Team USA squanders win for gold

Members of team USA look on in shock after their disqualification.

BARCELONA, SPAIN (AP) Matt Grevers scratched his head, wondering what went wrong. Nathan Adrian and Ryan Lochte stared at the scoreboard, their jaws open in disbelief. Kevin Cordes stood on the deck with his hands on his head.

“That’s like a punch in the gut right there,” U.S. men’s head coach Bob Bowman said of his team's stunning ouster at the world championships in Barcelona, Spain. Moments earlier, all four swimmers were embracing each other, again celebrating that surest of gold medals in the pool — the men’s 4x100 medley relay. It’s a race the U.S. has never lost, except for disqualification. Since the race’s inception at the 1976 Montreal Games, the Americans’ only defeat at a worlds or Olympics came at the 2007 worlds in Melbourne, Australia, when Ian Crocker dove too soon for the butterfly leg in morning heats. This time, the disqualification came during Sunday’s final before a crowd of 10,000 screaming fans inside the sweaty Palau Sant Jordi. And after Adrian touched the wall first in the anchor leg by nearly 1.5 seconds — an eternity in swimming. Cordes, a 19-year-old competing at his first worlds, dove for his breaststroke leg 0.04 seconds before Grevers touched the wall to complete his backstroke leg. The rules allow a leeway of 0.03, so it was 0.01 over the limit — the smallest margin possible. “It’s as much my fault or more than Kevin’s,” Grevers said. “The guy coming in is usually the one responsible. I kind of slipped off my start and got a little more tired than I wanted to at the end. I probably had a slower rate than I was anticipating — obviously than he was anticipating,” Grevers added. “I got to learn to finish better and he’s probably got to learn to time a little better. I have a feeling Kevin’s going to be a little safe for the next couple years.” When “DQ” was placed next to United States on the scoreboard, France moved up to take the gold, while the silver went to Australia and Japan snatched the bronze. Afterward, Cordes was escorted past reporters without saying a word, while his teammates addressed the failure. Read More about this here

Twelve players suspended for PEDs

Nelson Cruz is one of 12 players accepting suspensions from Major League Baseball. UPDATED BY FOX NEWS AUG 5, 2013 1:55 PM ET

Twelve players have accepted 50-game suspensions for violating baseball’s drug policy, Ken Rosenthal reports, citing sources. An announcement is still expected for a potential suspension for Alex Rodriguez. Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Tigers shortstopJhonny Peralta, Philliesreliever Antonio Bastardo,Mets outfielder Jordany Valdespin, Padresshortstop Everth Cabrera, free-agent pitcher Jordan Norberto, Yankeescatcher Francisco Cervelli, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, Astros reliever Sergio Escalona, Padres reliever Fautino De Los Santos and Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinezhave accepted their punishments handed out by Major League Baseball based on findings in its investigation of the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic in Coral Gables, Fla. The clinic and its founder, Anthony Bosch, are alleged to have provided performanceenhancing drugs to major league players, as well as athletes in other sports. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun accepted a 65-game suspension on July 22 and will not play the remainder of this season. Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon, Blue Jays outfielderMelky Cabrera and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal — who were all named in Biogenesis documents — have each served a 50game suspension following a positive test. They will receive no additional punishment. Colon and Cabrera served their suspensions during the 2012 season; Grandal served his at the beginning of this season. Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez and Oriolesthird baseman Danny Valencia, who both were named in media reports on the investigation, were cleared of any involvement.

Major League Baseball suspended Alex Rodriguez on Monday for the rest of this season and all of the 2014 season for violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and the Basic Agreement. Rodriguez will appeal the decision and can play until the process is complete. He is scheduled to make his season debut for the Yankees tonight vs. the Chicago White Sox. The suspension is based on findings in its investigation of the Biogenesis clinic. The statement from Commissioner Bud Selig's office said: "Rodriguez's discipline under the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program is based on his use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including Testosterone and Human Growth Hormone, over the course of multiple years. "Rodriguez's discipline under the Basic Agreement is for attempting to cover-up his violations of the Program by engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the Office of the Commissioner's investigation. "The suspension, which will become effective on Thursday, August 8th, will cover 211 Championship Season games and any 2013 Postseason games in which Rodriguez otherwise would have been eligible to play." The New York Yankees and MLB reportedly had been talking with Rodriguez’s camp about a possible settlement, but those talks broke down over the weekend. Rodriguez, who will miss 211 games if the suspension is upheld, had told friends before the announcement that he will appeal and “fight to the end.” Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Michael Weiner today issued the following statement regarding the Biogenesis suspensions:

STORY BY

suspended for PED use “The accepted suspensions announced today are consistent with the punishments set forth in the Joint Drug Agreement, and were arrived at only after hours of intense negotiations between the bargaining parties, the players and their representatives. "For the player appealing, Alex Rodriguez, we agree with his decision to fight his suspension. We believe that the Commissioner has not acted appropriately under the Basic Agreement. "Mr. Rodriguez knows that the Union, consistent with its history, will defend his rights vigorously. The Union’s members have made it clear that they want a clean game. They support efforts to discipline players, and harshly, to help ensure an even playing field for all. The players support the Union’s efforts to uphold the JDA while at the same time guaranteeing that players receive the due process rights and confidentiality protections granted under the agreement. "Lastly, l want to close by stating our profound disappointment in the way individuals granted access to private and privileged information felt compelled to share that information publicly. The manner in which confidential information was so freely exchanged is not only a threat to the success and credibility of our jointly administered program; it calls into question the level of trust required to administer such a program. It is our view that when the bargaining parties hold their annual review of the program, we must revisit the JDA’s confidentiality provisions and consider implementing stricter rules for any breach by any individual involved in the process.” Twelve players have already accepted 50-game suspensions for violating baseball’s drug policy, Ken Rosenthal reports, citing sources. Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo, Mets outfielder Jordany Valdespin, Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, free-agent pitcher Jordan Norberto, Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli, Mariners catcher/designated hitter Jesus Montero, Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, Astros reliever Sergio Escalona, Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos and Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez have accepted their punishments handed out by Major League Baseball.

After busy summer, where do rebuilt Suns stand? By RANDY HIL Judging from the reactions from many of their fans, the Phoenix Suns have had a very effective summer. This perceived optimism has been generated by the widespread notion that the franchise has a more palpable direction. As we’ve noticed the past couple of years, the The Suns' offseason additions have included first-round picks direction of choice had been Alex Len and Archie Goodwin as well as general manager Ryan sideways -- with an unintended McDonough and coach Jeff Hornacek. (USA Today Sports) downward skewing. But the new direction we’ve witnessed is directly backward -- as in taking one step to the rear in an effort to make several hops forward. The almost giddy reaction to the Suns’ maneuvers over the past month or so was propelled by new general manager Ryan McDonough and those employees he’s added to his lineup of deep thinkers. So, while waving bye-bye to the notion of harboring decent veteran role players in a hasty reloading intended to chase the eighth playoff seed, Phoenix is unashamedly hording assets. And now that most of the finagling (we presume) has been executed, the Suns are left with two crazy-athletic ex-Kentucky guards (Eric Bledsoe and Archie Goodwin), a talented-butcurrently-hobbled young center (Alex Len), a couple of affordable ex-Indiana Pacers and a boatload of first-round draft picks. Center Marcin Gortat and his expiring contract -- according to management’s public summer stance -- will stay put for now, but he remains the franchise’s lead veteran asset during this rebuilding phase. With an expected bonanza waiting in the 2014 NBA Draft and the Suns having a chance to have three first-round picks during this derby, fans seem content to watch the young talent mature while the team closes in on another high lottery pick. WWE SUMMER SLAM Daniel Bryan … in a suit? Bah! Lunacy at its best, although the McMahon family certainly seems resigned to its latest plan of giving the No. 1 contender a “corporate makeover” just in case he defeats John Cena for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. History would dictate that this is a bad idea, but in any case, the submission master is set to undergo said grooming this Monday on Raw, while elsewhere, a veteran Superstar begins his climb back to the World Heavyweight Championship. Here are five things to look forward to on this week’s Raw.

Vince Young to work out for Packers PAUL IMIG Published: Monday, August 05, 2013, 9:21am GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Vince Young was spotted inside the Green Bay airport Sunday night and, according to reports, will be working out for the Packers on Monday. The Packers had a Monday mid-afternoon practice scheduled, but it was unexpectedly cancelled four hours beforehand. That should not interfere, however, with Young's workout with the team. been battling with Coleman throughout training camp to become Green Bay's second-string quarterback this season. Young, 30, last played in the NFL in 2011 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was released last season in training camp by the Buffalo Bills. A photo taken by Steven Wright and posted on his Twitter account @slappyb27 showed Young arriving in Green Bay around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. Green Bay has two backup quarterbacks behind starter Aaron Rodgers, but Young's presence may not necessarily be to challenge Graham Harrell or B.J. Coleman for the No. 2 job. After surrendering 579 yards against Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers in a divisional-round playoff loss last season, the Packers have practiced against the read-option and pistol offense throughout training camp. Young would certainly serve as a better type of quarterback to defend in that type of formation than Harrell or Coleman. Young, despite the issues that led him to being released by the Tennessee Titans in July 2011, has a 31-19 record as a starting quarterback in the NFL. So, Young's presence in Green Bay could be for more than just running a 49ers-style offense in practice. Harrell has been with the Packers since 2010 and was elevated to the active roster late in the 2011 season. In 2012, Harrell was Green Bay's No. 2 quarterback and, in his only meaningful snap of the season, fumbled and turned the ball over at the goal line after Rodgers had set up the offense for a likely touchdown. Coleman, a seventh-round pick in 2012, was on the Packers' practice squad as a rookie and has

Hall of Fame DT Donovan dead at 89 UPDATED AUG 4, 2013 10:38 PM ET

BALTIMORE (AP) Art Donovan, the lineman whose hilarious stories about his football career enabled him to maintain his popularity long after his election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died Sunday night. He was 89.

Donovan died at 7:20 p.m. at Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore, according to Kevin Byrne, senior vice president of public and community relations for the Baltimore Ravens. Donovan made a name for himself as a feisty defensive tackle for the Baltimore Colts, helping the team to world championships in 1958 and 1959. He also spent single seasons with the New York Yanks and Dallas Texans in a career that lasted from 1950 through 1961. "We lost a friend, one of the finest men and one of the greatest characters we were fortunate to meet in this community and in this business," Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said. "Baltimore is now without one of its best and someone who was a foundation for the tremendous popularity of football in our area. The world is not as bright tonight because we lost someone who could make us all smile.“ Read More Here

Burden on NCAA in Manziel report On Sunday, ESPN reported that the NCAA is investigating Johnny Manziel for allegedly signing autographs for a Florida autograph dealer. ESPN reported as follows: "Two sources tell "Outside the Lines" that the Texas A&Mquarterback agreed to sign memorabilia in exchange for a five-figure flat fee during his trip to Miami for the Discover BCS National Championship. Both sources said they witnessed the signing, though neither saw the actual exchange of money." The report cited three sources that claimed Manziel signed "photographs, footballs, mini football helmets and other items" at the request of a broker named Drew Tieman. Tieman allegedly approached Manziel on Jan. 6, when Manziel arrived in the Miami area to attend the BCS title game. It was after the meeting, the report said, when Manziel allegedly went to Tieman's residence and "signed hundreds of items in the main room of the apartment despite the fact that there were many people in the room." The important detail here is that none of ESPN's sources can prove that Manziel actually received payment for these autographs. Under NCAA rules it isn't enough for Manziel to have merely signed the autographs. The NCAA must prove that Manziel profited off the sale of his autographs. The relevant NCAA bylaw that governs this situation is found here: "12.5.2.1 Advertisements and Promotions After Becoming a Student-Athlete. After becoming a student-athlete, an individual shall not be eligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics if the individual: (a) Accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind." Now, using a student's likeness to profit is an NCAA violation — but so long as that student doesn't actually receive anything in return, there is no significant punishment that can be levied by the NCAA. So all Texas A&M would need to do is send a cease and desist to this autograph broker and assert that Manziel received no payment for his autographs. Manziel can argue that he signed the autographs as a gesture of good will — a point hammered home in a recent ESPN profile — and had no idea that his autographs would be sold. Provided there is no direct evidence to contradict Manziel's assertion that he wasn't paid — and if he was paid in cash, how could you prove it for sure? — then Manziel's eligibility would not be impacted.

Teen pleads guilty in Utah ref death

Utah referee Ricardo Portillo died after a weeklong coma, leaving behind three daughters.

A teenager charged with killing a Utah soccer referee over a call during a game pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of homicide by assault in a case that brought new attention to the issue of violence and sportsmanship in athletics. The plea deal was hashed out between the teen's attorneys and prosecutors as the judge planned to hear testimony to decide if the

17-year-old suspect will be tried in juvenile or adult court. Under the deal, prosecutors agreed to keep the case in juvenile court. Police say the teenager punched 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo once in the head on April 27 after the referee called a foul on him. Portillo died after a weeklong coma, leaving behind three daughters. ''I was frustrated at the ref and caused his death,'' the teenager said, speaking softly. His attorney described him as a ''good kid and excellent student who made one, terrible mistake.'' The teenager was charged with homicide by assault, a count issued when an attack unintentionally causes death. On Friday, the teen's attorney, Monte Sleight acknowledged there is probable cause the teen committed the crime in a private meeting with prosecutors and Juvenile Court Judge Kimberly Hornak, court records show. Prosecutors had wanted the boy tried as an adult due to seriousness of what happened and because he's set to turn 18 in less than three months. At a previous hearing in which the defense asked that the boy be allowed to go home to his family as the case progresses, prosecutors said the teen and his family are a flight risk. Patricia Cassell, a Salt Lake County deputy district attorney, pointed out that he and his father left the soccer field after the incident despite being told to stay - before they even knew Portillo was in critical condition. Now that he's facing possible prison time, the boy and his family are definitely a risk to flee, Cassell said. But Sleight says the teen comes from a hard-working, stable family who has lived in Utah for 20 years. He pointed out that the boy turned himself into police following the incident.

Veteran driver dies after track crash ABBOTTSTOWN, PA. (AP) Veteran Sprint Car driver Kramer Williamson died from injuries suffered during a qualifying race at Lincoln Speedway in central Pennsylvania, according to race organizers and the coroner's office.

Williamson, 63, of Palmyra, was pronounced dead at York Hospital at about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, the York County coroner's office said. He had suffered serious injuries in a crash that occurred Saturday night during the United Racing Company 358/360 Sprint Car Challenge. Investigators said Williamson's pink No. 73 car was on the fourth lap of a 10-lap qualifying round when it climbed onto another car and crashed into a retaining wall on the second turn, climbing the fence before returning to the track and flipping over several times. He was extricated from the car and flown to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. United Racing Company co-owner John Zimmerman said the team is mourning the loss of a popular and accomplished driver. ''URC lost the most popular driver and accomplished driver in our storied history,'' Zimmerman said in a statement. ''We are so saddened by the loss of an unforgettable member of our URC Family.'‘ Williamson was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2008 and had been racing for more than 40 years. He shared the 1971 rookie of the year title at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg. The last driver fatality at Lincoln was in 1975. In June, NASCAR driver Jason Leffler died from injuries suffered in a Sprint Car crash at Bridgeport Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J. About two weeks before Leffler's death, Josh Burton died of injuries sustained in a crash at Bloomington Speedway in Indiana. In late May, at a dirt track in Nevada, two drivers were killed in a race. And in March in California, two people were killed when a car careened off a dirt track and crashed on pit road.

Notre Dame unveils new unis FOX Sports Jim Weber, LostLettermen.com

After the disaster that was Notre Dame's 2012 Shamrock Series uniform, the Fighting Irish and Adidas have teamed up to release a second version to be worn on Oct. 5 vs. Arizona State that, to our amazement, isn't a complete abomination. [ PHOTOS: College football's hottest cheerleaders gallery] Adidas and Notre Dame went with a more conservative look this time around with a shimmery gold background, golden chrome shamrock and green facemask for the helmet. The uniforms are all-white with gold numbers and a gold shamrock on the shoulders, making both really pop on the white. The jerseys and pants are very sharp. Our only complaint is the chrome shamrock on the helmet that makes it look like Notre Dame's logo is a shamrock-shaped mirror. But compared to last year's hideous alternate uniforms, we aren't

Tiger's major problems Tiger Woods won his fifth tournament of the year over the weekend, a sevenshot victory over second-place finishers Keegan Bradley and Henrik Stenson at the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio. Naturally, Woods’ 15-under performance, the highlight of which came in a second-round 61, has some proclaiming that Tiger has returned to playing like his old self.

But all of the Secretariat-margin wins in the world won’t mean anything until Tiger wins another major, and this weekend's PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., will be Woods' last chance of the season to get that first post-meltdown major he so badly needs to officially be “back.” Woods shot even par in the final round of the season-opening Farmers Insurance Open to coast to a four-stroke victory. He then had another stress-free Sunday at the Cadillac Championship in March, posting a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish at 19-under for the tournament — which, by the way, earned him $1.5 million. His Monday finish at Bay Hill came with little fanfare, as did his win at the Players' Championship, with most of the heavy lifting coming on the tournament's first two days — a double-bogey on 14 being the only thing keeping the back nine of the final round interesting. And now there’s this: a throwback win at Bridgestone for Woods, who has finished in the top 10 in seven of the 11 tournaments he entered this season. But, that’s also kind of the problem. Of those seven top-10s, five were his wins, but the two non-wins came at the most inopportune times — a tie for fourth at the Masters and a tie for sixth at the Open Championship last month. “Dropgate” was Woods’ downfall at Augusta, but there was no excuse for fizzling at the Open, and there was even less of an excuse for that tie for 32nd following a miserable weekend at the U.S. Open. If Tiger can win the PGA Championship, his collapses at the previous three majors will be forgiven. But if he can’t get the job done, his five wins this year, and three last year, will soon be forgotten, and he’ll continue to just be another good pro who can’t win the big one — a strange description, to be sure, for a guy with 14 major championships to his name. Now, for some links: • A high school football coach was suspended for slapping a mildly offensive mantra on the locker room wall.

Race heats up for Mexico star Moreno

Espanyol defender Hector Moreno has been linked with Rubin Kazan, Swansea and Cardiff.

Manchester United have rejected a near-£30million bid from Chelsea for Wayne Rooney. Arsene Wenger last night admitted to Arsenal fans they will have to play their massive Champions League qualifier this month without any new signings. Brendan Rodgers has accused Arsenal of lacking class over their pursuit of Luis Suarez. West Brom want to throw a Premier League lifeline to Jermain Defoe. Jose Mourinho has revealed he was close to accepting the England job in 2007. Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is ready to turn to QPR's Loic Remy after failing to land either of his two major striker targets.

LeBron is mulling union bid

LeBron James, the game’s best and most popular player, is mulling a bid for the union’s presidency. “It’s something he has talked about with a small group of people,” a source with close ties to James told FOXSports.com on Wednesday. “He was very vocal at the meeting during the All-Star Weekend about the need for the union to dramatically change. There is a new executive director coming in and new commissioner. He recognizes that this is the time for the union to change.” Derek Fisher’s term as president expired this summer. It’s unlikely that Fisher, who recently signed a new contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, would retain the presidency since he is facing a lawsuit from the union’s former executive director, Billy Hunter, and because Fisher is at the end of his career. Jerry Stackhouse, an 18-year veteran and the union's first vice president, has been the point man for union activities so far this offseason. The union could elect its new president as early as late August when it holds its summer meetings in Las Vegas.

Little slugger has a big-league heart UPDATED AUG 5, 2013 7:06 AM ET FOX SPORT

It's every player's worst nightmare. You take a big cut and the bat leaves your hands. Its destination now literally out of your hands, you just hope it avoids a fan. Especially a little one. Kyle Seager lived that nightmare. And the little boy hit with the bat turned it into a story one could only dream of. Shortly after last month's All-Star Game, Seager'sMariners were in Houston taking on the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Seager entered the game riding a 15game hitting streak, and was without a hit in the game when he took a swing. The bat left his hands and landed on a boy named Lyle Raymond. Luckily, Lyle was not hurt in the incident. But he likely brought tears to Seager's eyes nonetheless with what he did next. After the incident, Lyle gave the bat back to Seager, foregoing his option to keep it as a souvenir. Seager, who went 0 for 4 in the game to see his streak end, gave Lyle a thumbs up in the game, and that was that. Until something came in the mail for Seager. Kyle's wife Julie shared the letter on Twitter: Dear Mr. Seager, My name is Lyle Raymond. Your bat landed on me. I am OK. Thanks for giving me the thumbs up when you were on first base. I like the Astros but will cheer you on too. I gave back your bat because you had a big hitting streak with that bat. I hope you have more with that bat. Your fan, Lyle After Julie posted the letter on Twitter, one reply said Lyle should be getting some "Seager swag." Julie's reply: "He'll be getting some, no worries."
