LAMAR CARDS SOFTBALL

LAMAR CARDS SOFTBALL Holly Bruder, a coach who has established a reputation for building fledgling softball programs, enters her second season at Lamar. Lamar, which had softball from 1983 to 1987, brought softball back last season, and Bruder made an immediate impact. The Lady Cardinals won their season-opener in walk-off fashion over UTSA and ended the regular season with three straight walk-off victories over Houston Baptist to clinch a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Among her other activities, Bruder coached the USA Athletes softball teams, where she has had the opportunity to travel to Germany, Aruba and Australia as an ambassador for the game. She is also an ASA and NSA certified umpire and was on the Central Region All-America Committee from 20032006.

Bruder led Lamar to a 24-35 overall record, and a 14-13 mark in the Southland Conference, as Lamar finished fifth. A tireless worker, Bruder has spent countless hours making Lamar’s field at Ford Park a showcase diamond. She had made numerous public appearances to promote Lamar softball and stresses the importance of community service to her players. Bruder came to Lamar from Morehead State, where she went 115-96, leading the Eagles to a second-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2008, the school’s best finish ever, and third-place finishes in 2009 and 2010. She set a school record with 34 wins in 2008 before breaking it with 35 victories in 2009. Prior to her arrival, Morehead State had losing records in eight consecutive seasons and 13 of its previous 14 seasons. Bruder was 145-105 in her six seasons at Denison, winning four North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season titles and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Tournament on three occasions. Bruder began her coaching career at Albion College in Michigan in 1999 and 2000 where she was an assistant coach. In her short time there, she helped transform a downtrodden program into a contender, guiding the team into the conference tournament for the first time in three decades. From there, she spent one season as assistant softball coach and head women’s tennis coach at Bluffton College in 2001, where her twin sister Heather is the current head softball coach. She helped Bluffton to the league’s best record and the top spot in the tournament.

HOLLY BRUDER HEAD COACH

After a stellar prep career at Rogers City (Mich.) High School, Bruder was a four-year letterwinner and standout softball and soccer player at Alma College. She helped Alma win three conference titles and advance to the Division III College World Series in 1999, where her squad took third place nationally. She was named Second-Team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1999.

JENNA RODRIGUEZ

ASSISTANT COACH

PITCHING COACH

2nd Season

2nd Season

Allison Honkofsky, who played for and coached with Lamar head coach Holly Bruder at Morehead State, enters her second season as Bruder’s top assistant at Lamar.

Jenna Rodriguez who had a stellar collegiate career at the University of Hawaii and Yavapai College, is in her second season as pitching coach at Lamar.

Honkofsky, who was Bruder’s first hire at Lamar, works with the infielders and coordinates Lamar’s recruiting efforts.

In her first season at Lamar, she helped a Lamar pitching staff record a school-record 24 wins, and left-hander Shannon Millman post a single-season school mark of 17 wins.

Honkofsky played two years for Morehead State (2007, 2008), appearing in 91 games. She hit .248 with three home runs as a senior, helping Morehead State to a 34-16 record, the best mark in school history. She capped her senior year by receiving the Eagle Award as the university’s best all-around athlete.

Rodriguez played two seasons for Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., helping lead the Roughriders to the NJCAA Division I national title in 2009. She was 25-5 as a pitcher that season, with six shutouts. Rodriguez also batted .489 en route to being named a first team junior college All-American after earning second team All-American honors as a freshman.

Prior to Morehead State, Honkofsky played one season at Rhode Island before transferring to North Florida Community College, where she earned second-team all-conference honors at shortstop. Bruder said hiring Honkofsky was an easy decision, citing her passion and excitement for softball.

She was named to the all-tournament team after leading Yavapai to the national crown. At Hawaii, Rodriguez was a first-team all-Western Athletic Conference and all-West Region performer. She was 4-1 as a pitcher in her two years at Hawaii, and hit .346. Her walk-off home run lifted Hawaii over Alabama in the 2010 Super Regionals, giving the Rainbow Wahine their first berth in the Women’s College World Series.

“She’s a tremendous recruiter,” Bruder said. “She’s also excellent at practices and game situations.” Honkofsky, a native of Hampstead, Md., holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Morehead State and an associate’s degree from North Florida Community College.

2014 Information Guide

The native of Pasadena, Calif., enjoys snowboarding, wakeboarding, shopping and cooking. Rodriguez graduated from Hawaii with a degree in communications.
