— THE STORY — ACT I: TRIAL BY JURY The trial opens with the court Usher urging the Jury to be free of bias, while also suggesting that the plaintiff deserves their sympathy as the defendant is a ruffian. Edwin, the defendant, shows up at court with his mandolin and pleads that, although he was once in love with Angelina, the plaintiff, she became more and more boring and so he found himself in love with someone else, as is human nature. The Judge appears and explains how he rose to the top by way of a marriage of convenience. Angelina then enters the court in full bridal attire with her bridesmaids in tow and begs for sympathy as she is still in love with Edwin. The men of the court are all enraptured by the ladies, particularly Angelina, and she pleads for substantial damages. Several ineffective, and rather silly, suggestions are rejected until the Judge comes up with a solution that benefits everyone.

— THE STORY — ACT II: TRIAL BY JURY DUTY Trial by Jury Duty is a Lamplighters original, in which we create a purposely ridiculous second act for Trial by Jury. We take you to Montgomery Hall, the country estate of the Learned Judge.

He and Angelina have been married for a month. Edwin returns, and we learn some new things about his relationship with Angelina. The Judge of course has Three Little Wards, and has hired a new governess for them, Jane Eyrehead. You’ll also meet several more new characters, among them Mrs. Danville, the housekeeper; the Rev. Clarence Poltwhistle, the Judge’s cousin; and the mysterious Victoria, the madwoman hiding in the East Wing.

— STAGE DIREC TOR'S NOTES — Gilbert and Sullivan had written only one piece together, the 1871 Christmas entertainment Thespis, when the theatrical manager Richard D’Oyly Carte asked the two men to collaborate on a short piece to be performed along with Offenbach’s La Périchole in the spring of 1875.

Gilbert hit upon the idea of a trial for breach of promise of marriage, in which the jilted bride puts on quite a show and winds up with a very satisfactory judgment. Sullivan found it hilarious and responded with some of his most sparkling music. Trial by Jury was an immediate hit and was revived for several more runs, receiving over 300 performances in its first two years. The part of the Learned Judge was originated by Fred Sullivan, the composer’s brother.

Trial by Jury is a gem — just over half an hour long, delightfully funny and tuneful, and the only through-composed G&S show (no dialogue). Many people consider it the most perfect of all the G&S works. The only thing wrong with it is — what do you do for the rest of the evening?

Audience attention spans are shorter than they were in the 19th century, but 35 minutes is too short to make an evening’s program. The Lamplighters would love to present it more often, but “what else?” is an ongoing problem.

Back in 1997, we came up with a solution — let’s write our own second act! Our Gala writers came up with Trial by Jury Duty, a fantastical imagining of what happens after the Trial. Do the Learned Judge and Angelina live happily ever after? Or was there perhaps more going on during the Trial than meets the eye? What if there was a scam hidden underneath the breach of promise lawsuit? We took a lot of liberties (but only in Act 2, not in Trial itself), and while we harbor no illusions that we created a classic comparable to Trial by Jury, we hope you enjoy the results.

Galas always include plenty of topical references, and some of the jokes from 1997 would fall flat in 2019. The original book was by Mike Dederian, revised for 2019 by Barbara Heroux and Baker Peeples with lots of input from Mike. The 1997 lyricists were J. Geoffrey Colton, Mike Dederian, Judith Dara Epstein, Jane Erwin, Barbara Heroux, Anita Schwaber and Chris Walkey; some of their words have also been edited for this 2019 edition by Barbara, Mike and Baker.

— MEE T THE L A MPL IGHTER S — ARIEL ANDREW (‘16) Laura Norder.

Ariel is delighted to be returning to Lamplighters Music Theatre. Recent/ favorite credits include Filipvyena from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Russian Opera Workshop and Third Lady from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with I.P.A.I. She also recently sung the Mozart/Levin Requiem as the Alto Soloist under the baton of Dr. Mark Sumner.

She has recently graduated from CSU East Bay with her Masters in Vocal Performance. She wants to thank her friends and family for all their love and support!

JEFFREY BEAUDOIN (‘87) Chorus.

Jeff has sung in the chorus of all the G&S operas plus The Merry Widow, La Perichole, Where's Charley? and many Galas. He has also appeared with us as Yvan (Die Fledermaus), Notary (Sorcerer), Max (Gala '94), Dances With Weasels (Gala '96) and as Scynthius in our award-winning Princess Ida in Buxton, England.

TIM BESSIE (‘15) Chorus. Although he thought singing was 'for girls' when he was 13, at 15 Tim nonetheless joined his high school choir, leading to a life-long love of song and singing.

In recent years he has sung with The San Francisco Choral Society and The San Francisco Lyric Chorus.

JENNIFER ASHWORTH (‘01) Angelina. Jennifer found her way into the Lamplighters family when she auditioned for A Little Night Music in 2001. Since then she has performed with Lamplighters in nearly all of the G&S operettas, including many non-G&S operettas and musical theater. When she isn't on stage, she directs the MAD Band, an elementary-school instrumental music program at the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley.

AUDREY CARSTENSEN (‘10) Mrs. Murgatroyd, Chorus. Audrey’s excited to be back with Lamplighters for the 8th time after having so much fun with Pirates! Favorite past non-G&S roles include Mrs. Squires in Music Man and Fruma Sarah in Fiddler. Thanks to Geordan and the kitties for all their love and support.

AMANDA RENEE BAINES (‘12) Bridesmaid, Chorus. Amanda is thrilled to add Trial to her growing list of G&S shows performed. She graduated from San Diego State University with a BM in Professional Studios in 2009. She thanks her family and friends for their continued support and for always cheering her on.

MARIA LUCIA CAYCEDO (Debut) Emma, Chorus, u/s Angelina.

Colombian Soprano Maria has sung with Island City Opera, Opera Birmingham, Phenix Opera, Verismo Opera, Opera Cultura, Lyric Theater of San Jose, and West Bay Opera. Maria’s roles include Bernice (L’Occasione fa il Ladro), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Lucy (The Telephone), Musetta (La Bohème), Frasquita (Carmen), and Belinda (Dido & Aeneas).

STACEY BAUER (‘09) Viola. Stacey has been performing with the Lamplighters since three Mikados ago. She enjoys the creativity and diversity each new cast and band brings to the stage. A native of California, Stacey has played with orchestras throughout the state and works diligently to bring up the next wave of musicians through teaching and coaching young musicians.

KATHLEEN CONNER (‘73) Oboe.

Kathy has performed all of the G&S shows in her 40+ happy years of playing for the Lamplighters. She also performs regularly with the SF Chamber Orchestra, the SF Opera Merola program and other Bay Area groups. A personal goal is to play oboe on all of the recordings in the Lamplighter recording project.

CATHY CUTLER (‘89) Mrs. Cripps, Chorus. Cathy celebrates 30 years with Lamplighters this year, having performed in over 17 productions with the company. Her favorite role was the 5th dancing stringbean from the left in one memorable Gala production number. In her off-stage life, she practices environmental law.

Cathy dedicates this TBJ performance to her Lamplighter dance partner of 30 years, Jeff Beaudoin.

JEFFREY ERICKSON (‘18) Mr. Murgatroyd, Chorus. Jeff is thrilled to be in his second Lamplighters show. Each December he haunts the Dickens Christmas Fair, where he performs as Mr. Pickwick, and sings in Trial by Jury and Her Majesty’s Royal Opera gala. His doctorate in Victorian literature gives him little street cred among the Sweeps.

F. LAWRENCE EWING (‘89) The Learned Judge. Celebrating 30 years with Lamplighters, Lawrence is grateful to have had the opportunity to play many roles with the Company. He is thrilled to be adding The Learned Judge to his roster of “friends” including Jack Point, Bunthorne, Koko/Coco, Lord Chancellor, Sir Joseph Porter, Major General Stanley, and Robin Oakapple. Lawrence serves as Vice President of the Lamplighter Board, and is the Executive Director of Marin Ballet in San Rafael.

GWYNETH DAVIS (‘88) Cello. Gwyneth has played with most of the regional orchestras and opera companies in the Bay Area, and, as a member of the Eloquence String Quartet, provided music for hundreds of weddings in the Napa and Sonoma valleys. She lives in Sebastopol with her partner and Labradoodle.

A former pastry chef, she now enjoys performing on viola da gamba and baroque cello with her early music group, the Alphabet Baroque Club.

JOSEPHA FATH (‘90) Violin I. Josepha is so happy (modified rapture!) to be a violinist with the Lamplighters since the 1990s. She currently performs with the California Symphony, SF Opera’s Merola, and can be seen and heard in many other symphony orchestras in and around the Bay Area. Josepha teaches at both the SF Community Music Center, and the French American International School. She is an avid chamber music player, with both the Fath Chamber Players, and the Liberty Street Trio.

KATIE DENNIS (‘17) French horn. SF Bay Area native. Education: Northwestern, NYU, Manhattan School of Music. Freelance career in NYC from 1985-2015 including 15 Broadway shows; tours with NYC Opera, Barbra Streisand; New York Pops, Opera Orchestra of New York, Mostly Mozart, OKMozart, American Composers Orchestra. Local affiliations: SF Chamber Orchestra, Oakland Symphony, Merola Opera, SHN productions, Lamplighters and Pocket Opera. Teacher and music copyist. Hobbies: natural science, biking, learning. Home: Mill Valley.

PAMELA FAW (‘91) Violin I, Concertmaster. Pamela is Director of Music at St. Hilary Parish where she also teaches music in their elementary school. She is on the faculty at Dominican University. Pamela is a freelance violinist performing throughout the Bay Area.

She has several dogs and two cats named Gilbert and Sullivan.

LAWRENCE DILLON (Debut) Chorus. Having been a lifelong fan of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, Lawrence is thrilled to be performing with Lamplighters. He has previously sung with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus for twelve years. This will be Lawrence’s debut performance with Lamplighters.

ANDREW GREEN (‘11) Chorus. Drew completed his Bachelor of Music in vocal performance at Lawrence Conservatory. Drew has worked with Lamplighters in the past as a sailor in in HMS Pinafore and a pirate in Pirates of Penzance.

KATHERINE FELLER (‘10) Ruth Rowbottom, Chorus. Kat is a San Francisco native with a flair for the musical and theatrical since childhood. Some favorite roles have been Despina (Così fan tutte), Valencienne (The Merry Widow), Adele (Die Fledermaus), and Lady Ella (Patience) in Lamplighters’ 2017 production.

She’s been a Lamplighter since their 2010 Pirates.

PATRICK HAGEN (‘16) Edwin.

Patrick is a lyric tenor originally from Northern New Jersey. He received a Bachelor’s from Penn State, and a Master’s from the SF Conservatory. Patrick has been seen in a multitude of operatic productions, including Menotti’s The Consul (The Magician) Puccini’s La Bohème (Rodolfo) and Tosca (Spoletta), Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Don Basilio), Copland’s The Tender Land (Martin), Britten’s Albert Herring (Albert), and Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Tebaldo).

SONIA GARIAEFF (‘03) Victoria.

Sonia made her Lamplighters debut in 2003 as Iolanthe. Since then, she has performed extensively throughout the Bay Area and United States. Other Lamplighters roles include Little Buttercup, The Duchess of Plaza-Toro, Katisha and the Fairy Queen. Additional career highlights include the role of Nicklausse with Virginia Opera, her Young Artist Apprenticeship with Portland Opera, and her Bay Area professional opera debut as a roller-skating Cherubino with Berkeley Opera. She was a three time Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist.

MARY HARGROVE (‘90) Flute, Piccolo. Mary is principal flute with Nederlander Broadway productions in San Jose as well as the Masterworks and Stanford Chorales. She plays flute and piccolo for Opera San José, Ballet San Jose, and the San Francisco Opera Merola program.

MICHAEL GRAMMER (Debut) Foreman, Mrs. Danville. As the “slightly imbalanced” Mrs. Danville, Michael has finally found a role where “over the top” is a quality to aspire to rather than repress. Michael could not have asked for a warmer welcome from the Lamplighters and hopes this production will lead to many more in the future.

WILLIAM HARVEY (‘95) Cornet.

William has been tootling on the cornet-à-piston with the Lamplighters for two decades. He also serves as Principal Trumpet with both Oakland Symphony and Opera San José, and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. William lives in Oakland with his wife, fellow Lamplighters musician Josepha Fath and their little cat Charlie. Much of his time is enjoyably spent on home renovations.

ABBY GREEN (‘18) Kate, Chorus.

Abby is also a professional flutist with degrees from SFSU and UCD. Abby has G&S in her blood: her grandmother played numerous G&S mezzo roles, her mother has been a violist with the Lamplighters orchestra for many years, and her brother Andrew has performed in several Lamplighters shows. Abby has socks from all of the Lamplighters shows.

BARBARA HEROUX (‘74) Stage Director. In over 40 seasons with the Lamplighters, Barbara has played virtually every role, from appearing in dozens of productions, to writing Galas, to adapting the books of Princess Ida and The Grand Duke, to serving as General Director or Artistic Director for 14 years. She is one of very few people worldwide who have directed all 13 of the G&S comic operas. She is also the Executive Director of Volti, the award-winning professional new-music vocal ensemble.

BRUCE HOARD (‘96) Court Clerk, Chorus. Performances with Lamplighters include Die Fledermaus (Frosch), Utopia Ltd. (Dramaleigh), A Song to Sing, O! (Gilbert), The Sorcerer (J.W. Wells), and many Galas. He has performed solo play readings on the Peninsula for more than 30 years, and has a degree in drama from Carnegie-Mellon University.

LESLIE KATTER (Debut) Bridesmaid, Chorus, u/s Angelina. Leslie is a lyric coloratura soprano from Salem, Oregon, who graduated with an MM in Voice from the SF Conservatory. She made her professional debut as The Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with Waffle Opera.

Leslie received the Encouragement Award from the Washington District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

KATHLEEN JOHANNESSEN (‘77) Bassoon. A Bay Area native, Kathleen is a freelance musician. She received a BA in Music from College of Notre Dame and an MA in Musical Performance from CSU Humboldt. Her interest in Gilbert & Sullivan began when she saw her piano teacher as Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance.

COLIN KETCHAM (‘09) Chorus. Colin is a San Francisco native who grew up participating in the Lamplighters/ SF Conservatory Gilbert & Sullivan Scenes Program, later performing in several Lamplighters productions. Currently Colin is the lead singer and songwriter for Montgomery Station, a local indie rock band, and the lead sound engineer for the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church.

LAURIEN JONES (‘90) Violin II. Laurien has performed with Diablo Ballet, Pocket Opera, Western Opera, Masterworks Chorale, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and California Symphony.

She is a chamber musician and soloist.

VERONIQUE KHERIAN (‘14) Chorus.

Veronique has performed with Cinnabar Theater (Pagliacci), Lamplighters (Candide, Ruddygore, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado), San Francisco Opera (Nixon in China), and in chamber music settings.

When not performing, she maintains a cheese-centric blog Miss Cheesemonger, and runs her portrait photography business. She studies voice with Dr. Julia Nielsen.

KATHRYN JUNEAU (‘87) Viola. Katy received her BM from the SF Conservatory of Music. She enjoys playing with a myriad of music groups in the Bay Area including orchestra, chamber music, music theatre and opera. Katy comes from a family tradition of music and Gilbert & Sullivan. In 2011, the tradition was extended as her daughter played flute for a G&S production in Sacramento, and her son joined the Lamplighters chorus.

CAMILLE LAKE (‘16) Chorus. Camille is thrilled to perform in Trial, her 9th Lamplighters Production. Camille is a mezzo-soprano, a student of San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a lover of musical theater.

STEPHEN KAHN (Debut) Reuben I, Chorus. Since 2017, Stephen has appeared in roles with Bay Area companies Cinnabar Theater (Pagliacci), Teatro Mistral (Il Trovatore), and Verismo Opera (Tosca, Das Rheingold, Pagliacci).

He has studied voice with tenor Jonathan Smucker for the past five years. (More information is available at stevekmusic.us)

JULIA LUDWIG (‘18) Bridesmaid, Chorus. Julia is delighted to be returning to Lamplighters this season! She holds a Bachelor of Music from University of the Pacific in Music Management with an emphasis in voice. JIM MACILVAINE (‘78) Mr. Cripps, Chorus. Jim has proudly performed in all the G&S choruses including Utopia, Limited and The Grand Duke with the Lamplighters. This ‘hobby’ has allowed Jim to travel to Buxton, England to perform (and win) at the G&S Festival, record the company’s first CD at Skywalker Ranch and perform all over the Bay Area.

JENNIFER MITCHELL (‘13) Jane Eyrehead. Jennifer is delighted to return to the Lamplighters’ stage, where she last appeared as Patience (2017). Most recently, Jennifer was the soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang at SF Symphony. Other credits: Sweeney Todd (Johanna), Hillbarn Theatre; The Music Man (Marian) and Oklahoma! (Laurey), Broadway by the Bay; Beach Blanket Babylon (Snow White); Le nozze di Figaro (Barbarina), Opera San José.

DOUGLAS MANDELL (‘05) Seth, Chorus. Douglas appeared with Lamplighters as Francesco in Gondoliers 2018. The long-time tenor section leader at St. Stephen’s, Belvedere has performed in productions ranging from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas to Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti; favorite roles include Macheath (Threepenny Opera), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), and the Governor (Candide).

WILLIAM NEELY (‘78) Clarence Poltwhistle. Bill has sung most of the baritone roles in the G&S repertoire, as well as Falke (Die Fledermaus), Danilo (Merry Widow) and Carl-Magnus (A Little Night Music). He has also performed with many groups around the Bay Area in such roles as Sweeney Todd, Man of La Mancha, Don Giovanni, Voltaire/Pangloss, Scarpia, Count Almaviva, Sharpless, Escamillo, Ford and Malatesta. CHARLES MARTIN (‘97) Usher.

Charles first appeared with the Lamplighters as Pish-Tush in our 1997 Mikado, and has since performed many bass-baritone roles with the company including Private Willis, Arac, Senator Jones, Horseman War, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, Dick Deadeye, the Mikado, the Sergeant of Police, Jigger Craigin, the Pirate King, the Usher.

Charles studies voice with Baker Peeples, moonlights as a software engineer, and enjoys the romance of travel and the occasional extreme athletic event.

LYNN OAKLEY (‘80) Violin I. Lynn performs with Villa String Quartet, Villa Sinfonia and Villa Chamber Orchestra, Marin Oratorio as well as other groups. Lynn teaches violin and viola and she has written two biographies and an Arcadia neighborhood book about San Francisco’s Twin Peaks. She had her first introduction to G&S in the third grade in Heidelberg, Germany. Her dad was stationed there and the high school students put on H.M.S. Pinafore for the younger students. Lynn was hooked from that point on.

BRITTANY MELLERSON (‘15) Lighting Designer. Brittany is an East coast native and a graduate of Point Park University’s Conservatory Program, with a BFA in Theatrical Lighting & Sound design. Recent credits include lighting design for the revival of Roger Grunwald’s The Obligation, the 2018 PlayGround Festival of New Works, The Gondoliers and Pirates of Penzance with Lamplighters, Graveyard Shift with SF Playhouse’s Sandbox Series, the 45th Annual Telluride Film Festival and Seen/By Everyone with Theatre of Yugen.

KURT PATZNER (‘77) Trombone.

Originally from Palm Springs, Kurt has performed with every major orchestra in the Bay Area, is currently a member of the Santa Rosa, Berkeley, and Marin Symphonies, and is on the faculty at The College Preparatory School in Oakland. He has a wife and three sons, all of whom are musicians.

NATHANIEL L. PERGAMIT (‘17) Mr. Gadderby, Chorus. Nathaniel is very excited to perform with Lamplighters again! Nathaniel is a recent graduate of the University of the Pacific and is currently working while applying for a Masters in Musicology.

GRACE POPPLE (‘07) Chorus. Grace sings in the chorus.

NORMAN PECK (‘77) Percussion.

Norman currently holds the Principal Percussion Chair with the Santa Cruz Symphony and West Bay Opera. He plays jazz with a big band every Monday night when he isn’t working, teaches a large class of private students, and provides instrumental contracting services to a variety of clients. In addition, Norman is passionately fond of science fiction, cooking and his cat Alex. In January 2016, he and his wife Lynda celebrated their 34th anniversary.

RICH PRYOR (‘83) Chorus. Rich has been seen in every one of the G&S operettas done by Lamplighters. He also appeared as the Solicitor (Patience) and MacGrave (Czardas Princess).

Although retired as a middle school teacher of orchestra, Rich remains active as a clarinetist, as proprietor of R.L. Pryor Antiques, as a board member of Haviland Collectors International.

ELISABETH REEVES (‘13) Stage Manager. Elisabeth recently performed in A Little Night Music, her first time on the Lamplighters’ stage even though this is not her first Lamplighters production – she is usually behind a curtain on headset. Past Stage Manger credits include: Ruddygore (‘15), Yeomen (‘17), and Gondoliers (‘18). Elisabeth was nominated for a TBA Award for Best Props for Pirates (‘18). When not working with Lamplighters, Elisabeth can be found at TAP Plastics, Dickens Christmas Fair, or the Renaissance Faire.

JACKQUELIN PEDOTA (‘16) Costumer. At SFSU Jackie found her niche in costuming while working on The Seagull, In The Next Room and designing Chicago. She was drawn into the world of Gilbert & Sullivan to join the costume team for The (New) Mikado and looks forward to many future projects with the Lamplighters.

She loves making anyone who will listen laugh so, besides her time in the costume shop, she’s also a comedian, actress and tour guide.

BAKER A. PEEPLES (‘75) Music Director, Conductor. Baker has sung almost all the G&S tenor leads, as well as Eisenstein/Alfred (Fledermaus), Tassilo (Countess Maritza), Paris (La belle Helene), Karl Franz (Student Prince), and the Defendant in our KQED Trial. Baker has conducted almost all Galas since 1986, as well as hundreds of performances of G&S and other operettas and musicals. Baker was voted best male singer in the 1995 and 1997 International G&S Festivals. He maintains an active voice studio in San Francisco.

KERRY RIDER-KUHN (‘13) Wig Designer, Makeup Designer. Kerry does our wigs! She’s doing makeup for this show, too.

ALISON SAWYER (‘15) French horn.

Alison Sawyer is a professional horn player, music teacher and mother.

She has been freelancing on the horn since 2003, and also teaches music with the Berkeley Unified School District. Alison is a 2003 graduate of the SF Conservatory and holds masters degrees from Northwestern and USC. When she is not working she enjoys traveling, 12

working with plants, creating macrame art, being in nature and spending quality time with her husband and four year old daughter.

(A Little Night Music), The Playwright (Enter the Guardsman), and numerous Galas. He has been nominated twice for a Shellie Award and once for an Arty Award.

LUCY SCHOENING (‘74) Flute. Lucy was principal flute for the Artea Chamber Orchestra and performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Pocket Opera, San Francisco Chamber Players, Oakland Opera and many chamber music groups. She teaches fifth grade and is the mother of two sons.

CARL STANLEY (‘73) Bass. Carl performs professionally with orchestras and theater groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He first played bass with the Lamplighters Orchestra in the mid 1970s and served as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Education Coordinator for the Oakland Symphony from 1996 to 2015. He was an instrumental music teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District for many years.

PETE SHOEMAKER (‘14) Reuben II, Chorus. Pete has had a diverse theatrical career that includes leading roles in plays, musicals and ballets. His first show with Lamplighters was The Pirates of Penzance in 2014.

GREGORY SYKES (‘93) Violin II. Gregory has been studying violin and making music in the SF Bay Area since elementary school. He holds a BM from UC Berkeley and has studied privately with Mariko Smiley, Charles Meacham and Elizabeth Gibson. Gregory has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Oakland East Bay, Santa Rosa and Vallejo Symphonies and has played in the pit accompanying musical theater productions for numerous dramatic troupes, most especially the Lamplighters! Thanks for all the memories!

FRANCES SILCOX (‘16) Properties Manager. Easily pulled in to a witty story, what “inestimable treasure” it is for France to take part in G&S stories accompanied by Lamplighters’ voices.

France comes to Lamplighters carrying a love of objects and stories across the bridge from the museum world to Lamplighters. She holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from The George Washington University and a B.A. from her favorite city’s University of San Francisco.

KRISTEN TANSEY (‘15) Gwyneth, Chorus. Kristen’s thrilled to be back on stage with the Lamplighters family! She earned her BM in Vocal Performance from UC Santa Barbara and has performed with Lamplighters for four years.

Past shows range from musicals to operas; favorites include Thoroughly Modern Millie (Miss Dorothy) and Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna).

ALLISON SPENCER (‘14) Bridesmaid, Chorus. Allison received her BM from Sonoma State where she studied under Ruth Ann Swenson.

Other roles include Pippa from The (New) Mikado, Eurydice from Heroines, and Silvia from L’Isola Disabitata. She has also appeared in productions of Riders to the Sea, Pirates of Penzance, and the Gondoliers.

JASON TOTZKE (‘07) Violin I. Jason has performed in solo and chamber music recitals in locally and abroad.

He is a former member of the Rochester Philharmonic and currently resides in San Francisco where he is a faculty member of the Golden Gate Philharmonic Youth Orchestras.

JONATHAN SPENCER (‘90) Production Manager. Jonathan has served as Production Manager for The Bracebridge Dinners at Yosemite since 2012. Onstage he most recently appeared as The Pirate King in last summer’s Pirates.

MICHAEL WIRGLER (‘79) Clarinet.

Michael is retired from Oakland Public Schools where he taught music for more than 30 years. He has recently retired conducting the Golden Gate Park Band, and continues conducting the Alameda Community Band. He joined the Lamplighters Orchestra as clarinetist in 1979, which has been an important part of his life since.

BRIAN WATSON (‘19) Scenic Designer. Brian holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from CSU Sacramento.

During his time at CSUS, Brian started to dive further into technical theatre alongside his studies in acting and singing. He worked as a Scene Shop Assistant where he then discovered his love for scenic design and scenic painting. Now, he is an award-winning Scenic Designer and accomplished Scenic Artist.

Brian is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association.

Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan through productions of their comic operas and of other works of comparable wit, literacy and musical merit. Our company strives to enrich the lives of current and future theatre-goers with productions of the highest artistic quality, and to offer performance opportunities in the unique style of classic music theatre to established and emerging artists alike. Through youth training, programs in schools and community outreach, the Lamplighters aspire to develop young talent and encourage people of all ages to explore the comic appeal and deep musical rewards of this repertoire.

Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category. The hallmarks of a Lamplighters production are lavish costumes and sets, live orchestra, excellent comic acting, and gorgeous unamplified singing that showcases the beauty and purity of the human voice.
