“Creating an informal network of domestic spaces or oases with an industrial drosscape created by an underpriviliged residential community”

We are putting forward a proposal towards the government for a new master plan that can be implemented to the existing warehouses to stitch the residential and workspaces more closely. Encouraging more social activities by creating social spaces that can be used by workers similarly to the covert informal oases created throughout Industrial Area 11.

The focus of our research was alleyways within industrial areas. We studied covert oases within these alleyways. We discovered an informal network of domestic spaces or oases with an industrial drosscape created by an underprivileged residential community. We found vibrant oases made up of partitions, edges, unconstrained storage space, domestic and spontaneous landscape, provisional architecture, ordinance, and tailored lounges.

Our architectural intent is to bring forward these covert oases and create a lively network within the workspaces and warehouses. The oases we found generally went unnoticed and happened occasionally depending on availability of resources. The housing situation looks as if it was more of an afterthought, most of them being an addition and extension of the warehouses, blurring the line between work and home. Even though the workers are an essential part of the industrial community. Our goal is to encourage and provoke the creation of more oases and bring alive the alleyways. Making the alleyways more vibrant. We chose Industrial Zone 11 as it has less residential spaces for workers to live in. On our site we added a network that connects the four industrial warehouses. Within the network there are four social gathering spaces, a market, a garden, a cafe and a sports complex. The four spaces are accessed through a single axis that goes through the warehouses. The housing is brought out into the facade, making it less hidden.

Dhabia Al Shamsi

This studio project was to design a film and media center in the area of Al Ghafiya in Sharjah. Exploring ideas such as national heritage, identity, social issues, history, art, culture via the medium of film, storytelling and moving images. In doing so, it acts as a dynamic and important new cultural facility as well as an opportunity for public gathering throughout the calendar year. It is a place of art. Dialogue. Cultural exchange. Outdoor gathering. Season. Family. Diversity.

Japanese Joinery

Year: 2022

Team: Lamia Al Tayyari

This project focuses on the study of Japanese joinery, I have decided to study one in particular; dai-mochi-tsugi. The purpose of this project is to study the details of a particular joint and then create a larger scale project using the joints, in which I have designed a traditional Japanese tea house.

Reviving Beirut

This project aims to revitalise the neighbourhood and plaza, catalysing market activity and rekindling the ritual of market. The designs creates a permeable space that allows the public to freely cross through the market with no physical barriers. The greenhouse aims to unify architecture and landscape to revitalise and preserve the sense of community that was generated by the traditional market on a more urban scale.

Through its design, I intended to create a permeable space that allows the public to freely cross through the market with no physical barriers; emulating the conditions of the city of Beirut, creating the condition of a city within a city in the project; a pedestrian-centric design.

This Beirut project unifies architecture and landscape to revitalise and preserve the sense of community that was generated by the traditional market on a more urban scale. Creating a balance that conserves tradition and culture while bringing new life into the city.

05 | Weaved Lifeforms

Year: 2024

This thesis explores the transformative potential of repurposing barren lands within the United Arab Emirates as well as throughout the Gulf region into sustainable symbiotic projects, reviving these once abandoned and forgotten landscapes. The project aims to analyse the synergy between architecture and agriculture in order to create a harmonius ecosystem within it that maximises productivity.
