an equal gender split. (Hers is a moderate stance; when asked at what point there will be enough women on the Supreme Court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg pronounced, “When there are nine.”) But even a modest increase in women could make a difference in how the legislative branch operates and votes and affects all our lives.

The midterm elections will see more women than ever on the ballot. What we don’t know is how many of those candidates will win. If current female incumbents hold their seats, a woman-versus-woman race in Arizona will inch the number of women in the Senate up to 24. Some pollsters think it’s possible that Democratic Representative Jacky Rosen could win

in Nevada or Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn could come out ahead in Tennessee, which would push the number to 25 or 26 and create a coalition with far more influence than women have had so far.

With a result like that, we’d be closer than ever to getting the answer to a question that has tantalized and divided political scientists for decades: What would happen to our gridlocked, super-partisan politics if women surpassed the tipping point?

THE IDEA OF THE TIPPING POINT

dates back to 1977, when Rosabeth Moss Kanter, then a professor at Yale University and Harvard Law School, theorized the idea of critical mass as it applies to women in positions of power. Kanter observed that women had to make up at least 30 percent of a team to contribute at their full potential. Under that threshold, women were often dismissed as token representatives of their gender—not equal participants, let alone persuasive decision makers. Ever since then, experts have debated the ideal proportion: Is it 35 percent? Would 25 be sufficient?

Whatever the number, women in federal government haven’t reached it.

“The point is to be included—not seen as an outsider,” says Kanter, now chair and director of Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.

Make no mistake, it does help to have one woman, or a handful, in “the room where it happens.” That was visible in April, when Senator Tammy Duckworth (D–Ill.) gave birth to her daughter, Maile. Less than two weeks later she was back in the Senate, Maile in tow, for a vote. But Maile’s presence there—let alone her warm welcome—

Babies have been banned from the floor as far back as all the people who serve in the Senate can remember. When Sen. Duckworth learned she was pregnant, she asked Senator Amy Klobuchar (D–Minn.) to lead a bipartisan effort to strike down the rule. For months Sen. Klobuchar met with colleagues to convince them to support a reversal.

Some on the Hill were worried about whether—the horror!—Sen. Duckworth would have to breastfeed. But Sen. Klobuchar made her case, and the rule was overturned with unanimous consent. “I think it would do us good… to see a pacifier next to the antique inkwells on our desks,” said Senator Dick Durbin (D–Ill.) at the time.

It’s a nice sentiment, but it overlooks the fact that the United States remains the lone industrialized nation in the world that doesn’t guarantee paid parental leave. Kanter believes that more elected women would lead to changes in policies like paid leave or access to health care. But Georgetown University professor Michele Swers, Ph.D., is more skeptical. While she acknowledges that women have unique experiences to draw on that can make men view certain political issues with a fresh perspective, she cautions that women are not immune to the extreme partisanship that has infected Wash-

ington, despite the notion that women are reputed to be better at collaboration and risk assessment than men. “At the national level, there’s just less room for collaboration than there used to be,” Swers says.

Even so, women in the Senate have tried to make the most of their low numbers. It was former Senator Barbara Mikulski (D–Md.) who set out to boost women’s collective power with routine bipartisan dinners. Credit where credit is due, notes Sen. Murray: “Because we took the time separate from legislative action to know where people come from…then when those impasses are reached, it’s much more likely that someone will reach out and ask, ‘How can we solve this?’”

There’s evidence, too, that women in office use their voice to different effect than men. In a 2010 University of Minnesota study, researchers found that women in the House of Representatives give more f loor speeches.

(How else to be heard in public?) And female politicians tend to emphasize issues that matter more to women and families (never mind that most families include men too): A deep dive into 2018 congressional transcripts found that female representatives spent more than twice as much time on health care in their speeches as male legislators did. Those efforts could have a greater

impact, in part, because of the “Jill Robinson effect.” Two political scientists coined the term in 2011, positing that because bias makes it harder for women to get elected, those who do persevere are more adept lawmakers. (The phenomenon is named after baseball icon Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball.) To wit: The research found that congresswomen claim up to 9 percent more in f lexible dollars for their districts than congressmen do. Want to better fund education or health care in your area? Elect women.

much better than government when it comes to female representation— women make up just 21 percent of corporate board seats in the S&P 1500—active steps have been taken to boost their ranks. California recently passed bills that would require publicly traded companies in that state to have at least one woman on their board by 2020, and more women, depending on a company’s size, by 2022.

Europe has had such requirements for a decade. In 2006, for example, Norway established a quota for women on boards. France now has one too; the aim for female representation is 40 percent. The laws were passed in the name of fairness, but they’re also good for business. A 2016 report from global nonprofit Catalyst found that companies with three or more women on their board of directors, no matter the size, outperformed the competition across three crucial metrics: return on equity, return on sales, and return

on invested capital. In other words, money, money, money. And research from Miriam Schwartz-Ziv, Ph.D., assistant professor at Michigan State University, has found that members of gender-balanced boards are twice as active (meaning, likely to take initiative) as non-gender-balanced boards.

That math underscores principles that William P. Lauder, executive chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies, says have been baked into the DNA of his family’s business since its inception. In April the company added two more women, Jennifer Hyman, cofounder and CEO of Rent the Runway, and Jennifer Tejada, CEO of PagerDuty, to the board, which means eight of its 17 directors are now women. (For perspective, just three Fortune 500 companies have an equal number of male and female board members.) Lauder chafes at the

excuse that there are too few qualified women candidates in the pipeline.

Lauder, a member of the 30 Percent Coalition, an initiative to create more diverse corporate boards, maintains women are a “value add” for companies’ boards. Before beginning this latest search, he remembers he was explicit with his current board members: “I said, ‘Here’s what we need—we need expertise in cyber and we need expertise in social and digital.’ On top of that, I said, ‘We need more women directors.’ Those were the criteria: female, with these qualifications.”

Hyman notes that women are responsible for 85 percent of purchases in the U.S., so it just makes sense to empower them in business—who better to know the consumer? She joined Estée Lauder because she trusted her opinion would be valued. “It wasn’t that they hit a number,” she says. “It was that they embraced the diversity of the people who were there across every metric. They say it out loud.”

When Ayanna Pressley became the first black woman ever to serve on the Boston City Council in 2009, she did not feel, from the media and the public at least, the kind of embrace that Hyman describes. What she remembers was the sense that people outside the council believed her success was owed to the idea that voters had wanted to elect a “first.” That narrative, she says, “took away from what I had accomplished.” (After she defeated a 10-term incumbent for the Democratic nomination in September, Pressley is now expected to be elected to Congress in November.)

Pressley hoped that chatter would die down in 2013, when Michelle Wu was elected to serve on the council. But both women insist it wasn’t until two more women, Anissa Essaibi George and Andrea Joy Campbell, joined in 2015 (and pushed the 13-person council over the 30 percent mark) that their gender started to matter less.

“There had been a lot of pressure on us to represent this whole spectrum [of womanhood],” Wu says. “Would we line up together? Would we take opposite sides? There was so much examination, solely about our relationship with each other because we are women.” The addition of Essaibi George and Campbell made clear that they serve (continued on page 108)

Hiring Bots Are a Thing— This Is How to Beat Them

hunting, human beings aren’t always looking at your résumé.

Experts used to say recruiters spend six seconds reviewing your résumé before tossing it in the trash (grab their attention fast!). But forget that idea— computers have been doing the gatekeeping for years, screening for keywords and employment gaps. Now tech is taking things to the next level. Much the way Netflix suggests Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt after you watch one 30 Rock, companies are starting to use artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated tests, in addition to algorithms, to not only find candidates for a job but also predict who will kick ass at it. The hope is that these tools will reduce costly turnover and, most important, help fix the human error and bias that have historically shut out women and minorities.

Great goal. But how will this all work?

After gathering company data, “these systems would be trained in ways that reflect ideas of ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ at a given company,” says Meredith Whittaker, cofounder of AI Now, a research institute at New York University that studies the social effects of AI. “But

if a company isn’t diverse, especially in executive and leadership roles, [the software] would likely replicate existing biases that see certain people, often white men, as inherently more capable and successful than others.”

In other words, version 2.0 of the hiring bots may be an improvement—or maybe not. But they’re coming. So here’s how to work them to your advantage.

Get past the first gatekeeper.

At least 98 percent of Fortune 500 companies use an automated applicant tracking system (ATS), or résumé screener, according to Jobscan, a tech company that helps applicants improve their résumé to beat the machines. “ATS software is designed to assess an applicant based on keywords,” says Amanda Augustine, a career advice expert at TopResume, a New York City résumé writing company. Without the right ones, she warns, your résumé “may never get past this initial digital gatekeeper.”

A simple hack: “Pick out the important keywords located in the job listing and incorporate them in your ‘Skills’ and ‘Work Experience’ sections,” Augustine says.

Not sure which are the most important ones? You can make a word cloud out of a job description using a free tool like Wordle, she suggests.

For women in particular, certain parts of a résumé may hinder their chances of getting past an ATS. “A key issue is gaps in employment,” says Ifeoma Ajunwa, Ph.D., an assistant professor of organizational behavior at Cornell University. Some algorithms, Ajunwa explains, “might be trained to reject résumés with gaps, which could mean

comparing their answers with those given by a company’s top performers.

Platforms like Pymetrics also say their software can also decrease hiring biases, such as discriminating against résumés with female or nonwhite-sounding names, by focusing on selected traits that social science research says are largely free of gender and racial bias, like risk tolerance and planning style. “If a hiring manager puts the most emphasis on hiring from a résumé, women and people of color have a reduced chance of getting the job,” Polli says.

The method appears to be working, at least for some companies. While Pymetrics doesn’t disclose client names for privacy reasons, it has reported impressive gains in 2018 hiring: an 18 percent increase in female technical hires and a 20 percent increase in minority interns at one financial service company.

But some industry professionals are wary. “A lot of algorithmic hiring tools use data from an employer’s existing network or what’s available on the Internet,” says Stephanie Lampkin, CEO and founder of Blendoor, whose hiring technology aims to reduce unconscious bias by hiding data like names and ages. “If you rely solely on limited information, you’re not accessing underrepresented talent.”

If you’re asked to take this kind of assessment during your job search, Augustine recommends you do a little sleuthing. “Check sites like Glassdoor to find out if a prospective employer is known for using this kind of technology as part of their candidate evaluation process,” she says. “If you know anyone who works at the company or has interviewed with this employer in the past, reach

Augustine says to consider proper formatting too, because complicated design elements can get lost on the software. “Stick to a simple design that doesn’t include embedded charts, images, or unusual fonts.”

Make the predictive algorithm predict you.

Companies are also moving past traditional hiring assessments like personality tests (which experts say don’t accurately predict your job success) and are instead using AI, algorithms, and neuroscience games to better match your abilities to a role. Frida Polli, Ph.D., created Pymetrics, an AI-based recruiting platform, to fix the hiring process after seeing her fellow Harvard Business School classmates struggle to find the right jobs. “I was amazed to see how many people put a lot of time and effort into getting recruited into a new field and then were not happy when they actually started working in it.” If they’d gotten a better understanding of their fit for that role, she says, some of that pain—for workers and companies—may have been prevented. Polli says Pymetrics uses algorithms to predict whether someone’s skills line up with a particular job by

Your mood while taking these tests is also key, says Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Ph.D., a professor of business psychology at University College London and Columbia University. If you can, he says, “take the assessments in a calm moment when you’re awake but not overly aroused.”

Translation: coffee but not too much coffee.

Or skip the bots altogether.

Eventually you’ll need to win over a person in real life to get a job. In this ever-evolving hiring world, you have to make networking a priority.

“Studies have shown that you are 10 times more likely to land the job when your application is accompanied by an employee referral,” Augustine says. Those real-life connections are key, she adds. “If you can get someone to pass your résumé along to the hiring manager, thus bypassing the initial application gatekeepers, you’re more likely to get the interview.” And you’re one step closer to your dream job.

It’s been 40 years since the first successful IVF birth.

Now an estimated one million embryos are on ice in the U.S., but who gets to decide whether these “maybe babies” are human life, a clump of cells, or something in between?

embryo in my uterus. Wearing a paper gown and cap, I was led by a nurse to a surgical suite, where I placed my legs in stirrups. I assumed the position, and a second nurse confirmed my identity while someone else inserted a catheter through my cervix. Then a doctor—and this is the term he used—squirted a roughly 0.1 millimeter bundle of cells into me.

After six months of infertility treatment, I was prepared to have some emotional reaction, but it felt more like I was being prepared for a covert science experiment than a much-hoped-for pregnancy. Then came the photo.

As I was wheeled out of the operating room, someone handed me a heavily magnified shot of the embryo printed on glossy paper. I let out the kind of unruly laugh that has no place in a hospital. The seriousness of the moment had been punctured by the arrival of what felt like a souvenir, the kind shilled by amusement parks after a ride on their tallest roller coaster.

Visually, it wasn’t much to see: a gray, scaly moon blown up to the size of an Oreo. Still, it was my Oreo moon. I put the picture in the corner of my bedroom mirror and gazed at it while my husband gave me the nightly progesterone shot to help my “maybe baby” survive the precious days

after in vitro fertilization. A few weeks later, after I miscarried, I tucked the photo in a drawer where I knew it would get lost but not destroyed.

Four months passed, and it was time to do it all over again. Hair in cap, legs in stirrups, squirt. Afterward I tossed the photo of embryo number two in with the post-op paperwork, uninterested in contemplating its potential.

Today I have all the evidence I need in the form of a sturdy one-year-old boy named Levi. But Levi’s very first photo?

Yeah, I don’t know where that went.

These are some ambivalent feelings, I know. But the fiveday-old embryos often used in IVF can do this to a person.

They’re tiny, smaller than a grain of sand, and they give rise to some big emotions and bigger questions. What, really, was I holding a picture of? A person? A speck on a page? A chemistry experiment that could be destined to fail?

Forty years after IVF became an option, we’re only beginning to figure that out. “Medically, we know what an embryo is. But what kind of moral and legal status does it have? There isn’t much agreement about that,” says Lisa Campo-Engelstein, Ph.D., an associate professor of bioethics at Albany Medical College in New York, who writes about reproductive ethics. “Are they persons, property, or something in between?”

And what if your own answer to that question changes?

Or your partner disagrees? Ruth Whippman, a 44-year-old author based in northern California, conceived her second son, Zeph, through IVF. At first she rarely thought about the four extra embryos she and her husband kept in the freezer following his birth. But then, about a year later, Whippman found herself sentimentalizing her frozen embryos, or “frosties,” as they’re sometimes referred to on infertility discussion boards.

There are currently an estimated one million frosties in the United States, a source of both hope and stress for potential parents around the country. Research shows that figuring out what to do with unused embryos is a difficult and contentious process: A University of California, San Francisco, study found that one third of

people keep their embryos on ice because they are unable to decide what to do with them. Sometimes this is the result of ambivalence; other times it’s because of a disagreement between a couple. “It crept up on me that their genetic material had already been set—whether they had curly hair, were male or female,” Whippman says of her own embryos. “It felt like, These are my kids, and they are in the freezer. As if they didn’t have their coat on and were cold.” Her husband, Neil, a software product manager, felt little connection to what he calls his “AmEx points,” a reference to the monthly $45 storage fees they paid with their credit card. (Even if clients stop paying those fees, few facilities will dispose of them out of fear of getting sued down the line.)

While Whippman always thought about having three kids, it was the existence of the extra embryos that turned this hazy longing into an undeniable need. She and Neil decided to give their embryos a shot. Two were deemed viable to try, and the second one stuck. Now they are parents to three sons, two of whom were fertilized at the same time— fraternal twins born four years apart.

Whippman describes herself as “100 percent pro-choice” and sees no conflict between her feelings about her embryos and a woman’s right to abort them. “These are my emotions for me to deal with about my embryos. That is what choice means,” she says. “The embryos meant totally different things to me and to my husband. To him, they were as close to nothing as you can possibly get. To me, they were as close to everything as you can possibly get.”

Whippman is describing what Campo-Engelstein calls a relational model for embryos, which means their moral status can be defined only by the person or people who created them (or received them through a donation). In this thinking, the embryo doesn’t intrinsically have a moral status. It’s not a little person. It’s also not not a little person. “Embryos are valuable because people value them, not because of their innate worth,” Campo-Engelstein says.

While a “you do you” approach may work in our personal lives, it can be tricky legally. Take, for example, the recent

accidental destruction of thousands of frozen eggs and embryos at fertility clinics in San Francisco and Cleveland.

There are currently more than 60 pending lawsuits seeking compensation. “How do we explain that loss in legal terms? Some people see them as frozen children; other people see them as bunches of cells,” Campo-Engelstein says. “There’s such a huge spectrum of views that it can be hard to even begin the conversation.” (Of course, this question—When does life begin?—is one people have grappled with for centuries.)

What to do with leftover embryos complicates decisions about whether or not to use frozen embryos at all as well as how to pick among them. For instance, the Internet raged when Chrissy Teigen announced that she and husband John Legend had chosen to transfer a female embryo in 2015 (now their daughter, Luna). Critics were uncomfortable with the couple selecting an embryo based on sex; some saw it as evidence that IVF was paving the way for “designer” babies. (It is not currently possible to single out

an embryo for traits like high intelligence, eye color, or a calm demeanor.)

Like a rising number of IVF patients, Teigen and Legend had their embryos tested for chromosomal abnormalities before transferring them. During this process, the sex is revealed, and some patients choose to learn that information. As Teigen saw it, the idea that she should not interfere with fate was ridiculous. By doing IVF, necessary because of the couple’s struggle with infertility, she had already intervened with nature’s plan. On Twitter, she asked, “What is that difference though? I’ve already created embryos with a doctor. Only after must it be random?” Two years later Teigen and Legend used their remaining embryo to become pregnant with their son, Miles.

The backlash Teigen experienced may be due in part to the mixed messages Americans receive about embryos.

Right now, if you have embryos to freeze, you have control over what happens to them next, and there are no laws governing how long you can keep them on ice. On the other hand, the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, bans federal funding for research involving human embryos. The bill’s authors, then representatives Jay Dickey (R–Ark.) and Roger Wicker (R– Miss.), opposed such research because of their belief that an embryo is, in fact, a life.

This ban has handicapped infertility research, says Barbara Collura, president and CEO of Resolve: The National Infertility Association, a nonprofit advocacy organization. With few exceptions, doctors and scientists working on embryo-related projects are not eligible to apply for the nearly $30 billion worth of grant money from the National Institutes of Health and must rely on funding from other sources. “The fact is, we know more about a mouse embryo than a human embryo,” Collura says. “The embryo is the holy grail, and researchers have their hands tied.”

But even with all the controversy, more and more are using frozen embryos to help build their families: IVF rates continue to rise, and cases of donation went from 621 cycles in 2004 to 1,179 cycles in 2014, according to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. These donations can take place through fertility clinics, embryo banks, or personal connections forged in person or online.

As with all embryo-related matters, the experience varies dramatically.

Consider Tina and Benjamin Gibson of Knoxville, Tennessee. Because of Benjamin’s cystic fibrosis, the couple wasn’t able to have biological children and had long been considering creating a family through adoption. Then one night Tina’s dad heard about embryo donation on the news and rushed to tell them about it. After some research and deliberation, Tina, a 27-year-old schoolteacher, and Benjamin, a 34-year-old information technologist, decided to give it a shot.

They reached out to a nonprofit in Knoxville, the National Embryo Donation Center. After a few medical tests, the Gibsons were able to choose embryos from the NEDC’s large database of donor profiles. When they went in for their embryo transfer in March 2017, they learned that the donated embryo they were about to use was 24 years old. About a year later, they became the proud parents of the longest-known frozen embryo to result in a

Embryos (continued from page 107) successful birth. “While we have never had our own biological kids, I can’t imagine feeling any different,” Tina says of Emma. “The connection comes when you make your decision to commit your life to another human.”

The Gibsons were happy to talk about their experience, which was covered in national outlets like CNN and The Atlantic. “When we first thought of embryo adoption, it seemed very strange and unfamiliar. We did a lot of praying and soul-searching about it,” Tina says. Eventually they came to the conclusion that embryo donation is consistent with their antiabortion outlook. “We really believe this was saving a life. For us, an embryo is a life.”

Many religious Christians share the Gibsons’ belief that life begins at conception, whether it happens in or outside of the womb. IVF patients with these views often try to use or donate all their extra embryos. Another less common option is to have what is known as a compassionate transfer, in which doctors place an embryo in a woman’s womb during a point in her cycle when it’s unlikely to survive.

Others see an embryo more as a rough blueprint for a baby than a baby itself. After Ona Brazwell had received treatment for a rare ovarian cancer, it didn’t look as though the then nearly 40-year-old engineer from Maine would be able to get pregnant. When artificial insemination and IVF with her own egg and donated sperm failed, she found embryo donations.

Brazwell opted for an open donation, as opposed to an anonymous one.

That way her potential future children could “know their roots,” she says. She hit dead end after dead end and was in “a dark place” when she saw a post on a surrogacy discussion board: “Seeking Christian Couple for Anonymous Donation.” Brazwell wasn’t Christian, in a relationship, or in pursuit of an anonymous donation. She wrote the couple anyway, and eventually they agreed to an open donation. Today she has twins born from the embryos, a son and a daughter. The children see their embryo donors, whom they call “auntie” and “uncle,” at least once a year.

Since giving birth to her children, Brazwell has been looking into epigenetics, or how certain genes can

The Tipping Point switch on and off. This happens during pregnancy, when a mother’s mental health, nutrition, and hormones can affect a child’s long-term development. “There’s all sorts of research out there showing that stuff is happening in the womb,” she says.

Over the years Brazwell has observed shared physical similarities with her kids—“My daughter looks just like me as a child,” she says—the fact they gestated inside of her makes them, in ways scientists are only beginning to comprehend, also physically hers.

Unlike Brazwell’s or the Gibsons’ donors, I wasn’t willing to recycle my extra embryos. After the miscarriage and Levi, we still had two left over.

We don’t want more children, but I also can’t imagine them being born to someone else. Would he have my smile? Would she have my husband’s animated brow? I’d always be looking.

(My husband feels otherwise.)

It’s been a year since we sent in the paperwork informing our clinic that we would like our embryos to be used for research in the lab. By now there’s a good chance that our frosties have helped to train an incoming embryologist, or to test a new freezing technique.

When friends and family raise eyebrows at this decision, I explain that it costs $1,200 a year to keep an embryo on ice at our clinic, an amount that would better serve our sons’ college funds. But it isn’t just about money. The decision was also borne of a desire to free myself of those nagging what-ifs—What if we implanted those embryos? What if they turned into children? What if I am a terrible person because I don’t want to give them a chance?—and focus on the what is.

There are still days when those questions torment me. But most of the time, when I think about those embryos, I think about what they already brought me: my second child, a child who wasn’t going to come into the world the old-fashioned way. Levi is where my embryos story ends. And it’s my story to tell.

When Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D–N.D.) declined to vote for stricter gun restrictions in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, shooting, she said in an interview with Time that the backlash from women nationwide surprised her: “A female friend in the Senate said to me, ‘You know, it’s because they feel you represent all women, not just the women of North Dakota.’”

EARLIER IN 2018, AS YET ANOTHER

government shutdown over how and whether to protect the Dreamers loomed, Sen. Collins introduced a compromise bill that would have given the young undocumented immigrants legal status over time and fund border security. Her effort came closer than other prospective fixes, but failed in a 54–45 vote. An overwhelming number of female senators voted for her amendment, 18 in all. (Four opposed, and one wasn’t present.) Sen. Shaheen points out that with six more likeminded women, the bill would have passed. Nine or 10 more, and women would have had a critical mass—and votes to spare.

Perhaps the headline would have read: “Women Save the Dreamers.”

But a better result? If people had looked at the numbers and seen that more than 60 senators with different points of view found a path forward.

That, explains Ellen Pao, the activist who cofounded the nonprofit Project Include after losing a gender discrimination suit against the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers in 2015, is the real purpose of a critical mass. The more women in power, the less gender has to be discussed. “People need to focus on full representation for all people,” Pao says. “Not just on gender, but on race, sexual orientation, age, and socioeconomic background.

We have to keep that goal in mind and realize that 30 percent is nothing, or at least it’s not enough. A threshold is not a destination.”

Constance Elaine Womack. My mother had a really dear friend named Connie, who passed away of cancer right before my twin sister and I were born, so I was named after her.

What’s something you wish you’d written?

Thelma & Louise, but I got to do the second-best thing and work with the film’s writer, Callie Khouri [on Nashville].

What’s your most irrational fear?

Failing. But one thing I’ve learned is that even if you do fail, you grow so much from that experience that it isn’t really failure.

You’re stuck on a desert island and can bring only three things.

What are they?

I’d want to have a man there, a knife, and a memoir called To Shake the Sleeping Self that my friend Jedidiah Jenkins wrote.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

Being with my friends and family with great conversation, good food, and laughter.

What’s the greatest invention of all time?

The wheel!

What chapter of your own life would be most fascinating to read?

This one! I know more now than I ever have.
