Welcome to your new community newspaper Hamilton Local is your community newspaper delivered free each month to letterboxes in Hamilton, Hamilton North, Hamilton East and Hamilton South.

You can expect Hamilton Local in your letterbox towards the end of each month.

My name is Mark and I’m the publisher of Hamilton Local.

This is my third newspaper to date. I created Lambton Local in May 2014 and New Lambton Local in September 2015.

Hamilton Local will strive to be informative and entertaining, covering local news and

events relevant to the people of Hamilton and surrounding areas. There’ll be a bit of history, some local sport and plenty of stories that reflect the diversity and community spirit of your neighbourhood.

Hamilton Local won’t take itself too seriously; but it will be vocal and stand up for the best interests of the community when required. It will also unashamedly report the benefits that ripple through the community when you support local small businesses.

Splash of colour a focal point Samaritans Foundation has been working with the Hamilton South community and artist Shane Kennedy to add a splash of colour to the neighbourhood.

Following a successful pilot initiative of redesigning and painting a few letterboxes thanks to a ‘Make Your Place’ Grant from Newcastle City Council, Samaritans pushed for grant funding to complete the remaining letterboxes on Fowler Street.

Residents played a very active role in the whole process, from designing templates to participating in the painting of the letterboxes. It provided a fantastic opportunity for the community, both young and old to work together to achieve a common goal.

Blackbutt Junior Ranger Day

Blackbutt Reserve will come to life on Wednesday 12th April with a feast of school holiday activities including environmental art and craft activities, games, critter encounters and jumping castles at the popular Junior Ranger Fun Day. The theme for the day is Nature Adventure.

Long known as the Hunter’s most multicultural suburb, Hamilton has been at the forefront of the region’s most successful community events, eat street and entertainment options . While we can be proud of this heritage, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has its eye on the future.

What has become very clear over the past few years is the suburb’s changing role as one of Newcastle’s most cosmopolitan inner-city suburbs.

The obvious change has come with the truncation of the rail line at Hamilton in preparation for the new transport interchange at Wickham. While the suburb’s businesses and residents have been challenged by this change, for the most part, it has provided additional levels of traffic and movement and allowed the Chamber, in partnership with organisations such as Transport for NSW, Newcastle Now, City Council, Police and the NSW Government, to map out and activate additional ways to manage activity and demand.

Another important element of this change has been in urban growth with Hamilton increasingly becoming the suburb of choice as the next inner-city place to create convenient modern living options. This residential renaissance is complemented with the regeneration of the commercial areas of Hamilton.

A newly formed partnership with Renew Newcastle will see artists, cultural projects and community groups using some of the available commercial spaces in and around Beaumont Street.

While Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is a business membership-based organisation, we are very proud of our rich heritage and excited about our key role in promoting opportunities for people to live, work and play within the suburb.

Hamilton Chamber is a not-for-profit entity overseen by an elected management committee of volunteers selected from our membership base. Full membership is open to any business owner/operator or building owner within the Special Benefit Rate zones.

We have a modest staff and a group of active volunteer local business owners to manage our day to day activities.

Hamilton Chamber is a business advocacy group tasked with driving the Hamilton community forward and revitalising our great suburb. We use place-making projects, public events, partnerships with business and organisations, and strategic planning to bring life into our CBD. Humans of Hamilton Jono Everett

We met on a raining windy day in my gallery, having initially thought it would be the easiest place to meet. It ended up both of us arriving wet and exhausted.

After picking up coffees from my local – Fortunate Son – we were able to sit down, relax and have a chat.

Jono Everett is a dad, a maker of things, a husband, a friend. He is a human. Our first Human of Hamilton. He is a creative, like many Novocastrians, and he and his family live by their wits and talent.

It is no accident that Jono and his family live in Hamilton. They had visited Newcastle many times before they made the move seven years ago. Searching for a reason to relocate, Jono landed the contract to redevelop the Supernova Hands-on Science Centre of the Newcastle Museum during its move to Honeysuckle in 2010.

Hamilton became the suburb of choice for the family, offering flat streets for ease of walking and a main street full of shopping centre conveniences. Where else can you find grocery stores, fruit shops, banks, hairdressers, optometrists, Pharmacies, a Post Office, doctors and a myriad of speciality shops plus cafes and restaurants all within 10 minutes walking distance of your front door?

The Everetts found a beautiful brick house on a leafy street and made it into their home. As you read this, Jono will be either sitting with a coffee working in his upstairs office which overlooks Gregson Park or working on the tools in his studio, at The Soap Factory which he shares with other Newcastle artists and makers.

Jono is currently working on a historic project for Renew Newcastle, commissioned to design, curate and fabricate a portable exhibition that will ‘tell the story’ of Renew Newcastle’s past, present and future. An incredible initiative that has transformed the East End of Newcastle and created immeasurable opportunities for Newcastle creatives which has recently come to Hamilton, with the start of the Clocktower Studios.

Jono’s partner Sophia was part of one of Renew Newcastle’s first intakes, giving him an insider’s view of this unique story. You will be able to see the final exhibition at The Emporium later this year before it travels around the nation in a ‘road-case’ style contraption.

down, I asked Jono what he liked best about living here. After a moment of careful thinking he responded: ‘It’s the thick sense of community - it’s big enough that you can walk down Beaumont St and run into people you know one day and then be anonymous the next, and there will also be a friend of a friend who knows you.’

Of course, I couldn’t end without finding out Jono’s favourite coffee shop. He answered with a knowing smile - Suspension. I think I even nodded in agreement, I should have guessed, if it isn’t Goldbergs it’s Spennos. Ah, Novocastrians we’re so predictable.

Merewether-Hamilton RSL Sub Branch invites the local community to attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Gregson Park Hamilton on Tuesday 25th April.

The ceremony commences at 5:20 am when the march steps off from the corner of Tudor and Beaumont Streets and heads to the War Memorial at Tudor and Steel Streets corner of Gregson Park.

The choir from Hamilton Public School will participate in the service.

Hamilton’s history on show for all Hamilton’s history – long hidden in libraries, books and fading memories – is now on show to everyone who walks its streets.

You might have seen the attractive, blue and white plaques adorning buildings in Beaumont Street and beyond. There are 20 of them in total - just like the ones in London and New York.

Each plaque tells a story, giving a glimpse into the past of our suburb.

There is often a fascinating snippet of information that will stick in our minds.

Hidden Hamilton The Story of Beaumont Street

Beaumont Street wasn’t always the colourful ‘Eat Street’ it is today. The main street running through the rough mining settlements of Borehole, Pit Town and Happy Flat was actually Denison Street (once called Winship Street). You could tell it was the main street because it had near a dozen boisterous hotels.

Originally, Beaumont Street was a sandy, muddy track meandering from Glebe Hill towards the present location of the Hamilton Station.

People walked most places - from home to work in the mines or the few shops, on the deep rutted tracks.

It was a ‘two mile walk’ to Newcastle.

A few shops were starting to appear in Hamilton - Winn’s tiny general store on Cameron’s Hill, a butcher’s shop opposite what would become Gregson Park, and Webster’s general store (and Borehole’s first post office) on the corner of Denison and Webster Street.

By 1872 there were just five shopkeepers in Hamilton, including the Co-operative Store (where Wesley Uniting Church is now), and Donald’s

ironmonger on the Boulevard on Beaumont corner.

As the population grew, so did the demand for more local shopping.

Beaumont Street was named after Frank Beaumont.

He had arrived in Newcastle in 1853 to become Mine Manager for the Australian Agricultural Company.

By 1906 (see photograph on facing page) Beaumont Street was beginning to look like the main street of any Australian country town. The pavement had kerb and guttering, though the ruts in the road made by horse drawn buses and other vehicles are obvious.

The advent of the railway station in the late 1800s (see photograph below) had a huge effect on the development of Beaumont Street. Rail travel was popular and convenient; the new station became a magnet for commercial development. The Sydney Junction Hotel, the Hamilton Station Hotel, and later the Kent Hotel and The Northern Star Hotel, caught the wave and drew patrons away from the Denison Street hotels.

Over the decades to follow, most of the Denison Street hotels died, leaving only The Exchange Hotel and The Bennett Hotel surviving there.

Record crowd turns out for best

Record crowds and a huge program of activities and performances has made this year’s Carnivale the biggest and best annual event to date.

Supported by Greater Bank the event exceeded the expectations of organisers, attracting more than 25,000 people to the suburb on Sunday 12th March.

Hamilton Chamber President, Nathan Errington, said that perfect weather conditions underpinned a full day of programs and entertainment.

“We estimate that almost $500,000 was spent in the suburb at Carnivale - which is great news for Hamilton business. There were more than 50 market stalls that complemented Beaumont Street’s 100 or so retails shops and more than 20 cafes, restaurants and hotels,” Mr Errington said.

“The event is the successful blend of Hamilton businesses working with our community to showcase the rich and diverse flavours of our suburb. We had more than 20 cultures represented on the day through dance, music and food.

“We are very proud of Hamilton’s multicultural heritage and in 2017 used Carnivale to further promote the suburb’s modern retail, hospitality and lifestyle options as well as being the home to a critical part of Newcastle’s current transport infrastructure,” he said.

Recently we’ve had a spate of nurses and a doctor who work in Intensive Care Units of local hospitals along with their partners instruct us to prepare their Wills. In each case they’ve also opted to have Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship documents prepared.

These couples are young; in their 30s. One of them explained their job made them realise the potential for accidents and the additional pain and inconvenience that not having these documents in place causes families when they are already traumatised.

A properly drafted Will simplifies matters for your family. It appoints the person you want to act as your executor to manage your affairs and distribute your property in the way you would like. Knowing your family will be provided for if anything happens to you can also be a weight off your shoulders and provide peace of mind.

An Enduring Power of Attorney and an Enduring Guardianship come into effect while you are still alive and when a doctor certifies you are not currently capable of making decisions for yourself. Sometimes a loss of mental capacity can be temporary such as when you are unconscious or using heavy sedative medication. Sometimes mental capacity can be lost permanently such as from a serious irreversible brain injury or a brain degenerative disease.

An Enduring Power of Attorney provides the person you appoint with the right to deal with your bank accounts, real estate and other property.

An Enduring Guardianship allows the person you appoint to make decisions about personal things such as medical treatment you will accept and where you will live. It can also provide details of what medical treatments you would be willing to consent to.

It’s worth being prepared.

School backpacks: fashion vs function

When it comes to purchasing that new handbag or pair of shoes the appearance takes priority right?

Does the practical function of the item get a look in?

Probably not.

For many parents here lies the problem when purchasing a backpack. The child is looking for the trendy, fashionable backpack, you’re aware this probably isn’t great for their health but find yourself a little unsure as to what is best.

A backpack should support a growing and developing spine.

According to an international study, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children, to cause fatigue in 65.7%, and to cause back pain in 46.1%.

A backpack should be no heavier than 10% of the child’s body weight when packed. Look for broad padded adjustable shoulder straps, to ensure they don’t dig into the child’s neck and shoulders.

Discourage the bag being slung over one shoulder, use both straps. Ensure the backpack is no wider than the child’s chest and sturdy in construction.

Waist straps are so important for a growing spine, they are able to distribute up to 80% of the bags weight across the hips and pelvis, the strongest part of the spine. This will help move weight away from the more vulnerable neck and shoulders.

These tips should give you confidence when looking for your next backpack.

Perhaps the toughest consideration is fashion vs function and how much you will compromise on function for a growing spine.

Coughs and colds very common The recent cold snap may have you thinking about winter, and coughs and colds that often accompany the change in seasons.

Coughs and colds are very common. Each year, adults can develop between two and four colds and children between five and ten. With our increasingly busy lives, we are often seeking a treatment for coughs and colds and the first stop is usually the pharmacy.

Cough treatments will not cure a cough; but they may help relieve the cough symptoms. Treatment depends on the symptoms and the type of cough.

If you have a dry, non-productive cough, a treatment that sooths the throat and/or suppresses (stops) the cough may help.

If the cough is chesty and productive, a cough treatment that will help break up the mucus making it easier to cough may provide relief. A cough medicine that suppresses a cough is not suitable for a chesty cough.

Colds are caused by viruses. There are no medicines that can cure a cold. Some medicines such as cough suppressants, expectorants and mucolytics, antihistamines, pain relievers and decongestants may ease the symptoms of colds and flu.

Antibiotics do not work against viral infections and so are not useful for treating colds.

University study seeks volunteers Can diabetes be prevented without weight loss?

Could omega-3 fatty acids help to prevent type 2 diabetes even without weight loss? That’s what researchers at the University of Newcastle would like to find out.

The number of people in Australia developing type 2 diabetes is growing, despite the fact that up to 60% of cases are preventable.

One of the risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes is being overweight or obese – with 63% of Australians falling in this category, most people are at some risk of

developing the disease. However not everyone who is obese will develop type 2 diabetes, and this is what Ms Kylie Abbott’s PhD is investigating.

“Insulin is needed to turn the glucose in our blood into energy.

Insulin resistance occurs when our cells can’t respond properly to insulin, and is a precursor to developing type 2 diabetes” says Ms Abbott. “We know that one of the links between obesity and insulin resistance is inflammation in our fat cells. The omega-3 fatty acids have really powerful anti-inflammatory actions in the body, including in our fat cells.

Removing this inflammation could help the cell respond better to insulin, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes”.

This research builds on the team’s previous discovery, where overweight/obese Australians with a higher “Omega-3 Index” – a measure of omega-3 status – had

the lowest prevalence of type 2 diabetes. “Now we would like to find out whether improving someone’s Omega-3 Index improves their body’s response to insulin. This can be measured using a simple fasting blood test”.

Ms Abbott is currently looking for 80 non-diabetic, overweight or obese volunteers, to participate in a clinical trial. Volunteers will be asked to take two capsules each day for 12 weeks, which contain either fish or corn oil, and donate a small blood sample at the start and the end of the trial. You might be eligible to participate if you are aged between 18-70, with a BMI between 25-45kg/m2 and a waist circumference above 88cm (for females) or 102cm (for males), and you don’t normally eat a lot of oily fish (< 2 serves each week).
