Module 1: Arts and Crafts of Luzon (Highland and Lowland)

OVERVIEW This school year might be challenging for all of us, but we can help each other in learning even if we are staying home. We will experience Art Class as if we are in the same room together so if you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to ask me anytime. If you encounter some difficulties or problems please talk to Ms. Maine and not talk about Ms. Maine, I know we can make this work. This module will introduce you to the folk arts and designs of Luzon, the largest island of our country. Luzon is the northern most part of the Philippine archipelago that includes the island of Luzon itself, the Batanes and Babuyan groups of island to the north, and the outlying islands of Catanduanes, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan and Mindoro in the south.

Luzon is the economic and political center of the Philippines, being home to the country’s capital city, Manila.

With over 7,600 islands in the Philippines and three major island groups, it’s no wonder that different cultural practices, traditions, and groups are present in the country.

Among the archipelago’s existing communities, there are indigenous tribes who have managed to keep their cultural identity, despite the non-recognition and marginalization they are facing.

ILOCOS REGION

The Ilocanos are among the largest ethnolinguistic groups in the country.

•

• Majority of them are living in La Union, Abra, Isabela and in other parts of the country.

•

• The Ilocanos are highly influenced by Christianity.

The Paoay church and the old houses of Vigan are reminders of the distant past that continue to lull visitors from local and international tourist.

• Their arts and culture are so diverse.

•

They are known for their iloco or inabel fabric. This especial fabric is made from cotton which undergoes the painstaking binatbatan or beating of the cotton balls using bamboo sticks to separate the seeds during the initial stage.

The ilocanos are also known for their centuries – old tradition of burnay pottery. In some other regions, it is known as tapayan or banga.

PANGASINAN   



The third biggest province in the whole Philippine Archipelago.

Derived its name from salt or “asin” in the vernacular.

Owing to the rich and fine salt beds which were the prime source of livelihood for the province’s coastal towns, PangASINan or “Pangasinan” which means, “where salt is made” came to be its name.

Arts and crafts include the smoothy-weaved Bolinao mats made from buri or raffia leaves, bamboo crafts of San Carlos, bagoong, and the tasty tapang bangus.

It is located in the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR).

• It is the home for the Cordilleran (the politically correct term for Igorots).

• Aside from them, there were Tagalogs, Ibalois, Ilocanos, Kankaney, and Ikalahan living in Benguet Its capital is La Trinidad. – Benguet is alson known as the “Salad Bowl of the Philippines” because of its large production of upland vegetables.

Benguet fabrics design refers to pattern, repetition of elements such as lines, colors, shapes or forms.

The people of Kalinga are also great weavers.

Their cloth weaving and basketry are among the finest products in the region. Kalinga textiles are characterized by: • dominant red stripes motifs of geometric patterns Nature symbols interlaced with white, yellow, and black fibers.

Some kalinga people are expert mababatok. (tattoo artist)

IFUGAO    

The term ifugao means “people from the hills” The clothing of the ifugaos is woven from looms.

Ifugao males wear the traditional attire called wanno, a form of loincloth.

The ifugao females wear a wrap-around skirt called tapis.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE   

Its capital is Bontoc.

This Ethno-linguistic group has a long traditional cultural practice of mummification.

Tattoo art is another form of folk arts in mountain province. For them it is a part of clothing. It is considered as part of the decoration of what they are wearing.

Abra is known as the “Natural Dye Capital of the Philippines” It is an island province in the CAR. Bontocs and Ifugao are the original incomers in this place.

The people in abra are known for their greatness in loom weaving.

The people of Abra use natural dye in their loom weaving. They embellish the woven fabric cloth with embroideries in their fabrics.

Loom weaving and embroidery are famous folk arts and crafts in Abra.

KEEP IN MIND • •

The cultural communities in Luzon have attire and body accessories with distinct elements of art that are uniquely their own.

In several communities in Luzon, males wear loincloths while the female wear around skirts. The colors and kind just vary depending on the ethnic group they belong to
