SURF CITY USA® BELIEVES IN MAKING ITS COASTLINE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE

HUNTINGTON BEACH WELCOMES all visitors across all abilities throughout the destination with easily accessible beaches, an adaptive surf-program and more experiences tailored for the accessible community.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND

Located just north of the Pier, the All-Inclusive Playground at the Beach features equipment designed to promote interactive play among children of all abilities. The entire play area is also surfaced with rubber as approved by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. 913 Pacific Coast Hwy., 714-536-5486, huntingtonbeachca.gov

Beach Wheelchairs

Accessible Rv Camping

Bolsa Chica Campground between Seapoint Street and Warner Avenue provides six RV campsites with water and electrical hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, dining options, and convenient access to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Campsites become available each day at 8 a.m. for a period of six months in advance. 17851 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, 714-846-3460, parks.ca.gov

MOBI-MATS

First installed in May 2021, Mobi-Mats at Huntington City Beach (6th Street between 1st and Huntington Streets) lay on the sand and stretch all the way down to the water’s edge during high tide providing convenient shoreline access. Made of 100 percent recycled water bottles, the mats prevent wheeled devices from sinking into the sand and make the operation of wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers much easier. The city is looking to add more Mobi-mats beyond Huntington City Beach in the near future.

Paved Beach Paths

The Huntington Beach Bike Trail is a mostly-flat, multi-use paved pathway that stretches nearly 8.5 miles along the coastline from Bolsa Chica to Huntington Sta te Beach with additional wide-paved paths stretching from it. Shade structures with accessible features are at the foot of both Newland and Brookhurst Streets, and designated accessible parking and restrooms are located nearby.

Make Arrangements

To reserve a beach wheelchair, we recommend calling ahead. Huntington State Beach: 714 536-1454; Huntington City Beach: 714-536-5281; Bolsa Chica State Beach: 714-846-3460

Equipped with large, wide wheels that are able to roll across the sand without sinking, beach wheelchairs are available to rent for free. Personal identification may have to be provided during the rental period, and while some wheelchairs can be reserved ahead of time, others are first-come, first-served. The beach wheelchairs also typically require users to be accompanied by someone pushing them.

Former professional surfer Rocky McKinnon of McKinnon Surf & SUP Lessons set out to make surfing a more inclusive sport so those with physical disabilities are able to experience the thrill of catching waves. McKinnon designed a 14-foot chair board specifically for adaptive surfing, and currently offers hour-long tandem surfing or chair boarding lessons. Both versions are accompanied by safety professionals. mckinnonsurfandsuplessons.com
