SANT’ORONZO THE FEAST OF LECCE
I
t is one of the events of the summer in Salento, the patronal feast par excellence. Sant'Oronzo, in fact, is not only the feast of Lecce, but it is almost the feast of everyone, with the capital that transforms and becomes even more sparkling. This year, however, even the feast of Lecce has had to give in to the restrictions for the Covid-19: there will be no procession, there will be no illuminations. Definitely a dull party but that hasn't given up the sounds that characterize it. In fact, it will be the band to mark the rhythm of the next days throughout the city, from the center to the marinas, passing through the suburbs to make it a party, despite everything.

he Vermentino Li Cuti was born in the 80's from an experiment conducted with the scholar Giovanni De Rinaldis. This vine here, in the IonianGallipolitan arc, has found favorable soil and microclimate. The intuition came to Carlo Antonio Coppola from the memory of the vineyards of Châteauneufdu-Pape, in the lower Rhône area of France, which he visited in 1952, characterized by a very pebbly soil. The experts Antonio Calò and Angelo Costacurta praised the Vermentino Li Cuti in their volume "Dei Vitigni Italici". Try it as a fresh aperitif.

Il Rustico
Ingredienti: 3 rolls of pastry, tomato puree, 2 mozzarellas, extra virgin olive oil. For the Besciamella: 200ml of milk, 50 gr of flour, 50 gr of butter, salt, pepper, nutmeg. Let's make the béchamel first. Once melted the butter add the flour and stir (watch out for lumps!). Add the milk, salt, pepper, nutmeg and keep stirring until the mixture is thick. Add the diced mozzarella, stir and let it cool. Prepare the discs of puff pastry. Put the baking paper on a baking tray and place the first circles of puff pastry. In the middle of each disc put half a spoon of béchamel sauce and half a spoon of tomato sauce (after seasoning with oil and salt). Close well by covering with a smaller circle of puff pastry. Brush the upper part of the rustic with beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven at 200° for about 25 minutes.

he religious center of the feast of St. Oronzo is undoubtedly the Duomo. The flagship of the homonymous square, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the ambassador of the sacred baroque of Salento and Lecce in particular, the most eloquent symbol of southern Florence. One of the peculiarities of the structure is the double entrance facade, with what would seem to be the main one which is actually lateral. The splendour of this façade announces the beauty of the internal decorations, distributed from the floor to the ceiling. The twelve altars surround the two side aisles and the wooden ceiling dominates the central one. Among the numerous paintings there are some by Giovanni Andrea Coppola. The 12th century crypts are also worth seeing. With just one ticket you can visit several churches in the historical centre.
