— THE STORY —

Twenty years ago, the kings of two neighboring kingdoms signed a treaty, the terms of which included the eventual marriage of their children — King Hildebrand is the father of Prince Hilarion, and King Gama is the father of Princess Ida. The children have now come of age and it is time for the marriage to take place. As the curtain rises, Hildebrand and his court are awaiting the arrival of Gama, proclaiming war if the bride does not appear by sunset. Gama’s traveling party is sighted, but the princess does not appear to be among them. First to arrive are his three doltish warrior sons, Arac, Guron and Scynthius, followed by Gama himself, a most unpleasant character. After insulting Hildebrand and everyone else he speaks to, Gama explains that Ida has refused to honor the treaty and has shut herself away at Castle Adamant, where she presides over an all-women’s university. Hildebrand threatens war and Prince Hilarion begs permission to intercede. With his two friends, Cyril and Florian, he proposes going to Castle Adamant to see if they can sway the princess through charm and courtship. Hildebrand agrees, but keeps Gama and sons in captivity until Hilarion’s safe return.

Act II opens on the grounds of Castle Adamant, with Ida’s female students and Lady Psyche, one of the teachers. Lady Blanche, another teacher, expels a student and suspends another for such violations of feminism as sketching a baby carriage and playing chess — chessMEN are forbidden in this all-female enclave. Princess Ida invokes the help of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, in her quest to educate women to equal or excel men. When the students have all gone to class, Hilarion, Cyril and Florian sneak onto the grounds. They find some extra academic robes and disguise themselves as female students. After a chance meeting with Ida, Hilarion is smitten and even more determined to win her love. Florian is alarmed to see his sister Psyche there. He fears she will betray them but she agrees to keep the secret, as does Melissa, a student and daughter of Lady Blanche. Blanche figures out that the three new students are men and is only dissuaded from sounding the alarm when Melissa points out that if Ida marries Hilarion, Blanche will become the head of the university. Blanche’s ambition keeps her silent.

The students gather for lunch on the grass. Cyril has a little too much wine and begins to act like a young man, trying to kiss several of the young women. The coup de grâce comes when Cyril calls out Hilarion’s name. Ida, furious at the deception, runs back toward her castle but loses her footing and falls into a river. Hilarion dives in and saves her from drowning. Despite this heroism, Ida demands that he and his friends be imprisoned. Hilarion tells Ida that if she cannot love him she may as well put him to death, because, without her love, there is no reason for him to live. Before she can reply, Melissa appears with word that Castle Adamant is under attack from Hildebrand’s army. Apparently Hildebrand could wait no longer for Hilarion’s diplomatic mission to succeed and has taken matters into his own hands. The second act ends in a stalemate: Hildebrand gives Ida until tomorrow to release Hilarion from her dungeon and marry him. If she refuses, Hildebrand will kill her brothers and wage war upon Castle Adamant. Ida vows defiance.

Act III begins the following morning. The students are practicing their military maneuvers but in truth they are afraid to go to war against Hildebrand’s army, which becomes alarmingly clear to Ida as she inspects her troops. Ida realizes that her dream of spending her life as an academic among women is ruined and she is despondent. Her father arrives with a proposition that he and Hildebrand have agreed to: let Arac, Guron and Scynthius fight with Hilarion, Cyril and Florian — if Arac wins, Ida may continue as she is, but if Hilarion wins, Ida must relent and marry him.

Reluctantly, she agrees.

The six young men square off for combat. Who wins, and what the consequences are, will become clear by the end of Act III. 3

— DIREC TOR’S CUT: PRINCESS IDA — Edited from an abstract by Barbara Heroux When asked how she originally approached her adaptation of PRINCESS IDA in 1989, Barbara Heroux wrote that she wanted to make Ida NOT WRONG at the end. Ida deserves to be made fun of lightly, as do so many G&S characters, because she takes a fundamentally good idea to an extreme. (cf. Frederic’s sense of duty, Patience’s belief in unselfish love, etc. etc. etc.) But fundamentally, she is not wrong or ridiculous in wanting to achieve independence from her rather horrible, all-male family, or in wanting to educate women.

Barbara followed Sullivan’s lead rather than Gilbert’s. The music Sullivan wrote for Ida clearly defines her as a leading lady, an intelligent, admirable heroine — and then Gilbert pulls the rug out from under that in the original last scene. She also wanted to make Ida accept Hilarion because she’d grown to love him — which is what happens in the original Tennyson. What did Barbara change? Some of the primary changes in her words: 1) Reassign some dialog among Hilarion, Cyril & Florian. Any time Hilarion says anything snarky or critical of Ida or of women’s education, I put it into Cyril’s or Florian’s mouth instead. This makes Hilarion more of a pure hero, and a better match for Ida’s serious nature.

2) Staging: wherever I could, I had Ida and Hilarion together, with him very interested in what she was saying & pretty obviously falling for her, and her very clearly taking a liking to this “new girl” and being maybe a little disturbed by that.

3) Change the outcome of the fight. Seriously now, how are three young courtiers — in dresses!

— going to defeat three big muscular warriors in hand to hand combat? We staged the fight so that Hilarion was disarmed towards the end and Arac had his sword to Hilarion’s throat. Ida realizes in a flash that she loves Hilarion and can’t bear to see him killed. So, when Ida shouts “Hold! Stay your hands!” it’s to prevent ARAC from killing HILARION, not the other way around.

Hilarion’s offer is now sincere and respectful, one that Ida can accept happily and without losing her self-respect.

How did the British traditionalists feel about the changes Lamplighters had made when we took the production to the International G & S Festival in Buxton in 1995? They loved it. Lamplighters won Best Production, Best Director, Best Overseas Society, and many other awards.

The adjudicator’s closing remarks were: This was a remarkable performance which gave great pleasure to everyone in the theatre.

A memorable night at the International festival, one that I think people will boast about in years to come — they will say they were there the night San Francisco did “Princess Ida.” Congratulations.

— MEE T THE L A MPL IGHTER S — the stage. A native of California, Stacey has played with orchestras throughout the state and works diligently to bring up the next wave of musicians through teaching and coaching young musicians.

NICOLAS ALIAGA GARCIA (‘98) Production Manager. Nicolas moved to the Bay Area eighteen years ago to begin his operatic career after graduating from Tufts University.

Since then, he has performed roles with many companies including Opera San Jose, Pocket Opera, Festival Opera, Berkeley Opera, Oakland Lyric Opera, Oakland Opera Theater, Boston Publick Theater, The Jarvis Conservatory, Lamplighters, TheatreWorks, Golden Gate Opera, and San Francisco Lyric Opera.

He began his directing career with one-act operas for Pocket Opera, where he now serves as Artistic Director.

JEFFREY BEAUDOIN (‘87) Chorus.

Jeff has appeared in the chorus of more than 70 shows with Lamplighters including all the G&S operettas and has appeared as Lars (A Little Night Music), Yvan (Die Fledermaus), Notary (Sorcerer) and Scynthius (Princess Ida). Jeff made his stage debut 40 years ago in Mame in Petaluma.

RICHARD BRANDI (Debut) Chorus. Ida marks the debut of Richard with Lamplighters. A San Francisco native, Richard appeared in the Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre’s Hunchback of Notre Dame and is a member of the Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus.

MAGNUS ASBO (‘12) Chorus. Magnus comes to the Lamplighters from choirs in the North and East Bay, where he sings music with several medieval and classical ensembles.

JENNIFER ASHWORTH (‘01) Ida. Jennifer sings opera and operetta with local companies such as Berkeley Opera, Festival Opera, San Jose Lyric; and is a member of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale, American Bach Soloists and Cappella SF. She has been a teaching artist for the SF Opera Guild since 2003 and is co-creator of the Guild’s program for grades K-3, Sing A Story. Jennifer is the co-founder of Presto! Interactive Opera, and is also the founder and director of the MAD Band at the School of the Madeleine, Berkeley.

NATALIE BUCK-BAUER (‘18) Chorus. Natalie has performed with many theater groups including Contra Costa Civic Theater and San Jose Lyric Theater. Her favorite roles include Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music and Frasquinella in La Périchole. When Natalie is not performing she is an elementary school music teacher. Next up: Cavalleria Rusticana with Pocket Opera.

ROBERT CALONICO (‘74) Clarinet.

Robert is Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, having retired in 2018 after twenty-eight years of service.

He conducts the Golden Gate Park Band and the Danville Community Band. A professional musician since 1972, he played his first Lamplighters show in 1974.

AMANDA RENEE BAINES (‘12) Ada. Amanda is thrilled to add Princess Ida to her growing list of G&S shows performed. She graduated from San Diego State University with a BM in Professional Studios in 2009. She thanks her family and friends for their continued support and for always cheering her on.

AUDREY CARSTENSEN (‘10) Chorus. Audrey’s excited to be celebrating 10 years of performing with Lamplighters! She was most recently seen in Trial by Jury telling lawyer

SARAH DABBY (‘18) Violin. Sarah is a multi-genre violinist/violist.

She performs with a wide range of ensembles, including The Family Crest, Eclecta Quartet, Deltron 3030, Chuck Prophet, Jazz Mafia, Oakland/East Bay Symphony, Marin Symphony, Pocket Opera, and Lamplighters Music Theatre. In her spare time, she enjoys sunshine, yoga, and dog stalking.

SARA CHAZIN (‘19) Violin. Sara is a violinist in the Monterey Symphony and Silicon Valley Symphony. In the Midwest region, she has been a member of the Madison and South Bend Symphonies, and has performed in the Chicago Symphony, and Milwaukee Symphony. Sara also enjoys teaching violin and piano.

NICHOLAS DAHLMAN (‘12) Chorus, Asst. Director, Fight Captain. This is Nicholas’ twenty-fifth production with the Lamplighters since 2012. He also recently played Jack Point in Lyric Theater’s Yeomen of the Guard, Paul Verrall in Benicia Theater’s Born Yesterday, Antonio in a concert version of The Marriage of Figaro, and young Ebenezer Scrooge at Dickens Fair.

NIKHIL CHELLIAH (Debut) Chorus. Nikhil sings in the chorus.

KATHLEEN CONNER (‘73) Oboe.

Kathy has performed all of the G&S shows in her 40+ happy years of playing for the Lamplighters. She also performs regularly with the SF Chamber Orchestra, the SF Opera Merola program and other Bay Area groups. A personal goal is to play oboe on all of the recordings in the Lamplighters recording project.

GWYNETH DAVIS (‘88) Cello.

Gwyneth has played with most of the regional orchestras and opera companies in the Bay Area, and, as a member of the Eloquence String Quartet, provided music for hundreds of weddings in the Napa and Sonoma valleys. She lives in Sebastopol with her partner and Labradoodle. A former pastry chef, she now enjoys performing on viola da gamba and baroque cello with her early music group, the Alphabet Baroque Club.

CHRISTY CONWAY (Debut) Chorus. Christy recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz, where she was actively involved with the opera and theatre departments. Princess Ida is Christy’s first production with Lamplighters.

She is delighted and grateful to join the Lamplighters family. Christy would love to thank her friends, family, and voice teacher for their continuous support.

AMY DUXBURY (‘19) Bassoon.

Amy has called the Bay Area home for over 20 years. Amy received her Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, and currently freelances throughout the Bay Area, from Marin to Santa Cruz. By day she is the Regional Office Administrator at the patent law firm Finnegan.

ELANA COWEN (‘15) Blanche.

Elana, mezzo-soprano, has performed with many companies internationally including on the West Coast: Opera San José, Philharmonia Baroque, L.A. Philharmonic, Bay Area Children’s Theater and San Francisco Lyric Opera to name a few. Operatic roles performed include Olga in Eugene Onegin, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Lidio in L’Egisto and Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti. With Lamplighters, Elana performed the roles of Baroness von Krakenfeldt in The Grand Duke and Pizzi in The (New) Mikado.

NANCY EWING (‘77) Viola. Nancy started as a violist in 1977 and left in 1989 only to return as librarian and viola sub in 2017! A graduate of SFCM and a lover of the Bay Area, Nancy raised a family in Grass Valley and played up and down all the valley orchestras. She is thrilled to be back as part of the Lamplighters family.

JOSEPHA FATH (‘90) Violin.

Josepha is so happy (modified rapture!) to be a violinist with the Lamplighters since the 1990s. She currently performs with the California Symphony, SF Opera’s Merola, and can be seen and heard in many other symphony orchestras in and around the Bay Area.

Josepha teaches at both the SF Community Music Center, and the French American International School. She is an avid chamber music player, with both the Fath Chamber Players, and the Liberty Street Trio.

ROSE FRAZIER (‘06) Psyche. Rose is thrilled to reprise the role of Lady Psyche with Lamplighters Music Theatre. As a professional librarian, she hopes to bring a certain authenticity to the nerdiest lady in the G&S canon. Rose has performed in over 25 productions with Lamplighters, and she most recently sang the role of Susanna in a production of The Marriage of Figaro. In her down time, Rose enjoys constructing enormous collages that she has no place to put.

PAMELA FAW (‘91) Violin, Concertmaster. Pamela is Director of Music at St. Hilary Parish where she also teaches music in their elementary school. She is on the faculty at Dominican University. Pamela is a freelance violinist performing throughout the Bay Area.

She has several dogs and two cats named Gilbert and Sullivan.

DURAND GARCIA (Debut) Fight Choreographer. Durand (MA, MBA, SAG/AFTRA) is also a film producer and content creator. He co-founded Luminarias Theatre Co., which performed twice at Center for the Arts Yerba Buena Gardens. He has directed or produced for St. John’s University, Luminarias, Dominican University, and African-American Shakespeare Company among others. He was the resident Fight Choreographer for African-American Shakespeare Co. (19892019). Luminarias Entertainment Group is his independent film and television company.

STEPHANIE FIELDS (Debut) Chorus. Stephanie is thrilled to be making her debut with Lamplighters. She is originally from Henderson, North Carolina and studied voice at Appalachian State University. Favorite previous performances include Awesometown & The Fantasticks. She would like to thank her hubby Matt for his endless love & support.

ANDREW GREEN (‘11) Chorus, Hilarion u/s. Andrew is very grateful to have had the opportunity to cover Hilarion, and is excited to perform in the chorus for Princess Ida. After graduating from the Lawrence Conservatory in 2019, Andrew performs regularly with groups such as Lamplighters, Pocket Opera, and West Edge. Andrew is the tenor section leader at Piedmont Community Church. Outside of music, Andrew loves the outdoors, fitness, and his family.

CHRIS FOCHT (‘67) Chorus. Chris was in the 4th grade when he saw his first Lamplighters show. Since joining the company as a teenager, he has performed in every G&S show multiple times. Professionally, Chris is a Doctor of Audiology and teaches at SFSU. He’s married and has two grown sons and a cocker/poodle pup named Phoebe.

BRUCE FOSTER (‘19) Clarinet.

From 2010-2016 Bruce lived in Beijing, China where he was Principal Clarinet for the China National Center for the Performing Arts. In 2012 he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in a co-operation concert with the 9

He is a choral singer, a mountain guide, a backpacker and an affordable housing advocate. He currently sings with the San Francisco Choral Society.

NICOLA GRUEN (‘16) Violin.

Nicola performed for several years in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Halle Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony and English National Ballet. Nicola graduated from UC Berkeley and the Royal Academy of Music. She currently performs with several Bay Area orchestras and works at UC Office of the President.

HALEY HOFFDAHL-HEINEN (‘15) Chorus. Haley is delighted to perform with Lamplighters again in Princess Ida. Previous Lamplighter shows include The Gondoliers, Patience, and Ruddygore. She graduated from Boston University in 2012 with a degree in Finance & Economics. She would like to thank her husband, who spends many evenings alone so she can sing with her friends!

LYLIA GUION (Debut) Violin. Lylia graduated from the conservatories of Grenoble and Paris and moved to California in 1997. Since then, she has played with numerous orchestras around the Bay Area. She has coached the Young People Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley for 10 years. She now maintains an active teaching private studio in Alameda.

RON HOUK (‘17) Florian. Previous favorite roles include Chris in Miss Saigon, Tateh in Ragtime, Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, and the mostly-dead Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Ron became active in Bay Area theatre 10 years ago when he arrived in the East Bay after escaping from prison in Texas, otherwise known as graduate school in chemistry.

When not entertaining, Ron spends his time commuting...oh, and working for a technology company in Santa Clara.

MARY HARGROVE (‘90) Flute, Piccolo. Mary is principal flute with Nederlander Broadway productions in San Jose as well as the Masterworks and Stanford Chorales. She plays flute and piccolo for Opera San José, Ballet San Jose, and the San Francisco Opera Merola program.

ANGELA JAROSZ (‘11) Sacharissa, Ida u/s. Coloratura soprano Angela is a frequent performer with companies including Island City Opera, The Handel Opera Project, and Berkeley Chamber Opera. Favorite roles include Amy in Little Women, Belinda in Dido & Aeneas, and Cunegonde in Candide. Angela holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Roosevelt University. She continues to study with the esteemed Jane Randolph. Catch Angela as Soeur Constance in Dialogues of the Carmelites with BCO in April!

BILL HARRINGTON (‘13) Horn. Bill has played French horn with virtually every professional orchestra, opera and ballet company in the Bay Area. He currently plays horn with the Modesto and Fremont Symphonies and Brassworks. “Dr. Bill” received his Doctorate in Music Education from Boston University and is Music Director of the East Bay Youth Orchestras at Cal-State East Bay. BARBARA HEROUX (‘74) Stage Director, Book Adaptation. In over 40 seasons with Lamplighters, Barbara has played virtually every role: appearing in dozens of productions, helping to write at least 30 Galas, adapting the books of Princess Ida and The Grand Duke, serving as General Director or Artistic Director for 14 years, and directing all 13 of the G&S comic operas, one of very few people worldwide to have done so. She is also the 10

JASON JIA (‘19) Chorus. This is Jason’s second production with Lamplighters. He studied Music and Philosophy at Wesleyan University, and he is currently a professional organist and medical interpreter based in San Francisco. A native of Shanghai, Jason has been enamored with linguistics and music and is continuing his adventures in these art forms.

CAMILLA LEONARD (Debut) Melissa.

Camilla is ecstatic to be making her Lamplighters debut in Princess Ida alongside these fantastic artists. Recent credits include The Threepenny Opera (Jimmy / Chorus) at West Edge Opera, Spring Awakening (Wendla) at Left Hand Theatre Co., and Carrie: the Musical (Chris Hargensen) at BareStage Productions.

KATHRYN JUNEAU (‘87) Viola.

Katy received her BM from the SFCM. She is Principal Viola of Lamplighters Orchestra, Fremont Symphony, West Edge Opera Festival, acting Asst. Principal for California Symphony, and plays with the FSQ String Quartet. Katy is thrilled that the family tradition of G & S continues as her son and daughter regularly join the Lamplighters chorus.

MIRIAM R. LEWIS (‘04) Costumer.

Miriam’s shows for Lamplighters include Grand Duke, Gondoliers, The (New) Mikado and Pirates and, for other companies, Salomé, Sagittarius Ponderosa and Warplay (NCTC), Sweeney Todd and Rocky Horror Show (Ray of Light Theatre), and She Rode Horses Like the Stock Exchange, Truck Stop and A Tale of Autumn (Crowded Fire). She received her MFA from SFSU, where she lectures in costume. Miriam is delighted to be ascending to empyrean heights in this production of Ida.

JENNIFER KIERNAN (‘88) Asst.

Stage Manager. Jennifer was a Lamplighters audience member as a child in the 1970s, and for the last 30 years has been a performer, technical artist, and member of the Board of Trustees.

She appeared in 2019 as Dame Carruthers in The Yeomen of the Guard at Lyric Theatre of San Jose, where she also frequently plays cello in the pit orchestra. In the winter you can find her singing Christmas carols at the Dickens Fair and with the Merrie Olde Christmas Carolers.

CAROLYN LOCKHART (‘19) Bassoon. Carolyn joins the orchestra on bassoon.

DAVID KIRBY (‘98) Makeup Designer. David has been a Lamplighter for over 20 years, and has done makeup for nearly every show during that time. As a former performer, he filled his G&S bingo card years ago.

CHARLES MARTIN (‘97) Gama.

Charles first appeared with the Lamplighters as Pish-Tush in our 1997 Mikado, and has since performed many bass-baritone roles with the company including Private Willis, Arac, Senator Jones, Horseman War, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, Dick Deadeye, the Mikado, the Sergeant of Police, Jigger Craigin, the Pirate King, and the Usher. Charles studies voice with Baker Peeples, moonlights as a software engineer, and enjoys the romance of travel and the occasional extreme athletic event.

CHASE KUPPERBERG (‘19) Chorus. Chase is very excited to be a part of this production. This is his third show with Lamplighters and he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to work with this wonderful company. He’d like to thank his family and friends for their continued support.

LYNN OAKLEY (‘80) Violin. Lynn performs with Villa String Quartet, Villa Sinfonia and Villa Chamber Orchestra, Marin Oratorio as well as other groups. Lynn teaches violin and viola and she has written two biographies and an Arcadia neighborhood book about San Francisco’s Twin Peaks. She had her first introduction to G&S in the third grade in Heidelberg, Germany. Her dad was stationed there and the high school students put on H.M.S. Pinafore for the younger students.

Lynn was hooked from that point on.

BRITTANY MELLERSON (‘15) Lighting Designer. Brittany is an East coast native and a graduate of Point Park University’s Conservatory Program, with a BFA in Theatrical Lighting & Sound design. Recent credits include lighting design for the revival of Roger Grunwald’s The Obligation, the 2018 PlayGround Festival of New Works, The Gondoliers and Pirates of Penzance with Lamplighters, Graveyard Shift with SF Playhouse’s Sandbox Series, the 45th Annual Telluride Film Festival and Seen/By Everyone with Theatre of Yugen.

KRIS PALMER (‘11) Flute/Piccolo.

Kris’s awards include 2nd Prize in the NFA Young Artist Competition, 1st Prize in the Carmel Chamber Music Society Competition, and a Carnegie Hall Recital Debut award from Artists International. A former member of the New Mexico Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, she holds a DMA from Rice University.

MURALI MEYER (Debut) Chorus.

Murali, 17, has done multiple musical theatre productions at the Spindrift School of Performing Arts.

He found the Lamplighters via their summer Scenes Program and this is his first production with the company. He studies classical voice with Jonathan Smucker and enjoys reading and playing Magic: the Gathering.

KURT PATZNER (‘77) Trombone.

Originally from Palm Springs, Kurt has performed with every major orchestra in the Bay Area, is currently a member of the Santa Rosa, Berkeley, and Marin Symphonies, and is on the faculty at The College Preparatory School in Oakland. He has a wife and three sons, all of whom are musicians.

REBECCA NASANOW JOHNSON (Debut) Chorus. Soprano Rebecca made her operatic debut as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute at Goucher College, where she also performed as Marcellina in scenes from The Marriage of Figaro. Her musical theatre credits include Fantine (Les Miserables), Luisa (The Fantasticks) and roles in Evita and West Side Story.

NORMAN PECK (‘77) Percussion.

Norman currently holds the Principal Percussion Chair with the Santa Cruz Symphony and West Bay Opera. He plays jazz with a big band every Monday night when he isn’t working, teaches a large class of private students, and provides instrumental contracting services to a variety of clients. In addition, Norman is passionately fond of science fiction, cooking

Bill has sung most of the baritone roles in the G&S repertoire, as well as Falke (Die Fledermaus), Danilo (Merry Widow) and Carl-Magnus (A Little Night Music). He has also performed with many groups around the Bay Area in such roles as Sweeney Todd, Man of La Mancha, 12

and his cat Alex. In January 2016, he and his wife Lynda celebrated their 34th anniversary.

BAKER A. PEEPLES (‘75) Music Director, Conductor. Baker has sung almost all the G&S tenor leads, as well as Eisenstein/Alfred (Fledermaus), Tassilo (Countess Maritza), Paris (La belle Hélène), Karl Franz (Student Prince), and the Defendant in our KQED Trial. Baker has conducted almost all Galas since 1986, as well as hundreds of performances of G&S and other operettas and musicals. Baker was voted best male singer in the 1995 and 1997 International G&S Festivals. He maintains an active voice studio in San Francisco.

ERIC RATNER (‘12) Chorus. This is Eric’s sixth G&S production, including 3 shows with Lamplighters: HMS Pinafore (2019), The Gondoliers (2012), and The Mikado (2012). He also appeared in Utopia, Limited (San Jose Lyric Theater) and Iolanthe (Stanford Savoyards). In his alter ego, Eric is a staff attorney at the California Supreme Court.

ELISABETH REEVES (‘13) Stage Manager. Elisabeth stage manages for several companies around the Bay Area but considers Lamplighters her home. Memorable stage manager credits: Ruddygore (‘15), Yeomen (’17), Song-to-Sing-O (‘17), and Noises Off (Hillbarn ‘17). She was nominated for a TBA Award for Best Props for Pirates (‘18). Elisabeth also performs at the Dickens Christmas Fair and the Renaissance Faire.

BAKER S. PEEPLES (‘04) Violin.

“Little” Baker was wed in babyhood to the shows of G&S, with no surprise or indignation regarding his fate. While some Lamplighter offspring have graced the stage, he fell into the pit.

Baker regularly performs with Symphony Silicon Valley, the Oakland Symphony, and the Sacramento Philharmonic. He teaches at Reeder Music Academy. Go, Giants!

KERRY RIDER-KUHN (‘13) Wig Designer.

JONATHAN POTTER (Debut) Cyril. Jonathan is oh so excited to be in his first Lamplighters production! When he isn’t acting, Jonathan feeds his need to be onstage by teaching Computer Science at City College of San Francisco. He also directs, produces, and occasionally acts for Backyard Theater SF, a group that puts on musicals in backyards to raise money for The Women's Building and SF Women’s Centers. ALAN ROBERTS (‘12) Chorus.

Since Alan joined the Lamplighters in 2012, he has performed in all but three of the operettas from the Gilbert and Sullivan canon. He is also a member of Her Majesty’s Royal Opera, which performs annually at The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party.

SABRINA ROMERO-WILSON (Debut) Chorus. Sabrina has performed with Opera Parallèle, Sing For America, SF Opera, and Old First Concerts. Highlighted roles: Xochitl (Xochitl and the Flowers), The Rose (The Little Prince), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). She is head Cantor at Most Holy Redeemer in the Castro.

Sabrina holds her Master's degree from SFCM.

SAM RABINOWITZ (‘13) Scynthius.

Sam graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in Political Science and received his Master’s from Manhattan School of Music. Recently he has performed with Lamplighters Music Theatre as Giuseppe in The Gondoliers, Coco in The (New) Mikado, Robin Oakapple in Ruddygore, and as a member of the chorus for San Francisco Opera in Turandot, Manon,

CARL STANLEY (‘73) Bass. Carl performs professionally with orchestras and theater groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He first played bass with the Lamplighters Orchestra in the mid 1970s and served as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Education Coordinator for the Oakland Symphony from 1996 to 2015. He was an instrumental music teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District for many years.

since 2003, and teaches music through BUSD. A 2003 graduate of SFCM, she holds masters degrees from Northwestern and USC. She enjoys traveling, working with plants, creating macrame art, being in nature, and spending time with her family.

LUCY SCHOENING (‘74) Flute.

Lucy was principal flute for the Artea Chamber Orchestra and performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Pocket Opera, San Francisco Chamber Players, Oakland Opera and many chamber music groups. She teaches fifth grade and is the mother of two sons.

DAVID SULLIVAN (‘82) Bass.

David has played the bass for over 30 years in a variety of venues including the Berkeley, Sacramento and Santa Cruz Symphonies. When Dave isn’t playing music, he is working at the NYSE Options Floor in San Francisco where he has been a trading specialist for over 25 years, riding his bike in the Oakland hills or making wine at home.

PETE SHOEMAKER (‘14) Guron.

Pete has had a diverse theatrical career that includes leading roles in plays, musicals and ballets. His first show with Lamplighters was The Pirates of Penzance in 2014.

FRANCES SILCOX (‘16) Properties Manager. Easily pulled in to a witty story, what “inestimable treasure” it is for France to take part in G&S stories accompanied by Lamplighters’ voices. France comes to Lamplighters carrying a love of objects and stories across the bridge from the museum world to Lamplighters. She holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from The George Washington University and a B.A. from her favorite city’s University of San Francisco.

CAITLYN SWAN (Debut) Chorus.

Caitlyn is an actress and music producer living in Oakland with her fiancé, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and rabbit.

She has been acting in musicals for over 15 years and holds a Master’s of Music Business from NYU that she received after training at The Crane School of Music for Voice.

GREGORY SYKES (‘93) Violin.

Gregory has been studying violin and making music in the SF Bay Area since elementary school. He holds a BM from UC Berkeley and has studied privately with Mariko Smiley, Charles Meacham and Elizabeth Gibson. Gregory has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Oakland East Bay, Santa Rosa and Vallejo Symphonies and has played in the pit accompanying musical theater productions for numerous dramatic troupes, most especially the Lamplighters! Thanks for all the memories!

ROBBY STAFFORD (‘09) Arac.

Robby was an 8th grade tenor, singing Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore under Barry Mineah at Marin Country Day School (1983). Moving to baritone at San Francisco University High School, Robby was Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls (1985) and Pooh-Bah in The Mikado under Bruce Lamott (1986). At Oberlin he sang Papageno in The Magic Flute under Robert Spano (1991), and at the SF Conservatory, Bottom in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream under Monroe Kanouse (1997).

SARAH SZEIBEL (‘19) Chorus. A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Sarah received her Bachelor’s at Oklahoma City University and her masters at SFCM. She has performed with 14

KRISTEN TANSEY (‘15) Chloe.

Kristen’s thrilled to be back on stage with the Lamplighters family! She earned her BM in Vocal Performance from UC Santa Barbara and has performed with Lamplighters for four years. Past shows range from musicals to operas; favorites include Thoroughly Modern Millie (Miss Dorothy) and Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna).

KAREN WELLS (‘07) Clarinet.

Karen’s playing credits include most of the Bay Area’s regional orchestras & small opera companies. In addition, she has wielded the baton for Berkeley High’s classical musicians for 26 years. She is delighted to once again have the opportunity to share the Lamplighters pit with these awesome musicians.

GRAHAM TAYLOR (‘12) Trumpet.

Graham is an active freelance musician in the San Francisco Bay Area who performs with a wide variety of ensembles. He teaches music at the San Francisco Day School, has a private studio at home, and enjoys working with his brass quintet, Tamalpais Brass.

MICHAEL WIRGLER (‘79) Clarinet.

Michael is retired from Oakland Public Schools where he taught music for more than 30 years. He has recently retired conducting the Golden Gate Park Band, and continues conducting the Alameda Community Band. He joined the Lamplighters Orchestra as clarinetist in 1979, which has been an important part of his life since.

ALICIA TELFORD (‘18) Horn. Alicia is an alumna of SFCM and SF State, where she studied Horn with David Krehbiel, former Principal Horn of the San Francisco Symphony and Bill Klingelhoffer, former Co-Principal of the San Francisco Opera. She is a well-known freelance artist and teacher in the Bay Area, a tenured member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and SF Chamber Orchestra.

REBECCA WISHNIA (‘19) Violin.

Rebecca appears this season with the Berkeley, Napa, Vallejo and Merced Symphonies; Pocket Opera, and many more. She is the violin instructor at Las Positas College in addition to teaching at the Crowden School and Villa Sinfonia. In 2017, her teaching was featured by SFGovTv.

JASON TOTZKE (‘07) Violin. Jason has performed in solo and chamber music recitals in locally and abroad. He is a former member of the Rochester Philharmonic and currently resides in San Francisco where he is a faculty member of the Golden Gate Philharmonic Youth Orchestras.

DANIEL WOOD (‘07) Horn.

Member of the Quadre horn quartet, Teal Crane trio and Avenue Winds quintet as well as chair of Musicianship and Composition for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music PreCollege Division, he’s a SF bay area composer and horn player dedicated to championing new work and thrilled to perform with Lamplighters!

ROBERT VANN (‘10) Hilarion.

Robert has been described as possessing “an effortless, beautiful tenor" by Janos Gereben of San Francisco Classical Voice, and Opera News declared his “glorious B-flat in ‘Oh is there not one maiden breast’ is a true showstopper from a singer that easily packs the vocal

LUANA ZAPATA (‘17) Chorus. Born in Peru and raised in Brazil, Luana holds a BA in Choral Conducting.

She was previously seen with Lamplighters in The Yeomen of the Guard (2017) and The Gondoliers (2018). When Luana is not singing she is a stay-at-home mom to her two sons.
