God’s call to Moses makes it clear: his disability did not hinder the purpose God had for him. In the same way, La Mesa Academy honors the truth that every person has a place, a voice and a role in God’s work just the way that they are.
This program caught my interest because throughout all my life, I've sought a different point of view on how to deal with diverse cultures in ministry and the business world. (...) This program will expand our minds to see the world in a new way.
I love La Mesa Academy because it’s a place where every student can imagine themselves as future leaders in God’s ministries.

During the Spring 2024 semester, Antonio “Tony” Eduardo Alonso (pictured left) was promoted to a tenured professorship at Candler School of Theology.
Tony Alonso's promotion to tenured associate professor at Candler School of Theology marks a significant milestone: he is the first Latino professor to receive tenure in over 50 years. This achievement honors the legacy of pioneering figures in theological education like Justo González (pictured right), a Cuban-American scholar, and Wesley de Souza, whose work helped pave the way for Latinx theologians.
Alonso, now the Aquinas Associate Professor of Theology and Culture and director of Catholic Studies, exemplifies the growing diversity in theological education. His promotion is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of a broader shift toward inclusivity and visibility for Latinx voices. Alonso’s recognition echoes the importance of "presencia," a strategy of solidarity and intentional relationships that fosters transformative dialogue within marginalized communities.
Alonso’s connection to González, whom he calls "the father of Latinx theology in the U.S.," is a profound part of his journey. González, the first tenured Latinx professor at Candler, recalls challenges and minimal recognition when he received tenure in the 1970s. His work, however, laid the foundation for future generations of Latinx theologians. Now, Alonso continues this legacy, highlighting the growing acknowledgment of Latinx contributions in theology.
With his tenure, Alonso affirms that Latinx voices are essential to reshaping theological discourse. As a Latin Grammy-nominated composer and scholar, Alonso bridges liturgical theology and cultural studies, emphasizing the importance of representation and diversity in the classroom.
