Family support service calls for volunteers A not for profit charity committed to promoting the welfare of families with young children under five years requires more volunteers to meet demand for its services.

Home-Start Newcastle, a New Lambton based service that co-ordinates the recruitment, training and matching of volunteers with families has more young families requesting support than there are volunteers available.

“Home-Start volunteers are normally parents themselves. They offer their time freely to support families as they move towards increased confidence and independence” said Michelle McDonell CEO of Home-Start Australia Inc. “Our volunteers offer a listening ear, friendship and practical help. This support can help greatly in the prevention of family crisis and breakdown.”

Michelle added.

Twilight market for Lambton Park

Lambton will come alive to engage and excite all the senses with Five Senses Twilight Market at Lambton Park on Sunday 26th March. Organiser of the event, Ali Cooke of A La Mode Events, initially came to event through her charity fundraising work.

“I coordinated my first event in 2006 as a thank you to the Leukaemia Foundation who had provided my family with accomodation and support whilst our mum was undergoing a bone marrow transplant and treatment for cancer at Westmead Hospital.” Ali told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

“We have an awesome market scene developing locally, but I felt there was more of a focus on artisan and vintage type markets, that we were lacking not just evening markets but a place where everyone can showcase what they are passionate about.”

“Five Senses is a celebration of fine food and wine, talented artists, small businesses and fun; all sourced from Newcastle and surrounds. It’s sure to be a treat for all the senses.”Ali said This fun filled afternoon will help raise funds for The Leukaemia Foundation with World’s Greatest Shave activities and raffles.

Locals and visitors approaching the New Lambton shopping precinct from Russell Road by day or night will have noticed a new sign designed to better identify and brand the village.

The new sign was a project over two plus years carried out by the New Lambton Village Chamber of Commerce. It replaces an older sign at the same location. The major difference with this new sign is that it is illuminated with the use of solar power.

Chamber of Commerce President, Sarah Thrift told Lambton & New Lambton Local “The overall vision for the improved sign was to help define the community’s image and create a sense of place.

“We want both visitors and residents to have positive experiences in our Village and for our visitors to leave with an optimistic image of our community.”

Bowls day fundraiser for Leukemia Foundation When Jennifer Foster saw both her mum and dad pass away due to cancer in recent years she knew she wanted to do something in their honour by raising funds for research and cancer treatment support services.

“The staff at the Palliative Care Service at the Mater were just incredible in their care for mum. I can’t thank them enough. In the space of only three months last year 250 patients used their services.” Jennifer said.

Jennifer is holding a barefoot bowls day at Lambton Bowls, Sport & Recreation Club on Sunday 19th March in support of the Leukemia Foundation.

There’ll be plenty on offer during the day to entertain the whole family including free barefoot bowls, a huge raffle with a stack of great prizes as well as a Lions Club sausage sizzle and live entertainment from Overload.

“I’m hoping to raise at least $1000 from the day.

That would provide accomodation for two out of area families while their family member receives cancer treatment.” Jennifer told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

The day will kick off at 11am and conclude at 6pm when the highest bidder takes to Jennifer’s locks as

Cat found

Thank you for advertising my missing cat in your February issue.

Recently on a Sunday a lovely couple, Kylie and Allen phoned me to advise they discovered my cat. I went immediately and it was him.

They helped me get him out of a drain and since kept contact to see how both he and I were doing.

I took him to the vet, who was astounded that he survived, but gave him a check-up, put him on antibiotics and advised he had lost 2 kg in weight.

We are keeping him inside and feeding him up to regain his fluids and weight.

My sincere thanks to Lambton & New Lambton Local and Kylie and Allen from Bridges Rd New Lambton for your help in returning him to us.

Dogs unleashed I am writing in response to your article ‘Dog owners know all this’ in the February issue. I am wondering if some information could be published regarding the fact that all dogs MUST be on leads when on Lewis Oval near Durham Rd. I rang Newcastle Council Parks and Gardens and asked if Lewis Oval was an Off-leash area and the answer was no - they must be on a leash at all times. I also asked if notices to this effect could be replaced (they were removed many years ago, for what reason no one seems to know). They are going to look into replacing them.

I know of one dog (on leash) who was attacked by another dog (not on a leash) a couple of years ago on Lewis Oval. The upshot was that one of them had to be put down.

I used to take our dog for walks on the oval but I don’t anymore as I know I could not protect myself, let alone my dog, from an attack from another dog.

Strangers’ kindness commended I would like to commend the actions of two young men I came across whilst walking my dog around Lambton Park about 5:30 in the morning recently.

One of them asked if I would not walk along that particular path as they were with a cat that had just been attacked by a dog and were in the process of trying to comfort it. They said they had just finished work and had decided to go to the park to unwind.

They had seen a young woman struggling to control her dog which had attacked a cat. They helped her regain control and she removed her dog from the scene and they were trying to find a vet to get assistance for the cat.

It was probably 30 minutes by the

time I had retraced my steps home and collected various items to help the young men and get my car.

I found them at the memorial gates on Morehead Street, sitting either side of the tabby cat gently stroking her and talking to her.

One of them had placed their jacket over her. We managed to lift her with the use of a sheet into the car and both young men held and comforted her whilst I drove to the Animal Referral and Emergency Centre in Broadmeadow.

Here she was immediately given pain relief. Although the cat had a micro chip she hadn’t been registered. Sadly she had to be euthanased shortly afterwards.

Whilst it was very disappointing that the young woman didn’t have

the decency to return to help the young men, I have nothing but admiration for the two brothers (one of whom I think was called Reed). They stayed with the injured animal, even when they had no way of transporting it to a vet - they would not leave her and I’m sure they were of great comfort to her.

I thought by mentioning their actions it may highlight what very decent young people we have in our suburb. All too often the youth of today get a very bad rap.

I thought it might also bring some comfort to the owner of the cat, knowing that she was given the utmost care from two strangers that day.

Red Dog Diner now open at Alder Park

Alder Park Sports Club has welcomed new caterers to the kitchen recently with the arrival of Red Dog Diner.

According to owner Stephanie Etwell, the idea behind Red Dog Diner is to bring great quality meals to members and guests at great prices.

The extensive menu includes the traditional club favourites like steaks, burgers, schnitzels and roasts. There’s also pasta, lamb shanks and plenty more to entice the hungry diner. Kids are catered for with a special $8 menu. Weekly and daily specials are on offer to keep it interesting.

“It really was a no brainer for us to set up Red Dog Diner here. This is our first venture into catering for my husband Andrew and I” Stephanie told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

Heart health study seeks volunteer Type 2 diabetics

A team of researchers from the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital, are looking for volunteers to take part in a clinical trial which will examine use of curcumin and/or omega-3 fats for lowering cardiovascular disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes.

The team is looking to recruit 80 individuals aged between 40-75 years with type 2 diabetes to take part in this clinical trial. The study is six weeks long. Participants will need to take two capsules in the morning and evening with meals along with two 30 minute appointments either at the University of Newcastle or the John Hunter Hospital.

A wide range of measurements such as body composition, blood pressure and blood tests for lipids, glucose and inflammation.

At the end of the trial volunteers can receive a report on their body composition and blood reports, just like a free health check up while also contributing to advancement in scientific knowledge for a healthy community.

New gallery opens at New Lambton Rhonda Parcel has been working with and making art for most of her life. She and her partner Jeff have a shared passion for art. They set up the first gallery in Bourke some years ago. Rhonda painted and sold her own work to local people and tourists travelling through town.

The couple moved to Valentine in 2005 and were keen to open another gallery but chose to bide their time until the right premises in the right location presented itself. They believe they have struck that combination with Rhonda’s Originals at 33 Alma Rd (opposite The Locale) at New Lambton.

“It’s the sense of community and a village lifestyle that I like about this area” Rhonda told Lambton & New Lambton Local.

Rhonda’s Originals has a varied range of pieces from mainly local artists and artisans on display and for sale. These include paintings, sculptures, wood, glass, recycled metal creations and rustic furniture.

“We’ll be keeping the offering as fresh as possible.

Exhibitions will run for up to a month and then something new will put on show”.

That was then, this is now Doctor John James Hill

In my last two articles, I have mentioned the short-lived Australasia Coal Company (1874-1879), and how their colliery railway was repurposed to build the storm water drain in Broadmeadow, and Bridges Rd in New Lambton. Lambton had an even greater connection with this company, through Doctor John James Hill.

Dr Hill was Lambton’s first resident doctor. He came to the district in 1868 and soon after constructed a residence and surgery in Elder St. At various times he was the appointed medical officer for Lambton, New Lambton and Waratah collieries, and he was an honorary surgeon at the Newcastle Hospital.

But it was not just medical matters that occupied the doctor’s time, he was also a real estate developer, and coal mining investor. In 1874 he was one of the instigators of the Australasian Coal Company, whose mining lease was in the Winding Creek area near Cardiff.

He was a major shareholder and served as a founding director of the company. He also privately purchased 40 acres of land adjacent to the mine, to develop as a township with 340 residential allotments.

This side investment brought Dr Hill into conflict with the other company directors, and as the colliery spiralled into bankruptcy, a bitter war of words was ranged against Dr Hill, culminating in a

policy in October 1877 “that the Australasia Company will not employ any man who is residing at Hillsborough (Dr. Hill’s township.)”

Dr Hill was actively involved in many aspects of the local community. He served as an alderman on Lambton council for six years, and was three times elected Mayor. While still serving as Mayor in late 1882, after an illness that had confined him to his house for three weeks, Dr. Hill died on 19th December aged just 38. In 2017 we will continue to consolidate new school focus programs to meet our priorities for student learning and school improvement- Lambton Learning Ladder (L3) and Walkthroughs. They were created through staff learning teams, where teachers and school executive worked together using school data and current research to develop strategies and procedures to form these new school directions.

The L3 program has been implemented in years 7 and 8 as a structured timetable period per cycle, to build a strong foundation in problem solving, collaboration and attitudes to learning. Classes are taught through a team teaching model, with two teachers allocated to each class at the same time, and engaged in a program based on inquiry-based learning. The students’ progress from modelled to guided, then independent tasks, with flexible learning opportunities created through the use of the open learning space.

Walkthrough is a collegial classroom observation program with a focus on student learning, where two teachers observe a snapshot of a lesson and provide feedback. It has been developed to align with the Australian Professional Teaching Standards and to support each teacher’s Performance and Development Plan.

In addition, we will continue to consolidate focus programs in progress such as Quality Teaching Rounds, extended writing and senior study. We believe that these programs have made a significant impact on our students, as evidenced by the outstanding HSC results achieved in 2016.

Planning your travel photography

It may seem obvious, but photography should always be a key part of travel preparation.

Ensuring that you return with good photographs greatly enhances the travel experience. For example, we recently switched to what is known as an ‘action camera’ and expect to take our travel photos to the next level. We changed from traditional photography because fellow travellers told us that action cameras had dramatically improved their travel photos. And, although we are still in the novice stage, the results certainly look promising.

For a start, ‘action cameras’ have an ultra-wide angle lens, which gives a totally different perspective - with far more of surroundings in the frame. The cameras are tiny, which allows them to conveniently and inconspicuously fit in a small bag or even a pocket.

Most give out a Wifi signal which can be linked to a smartphone.

By watching the phone, you can view what the camera is seeing and then take the photo by pressing the phone screen. If you wish, the photo or video can then be uploaded immediately to social media. Many of the action cameras are waterproof to a certain depth for use while snorkelng and have adhesive mounts that allow them to be fitted to a head, chest, wrist or ankle strap.

This is the reason for the stunning photographs that have become synonymous with surfing, cycling and action sports over recent years. In our case, the camera is mainly attached to a more sedate handgrip that doubles as a tripod. Action cameras need regular charging, just like your phone. And, because they can take multiple photos at lightning speed and high quality video, we’ve learned that it’s also wise to purchase a 64 or 80 gigabyte micro SD card (or two). There is no clear evidence to suggest that people are becoming more intolerant of gluten, however much research is being undertaken in this space. One small, although high quality, study at Monash University did suggest gluten was capable of causing illness in people who did not have celiac disease but this is yet to be conclusively confirmed.

Gluten sensitivity can lead to similar symptoms of Coeliac disease such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, and bloating. However there is no associated damage to the small intestine.

The term ‘gluten-free’ is ubiquitous in modern society. Dietary gluten (or wheat) is often blamed for causing a variety of unpleasant symptoms, health problems, and weight gain. Today many people avoid gluten in the belief that it will improve their health or help them to lose weight. Health professionals have expressed concern that increasing numbers of people are self-diagnosing gluten allergies and intolerances.

The only way to know if you have Coeliac disease or a gluten sensitivity is to be tested by a health professional. It cannot be self-diagnosed based on symptoms. Coeliac Awareness Week is held annually between 13 and 20 March and aims to raise awareness of coeliac disease and its symptoms, and promote the message of the importance of getting tested. Each of these basic needs feeds into two elemental drives: * The drive to survival, and * The drive to safety.

When either the drive to survival or safety is violated as we grow from childhood to adulthood and encounter the world, we typically begin to adjust our behaviour in order to minimise the distress. We generally activate a number of avoidant behaviours when this happens.

Over time, these become programmed in or entrenched in unhelpful patterns of thinking and acting. While avoiding distressing people, places and events might seem to work for a while, this response ultimately becomes negative for the individual’s health and mental health and ‘steals’ away their capacities to act. Feline enteritis re-emerges

Reports of an outbreak in Western Sydney of a highly contagious cat virus called Feline Enteritis have been confirmed with DNA sequencing by specialist vets at the University of Sydney. Feline Enteritis, also called Feline Panleukopaenia, is caused by a type of parvovirus very like canine parvovirus.

Outbreaks have occurred in shelter kittens, first in Mildura and Melbourne in 2015, and now in Western Sydney. The good news is that DNA sequencing shows that the currently used feline enteritis vaccines are protective against this strain of the disease.

We have not seen cases of Feline Enteritis in our cat populations for around 40 years, and scientists believe

that the recent incidence stems from the fact that pet owners have become complacent about vaccinations, and many cats have not received their needles.

In unvaccinated cats feline enteritis causes fever, depression, vomiting, (often bloody) diarrhoea and dehydration, mostly in kittens less than 6 months of age, but older unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated cats may also be affected. Mortality (death) rates can be high. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells and so as well as causing gastrointestinal signs it causes development of very low white cell counts which can cripple the cat’s immune response, increasing susceptibility to other infections. If a pregnant female becomes infected, the virus can cross the placenta and her kittens may develop with neurological problems.

The Australian Veterinary Association recommends vaccination of kittens from 6-8 weeks of age and then 3-4 weekly until 16 weeks of age. From there regular booster vaccinations are required to maintain immunity. If you have questions about vaccinating your cat, please give us a ring at New Lambton Veterinary Clinic on 49528809.

Flu vaccination time

Despite the recent heatwave, Autumn is the time of year to start thinking about the pros and cons of influenza vaccination for you and your family.

Influenza is a viral infection, spread from person to person by respiratory droplets. People generally become unwell 1-3 days after infection with symptoms of fevers, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, productive cough and runny nose.

Major epidemics of type A and B influenza occur during the winter months and lead to an average of 13,500 hospitalisations and 3,000 deaths yearly in Australia and yearly vaccination is the single most important measure in preventing or reducing the severity of infection and preventing death.

Current vaccines normally contain 4 strands of virus (two A and two B strains), and confer protection (5085%) for about 12 months. Current recommended doses are: for 6/12 – 3 years 0.25ml x 2 doses 1 month apart, for 3-9 years 0.5ml x 2 doses 1 month apart and for all > 10 years 0.5ml x 1 dose.

Side effects are rare but may include localised pain, redness and swelling at injection site. muscle aches, drowsiness and/or tiredness and perhaps a low grade fever.

Under the National Immunisation Program the following groups of patients are eligible to receive free influenza vaccines; • Pregnant women.

• People aged 65 years and over.

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6/12 – 5 years and over 15 years.

• All people aged 6 months and over with medical conditions predisposing them to severe influenza.

Whilst annual influenza is recommended for all other persons older than 6 months of age who wish to reduce their chances of becoming ill with influenza.

Many businesses also provide immunization to their employees, with the expectation of increased productivity and reduced absenteeism.

The Court will only grant probate of a copy of a will if there is clear and sufficient evidence to show that the testator did not intentionally destroy his or her last will. That will almost invariably involve additional time, expense and searches to try to establish to the satisfaction of the court that was not the case.

When a will is made and executed, the executor appointed under the will and the close family members should be informed of where the original will is to be kept.

It is common practice when a will is drafted professionally that the original will is kept in safe keeping with the solicitor who prepared the will and a copy of the will is kept with the testator’s personal papers.

If the testator wishes to keep hold of the original will it is advisable not to keep the will at home where accidents can happen. In addition frequently personal papers can be lost or misplaced. It is therefore advisable to keep the original will in safe keeping at for example your bank or with your accountant.

Where the original will is being kept should be noted on the envelope containing the copy of the will which is then kept with the personal papers of the testator.

Failure: a new perspective We are now well and truly into the New Year and all those resolutions you made at the start of January maybe forgotten about and you may feel like you have failed.

Failure is such a negative word in our culture. We look at it as something that didn’t work out and somehow that is shameful.

I personally like to look at it differently. To me failure is, yes, something that didn’t work out but it is also something I can learn from and even take pride in.

If you look at most of the successful people in life they say that failure is something they embrace and is a key aspect to their success. In fact, Michael Jordan is famous for saying ‘I have failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.’

When you fail, and let’s face it everyone does, first congratulate yourself. You took a risk and it may not have paid off but you did something a lot of people are afraid to do and that is try. That is a success right there.

Next honestly look at what happened. You need

to identify what part you had to play in what went wrong. There is no use in blaming others. Then you need to learn from it and decide if you want to try again or move onto something else remembering all you have learnt from the experience.

If you learn from failure, then you will never have truly failed because you have learnt one of life’s most valuable lessons which is life is all about taking chances and learning from experiences. It is not always pleasant to fail but to lead a truly successful life you need to embrace all aspects of it and that includes failure.

What to expect The cost of a child’s schooling in Australia varies widely between areas, and depends on whether you opt for a private or public education. But even if you send your child to a government school, there are still plenty of expenses that you’ll need to be ready for – like uniforms, books, supplies and after-school activities.

Sciatica

Piriformis Syndrome After the sciatic nerve leaves the lower back it travels under a deep muscle in the buttocks called the Piriformis. If the Piriformis spasms it can compress the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica-type pain. When sciatica-type pain is caused by the impingement of the sciatic nerve by the Piriformis muscle this condition is called Piriformis syndrome and is not considered true sciatica.

Disc Degeneration When one or more of the lumbar intervertebral discs begins to degenerate due to aging or injury, proteins from inside the disc can be released and irritate the adjacent spinal nerves resulting in sciatic pain.

When dealing with sciatica rest should be the first treatment approach. However, if there is no reduction in pain with rest alone, acupuncture is an excellent alternative.

Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for sciatica because it is able to calm irritation of the sciatic nerve while relieving tension of the surrounding soft tissues that may be compressing the nerve.

Sciatica refers to lower back pain that develops from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and travels from the lower back and down the back of each leg. When compressed or irritated the sciatic nerve can cause pain that will radiate from its origin in the lumbar spine (lower back), through the buttocks, down the back of the leg and possibly into Ryan Samuels - Registered Acupuncturist & the feet and toes.

Chinese Herbalist The sensation of sciatica varies among patients, however it is usually felt in one leg and is described as tingling and/or burning or prickling. The intensity of pain can also vary with some patients experiencing debilitating pain while others experience irritating pain.
