The mission of Lamplighters Music Theatre is to share our enthusiasm and love for the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan through productions of their comic operas and of other works of comparable wit, literacy and musical merit. Our company strives to enrich the lives of current and future theatre-goers with productions of the highest artistic quality, and to offer performance opportunities in the unique style of classic music theatre to established and emerging artists alike. Through youth training, programs in schools and community outreach, the Lamplighters aspire to develop young talent and encourage people of all ages to explore the comic appeal and deep musical rewards of this repertoire.

Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category. The hallmarks of a Lamplighters production are lavish costumes and sets, live orchestra, excellent comic acting, and gorgeous unamplified singing that showcases the beauty and purity of the human voice.

The Story Setting: The village of Ploverleigh, England.

Late 18th Century.

The villagers sing in celebration of a betrothal: Alexis Pointdextre is to marry Aline Sangazure. Everyone hurries off to prepare for a celebration as Mrs. Partlet enters with her tearful daughter, Constance. Poor Constance is sad because she is in unrequited love with the elderly vicar, Dr. Daly, who suddenly appears setting her heart aflutter. Mrs. Partlet asks Dr. Daly point blank if he has ever thought of marrying. He replies that he has, but has waited too long and will remain a bachelor until death. Mrs. Partlet and the tear-stained Constance depart.

Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre and his son Alexis enter and greet Dr. Daly who recites a long and complex blessing and then leaves. Sir Marmaduke congratulates his son on having “caught” Aline: her family is wealthy and ancient.

Alexis is overflowing with joy and happiness and Sir Marmaduke begs him to control himself. Alexis explains that people are far more open about their emotions these days. They leave arguing amicably.

Aline and the village maidens enter and are joined by Lady Sangazure, Sir Marmaduke and Alexis. Aline and Alexis fly into each other’s arms. Their respective father and mother bow very formally, while confessing in asides that they have been madly in love with each other for many years. The notary enters and Alexis and Aline sign the official betrothal agreement.

Left alone, Alexis explains to Aline his theory that all people should marry regardless of rank. He also confides to her that he has invited a sorcerer to the tea being given in their honor. The sorcerer, Mr. Wells, is to bring with him a philtre – a love potion – guaranteed to bring pure and lasting happiness to everyone in the village. Aline expresses alarm at the idea of sorcery in the village.

Mr. Wells enters carrying the Patent Oxy-Hydrogen Love-at-first-sight Philtre and introduces himself. At Alexis’ bidding Aline goes to fetch a large teapot. Mr. Wells tells Alexis that the philtre will take effect only on the unmarried adults who partake of it: they lose consciousness and – upon awakening – will promptly love the first unmarried person of the opposite sex that they see.

Aline returns, and Mr. Wells calls on his spirit accomplices as he pours the potion into the teapot. The villagers enter and proceed to drink the spiked tea supposedly brewed by Dr. Daly. They comment on how very strong the vicar’s brew is as they pass out on the lawn.

Act II opens with the villagers stirring, groggily, from their sleep. They quickly pair off and begin dancing...

Glossary With thanks to The Gilbert & Sullivan Lexicon by Harry Benford, here’s a little help with some of the more obscure Victorian references you’ll hear in The Sorcerer. Mr. Benford’s lexicon is on sale at the Lamplighters store in the lobby along with other fun stuff.

Abjure: Disclaim.

Abudah chests: Abudah was a merchant in a pseudo-Persian fairy tale who encountered an enchanted chest (complete with hag) nightly.

Ahrimanes: In Persian mythology, the personification of evil, somewhat analogous to Satan.

Amatory numbers: Songs pertaining to love.

Approbation: Approval.

Guineas: A monetary unit equal to £1.05 or 21 shillings.

Puffing: “we are not in the habit of puffing our goods”–– Exaggerating the worth.

Jorum: A large portion.

Puling: Whining, whimpering.

KCB: Knight Commander of the Bath - an order of chivalry.

QC: Queen’s Counsel - a title in recognition of eminence in the law.

Knells: “Forget your knells”––The sound of slowly rung funeral bells at funerals or other mournful occasions.

Rector: A Church of England clergyman in charge of ecclesiastical affairs of a parish.

Love’s tillage: Cupid’s work.

Aurora: Dawn, after the Roman goddess of morning.

Lowering: Threatening.

Bail: “I will go bail for the liquor”––I will guarantee the quality of the tea.

Melt a rich uncle in wax: Relates to a medieval superstition that one could effect the death of a person by melting their waxen image.

Baronet: A hereditary title ranking between a knight and a baron.

Méssalliances: French for mismatches.

Brindisi: A toast.

Minx: Flirt, harlot.

Caddy: A box containing canisters of tea.

Mustard and cress: Tender sprouts grown from seeds, served as a garnish or salad.

Colonial Bishopric: A district under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of some overseas bishop.

Cosy: A jacket for keeping the teapot warm.

Curate: Assistant to a rector or vicar in the Church of England.

Dark lantern: A lantern with a sliding shutter to confine the emission of light - a burglar’s trademark.

Djinn: In Arabian mythology, spirits of supernatural powers. Djinn is the plural of djinnee, also spelled jinnee or genie.

Electro-biology: Hypnotism (early practitioners mistakenly believed that electricity was involved).

Reflectors: Mirrors used in stage illusions.

Rosherville: A lower class amusement park.

Sally Lunn: A plain, light tea-cake.

Shoals: Crowds.

Simmery Axe: The authentic Londoner’s pronunciation of St. Mary Axe. Sol: “Ere Sol has sunk...”––Roman god of the sun, although in this case Daly means the sun.

Nativity: An astrological reading.

Sovereign law: A law subject to no overriding laws.

Nosology: Study of diseases.

Take: “Oh, I take you”–– Understand.

One Tree Hill: “I often roll down One Tree Hill”–– A rather seedy and disreputable “pastime” of the times.

Tautology: Needless repetition.

Perfidy: Treachery or breach of faith.

Three spoons to the pot: The normal allotment of tea is one spoonful per person plus “one spoon to the pot.” Three spoons to the pot makes very strong tea.

Pew opener: An impoverished parishioner who was allowed to gather tips by escorting the well-heeled worshipers to their pews.

Philology: Study of language and the origin of words.

Philtre: A love potion.

Fell: “Ye demons, fell”, “magic fell” –– Villainous.

Pipes and hogsheads: Wine containers and barrels.

Flageolet: A small, non-reed wind instrument with six holes.

Plighting: The act of becoming engaged to be married.

Garner: A storehouse.

Posthumous Shade: Ghost.

Three-and-six: Three shillings and sixpence.

Tillage: “peace-bearing tillage”–– Figurative land that is tilled to produce a harvest of love.

Vaunted: Boasted.

Widdy: A corruption of widow.

Wishing caps: In folklore, caps that empower the wearer to make wishes come true.

Wood: “we should strongly advise your taking it in the wood”–– Buying it by the barrel.

Lamplighters

ROBERT TED ANDERSON (’04) Lighting Designer. Rob has worked in the Bay Area for over ten years. Other companies include West Bay Opera, The Willows Theatre, Oakland Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, Berkeley Opera, St. Mary’s College, City of Pleasanton, Tri Valley Rep Company, Ronn Guidi Dance Company, Western Ballet, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Oakland Ballet, Crossroads Theater, Savage Jazz Dance Company, and Lily Cai Dance Company.

MAGNUS ASBO (‘12) Mr. Goddard/Chorus. Magnus comes to the Lamplighters from choirs in the North and East Bay, where he sings music with several medieval and classical ensembles. This is his second performance of anything as modern as Gilbert & Sullivan.

GEORGE ASHWORTH (‘11) Mr. McLeod/Chorus. After filling audiences with dread for an entire scene in his company debut as The Yeomen Of The Guard’s headsman and assisting production for Engaged and Trial By Jury, George exploded back onto the stage as vibrant, water-borne characters such as a sailor in H.M.S. Pinafore and a gondolier in The Gondoliers.

OMID ASSADI (’07) Viola. Omid holds an MM from SF Conservatory of Music where he studied with Jodi Levitz and Bettina Mussumeli. He has concertized with many Bay Area orchestras and has appeared numerous times as a soloist with Golden Gate Philharmonic, City College of SF String Orchestra, Kensington Symphony Orchestra, and Villa Sinfonia. A love for chamber music has led him to study with the Kronos String Quartet and SF Conservatory of Music. He has collaborated with Jennifer Culp, Jodi Levitz, Jorja Fleezanis, and with the Shams Ensemble.

JEFFREY BEAUDOIN (‘87) Mr. McAllister/Hercules. After making his debut in The Pirates of Penzance, Jeff has appeared in all of the G&S operas plus Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, La Périchole, Where’s Charley? and many Galas.

He has also appeared with us as The Notary (The Sorcerer), Lt. Solo (Galas ‘91 & ‘09), Max (Gala ‘94), Dances With Weasels (Gala ‘96) and as Scynthius in our award-winning Princess Ida in England. Jeff was also seen as Giorgio (The Gondoliers) in NYC, Lane (Importance of Being Earnest) in SF and in the ensemble of Mame in Petaluma.

ADAM ARTHUR BIER (’12) Mr. Hill/Chorus. Adam returns to the stage with his third production for the Lamplighters. A Berkeley native, Adam’s major interests include opera (especially the late German romantics), art songs, discovering exciting new things to eat, liberal whisky tasting, and performing arts audience development. His day job involves rather a lot of paper.

KEITH BUCHER (’77) French Horn. Keith was delighted to return to the Lamplighters Orchestra in 2000 after having spent 12 years in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana. He studied at Northwestern University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and started his musical career in the US Marine Band. From 1978 to 1987 he was a fixture in the pit orchestras for major San Francisco musical theatre productions and is currently a freelance musician who performs with organizations from the Bay Area to Sacramento.

JAMES CAMPBELL (‘76) Music Director/ Mr. Clarke/ Conductor. Over the years, Jim has performed numerous functions for the Lamplighters, including producing our last Secret Garden and My Fair Lady. He also conducted our most recent Iolanthe. In the past he has been a rehearsal pianist, assistant conductor to Gil Russak, assistant to the producer, production stage manager, music director and various other tasks as well. He has also worked for the San Francisco Opera, Eugene Opera, Anchorage Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Wildwood Festival for the Performing Arts in Arkansas, as well as ten seasons as production stage manager for the Tacoma Opera. He recently made his debut in non-musical theater as stage manager for the Rogue Theater in Tucson, Arizona.

PAMELA CAREY (’91) Violin I/Concertmaster. Pam is a freelance musician who performs frequently throughout the Bay Area with such groups as The Mountain Play, Contemporary Opera Marin, Woodminster, Cinnabar, and CCMT. She is currently on the faculty at Saint Hilary School and Dominican.

KATHLEEN CONNER (’73) Oboe. Kathleen has performed with Monterey, Santa Rosa, Berkeley and Napa Symphonies and Pocket Opera. She coaches woodwind ensembles at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and is artist-in-residence at School of the Arts. She is on the faculty at both the Capp Street and Richmond branches of the Community Music Center.

GLENN D’MELLO (’12) Mr. Luther/Chorus. Glenn was recently seen as Lt. Munoz in the musical City of Angels at Studio ACT. He has performed improv, salsa for half time shows at Raiders games, and in amateur ballroom competitions. Glenn resides in San Francisco and has an engineering degree.

NICHOLAS DAHLMAN (’12) Properties Manager/Mr. Pratt.

Before moving to the Bay Area, Nicholas performed in many Gilbert & Sullivan productions with the Valley Light Opera of Amherst, MA, as well as an array of plays ranging from Shakespeare to Stoppard. He now works as a systems engineer for Netblaze Systems in Walnut Creek.

GWYNETH DAVIS (’88) Cello. Gwyneth lives in Sebastopol with her partner and an ever-changing cast of animals. She has played with most of the regional orchestras in the Bay Area. As a member of the Eloquence String Quartet she has provided wedding music for hundreds of couples, mostly in the Napa and Sonoma wine country. She also enjoys performing with the VOT early music ensemble on baroque cello and viola da gamba.

During the day she works as a professional pastry chef. An incorrigible Anglophile, she seizes any opportunity to travel to England.

PETER DE VRIES (’97) Mr. Templeton/Chorus. Peter is surprised to discover that he has sung in six Lamplighter operettas: The Yeomen of the Guard (’97), Ruddygore (’00), The Mikado (’08), Patience (’10), Trial by Jury (’11) and the fabulous Princess Ida (’13). His favorite roles of all, however, remain playing husband to his beloved Shelly and father to

for John Adams in 1776, all with the Willows Theatre, as well as the 2010 Arty Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama (Dodge in Buried Child, with Bay Area Stage). He has appeared with Shotgun Players, Ross Valley Players, 42nd Street Moon, West Bay Opera, Pocket Opera, Berkeley Contemporary Opera, Peninsula Civic Light Opera, Piedmont Light Opera Theater, Hayward Little Theater, Palo Alto Players, and in the Bracebridge Dinner at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite.

Roles include both Scrooge and Marley (A Christmas Carol), Ben (The Secret Garden), Rev. Gardner (Mrs. Warren’s Profession), Alfieri (A View from the Bridge), Bauer (Pardon My English), Og (Finian’s Rainbow), Mr. Lundy (Brigadoon), Magwitch (Great Expectations), Dr. Bartolo (Barber of Seville), the Sacristan (Tosca), Fagin (Oliver), and both the Baron and Madame Quimper-Keradec (Vie Parisienne). The Lamplighters welcomed Rick as Artistic Director on March 1, 2013.

MICHAEL WIRGLER (’79) Clarinet. Michael is a composer and an arranger, as well as conductor of the Golden Gate Park Band. He received his masters from SFSU, and is currently a music teacher with the Oakland public schools. He has two cats, loves bowling, and has two dreams: to bowl a 300 game, and to conduct an orchestra.

DANIEL WOOD (’07) French Horn. Daniel graduated from UCLA in music, founded the horn quartet QUADRE in 1998 and has performed over 700 concerts with them throughout the US. He recorded, composed and produced 3 albums with the group, has lectured on the “Business of

Early

Music” at numerous conferences and institutions and was one of the participants in the US Classical Music Leadership Think Tank of 2005 and 2007. Daniel is a current faculty member at the Community School of Music and Arts and SF Conservatory, prep division.

MELISSA WORTMAN (’80) Costume Design. In addition to designing over thirty shows for the Lamplighters, Melissa has also designed costumes for American Conservatory Theater, Circus Circus Hotels, KITKA, Abydos Theater, Dance Through Time, Marin Ballet, and numerous private clients. She is the resident costume designer for Bracebridge Dinner Theater created by Ansel Adams, and held annually in the historic Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Melissa is the recipient of five Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominations, two BATCC awards, and two Drama Logue Awards. When not designing costumes, Melissa works as our Costume Shop Manager, has lectured at the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising, consulted for the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa, designed the nationally featured PJ for Karen Neuberger’s Pajama Walks for Breast Cancer Cure, and worked in costume construction for Lucasfilm’s Return of the Jedi, Frank Zappa, Oakland Ballet, CMC and Designs, Festival Opera, SF Miniature Theater, Woodminster Summer Theater, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, I Magnin’s Holiday windows, Gumps Holiday windows, and Beach Blanket Babylon.

CARL STANLEY (’74) Bass. Carl performs professionally with orchestras and theater groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He first played bass with the Lamplighter’s Orchestra in the mid 1970’s. He currently serves as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Education Coordinator for the Oakland East Bay Symphony. He was an instrumental music teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District for many years.

MEGAN STETSON (Debut) Miss Crawley/Lady Sangazure.

Mezzo-soprano Megan is an active performer in the Bay Area, singing and dancing with various local opera companies including Opera San Jose, Ensemble Parallèle and Berkeley West Edge. Some of her professional credits include the title role in Carmen; Princess Betsy in Carlson’s Anna Karenina; Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro; Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and Hélène in La belle Hélène. Megan also both choreographed and performed lead roles in La Vie Parisienne and La Traviata with Pocket Opera.

ROBERT VANN (’10) Mr. de Bracy/Alexis. Robert is honored to be returning again to the Lamplighters where he was last seen as Hilarion in Princess Ida. Other Lamplighters performances include Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, Marco in The Gondoliers and Colonel Fairfax in The Yeomen of the Guard. Recent performances include Pollione in Norma with Pocket Opera and the tenor soloist in Sacramento Ballet’s Carmina Burana. Other Gilbert & Sullivan roles include Tololler in Iolanthe, Edwin in Trial by Jury, Richard Dauntless in Ruddygore, and Luiz in The Gondoliers (with Light Opera Theatre, Sacramento). Favorite non-Savoy roles include Alfredo in La Traviata, Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He resides in Sacramento with his wife, soprano Carley Neill.

GREGORY SYKES (’93) Violin. Gregory has been studying violin and making music in the Bay Area since elementary school. He holds a Bachelor’s in Music from UC Berkeley and studied privately with Mariko Smiley, Charles Meacham and Elizabeth Gibson. He has also studied voice with Erin Neff. Gregory has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Oakland East Bay, Santa Rosa and Vallejo Symphonies and has played in the pit accompanying musical theater productions for numerous dramatic troupes, most especially the Lamplighters! Thanks for all the memories!

GRAHAM TAYLOR (’12) Cornet. Graham grew up in Irvine, where he began studying with Bill Perkins at the age of 11. By 14, he was studying with David Washburn, principal trumpet of LA Opera and Chamber Orchestra. He received a Master of Music degree from the SF Conservatory of Music. Graham recently joined the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, performed the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto with the Eureka Symphony, and became a member of the Pageant of the Masters orchestra in Laguna Beach. He and his wife Alison reside in Berkeley.

LINDSAY THOMPSON ROUSH (’11) Miss Stillman/ Aline. Lindsay, originally from San Jose, California, is a lyric-coloratura soprano, who debuted with the Lamplighters as Josephine in HMS Pinafore, returning last summer to perform as Yum-Yum in The Mikado.

She graduated in 2010 from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she received both her BM and MM degrees in Vocal Performance on a fullmerit scholarship. Lindsay performed four opera roles while at Peabody, including Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, and Adele in Die Fledermaus. She could not possibly be more thrilled to be returning to Lamplighters!

CARMELLO TRINGALI (‘12) Mr. Mouillon/Chorus.

This is Carmello’s fourth full production with the Lamplighters. He was in the choruses of Princess Ida, The Gondoliers and The Mikado. He also participated with the Lamplighters in last year’s Gala and Hidden Treasures, and last October performed his first lead role as Camille in The Merry Widow with Lyric Theatre of San Jose. He hopes you will be seeing more of him soon.

SARAH VARDIGANS (’06) Managing Director. For 27 years Sarah worked as Company and Touring Manager for numerous performing artists from all over the world, including Luciano Pavarotti, Boston Ballet and Rudolf Nureyev, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Moscow Circus, Astor Piazzolla, and 10 years with San Francisco Ballet. She has also managed international touring Broadway productions of A Chorus Line, Evita, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, and The American Dance Machine. She currently moonlights as Stage Manager for the Music at Kohl Mansion Chamber Music series and for the New Century Chamber Orchestra.

MAAYAN VOSS DE BETTANCOURT (‘12) Miss Everdeen/ Chorus. Maayan fell in love with opera at twelve and has pursued it ever since. She recently graduated from The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State, Long Beach with a BM in Performance and a minor in Theatre Arts. Since that time she has been feeding herself a steady diet of private lessons with Sally Munro and productions, the most recent of which was Twelfth Night at the Phoenix Theater, where she was the understudy to Olivia and played Valentine, First Officer, and Second Officer.

RICK WILLIAMS (’78) Artistic Director. Rick has performed every G&S patter role with the Lamplighters, often multiple times. He won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 1986 for Ko-Ko (The Mikado) and appeared as King Gama in our award-winning Princess Ida. He performed Higgins (twice) in My Fair Lady and was Fredrik in A Little Night Music, for each of which he was nominated for Critics Circle Awards. Other roles with the Lamplighters include Dick Deadeye (HMS Pinafore), both Baron Zeta and Njegus (The Merry Widow), Pangloss (Candide), Andy (Show Boat), Frosch (Die Fledermaus), Horace (Hello, Dolly!), Spettigue (Where’s Charley?), Lutz and Toni (Student Prince) and George Grossmith in Gilbert & Sullivan à la Carte. Rick is the winner of three other BATCC Awards for Best Actor in a Musical, for the title role of Man of La Mancha and twice

his equally dear Sophia; two people who put up with him despite his extreme addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan. Family is so great!

DIANA DORMAN (‘72) Clarinet/Music Librarian/ Contractor. Since joining us for our first Ernest in Love, Diana has played principal clarinet in all our productions. She also performs with Berkeley Symphony and Pocket Opera, has performed with SF Opera, including the video recording of R Strauss’ Capriccio for London/Decca and has performed and toured nationally with Western Opera Theater since 1989. As librarian Diana restored the Broadway orchestra parts for our 2008 production of The Secret Garden. She is on the faculty of Dominican University.

ROBERT DORSETT (’95) Mr. Tanner/Chorus. A third generation San Francisco performer, Robert has appeared with Berkeley Opera, Diablo Light Opera, Donald Pippin’s Pocket Opera, Altarena Playhouse, Stanford Savoyards and, of course, the Lamplighters.

Roles: Major Shelley, The Secret Garden; David, Company, Major Murgatroyd, Patience; Doctor, Of Thee I Sing and General Lord Glossop, Jekyll and Hyde.

LAURA EHRLICH (‘03) Miss Terry/Chorus. Laura has been a devoted fan of Gilbert & Sullivan and the Lamplighters since childhood, and is always delighted to perform with the Lamplighters, most recently in The Yeomen of the Guard and the 2011 Gala. When not singing choruses in public, she works as an ER nurse.

KATHERINE FELLER (’10) Miss Blakely/Chorus. “Kat” is delighted to be taking part in her sixth Lamplighters production. A 25-year-old alumna of CSU Chico, she begins post-college life by returning to her hometown, San Francisco. She has performed roles such as Adele (Die Fledermaus) and Valencienne (The Merry Widow). She is also an affirmed chocoholic.

ROSE FRAZIER (’06) Miss Richards/Constance.

Since first joining the Lamplighters for The Pirates of Penzance, Rose has participated in twenty-five Lamplighters productions, including ten Gilbert & Sullivan operettas (with only one repeat), three classic musicals, five annual Champagne Galas, one straight play by W.S. Gilbert, two G&S Sing-Alongs, and three Hidden Treasures fundraisers. In May of 2012 Rose completed her undergraduate degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and while she eagerly anticipates moving away this fall to continue her education, she will miss her Lamplighters “family,” and is sure to return home to them someday soon.

TINA-MARIA GARCIA (‘05) Miss Pratt/Chorus. Tina enjoys performing with local Musical Theater and Opera companies, in addition to running a thriving voice studio in the east bay. A Bay Area native, she received her Masters in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Recent roles include Jenny Lind (Barnum), Mamma Maddalena (Nine), and Marian (The Music Man). Tina is thrilled to return for her fourth Lamplighters show.

JOSEPH GIAMMARCO (‘05) Supertitles Manager. Joe has performed numerous supernumerary roles with San Francisco Opera and Houston Grand Opera over the past 17 years. His Lamplighters debut was as the Headsman in the 2005 production of The Yeomen of the Guard, in which his wife, Claire Kelm played Elsie Maynard.

Joe often works behind the scenes in Lamplighters productions, assisting backstage or running supertitles.

SHARON GOSSELINK (‘12) Development Assistant.

Sharon is one of the newest additions to the Lamplighter family. She’s an undergrad at SFSU, studying Biochemistry. In her spare time, she enjoys playing music, sewing, painting pewter miniatures, and anything related to cheesy fantasy.

ANDREW GUSTAFSON (’10) Mr. Walden/Chorus. Andrew knew he was destined for stardom when he premiered as Augustus on the Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp award winning show, Charlie and the Golden Ticket. Sadly, the show never made it out of the woods, or more accurately, Stanislaus National Forest. After a short period of mourning, and gorging himself on chicken sandwiches from Bakesale Betty’s (the secret’s in the coleslaw, folks), he pounced back on stage as a pirate, and a cop in The Pirates of Penzance. Love to Brenna and my family.

JANE ERWIN HAMMETT (’83) Stage Director. Jane was last seen on our stage as Sari in Noel Coward’s Bitter Sweet.

She is thrilled to direct The Sorcerer for the first time. Other recent Lamplighters directorial assignments: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Patience, Iolanthe, Ruddygore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Gondoliers, The Secret Garden and several Galas, including You Can’t Bite City Hall. Other credits include The Marriage of Figaro, Orpheus in the Underworld and Roberto Devereux for Pocket Opera, plus Pirates, The Elixir of Love and The Daughter of the Regiment for the SF Opera Guild’s Education Outreach program. Since her Lamplighters debut as Mabel, Jane has sung nearly every comic heroine in the G&S canon, many other leads on our stage, plus numerous roles for West Bay Opera and Pocket Opera. For nearly four years she performed across the US with two national companies of The Phantom of the Opera (directed by Harold Prince). Her performances have been recognized with two Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle Awards and a Drama-Logue Award for her Rose Maybud (Ruddygore), Vampira (The Phantom of the Operetta), and Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady). She teaches voice privately and at Sonoma State Univerity.

MARY HARGROVE (‘90) Flute/Piccolo. Mary is principal flute with Cadenza Chamber Orchestra, St. Peters Chamber Orchestra and Nederlander Broadway productions in San Jose. She plays flute and piccolo for Opera San Jose, Ballet San Jose, and the San Francisco Opera Merola program, as well as freelancing with Santa Cruz Symphony and many other Bay Area orchestras.

AMY HIMES (‘12) Development Director. Amy is a Certified Fundraising Executive who has provided leadership and support to cultural organizations for over a decade. She is a singer and theatrical director, and holds a BA and MA in Theatre Arts from Florida State and San Jose State Universities, respectively. She lives in San Jose and enjoys taking the train to work.

KATHLEEN JOHANNESSEN (’77) Bassoon. A Bay Area native, Kathleen is a freelance musician. She received a BA in Music from College of Notre Dame and an MA in Musical Performance from CSU Humboldt. Her interest in Gilbert & Sullivan began when she saw her piano teacher as Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance.

KRISTEN JONES (’03) Miss Little/Chorus. Kristen is delighted to be a part of this rarely done production. She has performed with the Lamplighters since 2003, as well as with other companies around the Bay Area. Kristen is a teaching artist that performs and presents at schools throughout the Bay Area, and is co-founder of Presto! Interactive Opera. She is currently a teaching artist for the San Francisco Opera Guild and New Conservatory Theater, and is the soloist at the Ninth Church of Christ Scientist, San Francisco.

LAURIEN JONES (‘90) Violin II. Laurien has performed with Diablo Ballet, Pocket Opera, Western Opera, Masterworks Chorale, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and California Symphony. She is a chamber musician and soloist.

EMILY JORDAN (’09) Dialect Coach. Emily is delighted to be working with The Lamplighters for the third time. She has previously worked as a dialect coach with Sierra Repertory Theatre, Shotgun Players, Thrillpeddlers, and Palo Alto Players and teaches regularly for San Francisco Shakespeare Festival and TheatreWorks. As an actress Emily has performed with San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Repertory Theatre, Killing My Lobster, Aurora, TheatreFirst, and Woman’s Will, and as a voice actor she can be heard on numerous videogames as a host of evil villains, vampires and baddies.

KATY JUNEAU (’87) Viola. Katy received her BM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She enjoys playing with a myriad of music groups in the Bay Area including orchestra, chamber music, music theatre and opera. Katy comes from a family tradition of music and Gilbert & Sullivan. In 2011, the tradition was extended as her daughter played flute for a G&S production in Sacramento, and her son joined the Lamplighter’s chorus.

JOANNE KAY (’07) Operations Manager/Miss Wigginbottom. Joanne earned degrees at Glasgow and Paisley Universities in Scotland. When not doing something for the Lamplighters she enjoys “making stuff”, biking, hiking, yoga and anything to do with music. She also moonlights as a freelance graphic designer and as costume assistant for Bracebridge Dinner Theatre in Yosemite. Don’t blink or you’ll miss her stage “debut”. Oh. Too late!

SUSANNA KETRON (’12) Mrs. Brewer/Chorus. Susanna, an NYC native, most recently sang in her hometown with Dell’Arte Opera and One World Symphony. She’s delighted to rejoin this phenomenal Lamplighters cast for her second show in San Francisco.

DAVID KIRBY (‘98) Makeup/Mr. Hereford. David paints faces for several theatre and opera companies in the Bay Area. He also finally admits that he’s a tenor, but is under treatment for it. During the day, he sells whoopee cushions.

WILLIAM LONEY (‘09) Mr. Dutton/Chorus. Some of William’s favorite Lamplighters moments include singing in the cockney quartet of My Fair Lady and playing NankiPoo in the ‘09 Gala. Other favorite roles include Noah Claypoole in Oliver (Theatreworks), Shawn Keogh in The Playboy of the Western World (San Francisco Cabaret Opera), and Captain James T. Kirk in Amok Time (Goathall). As a dancer, he has performed locally with the Bay Area Repertory Dance Company and abroad with the Barcelona based dance company Atalanta Fugiens.

PHIL LOWERY (’94) Production/Stage Manager. Phil was a reputable character until he fell in with the wrong crowd and started directing theatre, opera and operetta. Phil holds a BA with Honors in Music & Theatre from Lewis & Clark College, and an MA in Dramatic Art from UC Berkeley. In 1991 he co-founded Berkeley Contemporary Opera and served as its Artistic Director for three years. He has since directed for Berkeley Opera, Pocket Opera, North Bay Opera, Altarena Playhouse, Dreamweavers and the Drama Mamas. For the Lamplighters, Phil directed The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, La Perichole, A Little Night Music and Candide, and has been a proud member of the chorus in a half-dozen G&S shows and galas. Phil lives happily in Oakland with his beloved Kelcey and their four beloved cats.

NORMAN PECK (’77) Percussion. Along with playing for the Lamplighters, Norman currently holds the Principal Percussion Chair with the Santa Cruz County Symphony and West Bay Opera. He plays jazz with a big band every Tuesday night when he isn’t working, teaches a large class of private students, and provides instrumental contracting services to a variety of clients. When he’s not working, Norman is passionately fond of science fiction, cooking and his cats Alex and Kesa. In January 2013, he and his wife Lynda celebrated their 31st Anniversary.

KURT PATZNER (’77) Trombone. Originally from Palm Springs, Kurt has performed with every major orchestra in the Bay Area, is currently a member of the Santa Rosa, Berkeley, and Marin Symphonies, and is on the faculty at The College Preparatory School in Oakland. He has a wife and three sons, all of whom are musicians.

JIM MACILVAINE (‘78) Mr. Byler/Notary. Jim has proudly performed in all the G&S choruses including Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke with the Lamplighters.

He has also been seen as the Carpenter’s Mate in HMS Pinafore and Scynthius in Princess Ida. Other Lamplighter performances include countless Galas, Candide and Show Boat. Over the past 30 years with the Lamplighters, this ‘hobby’ has allowed Jim to travel to Buxton, England to perform (and win) at the G&S Festival, record the company’s CD at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, perform all over the Bay Area, meet and marry his wife Judy and raise two tremendously talented daughters around the company. During the day, he plays the part of Special Events Coordinator for the City of Oakland.

BAKER A. PEEPLES (’75) Mr. Lace/Dr. Daly. Baker has sung almost all the Gilbert & Sullivan tenor leads, as well as Eisenstein/Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Tassilo (Countess Maritza), Paris (La belle Hélène), Karl Franz (The Student Prince), and the Defendant in our KQED Trial by Jury.

Baker has conducted every Gala since 1986, as well as hundreds of performances of G&S and other operettas and musicals. He sang onstage with SF Ballet in Balanchine’s Liebeslieder Walzer. A favorite of Pocket Opera audiences, he has also appeared with numerous other Bay Area opera companies, symphonies, ballets, and choral groups. Baker was voted best male singer in the 1995 and 1997 International G&S Festivals for his portrayals of Hilarion (Princess Ida) and Alexis (The Sorcerer). Baker and his wife Ellen Kerrigan oversee the SF Opera Guild’s Opera à la Carte program, which takes live opera to 130 Bay Area schools. He is music director for the Lamplighters/SF Conservatory G&S scenes program, and maintains an active voice studio in San Francisco.

LIZZIE MOSS (‘12) Miss Connelly/Chorus. This is Lizzie’s fourth time on the Lamplighters stage, having most recently been seen as Sacharissa in Princess Ida. Lizzie made her Lamplighters debut as chorus and dance captain in The Gondoliers and also appeared in the 60th Anniversary Gala. Lizzie is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy where she studied at both the Hollywood and New York City campuses.

KELCEY JAY POE (’01) Mrs. Hope. Kelcey is thrilled to be back with the Lamplighters for The Sorcerer! She has recently been seen performing in West Edge Opera’s West Coast Premier of Daron Hagen’s Vera of Las Vegas, as well as choreographing Jan Brown’s production of Little Women, the Musical at Masquers Playhouse. Kelcey thanks her wonderful husband, Phil Lowery, for getting her into all this, as well as our four cats for letting her use them for stress-relief!

LYNN OAKLEY (’80) Violin I. Lynn was a 20-year member of the Marin Symphony, and continues to play throughout the Bay Area with Villa String Quartet and various music organizations. She and her husband Roy are founders of the Villa Sinfonia Foundation, which presented the Governor’s Award at the 2001 Grammy Awards and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2002.

KELLY POWERS (’01) Miss Ransbottom/Mrs. Partlet.

Kelly spent many contented years with UC Berkeley’s Alumni Chorus before discovering she could walk and sing at the same time, and now may be spotted on stage regularly with local opera and musical theater companies. With the Lamplighters she has performed chorus or compramario roles in nearly all of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, and has also enjoyed featured roles in their productions of The Merry Widow (Sylviane) and My Fair Lady (Mrs. Pearce). The annual Lamplighter Gala is her favorite thing ever, wherein she has been privileged to impersonate many zany characters, including “Annie Oakley,” and “Buffy the Vampire Lawyer.” Kelly currently studies voice with Pamela Hicks.

YASUSHI OGURA (’09) Violin. Yasushi is concertmaster of Napa Valley Symphony and Pocket Opera. He often performs for Broadway shows in San Francisco, acts as guest concertmaster with various regional orchestras and was concertmaster/soloist with Diablo Ballet. He is frequently called to record film soundtracks at Skywalker Studios and other re-

HALLIE RANDEL (’12) Miss Stanton/Chorus. Hallie is happy to be back with the Lamplighters after performing in the Summer 2012 production of The Mikado. She is an alumna of San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Summer Music West, SongFest’s Young Artist Program and the Berkeley-based Pacific Mozart Ensemble.

CAITLYN RILEY (Debut) Miss Barrie/Chorus. Caitlyn is a working college student in San Francisco. She has spent the last five years teaching voice at the Crocker House Creative Arts Center and recently moved to the Bay Area to further her education in music. This is her first show with the Lamplighters.

A.C. ROBERTS (‘12) Mr. Mosely. Alan has performed with multiple theatre troupes in productions of The Threepenny Opera, Die Fledermaus, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Les Mamelles de Tirésias, and The Mikado, to name a few. He is delighted to participate in another Lamplighters Music Theatre production.

KATHY ROSNER-GALITZ (Debut) Miss Redding/Chorus.

Kathy is delighted to sing with the Lamplighters. Prior to her move the Bay Area, she performed 8 seasons with Sacramento Opera as well as numerous other choirs there and in her “hometown”, Los Angeles. She runs a commercial/corporate lending operation for Bank of the West in San Jose.

DARYL SCHILLING (’71) Violin I. Daryl was in the original Lamplighters orchestra and enjoys playing for the troupe tremendously. She freelances in the Bay Area and plays with the Midsummer Mozart Festival and the Merola program at the San Francisco Opera Center. She has an active private violin studio and plays with and goes on European tours with the Villa Sinfonia Orchestra.

LUCY SCHOENING (’74) Flute. Lucy was principal flute for the San Francisco’s Artea Chamber Orchestra and performed with San Francisco Symphony and Pocket Opera. She teaches fifth grade and is the mother of two sons.

ROBBY STAFFORD (’09) Mr. Garrison/Sir Marmaduke.

Robert sang his first operatic lead role at age 12 in Amahl and the Night Visitors. After studying music synthesis, music production, and jazz piano at the Berklee College of Music, he received his Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Vocal Performance. Returning to California, he sang leading bass-baritone roles at Opera San José, West Bay Opera, Pocket Opera, Pacific Repertory Opera and the SF Conservatory of Music, where he completed his Master of Music. A love of 18th Century music has since led him to sing concert solos with some of the country’s leading Baroque orchestras, including American Bach Soloists, Apollo’s Fire, Musica Angelica, and the Magnificat Baroque Ensemble. In 2009, Robby directed and sang in a rare performance of Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame at Notre Dame des Victoires in San Francisco with his Medieval vocal ensemble Hocket. Other recent engagements have included the title role in Don Pasquale with Sonoma City Opera, Jupiter in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux with L’Opéra Français de New York, and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro with Livermore Valley Opera.

KATHLEEN JOHANNESSEN (’77) Bassoon. A Bay Area native, Kathleen is a freelance musician. She received a BA in Music from College of Notre Dame and an MA in Musical Performance from CSU Humboldt. Her interest in Gilbert & Sullivan began when she saw her piano teacher as Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance.

KRISTEN JONES (’03) Miss Little/Chorus. Kristen is delighted to be a part of this rarely done production. She has performed with the Lamplighters since 2003, as well as with other companies around the Bay Area. Kristen is a teaching artist that performs and presents at schools throughout the Bay Area, and is co-founder of Presto! Interactive Opera. She is currently a teaching artist for the San Francisco Opera Guild and New Conservatory Theater, and is the soloist at the Ninth Church of Christ Scientist, San Francisco.

LAURIEN JONES (‘90) Violin II. Laurien has performed with Diablo Ballet, Pocket Opera, Western Opera, Masterworks Chorale, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and California Symphony. She is a chamber musician and soloist.

EMILY JORDAN (’09) Dialect Coach. Emily is delighted to be working with The Lamplighters for the third time. She has previously worked as a dialect coach with Sierra Repertory Theatre, Shotgun Players, Thrillpeddlers, and Palo Alto Players and teaches regularly for San Francisco Shakespeare Festival and TheatreWorks. As an actress Emily has performed with San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Repertory Theatre, Killing My Lobster, Aurora, TheatreFirst, and Woman’s Will, and as a voice actor she can be heard on numerous videogames as a host of evil villains, vampires and baddies.

KATY JUNEAU (’87) Viola. Katy received her BM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She enjoys playing with a myriad of music groups in the Bay Area including orchestra, chamber music, music theatre and opera. Katy comes from a family tradition of music and Gilbert & Sullivan. In 2011, the tradition was extended as her daughter played flute for a G&S production in Sacramento, and her son joined the Lamplighter’s chorus.

JOANNE KAY (’07) Operations Manager/Miss Wigginbottom. Joanne earned degrees at Glasgow and Paisley Universities in Scotland. When not doing something for the Lamplighters she enjoys “making stuff”, biking, hiking, yoga and anything to do with music. She also moonlights as a freelance graphic designer and as costume assistant for Bracebridge Dinner Theatre in Yosemite. Don’t blink or you’ll miss her stage “debut”. Oh. Too late!

SUSANNA KETRON (’12) Mrs. Brewer/Chorus. Susanna, an NYC native, most recently sang in her hometown with Dell’Arte Opera and One World Symphony. She’s delighted to rejoin this phenomenal Lamplighters cast for her second show in San Francisco.

DAVID KIRBY (‘98) Makeup/Mr. Hereford. David paints faces for several theatre and opera companies in the Bay Area. He also finally admits that he’s a tenor, but is under treatment for it. During the day, he sells whoopee cushions.

WILLIAM LONEY (‘09) Mr. Dutton/Chorus. Some of William’s favorite Lamplighters moments include singing in the cockney quartet of My Fair Lady and playing NankiPoo in the ‘09 Gala. Other favorite roles include Noah Claypoole in Oliver (Theatreworks), Shawn Keogh in The Playboy of the Western World (San Francisco Cabaret Opera), and Captain James T. Kirk in Amok Time (Goathall). As a dancer, he has performed locally with the Bay Area Repertory Dance Company and abroad with the Barcelona based dance company Atalanta Fugiens.

PHIL LOWERY (’94) Production/Stage Manager. Phil was a reputable character until he fell in with the wrong crowd and started directing theatre, opera and operetta. Phil holds a BA with Honors in Music & Theatre from Lewis & Clark College, and an MA in Dramatic Art from UC Berkeley. In 1991 he co-founded Berkeley Contemporary Opera and served as its Artistic Director for three years. He has since directed for Berkeley Opera, Pocket Opera, North Bay Opera, Altarena Playhouse, Dreamweavers and the Drama Mamas. For the Lamplighters, Phil directed The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, La Perichole, A Little Night Music and Candide, and has been a proud member of the chorus in a half-dozen G&S shows and galas. Phil lives happily in Oakland with his beloved Kelcey and their four beloved cats.

NORMAN PECK (’77) Percussion. Along with playing for the Lamplighters, Norman currently holds the Principal Percussion Chair with the Santa Cruz County Symphony and West Bay Opera. He plays jazz with a big band every Tuesday night when he isn’t working, teaches a large class of private students, and provides instrumental contracting services to a variety of clients. When he’s not working, Norman is passionately fond of science fiction, cooking and his cats Alex and Kesa. In January 2013, he and his wife Lynda celebrated their 31st Anniversary.

KURT PATZNER (’77) Trombone. Originally from Palm Springs, Kurt has performed with every major orchestra in the Bay Area, is currently a member of the Santa Rosa, Berkeley, and Marin Symphonies, and is on the faculty at The College Preparatory School in Oakland. He has a wife and three sons, all of whom are musicians.

JIM MACILVAINE (‘78) Mr. Byler/Notary. Jim has proudly performed in all the G&S choruses including Utopia Limited and The Grand Duke with the Lamplighters.

He has also been seen as the Carpenter’s Mate in HMS Pinafore and Scynthius in Princess Ida. Other Lamplighter performances include countless Galas, Candide and Show Boat. Over the past 30 years with the Lamplighters, this ‘hobby’ has allowed Jim to travel to Buxton, England to perform (and win) at the G&S Festival, record the company’s CD at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, perform all over the Bay Area, meet and marry his wife Judy and raise two tremendously talented daughters around the company. During the day, he plays the part of Special Events Coordinator for the City of Oakland.

BAKER A. PEEPLES (’75) Mr. Lace/Dr. Daly. Baker has sung almost all the Gilbert & Sullivan tenor leads, as well as Eisenstein/Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Tassilo (Countess Maritza), Paris (La belle Hélène), Karl Franz (The Student Prince), and the Defendant in our KQED Trial by Jury.

Baker has conducted every Gala since 1986, as well as hundreds of performances of G&S and other operettas and musicals. He sang onstage with SF Ballet in Balanchine’s Liebeslieder Walzer. A favorite of Pocket Opera audiences, he has also appeared with numerous other Bay Area opera companies, symphonies, ballets, and choral groups. Baker was voted best male singer in the 1995 and 1997 International G&S Festivals for his portrayals of Hilarion (Princess Ida) and Alexis (The Sorcerer). Baker and his wife Ellen Kerrigan oversee the SF Opera Guild’s Opera à la Carte program, which takes live opera to 130 Bay Area schools. He is music director for the Lamplighters/SF Conservatory G&S scenes program, and maintains an active voice studio in San Francisco.

LIZZIE MOSS (‘12) Miss Connelly/Chorus. This is Lizzie’s fourth time on the Lamplighters stage, having most recently been seen as Sacharissa in Princess Ida. Lizzie made her Lamplighters debut as chorus and dance captain in The Gondoliers and also appeared in the 60th Anniversary Gala. Lizzie is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy where she studied at both the Hollywood and New York City campuses.

KELCEY JAY POE (’01) Mrs. Hope. Kelcey is thrilled to be back with the Lamplighters for The Sorcerer! She has recently been seen performing in West Edge Opera’s West Coast Premier of Daron Hagen’s Vera of Las Vegas, as well as choreographing Jan Brown’s production of Little Women, the Musical at Masquers Playhouse. Kelcey thanks her wonderful husband, Phil Lowery, for getting her into all this, as well as our four cats for letting her use them for stress-relief!

LYNN OAKLEY (’80) Violin I. Lynn was a 20-year member of the Marin Symphony, and continues to play throughout the Bay Area with Villa String Quartet and various music organizations. She and her husband Roy are founders of the Villa Sinfonia Foundation, which presented the Governor’s Award at the 2001 Grammy Awards and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2002.

KELLY POWERS (’01) Miss Ransbottom/Mrs. Partlet.

Kelly spent many contented years with UC Berkeley’s Alumni Chorus before discovering she could walk and sing at the same time, and now may be spotted on stage regularly with local opera and musical theater companies. With the Lamplighters she has performed chorus or compramario roles in nearly all of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, and has also enjoyed featured roles in their productions of The Merry Widow (Sylviane) and My Fair Lady (Mrs. Pearce). The annual Lamplighter Gala is her favorite thing ever, wherein she has been privileged to impersonate many zany characters, including “Annie Oakley,” and “Buffy the Vampire Lawyer.” Kelly currently studies voice with Pamela Hicks.

YASUSHI OGURA (’09) Violin. Yasushi is concertmaster of Napa Valley Symphony and Pocket Opera. He often performs for Broadway shows in San Francisco, acts as guest concertmaster with various regional orchestras and was concertmaster/soloist with Diablo Ballet. HALLIE RANDEL (’12) Miss Stanton/Chorus. Hallie is happy to be back with the Lamplighters after performing in the Summer 2012 production of The Mikado. She is an alumna of San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Summer Music West, SongFest’s Young Artist Program and the Berkeley-based Pacific Mozart Ensemble.

CAITLYN RILEY (Debut) Miss Barrie/Chorus. Caitlyn is a working college student in San Francisco. She has spent the last five years teaching voice at the Crocker House Creative Arts Center and recently moved to the Bay Area to further her education in music. This is her first show with the Lamplighters.

A.C. ROBERTS (‘12) Mr. Mosely. Alan has performed with multiple theatre troupes in productions of The Threepenny Opera, Die Fledermaus, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Les Mamelles de Tirésias, and The Mikado, to name a few. He is delighted to participate in another Lamplighters Music Theatre production.

KATHY ROSNER-GALITZ (Debut) Miss Redding/Chorus.

Kathy is delighted to sing with the Lamplighters. Prior to her move the Bay Area, she performed 8 seasons with Sacramento Opera as well as numerous other choirs there and in her “hometown”, Los Angeles. She runs a commercial/corporate lending operation for Bank of the West in San Jose.

DARYL SCHILLING (’71) Violin I. Daryl was in the original Lamplighters orchestra and enjoys playing for the troupe tremendously. CARL STANLEY (’74) Bass. Carl performs professionally with orchestras and theater groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He first played bass with the Lamplighter’s Orchestra in the mid 1970’s. He currently serves as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Education Coordinator for the Oakland East Bay Symphony. He was an instrumental music teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District for many years.

MEGAN STETSON (Debut) Miss Crawley/Lady Sangazure.

Mezzo-soprano Megan is an active performer in the Bay Area, singing and dancing with various local opera companies including Opera San Jose, Ensemble Parallèle and Berkeley West Edge. Some of her professional credits include the title role in Carmen; Princess Betsy in Carlson’s Anna Karenina; Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro; Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and Hélène in La belle Hélène. Megan also both choreographed and performed lead roles in La Vie Parisienne and La Traviata with Pocket Opera.

ROBERT VANN (’10) Mr. de Bracy/Alexis. Robert is honored to be returning again to the Lamplighters where he was last seen as Hilarion in Princess Ida. Other Lamplighters performances include Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, Marco in The Gondoliers and Colonel Fairfax in The Yeomen of the Guard. Recent performances include Pollione in Norma with Pocket Opera and the tenor soloist in Sacramento Ballet’s Carmina Burana. Other Gilbert & Sullivan roles include Tololler in Iolanthe, Edwin in Trial by Jury, Richard Dauntless in Ruddygore, and Luiz in The Gondoliers (with Light Opera Theatre, Sacramento). Favorite non-Savoy roles include Alfredo in La Traviata, Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He resides in Sacramento with his wife, soprano Carley Neill.

GREGORY SYKES (’93) Violin. Gregory has been studying violin and making music in the Bay Area since elementary school. He holds a Bachelor’s in Music from UC Berkeley and studied privately with Mariko Smiley, Charles Meacham and Elizabeth Gibson. He has also studied voice with Erin Neff. Gregory has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Oakland East Bay, Santa Rosa and Vallejo Symphonies and has played in the pit accompanying musical theater productions for numerous dramatic troupes, most especially the Lamplighters! Thanks for all the memories!

GRAHAM TAYLOR (’12) Cornet. Graham grew up in Irvine, where he began studying with Bill Perkins at the age of 11. By 14, he was studying with David Washburn, principal trumpet of LA Opera and Chamber Orchestra. He received a Master of Music degree from the SF Conservatory of Music. Graham recently joined the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, performed the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto with the Eureka Symphony, and became a member of the Pageant of the Masters orchestra in Laguna Beach. He and his wife Alison reside in Berkeley.

LINDSAY THOMPSON ROUSH (’11) Miss Stillman/ Aline. Lindsay, originally from San Jose, California, is a lyric-coloratura soprano, who debuted with the Lamplighters as Josephine in HMS Pinafore, returning last summer to perform as Yum-Yum in The Mikado.

She graduated in 2010 from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she received both her BM and MM degrees in Vocal Performance on a fullmerit scholarship. Lindsay performed four opera roles while at Peabody, including Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, and Adele in Die Fledermaus. She could not possibly be more thrilled to be returning to Lamplighters!

CARMELLO TRINGALI (‘12) Mr. Mouillon/Chorus.

This is Carmello’s fourth full production with the Lamplighters. He was in the choruses of Princess Ida, The Gondoliers and The Mikado. He also participated with the Lamplighters in last year’s Gala and Hidden Treasures, and last October performed his first lead role as Camille in The Merry Widow with Lyric Theatre of San Jose. He hopes you will be seeing more of him soon.

SARAH VARDIGANS (’06) Managing Director. For 27 years Sarah worked as Company and Touring Manager for numerous performing artists from all over the world, including Luciano Pavarotti, Boston Ballet and Rudolf Nureyev, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Moscow Circus, Astor Piazzolla, and 10 years with San Francisco Ballet. She has also managed international touring Broadway productions of A Chorus Line, Evita, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, and The American Dance Machine. She currently moonlights as Stage Manager for the Music at Kohl Mansion Chamber Music series and for the New Century Chamber Orchestra.

MAAYAN VOSS DE BETTANCOURT (‘12) Miss Everdeen/ Chorus. Maayan fell in love with opera at twelve and has pursued it ever since. She recently graduated from The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State, Long Beach with a BM in Performance and a minor in Theatre Arts. Since that time she has been feeding herself a steady diet of private lessons with Sally Munro and productions, the most recent of which was Twelfth Night at the Phoenix Theater, where she was the understudy to Olivia and played Valentine, First Officer, and Second Officer.

RICK WILLIAMS (’78) Artistic Director. Rick has performed every G&S patter role with the Lamplighters, often multiple times. He won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 1986 for Ko-Ko (The Mikado) and appeared as King Gama in our award-winning Princess Ida. He performed Higgins (twice) in My Fair Lady and was Fredrik in A Little Night Music, for each of which he was nominated for Critics Circle Awards. Other roles with the Lamplighters include Dick Deadeye (HMS Pinafore), both Baron Zeta and Njegus (The Merry Widow), Pangloss (Candide), Andy (Show Boat), Frosch (Die Fledermaus), Horace (Hello, Dolly!), Spettigue (Where’s Charley?), Lutz and Toni (Student Prince) and George Grossmith in Gilbert & Sullivan à la Carte. Rick is the winner of three other BATCC Awards for Best Actor in a Musical, for the title role of Man of La Mancha and twice

his equally dear Sophia; two people who put up with him despite his extreme addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan. Family is so great!

DIANA DORMAN (‘72) Clarinet/Music Librarian/ Contractor. Since joining us for our first Ernest in Love, Diana has played principal clarinet in all our productions. She also performs with Berkeley Symphony and Pocket Opera, has performed with SF Opera, including the video recording of R Strauss’ Capriccio for London/Decca and has performed and toured nationally with Western Opera Theater since 1989. As librarian Diana restored the Broadway orchestra parts for our 2008 production of The Secret Garden. She is on the faculty of Dominican University.

ROBERT DORSETT (’95) Mr. Tanner/Chorus. A third generation San Francisco performer, Robert has appeared with Berkeley Opera, Diablo Light Opera, Donald Pippin’s Pocket Opera, Altarena Playhouse, Stanford Savoyards and, of course, the Lamplighters.

LAURA EHRLICH (‘03) Miss Terry/Chorus. Laura has been a devoted fan of Gilbert & Sullivan and the Lamplighters since childhood, and is always delighted to perform with the Lamplighters, most recently in The Yeomen of the Guard and the 2011 Gala. When not singing choruses in public, she works as an ER nurse.

KATHERINE FELLER (’10) Miss Blakely/Chorus. “Kat” is delighted to be taking part in her sixth Lamplighters production. A 25-year-old alumna of CSU Chico, she begins post-college life by returning to her hometown, San Francisco. She has performed roles such as Adele (Die Fledermaus) and Valencienne (The Merry Widow). She is also an affirmed chocoholic.

ROSE FRAZIER (’06) Miss Richards/Constance.

Since first joining the Lamplighters for The Pirates of Penzance, Rose has participated in twenty-five Lamplighters productions, including ten Gilbert & Sullivan operettas (with only one repeat), three classic musicals, five annual Champagne Galas, one straight play by W.S. Gilbert, two G&S Sing-Alongs, and three Hidden Treasures fundraisers. In May of 2012 Rose completed her undergraduate degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and while she eagerly anticipates moving away this fall to continue her education, she will miss her Lamplighters “family,” and is sure to return home to them someday soon.

TINA-MARIA GARCIA (‘05) Miss Pratt/Chorus. Tina enjoys performing with local Musical Theater and Opera companies, in addition to running a thriving voice studio in the east bay. A Bay Area native, she received her Masters in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Recent roles include Jenny Lind (Barnum), Mamma Maddalena (Nine), and Marian (The Music Man). Tina is thrilled to return for her fourth Lamplighters show.

JOSEPH GIAMMARCO (‘05) Supertitles Manager. Joe has performed numerous supernumerary roles with San Francisco Opera and Houston Grand Opera over the past 17 years. His Lamplighters debut was as the Headsman in the 2005 production of The Yeomen of the Guard, in which his wife, Claire Kelm played Elsie Maynard.

Joe often works behind the scenes in Lamplighters productions, assisting backstage or running supertitles.

SHARON GOSSELINK (‘12) Development Assistant.

Sharon is one of the newest additions to the Lamplighter family. She’s an undergrad at SFSU, studying Biochemistry. In her spare time, she enjoys playing music, sewing, painting pewter miniatures, and anything related to cheesy fantasy.

ANDREW GUSTAFSON (’10) Mr. Walden/Chorus. Andrew knew he was destined for stardom when he premiered as Augustus on the Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp award winning show, Charlie and the Golden Ticket. Sadly, the show never made it out of the woods, or more accurately, Stanislaus National Forest. After a short period of mourning, and gorging himself on chicken sandwiches from Bakesale Betty’s (the secret’s in the coleslaw, folks), he pounced back on stage as a pirate, and a cop in The Pirates of Penzance. Love to Brenna and my family.

JANE ERWIN HAMMETT (’83) Stage Director. Jane was last seen on our stage as Sari in Noel Coward’s Bitter Sweet.

She is thrilled to direct The Sorcerer for the first time. Other recent Lamplighters directorial assignments: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Patience, Iolanthe, Ruddygore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Gondoliers, The Secret Garden and several Galas, including You Can’t Bite City Hall. Other credits include The Marriage of Figaro, Orpheus in the Underworld and Roberto Devereux for Pocket Opera, plus Pirates, The Elixir of Love and The Daughter of the Regiment for the SF Opera Guild’s Education Outreach program. Since her Lamplighters debut as Mabel, Jane has sung nearly every comic heroine in the G&S canon, many other leads on our stage, plus numerous roles for West Bay Opera and Pocket Opera. For nearly four years she performed across the US with two national companies of The Phantom of the Opera (directed by Harold Prince). Her performances have been recognized with two Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle Awards and a Drama-Logue Award for her Rose Maybud (Ruddygore), Vampira (The Phantom of the Operetta), and Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady). She teaches voice privately and at Sonoma State Univerity.

MARY HARGROVE (‘90) Flute/Piccolo. Mary is principal flute with Cadenza Chamber Orchestra, St. Peters Chamber Orchestra and Nederlander Broadway productions in San Jose. She plays flute and piccolo for Opera San Jose, Ballet San Jose, and the San Francisco Opera Merola program, as well as freelancing with Santa Cruz Symphony and many other Bay Area orchestras.

AMY HIMES (‘12) Development Director. Amy is a Certified Fundraising Executive who has provided leadership and support to cultural organizations for over a decade. She is a singer and theatrical director, and holds a BA and MA in Theatre Arts from Florida State and San Jose State Universities, respectively. She lives in San Jose and enjoys taking the train to work.

ROBERT TED ANDERSON (’04) Lighting Designer. Rob has worked in the Bay Area for over ten years. Other companies include West Bay Opera, The Willows Theatre, Oakland Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, Berkeley Opera, St. Mary’s College, City of Pleasanton, Tri Valley Rep Company, Ronn Guidi Dance Company, Western Ballet, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Oakland Ballet, Crossroads Theater, Savage Jazz Dance Company, and Lily Cai Dance Company.

MAGNUS ASBO (‘12) Mr. Goddard/Chorus. Magnus comes to the Lamplighters from choirs in the North and East Bay, where he sings music with several medieval and classical ensembles. This is his second performance of anything as modern as Gilbert & Sullivan.

GEORGE ASHWORTH (‘11) Mr. McLeod/Chorus. After filling audiences with dread for an entire scene in his company debut as The Yeomen Of The Guard’s headsman and assisting production for Engaged and Trial By Jury, George exploded back onto the stage as vibrant, water-borne characters such as a sailor in H.M.S. Pinafore and a gondolier in The Gondoliers.

OMID ASSADI (’07) Viola. Omid holds an MM from SF Conservatory of Music where he studied with Jodi Levitz and Bettina Mussumeli. He has concertized with many Bay Area orchestras and has appeared numerous times as a soloist with Golden Gate Philharmonic, City College of SF String Orchestra, Kensington Symphony Orchestra, and Villa Sinfonia. A love for chamber music has led him to study with the Kronos String Quartet and SF Conservatory of Music. He has collaborated with Jennifer Culp, Jodi Levitz, Jorja Fleezanis, and with the Shams Ensemble.

JEFFREY BEAUDOIN (‘87) Mr. McAllister/Hercules. After making his debut in The Pirates of Penzance, Jeff has appeared in all of the G&S operas plus Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, La Périchole, Where’s Charley? and many Galas.

He has also appeared with us as The Notary (The Sorcerer), Lt. Solo (Galas ‘91 & ‘09), Max (Gala ‘94), Dances With Weasels (Gala ‘96) and as Scynthius in our award-winning Princess Ida in England. Jeff was also seen as Giorgio (The Gondoliers) in NYC, Lane (Importance of Being Earnest) in SF and in the ensemble of Mame in Petaluma.

ADAM ARTHUR BIER (’12) Mr. Hill/Chorus. Adam returns to the stage with his third production for the Lamplighters. A Berkeley native, Adam’s major interests include opera (especially the late German romantics), art songs, discovering exciting new things to eat, liberal whisky tasting, and performing arts audience development. His day job involves rather a lot of paper.

KEITH BUCHER (’77) French Horn. Keith was delighted to return to the Lamplighters Orchestra in 2000 after having spent 12 years in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana. He studied at Northwestern University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and started his musical career in the US Marine Band. From 1978 to 1987 he was a fixture in the pit orchestras for major San Francisco musical theatre productions and is currently a freelance musician who performs with organizations from the Bay Area to Sacramento.

JAMES CAMPBELL (‘76) Music Director/ Mr. Clarke/ Conductor. Over the years, Jim has performed numerous functions for the Lamplighters, including producing our last Secret Garden and My Fair Lady. He also conducted our most recent Iolanthe. In the past he has been a rehearsal pianist, assistant conductor to Gil Russak, assistant to the producer, production stage manager, music director and various other tasks as well. He has also worked for the San Francisco Opera, Eugene Opera, Anchorage Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Wildwood Festival for the Performing Arts in Arkansas, as well as ten seasons as production stage manager for the Tacoma Opera. He recently made his debut in non-musical theater as stage manager for the Rogue Theater in Tucson, Arizona.

PAMELA CAREY (’91) Violin I/Concertmaster. Pam is a freelance musician who performs frequently throughout the Bay Area with such groups as The Mountain Play, Contemporary Opera Marin, Woodminster, Cinnabar, and CCMT. She is currently on the faculty at Saint Hilary School and Dominican.

KATHLEEN CONNER (’73) Oboe. Kathleen has performed with Monterey, Santa Rosa, Berkeley and Napa Symphonies and Pocket Opera. She coaches woodwind ensembles at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and is artist-in-residence at School of the Arts. She is on the faculty at both the Capp Street and Richmond branches of the Community Music Center.

GLENN D’MELLO (’12) Mr. Luther/Chorus. Glenn was recently seen as Lt. Munoz in the musical City of Angels at Studio ACT. He has performed improv, salsa for half time shows at Raiders games, and in amateur ballroom competitions. Glenn resides in San Francisco and has an engineering degree.

NICHOLAS DAHLMAN (’12) Properties Manager/Mr. Pratt.

Before moving to the Bay Area, Nicholas performed in many Gilbert & Sullivan productions with the Valley Light Opera of Amherst, MA, as well as an array of plays ranging from Shakespeare to Stoppard. He now works as a systems engineer for Netblaze Systems in Walnut Creek.

GWYNETH DAVIS (’88) Cello. Gwyneth lives in Sebastopol with her partner and an ever-changing cast of animals. She has played with most of the regional orchestras in the Bay Area. As a member of the Eloquence String Quartet she has provided wedding music for hundreds of couples, mostly in the Napa and Sonoma wine country. She also enjoys performing with the VOT early music ensemble on baroque cello and viola da gamba.

During the day she works as a professional pastry chef. An incorrigible Anglophile, she seizes any opportunity to travel to England.

PETER DE VRIES (’97) Mr. Templeton/Chorus. Peter is surprised to discover that he has sung in six Lamplighter operettas: The Yeomen of the Guard (’97), Ruddygore (’00), The Mikado (’08), Patience (’10), Trial by Jury (’11) and the fabulous Princess Ida (’13). His favorite roles of all, however, remain playing husband to his beloved Shelly and father to

for John Adams in 1776, all with the Willows Theatre, as well as the 2010 Arty Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama (Dodge in Buried Child, with Bay Area Stage). He has appeared with Shotgun Players, Ross Valley Players, 42nd Street Moon, West Bay Opera, Pocket Opera, Berkeley Contemporary Opera, Peninsula Civic Light Opera, Piedmont Light Opera Theater, Hayward Little Theater, Palo Alto Players, and in the Bracebridge Dinner at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite.

Roles include both Scrooge and Marley (A Christmas Carol), Ben (The Secret Garden), Rev. Gardner (Mrs. Warren’s Profession), Alfieri (A View from the Bridge), Bauer (Pardon My English), Og (Finian’s Rainbow), Mr. Lundy (Brigadoon), Magwitch (Great Expectations), Dr. Bartolo (Barber of Seville), the Sacristan (Tosca), Fagin (Oliver), and both the Baron and Madame Quimper-Keradec (Vie Parisienne). The Lamplighters welcomed Rick as Artistic Director on March 1, 2013.

MICHAEL WIRGLER (’79) Clarinet. Michael is a composer and an arranger, as well as conductor of the Golden Gate Park Band. He received his masters from SFSU, and is currently a music teacher with the Oakland public schools. He has two cats, loves bowling, and has two dreams: to bowl a 300 game, and to conduct an orchestra.

DANIEL WOOD (’07) French Horn. Daniel graduated from UCLA in music, founded the horn quartet QUADRE in 1998 and has performed over 700 concerts with them throughout the US. He recorded, composed and produced 3 albums with the group, has lectured on the “Business of

Early

Music” at numerous conferences and institutions and was one of the participants in the US Classical Music Leadership Think Tank of 2005 and 2007. Daniel is a current faculty member at the Community School of Music and Arts and SF Conservatory, prep division.

MELISSA WORTMAN (’80) Costume Design. In addition to designing over thirty shows for the Lamplighters, Melissa has also designed costumes for American Conservatory Theater, Circus Circus Hotels, KITKA, Abydos Theater, Dance Through Time, Marin Ballet, and numerous private clients. She is the resident costume designer for Bracebridge Dinner Theater created by Ansel Adams, and held annually in the historic Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Melissa is the recipient of five Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominations, two BATCC awards, and two Drama Logue Awards. When not designing costumes, Melissa works as our Costume Shop Manager, has lectured at the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising, consulted for the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa, designed the nationally featured PJ for Karen Neuberger’s Pajama Walks for Breast Cancer Cure, and worked in costume construction for Lucasfilm’s Return of the Jedi, Frank Zappa, Oakland Ballet, CMC and Designs, Festival Opera, SF Miniature Theater, Woodminster Summer Theater, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, I Magnin’s Holiday windows, Gumps Holiday windows, and Beach Blanket Babylon.

Abjure: Disclaim.

Abudah chests: Abudah was a merchant in a pseudo-Persian fairy tale who encountered an enchanted chest (complete with hag) nightly.

Ahrimanes: In Persian mythology, the personification of evil, somewhat analogous to Satan.

Amatory numbers: Songs pertaining to love.

Approbation: Approval.

Guineas: A monetary unit equal to £1.05 or 21 shillings.

Puffing: “we are not in the habit of puffing our goods”–– Exaggerating the worth.

Jorum: A large portion.

Puling: Whining, whimpering.

KCB: Knight Commander of the Bath - an order of chivalry.

QC: Queen’s Counsel - a title in recognition of eminence in the law.

Knells: “Forget your knells”––The sound of slowly rung funeral bells at funerals or other mournful occasions.

Rector: A Church of England clergyman in charge of ecclesiastical affairs of a parish.

Love’s tillage: Cupid’s work.

Aurora: Dawn, after the Roman goddess of morning.

Lowering: Threatening.

Bail: “I will go bail for the liquor”––I will guarantee the quality of the tea.

Melt a rich uncle in wax: Relates to a medieval superstition that one could effect the death of a person by melting their waxen image.

Baronet: A hereditary title ranking between a knight and a baron.

Méssalliances: French for mismatches.

Brindisi: A toast.

Minx: Flirt, harlot.

Caddy: A box containing canisters of tea.

Mustard and cress: Tender sprouts grown from seeds, served as a garnish or salad.

Colonial Bishopric: A district under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of some overseas bishop.

Cosy: A jacket for keeping the teapot warm.

Curate: Assistant to a rector or vicar in the Church of England.

Dark lantern: A lantern with a sliding shutter to confine the emission of light - a burglar’s trademark.

Djinn: In Arabian mythology, spirits of supernatural powers. Djinn is the plural of djinnee, also spelled jinnee or genie.

Electro-biology: Hypnotism (early practitioners mistakenly believed that electricity was involved).

Reflectors: Mirrors used in stage illusions.

Rosherville: A lower class amusement park.

Sally Lunn: A plain, light tea-cake.

Shoals: Crowds.

Simmery Axe: The authentic Londoner’s pronunciation of St. Mary Axe. Sol: “Ere Sol has sunk...”––Roman god of the sun, although in this case Daly means the sun.

Nativity: An astrological reading.

Sovereign law: A law subject to no overriding laws.

Nosology: Study of diseases.

Take: “Oh, I take you”–– Understand.

One Tree Hill: “I often roll down One Tree Hill”–– A rather seedy and disreputable “pastime” of the times.

Tautology: Needless repetition.

Perfidy: Treachery or breach of faith.

Three spoons to the pot: The normal allotment of tea is one spoonful per person plus “one spoon to the pot.” Three spoons to the pot makes very strong tea.

Pew opener: An impoverished parishioner who was allowed to gather tips by escorting the well-heeled worshipers to their pews.

Philology: Study of language and the origin of words.

Philtre: A love potion.

Fell: “Ye demons, fell”, “magic fell” –– Villainous.

Pipes and hogsheads: Wine containers and barrels.

Flageolet: A small, non-reed wind instrument with six holes.

Plighting: The act of becoming engaged to be married.

Garner: A storehouse.

Posthumous Shade: Ghost.

Three-and-six: Three shillings and sixpence.

Tillage: “peace-bearing tillage”–– Figurative land that is tilled to produce a harvest of love.

Vaunted: Boasted.

Widdy: A corruption of widow.

Wishing caps: In folklore, caps that empower the wearer to make wishes come true.

Wood: “we should strongly advise your taking it in the wood”–– Buying it by the barrel.

The Story Setting: The village of Ploverleigh, England.

Late 18th Century.

The villagers sing in celebration of a betrothal: Alexis Pointdextre is to marry Aline Sangazure. Everyone hurries off to prepare for a celebration as Mrs. Partlet enters with her tearful daughter, Constance. Poor Constance is sad because she is in unrequited love with the elderly vicar, Dr. Daly, who suddenly appears setting her heart aflutter. Mrs. Partlet asks Dr. Daly point blank if he has ever thought of marrying. He replies that he has, but has waited too long and will remain a bachelor until death. Mrs. Partlet and the tear-stained Constance depart.

Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre and his son Alexis enter and greet Dr. Daly who recites a long and complex blessing and then leaves. Sir Marmaduke congratulates his son on having “caught” Aline: her family is wealthy and ancient.

Alexis is overflowing with joy and happiness and Sir Marmaduke begs him to control himself. Alexis explains that people are far more open about their emotions these days. They leave arguing amicably.

Aline and the village maidens enter and are joined by Lady Sangazure, Sir Marmaduke and Alexis. Aline and Alexis fly into each other’s arms. Their respective father and mother bow very formally, while confessing in asides that they have been madly in love with each other for many years. The notary enters and Alexis and Aline sign the official betrothal agreement.

Left alone, Alexis explains to Aline his theory that all people should marry regardless of rank. He also confides to her that he has invited a sorcerer to the tea being given in their honor. The sorcerer, Mr. Wells, is to bring with him a philtre – a love potion – guaranteed to bring pure and lasting happiness to everyone in the village. Aline expresses alarm at the idea of sorcery in the village.

Mr. Wells enters carrying the Patent Oxy-Hydrogen Love-at-first-sight Philtre and introduces himself. At Alexis’ bidding Aline goes to fetch a large teapot. Mr. Wells tells Alexis that the philtre will take effect only on the unmarried adults who partake of it: they lose consciousness and – upon awakening – will promptly love the first unmarried person of the opposite sex that they see.

Aline returns, and Mr. Wells calls on his spirit accomplices as he pours the potion into the teapot. The villagers enter and proceed to drink the spiked tea supposedly brewed by Dr. Daly. They comment on how very strong the vicar’s brew is as they pass out on the lawn.

Act II opens with the villagers stirring, groggily, from their sleep. They quickly pair off and begin dancing...

The mission of Lamplighters Music Theatre is to share our enthusiasm and love for the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan through productions of their comic operas and of other works of comparable wit, literacy and musical merit. Our company strives to enrich the lives of current and future theatre-goers with productions of the highest artistic quality, and to offer performance opportunities in the unique style of classic music theatre to established and emerging artists alike. Through youth training, programs in schools and community outreach, the Lamplighters aspire to develop young talent and encourage people of all ages to explore the comic appeal and deep musical rewards of this repertoire.

Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category.
