PETER Dear Lanceteers Welcome to 2018. We look forward to a productive year with our economy and the healthcare industry growing.

We welcome the following new pathologists to Lancet:    

Dr Andiswa Pooe who joined the Bloemfontein team as a Haematologist on 2nd of January 2018.

Dr Karissa Mannaru who joined the Richmond team as a Haematologist on 1st of February 2018.

Dr Madeleine Pieters who joined the Bloemfontein team as a Microbiologist on the 1st of February 2018.

Prof. Sonja Boy will join the Pretoria team on the 1st of March 2018 as a Specialist Head and Neck Anatomical, and Cytopathologist

The LabOS Laboratory Information System project is well underway. Departmental workgroups are cleaning up dictionaries and designing the work ow of the new system.

LabOS branch Laboratory Analyser Interfaces have been installed at the Brenthurst Laboratory and will be rolled out to all our branch labs in the coming months. Work group and Developer training commences in March/April. It is important that all staff members are involved with this project and adhere to the timelines communicated by Elab so that we can remain on track to go live on LabOS towards the end of 2019.

Our Debtors team will be planning the implementation of the LabOS Debtors' Management System to replace the Meditech one. This changeover will happen when the LabOS goes live.

The Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Kimberley Laboratories are progressing well. The Cape Town Histology Laboratory moved to Century City on 2nd of January. Bloemfontein's Busamed Hospital opened on the 7th of February and Welkom's Ernest Oppenheimer Hospital opened on the 15th of March. Our Bloemfontein Anatomical Pathology Laboratory will open on the 1st of June with Dr Marco Otto in charge. Dr Otto is spending some time in our Cape Town practice before moving to Bloemfontein. In KZN the Stanger Hospital opened in March and the Pietermaritzburg Eden Gardens Hospital in May. The new Richmond Cytology Laboratory is under construction. This large, streamlined facility will enable us to cater for volume growth and provide staff with improved working conditions.

We will introduce Vacutainer Safety Needles this year to protect our nursing staff from the physical and emotional trauma of needle stick injuries.

Our test centralisation project continues with routine tests from most of the Johannesburg laboratories having been centralised to Richmond now. The Milpark, Rosebank and DGMC routine work will be centralised this quarter.

Centralised logging implementation is being driven by Lauren Stephenson and will be introduced in phases this year. This process reduces logging errors, reduces request form scanning TAT and increases staff ef ciency.

The East Rand staff rostering pilot project started on the 1st of March and lasts 4 months.

New biometric time and attendance systems have been installed to enable automated and integrated capturing of hours at work on the VIP payroll system.

Lancet Rwanda On the 2nd and 3rd of February, LANCET LABORATORIES RWANDA celebrated their two years anniversary. They had a successful CME (Continuing Medical Education) programme with doctors in Kigali, where Dr Ahmed Kalebi who is the CEO & MD of the Lancet group of Laboratories East Africa, together with Dr Gervais Ntakirutimana spoke about Evolution of FNA and Core Biopsies in the Diagnosis of Malignancies Overview. They had cake and dinner to celebrate the anniversary.

On 3rd of February the CEO and team travelled to Runda, where they had the following activities: 1. A nal match of the Anti-Cancer Tournament that was sponsored by Lancet Laboratories Rwanda.

2. Lancet Laboratories Rwanda handed 402 Mutuelle de Sante, which is a health insurance that helps people who are less fortunate get access to health care. These were given to people in need selected by the local leaders.

3. Dr Gervais Ntakirutimana had an informative session where he educated attendees about the cancer disease.

Lancet Nigeria Continuous Medical Education Clina-Lancet Laboratories Nigeria held their second annual Continuous Medical Education (CME) on the 27th of September 2017. The events theme was Advances in the Diagnosis and Management of Oncological Cases. It recorded an attendance of 199 people, cutting across medical doctors of different specialisations and laboratory management.

Dr Ahmed Kalebi from Lancet Kenya handled two topics on The Role of Immunophenotyping in Cancer Diagnosis and Updates on Helicabacter Pylori Testing. Dr Seyi Akande spoke on the Signi cance of Colorectal Cancer and Dr John Ojukwu spoke on the Immunohistochemistry in the Management of Malignant Tumours. This event brought accolades and highlighted Clina-Lancet Laboratories as a zenith in Pathology.

Fight Against Cancer Clina-Lancet Laboratories Nigeria took part in the Project Pink-Blue event that took place on the 7th of October 2017 in Lagos. The event focused on Breast and Cervical Cancer. During this event, free screening was offered to the public. Activities of this day included aerobics, dancing and a 5km walk.

KENYA TRAINING & ACCREDITATION Training-The Essence of Transformation Developing, Managing and Retaining Talent is one of the Lancet goals for 2017-2018. Pathologists Lancet Kenya (PLK) embarked on training its staff as part of improving staff knowledge and skills in their areas of work operations.

This year marks a decade of diagnostic excellence in Ghana as we kick start with celebrating Dr Paul S. Nyantakyi's achievement. Dr Nyantakyi was recently awarded with the Johns Hopkins Alumni award for Global Achievement in Baltimore.

The Global Achievement award is established to honour alumni who exemplify the Johns Hopkins tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the university and their profession in the international arena through their professional achievements or humanitarian service. The award is formerly known as the Knowledge for the World Award.

Those who have met Dr Nyantakyi sing praises for his ability to bring positive energy when needed. His motto is A man has got to do what a man has got to do and he lives by the Bible verse Matthew 7:7. Discipline and learning are his hallmark as he continues to pass on his knowledge and encourages life-long learning.

Annually we hold separate salary negotiations in each region with the regional SLC. Phlebotomy Learnership Graduation The Phlebotomy Learnership graduation was introduced late 2016, as we felt it was necessary to honour the Phlebotomy students for all their hard work and dedication during the course of the Learnership.

Cape Town-The Lancet footprint has been growing steadily in Cape Town, with seven 24hr labs opening 2016 - 2017 and two more labs in the pipeline for rst half of 2018. We have employed 87 permanent staff members from Jan-Nov 2017. Recruitment remains a challenge. DEPARTMENT DIAGNOSIS

Molecular Pathology Department Molecular pathology refers to the study of molecules in diseases. The molecules we speci cally test are for DNA and RNA, the genetic information contained in all organisms. Molecular pathology can be used to diagnose diseases, and guide prevention or treatment.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is the most commonly used technique in the molecular pathology lab, but it is not the only technique used. For this reason, although most staff refer to us as the PCR lab, we are of cially called the Molecular Pathology Department. We are located on the ground oor of the Lancet Corner. Dr Allison Glass heads up the department ably assisted by staff who are highly competent in their eld with decades of combined experience in molecular pathology. We are a young (some de nitely in spirit if no longer on paper), enthusiastic team that strives to offer an excellent service to Lancet, our doctors and patients.

Dr Raquel Viana and Dr Leandra Blann are our Senior Medical Scientists; Dr Karen Milstein is our Clinical Geneticist; Carl Morris is our General Laboratory Manager; and Saloshini (Natalie) Ramsamy is our Quality Of cer. Dr Caroline Turner-Babb, who has developed and grown our paternity testing, human identi cation and genetics sections, recently moved back to her homeland, England, but fortunately still consults for us remotely.

Routine section The bulk of molecular tests are run by the routine section. Sandra Benson, our Operational Manager, is responsible for ensuring the seamless and continuous ow of work. The majority of testing done is in the area of infectious diseases. PCR testing enables us to determine if a particular organism is present in a sample. Certain tests allow us to quantify how much of an organism is present in a sample. We are continuously introducing new tests, so if you receive a request for a test and cannot nd it on Meditech, give us a call to nd out if it is in the pipeline. Paternity Testing and Human Identi cation They say a picture speaks a 1000 words, so does your DNA. The more we learn about our DNA, the more power we have in decision making and personalised medicine. There are multiple molecular technologies available nowadays to tell us all different things about our DNA. Molecular Pathology is slowly but surely embracing almost all of the more commonly used techniques. It just depends on the question asked of it (your DNA).

1. Who are my parents, siblings, aunts and uncles?

2. Who does this dead body belong to?

3. A horrible lung disease called Cystic brosis is in my family, will my future children get it?

4. I am over 35 and worried the baby I am carrying might have Down syndrome. Can I nd out quickly?

The questions are endless, but all of the above can be answered in the Molecular Pathology's division of Human Identi cation and Genetics. This a rapidly expanding eld and the excitement is that, what was once only available to few people is now becoming more common practice, with increasing numbers of these test being paid by funders, and all from just a few drops of blood. It has never been so easy, and will continue to get easier, faster and cheaper.

We also collaborate with a number of labs both locally and abroad to offer a wide range of tests for hundreds of genetic diseases. Dr Karen Milstein offers genetic counselling to guide decisions around appropriate testing. We are in the process of streamlining our genetics testing process as these tests are often expensive and may not be reimbursed by the medical aids. Oncogenetics Cancer is a genetic disease caused by accumulation of DNA mutations and epigenetic alterations leading to unrestrained cell proliferation and neoplasm formation. As you can see not an easy subject. That is why we have a multidisciplinary team consisting of molecular scientists, histopathologists, haematologists and a clinical geneticist to provide our clinicians with cutting-edge diagnostics enabling personalised medicine the idea that treatment can be chosen based on the speci c requirements of the individual patient.

Using next-generation sequencing technology, we are now able to target and analyse several oncogenes in a single reaction. These speci c genetic alterations are linked to well-characterised pathways that drive the cancer process. Testing provides the pathologist and clinician with information that assists with diagnosis and prognosis, and guides treatment choices. Where are we headed Many advances are being made in the area of Molecular Pathology and the challenge is to keep up to date with what is new and happening, while deciding what should be implemented for routine use. It is a eld that is relevant to all areas of pathology. With this in mind, the Molecular Pathology Department strives to collaborate closely with all the other departments in order to provide relevant molecular testing for the various disciplines.

PATHOLOGY SPOTLIGHT

Meet Dr Leandra Blann I studied Biochemistry and Psychology at the then Rand Afrikaans University before continuing with an Honours and Masters degree in Biochemistry at the same institution. I then moved over to the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School campus to obtain a PhD in Anatomical Pathology. My thesis was on the Morphological, Immunohistochemical and Molecular Characterisation of Colorectal Cancer in young vs old patients, in an effort to determine whether these patients follow a sporadic or hereditary pathway.

After completing my degree, I worked at the CSIR in their Biosciences division and gained valuable experience in transformation of yeast to express human proteins for therapeutic applications. I decided to return to the medical research and diagnostic eld and worked at the MRC and then NHLS for several years. While at the Infection Control Services Lab of the NHLS at Wits, I implemented several new molecular diagnostic assays and was involved with the molecular analysis of hospital disease outbreaks. I was then approached by Drs Gritzman & Thatcher Inc to set up their molecular diagnostic lab and grew that from a few single gene tests to the rst diagnostic lab in South Africa to offer next-generation sequencing as a routine diagnostic assay. When the opportunity presented itself for me to join Lancet, I jumped at it! Being part of a multidisciplinary team with the aim to provide high accuracy, world-class molecular diagnostics, is very exciting!

What is your job tittle and responsibilities?

My job title is Medical Scientist in the Molecular Pathology Lab and I am responsible for the implementation of the next-generation sequencing platform for Oncogenetics. I will also be involved in expanding the testing portfolio of the platform to cover as many disciplines as possible.

What are the biggest challenges you face at work as a Pathologist?

Being a scientist, one always wants a de nitive answer exactly which gene mutation is responsible for a speci c cancer. Unfortunately that is not always feasible or possible in a diagnostic setting. Not being able to necessarily get to that point can be challenging. However, with the new technologies available such as next-generation sequencing, we are able to provide more possibilities than previously the case.

What are some of your Lancet highlights?

Something that has really stood out for me, is the enthusiasm of all the staff members at Lancet. Every person I ve met so far has been super excited about the implementation of the new technology and how this will bene t the patient in the end.

How has Lancet changed you since you joined the company and how long have you been with Lancet Laboratories?

I ve only been here for a two months, but nd it stimulating and ful lling to be part of a team that aims to provide the best possible service to our doctors and patients.

What advice would you give other employees?

Try and get involved in as many different aspects of your department as possible. Broaden your horizons as much as you can. We are in an exciting time in the history of medical science where the different elds are no longer separate entities. Working across disciplines is what sets us apart from the rest and bene ts the patients at the end of the day.

What is your motto and philosophy of life?

I draw inspiration from the following simple yet powerful quote from Paralympian Juan Jose Mendez Fernandez, who lost his left leg and left arm in a motorcycle accident: “Don't tell me you can't�

Dr Bets On behalf of the practice, I would like to express gratitude to the Van Rensburg Pathologists for the impressive function held on the 11th of November 2017. It was a great event that will leave a lasting impression on all of us and we greatly appreciate it. The food and the talk were perfect.

P.A.L.S (Pat Awareness Lenasia Society) is a group brought together by a passion for animals. It is a non-pro t organisation aimed at caring for animals and educating different communities in Johannesburg. The organisation has chosen to be the voice for animals by empowering our community to consider the basic needs of either your pets or of those around you. All funds raised from members' own initiatives such as dog shows, comedy shows, fun walks, face painting that are used to uplift informal areas in and around Lenasia in order to stop the

vicious cycle of homeless, neglected and abused animals.

Help us to help you to make this a community that lives in peace and harmony with animals. One of the organisation's objectives it is to educate and empower the community on how to take care of their pets or animals around them. To raise funds to uplift the Lenasia community through sterilisation and vaccination drives future initiates for the organisation include being able to host Charity Walks, Static Displays at Trade Route Mall, to complete 10 Vaccination & Sterilisation Drive for 2018, blanket and food drives, schools' curriculum- (Life Orientation). Kindly donate for the pets and if you have few hours to spare, please join the team on any of these dates to give back to our community.

Shabeer Rangraje Shabeer joined Lancet Laboratories 28 years ago working in various departments including Results/Registrations, Lablog, Training and Demolog to name a few. He brings a wealth of experience and will make a great contribution towards Lancet achieving overall organisational objectives.

He has been appointed as the Marketing Manager in KZN.

Nonkululeko Manuel Holds a National Diploma in Human Resource Management from the University of Johannesburg. She joined Lancet Laboratories in 2013 and has had a successful journey where she started as an HR Admin, promoted to an HR of cer, then later appointed as an HR Services Consultant.

She joined the BARC team as an Executive Administrator to the Medical Director on the 1st of December 2017.

Jerry Lekgoate I started working at Lancet in 2007 as a Receiving Admin Clerk (Auto Lab). In 2010 I joined the Billing Department as a Billing Clerk and then in 2012 I became the Billing Medical Aid Collector. 2014 I was appointed as Billing Task Team Supervisor until October 2017 when I joined the Collections Department.

Boitumelo Kamfwa I have over 10 years' working experience in Corporate Communications, Events and Marketing. My interest in Digital Marketing grew over the past 4 years with the fascination of evolving Digital Marketing trends and online organisation reputation management.

Kuventhiren Naidu I started working at Lancet in 2008 in the Call Centre Department as a Client Services Agent where I had the opportunity to be in different roles. In 2010, I was promoted to Team Leader and in 2012 I was appointed to Contact Centre Supervisor. In 2014 Call Centre went through a restructure and Client Services was moved under the management of Vanessa Engelbrecht where I was afforded unlimited growth and responsibilities within the department.

Through these roles, I have gained a great amount of experience and the product knowledge of the company. With these two attributes, I realised my capabilities in the technical day-today processes. I have learned to troubleshoot both system behaviour and user behaviour.

I am very thankful to the TEAM that has moulded and supported me through my journey from being a Call Centre Agent to where I am now. I can proudly say that I have achieved an eminence goal of being appointed as the Marketing Services Call Centre Manager.

Meningococcal Meningitis What you need to know What is Meningococcal Meningitis: Meningitis is de ned as an in ammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. It's caused when the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges become infected. The difference between normal meninges and meningitis. It is an infection that is caused by the bacteria meningococci, this is more common in teens and children than in adults.

Routes of infection: Meningitis is spread through body uid exposures such as saliva or blood spills or direct exposure to bloods during procedures i.e. eye splashes, needle sticks.

Symptoms of Meningitis in adults and children: Symptoms will start within 24 hours after exposure      

Sudden onset of high fever Severe Headaches Dislike of bright lights Vomiting Painful joints Fits or drowsiness

Meningitis can be prevented by using the following steps:  

Wearing PPE that is provided to you Take extra caution when drawing blood to prevent needle stick from occurring or while processing samples

What to do when handling a patient with Meningitis Treatment will only be required once a person comes in to direct contact with body uids or saliva, however, we will still require all staff who handled positive meningitis specimen to report incidents. SHEQ and your HOD must be informed telephonically or via email once you are exposed to a positive meningitis patient and the incident noti cation form is to be completed immediately and sent through to SHEQ. Once SHEQ has been noti ed of the exposure, SHEQ will determine if prophylaxis is required or not.

Ludwig Ehrke

Ludwig joined Elab nine years ago and was a valued team member of the ELab Development Department.

One of his major programmatic accomplishments amongst others was the Bank Reconciliation, whereby the Banking Department's work ow was streamlined and this increased their productivity substantially.

Another project that was accorded to him, was the 'Med Claims To Response' (MCTR) system which gives us meaningful reports on Medical Aid claims and rejections.

We wish him the best of luck and prosperity in his future ventures.

The constitutive meeting of the ECOWAS, Regional Accreditation System and Community Committees took place in November 2017.The primary aim for the West Africa Quality System Programme was to strengthen the regional economic integration and trade by creating an environment that facilitates compliance with international trade rules and technical regulations.

Thanks to the recently adopted quality policy of the ECOWAS and its' related infrastructure scheme; the program supports the ECOWAS Commission and the 16 West African Countries in strengthening their quality infrastructure for greater effectiveness.

Mr Doudou presented a pull up banner of the ECOWAS Quality Award of the winning companies
