Las calles de Berlín son un hervidero de tendencias, de historias que surgen de lo impredecible. Cualquier cosa puede pasar y ese es su principal atractivo: esa adrenalina que recorre tu cuerpo cuando te dejas llevar por sus rincones, cuando renuncias a las ataduras, y solo hay espacio para sentirte tú mismo.

La autenticidad de sus calles son un alegato a la belleza cruda y desnuda del asfalto y la convierten en el escenario perfecto para presentar la reinvención de las icónicas EQT de adidas Originals. Este renacimiento se materializa en una nueva colección que también incluye apparel y que apela a un espíritu back to basics. Un nuevo comienzo que parte del pasado: la silueta nació en 1992 como una zapatilla de running y ahora evoluciona hacia el street wear de las nuevas generaciones, aquellas que buscan simplicidad en su forma más pura. Por eso, las EQT recuperan su esencia más sporty y la paleta de colores original para hacer un homenaje a su propio legado. Y en esta misión cuentan con la visión de todo un experto en la materia, Juergen Teller, el fotógrafo alemán responsable de la redefinición visual de la industria de la moda, pasando de la idealización y barroquismo imperante en los 90s, a la honestidad y la naturalidad, con cierto toque trash. Ante su objetivo, los sujetos son ellos mismos, sin disfraces ni poses. Juntos han concebido el lookbook de la colección por las calles de Berlín e incluso han producido un documental para descubrir la historia tras las EQT, haciendo énfasis en el papel que tuvo en su concepción el sentimiento de liberación dominante después de la caída del muro de Berlín. Por eso, hoy, es hora de volver a las raíces.

The streets of Berlin are a unique cultural epicenter; as no other they burst with trends and unpredictable stories all year round. Anything can happen upon their surface and that is their main appeal: the adrenaline that seems to run through their asphalt has the power to infect you every time you get lost among the corners of this marvelous city, leading you to leave all attachments behind and just be yourself. Here, authenticity comes in the form of raw beauty, rendering the concrete nude, and turning this metropolis into the perfect scenario to present the reinvention of the iconic EQT by adidas Originals. This renaissance came to fruition thanks to a whole new collection by the brand, which also includes apparel and invokes the back to basics spirit. A new beginning that originates in the past: the silhouette first appeared in 1992, as running footwear, and it has now evolved into street wear for the new generations to enjoy, based on the needs of the consumers who are now looking for simplicity in its purest form. That’s why the EQT brings back its sporty essence along with the original palette, in order to honor its own legacy. For this paramount mission they relied on the insights of an expert in the field, Juergen Teller, the German photographer responsible for the whole visual redefinition that has been taking place within the fashion industry, moving from the idealization and baroque imaginary of the 90s, to today’s honesty and ease with a certain trashy feeling.

Before his objective, the subjects are themselves, free of any pretense. Together they have conceived a lookbook that takes place in the streets of Berlin, which comes with a documentary that helps us understand the story that lies behind the EQT sneakers, focusing on the sense of freedom that came after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and how such event was determinant for the conception of this model. El vacío no reside en la nada. La nada no se llena, no tiene entidad corpórea, la nada no es nada. El vacío, en cambio, es el inicio del todo. Es el botón del play; el colchón de la primera vez. Es el espacio donde no hay nada y que siempre va a recordarse. Es un error tratar de forma triste al vacío porque desde ese paisaje la vista se relaja, se reconforta, los pulmones cogen aire para seguir respirando, los pensamientos se desnudan para volverse a vestir de nuevo con un traje que responda mejor por nosotros. Es febrero y esta es la primera revista del 2017.

Salimos al mundo desnudos, vacíos pero llenos de lo que está por venir. En este número con portada de la maravillosa Francesca Woodman, hacemos un homenaje a las personas que piensan demasiado y por eso sufren, es importante vaciar el contendor de sentimientos para que los demás no lo ocupen todo. Hablamos con sus padres, que nos dan el consentimiento para escribir sobre ella y publicar su obra, y nos sentimos honrados y agradecidos por ello. Cruzamos el mundo hasta llegar al hogar de Maria Gruzdeva, en Rusia, que busca la identidad de los humanos en los límites, en las fronteras de los países, esos paisajes inhóspitos donde no todo está configurado.

El vaso medio lleno y las personas que lo habitan medio vacías. Eat Humans es el apodo que Brandon Wesley McClain usó al abrirse su cuenta de Twitter y en ese concepto se ha escudado desde entonces para mostrar un trabajo que muestra a alguien totalmente distinto a su persona. Apacible e incluso tímido, las imágenes de Eat Humans son duras, impactantes, de alguien a quien diríamos que el vacío le oprime el alma. John Witzig comenzó a fotografiar la escena del surf en los sesenta. Eran tiempos de Beatles y la guerra de Vietnam, pero este fotógrafo apasionado del mar encontraba su lugar en el vacío de las playas solitarias. Allí donde lo absurdo dejaba de oírse, absorbido por el ruido de las olas. Fotografió a grandes como Bob McTavish o Nat Young y fue impulsor de la Shortboard Revolution. Arcadi de Miguel Sánz ha empezado a coquetear con su cámara y aún no se considera fotógrafo, pero sus fotografías de skateboarding son una oda al equilibrio donde las líneas rectas del espacio vacío marcan el tiempo de un reloj con agujas inmóviles. Es por esa razón que detenemos el tiempo en su movimiento. Andrea DoSouto indaga también en la comunidad skater pero desde los corazones que bombardean pasión por el patín. Ella recoge como nadie sus logros, su tenacidad, su celebración, la camadería y su descanso. Y lo hace siendo una mujer, de las pocas que han llegado para quedarse tras la cámara sobre el patín.

Kyle Hughes-Odgers es un ilustrador australiano que crea a modo de terapia. Naturaleza, con su plenitud llena y un viaje siempre en camino son sus guías en el lienzo en blanco. Sus personajes buscan sus raíces sin escatimar recursos, ya tengan que explorar por el mar, el cielo, bajo la tierra o subidos a árboles. Acabamos charlando con los chicos de Murcia, BackYard Surf, que son los responsables de la creación de la #JägersSurfBoard, el último proyecto de Jägermeister que se asocia al proceso de creación artesanal de una tabla de surf con la composición cuidada al detalle de la bebida. Y acabamos con el viaje de Cecilia y Legi como embajadores de lamono al Bright Tradeshow, como punto de partida de su proyecto BackReal, un recorrido por ciudades donde el pico de la ola no está solo en el mar, también en sus calles, galerías de arte y skateparks.

Emptiness dwells in nothingness; you cannot fill up nothingness, it’s a non-corporal entity, nothingness is nothing. Emptiness, on the other hand, marks the beginning of everything. It’s the play button, the mattress that hosted that first time. It’s the space where there’s nothing and will always be remembered. We fail when we endow emptiness with sad qualities, because it’s in that landscape where we comfort ourselves, rest our eyes, allow our lungs to breath in again and clear our mind, stripping it from previous thoughts that were limiting our perception. It’s February and this is the first magazine of 2017. We are thrown into this world naked, empty but brimming with what’s about to come. In this issue we want to pay tribute to the people that think too much and, consequently, suffer; with a photograph of the amazing Francesca Woodman on the cover, we aim to make everyone remember how important it is to empty the emotional container we all have in our cells. We had the opportunity of talking with Francesca’s parents, who gave us their consent to write about her and publish her work, a trust we cherish and are truly thankful for. We traveled across the world until we reached Maria Gruzdeva’s home, in Russia, whose work explores the concept of identity and how it is determined by limits and frontiers, capturing hostile environments were not everything is fixed. Eat Humans is the moniker Brandon Wesley McClain used to open his Twitter account, and behind such concept he has found refuge to show his work, which is paradoxical to his persona. Peaceful and even shy, Eat Humans’ images are raw and shocking, as if emptiness was oppressing his soul. John Witzig started photographing the surfing scene during the sixties.

These were the times of The Beatles and the Vietnam War, but this photographer, passionate about the sea, found his place among the empty line-ups in the beaches around the Australian coast. There, all the absurd speeches were rendered silent but the crashing sound of the waves. He captured legends such as Bob McTavish and Nat Young, and was at the very heart of the Shortboard Revolution. Arcadi de Miguel Sánz recently started flirting with his camera. He doesn’t consider himself a photographer yet, but his skateboarding snaps are an ode to balance where the straight lines and empty space set the rhythm on the hand of a motionless clock. That’s how he manages to stop time through movement. Andrea DoSouto also explores the skateboarding culture through the passionate hearts of its community . She documents, as no else can, their achievements, tenacity, friendship and exhaustion, and attains all this being a woman, one of the few that has managed to stay strong within the industry. Kyle Hughes-Odgers is an Australian illustrator whose therapy is based in creating universes on paper.

Nature, with its richness, and an everlasting journey are his guides every time he embarks upon a new mission on a white canvas. His characters are in a constant quest looking for their origins without sparing any resources; it doesn’t matter if such pursuit sends them on a voyage across the sea, the sky or on an underground expedition.

We bring it back home with the guys of BackYard Surf, with whom we had a chance to talk about the development and creation process behind the #JägerSurfBoard, the most recent project by Jägermeister, which brings together the artisanal making of a surfboard and the careful high-end composition of the beverage. To finish, we have Cecilia and Legi’s trip to the Bright Tradeshow in Berlin as lamono’s ambassadors, which also served as the starting point for their own project, BlackReal. There, they roamed the city to discover that the lip of a wave is not necessarily found in the sea, but on the streets, art galleries and skate parks.

En los últimos años la situación política mundial ha tomado diferentes matices, volviéndose cada vez más compleja, y a medida que una parte de la humanidad se aferra a la idea de dividirnos y hacer cada vez más notorias las fronteras, del otro lado están aquellos que defienden que todos somos iguales, seres humanos que compartimos pasiones y sentimientos, sin importar lo lejos que estemos unos de otros. A este último grupo pertenece Kévin Métallier, un fotógrafo francés que ha dedicado gran parte de su vida a documentar el skateboarding alrededor del mundo. Esta tarea lo ha llevado a visitar más de ochenta países, desde Brasil hasta La India, con una cámara en sus manos y una tabla bajo sus pies. Al ver su trabajo y dedicación, cuesta creer que no somos todos hermanos y hermanas, y aquello que nos une cada vez es más claro y grande que todas las nimiedades que quieren hacernos creer nos hacen diferentes e incompatibles, argumentos vacíos que, al fin y al cabo, no tienen ninguna importancia.

Over the course of the last decade, the political situation around the world has acquired distinct shades, accentuating the contrasts and becoming increasingly complicated, as a portion of humanity keeps on promoting division and reinforcing frontiers, while on the other hand there are those who stand for the principle that we are all the same; human beings that share passions and emotions, regardless of how many kilometers lay amongst us. One of these individuals is Kévin Métallier, a French photographer who has dedicated most of his adult life to document the skateboarding scene all over the globe. This endeavor has taken him to visit over 80 countries, from Brazil to India, with a camera between his hands and a skateboard below his feet. After discovering his dedication and compromise, it’s hard to believe we are not all brothers and sisters, and that what brings us together is each time more clear and big than the trifles we are made believe make us different and incompatible, which at the end of the day, are nothing but empty arguments.

Sabemos que el skateboarding llegó a tu vida antes que la fotografía, ¿recuerdas cómo te iniciaste en este estilo de vida? Bueno, empecé a patinar un poco tarde, en el 94, al empezar la secundaria.

Yo tenía dieciséis años y uno de mis buenos amigos por ese entonces ya llevaba patinando hacía algunos años. Él fue el primero en contaminarme y muy rápido se convirtió en una adicción enorme este virus del skateboarding. En esa época estaba viviendo en un pequeño pueblo en el campo, al norte de Francia, y no había buenos parques o spots para patinar, así que pasábamos las horas haciendo trucos en un simple estacionamiento, con una acera a manera de manny pad y ledge de madera que nosotros construimos, para poder hacer algunos grinds básicos. Aun así, lo pasamos muy bien, y esa fue la manera en la cual empecé a descubrir la inspiradora cultura relacionada con el skateboarding. Algunos años después de eso tuve mi primera cámara Zenith entre mis manos y fue entonces cuando comencé a tomar fotos de mis amigos durantes nuestras sesiones.

Empezaste a tomar fotos cuando con un grupo de amigos con quienes patinabas decidisteis hacer un fanzine, ¿recuerdas cuáles fueron las imágenes que hiciste para ese proyecto? Si mal no recuerdo, la primera foto que publiqué en este fanzine fue de un FS grind en el capó de un coche viejo, hecho por un buen amigo mío que estaba patinando muy bien. Es curioso que me preguntes esto, porque hace mucho tiempo que no pienso acerca de esta sesión. Recuerdo que la realicé con película Kodak Ektachrome.

El skateboarding te ha llevado a muchos lugares, como Myanmar, la India, Etiopía y, más recientemente, Irán; cuéntanos algo que hayas encontrado por igual en todas partes. Diría que hay un punto que es exactamente igual en todos esos países, por más diferentes que sean: la pasión de los skaters locales. Aunque no tengan acceso a un buen equipo, infraestructura o spots, todos comparten el mismo amor profundo por el skateboarding, y en todos aquellos remotos lugares, quieren compartir esa pasión contigo. Siempre es una buena experiencia conocer a los skaters locales en este tipo de países, y la manera en la cual logran patinar.

¿Qué es lo mejor de viajar? ¡Perderse! Y conocer personas que nunca conocerías de otro modo. ¿Cuál es el lugar más extraño o la situación más bizarra que has vivido gracias al skateboarding? Después de todos estos años viajando tengo muchas anécdotas que me vienen a la cabeza. Tal vez cuando me metieron preso en Río de Janeiro, o aquel día que conocí a Tenzin Gyatso, el decimocuarto Dalái Lama, en un pequeño pueblo en el noreste de India.

Así como hay similitudes entre todos los países que has visitado, ¿qué has encontrado diferente en todas partes? Hoy en día, las diferencias se han hecho más difíciles de encontrar que las similitudes.

Es triste pero es así.

Algunos de los lugares a los que has viajado llevan encasillados por una opinión negativa durante años, lo cual hace que sea difícil llegar allí libre de prejuicios. ¿Cómo haces para superar éstos cuando estás relacionándote con las comunidades y fotografiándolos? Simplemente intento jugar con eso, con los prejuicios. En muchos lugares que he visitado yo era el único turista, o el único tío blanco, que la gente ha visto durante meses probablemente, incluso años a veces. Tienes que lidiar con el hecho de que todo el mundo te está mirando, burlándose incluso algunas veces, o puede que no estén felices de tener allí, especialmente cando llevas una cámara contigo. Como yo veo las cosas, siempre es más fácil cuando intentas comunicarte con los nativos, incluso si no hablas su idioma. El humor, la bromas, pueden ser una solución para romper el hielo.

En algunas situaciones no dudo en reírme de mí mismo y aceptar el hecho de que las personas me están observando. Esta vez yo soy el extraño, en cuyo caso debo mostrar mente abierta y ser capaz de seguir adelante.

Además del skateboarding y la fotografía, ¿qué te motiva para seguir adelante? La belleza de la vida. Si dejas de ir hacia delante, la muerte no está muy lejos.

¿Cómo describirías el lenguaje universal del skateboarding? Bueno, el skateboarding es bastante técnico y específico, requiere años de intensa práctica para asimilar sus bases. También mantiene alejados a aquellos que no lo practican. Una vez lo empiezas a hablar, puedes utilizarlo en cualquier lugar del mundo como un pasaporte para ponerte en contacto con otros skaters que definitivamente hablan el mismo idioma que tú y te abre puertas inesperadas, llegando a conocer a personas increíbles en prácticamente cualquier parte.

Has visitado más de ochenta países, ¿cuál es el siguiente en tu lista de deseos? Las Islas Lofoten para un surf trip en un par de meses.

¿En qué características te basas escogiendo un lugar en específico para llevar a cabo un reportaje fotográfico? No me guío por nada en concreto para elegir mis próximos destinos. Es más espontáneo que eso. Puede ser, por ejemplo, el resultado de un encuentro, de una discusión con alguien, o también porque escuché alguna buena historia y eso me motivó a realizar algunas investigaciones, ver si valía la pena organizar algo allí. Podría afirmar que la mayoría de veces, la gente que conoces es más importante que los países que visitas al final. Es esto lo que hará que el viaje sea un éxito.

Como fotógrafo, ¿te has sentido alguna vez vacío? De hecho sí, varias veces. Creo que cuando tomas muchas fotos durante meses y años, y estás de viaje de manera constante, después de un tiempo necesitas sentarte y mirar a tu alrededor. Respirar con normalidad, relajarte, y empezar de nuevo. El vacío es parte del proceso creativo creo yo.

¿Alguna vez has sentido miedo de visitar un país o una ciudad debido a su tensa situación política, humanitaria o militar?

Honestamente, no mucho. Cuando el área es en realidad muy peligrosa, la evitamos. Y cuando es “peligrosa” en la mente de las personas, la mayoría de las veces no es tan grave como muestran los medios, o a como las personas que nunca han estado allí imaginan que es.

¿Tienes algún proyecto en camino que te gustaría compartir con nuestros lectores? Tengo varios en realidad. Principalmente trabajar en la publicación de algunos libros fotográficos durante los próximos meses. A parte de eso, el próximo mes nacerá mi hijo, lo que debe ser el nuevo proyecto de mi vida.

Hace poco viajaste por Irán. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia y cómo te ha cambiado como persona y como artista? Durante los últimos doce años he viajado mucho, a lugares locos e inusuales, y este viaje a través de Irán fue, definitivamente, uno de los más excitantes.

Primero por la asombrosa cultura persa y, luego, por las personas que hemos conocido. Los iraníes, en especial los skaters, nunca se rinden; están llenos de pasión y motivación, y nos enseñaron a todos que siempre existe una opción, un plan B, para lograr el objetivo, sin importar lo que piensen los demás. Esa fue una filosofía que me ha impresionado e influyó en mí como persona y artista.

Cuando tomas muchas fotos durante meses y aĂąos, y estĂĄs de viaje de manera constante, despuĂŠs de un tiempo, necesitas sentarte y mirar a tu alrededor. Respirar con normalidad, relajarte, y empezar de nuevo. El vacĂ­o es parte del proceso creativo.

We know skateboarding came into your life prior to photography.

Do you remember what got you first hooked up to this lifestyle?

Well, I started skateboarding quite late, in ‘94, when I got to high school. I was 16 and one of my good friends at that time was already skating since a few years back. It was him who first contaminated me and I quickly got a huge addiction to the skateboarding virus. At that time I was living in a small village in the countryside, in north of France, and we had no good park or street spots to skate, so we just spent hours doing some flat tricks on a simple parking lot, with a sidewalk as a manny pad and an homemade wooden ledge to do some basic grinds. Nevertheless we had so much fun, and it was the way I started to discover the inspiring culture related to skateboarding. A few years after that I had my first Zenith camera between my hands and started to take some photos of my friends during our sessions.

You started taking pictures when you and a band of friends with whom you skated decided to get into a fanzine. Do you remember which were the first pictures you did for it? If I remember well, the first pic I ever published in this fanzine was a fs grind on the hood of an old car, done by a good friend of mine who was skating quite well.

It’s curious you asked me this question, because it’s been a really long time since I don’t think about this shot. I remember I was shooting it on a Kodak Ektachrome film.

Skateboarding has taken you to many places, such as Myanmar, India, Ethiopia and, most recently, Iran; tell us something that you have found is the same everywhere. I would say that there is one trait that is exactly the same in all those countries, as different as they can be: the passion of the local skaters. Even if they don’t really have access to good equipment, good infrastructures, good street spots… they all share the same deep passion for skateboarding, and everywhere in those relatively remote countries, locals really want to share it with you. It’s always a good experience to meet the local skaters in this kind of countries, and the way they manage to be able to practice skateboarding.

Describe the universal language of skateboarding. Well, skateboarding could be defined as a pretty specific and technical language, which requires years of intense practice before being able to assimilate its bases. It also keeps away the ones that don’t practice it. Once you start speaking it you can use it anywhere on the whole planet as a passport, and to get in touch with others skateboarders who definitely speak the same language as you do, no matter if they come from the other side of the world. It might help you to open unexpected doors and meet incredible people pretty much everywhere.

Based on what characteristics do you choose a specific location to carry out a photographic report? I wouldn’t say that I have some specific characteristics to choose my next destinations. It’s more spontaneous than that. It can be, for example, the result of a meeting, of a discussion with someone, or also because I’ve heard some good stories and that motivates me to make some investigations, to see if it’s worth organizing something there… I would say that most of the time, the people you meet are more important than the countries you visit. It is this what will always determine the success of a trip.

Do you ever get scared about visiting a country or a city because of its tense political, humanitarian or military situation? Honestly, not that much. When it’s really a too dangerous area, we avoid it.

And when it’s “dangerous” in the collective mind, most of the time it means in the reality that it’s not as bad as the media likes to show it, or as people who have never been there are deeply convinced it is.

What is the best thing about traveling? Getting lost! And meeting people that you would have never met otherwise.

Which is the strangest place or situation skateboarding has taken you? After all these years of traveling, there are many that come to my mind. Maybe that time I went to jail in Rio de Janeiro, or that day I met Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalaï-lama in a small village in north east of India.

As there are similarities among all the countries you have visited, what have you noticed that is different everywhere? Nowadays differences are harder to find than the similarities. It’s sad but it’s a fact.

Some of the places you’ve visited have been negatively pigeonholed throughout time, which makes it hard to arrive there free of prejudices. How do you achieve to overcome them when meeting with the communities and photographing them? I just try to play with it, with the prejudices. There are many places I have been where I was the only tourist or white guy people had seen for months probably, even years sometimes. You have to deal with the fact that everyone is looking at you, making fun of you sometimes, or even not really happy to have you here, especially when you have a camera in your hands. The way I see things, is that it’s always easier if you try to communicate with the natives, even if you don’t speak the same language. Humor, mockery can be solutions to break the ice. In some situations I don’t hesitate to make fun of myself and accept the way people can look at me. I’m the stranger this time, and in this case I have to show an open-mind to climb over the fence.

Besides skateboarding and photography, what motivates you to keep on moving forward? The beauty of life… If you stop moving forward, death is not far…

You have visited over 80 countries, which is the next one on your list? Lofoten Islands for a surf trip, in a couple of months.

Do you have any upcoming projects that our readers should know about? I have a few actually. Mainly working on publishing some photo books during the next few months. Stay tuned… Beside that, I’m going to have a son next month, which should be the new project of my life.

As a photographer, have you ever felt empty? Well, I have, quite often actually. I think that when you shoot a lot of photos, during months and years, or you are on the road all the time, after a while you kind of need to seat back and take a look around… Breath normally, relax, and get back on track. Emptiness is part of the creative process.

Recently you traveled through Iran. How was that experience and how did it change you as a person and an artist? During the last 12 years I have been traveling quite a lot, across some crazy and unusual places, and this recent trip through Iran was definitely one of the most exciting ones. First because of the unbelievable Persian culture, and also because of the people we met there. Iranian people, and especially Iranian skaters, never give up; they are full of passion and motivation and they showed us all that there is always an option, a plan B, to reach the goal, no matter what people think… So that was an impressive philosophy of life that influenced me as a person and an artist.

La fotografía tiene diferentes interpretaciones y aplicaciones, pero, tal vez, sus dos vocaciones más claras son como forma de arte y canal de comunicación. Es así como puede llegar a convertirse en una herramienta para el cambio social. La fotógrafa rusa, Maria Gruzdeva, emplea su habilidad de esta manera, a través de una práctica muy concienzuda en la cual se esfuerza por recopilar toda la información necesaria para abarcar con cabalidad el sujeto que pretende explorar y exponer. Uno de dichos sujetos dentro de su obra es el concepto de identidad, en el cual encontramos nociones como cultura y nacionalidad, y por lo tanto, aspectos que determinan estos dos: el paisaje, la historia, las ideas y las costumbres. Hace poco Maria estuvo recorriendo Rusia, tan presente en las primeras páginas de los diarios en los últimos meses debido a la situación política global, explorando sus fronteras para traernos, sin artificios, una representación de los códigos culturales que a lo largo del tiempo han logrado edificar maneras de pensar y constituir una memoria colectiva que, al fin y al cabo, define cómo nos relacionamos los unos con los otros. Es en estos lugares inhóspitos donde, a través de un manejo espectacular del espacio vacío, esta artista nos invita a reflexionar sobre la manera en la cual todo está interconectado.

Photography has various interpretations and applications, but, maybe, its two main vocations are as an art form and communication channel. This is how it can develop into a tool that promotes social change. Russian photographer, Maria Gruzdeva, employs her ability this way, through a conscientious practice by which she strives to compile all the necessary information to thoroughly understand the subject matter she intends to explore and unveil. One of those subject matters is the concept of identity, within which we find notions such as culture and nationality, and consequently, other aspects that shape these two: the landscape, history, ideas, customs, etc. Not long ago, Maria was traveling across Russia -while the country continues to make headlines due to the tense international political situation-, exploring its frontiers, in order to present us, free of artifices, a representation of the cultural symbols that, through time, have stemmed into a way of thinking and a collective memory that, at the end of the day, determines the way we relate with each other. By bringing to us these remote locations, lost amidst the vastness of empty space, the artist invites us to make a reflection upon the way everything is interconnected.

En mi trabajo exploro conceptos como la memoria colectiva, el sentido de lugar y de pertenencia y la relaciรณn entre paisaje e identidad.

Rusia está omnipresente a lo largo de tu obra, ¿de qué forma crees que el concepto de nacionalidad define la identidad, o al menos, cómo ha definido la tuya? La nacionalidad es parte de mi identidad cultural, así como probablemente lo es para todo el mundo. En lo personal, es uno de los conceptos de los cuales obtengo inspiración.

Por lo general, cuando te embarcas en un proyecto, llevas a cabo una extensa investigación, dotando tus documentales fotográficos con una sólida base argumentativa. ¿Podrías explicarnos cómo sueles llevar a cabo este proceso? Para cada proyecto es necesario encontrar un enfoque distinto, el cual te ayude a investigar ideas centrales relacionadas con la temática elegida; el tipo y la profundidad de la investigación dependerá de ésta. Las ideas suelen llegar primero, y son ellas las que guían el resto del proceso. En general, realizar una buena investigación, para mí, es parte esencial del proyecto, ya que te permite obtener un entendimiento más profundo del asunto que estás tratando, además de desvelar capas que yacen ocultas. Por ejemplo, algunos extractos de mi investigación pasaron a ser parte del proyecto y, por lo tanto, fueron incluidos en el libro que publiqué recientemente, Border: A journey along the edges of Russia (Schilt Publishing, 2016).

Te graduaste de la Universidad Central de Saint Martins y luego cursaste un Máster en Fotografía en el London College of Communication, ¿cómo y cuándo comenzó tu relación con la fotografía? Descubrí la fotografía a una edad temprana gracias a libros fotográficos y me enamoré por completo de ella. Como un etnógrafo, busco códigos culturales, tanto en el pasado como en el presente, y cómo se influyen mutuamente, con la identidad y con el paisaje. Éstos nos ayudan a desarrollar un entendimiento del mundo que nos rodea y destacar asuntos relevantes.

De acuerdo con lo que he leído, te tomó cuatro años completar el proyecto The Borders of Russia; cuéntanos un poco cómo fue este proceso. ¿Cuál fue la parte más difícil y la más satisfactoria?

Completar todo el proyecto me tomó más de cuatro años, y viajé mucho alrededor de Rusia mientras lo hacía. Lo más emocionante fueron los viajes a los lugares que fotografié. Estar en territorios fronterizos es una experiencia extraordinaria. Están bastante cargados de historia, y en algunos casos eso se hace tangible. El concepto de frontera también es fascinante; están presentes en mapas y en nuestras vidas, sin embargo son abstractas al mismo tiempo. Lo más difícil fue editar. No solo recopilé bastantes imágenes y material, sino que la naturaleza y estructura del proyecto fue bastante compleja. Lograr comunicar satisfactoriamente las ideas principales de un cuerpo de trabajo depende de varias cosas, y la edición es una de ellas. Tuve que ser bastante crítica con mi propio trabajo y aprender a soltar algunas de las imágenes, incluso las buenas, y eso no es fácil.

Rusia es un país enorme, con tantas diferencias etnográficas como en el paisaje, esto hace que sea difícil definir su presente situación y la atmósfera que allí se respira. ¿Te atreverías a hacerlo? No solo a través de aquello que perdura en el tiempo o de las similitudes se puede definir algo, a través de las diferencias también. En el proyecto

que realicé traté tanto de encontrar las semejanzas y unidad de los territorios fotografiados, como de explorar su geografía y las diferencias que resultan de ella. Ambas, de cierta manera, definen al sujeto. ¿Qué entiendes por conciencia Soviética? La Unión Soviética existió durante casi setenta años, y su ideología fue muy importante. Todo su conjunto de ideales y creencias penetró en el estilo de vida de las personas, y así, hasta cierto punto, se volvió parte del trasfondo y la conciencia cultural.

Al ver tu obra se podría afirmar que eres una fotógrafa documentalista, ¿a quién considerarías tu principal influencia dentro de este campo? La fotografía tiene tantas caras hoy en día que es muy difícil elegir solo a una. Me interesan mucho las obras de los fotógrafos que forman parte de la Escuela de Fotografía de Dusseldorf y cuyo trabajo ha formado parte de la exposición New Topographics.

Al mismo tiempo, admiro la obra de fotógrafos como August Sander, Diane Arbus y, particularmente, William Eggleston, por su uso del color y su capacidad de ver lo icónico en lo ordinario.

Es casi imposible ver simbología Rusa o, más precisamente, Soviética, como la hoz y el martillo o la estrella roja, los cuales están presentes en muchas de tus fotografías, y no vincularla inmediatamente con la política. ¿Qué opinas con respecto a esto? ¿Es algo que buscas a través de tus imágenes? La noción de política y de fronteras están bastante entrelazadas, especialmente en los debates recientes, así que puedo ver de dónde viene dicha asociación.

Sin embargo, yo creo firmemente que estos símbolos tienen un trasfondo mucho mayor, debido a que son, fundamentalmente, símbolos culturales, y dentro de la cultura hay otras nociones, como la historia, las ideas, las costumbres, los patrones sociales, y muchas más. Los símbolos culturales representan un concepto poderoso y complejo.

También son monumentos de una época, piezas de iconografía empotradas en el paisaje.

En muchas de tus fotografías de paisajes el espacio vacío adquiere gran importancia, retratando la inmensidad de la escena que está siendo capturada. ¿Qué buscas transmitir a través de esto? El espacio negativo presente en obras de arte puede ser más importante que el espacio positivo. Sin ser demasiado directo, te da una oportunidad de pensar, preguntar y reflexionar. ¿Y no es acaso ese uno de los propósitos del arte, incluyendo la fotografía? ¿Alguna vez te has sentido vacía? De ser así, ¿cuáles son los aspectos negativos y positivos de esta sensación? Cuando trabajo en un proyecto, me dedico por completo a éste, así que cuando lo termino, una sensación de vacío se apodera de mí, aunque no por mucho tiempo. No creo que conlleve aspectos negativos o positivos, simplemente es parte de un proceso natural y hermoso. ¿Estás trabajando en algún proyecto que quieras compartir con nuestros lectores? El año pasado fui nominada y la primera ganadora del Premio Internacional de Fotografía Arquitectónica y de Paisaje Gabriele Basilico. El proyecto que propuse y con el cual obtuve el premio se basa en la ciudad de Tkvarcheli, en el territorio caucásico de Abjasia. Me topé con este lugar mientras estaba trabajando en otro proyecto en la región, y me fascinó absoluta y completamente. Ganar la competición me dio la oportunidad de regresar allí e investigar la manera en la cual diferentes circunstancias, como el declive en la industria de carbón y el conflicto georgiano-abjasio de 1992-1993, han influido en el desarrollo de la ciudad y en la vida de sus habitantes, quienes han sobrevivido a sus ya varias etapas de transformación.

Russia is an omnipresent figure across your work, how much do you think the concept of nationality determines one’s identity, or at least, how has it affected yours? It is part of my – as well as probably everyone’s – cultural identity. Personally, for me it is also one of the things I draw my inspiration from.

Usually, when embarking upon a new project, you carry out an extensive research, embedding your long-term documentaries with a solid core base. Could you explain to us how does this method tends to unveil? With every project you have to find an approach that helps investigate ideas central to that body of work and the type and depth of research often depends on that. Ideas always come first and they usually guide the rest. Overall, I believe that research is an essential part of a project, as it enables you to get a deeper understanding of the subject matter and unveil additional layers behind it. For example, some extracts from my research became part of the project and hence were included in the recently published book Border: A journey along the edges of Russia (Schilt Publishing, 2016).

You are a Cent ral Saint Mar tin s g raduate and have a Masters Degree in Photography from the London College of Communication, how and when did your relationship with photography begin? I discovered photography at an early age through photography books and completely fell in love with it. By the age of 14, which was when I got my first camera, I was quite certain about what I wanted to do.

Which do you consider is the main objective of photography or what do you try to achieve through it? Photography is an art form and also a very powerful communication tool. In my work I explore such concepts as collective memory, sense of place and belonging and the relationship between landscape and identity. Like an ethnographer I look for cultural codes, both of the past and present, their influence on each other, the identity and landscape. They help develop an understanding of the world around us and bring significant issues in focus.

According to what I have read, it took you four years to complete The Borders of Russia project; tell us a little bit how this challenge underwent. Which was the hardest part of the whole process and the most rewarding one? Overall it took me more than four years to complete the project, and I traveled extensively around Russia while working on it. The most exciting part were the trips to the places I photographed. Being at the border territories is an extraordinary experience. They are quite heavily loaded with history, which sometimes feels almost tangible. Borders are also a fascinating concept – they are present on the maps and in our lives, yet they are quite abstract at the same time. The hardest part was the editing. Not only a lot of material and images have been collected, but also the nature and structure of the project is quite complex. Communicating the main ideas of a body of work depends on a few things and editing is one of them. I had to be quite critical towards my own work and learn to let go of some of the images, even the good ones, and that is not an easy process.

Russia is such a vast country, with as many ethnographical differences as changes in the landscape, which makes it difficult to define the present scenario the country is going through and the atmosphere it breathes. Would you venture to give it a try? It is not only the consistency or similarities that define something, but the differences as well. The project I undertook is as much about finding

the resemblance and unity among the territories photographed, as well as their geographical, and all the resulting, distinctions. They both define the subject matter in their own way.

What do you understand as Soviet consciousness? During almost seventy years that the Soviet Union existed, a lot of significance was given to its ideology. The set of ideas and beliefs gradually penetrated into people’s way of life, thus to some extent becoming part of their cultural background and consciousness.

After seeing you body of work, it can be stated you are a documentalist photographer; which would you consider your main influences in this field? Photography has so many faces today, that it is very hard to pick just one as an inf luence. I am very much interested in the works of photographers who are part of the Dusseldorf School of Photography and whose work was part of the New Topographics exhibition. At the same time I highly admire the works of photographers such as August Sander, Diane Arbus and, in particular, William Eggleston, for his use of color and seeing the iconic in the ordinary.

It’s almost impossible to see Russian or, more precisely, Soviet symbols, such as the hammer and sickle and the red star, which are present in many of your photographs, and not link them straight away with politics, what do you think about this? Is it something you are aiming for? Notions of politics and borders are quite entangled, especially in recent debates, so I can see where such associations might come from. However, I strongly feel that there is much more behind these symbols, as they are cultural symbols fundamentally, and culture includes other notions, such as history, ideas, customs, design, social patterns and many others. Cultural symbols represent a powerful and complex concept. They are also monuments of an epoch, pieces of iconography embedded in the landscape.

In many of your landscape photographs the empty space acquires a great deal of importance, portraying the immensity of the scenery being captured, what are you aiming to convey through this? Negative space present in works of art can sometimes be of more significant than positive space. Without being too direct, it gives you an opportunity to think, question and reflect. And isn’t that one of the purposes of art, including photography?

Have you ever felt empty? If so, what are the positive and negative aspects of such sensation? When I work on a project I fully dedicate myself to it, so when it’s over a certain feeling of emptiness might come upon me, but not for long. I don’t think about it as of having a negative or positive effect – I think it’s just part of a natural and beautiful process.

Are you currently working on any new projects that you would like to share with our readers? Last year I was nominated and became the first winner of the Gabriele Basilico International Prize of Architecture and Landscape Photography. The project I proposed for the Award is about the city of Tkvarcheli, in the Caucasian territory of Abkhazia. I came across it while working on a different project in that region, and I became fully and entirely fascinated by it. Winning the competition gave me an opportunity to go back and investigate how different circumstances, such as the decline of the city’s coal mining industry and the Georgian-Abkhazian war of 1992-1993, have influenced the development of the town and the lives of its residents, who have survived various stages of transformations of the city.

Humans The future comes about empty T: ANTONELLA SONZA

Interior. Noche. Atlanta (Georgia). Brandon Wesley McClain, aka Eat Humans, está en algún concierto de rap underground como fotógrafo de cabecera del sello discográfico Awful Records. Rodeado de multitudes, siempre está en primera fila, captando hasta las gotas de sudor de la escena emergente de esta ciudad. Allá donde está la acción, está su foto. El guión de la historia de este fotógrafo americano podría empezar así, entre la gente, capturando la fricción humana, el retrato auténtico, la actitud y la personalidad de todos aquellos que lo rodean. Pero también en el vacío de una ciudad en silencio, que esconde entre la basura los residuos de una vida pasada, de la que solo se oye un eco lejano. Ahora, únicamente quedan postales de lo que fue, y de lo que queda, es decir, la nada. El increíble encanto de sus fotografías reside en cómo interactúa con el vacío, dejando una sensación inquietante, como de sociedad distópica en la que él y su cámara son los únicos supervivientes. Y no, no hay canibalismo de por medio.

Interior. Night. Atlanta (Georgia). Brandon Wesley McClain, aka Eat Humans, is present at a rap concert in the city; he got there thanks to his position as official photographer for Awful Records. Surrounded by a vast crowd, always in the front row, he manages to capture the sweat drops that spew from the underground scene of this metropolis. With Brandon, it doesn’t really matter where the action is taking place, he will be there too. The script behind the story of this photographer could might as well begin like this, in the middle of the throng, capturing human interaction, authentic portraits, and the attitude of everyone that’s surrounding him, but as well, amidst the void of a city that dwells in silence, buried in the trash left behind by a past life which still echoes in the air, far away from today. A place where all that remains are postcards of a previous existence, as a capsule that reminds us we will be nothing. The utter charm of his photographs resides in how he interacts with emptiness, evoking a disturbing sensation that makes us think about a dystopian society where him and his camera are the sole survivors, and no, don’t worry, there’s no cannibalism between takes.

¿Cuándo descubriste tu interés por la fotografía? ¿Siempre supiste que era lo tuyo? Descubrí mi pasión por la fotografía cuando tenía 21 años, ahora tengo 25. Antes de ella, el baloncesto era mi verdadera pasión. No fue sino hasta el 2014 cuando me di cuenta de que podía potencialmente ganarme la vida con el arte. Ahora mi vida está dedicada a crear y expresarme de todas las maneras posibles.

‘Eat Humans’ es un nombre bastante atrevido y provocador. ¿Por qué lo elegiste como pseudónimo artístico y cómo se relaciona con tus habilidades? El nombre ‘Eat Humans’ fue, extrañamente, lo primero que se me vino a la cabeza cuando mi amiga Brianna me convenció de abrir Twitter hace algunos años. Por ese entonces ni siquiera estaba tomando fotos. Vivía en Boston con mi padre, mi mamá me había echado de casa después de la secundaria porque no estaba haciendo nada con mi vida. Ese fue un periodo oscuro y confuso para mí, así que se me ocurrió un nombre que lo reflejara.

Honestamente quería que mi nombre fuese extraño para que la gente no me siguiese, ya que no me interesaban las redes sociales entonces, solo solía mirar algunas páginas extrañas y oscuras en Tumblr.

Algunas de tus fotografías tienen un tono oscuro y mórbido, pero aun así, irónico. ¿De dónde surge este elemento? Cualquiera que me conoce bien, o ha estado alguna vez en mi presencia, sabe que soy una persona muy relajada y simpática, pero mis fotografías sugieren lo contrario. Mi arte refleja ese lado de mí que no comparto con los demás. No consumo ningún tipo de drogas, tampoco bebo, así que mi único escape y vía de descarga es mi arte. Lo cual suele ser difícil, puesto que a veces soy extremadamente tímido y fotografiar a otras personas puede resultar un poco difícil para mí. ¿Qué te viene primero, la idea o la imagen? La imagen, siempre.

Mi cerebro se mueve demasiado rápido como para lograr agarrar alguna idea o concepto para fotografiar. Esto explica porqué no suelo realizar series. Todas mis imágenes son como una gran serie continua a través de la cual busco mi identidad. Solía tener bastantes inse-

guridades sobre mi proceso al crear arte, luego entendí que todos trabajamos de manera distinta. Compararte a ti mismo, y tu proceso, con otros, es lo peor que puedes hacer como artista.

También fotografías objetos y lugares, como trozos de la realidad. ¿Te describirías a ti mismo como fotógrafo urbano? De hecho, la fotografía urbana fue el primer género fotográfico por el cual mostré interés, así que en cierta manera, sí. Pero a mi parecer, mi trabajo no encaja bajo ningún género específico, lo cual es frustrante a veces. Esto también se debe a mi cerebro hiperactivo. Siempre he tenido varios intereses, y como resultado, estilos diferentes. Pero últimamente, me he dedicado a viajar con mi cámara tomando fotos a medida que me muevo, así que sí, en los últimos meses he sido más un fotógrafo urbano.

Eres muy activo en tus redes sociales, como Twitter e Instagram. ¿Crees que hoy en día, para los artistas emergentes, estas plataformas son la mejor manera de hacerse notar? ¿Cómo las relacionas con tu trabajo? Las redes sociales son engañosas cuando se trata de compartir tu arte. Mi enfoque siempre ha sido compartir mi trabajo desde el comienzo y dejar que las personas sigan mi crecimiento. Mi objetivo principal como artista es inspirar a futuras generaciones a no tener miedo, a seguir sus sueños, sin importar las circunstancias.

Pero algunos artistas, como Michael Thorpe, uno de mis mejores amigos, prefieren crear en silencio hasta que se sienten listos, algo que respeto enormemente, especialmente en esta época virtual donde la fama inmediata es el objetivo de todo el mundo. ¿Cómo empezaste a fotografiar para Awful Records? ¿Puedes contarnos alguna de las historias más locas detrás de una imagen que hayas capturado de ellos mientras estabais de gira? Todo empezó debido a mi amistad con Ashley Romero, fotógrafa de Awful y novia de Father. Ella es una de mis mejores amigas, por ese entonces una las únicas amigas que tenía en la ciudad. Estaba viviendo en Woodstock/Acworth, Georgia, donde estuve hasta abril del 2015.

Solía encontrarme con ella a pasar el rato, y hablábamos acerca de nuestros sueños como fotógrafos; fue ella quien me presentó a los chicos de Awful. Aún no conocía su música, pero me cayeron muy bien como personas. Luego, finalmente empecé a ir a sus conciertos, donde les sacaba fotos. Po fue quien me pidió que formara parte del grupo oficialmente en enero del 2015. La historia más loca hasta ahora sucedió en el Cry $$$ Tour, en el infame concierto de Oakland.

Para hacer la historia corta, nos quedamos fuera de la furgoneta, con las llaves dentro, dos veces, una fue culpa mía, por lo que llegamos al lugar donde se realizaba el concierto una hora antes de que éste se suponía debía terminar. Los asistentes ya se estaban yendo porque se corrió la voz de que no llegaríamos, pero Father tuiteó que sí iríamos, así que todo el mundo estaba confundido. Carti no estaba con nosotros en la furgoneta, así que él sí llegó antes y se presentó.

Nosotros llegamos mucho más tarde. Luego, no sabemos cómo, Ferry, el manager de Father, fue golpeado por alguien que trabajaba en el lugar, y ahí comenzó la locura. Fue terrible, pero bastante gracioso ahora que lo recuerdo.

Como nos cuentas, el año pasado estuviste en el Cry $$$ Tour junto a Father, Playboi Carti, KeithCharles y Slug Christ.¿Cómo fue documentar dicha gira? El mejor y más dramático mes de mi vida. Antes de que empezara la gira yo tenía un trabajo de mierda, el cual no podía soportar un día más. Así que fue un cambio muy drástico, pasar de currar de nueve a cinco a estar de gira a través del país junto a tus amigos, con fans en cada ciudad. Cada vez que me metía entre la multitud para tomar una foto, había un niño con una cámara mirándome, era algo difícil de creer a veces. También estaba pasando por una ruptura muy dura, lo cual contribuyó con altibajos emocionales. Pero en general ha sido, honestamente, lo más divertido que he hecho en mi vida.

Espero poder participar en más giras en el futuro.

Atlanta ha sido, probablemente, la ciudad que más influencia ha tenido dentro de los géneros de música urbana, como el hip-hop y el soul. ¿Qué significa la aparición de nuevos artistas, como los

de Awful Records, para el futuro de estos estilos musicales, o de la cultura en general? Awful Records, al ser un sello tan dominante dentro de la industria, y procedente de Atlanta, le da esperanza a los ‘raritos’. Nosotros somos esos raritos marginados que se supone no debían triunfar, y por eso mismo lo hicimos. Hay muchos artistas asombrosos ahí afuera que se sienten fatal consigo mismos porque no encajan, o sienten que no pertenecen a ningún lugar, y a esos son a los que creo que inspiramos más. Puedes ser 100% auténtico y hacer las cosas a tu manera, y así marcar la diferencia. Conformarse simplemente no es una opción para algunos de nosotros, representamos a la gente que no tiene otra opción que hacer arte. ¿Prefieres fotografiar artistas o celebridades o trabajar en proyectos artísticos personales, como ‘Singles’? Prefiero el trabajo personal, sin duda. Fotografiar personas tal y como son es algo sumamente difícil para mí. Personalmente me encanta desnudar a los fotografiados de sus identidades y emplearlas como simple presencia humana, nada más, así que retratar a artistas y celebridades es un reto constante. Pero he estado trabajando en ello porque sé que es algo que me dará de comer en el futuro, y también me ayuda a tener dinero para realizar mis proyectos personales. ¿Cómo pueden nuestros lectores seguir tu trabajo? ¿Tienes algún proyecto o publicación en camino? Solo deben seguir mi Instagram y Twitter, allí suelo mantener a todo el mundo informado acerca de lo que estoy haciendo. Ahora mismo regreso a Atlanta para trabajar en un proyecto titulado ‘Slime’, no puedo revelar mucho más al respecto, solo debéis saber que es algo nuevo que jamás esperaríais de mí. ¿A dónde te gustaría ir ahora? Ahora mismo estoy en Boston, donde nací. Pronto iré a Atlanta por trabajo. Tal vez vaya a Miami para el Art Basel, y luego tengo una exposición de nuevo aquí, en Boston. Después puede que vaya a Los Ángeles, también tengo otra exposición en Toronto. Y el próximo año quiero pasar tiempo en Seattle y Londres.

When did you discover your interest for photography? Have you always known it was your thing? When I was 21 years old I discovered my passion for photography, now I’m 25. Before photography, basketball was my only true passion. It wasn’t until the year 2014 that I realized I could potentially earn a living making art. Now my life is devoted to creating and expressing myself in every possible way.

‘Eat Humans’ sounds bold and provocative. Why did you choose that artistic name and how does it relate to your stills? The name ‘Eat Humans’ was, oddly, the first thing that came to my mind when my friend, Brianna, convinced me to open a Twitter account years ago. I wasn’t even taking photographs at this time. I was living in Boston, with my father, because I got kicked out of my mom’s house after high school, since I wasn’t doing anything with my life. That was a dark and confusing period for me, so I came up with a name, which reflected that time. Honestly, I wanted my name to be strange, so that people wouldn’t follow me, because I wasn’t interested in social media back then. I just used to look at a few weird/dark Tumblr pages.

Some of your photographs have a dark, morbid, yet ironic tone in them. Where does this element come from? Anyone who knows me well, or has ever been in my presence, knows that I am a very easy going and kind person, but my photographs may suggest otherwise.

My art reflects a side of me that I don’t share with others. I don’t do drugs and I don’t drink, so my only escape/release is my artwork, which can often be difficult, because I can be extremely shy, and shooting people is actually quite difficult for me.

For you, what comes, the image or the idea? The image, always.

My brain moves way too fast to grasp any idea or concept for a shoot.

That explains why I don’t normally work in series. My photographs are like one big ongoing series as I continue to soul search every day.

I used to be insecure about my process of making art, but then I real-

ized we all work differently. Comparing yourself and your process to others is the worst thing anyone can do as an artist.

You also take pictures of objects and locations, like reality bites.

Would you describe yourself as a street photographer? Street photography was actually the first style of photography I was drawn to, so in a sense, yes. But I don’t think I fall under any particular genre of photography, which can be frustrating at times. This also stems back to my overactive brain. My interests have always been varied, so I have a few different styles. But as of late, I’ve just been traveling with my point, shooting the camera, taking photos as I go, so yes, as of late, I have been more of a street photographer.

You’re very active on social media, like twitter and Instagram.

Do you think that nowadays, for emerging artists, these kinds of platforms are the most important way to crash the scene? How do you link it to your work? Social media is tricky when it comes to sharing your artwork. My approach has always been to share my work from the beginning and let people follow my growth. My main goal as an artist is to inspire future generations to not be afraid to truly pursue their dreams, no matter their circumstances. But for some artists, like one of my best friends, Michael Thorpe, they like to build silently until they feel ready to share, something I respect tremendously, especially in this internet age, when instant fame is everyone’s goal.

How did you start shooting for Awful Records? Can you tell us the craziest story behind one of the images touring with them? It all really started due to my friendship with Ashley Romero (Awful Records photographer and Father’s girlfriend), she is one of my best friends and at the time was one of my only friends in the city. I was living in Woodstock/Acworth, Georgia, all the way up until April 2015. I would meet up with her and we’d hang out and talk about our

dreams as photographers and whatnot; she introduced me to everyone in Awful. At the time I wasn’t familiar with their music, I just really enjoyed them as people. Then, eventually, I started going to their shows and taking photos, and hung out with them all the time. Po was the one who officially asked me to be in the group as of January of 2015.

The craziest story by far was during the Cry $$$ Tour, at the infamous Oakland show. To make a super long story somewhat short, we got locked out of the van twice, one of them being my fault, which caused us to arrive at the venue an hour before the show was supposed to end.

People were already leaving because word got out that we weren’t coming, though Father tweeted that we were, so everyone was confused.

Carti wasn’t on the van with us at this time, so he made it to the show way before us and performed, and yeah… We showed up much later.

Then, somehow, someone who worked at the venue punched Gerry (Father’s manager), and all hell broke loose. It was bad, but hilarious now that I look back at it.

Tour? What was it like documenting that trip? The best and most dramatic month of my life. Before I left for the tour, I had a regular ass job that I couldn’t bare for one more day. So it was such a drastic change going from a 9 to 5 routine to touring the country with friends, having fans in every city. Every time I walked into the crowd to get a shot, there was a kid with a camera who looked up to me, and it was just so surreal at times. I was also going through a bad break up, so that added to the emotional ups and downs. But, overall, it was, honestly, the most fun I’ve ever had. I hope to go on more tours in the future.

Atlanta has been, arguably, the city with the strongest influence on musical urban genres, such as Hip-Hop and Soul. What does the emergence of new, creative acts, like Awful Records, mean for the future of these styles of music, or the culture in general? Awful Records, being as dominant as it is and coming from Atlanta, offers the

weirdos hope, basically. We’re the outcast weird kids who weren’t supposed to make it, and that’s why we did. There are so many amazing artists out there who feel terrible about themselves every day because they don’t fit in, or feel like they don’t belong anywhere, and those are the kids that I think we inspire the most. You can be 100% yourself and do things your way, and make a difference. Conforming just isn’t an option for some of us, and we represent the people who have no other choice but to make art.

Do you prefer shooting artists and celebrities or do you rather work on personal, artistic projects, like the “Singles” featured on your website? Personal work for sure. Shooting people as themselves is still extremely difficult for me. I personally love to strip the subjects of their identities and use them as a mere human presence for my work, so shooting other artists and celebrities is a constant challenge.

But I’ve been working on it, because I know it’ll pay off in the future, and it also helps me fund my future personal projects.

How can our readers keep up with your artwork? Also, are there any upcoming projects or publications that you would like to share with us? They just have to keep up with my Instagram and Twitter accounts. I usually keep everyone up to date on my next moves. Right now I’m headed back to Atlanta, to work on a project called “Slime”, I’m not going to give any more details about it, just know it’ll be something new you wouldn’t expect from me.

Where do you want to go to next? Right now I’m in Boston; I was born here. I’ll be heading back to Atlanta soon, to work on some stuff.

I also might go to Miami for Basel, then I have an art show back in Boston. After that I’ll probably go to LA, and then I have an art show in Toronto at some point. I also want to spend time in Seattle and London this year.

There are so many amazing artists out there who feel terrible about themselves every day because they don’t fit in, or feel like they don’t belong anywhere, and those are the kids that I think we inspire the most. We represent the people who have no other choice but to make art.

La obra de Francesca Woodman llega a Madrid “Lo real no me asusta; sólo lo que proviene de mi mente”. Francesca Woodman tenía más razón que un santo, no se lo podemos negar. Todos y cada uno de nosotros luchamos contra esa voz en nuestra cabeza que nos dice que no podemos hacerlo, que somos débiles, que el vacío se impondrá ante cualquier cosa. En nuestra mano está acallar esa voz gritando aún más fuerte. En el caso de Francesca, ese grito era la fotografía, disciplina con la que ha forjado su mito como una de las fotógrafas más importantes del S.XX, y eso que su período de creación comprende de los 13 a los 22 años y más de 800 fotografías, a través de las cuales intentamos buscar respuestas al enigma. Porque siempre tiene que haber uno. Cuando alguien muere joven, nos creemos con derecho a adentrarnos en las entrañas de su historia, a meternos en la mente de la persona para intentar racionalizarlo todo y satisfacer nuestra curiosidad. Pero, ¿por qué tenemos que explicar la obra de un artista como consecuencia de lo que le ha tocado vivir? Francesca decía que sus fotos dependían de su estado emocional, y que reflexionar sobre ese vínculo que estableció inconscientemente con su arte la hacía sentir muy bien. Como invencible, protegida en una zona de confort que ella misma había creado a golpe de click, y en el que podía jugar a ser como le diera la gana. También, que se fotografiaba a sí misma porque era la única persona que siempre estaba disponible. Ella ha sido la gran protagonista de su obra, aún habiendo contado con modelos en alguna ocasión. Poseía un halo de magnetismo cuyo encanto residía en la mezcla entre inocencia y oscuridad, algo que desconcierta al espectador pero que lo deja con ganas de ver más. Desnuda o vestida con ropa vintage como le gustaba, narcisista o vulnerable, oscura o alegre, la dualidad ha sido una constante en su obra. Ante el objetivo (siempre el suyo propio), se entregaba totalmente, abriéndose en canal a aquel que quisiera mirar. En su casa, el arte era la columna vertebral del eje familiar, por lo que no podían haber medias tintas: ante la cámara, en ese momento en que nadie mira, era ella misma explorando su relación con la realidad, con este mundo. Pero no solamente eso, era ella en un lugar en el espacio y tiempo: es curioso analizar la relación que establecía con los sitios en los que se fotografiaba, lugares que muchas veces parecían abandonados, deteriorados, caóticos, vacíos, y que dotaban al conjunto de una dosis de melancolía extrema. Además, jugando con la exposición, a veces su figura parecía fantasmagórica, y otra vez la dualidad, la de aparecer para desaparecer. Una ironía que hace justicia a la propia personalidad bromista y sarcástica que sus más allegados dicen que tenía. Por eso, sus fotos muchas veces han sido consideradas como una performance. Dicen, dicen, dicen. En la Historia del Arte existe la tendencia recurrente a sobre interpretar y a buscar el más difícil todavía para saciar la sed por saber más. Por descifrar, otra vez, el enigma. En este caso, pesan más las certezas: Francesca Woodman fue, es y será una artista única y un prodigio para su tiempo.

Su obra se ha convertido en atemporal y universal gracias al vínculo emocional que establece el espectador mirándola a los ojos, sintiendo en primera persona el peso de la existencia en medio del absoluto vacío. Ese es su verdadero legado: su capacidad para hacer sentir. Para estar, aún no estando presente.

The legacy of Francesca Woodman arrives to Madrid “Reality doesn’t scare me, only what’s inside of me does”. Francesca Woodman was absolutely right; it’s impossible for us to deny it. Each and every one of us has fought against those internal voices that tell us we are not enough, that we can’t do it, that we are weak, that emptiness will triumph. It depends on us to silence them by shouting louder. In Francesca’s situation, her shout came through photography, a discipline that turned her into one of the most important photographers of the 20th Century. Her creativity sprout started when she was 13 years old and finished when she was 22, leaving behind over 800 photographs, through which we try to decipher the enigma; because there has to be one. When someone dies young, we entitle ourselves to dig deep in their story, in their mind, in an attempt to rationalize everything and satisfy our curiosity. But, why do we have to understand the legacy of an artist as a consequence of his or her life events? Francesca used to say that her photographs relied on her emotional state, and that pondering about such connection she unconsciously established with her art, made her feel happy and at ease, as if she was invincible, protected in a comfort zone she built by clicking the shutter, where the rules were imposed by her. She also stated that she used to photograph herself because she was the only person that was always available. This made her the main protagonist of her works, although on some occasions she also worked with models. Francesca possessed a magnetic halo that exuded an allure composed by a blend of innocence and darkness, endowing her images with a trait that manages to leave the audience befuddled but wanting more. Naked or dressed up with vintage clothes, narcissistic or vulnerable, dark or joyful, duality was always present in her work. Before the lens (always her own), she gave herself away completely, in a sincere manner, opening her soul to anyone who cared to watch. In her house, the arts were a fundamental axis within the family dynamics; this helped her explore further her connection with photography. Every time she was in front of the camera, when no one else was looking, she was herself, exploring her relationship with reality, with this world. But it wasn’t just that, it was her entire presence in space and time: it’s curious to analyze the relationship she established with the places where she photographed herself, places that usually seemed abandoned, deteriorated, chaotic, empty, and that gave the final image a dose of acute melancholia. As well, by experimenting with multiple exposure, sometimes her physical body seemed phantasmagoric, and, again, duality present, appearing and disappearing, an irony that makes justice to the jester and sarcastic personality some of her relatives affirm she had. That’s why many of her photographs have been considered performances…

They affirm, they state and they say. In the rich history of the arts, there’s an overwhelming tendency to over-interpret and believe the improbable to satiate the thirst for knowing more, to decipher, once again, the enigma. In this precise scenario, certainties talk louder: Francesca Woodman was, is and will be a unique artist, a prodigy ahead of time. Her photographs are eternal and universal, thanks to the emotional bond that’s awaken in the audience every time someone looks into her eyes, witnessing in flesh the weight of existence and how hard it is to tolerate it when you are among absolute emptiness. That’s her true legacy: her capacity to make us feel, to be there without being present.

Eran los sesenta y aunque en la costa australiana era habitual ver a jóvenes dominar las olas con sus longboards, para los que venían de otras tierras aquello podía parecer una locura. Corría el tiempo de los Beatles, de la contracultura, de Martin Luther King y la guerra de Vietnam… había tensión y en las zonas costeras muchos se refugiaban subiéndose a una tabla, creando su propia revolución. Así lo hicieron John Witzig y sus amigos, entre quienes estaban Bob McTavish o Nat Young, impulsores de la Shortboard Revolution. Una nueva concepción del surf haría que pasaran de dominar la tabla a cabalgar las olas, y la pasión de Witzig por la fotografía le llevaría a documentar todo ese período. Publicó en importantes revistas de surf y editó la suya propia. Fue un período intenso, lleno de acontecimientos importantes, pero si tuviera que quedarse con algo, Witzig elegiría aquellas inmensas playas desérticas, alejadas de todo, que fotografiaba mientras la excitación de disfrutar del vacío le invadía.

Throughout the sixties it wasn’t unusual to see, along the Australian coastline, young men dominating the waves with their longboards. Regardless, for people of other lands, such a sight must have been a crazy spectacle. These were the years of The Beatles, the counterculture, Martin Luther King and The Vietnam War… tension was palpable everywhere and many sought for refuge climbing on top of a board, starting a revolution of their own. This is exactly what John Witzig and his friends did, among whom we can find Bob McTavish and Nat Young, two of the pioneers behind the Shortboard Revolution, a new conception that would make surfing evolve from dominating the board to riding the waves. Thanks to Witzig’s passion for photography, his role was no other than documenting it all in thousands of images, some of which got published in important surfing magazines; later he would even edit some himself. It was an intense period, filled with important events, but if he had to choose something, he would pick those immense deserted beaches astray from everything, the ones he photographed while such emptiness filled his heart with excitement.

Cuando empezaste a surfear y a tomar fotos, el surf no era un deporte extendido. De hecho, muy pocos lo practicaban. ¿Cómo te metiste en este mundo? Mi familia tenía una casa de campo en la costa al norte de Sydney, así que crecí pasando mucho tiempo en la playa… Yo continué surfeando mientras otras personas se dedicaron a practicar otros deportes o encontraron otros intereses. Tampoco disfrutaba de la escuela regimentada a la que asistía, así que la playa era mi escape. La gente empezó a surfear antes de que llegaran las surfboards que llamamos “Malibú”, a finales de los cincuenta, pero lo hacían sobre paddleboards huecos de madera contrachapada muy difíciles de controlar. Fue toda una revelación cuando llegaron las tablas más cortas en balsa y con quillas y fue entonces cuando me interesé por el surf de verdad.

Ahora es lo más normal del mundo ver a alguien cabalgar olas, pero en esa época la gente no estaba acostumbrada a ello. ¿Qué crees que pensaban de vosotros? Alrededor de las playas de los suburbios de Australia la gente estaba acostumbrada a ver surfers cabalgando olas, así que aunque el cambio que llegó con las nuevas tablas fue increíble para nosotros, para algún espectador que simplemente estaba observando, probablemente pasó desapercibido. Sin embargo, en los pueblos alrededor del país el surf sí era una novedad, recuerdo que mucha gente bajaba a la playa a vernos. Esto aumentó a medida que los surfers empezaron a viajar por el mundo en busca de olas. En muchos países no existía la tradición de surfear. Algunas veces pienso que las comunidades locales debían estar bastante sorprendidas, asombradas tal vez. ¿Crees que desde entonces ha cambiado mucho el surf y todo lo que le rodea? ¿Echas algo de menos de aquella época? El surf, sin lugar a dudas, se ha hecho más mainstream, y eso se nota en todos sus niveles. Pero así es, las cosas cambian… y no creo que todo lo que era bueno se haya perdido. A mi parecer, el espíritu sobrevive cuando un grupo de amigos encuentra olas en alguna playa casi vacía… y esto es algo que todavía puedes hacer en muchas partes del mundo. Extraño la sensación de descubrimiento y aventura que

formaba parte de todos los primeros viajes que realicé, explorando la costa australiana… Aún así, estoy seguro de que los individuos que encuentran las olas más extremas en los lugares más arriesgados todavía experimentan eso.

Entre tus amigos estaban futuras promesas del surf como Bob McTavish, Nat Young, George Greenough, David “Baddy” Treloar, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew o Wayne Lynch. ¿Podías imaginar que llegaríais tan lejos cada uno con lo vuestro? Mi carrera dentro del surf fue algo corta… de unos quince años, empezando a mediados de los sesenta. Ese fue el periodo durante el cual trabajé de manera constante para revistas de surf, muy involucrado. Después de eso tuve que empezar a ganar un poco más de dinero. Eso sí, hice una rica colección de amigos y conocidos dentro del surf. Muchos de los cuales aún conservo. Como grupo había mucha diversidad y talentos realmente únicos, así que su éxito no me sorprendió. El periodo que más disfruté fue durante la segunda mitad de los sesenta, cuando Bob McTavish, George Greenough y Nat Young inspiraron lo que más tarde sería la Shortboard Revolution. Fue una época emocionante y yo estaba en el epicentro. Como fotoperiodista, no te llega una oportunidad mejor que esa. ¿Podrías explicarnos la Shortboard Revolution y qué la desencadenó? ¿Cómo experimentaste dicho suceso? Existen varias historias sobre cómo se inició la Shortboard Revolution y quién debería recibir el crédito por ello. Yo observé muy de cerca lo que estaba sucediendo en Australia desde mediados del año 1966. Esa es la historia que puedo contar. Bob McTavish quería que las tablas para surfear de pie le permitiesen hacerlo en la parte crítica de la ola, como George Greenough lo hacía en su kneeboard, para así poder cabalgar la ola en vez de cabalgar la tabla. Nat Young estuvo involucrado desde el comienzo, y mucha de la experimentación se realizó en las olas del área de Noosa Heads, en Queensland. Es imposible subestimar el profundo efecto que esto tuvo en el surf. ¿En qué momento te diste cuenta de que la fotografía era tu pasión? ¿Cuál fue la primera fotografía de la que te sentiste orgulloso? En cierta manera estaba obsesionado con la fotografía y las revistas desde que era un adolescente, aunque tenía una colección de pasiones. Conocí a algunos de los mejores fotógrafos australianos de surf a comienzos de los sesenta, y no era algo que me pareciese muy misterioso, de hecho no lo es. Me aburría un poco estar parado en la playa con un teleobjetivo sobre un trípode, pero comencé a sacar suficientes buenas fotos como para continuar haciéndolo. En 1963 publiqué mi primera historia en Surfing World. Nunca me he cansado de que mi trabajo se publique. Creo que una foto de Midget Farrelly en el Palm Beach de Sydney, hecha en 1964, fue la primera imagen que tomé y pensé que era buena… todavía lo pienso.

Las cámaras de los años 60 y 70 no eran como las de ahora. ¿Cómo te las apañabas para acercarte tanto a los surfistas y que las imágenes salieran bien? ¿Qué cámara usabas? Mi primera cámara y teleobjetivos fueron baratos, algunos de segunda mano incluso. Poco a poco los fui cambiando por mejores, y en raras ocasiones las publicaciones me permitían utilizar su equipo, que era mejor que el mío (de hecho, solo sucedió una vez). Las revistas de surf en Australia durante esta época eran todo menos profesionales. Afortunadamente, nunca he considerado que la calidad de mis imágenes dependa de la calidad de la cámara con la cual esté trabajando. A mediados de los sesenta conseguí una Nikonos subacuática… no recuerdo cuándo exactamente. Era la única cámara acuática en ese momento que servía para fotografiar surf. Si te acercabas nadando lo suficiente, podías conseguir buenas imágenes. El lente fijo de 35mm que venía con el modelo original tenía mucha nitidez, además de ser gran angular, por lo que casi todo quedaba enfocado.

¿Qué opinas de la fotografía de surf en la actualidad? Creo que hoy lo mejor de la fotografía acuática es lo más impresionante de cualquier deporte. Es asombrosamente buena. Los fotógrafos son tan valientes… y algo locos supongo. Los admiro muchísimo.

Has viajado mucho en busca de olas. ¿Con qué playas te quedarías si tuvieses que elegir? Tengo muchas favoritas: Guéthary en Francia, Dos Coxos en Portugal, así que restrinjámoslo solo a Australia, porque para llegar allí desde la costa Este es toda una aventura. Cactus es un lugar con muchos recuerdos para mí. Mi hermano y su mujer vivieron allí durante los setenta; es uno de los bordes orientales de la Gran Bahía Australiana, en pleno sur del país. Es desértico, un ecosistema hermoso. Amo ese lugar.

Fuiste editor de revistas de surf como Sea Notes o Surfing International, y cofundador de Tracks Magazine. ¿Qué es lo que más te gustó de esta faceta como periodista? Lo que más me gustó fue ser editor, la manera en la que tienes la responsabilidad de crear todo el feeling de un número. Cuando miro las revistas que hice, son irregulares, pero algunas fueron exitosas creo yo.

Muchos de nosotros no teníamos ningún tipo de experiencia, así que hacíamos de todo: buscar a los anunciantes, escribir las historias, tomar las fotos, hacer el diseño y supervisar la impresión.

Era muy divertido.

El monotema de este número es EMPTY. ¿Te has sentido vacío en algún momento de tu carrera? Oh, claro que sí, simplemente agotado tras haber pasado la noche en vela para lograr enviar un número a la imprenta a tiempo o aquel terrible momento cuando algunos carretes, en los que tenías puestas tus esperanzas, no te daban nada. Pero prefiero interpretar vuestro monotema de otra manera… Estoy pensando en los line-ups vacíos que fotografié en los sesenta, hoy irrevocablemente inundados por las presión poblacional y el masivo crecimiento en el número de surfistas, que aún tienen el poder de excitar a cualquier surfer; ¡no hay una sola persona en ellos!

Surfing has certainly become mainstream… but it seems to me that the spirit survives when a few friends find waves on a mostly empty beach

When you first started surfing and taking pictures, surfing wasn’t a mainstream sport, actually, very few people practiced it. How did you get into it? My family had a holiday house on Sydney’s northern beaches, so I grew up spending a lot of time at the beach. I kept doing it when other people went on to other sports and interests.

I didn’t enjoy the rather regimented school that I went to, so the beach was an escape. People were riding waves before the boards that we call ‘Malibus’ arrived in the late 1950s, but that was on hollow plywood paddleboards that were difficult to control. The shorter balsa boards with fins were a revelation, and, when they arrived, that was when I really got interested.

Nowadays it’s quite common to see someone riding waves, but at the time you started, people were not used to it. What do you believe they were thinking about you? Around the suburban beaches in Australia, people were used to surfers riding waves, so even though the change that came with the new boards was dramatic to us, someone merely watching occasionally, might’ve thought it was just the same. It was different around the country towns though, I remember people coming down to watch us. That was emphasized as surfers began to travel the world searching for waves. In many countries there were no traditions of people riding waves. Sometimes I think that the local communities were quite surprised, amazed maybe.

Do you think that ever since, surfing, and the whole lifestyle that surrounds it, has changed a lot? What do you miss the most about then? Surfing has certainly become mainstream, and that affects every part of it.. It’s just change… and I don’t think that everything that was good about it has been lost. It seems to me that the spirit survives when a few friends find waves on a mostly empty beach… and you can still do that in most parts of the world. I miss the sense of discovery and adventure that was part of all of our early trips, exploring the Australian coast… but the individuals who find the most extreme waves in the most extreme places surely still experience that.

Among your friends there were a few future surfing stars, such as Bob McTavish, Nat Young, George Greenough, David “Baddy” Treloar, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew and Wayne Lynch. Did you imagine that all of you would get so far in your careers? My ‘career’ in surfing was fairly short… about 15 years from the mid1960s. That was the period while I was fairly consistently working for surfing magazines, so very involved. After that I really had to earn a bit more money. I made a rich collection of friends and acquaintances in surfing, that’s for sure. Most of the friends I still have. As a group they have great diversity, and some rare talents, so their success didn’t surprise me. The period I most enjoyed was the second half of the ’60s, when Bob McTavish, George Greenough and Nat Young inspired what would become known as the Shortboard Revolution. That was an exciting time and I was at the heart of it.

As a photojournalist, you don’t get a better opportunity than that.

Can you explain what the Shortboard Revolution was and what triggered it? How did you experience it? There are quite a few competing stories about the start of the Shortboard Revolution and who should get the credit for it. I observed closely what was happening in Australia from the middle of 1966. That’s the story that I can tell. Bob McTavish wanted to make stand-up boards that would allow him to surf in the critical part of the wave like George Greenough did on his kneeboard – to ride the wave rather than ride the board. Nat Young was involved from the start, and a lot of the experimentation was done on the fine waves of the Noosa Heads area in Queensland. Progress was rapid in 1967, and the length of boards dropped dramatically – from 9 foot 6 inches to 6 foot 6 inches.

I was at Honolua Bay on Maui in December 1967 when Nat and Bob showed what their radical V-bottom boards could do. Footage from that great swell made the finale of my brother Paul’s film, The Hot Generation, and woke the international world to what was happening in Australia. It’s impossible to understate the profound effect that this had on surfing.

At what point did you realize that photography was your passion?

Which was the first picture you felt really proud of? I was somewhat obsessed with photographs and magazines since my teenage years, but I had a collection of passions. I knew some of the better Australian surf photographers from the very early 1960s, and it didn’t look too mysterious to me… and it wasn’t. I got a bit bored standing on the beach with a long lens on a tripod, but started to get just enough okay shots to stick with it. I had my first story run in Surfing World in 1963. I never got sick of being published. I think that a picture of Midget Farrelly at Sydney’s Palm Beach, shot in 1964, was the first picture I took that I thought was probably ‘good’… and I still do.

The cameras from the 60s and 70s are not like the ones we have today. How did you manage to get that close to the surfers and make it work? What camera did you use? My first camera body and telephoto lens combinations were cheap, and some were second hand. Bit by bit I improved them, and on rare occasions a magazine let me use their (better) equipment - that only happened once actually.

Surfing magazines in Australia through these years were anything but professional. Fortunately I never thought that the quality of my pictures depended on the quality of the camera I was using. I got a Nikonos underwater camera in the mid-1960s… I don’t remember when exactly.

It was the only water camera around at the time that suited shooting surfing. I had a low success rate, but by swimming with it and getting in really close, you could get good pictures. The fixed 35 mm lens on the original model was also super-sharp, and with that wide-angle lens, pretty much everything was in focus.

What do you think about today’s surfing photography? I think that the best of today’s water photography is the most impressive of any sport.

It’s astonishingly good. The photographers are so courageous… halfcrazy I suppose. I admire them enormously.

You have traveled a lot chasing waves. If you had to choose a spot, which one would it be? I have a lot of favorites: Guéthary in France, Dos Coxos in Portugal, so let’s restrict it to Australia. Because just getting there from the east coast was an adventure, Cactus remains a place with great memories for me. My brother and his wife lived down there during the 1970s – it’s on the eastern edge of the Great Australian Bight in the very south of the country. It’s desert-like, and a very beautiful environment. I loved that place.

You were editor for different surfing magazines such as Sea Notes and Surfing International, and co-founded Tracks magazine. What did you like the most about this experience as a surfing journalist? I liked being editor best… the way you had the responsibility for creating the whole feel of an issue. When I look back over the magazines that I did, they’re uneven, but some still stand up as being successful I think.

Most of us had no training in anything, so we did everything: selling the ads, writing the stories, shooting the pictures, doing the layout and supervising the printing. It really was a lot of fun.

This issue’s title is EMPTY. Have you ever felt empty at some point in your career? Oh, of course, just drained when you’ve stayed up all night to get an issue to the printer on time, or that awful moment when a few rolls of film that you had hopes for have given you nothing. But I’d choose to interpret your theme a different way… I’m thinking of the empty lineups that I photographed in the 1960s, all now irrevocably swamped by the pressure of population and the massive growth in the numbers of surfers, yet still with the power to excite any surfer – there’s no one out!

ARCADI DE MIGUEL SÁNZ Arcadi de Miguel Sánz no se considera a sí mismo un fotógrafo, pero su trabajo dice otra cosa. Aunque empezó con este oficio hace relativamente poco, sus imágenes han llamado nuestra atención. En ellas es fácil encontrar un patín, claro… pero además una innegable sensación de vacío presente en el espacio negativo que conforma el encuadre. Radicado en Barcelona, tiene la suerte de vivir en una de las ciudades más importantes en cuanto al skate, y sabe aprovecharlo, ya sea sacando fotos o derrapando por el granito del MACBA. Hace poco tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con él para conocerlo mejor y descubrir que este tío vive su pasión montado sobre una tabla mientras mira a través del visor de su cámara. Adelante Arcadi.

Arcadi de Miguel Sanz doesn’t consider himself a photographer, but his work says otherwise. Though he started with this craft not long ago, his images managed to capture our attention. Among them it’s easy to find a skateboard, of course… but, as well, an undeniable feeling of emptiness present in the negative space that floats within the frame. Based in Barcelona, he is lucky enough to live in one of the most important cities regarding skateboarding, and he knows how to take advantage of this, either if it is shooting his friends land tricks or shredding over the granite floor of the MACBA. A few days ago we had the opportunity of talking with him and we got to know him better; we discovered his passion is found riding a skateboard while he looks through the viewfinder of his camera. ¿Cómo llegaron a tu vida el skateboarding y la fotografía? El skate llegó a los quince años, cuando un día un compañero de clase trajo el suyo, me lo dejó probar y me estuvo enseñando varios vídeos. Al instante decidí que quería saber más y tener el mío, entonces empezó la lucha para que mis padres me lo compraran. Desde entonces no hay día en que no me apetezca salir a la calle a patinar. La fotografía llegó más tarde. Siempre me había gustado pero nunca me había planteado salir expresamente con una idea en la cabeza para convertirla en fotografía, o ir por la calle y fijarme en cada rincón o rayo de luz en el que poder sacar una buena foto. Es casi enfermizo.

Además de la fotografía y el skate, ¿qué otras actividades o expresiones artísticas crees que han influido en tu trabajo? Mis padres, desde bien pequeño, me mantuvieron muy conectado con al arte, tanto a mí como a mis hermanas, ya que los dos son ilustradores. Cuando pude escoger qué estudiar me decanté enseguida por el diseño gráfico, hasta el día de hoy.

Supongo que todo este conjunto ha influido en mi modo de ver las cosas, pero sin duda lo que me despertó más las ganas de fotografiar fue el viajar y estar en contacto con la naturaleza.

Cuando estás fotografiando, ¿qué no debe faltar dentro de tu encuadre? Sin duda un patín o un buen paisaje de montaña, son las dos cosas que más me gusta capturar. ¿Qué propósitos, relacionados con tu carrera como fotógrafo, te has puesto para este año? No me considero específicamente fotógrafo, de momento es algo que quiero seguir experimentando, ya que cada vez me está gustando más. Mi propósito de momento es continuar aprendiendo, seguir trabajando en mi web y concretar otros proyectos que tengo entre manos.

Sueles hacer gran parte de tus fotografías de skate en Barcelona, ¿cómo le describirías la ciudad a otros skaters que nunca la han visitado? Les diría que ya están tardando en hacer las maletas (risas). Barcelona es increíble si eres skater, tienes mil spots muy bien comunicados, ya sea patinando o en metro. Es una de las capitales del skate ahora mismo.

¿Tienes alguna anécdota especial relacionada con el skateboarding que te haya sucedido aquí? La verdad es que bastantes, pero sin duda las más divertidas han sido de noche con mi amigo Cristian Bravo. Hubo una época en que íbamos a centros comerciales con el coche y nos esperábamos a que cerraran la puertas para patinar y hacer fotografías cuando estuviera vacío. Recuerdo en especial un día en el que unos guardias de seguridad nos detuvieron y nos tuvieron muchísimo rato cacheándonos, registrando el coche y haciéndonos un interrogatorio… muy exagerado todo. ¿A qué ciudad te gustaría ir a fotografiar? Sin duda haría las maletas ahora mismo para irme a cualquier rincón de Islandia. ¿Qué es lo más importante que te ha enseñado el skateboarding? La verdad es que muchas cosas: amistad, paciencia, disfrutar de las cosas pequeñas, esfuerzo, recompensa... ¿Cómo de importantes son las redes sociales en la difusión de tu trabajo? Ahora mismo son vitales, sobretodo Instagram, ya que es una red perfecta para darte a conocer y poder llegar a más gente.

El monotema de este número de la revista es EMPTY. ¿Qué te hace sentir vacío? No poder hacer lo que me gusta y no estar rodeado de la gente que me importa. ¿Cómo expresarías el vacío con una fotografía? La primera imagen que me viene a la cabeza es la de un sitio muy amplio y abandonado, algún lugar dónde haya habido vida y ya nadie lo recuerde.

How did skateboarding and photography come into your life? Skateboarding came into my life when I was 15 years old; one day a friend from school brought his, let me tried it and showed me some videos. Right away I wanted to learn more about it and have my own, leading to a battle with my parents so they would buy me one. Since then, I can’t spend one day without wanting to go outside and skate. Photography came later. I had always liked it but never before I had thought about going out, solely with an idea in mind to translate into a photograph; or going out walking the streets observing each corner or ray of light that could become a good snap.

Besides photography and skateboarding, are there any other activities that have had an influence on your work? My parents, since I was a little kid, reinforced my relationship with the arts, same thing with my sisters, since both are illustrators. When it was time to decide on what to major, I immediately chose Graphic Design, a decision I’m happy with. I guess this entire blend has had an influence in the way I see everything, but, without a doubt, what pushed me further towards photography was traveling and being in touch with nature.

When you are shooting, what cannot be missing inside your frame? Certainly a skateboard or a good mountain landscape, those are the things I enjoy capturing the most.

IF I THINK ABOUT EMPTINESS, THE FIRST IMAGE THAT COMES INTO MY MIND IS OF A WIDE, LARGE, ABANDONED SPACE, A PLACE THAT ONCE HELD LIFE BUT NOW NO ONE REMEMBERS.

Do you have any special anecdote related with skateboarding that happened in Barcelona? To be honest, I have plenty, but without a doubt, the best ones happened during the night with my friend Cristian Bravo. There was a period of time during which we used to go to different malls by car and wait for them to close, then we would get in to skate and take pictures while it was empty. I specially remember one day we were held by the security guards, we were there for a long time while they searched us, searched the car, interrogated us… it was all very exaggerated.

Which city in the world would you like to go and photograph? Without a doubt I would pack my bags right now and head towards any place in Iceland.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions regarding your photographic career? I don’t consider myself specifically a photographer; currently, it’s just something with which I want to keep on experimenting, since, each time, I enjoy the process further. My resolution, for now, is to keep on learning, working on my website and bring to fruition other projects that I have between hands.

What are the most important things skateboarding has taught you? Many things: friendship, patience, to enjoy the small things, effort, rewards…

Most of your skateboarding photographs are shot in Barcelona, how would you describe the city to skater that has never visited it? I would tell him or her not to waste more time and pack up (laughs).

Barcelona is amazing if you are a skater, there are countless well connected spots, either skating or by metro. Today, it’s one of the skateboarding capitals of the world.

This issue’s entitled EMPTY, what makes you feel empty? Not being able to do what I like and not being surrounded by the people that I care about.

Are social media an important channel for getting your work out there? Right now they are vital, especially Instagram, since it’s a perfect network to get your name out there and reach more people.

How would you express emptiness through a photograph? The first image that comes into my mind is of a wide, large, abandoned space, a place that once held life but now no one remembers.

DOSOUTO La belleza de la realidad

Creció en Santiago de Compostela, pero Los Ángeles es ahora su hogar y Cuba le ha robado el corazón. Para Andrea DoSouto, quedarse quieta no es una opción. La fotografía ha sido su primer amor, desde que después de mudarse a Barcelona, estudiara fotoperiodismo y se pasara tardes enteras en cuartos oscuros revelando carretes de 35mm. Quizás por eso hoy en día se define como fotógrafa documental, y es una característica que salta a la vista: sus imágenes son un testimonio gráfico de lo que ve allá donde va, pero sobre todo, ha sido los ojos de la comunidad skate, primero en Barcelona, y después en el resto del mundo a través de sus viajes como advocate de RVCA o en diversos proyectos.

El skate ha sido una de las constantes en su vida personal y profesional, un entorno que la ha visto crecer desde que tenía 19 años, pero su visión va mucho más allá: le fascina la gente y la manera en la que viven. Sus fotografías llevan implícito un halo de sensibilidad que se ha convertido en su sello y la delatan tras el objetivo, como cuando dispara a todas esas mujeres que la inspiran o esos lugares por los que siente debilidad. Inquieta, “patineta”, sincera, documentalista, con una absoluta predilección por el blanco y negro, ha desarrollado un don para ver la vida como una sucesión de imágenes. Al final, todo se reduce a lo mismo: cuando haces algo con pasión, tu trabajo habla (o grita) por sí solo.

She grew up in Santiago de Compostela but her home is in L.A., not to mention Cuba stole her heart. For Andrea DoSouto, staying still is not an option.

Photography became her first love from the moment she moved to Barcelona to study photojournalism; there she spent countless afternoons inside the dark room, developing rolls of 35mm film. That’s why, maybe today, she defines herself as a documentalist photographer: her images are the graphic evidence of what she sees wherever she goes, but, above all, she has taken on the responsibility of becoming the eyes of the skateboarding community, first in Barcelona, and then in the rest of the world, by traveling along RVCA as an advocate for the brand. Skateboarding has always been part of her life, both on the personal and professional level, an environment that has surrounded her ever since she was 19 years old, but her vision goes further: she is fascinated by people and the way in which they live. Her photographs posses an implicit sensibility that has become her personal trademark and reveal her presence behind the lens, like when she captures all the women that inspire her, or the places that she loves.

Restless, sincere, documentalist, with an absolute predilection for black and white, she has developed a special ability to see life as a sequence of images. At the end, it all comes down to the same principle: when you do something with passion, you work will talk –or shout- for itself.

¿Cómo te describirías a ti misma, como fotógrafa profesional, como fotógrafa de skate, documentalista o algo completamente diferente? Por lo general digo que soy documentalista, pero luego siempre hay un silencio, así que termino dando más detalles y explico que las contraculturas, así como lo es el skateboarding, son algunos de los temas en los que he trabajado durante mi vida.

Parece como si pasaras mucho tiempo en el “verdadero” Los Ángeles, en lugares como Inglewood, Fairfax o Western Avenue, con tíos locales como Spoety o el skater Olan Prenatt. ¿Fue un cambio cultural muy fuerte cambiar España por L.A.? ¿Cómo afectó tu habilidad para desarrollar vínculos con personas en esas comunidades? Bueno, sí… de alguna manera no me tomó mucho tiempo encontrar a las personas adecuadas con quienes pasar el rato; al fin y al cabo el skateboarding es como una gran familia internacional.

Las diferencias entre España y Los Ángeles son enormes, los códigos y el comportamiento cultural son muy diferentes, así que me tuve que adaptar a eso, tuve que afrontar mucho machismo, clasismo y racismo; la falta de un buen sistema educacional y una cultura sin valores hicieron que fuese realmente duro para mí a veces, es por eso que elijo con cuidado con quién relacionarme.

Publicaste muchas de tus fotografías de skateboarding en blanco y negro, aunque muchas de ellas son digitales. ¿De dónde viene tu predilección por las imágenes monocromáticas? Yo estudié fotoperiodismo con una cámara de 35mm, pasando largas horas en el cuarto oscuro. Cuando terminé la universidad no sabía nada acerca de lo digital; si apenas ese año tuve mi primer ordenador. Además, no me gustan los colores en la fotografía digital. Hay un sentido de la composición que solo puede ser alcanzado, bajo mi perspectiva, a través de la simplicidad y el poder de la monocromía.

Los viajes también parecen ser un elemento central en tu fotografía. Has estado en Ciudad de México, Brasil, Berlín y Barcelona, solo por nombrar algunos lugares. ¿Cómo influye en tu fotografía aquello que ves en la calle? Influye en mí y cambia mi perspectiva, y eso se ve en mi trabajo. Me llaman la atención las personas y la manera en la que viven, lo que es importante para ellos y su cultura, es algo que me ayuda a abrir mis ojos y mi mente y le da forma a mi fotografía y a lo que quiero comunicar a través de ella. ¿Cuáles son para ti las mayores diferencias entre realizar trabajo comercial y hacer retratos o proyectos personales? Los cuales son, por cierto, igual de impresionantes. Muchas gracias. La mayor diferencia es la presión que existe de hacer feliz al cliente con los resultados, pero en cuanto a mi estilo, no cambia mucho. Yo necesito conectar con lo que estoy haciendo, o con quien estoy fotografiando, incluso si es un modelo, debo conectar a nivel humano. Es muy difícil para mí seguir realizando mi trabajo u obtener los resultados si no siento esto, es por eso que siempre intento tener algo que decir cuando están haciendo el casting para algún proyecto en específico; me gusta ser parte de la decisión.

La energía al trabajar y la ética son también muy importantes para mí.

Hablando de trabajo comercial, tienes una relación muy cercana con RVCA; haz realizado para ellos tanto editoriales como colaboraciones para colecciones de ropa. ¿Cómo describirías tu vínculo con la marca y la manera en la cual ésta refleja tu identidad? Creo que la marca me entiende y aprecia mi manera genuina de ser y de hacer, permitiéndome tener suficiente espacio para ser yo misma y sentirme cómoda. Cuando no estás trabajando en tus proyectos fotográficos, ¿cómo te gusta pasar el tiempo? ¿Tienes algún hobby o talento escondido que te gustaría compartir con nosotros? Me encanta cocinar para mis amigos, hacer collage… Me gusta ir a los lugares underground para ver espectáculos de jazz. Me encanta hablar con extraños al azar, aunque también me fascina jugar al manitas y arreglarlo todo en casa.

Tus imágenes ofrecen una mirada holística sobre toda una generación y la juventud de hoy en día. ¿Crees que esta generación tienen algún objetivo como movimiento social? Es difícil decirlo, esta generación está dividida y confundida, tanto los que son conscientes como los inconscientes; estamos en el punto más alto del confort y la comodidad en la historia, pero el enemigo ha cambiado su máscara y los problemas siguen a la orden del día. Creo que esta generación está en una búsqueda de entenderse a sí misma y su verdadero valor ante una sociedad que les dice que nunca serán suficiente, que nunca tendrán suficiente. Tienes dos opciones: rebelarte o aceptar, yo veo los dos perfiles constantemente.

Eres una de las pocas mujeres que trabajan en la fotografía de skate. ¿Cómo te sientes al respecto? ¿Fue difícil hacerte un lugar?

Me siento muy cómoda con ello porque fue un proceso bastante natural para mí, puesto que crecí entre chicos. Probablemente he hecho que más gente se sienta incómoda de como yo me siento. Creo que a primera vista es difícil ganarse el respeto como profesional o no ser juzgado, definitivamente mucho más difícil en los Estados Unidos que en Europa, pues la mujer está bastante oprimida aquí, todavía tienen mucho que lograr en términos de igualdad. Pero también he visto a estos tíos crecer, muchos de ellos son parte de mi familia, y como mujer siempre he sido muy cariñosa y protectora; así mismo, diez años de hacer algo con amor y pasión hablan por sí solos. Lo más controversial que he hecho fue quedarme. ¿Tienes algún consejo o palabras de aliento para los fotógrafos que están intentando tener éxito en su carrera profesional? No voy a mentiros, son tiempos difíciles para ser fotógrafo y vivir de ello, así que si decidís dedicar vuestra vida a ello, hacedlo por las razones adecuadas, hacedlo porque llena vuestro corazón y os hace felices, porque necesitáis comunicar o expresar algo. Creed en ello, que no sabéis por qué, pero os sigue llamando, puede que sea vuestro talento. No lo hagáis por llamar la atención o ser aceptados. Y nunca jamás perdáis vuestra ética de trabajo. ¿Cómo interpretas el vacío en fotografía y en la vida? Si interpreto el vacío en la fotografía como el espacio negativo, diría que es casi o más importante que el propio sujeto o situación fotografiada. Pues lo enfatiza y dirige nuestra atención. Diría que es casi como el silencio en una conversación. En el momento adecuado, puede intensificar lo que se está tratando de explicar o dejar el espacio para que el oyente absorba dicha información. En la vida, el vacío lo puedo interpretar de muchas maneras, en el lado negativo (el vacío del alma) es esa sensación como de hambre insaciable, esa sensación que te da la vida cuando algo se te va y deja tu existencia sin sentido. Puede ser una persona querida, una pasión no ejercida o interrumpida, el abuso o la exposición al abuso y maltrato. Es lo que existe cuando ya no te queda nada, cuando se apago la ultima voluntad de lucha y la ultima llama de amor en tu corazón. En el lado positivo (el vacío mental), sería la ausencia del pensamiento que tanto nos hace sufrir o nos produce tanta ansiedad, sería el estado en el que conseguimos apagar esa voz que nos manda todo el tiempo y ser conscientes de nuestra existencia física y espiritual.

How would you describe yourself as a professional photographer: as a skate photographer, a documentalist, or something completely different? I normally just say I’m a documentalist, but there is always a silence after that, so I end up going further into details and most likely explain that subcultures, such as skateboarding, are some of my main themes.

When you’re not working on your photographic projects how do you like to spend your time? Do you have any hidden hobbies or talents that you could tell us about? I love to cook for friends, do collage… I like to go to underground venues to see jazz shows. I love to talk with strangers randomly, but, above everything, I love to fix and play handyman around the house.

It seems that you spend a lot of time in the “real” Los Angeles, in places like Inglewood, Fairfax, or Western Ave, with locals like Spoety or skateboarder Olan Prenatt. Was it a big cultural adjustment moving from Spain to L.A.? How did it affect, if at all, your ability to form bonds with people in those communities?

Well, yeah… somehow it didn’t take me a long time to find some right people to hang out with, real recognize real they say, and in the end skateboarding is just like a big family, a big international family. The difference between Spain and L.A. is massive, the codes and cultural behavior is really different, so I had to adapt to that. I had to deal with even more machismo, classism and racism; the lack of a good educational system and a culture of non-values made it really hard for me at times, but that’s why I just choose wisely who to hang out with.

Your images are like an insight of a whole generation and today’s youth. Do you think that this generation has a goal as a social movement? It’s hard to tell, this generation is divided and confused, both the aware and the unaware. We are on the highest state of comfort of all time, but the enemy has changed his mask and the issues are still on the top of the counter; I think this generation is on the hunt to understand themselves and their real value in a society that tells them they will never be enough or have enough. You can rebel or you can accept, I see both profiles constantly.

You publish a lot of your skateboarding photographs in black and white, even though many of them are digital. Where does your preference for monochromatic images come from? I studied photojournalism with a 35mm camera and long hours in the dark room. When I finished university I knew nothing about digital, I barely got my first computer that year, and in general I don’t like the colors in digital photography. It’s a sense of composition that can just be achieved, under my perspective, through the simplicity and power of monochrome.

Traveling seems to also be a major element in your photography.

You have previously shot in places like Mexico City, Brazil, Berlin, and Barcelona, just to name a few. How does what you see on the road influence your photography? It influences me and changes my perspective, thus it has a resonance within my work. I’m fascinated by people and by the way they live, what is important to them and their culture, it opens my eyes and my mind, and shapes my photography and what I want to communicate through it.

What do you see as the biggest differences between shooting commercial work and your personal photography? Which, by the way, is equally impressive. Thank you so much. Of course, the pressure of making the client happy with the results, but when it comes to my style of shooting, it doesn’t change much. I need to connect with what I’m doing, or with whom I’m shooting, even if it’s a model, I need to connect in a human level. It’s really hard for me to keep shooting, or to get the job done, if I don’t feel that, hence why I try to have a word to say during the casting process for any specific project, I like to be part of the decision. Work energy and ethic are really important to me.

Speaking of commercial work, you’ve closely aligned yourself with the RVCA brand, through editorials and even clothing collaborations. How do you feel the RVCA brand image reflects your identity? I think they get me and appreciate my genuine way of being or doing, leaving me a lot of space to be myself and feel comfortable.

I think the combination of fields among which RVCA moves, or Pat’s vision when he started, speak to me on a profound level, it’s a ‘ family feeling’ community of artists, riders, fighters… it’s an ode to independent thinking.

You are one of the few women in the skate photography scene.

How do you feel about that? Was it difficult to feel accepted? I feel totally comfortable with it because it was pretty natural to me, since I grew up surrounded by boys. I have probably made more people feel uncomfortable than I have felt myself. I think, at first sight, it’s harder to be respected as a professional or not to be judged, definitely harder in the States than it was in Europe, since women are pretty oppressed out here, they have a long way to go for equality. But, at some point, you have seen some of these boys grow up, a lot of them are part of my family now, and as a woman I have always been really nurturing. At the same time, 10 years of doing something with love and passion speak for themselves. The most controversial thing I did was to stick around.

Do you have any words of advice or encouragement for other photographers that are looking to pursue a professional career? I’m not gonna lie, it is a hard time to be a photographer and to make a living out of it, so if you choose to dedicate your life to the craft, do it for the right reasons, do it because it fulfills your heart and makes you happy, because you have the need to communicate or express something. Believe in it, in that thing you don’t know why, keeps on calling you, because it might be your talent. Don’t do it for attention or acceptance. And never ever lose your work ethic.

How do you understand emptiness, both in life and photography? If I understand emptiness within photography as negative space, I would say that it is as or more important than the subject matter itself or the depicted situation, since it emphasizes and directs our attention.

I would say its role is similar to the one silence has in a conversation.

In the right moment, a pause can intensify whatever you are trying to say or explain, leaving a space for the person who is listening to absorb the information. In life, I can interpret emptiness in many ways; on the negative side -soul emptiness-, it would be when you get a feeling that resembles an insatiable hunger, like the sensation you get in life when you lose something and your existence becomes irrelevant. It can be losing someone you care for, not pursuing a passion or suffering some kind of abuse and mistreatment. Is what arises when there’s nothing left, when the last will for fighting fades away along with the love in your heart. On the positive side –mental emptiness-, it would be the absence of the thoughts that cause us so much pain and make us feel anxious, it would be the state in which we attain to silence the voice that is constantly telling us what to do, and we become conscious of our own physical and spiritual existence.

We tend to focus so much in getting what we want that, more often than not, we forget about the things that we truly need. That’s why Australian artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers uses abstract patterns and narratives to create illustrations and murals, in an attempt to reconstruct his own reality. Through his pieces he manages to arise dormant feelings within the audience by exploring ideas such as the feeling of place and belonging, the constant struggle against adversity and the everlasting human pursuit of happiness. ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? Al empezar una pieza nueva, ¿prefieres trabajar en una idea específica o arrancas desde cero con la mente en blanco? Mi proceso es constante. Siempre intento llevar un cuaderno de bocetos conmigo, así puedo escribir ideas, conceptos, pedazos de conversaciones importantes cuando surgen. No es algo forzado, se trata de estar listo para documentar una idea cuando sucede. También hago bocetos rápidos y desaliñados de composiciones y formas a menudo inspirados por las narrativas que escribo.

Es en el momento en que siento algo fuerte o que destaca sobre las demás ideas, cuando puedo empezar una pintura o un dibujo final.

Así que nunca me pregunto, ‘¿qué voy a pintar?’. Recurro a las páginas de mi cuaderno en busca de una idea o para ver un hilo narrativo en el cual pueda combinar muchas.

Tus ilustraciones a menudo incluyen personajes nómadas que parecen estar en movimiento o en una aventura, y las temáticas de la vida, la muerte y la supervivencia también aparecen de manera recurrente. ¿Qué podemos aprender de esto? Los elementos naturales son una característica esencial en tu trabajo. ¿Se trata de un anhelo por una conexión perdida con la naturaleza o tiene más que ver con un estilo de vida? Un poco las dos cosas; la naturaleza está cambiando y desapareciendo tan rápido que intento rendirle homenaje y recordarle a la gente, a mi manera, su poder. Es más grande que nuestra existencia personal y que nuestros sueños, sin ella estaríamos muertos. También, obviamente, es un símbolo de la vida, y yo disfruto al hacerle referencia en mi trabajo como pequeños momentos de esperanza. La naturaleza por encima del asfalto.

Otro elemento recurrente son los dibujos de pequeñas casas. Por sí solas, todas juntas e, incluso, como si fueran las maletas de los personajes. ¿Qué nos cuentan? ¿Tienen algo que ver con el sentido de pertenencia? Sí, me gusta explorar ideas relacionadas con el sentido de lugar o la falta de éste. Me parece extraño cuando la gente está sumamente asentada en un solo lugar, porque yo me siento muy inquieto y curioso. Me gusta incluir narrativas de lugares y viajes dentro de mi arte, ya que parece una búsqueda humana constante.

Utilizas Instagram como un portafolio personal. Algunas personas creen que las redes sociales llenan nuestras vidas, mientras que otros afirman que nos hacen sentir vacíos. ¿Cuál es tu posición al respecto? Yo creo que son una herramienta muy poderosa, además puede llegar a ser muy inspirador saber lo que la gente en todo el mundo, e incluso en el espacio, está haciendo. Yo las utilizo principalmente para seguir a artistas y creativos de cuyo trabajo disfruto. También pueden ser tóxicas y tomarse por completo la vida de

Me siento pleno cuando estoy viajando y experimentando cosas nuevas. De momento estoy interesado en ir a lugares con increíbles entornos naturales. Quiero ver la naturaleza mientras aún está aquí.

Tu trabajo está altamente cargado de composiciones con patrones y figuras geométricas. ¿De dónde sacas las inspiración para llevarlas a cabo? Siempre he sido bastante compulsivo con mis dibujos y pinturas, y los patrones me han interesado de manera natural.

Encuentro inspiración para mis patrones en todas partes, desde la naturaleza hasta en el entorno construido.

También has publicado cuatro libros infantiles ilustrados. ¿Qué puedes ofrecerle a las generaciones futuras con tus dibujos? ¿Cómo surgieron estos proyectos? Me gusta el reto de trabajar en libros infantiles, es un formato bastante único y poderoso. I feel most fulfilled when I am traveling and experiencing new things.

At the moment, I am most interested in going to places with amazing natural environments. I want to see nature while it’s still here.

How is your creative process? When you begin a new piece, do you work on a specific idea or do you start from scratch with an empty mind? My process is constant. I always try to have a sketchbook with me so I can write down ideas, concepts, bits of conversation I think are important - when they arise. I don’t force this; it’s about being ready to document the idea when it happens. I also sketch a lot of fast, messy compositions and forms that may have been inspired by the narratives I have written down. When I feel something is strong or standing out above the other ideas, then it might be the start of a painting or final drawing. So I don’t really ever think, ‘what will I paint?’ I reference the pages of my sketchbooks for one idea or to see a thread and combine many.

You say art is open to interpretation, and we agree with that.

But we also understand it as a means of self-expression. What do your illustrations say about yourself? My artwork is the filter for my life experience. It is the only thing that feels truly natural to me and I can’t imagine not drawing or painting; it sounds strange, but the busier my hands are the better I feel about the complications of the world.

Your illustrations often include nomad-esque characters that seem to be on the move or on an adventure, plus the themes of life, death and survival are also recurrent within your works.

What can we learn from them? I’m trying to show aspects of human problem solving and life. Showing the narrative of failure along side success. Ideas around looking for solutions when the ability or skills required to make a change for the better may not exist - so the result usually comes about in the characters building elaborate inefficient machines and cities, which just add to the chaos. Ordered Chaos.

Life on Earth.

Natural elements are an essential feature in your work. Is it because you are trying to convey a longing for a lost connection with nature or has it more to do with a lifestyle? A little bit of both; I feel like nature is changing and disappearing so fast that I’m trying to honor it and remind people, in my own way, of its power. It’s bigger than our personal existence and dreams, and without it we will be gone. It is also, obviously, a symbol for life, and I enjoy referencing it in my artwork as small moments of hope. Nature over concrete.

Another recurrent element is the drawings of little houses. Little houses on their own, crowds of little houses and even little houses as the character’s backpacks. What do they tell us? Do they have something to do with the sense of belonging? Yes, I like exploring ideas of sense of place or lack of. I find it strange when people are extremely settled into one place, I feel so restless and curious. I like including narratives of place and journey into my artwork, as it seems to be a constant human pursuit.

You use Instagram as a personal portfolio. Some people believe social media fulfill our lives, others think they make us feel empty. What’s your stance on the matter? I think they are a very powerful tool and can be very inspiring to see what people all over the world, and sometimes in space, are doing. I mostly use them for following artists and creative people whose work I enjoy. They can also be toxic and can take over people’s lives. I much prefer real life.

Though it is entertaining to see someone take the same photo of themselves in front of a landmark over and over again. That’s pretty good.

This issue’s title is EMPTY. We all seek for fulfillment in our lives to avoid feeling empty. What would be fulfilling for you? I feel most fulfilled when I am traveling and experiencing new things. At the moment, I am most interested in going to places with amazing natural environments. I want to see nature while it’s still here.

Your work is heavily packed with patterned compositions and geometric shapes. From where do you get your inspiration? I’ve always been quite compulsive with my drawing and painting, and patterns have always naturally been something I’m interested with.

I find inspiration for patterns everywhere, from nature to the built environment.

You have also published four illustrated children’s books. What can you offer to the future generations through your drawings?

How did those projects come about? I like the challenge of working on children’s books; it’s a very unique and powerful format. I like that I can place concepts or ideas into such a wide demographic of households and start small mental revolutions. These projects started when my publisher (Fremantle Press) saw my work from one of my exhibitions and invited me to work on a story written by author Meg McKinlay. I liked the story and agreed to work on my first book in 2011. This has since lead to me writing and illustrating my own books with Fremantle Press.

You’ve been involved in a huge number of large-scale public projects across the world and painted many wall installations internationally. What do you like about this specific art form?

I think this medium is amazing on many levels. It’s like having an adventure. You have logistical problems to solve while painting large public works (access, building features like windows, weather, time etc.). You can be very playful with composition and with the narrative specific to each location and site history. You are engaging every possible demographic that happens to walk past or seeks out the work. It creates dialogue and connection and it can change the feeling about the area of the city where it’s created in. The scale is also ultimate freedom; you move your whole body and use large rollers and brushes. You cannot paint five-storey buildings inside a gallery. You also get to force people that are not interested in art to think about art or a particular concept. We are constantly being bombarded with advertising in our life, so large-scale public murals and installations are great revolutions, claiming creativity back for the people that live around and in that space.

You’re a full time artist. What does Kyle Hughes-Odgers do when he’s not painting? I like to travel and seek out interesting nature adventures.

Tell us about your future projects. What do you have in mind? My next children’s book, ‘One Thousand Trees’, is coming out in Australia and New Zealand in June. Then, my next solo show in Australia is in September and there are a few large-scale public art projects to be installed in the coming months. Also, my first baby will be born in May and I still haven’t worked out what to name them…busy year!

LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY INVENTÓ EL REGGAE Y DIOS LE AMA

Lee “Scratch” Perry no aparenta los 71 años que está por cumplir. Su cuerpo, mente y voz aún tienen la fuerza del mismo hombre joven que se inventó el reggae a finales de los sesenta y cambió para siempre la escena musical a nivel mundial. Es difícil determinar los verdaderos orígenes de algo tan importante como el reggae, especialmente si además tenemos en cuenta que hay movimientos culturales y sociales que lo rodean e influyeron en su concepción. Aun así, Perry ha sido enfático al decir que él se inventó este género y se lo regaló a Bob Marley.

Así es él, un tío que nunca se va por las ramas y siempre dice lo que piensa, tal vez es por eso que se mantiene tan bien. “Yo obro bien con la gente que me ama. Y a aquellos que me odian les hago mal.” No hay punto intermedio en el discurso de este hombre, quien en 1968 conoció el éxito con su tema People Funny Boy, con el cual empezaría a marcar las características del reggae y lo llevarían a convertirse en uno de los productores más inventivos de la época. “Mi música es mi confort, mi camino hacia delante, la razón por la cual vine a este mundo”, y eso se nota, durante la conversación que tuvimos, la cual se vio marcada por su fuerte acento jamaicano, cada respuesta terminaba en canción, con juegos de palabras ingeniosos, que demuestran lo despierta que está la mente de este precursor. Fue su inventiva detrás de las consolas lo que lo llevó a abrir su propio estudio discográfico, llamado The Black Ark, donde trabajó junto a otras leyendas como Bob Marley y Max Romeo. Fue en este lugar donde su estilo se desarrolló por completo, marcado por su carácter extravagante y abundante energía. “Claro que soy mágico, si mi música me la dio el gran maestro mágico, él me brindó todas las herramientas que necesitaba”. Durante

casi una década Perry compuso en su estudio algunos de los temas más recordados en la historia del reggae, hasta que en 1978, presa del estrés e influencias externas no deseadas, decidió quemar The Black Ark y reducirlo a cenizas. “Recuerdo que empecé a beber ron, a beber vino, a beber alcohol, me volví perezoso y perdí la cabeza… Entonces el diablo vino y me dijo, ‘Yo sé quién eres, eres un alcohólico, eres un drogadicto, eres un presumido…’ entonces lo dejé”. En ese momento la vida de Perry se encontraba vacía, lo que llevó a que su carrera musical se viese estancada, debido en parte a su excesivo consumo de alcohol. No fue sino hasta finales de los ochenta, cuando decidió dejar de beber, que se volvió a encontrar con el éxito. A partir de entonces su carrera tomó un segundo aire, que lo llevó a trabajar con los Bestie Boys en la canción Dr. Lee PhD en 1998 y ganar el Grammy a Mejor Álbum de Reggae en el 2004. Aunque dejó de beber alcohol, y ha afirmado algunas veces que también dejó la marihuana, en muchas de sus canciones, la sigue elogiando, “La ganja es majestad imperial, el rey de reyes y el señor de señores. (Cantando) Vengo con mucha fuerza, yah man, vengo muy fuerte, yah man, con Dios a mi derecha, yah man, la música bajo mis pies, yah man, el diablo bajo mi ritmo, porque el diablo jamás me vencerá en esta realidad (risas)”. En los últimos años Perry se ha mantenido muy activo, lanzando varios álbumes tanto en solitario como en colaboraciones con artistas como Keith Richards, Moby y George Clinton. “La vida es genial, sin ella estarías muerto.

La vida es inmortal e imparcial. La vida es para siempre, así que trata tu vida bien y trata a tu mujer bien, así tu vida te amará y tu mujer te amará. Acepta la verdad, sé feliz y esparce la felicidad”.

Lee “Scratch” Perry looks much younger than the 71 he is about to be, and he knows it. His body, mind and voice still carry the strength of the young man who invented reggae by the end of the sixties, changing forever, the global music scene. It’s difficult to determine the true origins of something as big as reggae, especially if we have into account the cultural and social movements that surround it and were determinant for its conception. Even though, Perry has been empathic to affirm he invented the genre and gave it to Bob Marley as a gift. That’s just how this guy rolls, direct, always speaking his mind; that might be the key to aging so well –or not aging at all. “I do good to the people who love me. And to the people who hate me I do bad.” There’s no in-between with this man, who in 1968 met success thanks to the song People Funny Boy; a cornerstone that shaped what reggae would sound like, and which distinguished Perry as one of the most inventive producers in the world. “My music is my comfort. Why I come forth, why I come to Earth,” and this is very clear; throughout our conversation, which was marked by his strong Jamaican accent, every answer ended with a song, as he improvised ingenious lyrics that were nothing but the proof of how sharp his mind is. His originality behind the controls led him to open his own recording studio, The Black Ark, where he worked side by side with legends such as Bob Marley and Max Romeo. It was in this place where his style fully developed, defined by his extravagant character and overwhelming energy. “Yes, I am magic, my music is magic, my music was given to me by the great magic master, he gave me all the tools I needed.”

For almost a decade, Perry produced in his studio some of the most

important reggae songs in history, like Return of Django, along his band, The Upsetters, until one day in 1978, when, driven mad by stress and unwanted external influences, he burned The Black Ark to the ground. “I remember when I started to drink rum, I started to drink wine, and started to drink alcohol, and get crazy and get lazy, I almost lose my wife and lose my life. And then devil came and said, ‘I know who you are, you are an alcoholic, you are a drug addict, you are cocky…’” That period in Perry’s life was empty, and derailed his artistic career, due, partially, to his alcohol abuse. It wasn’t until the final years of the eighties, when he decided to stop drinking, that he found success again. Since then his has be unstoppable, recording a song with The Beastie Boys, Dr. Lee PhD, in 1998, and winning the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2004 for Jamaican E.T. Though he stopped drinking alcohol and has stated a few times that he also quit smoking marihuana, in many of his songs he still embraces it.

“Ganja is the imperial majesty, the king of kings and the lord of lords.

(Singing) I am coming very strong, yah man, I’m coming super strong, yah man, with God in my right arm, yah man, the music under my feet, yah man, the devil under my beat, cause the devil will never beat me in this reality (laughs)”. During the last few years Perry has kept himself busy, releasing various albums, both in solitary and with other musicians such as Keith Richards, Moby and George Clinton.

BACKYARD SURF Planchando el mediterráneo con maestría

Todo es mejor hecho a mano, por más que la tecnología avance, jamás se podrá equiparar con el oficio del hombre, y eso es algo que Jägermeister tiene claro. Hace poco, la marca alemana se unió a BackYard Surf, dos hermanos de Murcia que se dedican a crear y reparar tablas de surf, con el propósito de hacernos entender este concepto. La idea: resaltar y comparar la elaboración artesanal de Jägermeister con la fabricación de una tabla de surf. En los dos procesos hay atención a los detalles, pasión por el oficio y un legado artesanal que proviene de un vínculo familiar. El resultado: una hermosa tabla round tail, single fin de 6’2”, laminada en resina tintada verde con un pin line naranja, que presentaron en una fiesta por todo lo alto en Onac, donde además de beber los ya famosos Ginger Deer, pudimos ver en exclusiva el vídeo que nos dio a conocer todo el proceso tras esta unión, y que después de Barcelona también se presentó en Sopelana, Valencia y Málaga. A fin de cuentas, una pieza tan única como la receta de Jägermeister, está creada con el mismo cuidado y dedicación. Al habla, los chicos de BackYard Surf.

Everything is better when it’s handmade, it doesn’t matter how far along technology has taken us, it will never overcome the human crafts, and that’s something Jägermeister understands thoroughly. Not long ago, the German brand decided to team up with BackYard Surf - two brothers from Murcia, Spain, who make and repair surfboards-, in order to help us understand this concept. The idea: to highlight and compare the elaboration process behind Jägermeister by making a surfboard, and like this emphasize how both procedures pay close attention to the detail, and where the passion for the craft and artisan legacy are paramount. The result: a beautiful 6’2” round tail surfboard laminated with green tinted resin and an orange pin line, which was presented in Barcelona during an amazing event at Onac, where, besides enjoying the already famous Ginger Deers, we had the opportunity of being the first ones to see the short-length video that showcased the whole process behind this communion. The board was also presented in Sopelana, Valencia and Malaga, because, at the end of the day, a unique piece such as the JägerSurfBoard, rare as the recipe of Jägermeister, crafted with the same care and dedication, deserves to be paraded. That’s why today, on the mic, we have the guys from BackYard Surf.

CUANDO EMPEZAMOS A SURFEAR TENÍAMOS UNA TABLA FINÍSIMA Y MUY ESTRECHA, POR LO QUE NOS COSTABA MUCHO COGER OLAS EN EL MEDITERRÁNEO, ASÍ QUE DECIDIMOS HACERNOS UNA, AHÍ EMPEZÓ TODO.

Sois dos hermanos que hacéis y reparáis tablas de surf, ¿qué os inspiró a querer aprender este oficio?

Cuando empezamos a surfear teníamos una tabla finísima y muy estrecha, por lo que nos costaba mucho coger olas en el Mediterráneo, así que decidimos hacernos una, ahí empezó todo. ¿Quién os enseño o cómo habéis aprendido a ser shapers? Cuando no tienes maestro, la única forma de aprender es con un buen libro, probando y fallando.

Cada shaper suele tener un estilo o ciertas características que diferencian su trabajo con respecto al de los demás. Por ejemplo hay shapers que solo trabajan con madera mientras que otros solo hacen modelos de los años sesenta. ¿Cuál es el estilo o las características detrás de las tablas de BackYard Surf? Nosotros no tenemos un estilo aún, somos jóvenes y tenemos que probar cosas, aunque hemos laminado mucho con resina tintada. ¿Qué es lo que más os gusta de ser shapers? Poder probar nosotros mismos nuestras tablas.

Hoy en día, con la proliferación de la producción en masa, ¿cómo veis el presente y el futuro de las tablas de surf hechas a mano y por consiguiente el oficio de ser shaper? Cada día, en el mundo, y también en el surf en particular, vemos a más gente concienciada con el consumo local, pero luego llegas a la playa casi todo el mundo lleva corchopanes.

¿Cómo veis la escena del surf en España? Es muy difícil valorar la escena del surf español ya que los últimos años nos hemos movido poco, pero en nuestra zona cada vez hay más gente surfeando, y está muy bien que aprendamos a disfrutar de la playa y el mar en invierno, que hagamos deporte…pero es una pena la poca cultura de surf que se ve en los picos y playas. ¿Cómo surgió la oportunidad de hacer una tabla con Jägermeister? Conocimos al equipo de Jägermeister en el festival SOS de Murcia, les comentamos que fabricábamos tablas de forma artesanal y viendo algunos de nuestros trabajos decidimos hacer este proyecto, en el que se compara la elaboración artesanal de Jägermeister con la fabricación de una tabla de surf, de forma también artesanal.

Explicadnos las características de la JägerSurfBoard.

Es un 6’ 2’’ x 22’’ 2 ½’’, round tail, single fin; tiene una buena remada que te permite coger la ola en una posición que no sea muy crítica. Está laminada en resina tintada verde con un pin line naranja. ¿Qué es lo que a vosotros más os g usta de Jägermeister? Que cuente con gente pequeña como nosotros para este tipo de proyectos. ¿Qué es lo siguiente para BackYard Surf? Mañana hay olas, ¡así que mucho surf!

WHEN WE STARTED SURFING WE HAD THIS VERY THIN BOARD, VERY NARROW, WHICH MADE IT HARD FOR US TO RIDE WAVES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, SO HE DECIDED TO MAKE ONE OURSELVES, THAT’S HOW IT ALL STARTED.

So you are two brothers that make and repair surfboards, what motivated you to learn this craft?

When we started surfing we had this very thin board, very narrow, which made it hard for us to ride waves in the Mediterranean, so he decided to make one ourselves, that’s how it all started.

Who taught you or how did you learn to be shapers?

When you don’t have any one to teach you, the only way to learn is with a good book and through trial and improvement .

Each shaper has a particular style or certain characteristics that differentiate his or her work. For example, some shapers only work with wood, while others only make seventies’ models. Which style or characteristics set BackYard Surf apart from the rest? We don’t have a unique style quiet yet; we are still young and have plenty of things to try out, though we have laminated many boards with tinted resin.

What do you like the most about being shapers?

Being able to try our own surfboards, Nowadays, due to mass production, how do you reckon will be the future of handmade surfboards and the craft of being a shaper? Every day, all around the world, and within the surfing community in particular, we see more and more people aware about local consumption, but then, you get to the beach and everywhere you see, crappy blanks.

What do you think about the surf ing scene in Spain? It’s hard to make such an assessment since in the past few years we haven’t traveled much; nonetheless, around our area every time there are more and more people surfing. We think it’s good that we learn how to enjoy the ocean and the beach during the winter, that we exercise… though it’s a shame the lack of surfing culture you can witness at the different point breaks and beaches.

How did the opportunity of making a surf board with Jägermeister arise? We met the Jägermeister team during the SOS Festival in Murcia and told them that we do handmade surf boards. After they saw some of our boards we decided to come together and work on this project, where the elaboration process of Jägermeister is compared to that of making a surfboard, both artisan.

Explain to us the characteristics of the JägerSurfBoard.

It’s a 6’2” x 22” ½”, round tail, single fin. It’s very good when paddling since it allows you to catch the wave in a not too critical position. It’s laminated with green tinted resin and it has an orange pin line.

What do you like the most about Jägermeister?

That it counts with small entrepreneurs like us for projects like this.

What’s next for BackYard Surf? The waves will be firing tomorrow, so a lot of surfing!

JÄGERMEISTER PRESENTA LA #JÄGERSURFBOARD CON BACKYARD SURF T: FELIPE DUARTE

Jägermeister siempre se ha caracterizado por ser diferente. Su sabor inigualable, compuesto por 56 ingredientes, lo ha llevado a ser el licor alemán más vendido; No obstante, desde sus inicios se ha mantenido fiel a su esencia, donde el cuidado, la pasión y el buen hacer son indispensables, con un producto de la más alta calidad como resultado. Hace poco la marca alemana decidió embarcarse en una nueva aventura: representar su identidad en una tabla de surf, teniendo en mente y resaltando los conceptos ya mencionados. El resultado se ha materializado en una tabla de surf: la #JägerSurfBoard, hecha a mano de 6’ 2’’ x 22’’ 2 ½’’, single fin, round tail, laminada en resina tintada verde y con un pin line naranja. Una verdadera obra de arte que busca rememorar los años setenta y ablandarle el corazón a todos los nostálgicos de lo vintage. Los encargados de hacer este sueño realidad fueron los chicos de BackYard Surf, quienes han creado esta tabla con sus propias manos.

La historia de la #JägerSurfBoard nace en Murcia, donde los hermanos Tomas la crearon, siguiendo los mismos parámetros en cuanto a cuidado al detalle y ejecución sutil que tiene la elaboración de la famosa bebida. De allí, la #JägerSurfBoard inició su gira rumbo a su primer destino, Barcelona. En la ciudad Condal fue presentada al público en un evento por todo lo alto en el bar Onac, donde todos los invitados pudieron disfrutar de los ya famosos cócteles Ginger Deer, además de ver en exclusiva el vídeo donde se muestra todo el proceso de creación de la tabla, y se explica cómo, gracias a su forma y dimensiones, es perfecta para poder hacer giros redondos y coger mucha velocidad en olas con poco potencial. De Barcelona, la #JägerSurfBoard partió rumbo a Valencia, donde fue recibida en el Mediterranean Surf School. Allí no faltó la música, la cual vino de la mano de The Basement Soundsystem. Luego pasó por Málaga para finalmente cerrar la gira en Sopelana, donde el equipo de Jägermeister se despidió de los chicos de BackYard Surf con la satisfacción de haber hecho algo único.

The guys in charge of making this dream a reality go under the name of BackYard Surf, and they created this unique surfboard with their own hands.

The story behind the #JägerSurfBoard starts in Murcia, where the Tomas brothers built it in the BackYard Surf workshop, following the same parameters regarding the eye for detail and passion present in the elaboration of Jägermeister. From there, the #JärgerSurfBoard began its tour first visiting Barcelona. There it was presented to an audience, eager to discover the new project of Jägermeister, at the Onac bar, in a mind-blowing event where the assistants could enjoy of the delicious Ginger Deer cocktails while a video displayed the whole process behind the creation of the board, which, thanks to its size and dimensions, is perfect to do round swerves and gain high speed in low-potential waves.

From Barcelona the #JägerSurfBoard went on to Valencia, where it was well received at the Mediterranean Surf School, in an event where the music was in charge of The Basement Soundsystem. Then it visited Malaga, to finally finish the tour at Sopelana, there, the Jägermeister team said goodbye to the guys of BackYard Surf with the satisfaction of having done something unique, as unique as Jägermeister.

Un par de días después del Skype con Eva Villazala, la directora de la revista que tienes entre las manos, amanecemos en pleno barrio de Kreuzberg, una extraña e increíble mezcla de carteles callejeros, tipografías, músicas, grafitis, arte, skate, diseño gráfico, tiendas molonas, moda y restaurantes de todos los sitios del mundo. Nuestra visita coincide con la ola de frío glacial que azota el norte de Europa, de modo que ir pegando lingotazos a una petaca se convierte en la única forma viable de mantener nuestra temperatura corporal para poder seguir pateando Berlín. ¡Hay que salir cueste lo que cueste! ¡¿Cuántas grandes obras han sido firmadas aquí?! ¡¿Cuántos han yacido sobre este suelo?! Es curioso pensar en la cantidad de acontecimientos cruciales que han tenido lugar en estas calles. No sé, hay un aroma especial en cada rincón que incita a reflexionar. Muros; guerra; miedo...

El traqueteo del tren acaba por pasar desapercibido cuando hay tantas cosas que mirar por la ventana. Desde la vías se divisan un sinfin de fachadas tristes, parques solitarios y una acera desolada en cuyos arcenes descansa un reguero infinito de nieve marrón.

- ¡Mira! Otro spot que sería la hostia si no estuviese congelado.

- ¿Dónde coño patina aquí la peña?

- Buah, esta época es dura tío, o tiras de indoor o estás jodido.

- Espera, creo que acaban de anunciar nuestra parada. ¿Has entendido algo?

- Ni una puta palabra, pero bájate por si acaso.

Una vez en el Raw Market nos despojamos de la bufanda y la introversión de las calles porque el recinto está a rebosar de peña con patines y cerveza. El Raw es una especie de mercado plagado de puestos de compraventa en el que no queda un sólo ladrillo por pintar. Estos días acoge los European Skateboard Awards, una de las actividades programadas por el Bright que no deja de ser una excusa para, además de premiar el trabajo de los mejores (vídeo, foto, marca, tienda...), juntar a un montón de peña de todos los puntos de Europa con el skate como nexo de unión. Todo es uno. No hay grupos dentro del grupo. ¡Menuda maraña de gente!

Unos skaters polacos nos cuentan lo duro que es patinar en su país. Apenas tienen sitios cubiertos y el invierno es casi un drama. Por supuesto las autoridades sudan de su problema porque el patín allí no significa nada. Otros chavales rumanos se quejan de lo jodido que es conseguir cierto material, sobre todo de alguna marca yanki, ya que si compran por internet el gobierno les saca los higadillos a impuestos. La gente de Berlín, en cambio, lo tiene mucho más fácil ya que se trata de una ciudad mucho más abierta en la que el skate ya es toda una industria. La verdad que se me hace extraño ver unas diferencias tan marcadas entre la gente de un mismo continente. El surf no nos tiene acostumbrados a este tipo de desigualdades entre los de un mismo ámbito.

Cuando voy a por otra birra, observo que la gente no para de moverse y de hablar. Todo dios ríe, grita y gesticula.

Lo mismo sucede en el Bright: unos pintando una pared, otros serigrafiando tablas, Steve Caballero que pasa y sonríe. Una afeitando a uno. Uno tatuando a una. Marcas y más marcas nuevas y, por si fuera poco, estanterías llenas de revistas por todos lados y escaparates con cosas increíbles a un precio de risa.

En realidad no dejan de suceder cosas en Berlín. Es de esos sitios en los que no sabes qué te vas a encontrar a la vuelta de la esquina. Todo se mueve tan aprisa que la propia ciudad acaba siendo un estímulo que te absorbe y no te suelta.... Demasiado frenético para un tío de pueblo que se pasa las tardes tranquilamente en el mar. Aunque bien pensado, de eso iba precisamente Back Real. De improvisar y descubrir. De tener la sensación de que ha transcurrido un mes cuando en realidad sólo llevas una semana en ese sitio.

Ya en el avión de vuelta, y por primera vez en lo que va de semana, tengo dos horas y media por delante para descalzarme y no hacer nada. Pienso guardar mi cámara y mi libreta. Ni mapas ni notas mentales. Quiero ser el mayor zombie del vuelo. No voy a pensar en nada... ¿Alguien será tan tonto como para comprarse una colonia aquí arriba? Este sandwich tiene mala pinta hasta en la foto.

En caso de pérdida de presión...

Al traspasar la barrera de nubes que cubre Berlín el cielo se degrada en colores suaves como la llama de una cerilla. Ojalá tuviese mi cámara aquí. Esto no se me puede olvidar.

A couple days after we Skype with Eva Villazala, director of the magazine you are reading right now, we woke up in the middle of the Kreuzberg borough in Berlin, an area composed of a strange and amazing mixture of street posters, typographies, music, graffiti, art, skateboarding, graphic design, cool stores, fashion and restaurants from all over the world. Our visit was seconded by a harsh cold wave that slapped the north of Europe all throughout January, such situation forced us to keep our mouths really close to our hip flasks, in an attempt to maintain our corporal temperature, thus keep on rocking Berlin; ‘cause you know… we had to hit the streets, no matter what! How many master pieces were signed here?! How many perished on this soil?! It’s curious to think about all the important events that have taken place among these streets. I don’t know, but there’s a special fragrance in each corner that makes you ponder. Walls; war; fear…

The ‘choo choo’ noise of the train goes unnoticed when you have so many things to look at through the window.

From the rails it’s easy to see an endless number of sad façades, lonely parks and desolate sidewalks upon which there’s an infinite mess of brown snow.

- Look! Another awesome spot if it wasn’t because it’s frozen.

- In the winter is tough dude, you either go indoors or you’re fucked.

- Wait… I think they just announced our stop. Did you understand that?

- Not a fucking word… let’s get down, just in case.

Once we were at the Raw Market we let go of our scarves and the introversion brought upon us by the streets. The place was packed with people skating and drinking beer, this is definitely where we parked our car. The Raw is some kind of market filled with small trading shops where all the bricks have been covered with graffiti.

During our stay, it was hosting the European Skateboard Awards, one of the main activities scheduled for the Bright, which at the end of the day, is nothing more than a excuse to - besides awarding the achievements of the best: video, photograph, brand, shop…- bring together a huge crowd from all over Europe that shares one thing in common: skateboarding. All as one. There are no groups within the group. What an intricate web of individuals!

Some Polish skaters told us how hard it is to skate in their country. They barely have indoor spaces and when

the winter arrives it brings along the drama. Of course the authorities don’t give a damn, skateboarding doesn’t mean a thing to them. Other Rumanian guys were complaining about how hard it is to find certain equipment in their country, specially if it is from an American brand, and if they buy things online the government fucks them by charging way too much in taxes. For the people in Berlin, the situation is different, easier, since it is a globalized city where skateboarding is a big industry. To be honest, I find it strange to see such strong differences among people from the same continent. Surfing doesn’t have such marked contrasts between one place and another.

As I was heading for another beer, I noticed that the people were moving and talking relentlessly. Every god laughs, shouts and gesticulates, even at the Bright: a crew was painting a wall somewhere, others were silkscreening skateboards, Steve Caballero walked pass and smiled. There was a dude shaving another, one getting a tattoo. Brands and more new brands and, if that was not enough, shelves with magazines everywhere and displays with amazing stuff for a laughable price.

In Berlin there’s always something happening. It’s one of those places that will surprise you every day. It all goes by so fast that the city itself becomes a stimulus that takes hold of you to never let go… A place maybe too frenetic for countryside guy that usually spends his afternoons staring at the ocean. Nonetheless, that’s s exactly what Black Real is about: improvising and discovering, having the feeling that you’ve been in a place for a month, when it’s actually only been a week.

On the plane back home, for the first time in a week, I had two hours and a half ahead of me, during which I could take off my shoes and do nothing. So I put my camera and notepad away, it wasn’t time neither for maps or mental notes, and let myself go into a trance, as I intended to become the biggest zombie on the sky.

My mind was blank, nothing… Who is so stupid to buy a perfume up here? Damn, that sandwich looks bad, even on paper. In case of decompression, an air mask will…

After crossing the thick layer of clouds that hovers above Berlin, the sky broke into a wide palette of smooth pastel colors shining like the flame of a recently lit match. I wish I had my camera with me. I cannot forget this sight.

Arnette Surfcity Festival 2017

LOS ANTÓNIMOS SE COMPLEMENTAN En la naturaleza del ser humano viene implícita la contradicción. Somos una suma de conceptos que chocan y se enfrentan entre sí. Y aunque el resultado a veces es el más absoluto de los caos, este conflicto es la base de nuestra esencia, esa mezcla entre luces y sombras, de emoción y razón, de introspección y expresión. Son dos conceptos que no son excluyentes, sino que conviven en armonía por un bien mayor, el de hacernos funcionar sin que perdamos la cabeza. Agua de Surf entendió esta jugosa dualidad en su momento, y nos la llevan mostrando año tras año en cada edición del ARNETTE SURFCITY Festival, y ya van seis. Seis años en los que crean un espacio en el que dos conceptos antagónicos se miran cara a cara y se retroalimentan el uno del otro. Surf vs ciudad, mar vs asfalto, naturaleza vs hombre. Pero esto no se queda aquí, porque durante el festival no solamente mostrarán esta co-relación, sino que reflexionarán sobre las opciones para que estos dos actores puedan complementarse y convivir lo más pacíficamente posible. A través de las múltiples actividades programadas para el primer sábado de primavera, podremos saborear el agua salada rodeados de cemento. La exposición We Are Antonyms reflexionará sobre la contraposición de estos dos conceptos a través de la voz de artistas de renombre a nivel nacional e internacional a los que este año se incorporan los dibujos irreverentes de Pato Conde, la dualidad de Lycien Csery, el testimonio gráfico de Ivory Serra, la mirada intimista de Núria Rius, los recuerdos analógicos de Gabriel Novis, la geometría de las ilustraciones de Dani Station o el objetivo de Elli Thor que nos llevará de viaje a los confines del fin del mundo, entre muchísimos otros. Otro plato fuerte serán las 8 horas de conciertos de la mano de Jägermeister, con Bayvaves, The Parrots y JMII, que se suman a los cabeza de cartel del festival, The Wheels, Playback Maracas, Der Panther y alguna que otra sorpresa más. Y para completar la inmersión sensorial, la instalación SkateCity de G-Shock fusionará skate y surf, el Surfcity Market nos descubrirá las marcas y proyectos de emprendedores que surfean la ola con pasión y podrás pegarte un buen recorrido por las instalaciones artísticas de Kiwi Bravo, Ford EcoSport y Dreamsea Surf Camp. Y como siempre, habrá lugar para el conocimiento a través del workshop de Peta Surfboards y el Shaper Room, donde los chicos de Leman estarán trabajando duro para conseguir la excelencia. Quien diga que no se puede surfear en Barcelona, está muy equivocado: solo hay que alejarse del ruido de la jungla urbana y esperar a la ola perfecta.

Within our human nature, contradiction is an implicit characteristic. We are the sum of a variety of concepts that collide with each other. And even though the result sometimes is the furthermost chaos, among such conflict our true essence resides, between that mixture of lights and shadows, emotion and reason, introspection and expression. All concepts that don’t exclude each other, but, instead, coexist in harmony for the sake of a greater good: making us function without losing our heads. Agua de Surf understood this long ago, and they have been showcasing it for us year after year, in each new edition of the ARNETTE SURFCITY Festival; this is the sixth one. Six years in which they create a space where two antagonistic ideas come together, face to face, and nurture each other. Surf vs. city, ocean vs. concrete, nature vs. man. But this goes further, because during the festival they are not only going to represent this co-relationship, but they will also reflect upon the available options so that both subjects can take care of each other and coincide peacefully. Through the multiple scheduled activities for the first Saturday of Spring, we will be able to savor the salty water while we are surrounded by concrete. The exhibition We Are Antonyms will reflect upon the counter position of these two concepts by the means of the works of different renowned national and international artists. This year we will have the opportunity of enjoying of the irreverent drawings made by Pato Conde, the duality behind the pieces by Lycien Csery, the graphic testimony of Ivory Serra, the intimate view point of Nuria Rius, the analog memories of Gabriel Novis, the geometric illustrations by Dani Station and the journeys across the world done by Elli Thor, among many others. The second main event will be the 8 hours of non-stop music brought by Jägermeister, with performances by Baywaves, The Parrots and JMII, who will join the main acts by The Wheels, Playback Maracas, Der Panther and, maybe, one or two extra surprises. To complete this sensorial immersion, the SkateCity installation developed by G-Shock will blend skateboarding and surfing, and the Surfcity Market will present us with the best brands and entrepreneur projects that are passionately surfing the industrial wave. The artistic set ups made by Kiwi Bravo, Ford EcoSport and Dreamsea Surf Camp are another must see of the festival. As usual, there will also be a space dedicated to knowledge, with the Peta Surfboards workshop at the Shaper Room, where the Lema team will be striving to reach excellence. Whoever says there’s no surfing in Barcelona, it’s nothing but wrong: all you have to do is to get away from the noise of the urban jungle and wait for the perfect wave.
