Lamar University provides educational opportunities that prepare graduates to meet the needs of a constantly evolving, technology-driven world. In the Information Age, the university’s role has never been more vital. Founded in 1923 as a junior college, Lamar today is a comprehensive university offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1995, Lamar joined The Texas State University System, which now also includes Lamar State College-Port Arthur, Lamar State College-Orange, Lamar Institute of Technology, Sam Houston State University, Texas State UniversitySan Marcos, Sul Ross State University and Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College. More than 74,000 graduates have received diplomas from Lamar University, and thousands more have made Lamar part of their educational experience. Defining characteristics of Lamar are small class sizes, distinguished faculty and research opportunities. With an enrollment of more than 13,000, the university continues to achieve academic excellence within the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Fine Arts and Cummunication, and Graduate Studies. Alumni repeatedly credit their success to the personal attention that they received as students from tenured and tenure-track faculty, and that proud tradition continues today. More than 86 percent of the university’s fulltime faculty have doctoral degrees, allowing students to learn from accomplished professors. Students receive individualized attention and hands-on learning opportunities. Lamar offers courses of study in more than 100 undergraduate programs, 47 master’s degree programs and nine doctoral programs. Each college contributes to the growth and development of the region, not only through its direct educational mission, but also through programs athat provide special benefits to the residents of Southeast Texas.
